1.
Sanjaya said: Having defeated Droṇa, that chief among men (puruṣapravīra), and similarly your principal warriors led by Hārdikya, the foremost hero of the Śinis and the chief among the best of the Kurus, laughed and spoke these words to the charioteer.

2.
O charioteer, we here are merely instruments (nimittamātra). Our enemies have been consumed (dagdhārayaḥ) by Keśava and Phalguna (Arjuna). We merely slay those who have already been slain by that foremost of men (nararṣabha), who is born from the essence of the lord of gods (Sureśa).

Having spoken thus to him, that chief among the Śinis (Śinipuṅgava), that mighty (balī) foremost archer and slayer of enemies (arihā), then in that great battle (mahāmṛdhe) suddenly showering arrows all around (kiransamantāt), swooped down like a hawk (śyena) on its prey.

They (the enemies) were unable to stop from all sides that foremost of men (narāgrya), that chief among men (puruṣapravīra), who, with horses the color of the moon and conch shell, was penetrating the army and going forward, shining like the rays of the sun.

O Bhārata, all the troops considered him to possess unbearable valor and undiminished courage, making him difficult to withstand. His might was like that of Indra, the thousand-eyed god, resembling the sun in the sky when the clouds have dispersed.

Sudarśana, the excellent king, who was full of indignation, an exceedingly wondrous fighter, holding a bow, and wearing golden armor, forcibly restrained Sātyaki as he attacked.

O Bhārata, an exceedingly terrible battle ensued between the two of them. Both your warriors and the Somakas, like hosts of gods, highly praised that engagement, comparing it to the battle between Vṛtra and Indra.

Sudarśana, in battle, pierced the chief of the Sātvatas (Sātyaki) with hundreds of very sharp arrows. But Sātyaki, the foremost of the Śinis, also intercepted those arrows with his own shafts even before they could reach him.

Even Sātyaki, who was like Indra, was similarly shooting arrows at Sudarśana. But Sudarśana, situated on his excellent chariot, countered those arrows, splitting them into two or three pieces with his own excellent shafts.

Then, Sudarśana, seeing his arrows destroyed by the force of Sātyaki's shafts, became intensely furious. With a sharp brilliance, as if intent on burning, he released arrows adorned with gold.

Then, with three fiery arrows, which were drawn up to the ear, keen, and well-feathered, he (Sudarśana) pierced (Sātyaki). Having penetrated his body armor, those arrows entered Sātyaki's body.

Thus, struck by him, the powerful grandson of Śini, whose valor was equal to Indra, quickly roared loudly after striking down the horses with Sudarśana's very sharp multitude of arrows.
