इत्युक्तस्त्वर्जुनस्तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्तमब्रवीत् ।
शृणु मे हैहयश्रेष्ठ कर्मात्रेः सुमहात्मनः ॥१॥

1. Bhīṣma said: Having been thus addressed, Arjuna remained silent. Vāyu then said to him: 'Listen to me, O best among the Haihayas, about the deeds (karma) of the exceedingly great-souled Atri.'
घोरे तमस्ययुध्यन्त सहिता देवदानवाः ।
अविध्यत शरैस्तत्र स्वर्भानुः सोमभास्करौ ॥२॥
2. ghore tamasyayudhyanta sahitā devadānavāḥ ,
avidhyata śaraistatra svarbhānuḥ somabhāskarau.

2. In dreadful darkness, the gods (devas) and demons (dānavas) fought together. There, Svarbhānu pierced the Moon (Soma) and the Sun (Bhāskara) with arrows.
अथ ते तमसा ग्रस्ता निहन्यन्ते स्म दानवैः ।
देवा नृपतिशार्दूल सहैव बलिभिस्तदा ॥३॥
3. atha te tamasā grastā nihanyante sma dānavaiḥ ,
devā nṛpatiśārdūla sahaiva balibhistadā.

3. Then those (gods), seized by darkness (tamas), were being slain by the demons (dānavas). O tiger among kings, the gods (devas) themselves were (present) at that time, even with the mighty (demons) (balibhiḥ).
असुरैर्वध्यमानास्ते क्षीणप्राणा दिवौकसः ।
अपश्यन्त तपस्यन्तमत्रिं विप्रं महावने ॥४॥
4. asurairvadhyamānāste kṣīṇaprāṇā divaukasaḥ ,
apaśyanta tapasyantamatriṁ vipraṁ mahāvane.

4. Those gods, with their vital energies depleted and being slain by the asuras, saw the sage Atri performing austerities (tapas) in the great forest.
अथैनमब्रुवन्देवाः शान्तक्रोधं जितेन्द्रियम् ।
असुरैरिषुभिर्विद्धौ चन्द्रादित्याविमावुभौ ॥५॥
5. athainamabruvandevāḥ śāntakrodhaṁ jitendriyam ,
asurairiṣubhirviddhau candrādityāvimāvubhau.

5. Then the gods said to him, who had subdued his anger and conquered his senses: 'These two, the moon and the sun, have been pierced by the asuras with arrows.'
वयं वध्यामहे चापि शत्रुभिस्तमसावृते ।
नाधिगच्छाम शान्तिं च भयात्त्रायस्व नः प्रभो ॥६॥
6. vayaṁ vadhyāmahe cāpi śatrubhistamasāvṛte ,
nādhigacchāma śāntiṁ ca bhayāttrāyasva naḥ prabho.
6. vayam vadhyāmahe ca api śatrubhiḥ tamasāvṛte na
adhigacchāma śāntim ca bhayāt trāyasva naḥ prabho
6. vayam ca api śatrubhiḥ vadhyāmahe tamasāvṛte śāntim

6. We are also being slain by enemies, and in this state enveloped by darkness, we find no peace. O Lord, save us from fear!
कथं रक्षामि भवतस्तेऽब्रुवंश्चन्द्रमा भव ।
तिमिरघ्नश्च सविता दस्युहा चैव नो भव ॥७॥
7. kathaṁ rakṣāmi bhavataste'bruvaṁścandramā bhava ,
timiraghnaśca savitā dasyuhā caiva no bhava.
7. katham rakṣāmi bhavataḥ te abruvan candramā bhava
timiraghnaḥ ca savitā dasyuhā ca eva naḥ bhava
7. katham bhavataḥ rakṣāmi te abruvan candramā bhava

7. Atri asked, 'How can I protect you?' They (the gods) replied: 'Be the Moon, and be the Sun, the dispeller of darkness; and indeed, be our destroyer of enemies.'
एवमुक्तस्तदात्रिस्तु तमोनुदभवच्छशी ।
अपश्यत्सौम्यभावं च सूर्यस्य प्रतिदर्शनम् ॥८॥
8. evamuktastadātristu tamonudabhavacchaśī ,
apaśyatsaumyabhāvaṁ ca sūryasya pratidarśanam.

8. When addressed in this manner, Atri then became the moon, dispelling darkness. He also perceived the sun's gentle disposition and its clear appearance.
दृष्ट्वा नातिप्रभं सोमं तथा सूर्यं च पार्थिव ।
प्रकाशमकरोदत्रिस्तपसा स्वेन संयुगे ॥९॥
9. dṛṣṭvā nātiprabhaṁ somaṁ tathā sūryaṁ ca pārthiva ,
prakāśamakarodatristapasā svena saṁyuge.

9. O king, having seen the moon not excessively bright and also the sun, Atri then created light by his own ascetic endeavor (tapas) in that cosmic setting.
जगद्वितिमिरं चापि प्रदीप्तमकरोत्तदा ।
व्यजयच्छत्रुसंघांश्च देवानां स्वेन तेजसा ॥१०॥
10. jagadvitimiraṁ cāpi pradīptamakarottadā ,
vyajayacchatrusaṁghāṁśca devānāṁ svena tejasā.
10. jagat vitimiram ca api pradīptam akarot tadā
vyajayat śatrusaṅghān ca devānām svena tejasā
10. tadā jagat vitimiram ca api pradīptam akarot
ca svena tejasā devānām śatrusaṅghān vyajayat
10. Then, he also made the world free of darkness and ablaze with light. And with his own power, he vanquished the legions of the gods' adversaries.
अत्रिणा दह्यमानांस्तान्दृष्ट्वा देवा महासुरान् ।
पराक्रमैस्तेऽपि तदा व्यत्यघ्नन्नत्रिरक्षिताः ॥११॥
11. atriṇā dahyamānāṁstāndṛṣṭvā devā mahāsurān ,
parākramaiste'pi tadā vyatyaghnannatrirakṣitāḥ.
11. atriṇā dahyamānān tān dṛṣṭvā devāḥ mahāsurān
parākramaiḥ te api tadā vyatyaghnan atrirakṣitāḥ
11. devāḥ,

11. When they saw those great asuras being consumed by Atri, the gods, thus protected by Atri, also struck them down then with their own valorous deeds.
उद्भासितश्च सविता देवास्त्राता हतासुराः ।
अत्रिणा त्वथ सोमत्वं कृतमुत्तमतेजसा ॥१२॥
12. udbhāsitaśca savitā devāstrātā hatāsurāḥ ,
atriṇā tvatha somatvaṁ kṛtamuttamatejasā.
12. udbhāsitaḥ ca savitā devāḥ trātāḥ hata-asurāḥ
atriṇā tu atha somatvam kṛtam uttama-tejasā
12. ca savitā udbhāsitaḥ devāḥ trātāḥ hata-asurāḥ

12. The sun was made to shine forth, the gods were protected, and the asuras were slain. Then, by Atri, who possessed supreme splendor, the state of being Soma (the Moon) was brought about.
अद्वितीयेन मुनिना जपता चर्मवाससा ।
फलभक्षेण राजर्षे पश्य कर्मात्रिणा कृतम् ॥१३॥
13. advitīyena muninā japatā carmavāsasā ,
phalabhakṣeṇa rājarṣe paśya karmātriṇā kṛtam.

13. O royal sage, behold the deed (karma) performed by Atri, the unparalleled sage (muni), who was engaged in chanting, wore animal skin, and subsisted on fruits.
तस्यापि विस्तरेणोक्तं कर्मात्रेः सुमहात्मनः ।
ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वमत्रितः क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१४॥
14. tasyāpi vistareṇoktaṁ karmātreḥ sumahātmanaḥ ,
bravīmyahaṁ brūhi vā tvamatritaḥ kṣatriyaṁ varam.
14. tasya api vistareṇa uktam karma atreḥ su-mahā-ātmanaḥ
bravīmi aham brūhi vā tvam atritaḥ kṣatriyam varam
14. tasya su-mahā-ātmanaḥ atreḥ karma api vistareṇa uktam
aham bravīmi vā tvam kṣatriyam varam atritaḥ brūhi
14. The deeds (karma) of that very great-souled (ātman) Atri have also been narrated in detail. I will speak, or you, O excellent warrior, may speak about (Atri) from his lineage.
इत्युक्तस्त्वर्जुनस्तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्तमब्रवीत् ।
शृणु राजन्महत्कर्म च्यवनस्य महात्मनः ॥१५॥
15. ityuktastvarjunastūṣṇīmabhūdvāyustamabravīt ,
śṛṇu rājanmahatkarma cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ.

śṛṇu rājan mahat karma cyavanasya mahā-ātmanaḥ

15. When this was said, Arjuna remained silent. Then Vayu spoke to him: 'Listen, O king, to the great deed (karma) of the great-souled (ātman) Chyavana!'
अश्विनोः प्रतिसंश्रुत्य च्यवनः पाकशासनम् ।
प्रोवाच सहितं देवैः सोमपावश्विनौ कुरु ॥१६॥
16. aśvinoḥ pratisaṁśrutya cyavanaḥ pākaśāsanam ,
provāca sahitaṁ devaiḥ somapāvaśvinau kuru.

16. Having received a reciprocal promise from the two Aśvins, Cyavana spoke to Pākaśāsana (Indra), who was accompanied by the gods: "Make the Aśvins drinkers of soma."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
अस्माभिर्वर्जितावेतौ भवेतां सोमपौ कथम् ।
देवैर्न संमितावेतौ तस्मान्मैवं वदस्व नः ॥१७॥
17. indra uvāca ,
asmābhirvarjitāvetau bhavetāṁ somapau katham ,
devairna saṁmitāvetau tasmānmaivaṁ vadasva naḥ.

katham devaiḥ na saṃmitau etau tasmāt mā evam vadasva naḥ

17. Indra said: "How can these two, excluded by us, become drinkers of soma? These two are not honored by the gods; therefore, do not speak to us in this manner."
अश्विभ्यां सह नेच्छामः पातुं सोमं महाव्रत ।
पिबन्त्वन्ये यथाकामं नाहं पातुमिहोत्सहे ॥१८॥
18. aśvibhyāṁ saha necchāmaḥ pātuṁ somaṁ mahāvrata ,
pibantvanye yathākāmaṁ nāhaṁ pātumihotsahe.
18. aśvibhyām saha na icchāmaḥ pātum somam mahāvrata
pibantu anye yathākāmam na aham pātum iha utsahe
18. mahāvrata aśvibhyām saha somam pātum na icchāmaḥ
anye yathākāmam pibantu aham iha pātum na utsahe
18. "O great observer of vows, we do not wish to drink soma with the two Aśvins. Let others drink as they please; I am not willing to drink here."
च्यवन उवाच ।
न चेत्करिष्यसि वचो मयोक्तं बलसूदन ।
मया प्रमथितः सद्यः सोमं पास्यसि वै मखे ॥१९॥
19. cyavana uvāca ,
na cetkariṣyasi vaco mayoktaṁ balasūdana ,
mayā pramathitaḥ sadyaḥ somaṁ pāsyasi vai makhe.

balasūdana mayā pramatitaḥ sadyaḥ somam pāsyasi vai makhe

19. Cyavana said: "O slayer of Bala, if you do not carry out the command spoken by me, then, tormented by me, you will indeed immediately drink soma at the (Vedic ritual) (yajna)."
ततः कर्म समारब्धं हिताय सहसाश्विनोः ।
च्यवनेन ततो मन्त्रैरभिभूताः सुराभवन् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ karma samārabdhaṁ hitāya sahasāśvinoḥ ,
cyavanena tato mantrairabhibhūtāḥ surābhavan.
20. tataḥ karma samārabdham hitāya sahasā aśvinoḥ
cyavanena tataḥ mantraiḥ abhibhūtāḥ surāḥ abhavan
20. cyavanena sahasā aśvinoḥ hitāya karma samārabdham

20. Then, a ritual (karma) was swiftly commenced by Cyavana for the welfare of the Aśvins. Consequently, the gods became overpowered by the sacred chants.
तत्तु कर्म समारब्धं दृष्ट्वेन्द्रः क्रोधमूर्छितः ।
उद्यम्य विपुलं शैलं च्यवनं समुपाद्रवत् ।
तथा वज्रेण भगवानमर्षाकुललोचनः ॥२१॥
21. tattu karma samārabdhaṁ dṛṣṭvendraḥ krodhamūrchitaḥ ,
udyamya vipulaṁ śailaṁ cyavanaṁ samupādravat ,
tathā vajreṇa bhagavānamarṣākulalocanaḥ.
21. tat tu karma samārabdham dṛṣṭvā indraḥ
krodhamūrcchitaḥ udyamya vipulam
śailam cyavanam samupādravat tathā
vajreṇa bhagavān amarṣākulalocanaḥ
21. tu indraḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ tathā
bhagavān vajreṇa amarṣākulalocanaḥ tat
karma samārabdham dṛṣṭvā vipulam
śailam udyamya cyavanam samupādravat
21. However, upon seeing that ritual (karma) commenced, Indra, overcome with rage, lifted a massive rock and rushed towards Cyavana. The divine one, with eyes agitated by indignation, also held his thunderbolt.
तमापतन्तं दृष्ट्वैव च्यवनस्तपसान्वितः ।
अद्भिः सिक्त्वास्तम्भयत्तं सवज्रं सहपर्वतम् ॥२२॥
22. tamāpatantaṁ dṛṣṭvaiva cyavanastapasānvitaḥ ,
adbhiḥ siktvāstambhayattaṁ savajraṁ sahaparvatam.
22. tam āpatantam dṛṣṭvā eva cyavanaḥ tapasānvitah
adbhiḥ siktvā astambhayat tam savajram sahaparvatam
22. cyavanaḥ tapasānvitah tam āpatantam dṛṣṭvā eva

22. Cyavana, endowed with ascetic power (tapas), upon merely seeing him (Indra) rushing, sprinkled water and immobilized him, along with his thunderbolt and the mountain.
अथेन्द्रस्य महाघोरं सोऽसृजच्छत्रुमेव ह ।
मदं मन्त्राहुतिमयं व्यादितास्यं महामुनिः ॥२३॥
23. athendrasya mahāghoraṁ so'sṛjacchatrumeva ha ,
madaṁ mantrāhutimayaṁ vyāditāsyaṁ mahāmuniḥ.
23. atha indrasya mahāghoram saḥ asṛjat śatrum eva
ha madam mantrāhutimayam vyāditāsyam mahāmuniḥ
23. atha saḥ mahāmuniḥ eva ha indrasya mahāghoram
śatrum madam mantrāhutimayam vyāditāsyam asṛjat
23. Then, the great sage (muni) Cyavana indeed created a very terrible enemy for Indra: Mada, who was formed from the sacred hymn (mantra) oblations and had a gaping mouth.
तस्य दन्तसहस्रं तु बभूव शतयोजनम् ।
द्वियोजनशतास्तस्य दंष्ट्राः परमदारुणाः ।
हनुस्तस्याभवद्भूमावेकश्चास्यास्पृशद्दिवम् ॥२४॥
24. tasya dantasahasraṁ tu babhūva śatayojanam ,
dviyojanaśatāstasya daṁṣṭrāḥ paramadāruṇāḥ ,
hanustasyābhavadbhūmāvekaścāsyāspṛśaddivam.

śatayojanam dviyojanaśatāḥ tasya daṃṣṭrāḥ
paramadāruṇāḥ hanuḥ tasya abhavat

24. His thousand teeth were a hundred yojanas long. His fangs, two hundred yojanas long, were exceedingly terrible. One of his jaws rested on the ground, and the other touched the sky.
जिह्वामूले स्थितास्तस्य सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः ।
तिमेरास्यमनुप्राप्ता यथा मत्स्या महार्णवे ॥२५॥
25. jihvāmūle sthitāstasya sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ ,
timerāsyamanuprāptā yathā matsyā mahārṇave.

timirāsyam anuprāptāḥ yathā matsyāḥ mahārṇave

25. All the gods, along with Indra (Vāsava), were situated at the root of his tongue. They entered his mouth like a Timi fish (in the sea), just as ordinary fish (swim) in the great ocean.
ते संमन्त्र्य ततो देवा मदस्यास्यगतास्तदा ।
अब्रुवन्सहिताः शक्रं प्रणमास्मै द्विजातये ।
अश्विभ्यां सह सोमं च पिबामो विगतज्वराः ॥२६॥
26. te saṁmantrya tato devā madasyāsyagatāstadā ,
abruvansahitāḥ śakraṁ praṇamāsmai dvijātaye ,
aśvibhyāṁ saha somaṁ ca pibāmo vigatajvarāḥ.
26. te sammantrya tataḥ devāḥ madasyāsyagatāḥ
tadā abruvan sahitāḥ śakraṃ
praṇamāḥ asmai dvijātaye aśvibhyām
saha somam ca pibāmaḥ vigatajvarāḥ
26. tataḥ tadā madasyāsyagatāḥ te devāḥ
sammantrya sahitāḥ śakraṃ abruvan
asmai dvijātaye praṇamāḥ aśvibhyām
saha somam ca pibāmaḥ vigatajvarāḥ
26. Then the gods, who had entered Mada's mouth, deliberated together and said to Indra (Śakra), "Let us bow down to this twice-born (dvi-ja) (Chyavana), so that we may drink Soma with the Aśvins, free from distress."
ततः स प्रणतः शक्रश्चकार च्यवनस्य तत् ।
च्यवनः कृतवांस्तौ चाप्यश्विनौ सोमपीथिनौ ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ sa praṇataḥ śakraścakāra cyavanasya tat ,
cyavanaḥ kṛtavāṁstau cāpyaśvinau somapīthinau.
27. tataḥ saḥ praṇataḥ śakraḥ ca cakāra cyavanasya tat
cyavanaḥ kṛtavān tau ca api aśvinau somapīthinau
27. tataḥ saḥ praṇataḥ śakraḥ cyavanasya tat cakāra

27. Then Indra (Śakra), having bowed down, did as Chyavana requested. And Chyavana made those two Aśvins also drinkers of Soma.
ततः प्रत्याहरत्कर्म मदं च व्यभजन्मुनिः ।
अक्षेषु मृगयायां च पाने स्त्रीषु च वीर्यवान् ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ pratyāharatkarma madaṁ ca vyabhajanmuniḥ ,
akṣeṣu mṛgayāyāṁ ca pāne strīṣu ca vīryavān.

akṣeṣu mṛgayāyām ca pāne strīṣu ca vīryavān
28. vīryavān muniḥ tataḥ karma pratyāharat madam ca

28. The powerful sage (muni) then withdrew from his (virtuous) actions (karma) and indulged in arrogance, gambling, hunting, drinking, and women.
एतैर्दोषैर्नरो राजन्क्षयं याति न संशयः ।
तस्मादेतान्नरो नित्यं दूरतः परिवर्जयेत् ॥२९॥
29. etairdoṣairnaro rājankṣayaṁ yāti na saṁśayaḥ ,
tasmādetānnaro nityaṁ dūrataḥ parivarjayet.
29. etaiḥ doṣaiḥ naraḥ rājan kṣayam yāti na saṃśayaḥ
tasmāt etān naraḥ nityam dūrataḥ parivarjayet
29. rājan etaiḥ doṣaiḥ naraḥ kṣayam yāti na saṃśayaḥ
tasmāt naraḥ nityam etān dūrataḥ parivarjayet
29. O king, a person undoubtedly meets ruin because of these faults. Therefore, one should always completely avoid these (vices).
एतत्ते च्यवनस्यापि कर्म राजन्प्रकीर्तितम् ।
ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वं च्यवनात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥३०॥
30. etatte cyavanasyāpi karma rājanprakīrtitam ,
bravīmyahaṁ brūhi vā tvaṁ cyavanātkṣatriyaṁ varam.
30. etat te cyavanasya api karma rājan prakīrtitam
bravīmi aham brūhi vā tvam cyavanāt kṣatriyam varam
30. rājan te cyavanasya api etat karma prakīrtitam aham
bravīmi vā tvam cyavanāt varam kṣatriyam brūhi
30. O king, this (is) the deed (karma) of even Chyavana that has been recounted to you. I shall speak, or you tell (me) who is a superior warrior (kṣatriya) than Chyavana.
