युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
श्रुतं दानफलं तात यत्त्वया परिकीर्तितम् ।
अन्नं तु ते विशेषेण प्रशस्तमिह भारत ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
śrutaṁ dānaphalaṁ tāta yattvayā parikīrtitam ,
annaṁ tu te viśeṣeṇa praśastamiha bhārata.

1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca tāta bhārata,
tvayā yat dānaphalam parikīrtitam (tat) śrutam.
tu te annam iha viśeṣeṇa praśastam.
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O father, I have heard the reward of donation which you have declared. But for you, O descendant of Bharata, the donation of food is especially praised here."
पानीयदानं परमं कथं चेह महाफलम् ।
इत्येतच्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि विस्तरेण पितामह ॥२॥
2. pānīyadānaṁ paramaṁ kathaṁ ceha mahāphalam ,
ityetacchrotumicchāmi vistareṇa pitāmaha.
2. pānīyadānam paramam katham ca iha mahāphalam
iti etat śrotum icchāmi vistareṇa pitāmaha

pānīyadānam katham paramam ca iha mahāphalam (asti).

2. "How is the donation of water supreme, and how does it yield great reward in this world? I wish to hear this in detail, O grandfather."
भीष्म उवाच ।
हन्त ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथावद्भरतर्षभ ।
गदतस्तन्ममाद्येह शृणु सत्यपराक्रम ।
पानीयदानात्प्रभृति सर्वं वक्ष्यामि तेऽनघ ॥३॥
3. bhīṣma uvāca ,
hanta te vartayiṣyāmi yathāvadbharatarṣabha ,
gadatastanmamādyeha śṛṇu satyaparākrama ,
pānīyadānātprabhṛti sarvaṁ vakṣyāmi te'nagha.
3. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca hanta te vartayiṣyāmi
yathāvat bharatarṣabha gadataḥ tat mama
adya iha śṛṇu satyaparākrama pānīyadānāt
prabhṛti sarvam vakṣyāmi te anagha
3. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca hanta bharatarṣabha te yathāvat vartayiṣyāmi.
satyaparākrama,
adya iha tat mama gadataḥ śṛṇu.
anagha,
te pānīyadānāt prabhṛti sarvam vakṣyāmi.
3. Bhīṣma said: "Well then, O best among Bhāratas, I shall explain it to you accurately. O (one of) true valor, listen to me as I speak of that here today. O sinless one, I will tell you everything, beginning with the donation of water."
यदन्नं यच्च पानीयं संप्रदायाश्नुते नरः ।
न तस्मात्परमं दानं किंचिदस्तीति मे मतिः ॥४॥
4. yadannaṁ yacca pānīyaṁ saṁpradāyāśnute naraḥ ,
na tasmātparamaṁ dānaṁ kiṁcidastīti me matiḥ.
4. yat annam yat ca pānīyam sampradāya aśnute naraḥ
| na tasmāt paramam dānam kiṃcit asti iti me matiḥ
4. naraḥ yat annam ca yat pānīyam sampradāya aśnute
tasmāt paramam kiṃcit dānam na asti iti me matiḥ
4. Whatever food and drink a person gives away, no gift superior to that exists; such is my conviction.
अन्नात्प्राणभृतस्तात प्रवर्तन्ते हि सर्वशः ।
तस्मादन्नं परं लोके सर्वदानेषु कथ्यते ॥५॥
5. annātprāṇabhṛtastāta pravartante hi sarvaśaḥ ,
tasmādannaṁ paraṁ loke sarvadāneṣu kathyate.
5. annāt prāṇabhṛtaḥ tāta pravartante hi sarvaśaḥ
| tasmāt annam param loke sarvadāneṣu kathyate
5. tāta,
annāt hi sarvaśaḥ prāṇabhṛtaḥ pravartante tasmāt loke sarvadāneṣu annam param kathyate
5. O dear one, indeed all living beings thrive entirely by food. Therefore, food is declared supreme in the world among all gifts.
अन्नाद्बलं च तेजश्च प्राणिनां वर्धते सदा ।
अन्नदानमतस्तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठमाह प्रजापतिः ॥६॥
6. annādbalaṁ ca tejaśca prāṇināṁ vardhate sadā ,
annadānamatastasmācchreṣṭhamāha prajāpatiḥ.
6. annāt balam ca tejaḥ ca prāṇinām vardhate sadā
| annadānam ataḥ tasmāt śreṣṭham āha prajāpatiḥ
6. annāt prāṇinām balam ca tejaḥ ca sadā vardhate
ataḥ tasmāt prajāpatiḥ annadānam śreṣṭham āha
6. From food, the strength and vigor of living beings always increase. Therefore, Prajapati declares the giving of food (annadāna) to be the best (gift).
सावित्र्या ह्यपि कौन्तेय श्रुतं ते वचनं शुभम् ।
यतश्चैतद्यथा चैतद्देवसत्रे महामते ॥७॥
7. sāvitryā hyapi kaunteya śrutaṁ te vacanaṁ śubham ,
yataścaitadyathā caitaddevasatre mahāmate.
7. sāvitryā hi api kaunteya śrutam te vacanam śubham
| yataḥ ca etat yathā ca etat deva-satre mahā-mate
7. kaunteya mahā-mate hi api sāvitryā te śubham vacanam
śrutam yataḥ ca etat yathā ca etat deva-satre
7. O son of Kunti (Arjuna), O greatly intelligent one, you have indeed heard that auspicious teaching from Savitri, concerning its origin and how it was declared in a divine (Vedic ritual).
अन्ने दत्ते नरेणेह प्राणा दत्ता भवन्त्युत ।
प्राणदानाद्धि परमं न दानमिह विद्यते ॥८॥
8. anne datte nareṇeha prāṇā dattā bhavantyuta ,
prāṇadānāddhi paramaṁ na dānamiha vidyate.
8. anne datte nareṇa iha prāṇāḥ dattāḥ bhavanti
uta | prāṇadānāt hi paramam na dānam iha vidyate
8. anne datte nareṇa iha prāṇāḥ dattāḥ uta bhavanti
hi prāṇadānāt paramam dānam iha na vidyate
8. Giving food to a person in this world is indeed giving life. For, truly, no gift here is greater than the gift of life (prāṇa).
श्रुतं हि ते महाबाहो लोमशस्यापि तद्वचः ।
प्राणान्दत्त्वा कपोताय यत्प्राप्तं शिबिना पुरा ॥९॥
9. śrutaṁ hi te mahābāho lomaśasyāpi tadvacaḥ ,
prāṇāndattvā kapotāya yatprāptaṁ śibinā purā.
9. śrutam hi te mahābāho lomaśasya api tat vacaḥ |
prāṇān dattvā kapotāya yat prāptam śibinā purā
9. mahābāho,
lomaśasya api tat vacaḥ te hi śrutam purā śibinā kapotāya prāṇān dattvā yat prāptam
9. O mighty-armed one, you have surely heard that very account from Lomasa: what Śibi attained long ago by giving his own vital breaths (prāṇa) for a pigeon.
तां गतिं लभते दत्त्वा द्विजस्यान्नं विशां पते ।
गतिं विशिष्टां गच्छन्ति प्राणदा इति नः श्रुतम् ॥१०॥
10. tāṁ gatiṁ labhate dattvā dvijasyānnaṁ viśāṁ pate ,
gatiṁ viśiṣṭāṁ gacchanti prāṇadā iti naḥ śrutam.
10. tām gatim labhate dattvā dvijasya annam viśām pate
| gatim viśiṣṭām gacchanti prāṇadāḥ iti naḥ śrutam
10. viśām pate,
dvijasya annam dattvā tām gatim labhate iti naḥ śrutam prāṇadāḥ viśiṣṭām gatim gacchanti
10. O lord of the people, by giving food to a twice-born (dvija), one attains that destination. Indeed, it has been heard by us that those who give life (prāṇa) achieve a distinguished destination.
अन्नं चापि प्रभवति पानीयात्कुरुसत्तम ।
नीरजातेन हि विना न किंचित्संप्रवर्तते ॥११॥
11. annaṁ cāpi prabhavati pānīyātkurusattama ,
nīrajātena hi vinā na kiṁcitsaṁpravartate.
11. annam ca api prabhavati pānīyāt kurusattama
| nīrajātena hi vinā na kiñcit sampravartate
11. kurusattama,
annam ca api pānīyāt prabhavati hi nīrajātena vinā kiñcit na sampravartate
11. And food also originates from water, O best of the Kurus. For truly, without what is produced from water, nothing whatsoever can flourish.
नीरजातश्च भगवान्सोमो ग्रहगणेश्वरः ।
अमृतं च सुधा चैव स्वाहा चैव वषट्तथा ॥१२॥
12. nīrajātaśca bhagavānsomo grahagaṇeśvaraḥ ,
amṛtaṁ ca sudhā caiva svāhā caiva vaṣaṭtathā.
12. nīrajātaḥ ca bhagavān somaḥ grahagaṇeśvaraḥ
amṛtam ca sudhā ca eva svāhā ca eva vaṣaṭ tathā
12. bhagavān nīrajātaḥ grahagaṇeśvaraḥ somaḥ ca
amṛtam ca sudhā eva ca svāhā eva ca tathā vaṣaṭ
12. The illustrious Soma, born from water, is the lord of the planetary multitude. He is also ambrosia, nectar, Svāhā, and similarly Vaṣaṭ.
अन्नौषध्यो महाराज वीरुधश्च जलोद्भवाः ।
यतः प्राणभृतां प्राणाः संभवन्ति विशां पते ॥१३॥
13. annauṣadhyo mahārāja vīrudhaśca jalodbhavāḥ ,
yataḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ prāṇāḥ saṁbhavanti viśāṁ pate.
13. annauṣadhayaḥ mahārāja vīrudhaḥ ca jalodbhavāḥ
yataḥ prāṇabhṛtām prāṇāḥ saṃbhavanti viśām pate
13. mahārāja viśām pate yataḥ annauṣadhayaḥ ca
jalodbhavāḥ vīrudhaḥ prāṇabhṛtām prāṇāḥ saṃbhavanti
13. O great king (mahārāja), O lord of the people (viśāmpate), from food, medicinal herbs, and water-born plants, the vital energies (prāṇa) of living beings originate.
देवानाममृतं चान्नं नागानां च सुधा तथा ।
पितॄणां च स्वधा प्रोक्ता पशूनां चापि वीरुधः ॥१४॥
14. devānāmamṛtaṁ cānnaṁ nāgānāṁ ca sudhā tathā ,
pitṝṇāṁ ca svadhā proktā paśūnāṁ cāpi vīrudhaḥ.
14. devānām amṛtam ca annam nāgānām ca sudhā tathā
pitṝṇām ca svadhā proktā paśūnām ca api vīrudhaḥ
14. devānām amṛtam ca annam ca nāgānām sudhā tathā
pitṝṇām ca svadhā proktā paśūnām ca api vīrudhaḥ
14. Ambrosia and food are for the gods, and similarly nectar for the Nāgas. Svadhā is declared to be for the ancestors, and plants are also for animals.
अन्नमेव मनुष्याणां प्राणानाहुर्मनीषिणः ।
तच्च सर्वं नरव्याघ्र पानीयात्संप्रवर्तते ॥१५॥
15. annameva manuṣyāṇāṁ prāṇānāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ ,
tacca sarvaṁ naravyāghra pānīyātsaṁpravartate.
15. annam eva manuṣyāṇām prāṇān āhuḥ manīṣiṇaḥ tat
ca sarvam naravyāghra pānīyāt sampravartate
15. manīṣiṇaḥ manuṣyāṇām annam eva prāṇān āhuḥ
naravyāghra tat sarvam ca pānīyāt sampravartate
15. Indeed, the wise declare food alone to be the vital energies (prāṇa) of humans. And all of that (food), O tiger among men, originates from water.
तस्मात्पानीयदानाद्वै न परं विद्यते क्वचित् ।
तच्च दद्यान्नरो नित्यं य इच्छेद्भूतिमात्मनः ॥१६॥
16. tasmātpānīyadānādvai na paraṁ vidyate kvacit ,
tacca dadyānnaro nityaṁ ya icchedbhūtimātmanaḥ.
16. tasmāt pānīyadānāt vai na param vidyate kvacit tat
ca dadyāt naraḥ nityam yaḥ icchet bhūtim ātmanaḥ
16. yaḥ ātmanaḥ bhūtim icchet naraḥ tat ca nityam dadyāt
tasmāt pānīyadānāt vai kvacit param na vidyate
16. Therefore, truly, there is no greater act anywhere than the giving (dāna) of water. And a person who desires prosperity for their own self (ātman) should always offer that (water).
धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं जलदानं विशां पते ।
शत्रूंश्चाप्यधि कौन्तेय सदा तिष्ठति तोयदः ॥१७॥
17. dhanyaṁ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṁ jaladānaṁ viśāṁ pate ,
śatrūṁścāpyadhi kaunteya sadā tiṣṭhati toyadaḥ.
17. dhanyam yaśasyam āyuṣyam jala-dānam viśām pate |
śatrūn ca api adhi kaunteya sadā tiṣṭhati toyadaḥ
17. viśām pate jala-dānam dhanyam yaśasyam āyuṣyam ca
kaunteya toyadaḥ sadā śatrūn api adhi tiṣṭhati
17. O lord of the people, the giving (dāna) of water is meritorious, brings fame, and prolongs life. And O son of Kuntī, a water-giver (toyada) always remains victorious over enemies.
सर्वकामानवाप्नोति कीर्तिं चैवेह शाश्वतीम् ।
प्रेत्य चानन्त्यमाप्नोति पापेभ्यश्च प्रमुच्यते ॥१८॥
18. sarvakāmānavāpnoti kīrtiṁ caiveha śāśvatīm ,
pretya cānantyamāpnoti pāpebhyaśca pramucyate.
18. sarva-kāmān avāpnoti kīrtim ca eva iha śāśvatīm |
pretya ca ānantyam avāpnoti pāpebhyah ca pra-mucyate
18. iha sarva-kāmān śāśvatīm kīrtim ca eva avāpnoti ca
pretya ānantyam avāpnoti pāpebhyah ca pra-mucyate
18. He obtains all desires and eternal fame in this world. Moreover, after death, he attains endless (bliss) and is completely freed from sins.
तोयदो मनुजव्याघ्र स्वर्गं गत्वा महाद्युते ।
अक्षयान्समवाप्नोति लोकानित्यब्रवीन्मनुः ॥१९॥
19. toyado manujavyāghra svargaṁ gatvā mahādyute ,
akṣayānsamavāpnoti lokānityabravīnmanuḥ.
19. toyadaḥ manuja-vyāghra svargam gatvā mahā-dyute
| akṣayān sam-avāpnoti lokān iti abravīt manuḥ
19. manuja-vyāghra mahā-dyute toyadaḥ svargam gatvā
akṣayān lokān sam-avāpnoti iti manuḥ abravīt
19. O tiger among men (manujavyāghra), O highly glorious one (mahādyute), the water-giver (toyadaḥ), after reaching heaven, attains imperishable worlds (lokān). Thus spoke Manu.
