Janamejaya said: "O brahmin (dvija), when Karṇa was thus struck down in battle by Arjuna (Savyasācin), what did the few remaining Kuru warriors then do?"

And seeing the army being roused by the Pāṇḍavas, which was timely, what course of action did King Duryodhana (Suyodhana), the Kuru prince, then adopt?

I wish to hear this; therefore, narrate it, O best of brahmins (dvijottama)! Indeed, I am never satisfied hearing the great deeds of the ancients.

Vaiśampāyana said: "O king, then, when Karṇa was slain, Duryodhana (Suyodhana), the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Dhārtarāṣṭra), was deeply plunged into an ocean of grief, completely hopeless from all sides."

Lamenting "Alas, Karṇa! Alas, Karṇa!" repeatedly, he returned with great difficulty to his own camp, accompanied by the kings who had survived the slaughter.

Even though he was being consoled by kings with arguments established by the sacred texts (śāstra), he found no peace, remembering the killing of Karṇa.

Considering destiny (daiva) and what must inevitably occur to be potent, that king (pārthiva), having made a firm resolution for battle, again set forth for war.

Having properly appointed Śalya as commander-in-chief, that chief among kings (rājapuṅgava), the king, set out for battle accompanied by the surviving kings.

Then, O best among the Bharatas, a very tumultuous battle ensued between the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas, resembling the war between the devas and asuras.

Then, O great king, Śalya, having caused great slaughter to the Pandava army in battle, was struck down by Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira) at midday.

Then, King Duryodhana, whose kinsmen had been slain, retreated from the battlefield and, out of fear of his enemies, entered a dreadful lake.

Then, in the afternoon of that same day, having been surrounded by great charioteers and summoned from the lake, he was struck down by Bhīmasena through strategic skill (yoga).

Then, in the forenoon, Saṃjaya, having arrived from the camp, entered the city, dejected and overwhelmed with sorrow and grief.

15.
And having quickly entered the city, he, distressed and raising his arms, then, trembling, entered the king's abode.

16.
And distressed, he wept, exclaiming, 'Alas, O tiger among men (nara-vyāghra), O king! Oh, alas, we are greatly distressed by the demise of the great soul (mahā-ātman)!'

Alas, how immensely powerful is time, and how supreme is its movement (gati)! For it was during this time that all kings, whose strength was equal to that of Indra (Śakra), were slain.

But that king (mahīpatiḥ), having recovered after a long time, silently pondered, emaciated by the grief for his sons. He sighed like a snake thrown into a pot, O lord of the people.

Saṃjaya also wept there, seeing the distressed king. Similarly, all the women, and the glorious Gāndhārī, also wept.

Then, after a long time, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, that tiger among men (naravyāghra), who was repeatedly becoming bewildered, spoke these words to Vidura.

Let all the women go, and also the glorious Gāndhārī. Similarly, let all these friends go. My mind is greatly wavering.

O best among the Bharatas, thus spoken to, the charioteer, trembling again and again, slowly dismissed those women.

O tormentor of foes, then the miserable Sanjaya, having observed the lord of men there, who had regained consciousness, weeping and greatly distressed...

With folded hands, the charioteer consoled that king, who was sighing again and again, with sweet words.
