ह्रदिनीं वप्रसंपन्नां महानूपां महावनाम् ॥१॥

1. Vaishampayana said: They, having reached the Ganga, which was auspicious, fitting for the virtuous (puṇyajana), a river with deep pools, abundant with high banks, possessing vast wetlands, and great forests.
भूषणान्युत्तरीयाणि वेष्टनान्यवमुच्य च ।
ततः पितॄणां पौत्राणां भ्रातॄणां स्वजनस्य च ॥२॥
2. bhūṣaṇānyuttarīyāṇi veṣṭanānyavamucya ca ,
tataḥ pitṝṇāṁ pautrāṇāṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ svajanasya ca.

पुत्राणामार्यकाणां च पतीनां च कुरुस्त्रियः ।
उदकं चक्रिरे सर्वा रुदन्त्यो भृशदुःखिताः ।
सुहृदां चापि धर्मज्ञाः प्रचक्रुः सलिलक्रियाः ॥३॥
3. putrāṇāmāryakāṇāṁ ca patīnāṁ ca kurustriyaḥ ,
udakaṁ cakrire sarvā rudantyo bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ ,
suhṛdāṁ cāpi dharmajñāḥ pracakruḥ salilakriyāḥ.
3. putrāṇām āryakāṇām ca patīnām ca
kurustriyaḥ udakam cakrire sarvāḥ
rudantyaḥ bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ suhṛdām ca api
dharmajñāḥ pracakruḥ salilakriyāḥ

kurustriyaḥ putrāṇām āryakāṇām ca patīnām
ca udakam cakrire; ca api dharmajñāḥ
suhṛdām salilakriyāḥ pracakruḥ
3. And for the sons, and the revered elders, and the husbands, all the Kuru women, weeping and greatly distressed, performed the water rites. Also, those who understood natural law (dharma) performed water rites for their friends.
उदके क्रियमाणे तु वीराणां वीरपत्निभिः ।
सूपतीर्थाभवद्गङ्गा भूयो विप्रससार च ॥४॥
4. udake kriyamāṇe tu vīrāṇāṁ vīrapatnibhiḥ ,
sūpatīrthābhavadgaṅgā bhūyo viprasasāra ca.

4. As water offerings were being made by the wives of the heroes, the Gaṅgā became a sacred bathing place and flowed widely again.
तन्महोदधिसंकाशं निरानन्दमनुत्सवम् ।
वीरपत्नीभिराकीर्णं गङ्गातीरमशोभत ॥५॥
5. tanmahodadhisaṁkāśaṁ nirānandamanutsavam ,
vīrapatnībhirākīrṇaṁ gaṅgātīramaśobhata.
5. tat mahodadhisamkāśam nirānandam anutsavam
vīrapatnibhiḥ ākīrṇam gaṅgātīram aśobhata
5. tat vīrapatnibhiḥ ākīrṇam mahodadhisamkāśam

5. That bank of the Gaṅgā, crowded with the wives of heroes, appeared like the great ocean - devoid of joy and festivity.
ततः कुन्ती महाराज सहसा शोककर्शिता ।
रुदती मन्दया वाचा पुत्रान्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. tataḥ kuntī mahārāja sahasā śokakarśitā ,
rudatī mandayā vācā putrānvacanamabravīt.

6. Then, O great king, Kuntī, suddenly emaciated by grief, weeping with a subdued voice, spoke these words to her sons.
यः स शूरो महेष्वासो रथयूथपयूथपः ।
अर्जुनेन हतः संख्ये वीरलक्षणलक्षितः ॥७॥
7. yaḥ sa śūro maheṣvāso rathayūthapayūthapaḥ ,
arjunena hataḥ saṁkhye vīralakṣaṇalakṣitaḥ.

arjunena hataḥ saṃkhye vīralakṣaṇalakṣitaḥ
7. yaḥ sa śūraḥ maheṣvāsaḥ rathayūthapayūthapaḥ
vīralakṣaṇalakṣitaḥ arjunena saṃkhye hataḥ
7. He who was that hero, the great archer, the leader among the chiefs of charioteers, and adorned with the marks of a warrior (vīralakṣaṇa), was slain by Arjuna in battle.
यं सूतपुत्रं मन्यध्वं राधेयमिति पाण्डवाः ।
यो व्यराजच्चमूमध्ये दिवाकर इव प्रभुः ॥८॥
8. yaṁ sūtaputraṁ manyadhvaṁ rādheyamiti pāṇḍavāḥ ,
yo vyarājaccamūmadhye divākara iva prabhuḥ.
8. yaṃ sūtaputraṃ manyadhvaṃ rādheyam iti pāṇḍavāḥ
yaḥ vyarājat camūmadhye divākaraḥ iva prabhuḥ
8. pāṇḍavāḥ yaṃ sūtaputraṃ rādheyam iti manyadhvaṃ
yaḥ prabhuḥ camūmadhye divākaraḥ iva vyarājat
8. O Pāṇḍavas, he whom you consider to be the son of a charioteer, the son of Rādhā, that mighty one shone in the midst of the army like the sun.
प्रत्ययुध्यत यः सर्वान्पुरा वः सपदानुगान् ।
दुर्योधनबलं सर्वं यः प्रकर्षन्व्यरोचत ॥९॥
9. pratyayudhyata yaḥ sarvānpurā vaḥ sapadānugān ,
duryodhanabalaṁ sarvaṁ yaḥ prakarṣanvyarocata.
9. prati ayudhyata yaḥ sarvān purā vaḥ sapadānugān
duryodhanabalaṃ sarvaṃ yaḥ prakarṣan vyarocata
9. yaḥ purā vaḥ sapadānugān sarvān prati ayudhyata
yaḥ duryodhanabalaṃ sarvaṃ prakarṣan vyarocata
9. He who formerly fought against all of you and your followers, and who, leading the entire army of Duryodhana forward, shone resplendently.
यस्य नास्ति समो वीर्ये पृथिव्यामपि कश्चन ।
सत्यसंधस्य शूरस्य संग्रामेष्वपलायिनः ॥१०॥
10. yasya nāsti samo vīrye pṛthivyāmapi kaścana ,
satyasaṁdhasya śūrasya saṁgrāmeṣvapalāyinaḥ.
10. yasya na asti samaḥ vīrye pṛthivyām api kaścana
satyasaṃdhasya śūrasya saṃgrāmeṣu apalāyinaḥ
10. yasya vīrye pṛthivyām api kaścana samaḥ na asti
satyasaṃdhasya śūrasya saṃgrāmeṣu apalāyinaḥ
10. Whose equal in valor is not to be found anywhere, even on earth; of the one whose vows are true, the hero who never flees in battles.
कुरुध्वमुदकं तस्य भ्रातुरक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
स हि वः पूर्वजो भ्राता भास्करान्मय्यजायत ।
कुण्डली कवची शूरो दिवाकरसमप्रभः ॥११॥
11. kurudhvamudakaṁ tasya bhrāturakliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
sa hi vaḥ pūrvajo bhrātā bhāskarānmayyajāyata ,
kuṇḍalī kavacī śūro divākarasamaprabhaḥ.
11. kurudhvam udakaṃ tasya bhrātuḥ
akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ saḥ hi vaḥ pūrvajaḥ
bhrātā bhāskarāt mayi ajāyata kuṇḍalī
kavacī śūraḥ divākarasamaprabhaḥ
11. vaḥ bhrātuḥ akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ tasya
udakaṃ kurudhvam hi saḥ vaḥ pūrvajaḥ
bhrātā bhāskarāt mayi ajāyata kuṇḍalī
kavacī śūraḥ divākarasamaprabhaḥ
11. Perform the water offering for him, your brother whose deeds are unfailing. For he is indeed your elder brother, born of the sun-god (bhāskara) in me. He possessed earrings and armor, was a hero, and shone with splendor equal to the sun.
श्रुत्वा तु पाण्डवाः सर्वे मातुर्वचनमप्रियम् ।
कर्णमेवानुशोचन्त भूयश्चार्ततराभवन् ॥१२॥
12. śrutvā tu pāṇḍavāḥ sarve māturvacanamapriyam ,
karṇamevānuśocanta bhūyaścārtatarābhavan.
12. śrutvā tu pāṇḍavāḥ sarve mātuḥ vacanam apriyam
karṇam eva anuśocantaḥ bhūyaḥ ca ārtatarā abhavan
12. pāṇḍavāḥ sarve mātuḥ apriyam vacanam śrutvā tu
karṇam eva anuśocantaḥ bhūyaḥ ca ārtatarā abhavan
12. Upon hearing their mother's distressing words, all the Pāṇḍavas, lamenting solely for Karṇa, became even more miserable.
ततः स पुरुषव्याघ्रः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
उवाच मातरं वीरो निःश्वसन्निव पन्नगः ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ sa puruṣavyāghraḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
uvāca mātaraṁ vīro niḥśvasanniva pannagaḥ.
13. tataḥ saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
uvāca mātaram vīraḥ niḥśvasan iva pannagaḥ
13. tataḥ saḥ vīraḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ kuntīputraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ pannagaḥ iva niḥśvasan mātaram uvāca
13. Then, that hero, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī and a tiger among men, spoke to his mother, sighing like a serpent.
यस्येषुपातमासाद्य नान्यस्तिष्ठेद्धनंजयात् ।
कथं पुत्रो भवत्यां स देवगर्भः पुराभवत् ॥१४॥
14. yasyeṣupātamāsādya nānyastiṣṭheddhanaṁjayāt ,
kathaṁ putro bhavatyāṁ sa devagarbhaḥ purābhavat.
14. yasya iṣupātam āsādya na anyaḥ tiṣṭhet dhanaṃjayāt
katham putraḥ bhavatyām saḥ devagarbhaḥ purā abhavat
14. yasya iṣupātam āsādya dhanaṃjayāt anyaḥ na tiṣṭhet,
saḥ devagarbhaḥ putraḥ bhavatyām purā katham abhavat?
14. How could that divine child (devagarbha), whose range of arrows no one could withstand but Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), have been born from you?
यस्य बाहुप्रतापेन तापिताः सर्वतो वयम् ।
तमग्निमिव वस्त्रेण कथं छादितवत्यसि ।
यस्य बाहुबलं घोरं धार्तराष्ट्रैरुपासितम् ॥१५॥
15. yasya bāhupratāpena tāpitāḥ sarvato vayam ,
tamagnimiva vastreṇa kathaṁ chāditavatyasi ,
yasya bāhubalaṁ ghoraṁ dhārtarāṣṭrairupāsitam.
15. yasya bāhupratāpena tāpitāḥ sarvataḥ
vayam tam agnim iva vastreṇa
katham chāditavatī asi yasya
bāhubalam ghoram dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ upāsitam
15. yasya bāhupratāpena vayam sarvataḥ tāpitāḥ; yasya ghoram bāhubalam dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ upāsitam,
tam vastreṇa agnim iva katham chāditavatī asi?
15. How could you have concealed, like fire covered by a cloth, the one by whose mighty arms we were completely tormented, and whose formidable arm-strength was relied upon by the Dhārtarāṣṭras?
नान्यः कुन्तीसुतात्कर्णादगृह्णाद्रथिनां रथी ।
स नः प्रथमजो भ्राता सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
असूत तं भवत्यग्रे कथमद्भुतविक्रमम् ॥१६॥
16. nānyaḥ kuntīsutātkarṇādagṛhṇādrathināṁ rathī ,
sa naḥ prathamajo bhrātā sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
asūta taṁ bhavatyagre kathamadbhutavikramam.
16. na anyaḥ kuntīsutāt karṇāt agṛhṇāt
rathinām rathī sa naḥ prathamajaḥ bhrātā
sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ asūt tam
bhavatī agre katham adbhutavikramam
16. kuntīsutāt karṇāt rathinām rathī anyaḥ na agṛhṇāt.
saḥ naḥ prathamajaḥ bhrātā sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ (asti).
bhavatī agre adbhutavikramam tam katham asūt?
16. No other charioteer among warriors could prevail against Karna, the son of Kunti. He was our elder brother, the foremost among all weapon-bearers. How did you, revered mother, first give birth to such a one of astonishing prowess (vikrama)?
अहो भवत्या मन्त्रस्य पिधानेन वयं हताः ।
निधनेन हि कर्णस्य पीडिताः स्म सबान्धवाः ॥१७॥
17. aho bhavatyā mantrasya pidhānena vayaṁ hatāḥ ,
nidhanena hi karṇasya pīḍitāḥ sma sabāndhavāḥ.
17. aho bhavatyāḥ mantrasya pidhānena vayam hatāḥ
nidhanena hi karṇasya pīḍitāḥ sma sabāndhavāḥ
17. aho! bhavatyāḥ mantrasya pidhānena vayam hatāḥ.
hi karṇasya nidhanena sabāndhavāḥ (vayam) pīḍitāḥ sma.
17. Oh, by the concealment of your secret counsel (mantra), we have been ruined! Indeed, by the death of Karna, we, along with all our kinsmen, are greatly afflicted.
अभिमन्योर्विनाशेन द्रौपदेयवधेन च ।
पाञ्चालानां च नाशेन कुरूणां पतनेन च ॥१८॥
18. abhimanyorvināśena draupadeyavadhena ca ,
pāñcālānāṁ ca nāśena kurūṇāṁ patanena ca.
18. abhimanyoḥ vināśena draupadeyavadhena ca
pāñcālānām ca nāśena kurūṇām patanena ca
18. abhimanyoḥ vināśena ca draupadeyavadhena ca pāñcālānām nāśena ca kurūṇām patanena ca.
18. By the destruction of Abhimanyu, and by the slaughter of Draupadi's sons, and by the annihilation of the Pañcālas, and by the downfall of the Kurus...
ततः शतगुणं दुःखमिदं मामस्पृशद्भृशम् ।
कर्णमेवानुशोचन्हि दह्याम्यग्नाविवाहितः ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ śataguṇaṁ duḥkhamidaṁ māmaspṛśadbhṛśam ,
karṇamevānuśocanhi dahyāmyagnāvivāhitaḥ.
19. tataḥ śataguṇam duḥkham idam mām aspṛśat bhṛśam
karṇam eva anuśocan hi dahyāmi agnau iva ahitaḥ
19. tataḥ idam śataguṇam duḥkham mām bhṛśam aspṛśat.
hi karṇam eva anuśocan (aham) agnau iva ahitaḥ dahyāmi.
19. Compared to all that, this sorrow, a hundred times greater, has intensely afflicted me. Indeed, lamenting for Karna alone, I am burning as if in fire, yet not placed (ahita) within it.
न हि स्म किंचिदप्राप्यं भवेदपि दिवि स्थितम् ।
न च स्म वैशसं घोरं कौरवान्तकरं भवेत् ॥२०॥
20. na hi sma kiṁcidaprāpyaṁ bhavedapi divi sthitam ,
na ca sma vaiśasaṁ ghoraṁ kauravāntakaraṁ bhavet.
20. na hi sma kiñcit aprāpyam bhavet api divi sthitam
na ca sma vaiśasam ghoram kauravaantakaram bhavet
20. hi sma kiñcit divi stitam api aprāpyam na bhavet
ca sma ghoram kauravaantakaram vaiśasam na bhavet
20. Indeed, nothing would have been unattainable, even if it were situated in heaven. Nor would there have been such a terrible and destructive calamity that brought about the end of the Kauravas.
एवं विलप्य बहुलं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
विनदञ्शनकै राजंश्चकारास्योदकं प्रभुः ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ vilapya bahulaṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
vinadañśanakai rājaṁścakārāsyodakaṁ prabhuḥ.
21. evam vilapya bahulam dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
vinadan śanakaiḥ rājan cakāra asya udakam prabhuḥ
21. rājan evam bahulam vilapya vinadan dharmarājaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prabhuḥ asya udakam cakāra
21. Having thus lamented extensively, King Yudhishthira (the king of natural law (dharma)), O King, slowly crying out, performed the water oblations for him (Karna), being the lord (prabhu).
ततो विनेदुः सहसा स्त्रीपुंसास्तत्र सर्वशः ।
अभितो ये स्थितास्तत्र तस्मिन्नुदककर्मणि ॥२२॥
22. tato vineduḥ sahasā strīpuṁsāstatra sarvaśaḥ ,
abhito ye sthitāstatra tasminnudakakarmaṇi.
22. tataḥ vineduḥ sahasā strīpuṃsāḥ tatra sarvaśaḥ
abhitaḥ ye sthitāḥ tatra tasmin udakakarmaṇi
22. tataḥ tatra sarvaśaḥ ye abhitaḥ sthitāḥ
strīpuṃsāḥ tasmin udakakarmaṇi sahasā vineduḥ
22. Then, suddenly, men and women alike, all those who were present there on all sides during that water ritual (karma), cried out.
तत आनाययामास कर्णस्य सपरिच्छदम् ।
स्त्रियः कुरुपतिर्धीमान्भ्रातुः प्रेम्णा युधिष्ठिरः ॥२३॥
23. tata ānāyayāmāsa karṇasya saparicchadam ,
striyaḥ kurupatirdhīmānbhrātuḥ premṇā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
23. tataḥ ānāyayāmāsa karṇasya saparicchadam striyaḥ
kurupatiḥ dhīmān bhrātuḥ premṇā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
23. tataḥ dhīmān kurupatiḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhrātuḥ
premṇā karṇasya striyaḥ saparicchadam ānāyayāmāsa
23. Then, the intelligent lord of the Kurus, Yudhishthira, out of love for his brother, caused Karna's women to be brought, along with their retinue.
स ताभिः सह धर्मात्मा प्रेतकृत्यमनन्तरम् ।
कृत्वोत्ततार गङ्गायाः सलिलादाकुलेन्द्रियः ॥२४॥
24. sa tābhiḥ saha dharmātmā pretakṛtyamanantaram ,
kṛtvottatāra gaṅgāyāḥ salilādākulendriyaḥ.
24. sa tābhiḥ saha dharmātmā pretakṛtyam anantaram
kṛtvā uttatāra gaṅgāyāḥ salilāt ākulendriyaḥ
24. saḥ dharmātmā tābhiḥ saha anantaram pretakṛtyam
kṛtvā ākulendriyaḥ gaṅgāyāḥ salilāt uttatāra
24. With those women, that righteous-souled (dharmātmā) man, after immediately performing the funeral rites, emerged from the waters of the Gaṅgā, his senses agitated.
