23.
Though this world considered him the son of a charioteer (sūtaputra) and also the son of Rādhā (Rādheya), he is indeed Kuntī's eldest son and our brother, born of our own mother.

24.
He was killed in battle by me, unknowingly and driven by greed for the kingdom. That act now consumes my limbs, just as fire consumes a pile of cotton.

25.
Indeed, not even Arjuna (Pārtha), the one with white horses (śvetavāhana), knows that brother. Neither do I, nor Bhīma, nor the twins (yamau). But that righteous one (suvrata) knows us.

26.
We have heard that Pṛthā indeed went to his presence. (She said): 'You desire peace for us, and you are my son!' Thus (she spoke).

27.
Pṛthā's wish was not fulfilled by that great-souled one (mahātman). 'This (was said) too late, Mother,' he uttered - thus we have heard.

28.
Indeed, I will not be able to abandon King Duryodhana in battle. It would certainly make me ignoble, cruel, and ungrateful.

29.
If I were to make a treaty with Yudhishthira, following your advice, people would think of me as one who is afraid of Arjuna (śvetavāha) in battle.

30.
Having conquered Arjuna (Vijaya) along with Krishna (Keśava) in battle, I shall then make peace with Yudhishthira (dharmaputra). And thus, he spoke.

31.
Pritha (Kunti) then spoke again to that broad-chested one, saying: 'Grant safety to the four (Pandavas, excluding Arjuna). Fight Arjuna (Phalguna) as you wish.'

32.
Trembling and with folded hands, the wise one said to his mother, 'I will not kill your four sons, who have approached me and are formidable.'

mayi hate (sati) vā sārjunāḥ
33.
Indeed, O Mother, you will certainly have five sons: either with Karna, if Arjuna is killed, or with Arjuna, if I am killed.

34.
Then, the mother, still longing for her sons, spoke further to her son: 'You should do good for those brothers for whom you desire well-being.'

35.
Having spoken thus to him, Pṛthā (Kunti) dismissed him and returned to her home. That hero, a brother born of the same womb (sahodara), was killed by his brother Arjuna.

36.
And indeed, that secret counsel (mantra) of Pṛthā or his was not revealed, O sage. Then that valiant great archer was slain by Arjuna (Pārtha).

37.
But I, O best of the twice-born (dvija), later came to know from Pṛthā's words, O lord, that Karṇa was my full brother, my elder brother.

aham karṇa-arjuna-sahāyaḥ api vāsavam jayeyam
aham karṇa-arjuna-sahāyaḥ api vāsavam jayeyam
38.
Therefore, my heart, of one who has slain his brother, aches intensely. If Karṇa and Arjuna had been my allies, I could have conquered even Indra (Vāsava).

39.
My anger, which suddenly arose while I was being tormented in the assembly by the wicked Dhārtarāṣṭras, subsides upon seeing Karṇa.

40.
Indeed, when I hear his harsh words, which have bitter consequences, spoken in the assembly by him who wishes well for Duryodhana during the game of dice...

41.
Then, indeed, my anger vanishes when I behold his feet. For my belief is that Karna's two feet are indeed similar to Kunti's.

42.
Indeed, as I search for the reason for the similarity between Pritha (Kunti) and you (Karna), I cannot find any explanation whatsoever, no matter how much I contemplate.

43.
How, then, did the earth swallow his chariot wheel in battle? And how was my brother cursed? You should reveal the truth about this matter here.

O revered one, I wish to hear from you everything just as it truly happened. For you, indeed, are omniscient and wise, and you know in this world what has been done and what remains undone.
