कृप उवाच ।
सदैव तव राधेय युद्धे क्रूरतरा मतिः ।
नार्थानां प्रकृतिं वेत्थ नानुबन्धमवेक्षसे ॥१॥
1. kṛpa uvāca ,
sadaiva tava rādheya yuddhe krūratarā matiḥ ,
nārthānāṁ prakṛtiṁ vettha nānubandhamavekṣase.

1. Kṛpa said: O son of Rādhā, your mind (mati) is always exceedingly cruel in battle. You neither know the true nature (prakṛti) of matters nor do you consider their consequences.
नया हि बहवः सन्ति शास्त्राण्याश्रित्य चिन्तिताः ।
तेषां युद्धं तु पापिष्ठं वेदयन्ति पुराविदः ॥२॥
2. nayā hi bahavaḥ santi śāstrāṇyāśritya cintitāḥ ,
teṣāṁ yuddhaṁ tu pāpiṣṭhaṁ vedayanti purāvidaḥ.
2. nayāḥ hi bahavaḥ santi śāstrāṇi āśritya cintitāḥ
teṣām yuddham tu pāpiṣṭham vedayanti purāvidaḥ
2. Indeed, many policies (naya) are devised by relying on the scriptures (śāstra). But among these, ancient scholars (purāvida) declare war to be the most sinful (pāpiṣṭha).
देशकालेन संयुक्तं युद्धं विजयदं भवेत् ।
हीनकालं तदेवेह फलवन्न भवत्युत ।
देशे काले च विक्रान्तं कल्याणाय विधीयते ॥३॥
3. deśakālena saṁyuktaṁ yuddhaṁ vijayadaṁ bhavet ,
hīnakālaṁ tadeveha phalavanna bhavatyuta ,
deśe kāle ca vikrāntaṁ kalyāṇāya vidhīyate.
3. deśakālena saṃyuktam yuddham
vijayadam bhavet hīnakālam tat eva iha
phalavat na bhavati uta deśe kāle
ca vikrāntam kalyāṇāya vidhīyate
3. A battle (yuddha) that is aligned with the proper place and time (deśakāla) may bring victory. But that very battle, if ill-timed, is not fruitful here. And a valiant act (vikrānta), when carried out at the right place and time, is conducive to well-being.
आनुकूल्येन कार्याणामन्तरं संविधीयताम् ।
भारं हि रथकारस्य न व्यवस्यन्ति पण्डिताः ॥४॥
4. ānukūlyena kāryāṇāmantaraṁ saṁvidhīyatām ,
bhāraṁ hi rathakārasya na vyavasyanti paṇḍitāḥ.
4. ānukūlyena kāryāṇām antaram saṃvidhīyatām |
bhāram hi rathakārasya na vyavasyanti paṇḍitāḥ
4. One should manage the intricacies of tasks favorably. Indeed, wise people (paṇḍitāḥ) do not undertake the burden of a chariot-maker.
परिचिन्त्य तु पार्थेन संनिपातो न नः क्षमः ।
एकः कुरूनभ्यरक्षदेकश्चाग्निमतर्पयत् ॥५॥
5. paricintya tu pārthena saṁnipāto na naḥ kṣamaḥ ,
ekaḥ kurūnabhyarakṣadekaścāgnimatarpayat.
5. paricintya tu pārtena saṃnipātaḥ na naḥ kṣamaḥ
| ekaḥ kurūn abhyarakṣat ekaḥ ca agnim atarpayat
5. However, having considered by Arjuna (Pārtha), a confrontation is not suitable for us. One (Bhīma) protected the Kurus, and another (Arjuna) satisfied Agni.
एकश्च पञ्च वर्षाणि ब्रह्मचर्यमधारयत् ।
एकः सुभद्रामारोप्य द्वैरथे कृष्णमाह्वयत् ।
अस्मिन्नेव वने कृष्णो हृतां कृष्णामवाजयत् ॥६॥
6. ekaśca pañca varṣāṇi brahmacaryamadhārayat ,
ekaḥ subhadrāmāropya dvairathe kṛṣṇamāhvayat ,
asminneva vane kṛṣṇo hṛtāṁ kṛṣṇāmavājayat.
6. ekaḥ ca pañca varṣāṇi brahmacaryam
adhārayat | ekaḥ subhadrām āropya
dvairathe kṛṣṇam āhvayat | asmin
eva vane kṛṣṇaḥ hṛtām kṛṣṇām avājayat
6. One (Arjuna) observed celibacy (brahmacarya) for five years. One (Arjuna), having placed Subhadrā (on his chariot), challenged Kṛṣṇa to a chariot-borne combat. In this very forest, Kṛṣṇa recovered the abducted Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā).
एकश्च पञ्च वर्षाणि शक्रादस्त्राण्यशिक्षत ।
एकः सांयमिनीं जित्वा कुरूणामकरोद्यशः ॥७॥
7. ekaśca pañca varṣāṇi śakrādastrāṇyaśikṣata ,
ekaḥ sāṁyaminīṁ jitvā kurūṇāmakarodyaśaḥ.
7. ekaḥ ca pañca varṣāṇi śakrāt astrāṇi aśikṣata
| ekaḥ sāṃyaminīm jitvā kurūṇām akarot yaśaḥ
7. And one (Arjuna) learned divine weapons (astras) from Indra (Śakra) for five years. One (Bhīma), having conquered Saṃyaminī, brought fame to the Kurus.
एको गन्धर्वराजानं चित्रसेनमरिंदमः ।
विजिग्ये तरसा संख्ये सेनां चास्य सुदुर्जयाम् ॥८॥
8. eko gandharvarājānaṁ citrasenamariṁdamaḥ ,
vijigye tarasā saṁkhye senāṁ cāsya sudurjayām.
8. ekaḥ gandharvarājānam citrasenam ariṃdamaḥ
vijigye tarasā saṅkhye senām ca asya sudurjayām
8. The subduer of enemies (ariṃdama), he alone, conquered King Citrasena of the Gandharvas and his very formidable army with great force in battle.
तथा निवातकवचाः कालखञ्जाश्च दानवाः ।
दैवतैरप्यवध्यास्ते एकेन युधि पातिताः ॥९॥
9. tathā nivātakavacāḥ kālakhañjāśca dānavāḥ ,
daivatairapyavadhyāste ekena yudhi pātitāḥ.
9. tathā nivātakavacāḥ kālakhañjāḥ ca dānavāḥ
daivataiḥ api avadhyāḥ te ekena yudhi pātitāḥ
9. Similarly, the Dānavas known as Nivātakavacas and Kālakhañjas, who were impossible to kill even for the gods, were struck down in battle by one person (Arjuna).
एकेन हि त्वया कर्ण किं नामेह कृतं पुरा ।
एकैकेन यथा तेषां भूमिपाला वशीकृताः ॥१०॥
10. ekena hi tvayā karṇa kiṁ nāmeha kṛtaṁ purā ,
ekaikena yathā teṣāṁ bhūmipālā vaśīkṛtāḥ.
10. ekena hi tvayā karṇa kim nāma iha kṛtam purā
ekaikena yathā teṣām bhūmipālāḥ vaśīkṛtāḥ
10. O Karṇa, what indeed has been accomplished by you alone in this world previously? Consider how by each one of them (Arjuna and the other Pāṇḍavas), the kings of the earth were subdued.
इन्द्रोऽपि हि न पार्थेन संयुगे योद्धुमर्हति ।
यस्तेनाशंसते योद्धुं कर्तव्यं तस्य भेषजम् ॥११॥
11. indro'pi hi na pārthena saṁyuge yoddhumarhati ,
yastenāśaṁsate yoddhuṁ kartavyaṁ tasya bheṣajam.
11. indraḥ api hi na pārthena saṃyuge yoddhum arhati
yaḥ tena āśaṃsate yoddhum kartavyam tasya bheṣajam
11. Indeed, not even Indra is capable of fighting Pārtha (Arjuna) in battle. For anyone who desires to fight him, a remedy (bheṣajam) should be administered to that person.
आशीविषस्य क्रुद्धस्य पाणिमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम् ।
अविमृश्य प्रदेशिन्या दंष्ट्रामादातुमिच्छसि ॥१२॥
12. āśīviṣasya kruddhasya pāṇimudyamya dakṣiṇam ,
avimṛśya pradeśinyā daṁṣṭrāmādātumicchasi.
12. āśīviṣasya kruddhasya pāṇim udyamya dakṣiṇam
| avimṛśya pradeśinyā daṃṣṭrām ādātum icchasi
12. You wish to grasp the fangs of a furious venomous snake with your right hand, without considering the danger, by using your index finger.
अथ वा कुञ्जरं मत्तमेक एव चरन्वने ।
अनङ्कुशं समारुह्य नगरं गन्तुमिच्छसि ॥१३॥
13. atha vā kuñjaraṁ mattameka eva caranvane ,
anaṅkuśaṁ samāruhya nagaraṁ gantumicchasi.
13. atha vā kuñjaram mattam ekaḥ eva caran vane
| anaṅkuśam samāruhya nagaram gantum icchasi
13. Or else, wandering alone in the forest, you desire to ride an un-goaded mad elephant into the city.
समिद्धं पावकं वापि घृतमेदोवसाहुतम् ।
घृताक्तश्चीरवासास्त्वं मध्येनोत्तर्तुमिच्छसि ॥१४॥
14. samiddhaṁ pāvakaṁ vāpi ghṛtamedovasāhutam ,
ghṛtāktaścīravāsāstvaṁ madhyenottartumicchasi.
14. samiddham pāvakam vā api ghṛtamedovasāhutam |
ghṛtāktaḥ cīravāsāḥ tvam madhyena uttartum icchasi
14. Or else, you, smeared with ghee and dressed in bark-garments, wish to cross through the middle of a blazing fire, which has been offered ghee, fat, and marrow.
आत्मानं यः समुद्बध्य कण्ठे बद्ध्वा महाशिलाम् ।
समुद्रं प्रतरेद्दोर्भ्यां तत्र किं नाम पौरुषम् ॥१५॥
15. ātmānaṁ yaḥ samudbadhya kaṇṭhe baddhvā mahāśilām ,
samudraṁ pratareddorbhyāṁ tatra kiṁ nāma pauruṣam.
15. ātmānam yaḥ samudbadhya kaṇṭhe baddhvā mahāśilām |
samudram prataret dorbhyām tatra kim nāma pauruṣam
15. What kind of heroism (pauruṣam) is it for someone who, having bound their own self (ātman) by the neck with a great stone, then attempts to cross the ocean using only their arms?
अकृतास्त्रः कृतास्त्रं वै बलवन्तं सुदुर्बलः ।
तादृशं कर्ण यः पार्थं योद्धुमिच्छेत्स दुर्मतिः ॥१६॥
16. akṛtāstraḥ kṛtāstraṁ vai balavantaṁ sudurbalaḥ ,
tādṛśaṁ karṇa yaḥ pārthaṁ yoddhumicchetsa durmatiḥ.
16. akṛtāstraḥ kṛtāstraṃ vai balavantaṃ sudurbalaḥ
tādṛśaṃ karṇa yaḥ pārthaṃ yoddhum icchet saḥ durmatiḥ
16. O Karṇa, a person who is unaccomplished in weaponry and very weak, yet desires to fight such a powerful and skilled Arjuna (Pārtha), is indeed foolish.
अस्माभिरेष निकृतो वर्षाणीह त्रयोदश ।
सिंहः पाशविनिर्मुक्तो न नः शेषं करिष्यति ॥१७॥
17. asmābhireṣa nikṛto varṣāṇīha trayodaśa ,
siṁhaḥ pāśavinirmukto na naḥ śeṣaṁ kariṣyati.
17. asmābhiḥ eṣaḥ nikṛtaḥ varṣāṇi iha trayodaśa
siṃhaḥ pāśavinirmuktaḥ na naḥ śeṣaṃ kariṣyati
17. This one (Arjuna) has been tormented by us for thirteen years. Now, like a lion freed from a noose, he will not leave any of us remaining.
एकान्ते पार्थमासीनं कूपेऽग्निमिव संवृतम् ।
अज्ञानादभ्यवस्कन्द्य प्राप्ताः स्मो भयमुत्तमम् ॥१८॥
18. ekānte pārthamāsīnaṁ kūpe'gnimiva saṁvṛtam ,
ajñānādabhyavaskandya prāptāḥ smo bhayamuttamam.
18. ekānte pārthaṃ āsīnaṃ kūpe agnim iva saṃvṛtam
ajñānāt abhyavaskandya prāptāḥ smaḥ bhayaṃ uttamam
18. Because of our ignorance, we assailed Arjuna (Pārtha) while he was seated in solitude, like a fire concealed in a well. As a result, we have now incurred great fear.
सह युध्यामहे पार्थमागतं युद्धदुर्मदम् ।
सैन्यास्तिष्ठन्तु संनद्धा व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ॥१९॥
19. saha yudhyāmahe pārthamāgataṁ yuddhadurmadam ,
sainyāstiṣṭhantu saṁnaddhā vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ.
19. saha yudhyāmahe pārthaṃ āgataṃ yuddhadurmadam
sainyāḥ tiṣṭhantu sannaddhāḥ vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
19. We shall fight alongside Arjuna (Pārtha), who has arrived, intoxicated with the fervor of battle. Let the armies stand ready, with their battle formations arrayed, prepared to strike.
द्रोणो दुर्योधनो भीष्मो भवान्द्रौणिस्तथा वयम् ।
सर्वे युध्यामहे पार्थं कर्ण मा साहसं कृथाः ॥२०॥
20. droṇo duryodhano bhīṣmo bhavāndrauṇistathā vayam ,
sarve yudhyāmahe pārthaṁ karṇa mā sāhasaṁ kṛthāḥ.
20. droṇaḥ duryodhanaḥ bhīṣmaḥ bhavān drauṇiḥ tathā vayam
sarve yudhyāmahe pārtham karṇa mā sāhasam kṛthāḥ
20. Droṇa, Duryodhana, Bhīṣma, you, Drauṇi, and all of us are fighting Pārtha. Karṇa, do not act so rashly.
वयं व्यवसितं पार्थं वज्रपाणिमिवोद्यतम् ।
षड्रथाः प्रतियुध्येम तिष्ठेम यदि संहताः ॥२१॥
21. vayaṁ vyavasitaṁ pārthaṁ vajrapāṇimivodyatam ,
ṣaḍrathāḥ pratiyudhyema tiṣṭhema yadi saṁhatāḥ.
21. vayam vyavasitam pārtham vajrapāṇim iva udyatam
ṣaḍrathāḥ pratiyudhyema tiṣṭhema yadi saṃhatāḥ
21. We, the six charioteers, could fight against Pārtha, who is resolute and ready like Indra with his uplifted thunderbolt, if we remain united.
व्यूढानीकानि सैन्यानि यत्ताः परमधन्विनः ।
युध्यामहेऽर्जुनं संख्ये दानवा वासवं यथा ॥२२॥
22. vyūḍhānīkāni sainyāni yattāḥ paramadhanvinaḥ ,
yudhyāmahe'rjunaṁ saṁkhye dānavā vāsavaṁ yathā.
22. vyūḍhānīkāni sainyāni yattāḥ paramadhanvinaḥ
yudhyāmahe arjunam saṃkhye dānavāḥ vāsavam yathā
22. Our armies are arrayed in battle formations, and the supreme archers are ready. We will fight Arjuna in battle, just as the Dānavas (demons) fight Indra.
