बृहदश्व उवाच ।
अथ तां व्युषितो रात्रिं नलो राजा स्वलंकृतः ।
वैदर्भ्या सहितः काल्यं ददर्श वसुधाधिपम् ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
atha tāṁ vyuṣito rātriṁ nalo rājā svalaṁkṛtaḥ ,
vaidarbhyā sahitaḥ kālyaṁ dadarśa vasudhādhipam.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: After that night had passed, King Nala, beautifully adorned and accompanied by Vaidarbhī, appeared before the ruler of the earth (King Bhīma) in the morning.
ततोऽभिवादयामास प्रयतः श्वशुरं नलः ।
तस्यानु दमयन्ती च ववन्दे पितरं शुभा ॥२॥
2. tato'bhivādayāmāsa prayataḥ śvaśuraṁ nalaḥ ,
tasyānu damayantī ca vavande pitaraṁ śubhā.
2. tataḥ abhivādayāmāsa prayataḥ śvaśuram nalaḥ
tasya anu damayantī ca vavande pitaram śubhā
2. Then, with reverence, Nala paid homage to his father-in-law. Following him, the auspicious Damayantī also bowed to her father.
तं भीमः प्रतिजग्राह पुत्रवत्परया मुदा ।
यथार्हं पूजयित्वा तु समाश्वासयत प्रभुः ।
नलेन सहितां तत्र दमयन्तीं पतिव्रताम् ॥३॥
3. taṁ bhīmaḥ pratijagrāha putravatparayā mudā ,
yathārhaṁ pūjayitvā tu samāśvāsayata prabhuḥ ,
nalena sahitāṁ tatra damayantīṁ pativratām.
3. tam bhīmaḥ pratijagrāha putravat
parayā mudā yathā arham pūjayitvā
tu samāśvāsayat prabhuḥ nalena
sahitām tatra damayantīm pativratām
3. King Bhīma received him (Nala) with immense joy, just like his own son. After honoring Nala appropriately, the king then consoled the devoted (pativratā) Damayantī, who was there with Nala.
तामर्हणां नलो राजा प्रतिगृह्य यथाविधि ।
परिचर्यां स्वकां तस्मै यथावत्प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥४॥
4. tāmarhaṇāṁ nalo rājā pratigṛhya yathāvidhi ,
paricaryāṁ svakāṁ tasmai yathāvatpratyavedayat.
4. tām arhaṇām nalaḥ rājā pratigṛhya yathā vidhi
paricaryām svakām tasmai yathāvat pratyavedayat
4. Having accepted that honor appropriately, King Nala then duly offered his service to him (King Bhīma).
ततो बभूव नगरे सुमहान्हर्षनिस्वनः ।
जनस्य संप्रहृष्टस्य नलं दृष्ट्वा तथागतम् ॥५॥
5. tato babhūva nagare sumahānharṣanisvanaḥ ,
janasya saṁprahṛṣṭasya nalaṁ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam.
5. tataḥ babhūva nagare sumahān harṣanisvanaḥ
janasya saṃprahr̥ṣṭasya nalam dr̥ṣṭvā tathāgatam
5. Then, a great sound of joy arose in the city among the exceedingly delighted people upon seeing Nala, who had returned.
अशोभयच्च नगरं पताकाध्वजमालिनम् ।
सिक्तसंमृष्टपुष्पाढ्या राजमार्गाः कृतास्तदा ॥६॥
6. aśobhayacca nagaraṁ patākādhvajamālinam ,
siktasaṁmṛṣṭapuṣpāḍhyā rājamārgāḥ kṛtāstadā.
6. aśobhayat ca nagaram patākādhvajamālinam
siktasaṃmr̥ṣṭapuṣpāḍhyāḥ rājamārgāḥ kr̥tāḥ tadā
6. And they decorated the city with garlands of banners and flags. At that time, the royal roads were made beautiful, abundant with sprinkled and swept flowers.
द्वारि द्वारि च पौराणां पुष्पभङ्गः प्रकल्पितः ।
अर्चितानि च सर्वाणि देवतायतनानि च ॥७॥
7. dvāri dvāri ca paurāṇāṁ puṣpabhaṅgaḥ prakalpitaḥ ,
arcitāni ca sarvāṇi devatāyatanāni ca.
7. dvāri dvāri ca paurāṇām puṣpabhaṅgaḥ prakalpitaḥ
arcitāni ca sarvāṇi devatāyatanāni ca
7. And at every door of the citizens, heaps of flowers were arranged. Furthermore, all the temples of the deities were worshipped.
ऋतुपर्णोऽपि शुश्राव बाहुकच्छद्मिनं नलम् ।
दमयन्त्या समायुक्तं जहृषे च नराधिपः ॥८॥
8. ṛtuparṇo'pi śuśrāva bāhukacchadminaṁ nalam ,
damayantyā samāyuktaṁ jahṛṣe ca narādhipaḥ.
8. r̥tuparṇaḥ api śuśrāva bāhukacchadminam nalam
damayantyā samāyuktam jahr̥ṣe ca narādhipaḥ
8. King Rituparna also heard that Nala, disguised as Bahuka, was reunited with Damayanti, and he rejoiced.
तमानाय्य नलो राजा क्षमयामास पार्थिवम् ।
स च तं क्षमयामास हेतुभिर्बुद्धिसंमतः ॥९॥
9. tamānāyya nalo rājā kṣamayāmāsa pārthivam ,
sa ca taṁ kṣamayāmāsa hetubhirbuddhisaṁmataḥ.
9. tam ānāyya nalaḥ rājā kṣamayāmāsa pārthivam
saḥ ca tam kṣamayāmāsa hetubhiḥ buddhi-saṃmataḥ
9. King Nala, having summoned him (Ṛtuparṇa), begged forgiveness from the king. And he (Ṛtuparṇa) in turn forgave Nala, offering reasons that were acceptable to his intellect.
स सत्कृतो महीपालो नैषधं विस्मयान्वितः ।
दिष्ट्या समेतो दारैः स्वैर्भवानित्यभ्यनन्दत ॥१०॥
10. sa satkṛto mahīpālo naiṣadhaṁ vismayānvitaḥ ,
diṣṭyā sameto dāraiḥ svairbhavānityabhyanandata.
10. saḥ satkṛtaḥ mahīpālaḥ naiṣadham vismayānvitaḥ
diṣṭyā sametaḥ dāraiḥ svaiḥ bhavān iti abhyanandata
10. That honored king (Ṛtuparṇa), filled with wonder, congratulated Nala, saying, 'Fortunately, you are reunited with your own family!'
कच्चित्तु नापराधं ते कृतवानस्मि नैषध ।
अज्ञातवासं वसतो मद्गृहे निषधाधिप ॥११॥
11. kaccittu nāparādhaṁ te kṛtavānasmi naiṣadha ,
ajñātavāsaṁ vasato madgṛhe niṣadhādhipa.
11. kaccit tu na aparādham te kṛtavān asmi naiṣadha
ajñātavāsam vasataḥ mat-gṛhe niṣadhādhipa
11. O Nala, Lord of Niṣadha, I hope I have not committed any offense against you while you were dwelling in disguise (ajñātavāsam) in my house?
यदि वा बुद्धिपूर्वाणि यद्यबुद्धानि कानिचित् ।
मया कृतान्यकार्याणि तानि मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. yadi vā buddhipūrvāṇi yadyabuddhāni kānicit ,
mayā kṛtānyakāryāṇi tāni me kṣantumarhasi.
12. yadi vā buddhi-pūrvāṇi yadi abuddhāni kānicit
mayā kṛtāni akāryāṇi tāni me kṣantum arhasi
12. Whether any improper acts were done by me knowingly or unknowingly, you ought to forgive me for them.
नल उवाच ।
न मेऽपराधं कृतवांस्त्वं स्वल्पमपि पार्थिव ।
कृतेऽपि च न मे कोपः क्षन्तव्यं हि मया तव ॥१३॥
13. nala uvāca ,
na me'parādhaṁ kṛtavāṁstvaṁ svalpamapi pārthiva ,
kṛte'pi ca na me kopaḥ kṣantavyaṁ hi mayā tava.
13. nala uvāca na me aparādham kṛtavān tvam svalpam api
pārthiva kṛte api ca na me kopaḥ kṣantavyam hi mayā tava
13. Nala said, "O King, you have not committed even a slight offense against me. Even if you had, I would not be angry, for it is indeed proper for me to forgive you."
पूर्वं ह्यसि सखा मेऽसि संबन्धी च नराधिप ।
अत ऊर्ध्वं तु भूयस्त्वं प्रीतिमाहर्तुमर्हसि ॥१४॥
14. pūrvaṁ hyasi sakhā me'si saṁbandhī ca narādhipa ,
ata ūrdhvaṁ tu bhūyastvaṁ prītimāhartumarhasi.
14. pūrvam hi asi sakhā me asi sambandhī ca narādhipa
| ataḥ ūrdhvam tu bhūyas tvam prītim āhartum arhasi
14. O King, you were my friend and kinsman before. Therefore, from this point onward, you should again foster affection (for me).
सर्वकामैः सुविहितः सुखमस्म्युषितस्त्वयि ।
न तथा स्वगृहे राजन्यथा तव गृहे सदा ॥१५॥
15. sarvakāmaiḥ suvihitaḥ sukhamasmyuṣitastvayi ,
na tathā svagṛhe rājanyathā tava gṛhe sadā.
15. sarvakāmaiḥ suvihitaḥ sukham asmi uṣitaḥ tvayi
| na tathā svagṛhe rājan yathā tava gṛhe sadā
15. Well-provided with all desires, I have lived happily with you. O King, I have never been as content in my own home as I always am in your house.
इदं चैव हयज्ञानं त्वदीयं मयि तिष्ठति ।
तदुपाकर्तुमिच्छामि मन्यसे यदि पार्थिव ॥१६॥
16. idaṁ caiva hayajñānaṁ tvadīyaṁ mayi tiṣṭhati ,
tadupākartumicchāmi manyase yadi pārthiva.
16. idam ca eva hayajñānam tvadīyam mayi tiṣṭhati
| tat upākartum icchāmi manyase yadi pārthiva
16. Moreover, this knowledge of horses, which is inherently yours, resides within me. I wish to impart that to you, O King, if you agree.
बृहदश्व उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ददौ विद्यामृतुपर्णाय नैषधः ।
स च तां प्रतिजग्राह विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥१७॥
17. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
evamuktvā dadau vidyāmṛtuparṇāya naiṣadhaḥ ,
sa ca tāṁ pratijagrāha vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā.
17. bṛhadaśva uvāca evam uktvā dadau vidyām ṛtuparṇāya
naiṣadhaḥ sa ca tām pratijagrāha vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā
17. Bṛhadaśva said: Having spoken thus, the king of Niṣadha gave the knowledge (vidyā) to Ṛtuparṇa. And he accepted that (knowledge) through an action (karma) performed according to established rules.
ततो गृह्याश्वहृदयं तदा भाङ्गस्वरिर्नृपः ।
सूतमन्यमुपादाय ययौ स्वपुरमेव हि ॥१८॥
18. tato gṛhyāśvahṛdayaṁ tadā bhāṅgasvarirnṛpaḥ ,
sūtamanyamupādāya yayau svapurameva hi.
18. tataḥ gṛhya aśvahṛdayam tadā bhāṅgasvariḥ
nṛpaḥ sūtam anyam upādāya yayau svapuram eva hi
18. Then, having received the knowledge of horses (aśvahṛdaya), that king, Bhāṅgasvari (Nala), taking another charioteer, indeed went back to his own city.
ऋतुपर्णे प्रतिगते नलो राजा विशां पते ।
नगरे कुण्डिने कालं नातिदीर्घमिवावसत् ॥१९॥
19. ṛtuparṇe pratigate nalo rājā viśāṁ pate ,
nagare kuṇḍine kālaṁ nātidīrghamivāvasat.
19. ṛtuparṇe pratigate nalaḥ rājā viśām pate
nagare kuṇḍine kālam na atidīrgham iva avasat
19. When Ṛtuparṇa had returned, King Nala, O lord of the people, resided in the city of Kuṇḍina for a period that was not very long, as it were.
