संजय उवाच ।
उदीर्यमाणं तद्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवानां महद्बलम् ।
अविषह्यं च मन्वानः कर्णं दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
udīryamāṇaṁ taddṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavānāṁ mahadbalam ,
aviṣahyaṁ ca manvānaḥ karṇaṁ duryodhano'bravīt.

1. Sañjaya said: Seeing that immense army of the Pāṇḍavas being arrayed, and considering it unbearable, Duryodhana spoke to Karṇa.
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो मित्राणां मित्रवत्सल ।
त्रायस्व समरे कर्ण सर्वान्योधान्महाबल ॥२॥
2. ayaṁ sa kālaḥ saṁprāpto mitrāṇāṁ mitravatsala ,
trāyasva samare karṇa sarvānyodhānmahābala.
2. ayam sa kālaḥ samprāptaḥ mitrāṇām mitravatsala
trāyasva samare karṇa sarvān yodhān mahābala
2. mitravatsala karṇa mahābala ayam sa kālaḥ

2. O Karṇa, you who are devoted to your friends, O mighty warrior, that very moment has arrived for your allies! Protect all our combatants in this battle!
पाञ्चालैर्मत्स्यकैकेयैः पाण्डवैश्च महारथैः ।
वृतान्समन्तात्संक्रुद्धैर्निःश्वसद्भिरिवोरगैः ॥३॥
3. pāñcālairmatsyakaikeyaiḥ pāṇḍavaiśca mahārathaiḥ ,
vṛtānsamantātsaṁkruddhairniḥśvasadbhirivoragaiḥ.
3. pāñcālaiḥ matsyakaikeyaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ ca mahārathaiḥ
vṛtān samantāt saṃkruddhaiḥ niḥśvasadbhiḥ iva uragaiḥ
3. pāñcālaiḥ matsyakaikeyaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ ca mahārathaiḥ
samantāt saṃkruddhaiḥ niḥśvasadbhiḥ iva uragaiḥ vṛtān
3. You (our warriors) are surrounded on all sides by the Pañcālas, Matsyas, Kekayas, and the Pāṇḍavas, who are great charioteers. They are intensely enraged, like hissing snakes.
एते नदन्ति संहृष्टाः पाण्डवा जितकाशिनः ।
शक्रोपमाश्च बहवः पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजाः ॥४॥
4. ete nadanti saṁhṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavā jitakāśinaḥ ,
śakropamāśca bahavaḥ pāñcālānāṁ rathavrajāḥ.
4. ete nadanti saṃhṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ jitakāśinaḥ
śakropamāḥ ca bahavaḥ pāñcālānām rathavrajāḥ

4. These Pāṇḍavas, jubilant and showing signs of victory, are shouting loudly. And there are also many chariot formations of the Pañcālas, who are like Indra (Śakra) in prowess.
कर्ण उवाच ।
परित्रातुमिह प्राप्तो यदि पार्थं पुरंदरः ।
तमप्याशु पराजित्य ततो हन्तास्मि पाण्डवम् ॥५॥
5. karṇa uvāca ,
paritrātumiha prāpto yadi pārthaṁ puraṁdaraḥ ,
tamapyāśu parājitya tato hantāsmi pāṇḍavam.

| tam api āśu parājitya tataḥ hantā asmi pāṇḍavam

5. Karna said: "If Indra himself has arrived here to protect Arjuna, then having quickly defeated even him, I will then kill the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna)."
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि समाश्वसिहि भारत ।
हन्तास्मि पाण्डुतनयान्पाञ्चालांश्च समागतान् ॥६॥
6. satyaṁ te pratijānāmi samāśvasihi bhārata ,
hantāsmi pāṇḍutanayānpāñcālāṁśca samāgatān.
6. satyam te pratijānāmi samāśvasihi bhārata |
hantā asmi pāṇḍu-tanayān pāñcālān ca samāgatān
6. bhārata,
te satyam pratijānāmi,
samāśvasihi samāgatān pāṇḍu-tanayān ca pāñcālān hantā asmi
6. O Bhārata, I truly promise you this: be reassured! I will kill the sons of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍavas) and the Pāñcālas who have assembled (against us).
जयं ते प्रतिजानामि वासवस्येव पावकिः ।
प्रियं तव मया कार्यमिति जीवामि पार्थिव ॥७॥
7. jayaṁ te pratijānāmi vāsavasyeva pāvakiḥ ,
priyaṁ tava mayā kāryamiti jīvāmi pārthiva.
7. jayam te pratijānāmi vāsavasya iva pāvakiḥ |
priyam tava mayā kāryam iti jīvāmi pārthiva
7. pārthiva,
te jayam pratijānāmi,
pāvakiḥ vāsavasya iva tava priyam mayā kāryam iti (aham) jīvāmi
7. O king, I promise you victory, just as Skanda (the son of Agni) promises victory to Indra. I live with the purpose that what is dear to you must be accomplished by me.
सर्वेषामेव पार्थानां फल्गुनो बलवत्तरः ।
तस्यामोघां विमोक्ष्यामि शक्तिं शक्रविनिर्मिताम् ॥८॥
8. sarveṣāmeva pārthānāṁ phalguno balavattaraḥ ,
tasyāmoghāṁ vimokṣyāmi śaktiṁ śakravinirmitām.
8. sarveṣām eva pārthānām phalgunaḥ balavattaraḥ |
tasya amoghām vimokṣyāmi śaktim śakra-vinirmitām
8. sarveṣām eva pārthānām phalgunaḥ balavattaraḥ
tasya śakra-vinirmitām amoghām śaktim vimokṣyāmi
8. Among all the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas), Arjuna is indeed the strongest. I will hurl his unfailing spear (śakti) that was fashioned by Indra.
तस्मिन्हते महेष्वासे भ्रातरस्तस्य मानद ।
तव वश्या भविष्यन्ति वनं यास्यन्ति वा पुनः ॥९॥
9. tasminhate maheṣvāse bhrātarastasya mānada ,
tava vaśyā bhaviṣyanti vanaṁ yāsyanti vā punaḥ.
9. tasmin hate maheṣvāse bhrātaraḥ tasya mānada
tava vaśyā bhaviṣyanti vanam yāsyanti vā punaḥ
9. mānada tasmin maheṣvāse hate tasya bhrātaraḥ
tava vaśyāḥ bhaviṣyanti vā punaḥ vanam yāsyanti
9. O giver of honor (mānada), once that great archer is killed, his brothers will either become subservient to you, or they will again retreat to the forest.
मयि जीवति कौरव्य विषादं मा कृथाः क्वचित् ।
अहं जेष्यामि समरे सहितान्सर्वपाण्डवान् ॥१०॥
10. mayi jīvati kauravya viṣādaṁ mā kṛthāḥ kvacit ,
ahaṁ jeṣyāmi samare sahitānsarvapāṇḍavān.
10. mayi jīvati kauravya viṣādam mā kṛthāḥ kvacit
aham jeṣyāmi samare sahitān sarvapāṇḍavān
10. kauravya mayi jīvati kvacit viṣādam mā kṛthāḥ
aham samare sahitān sarvapāṇḍavān jeṣyāmi
10. O scion of Kuru (kauravya), as long as I am alive, never give in to despair. I shall conquer all the Pandavas, along with their allies, in battle.
पाञ्चालान्केकयांश्चैव वृष्णींश्चापि समागतान् ।
बाणौघैः शकलीकृत्य तव दास्यामि मेदिनीम् ॥११॥
11. pāñcālānkekayāṁścaiva vṛṣṇīṁścāpi samāgatān ,
bāṇaughaiḥ śakalīkṛtya tava dāsyāmi medinīm.
11. pāñcālān kekayān ca eva vṛṣṇīn ca api samāgatān
bāṇaughaiḥ śakalīkṛtya tava dāsyāmi medinīm
11. pāñcālān kekayān ca eva vṛṣṇīn ca api samāgatān
bāṇaughaiḥ śakalīkṛtya tava medinīm dāsyāmi
11. I will shred the assembled Pañcālas, Kekayas, and Vṛṣṇis with torrents of arrows, and then I will give the earth to you.
संजय उवाच ।
एवं ब्रुवाणं कर्णं तु कृपः शारद्वतोऽब्रवीत् ।
स्मयन्निव महाबाहुः सूतपुत्रमिदं वचः ॥१२॥
12. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ karṇaṁ tu kṛpaḥ śāradvato'bravīt ,
smayanniva mahābāhuḥ sūtaputramidaṁ vacaḥ.
12. sañjaya uvāca evam bruvāṇam karṇam tu kṛpaḥ śāradvataḥ
abravīt smayan iva mahābāhuḥ sūtaputram idam vacaḥ
12. sañjaya uvāca tu evam bruvāṇam karṇam śāradvataḥ
mahābāhuḥ kṛpaḥ smayan iva idam vacaḥ sūtaputram abravīt
12. Sañjaya said: But the mighty-armed Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvat, as if smiling, spoke these words to Karṇa, the son of Sūta (sūtaputra), who was speaking in this manner.
शोभनं शोभनं कर्ण सनाथः कुरुपुंगवः ।
त्वया नाथेन राधेय वचसा यदि सिध्यति ॥१३॥
13. śobhanaṁ śobhanaṁ karṇa sanāthaḥ kurupuṁgavaḥ ,
tvayā nāthena rādheya vacasā yadi sidhyati.
13. śobhanam śobhanam karṇa sanāthaḥ kurupuṅgavaḥ
tvayā nāthena rādheya vacasā yadi sidhyati
13. karṇa rādheya tvayā nāthena kurupuṅgavaḥ
sanāthaḥ śobhanam śobhanam yadi vacasā sidhyati
13. Excellent, excellent, Karna! The foremost among the Kurus truly has a protector in you, O son of Radha, if success can be achieved by mere words.
बहुशः कत्थसे कर्ण कौरव्यस्य समीपतः ।
न तु ते विक्रमः कश्चिद्दृश्यते बलमेव वा ॥१४॥
14. bahuśaḥ katthase karṇa kauravyasya samīpataḥ ,
na tu te vikramaḥ kaściddṛśyate balameva vā.
14. bahuśaḥ katthase karṇa kauravyasya samīpataḥ
na tu te vikramaḥ kaścit dṛśyate balam eva vā
14. karṇa tvam bahuśaḥ kauravyasya samīpataḥ katthase
te kaścit vikramaḥ balam eva vā na tu dṛśyate
14. Many times you boast, Karna, in the presence of the Kaurava (Duryodhana); yet, no valor or strength of yours is ever seen.
समागमः पाण्डुसुतैर्दृष्टस्ते बहुशो युधि ।
सर्वत्र निर्जितश्चासि पाण्डवैः सूतनन्दन ॥१५॥
15. samāgamaḥ pāṇḍusutairdṛṣṭaste bahuśo yudhi ,
sarvatra nirjitaścāsi pāṇḍavaiḥ sūtanandana.
15. samāgamaḥ pāṇḍusutaiḥ dṛṣṭaḥ te bahuśaḥ yudhi
sarvatra nirjitaḥ ca asi pāṇḍavaiḥ sūtanandana
15. sūtanandana te pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha samāgamaḥ yudhi
bahuśaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ ca tvam sarvatra pāṇḍavaiḥ nirjitaḥ asi
15. Your encounters with the sons of Pandu have been witnessed many times in battle; and, O son of Suta, you have been defeated everywhere by the Pandavas.
ह्रियमाणे तदा कर्ण गन्धर्वैर्धृतराष्ट्रजे ।
तदायुध्यन्त सैन्यानि त्वमेकस्तु पलायथाः ॥१६॥
16. hriyamāṇe tadā karṇa gandharvairdhṛtarāṣṭraje ,
tadāyudhyanta sainyāni tvamekastu palāyathāḥ.
16. hriyamāṇe tadā karṇa gandharvaiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraje
tadā ayudhyanta sainyāni tvam ekaḥ tu palāyathāḥ
16. karṇa tadā gandharvaiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraje hriyamāṇe
sati sainyāni ayudhyanta tu tvam ekaḥ palāyathāḥ
16. O Karna, when Dhritarashtra's son was being carried off by the Gandharvas, the armies fought, but you alone fled.
विराटनगरे चापि समेताः सर्वकौरवाः ।
पार्थेन निर्जिता युद्धे त्वं च कर्ण सहानुजः ॥१७॥
17. virāṭanagare cāpi sametāḥ sarvakauravāḥ ,
pārthena nirjitā yuddhe tvaṁ ca karṇa sahānujaḥ.
17. virāṭanagare ca api sametāḥ sarvakauravāḥ
pārthena nirjitāḥ yuddhe tvaṃ ca karṇa sahānujaḥ
17. karṇa tvaṃ ca sahānujaḥ sarvakauravāḥ ca api
virāṭanagare sametāḥ yuddhe pārthena nirjitāḥ
17. Even in the city of Virata, when all the Kauravas were assembled, you, Karna, along with your younger brother, were defeated in battle by Arjuna (Pārtha).
एकस्याप्यसमर्थस्त्वं फल्गुनस्य रणाजिरे ।
कथमुत्सहसे जेतुं सकृष्णान्सर्वपाण्डवान् ॥१८॥
18. ekasyāpyasamarthastvaṁ phalgunasya raṇājire ,
kathamutsahase jetuṁ sakṛṣṇānsarvapāṇḍavān.
18. ekasya api asamarthaḥ tvaṃ phalgunasya raṇājire
kathaṃ utsahase jetuṃ sakṛṣṇān sarvapāṇḍavān
18. raṇājire ekasya phalgunasya api tvaṃ asamarthaḥ,
kathaṃ sakṛṣṇān sarvapāṇḍavān jetuṃ utsahase?
18. Even against one Arjuna (Phalguna) on the battlefield, you were incapable. How then do you dare to conquer all the Pandavas, who are with Krishna?
अब्रुवन्कर्ण युध्यस्व बहु कत्थसि सूतज ।
अनुक्त्वा विक्रमेद्यस्तु तद्वै सत्पुरुषव्रतम् ॥१९॥
19. abruvankarṇa yudhyasva bahu katthasi sūtaja ,
anuktvā vikramedyastu tadvai satpuruṣavratam.
19. abruvan karṇa yudhyasva bahu katthasi sūataja
anuktvā vikramet yaḥ tu tat vai satpuruṣavratam
19. karṇa sūataja,
abruvan,
"bahu katthasi,
yudhyasva! yaḥ tu anuktvā vikramet,
tat vai satpuruṣavratam.
"
19. They said, "O Karna, fight! You boast too much, O son of a charioteer. Indeed, the vow (vrata) of a good person is to display valor without proclaiming it first."
गर्जित्वा सूतपुत्र त्वं शारदाभ्रमिवाजलम् ।
निष्फलो दृश्यसे कर्ण तच्च राजा न बुध्यते ॥२०॥
20. garjitvā sūtaputra tvaṁ śāradābhramivājalam ,
niṣphalo dṛśyase karṇa tacca rājā na budhyate.
20. garjitvā sūtaputra tvaṃ śāradābhram iva ajalam
niṣphalaḥ dṛśyase karṇa tat ca rājā na budhyate
20. sūtaputra karṇa,
tvaṃ ajalam śāradābhram iva garjitvā niṣphalaḥ dṛśyase.
ca rājā tat na budhyate.
20. O son of a charioteer, Karna, you are seen as fruitless, like a waterless autumn cloud that has only thundered. And the king does not realize this.
तावद्गर्जसि राधेय यावत्पार्थं न पश्यसि ।
पुरा पार्थं हि ते दृष्ट्वा दुर्लभं गर्जितं भवेत् ॥२१॥
21. tāvadgarjasi rādheya yāvatpārthaṁ na paśyasi ,
purā pārthaṁ hi te dṛṣṭvā durlabhaṁ garjitaṁ bhavet.
21. tāvat garjasi rādheya yāvat pārtham na paśyasi purā
pārtham hi te dṛṣṭvā durlabham garjitam bhavet
21. rādheya tvam tāvat garjasi yāvat pārtham na paśyasi
hi purā pārtham dṛṣṭvā te garjitam durlabham bhavet
21. O son of Rādhā, you boast only as long as you do not see Pārtha (Arjuna). Indeed, once you have seen Pārtha, such boasting will become difficult for you.
त्वमनासाद्य तान्बाणान्फल्गुनस्य विगर्जसि ।
पार्थसायकविद्धस्य दुर्लभं गर्जितं भवेत् ॥२२॥
22. tvamanāsādya tānbāṇānphalgunasya vigarjasi ,
pārthasāyakaviddhasya durlabhaṁ garjitaṁ bhavet.
22. tvam anāsādya tān bāṇān phalgunasya vigarjasi
pārthasāyakaviddhasya durlabham garjitam bhavet
22. tvam phalgunasya tān bāṇān anāsādya vigarjasi
pārthasāyakaviddhasya garjitam durlabham bhavet
22. You boast without having encountered those arrows of Phalguna (Arjuna). For one who has been pierced by Pārtha's (Arjuna's) arrows, boasting would be impossible.
बाहुभिः क्षत्रियाः शूरा वाग्भिः शूरा द्विजातयः ।
धनुषा फल्गुनः शूरः कर्णः शूरो मनोरथैः ॥२३॥
23. bāhubhiḥ kṣatriyāḥ śūrā vāgbhiḥ śūrā dvijātayaḥ ,
dhanuṣā phalgunaḥ śūraḥ karṇaḥ śūro manorathaiḥ.
23. bāhubhiḥ kṣatriyāḥ śūrāḥ vāgbhiḥ śūrāḥ dvijātayaḥ
dhanuṣā phalgunaḥ śūraḥ karṇaḥ śūraḥ manorathaiḥ
23. kṣatriyāḥ bāhubhiḥ śūrāḥ dvijātayaḥ vāgbhiḥ śūrāḥ
phalgunaḥ dhanuṣā śūraḥ karṇaḥ manorathaiḥ śūraḥ
23. Warriors (kṣatriyāḥ) are brave with their arms; the twice-born (dvijātayaḥ) are brave with their words. Phalguna (Arjuna) is brave with his bow; Karṇa is brave only with his desires (manorathaiḥ).
एवं परुषितस्तेन तदा शारद्वतेन सः ।
कर्णः प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठः कृपं वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ paruṣitastena tadā śāradvatena saḥ ,
karṇaḥ praharatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ kṛpaṁ vākyamathābravīt.
24. evam paruṣitaḥ tena tadā śāradvatena saḥ karṇaḥ
praharatām śreṣṭhaḥ kṛpam vākyam atha abravīt
24. saḥ karṇaḥ praharatām śreṣṭhaḥ evam śāradvatena
tena paruṣitaḥ tadā atha kṛpam vākyam abravīt
24. Thus harshly addressed by Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvan, at that moment, Karṇa, who was considered the foremost among strikers, then spoke these words to Kṛpa.
शूरा गर्जन्ति सततं प्रावृषीव बलाहकाः ।
फलं चाशु प्रयच्छन्ति बीजमुप्तमृताविव ॥२५॥
25. śūrā garjanti satataṁ prāvṛṣīva balāhakāḥ ,
phalaṁ cāśu prayacchanti bījamuptamṛtāviva.
25. śūrāḥ garjanti satatam prāvṛṣi iva balāhakāḥ
phalam ca āśu prayacchanti bījam uptam ṛtau iva
25. śūrāḥ satatam garjanti prāvṛṣi balāhakāḥ iva ca
ṛtau uptam bījam iva āśu phalam prayacchanti
25. Heroes constantly roar like clouds during the rainy season. And just as a seed sown in the right season quickly yields fruit, so too do they swiftly bring forth results.
दोषमत्र न पश्यामि शूराणां रणमूर्धनि ।
तत्तद्विकत्थमानानां भारं चोद्वहतां मृधे ॥२६॥
26. doṣamatra na paśyāmi śūrāṇāṁ raṇamūrdhani ,
tattadvikatthamānānāṁ bhāraṁ codvahatāṁ mṛdhe.
26. doṣam atra na paśyāmi śūrāṇām raṇa-mūrdhani
tat-tat vikatthamānānām bhāram ca udvahatām mṛdhe
26. atra raṇa-mūrdhani tat-tat vikatthamānānām ca
mṛdhe bhāram udvahatām śūrāṇām doṣam na paśyāmi
26. I see no fault in heroes who, at the forefront of battle, boast various things and carry the burden of combat.
यं भारं पुरुषो वोढुं मनसा हि व्यवस्यति ।
दैवमस्य ध्रुवं तत्र साहाय्यायोपपद्यते ॥२७॥
27. yaṁ bhāraṁ puruṣo voḍhuṁ manasā hi vyavasyati ,
daivamasya dhruvaṁ tatra sāhāyyāyopapadyate.
27. yam bhāram puruṣaḥ voḍhum manasā hi vyavasyati
daivam asya dhruvam tatra sāhāyyāya upapadyate
27. hi yam bhāram puruṣaḥ manasā voḍhum vyavasyati,
dhruvam tatra asya daivam sāhāyyāya upapadyate
27. Indeed, whatever burden a person (puruṣa) resolves to carry with his mind, divine power (daiva) certainly comes there to his aid.
व्यवसायद्वितीयोऽहं मनसा भारमुद्वहन् ।
गर्जामि यद्यहं विप्र तव किं तत्र नश्यति ॥२८॥
28. vyavasāyadvitīyo'haṁ manasā bhāramudvahan ,
garjāmi yadyahaṁ vipra tava kiṁ tatra naśyati.
28. vyavasāya-dvitīyaḥ aham manasā bhāram udvahan
garjāmi yadi aham vipra tava kim tatra naśyati
28. vyavasāya-dvitīyaḥ aham manasā bhāram udvahan yadi aham garjāmi,
vipra,
tatra tava kim naśyati?
28. I, whose constant companion is resolution, carrying this burden with my mind – if I, O Brahmin, make such pronouncements, what indeed do you lose by it?
वृथा शूरा न गर्जन्ति सजला इव तोयदाः ।
सामर्थ्यमात्मनो ज्ञात्वा ततो गर्जन्ति पण्डिताः ॥२९॥
29. vṛthā śūrā na garjanti sajalā iva toyadāḥ ,
sāmarthyamātmano jñātvā tato garjanti paṇḍitāḥ.
29. vṛthā śūrāḥ na garjanti sajalāḥ iva toyadāḥ
sāmarthyam ātmanaḥ jñātvā tataḥ garjanti paṇḍitāḥ
29. sajalāḥ toyadāḥ iva vṛthā na garjanti śūrāḥ vṛthā na
garjanti ātmanaḥ sāmarthyam jñātvā tataḥ paṇḍitāḥ garjanti
29. True heroes do not boast uselessly, just as clouds full of water do not roar without bringing rain. Only after understanding their own capacity (ātman), do the wise make pronouncements.
सोऽहमद्य रणे यत्तः सहितौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ।
उत्सहे तरसा जेतुं ततो गर्जामि गौतम ॥३०॥
30. so'hamadya raṇe yattaḥ sahitau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ,
utsahe tarasā jetuṁ tato garjāmi gautama.

30. Today, I (who am) resolute in battle alongside Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, am confident that I can conquer them with my might. Therefore, O Gautama, I roar with confidence.
पश्य त्वं गर्जितस्यास्य फलं मे विप्र सानुगः ।
हत्वा पाण्डुसुतानाजौ सहकृष्णान्ससात्वतान् ।
दुर्योधनाय दास्यामि पृथिवीं हतकण्टकाम् ॥३१॥
31. paśya tvaṁ garjitasyāsya phalaṁ me vipra sānugaḥ ,
hatvā pāṇḍusutānājau sahakṛṣṇānsasātvatān ,
duryodhanāya dāsyāmi pṛthivīṁ hatakaṇṭakām.

31. O Brahmin, behold the result of this boast of mine! As I, accompanied by my followers, will kill the sons of Pāṇḍu along with Kṛṣṇa and the Sātvatas in battle, and then I will give this earth, free from enemies, to Duryodhana.
कृप उवाच ।
मनोरथप्रलापो मे न ग्राह्यस्तव सूतज ।
यदा क्षिपसि वै कृष्णौ धर्मराजं च पाण्डवम् ॥३२॥
32. kṛpa uvāca ,
manorathapralāpo me na grāhyastava sūtaja ,
yadā kṣipasi vai kṛṣṇau dharmarājaṁ ca pāṇḍavam.

32. Kṛpa said: "O son of a charioteer, your boasts, born of mere desire, are not acceptable to me! Especially when you disrespect both Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna (Kṛṣṇau), as well as King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarāja) and Arjuna (Pāṇḍava) himself."
ध्रुवस्तत्र जयः कर्ण यत्र युद्धविशारदौ ।
देवगन्धर्वयक्षाणां मनुष्योरगरक्षसाम् ।
दंशितानामपि रणे अजेयौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ॥३३॥
33. dhruvastatra jayaḥ karṇa yatra yuddhaviśāradau ,
devagandharvayakṣāṇāṁ manuṣyoragarakṣasām ,

33. O Karṇa, certain is victory where the two experts in warfare, Krishna and Arjuna (Pāṇḍava), are present. They are unconquerable in battle, even by gods, gandharvas, yakshas, humans, serpents (uraga), or rakshasas, even when armored.
ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवाग्दान्तो गुरुदैवतपूजकः ।
नित्यं धर्मरतश्चैव कृतास्त्रश्च विशेषतः ।
धृतिमांश्च कृतज्ञश्च धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥३४॥
34. brahmaṇyaḥ satyavāgdānto gurudaivatapūjakaḥ ,
nityaṁ dharmarataścaiva kṛtāstraśca viśeṣataḥ ,
dhṛtimāṁśca kṛtajñaśca dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

34. Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of `dharma` (natural law), is devoted to sacred knowledge, truthful in speech, self-controlled, a worshipper of gurus and deities, and always dedicated to `dharma` (natural law). He is also especially skilled in weapons, firm in resolve, and grateful.
भ्रातरश्चास्य बलिनः सर्वास्त्रेषु कृतश्रमाः ।
गुरुवृत्तिरताः प्राज्ञा धर्मनित्या यशस्विनः ॥३५॥
35. bhrātaraścāsya balinaḥ sarvāstreṣu kṛtaśramāḥ ,
guruvṛttiratāḥ prājñā dharmanityā yaśasvinaḥ.

35. And his mighty brothers are skilled in all weapons. They are devoted to the conduct of their gurus, wise, always dedicated to `dharma` (natural law), and glorious.
संबन्धिनश्चेन्द्रवीर्याः स्वनुरक्ताः प्रहारिणः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च दौर्मुखिर्जनमेजयः ॥३६॥
36. saṁbandhinaścendravīryāḥ svanuraktāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca daurmukhirjanamejayaḥ.

36. And his allies, mighty like Indra, are deeply devoted to him and fierce warriors. Among them are Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, Daurmukhi, and Janamejaya.
चन्द्रसेनो भद्रसेनः कीर्तिधर्मा ध्रुवो धरः ।
वसुचन्द्रो दामचन्द्रः सिंहचन्द्रः सुवेधनः ॥३७॥
37. candraseno bhadrasenaḥ kīrtidharmā dhruvo dharaḥ ,
vasucandro dāmacandraḥ siṁhacandraḥ suvedhanaḥ.

37. Candra-sena, Bhadra-sena, Kīrti-dharma (whose intrinsic nature is fame), Dhruva, Dhara, Vasu-candra, Dāma-candra, Siṃha-candra, and Suvedhana.
द्रुपदस्य तथा पुत्रा द्रुपदश्च महास्त्रवित् ।
येषामर्थाय संयत्तो मत्स्यराजः सहानुगः ॥३८॥
38. drupadasya tathā putrā drupadaśca mahāstravit ,
yeṣāmarthāya saṁyatto matsyarājaḥ sahānugaḥ.

38. And the sons of Drupada, along with Drupada himself, who is a great master of weapons. For their sake, the King of Matsyas, accompanied by his followers, stands prepared.

बलानीको जयानीको जयाश्वो रथवाहनः ॥३९॥
39. śatānīkaḥ sudaśanaḥ śrutānīkaḥ śrutadhvajaḥ ,

चन्द्रोदयः कामरथो विराटभ्रातरः शुभाः ।
यमौ च द्रौपदेयाश्च राक्षसश्च घटोत्कचः ।
येषामर्थाय युध्यन्ते न तेषां विद्यते क्षयः ॥४०॥
40. candrodayaḥ kāmaratho virāṭabhrātaraḥ śubhāḥ ,
yamau ca draupadeyāśca rākṣasaśca ghaṭotkacaḥ ,
yeṣāmarthāya yudhyante na teṣāṁ vidyate kṣayaḥ.

40. Candrodaya, Kāmaratha, and the virtuous brothers of Virāṭa; also the twins (sons of Nakula and Sahadeva), the sons of Draupadī, and the rākṣasa Ghaṭotkaca. For the sake of those for whom they fight, there is no destruction for them.
कामं खलु जगत्सर्वं सदेवासुरमानवम् ।
सयक्षराक्षसगणं सभूतभुजगद्विपम् ।
निःशेषमस्त्रवीर्येण कुर्यातां भीमफल्गुनौ ॥४१॥
41. kāmaṁ khalu jagatsarvaṁ sadevāsuramānavam ,
sayakṣarākṣasagaṇaṁ sabhūtabhujagadvipam ,
niḥśeṣamastravīryeṇa kuryātāṁ bhīmaphalgunau.

41. Indeed, Bhīma and Arjuna, with the power of their weapons, could utterly destroy the entire world, including its gods, asuras, humans, hosts of yakṣas and rākṣasas, bhūtas, serpents, and elephants.
युधिष्ठिरश्च पृथिवीं निर्दहेद्घोरचक्षुषा ।
अप्रमेयबलः शौरिर्येषामर्थे च दंशितः ।
कथं तान्संयुगे कर्ण जेतुमुत्सहसे परान् ॥४२॥
42. yudhiṣṭhiraśca pṛthivīṁ nirdahedghoracakṣuṣā ,
aprameyabalaḥ śauriryeṣāmarthe ca daṁśitaḥ ,
kathaṁ tānsaṁyuge karṇa jetumutsahase parān.

ghoracakṣuṣā aprameyabalaḥ śauriḥ
yeṣām arthe ca daṃśitaḥ katham tān

42. And Yudhiṣṭhira would burn the entire earth with his dreadful gaze. Furthermore, Śauri (Kṛṣṇa), whose strength is immeasurable, is fully armed for their sake. Karna, how then do you dare to conquer those enemies in battle?
महानपनयस्त्वेष तव नित्यं हि सूतज ।
यस्त्वमुत्सहसे योद्धुं समरे शौरिणा सह ॥४३॥
43. mahānapanayastveṣa tava nityaṁ hi sūtaja ,
yastvamutsahase yoddhuṁ samare śauriṇā saha.
43. mahān apanayaḥ tu eṣaḥ tava nityam hi sūtaja
yaḥ tvam utsahase yoddhum samare śauriṇā saha
43. sūtaja eṣaḥ tava mahān nityam hi apanayaḥ
yaḥ tvam samare śauriṇā saha yoddhum utsahase
43. O son of a sūta, this is indeed a great and constant transgression (apanaya) on your part, that you dare to fight with Śauri (Kṛṣṇa) in battle.
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु राधेयः प्रहसन्भरतर्षभ ।
अब्रवीच्च तदा कर्णो गुरुं शारद्वतं कृपम् ॥४४॥
44. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktastu rādheyaḥ prahasanbharatarṣabha ,
abravīcca tadā karṇo guruṁ śāradvataṁ kṛpam.
44. saṃjayaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ tu rādheyaḥ prahasan
bharatarṣabha abravīt ca tadā karṇaḥ gurum śāradvatam kṛpam

44. Sañjaya said: O foremost of the Bharatas (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), Rādhā's son (Rādheya) Karna, thus addressed, then spoke to his teacher (guru), Kṛpa, the son of Śāradvat, while smiling.
सत्यमुक्तं त्वया ब्रह्मन्पाण्डवान्प्रति यद्वचः ।
एते चान्ये च बहवो गुणाः पाण्डुसुतेषु वै ॥४५॥
45. satyamuktaṁ tvayā brahmanpāṇḍavānprati yadvacaḥ ,
ete cānye ca bahavo guṇāḥ pāṇḍusuteṣu vai.
45. satyam uktam tvayā brahman pāṇḍavān prati yat vacaḥ
| ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ guṇāḥ pāṇḍusuteṣu vai
45. brahman tvayā pāṇḍavān prati yat vacaḥ satyam
uktam ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ guṇāḥ pāṇḍusuteṣu vai
45. O Brahmin, what you have spoken concerning the Pāṇḍavas is indeed true. These and many other qualities exist among the sons of Pāṇḍu.
अजय्याश्च रणे पार्था देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
सदैत्ययक्षगन्धर्वपिशाचोरगराक्षसैः ।
तथापि पार्थाञ्जेष्यामि शक्त्या वासवदत्तया ॥४६॥
46. ajayyāśca raṇe pārthā devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
sadaityayakṣagandharvapiśācoragarākṣasaiḥ ,
tathāpi pārthāñjeṣyāmi śaktyā vāsavadattayā.
46. ajayyāḥ ca raṇe pārthāḥ devaiḥ api
sa vāsavaiḥ |
sadaityayakṣagandharvapiśācoragarākṣasaiḥ | tathā api
pārthān jeṣyāmi śaktyā vāsavadattayā

ajayyāḥ tathā api
śaktyā vāsavadattayā pārthān jeṣyāmi
46. And the Pāṇḍavas are invincible in battle, even by the gods including Indra, or by daityas, yakṣas, gandharvas, piśācas, uragas, and rākṣasas. Nevertheless, I shall conquer the Pāṇḍavas with the power (śakti) given by Indra.
ममाप्यमोघा दत्तेयं शक्तिः शक्रेण वै द्विज ।
एतया निहनिष्यामि सव्यसाचिनमाहवे ॥४७॥
47. mamāpyamoghā datteyaṁ śaktiḥ śakreṇa vai dvija ,
etayā nihaniṣyāmi savyasācinamāhave.
47. mama api amoghā dattā iyam śaktiḥ śakreṇa vai
dvija | etayā nihaniṣyāmi savyasācinam āhave
47. dvija mama api iyam amoghā śaktiḥ śakreṇa

47. O twice-born one (dvija), this unfailing divine power (śakti) has also been given to me by Indra. With this (śakti), I shall slay Savyasācin (Arjuna) in battle.
हते तु पाण्डवे कृष्णो भ्रातरश्चास्य सोदराः ।
अनर्जुना न शक्ष्यन्ति महीं भोक्तुं कथंचन ॥४८॥
48. hate tu pāṇḍave kṛṣṇo bhrātaraścāsya sodarāḥ ,
anarjunā na śakṣyanti mahīṁ bhoktuṁ kathaṁcana.
48. hate tu pāṇḍave kṛṣṇaḥ bhrātaraḥ ca asya sodarāḥ
| anarjunāḥ na śakṣyanti mahīm bhoktum kathaṃcana
48. tu pāṇḍave hate asya sodarāḥ bhrātaraḥ ca kṛṣṇaḥ
anarjunāḥ mahīm bhoktum kathaṃcana na śakṣyanti
48. But when the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) is slain, Kṛṣṇa and his uterine brothers, without Arjuna, will not be able to enjoy the earth in any way.
तेषु नष्टेषु सर्वेषु पृथिवीयं ससागरा ।
अयत्नात्कौरवेयस्य वशे स्थास्यति गौतम ॥४९॥
49. teṣu naṣṭeṣu sarveṣu pṛthivīyaṁ sasāgarā ,
ayatnātkauraveyasya vaśe sthāsyati gautama.
49. teṣu naṣṭeṣu sarveṣu pṛthivī iyam sa-sāgarā
ayatnāt kauraveyasya vaśe sthāsyati gautama
49. gautama teṣu sarveṣu naṣṭeṣu iyam sa-sāgarā

49. O Gautama, once all of them are destroyed, this earth, along with its oceans, will effortlessly come under the control of the son of Kuru (Duryodhana).
सुनीतैरिह सर्वार्थाः सिध्यन्ते नात्र संशयः ।
एतमर्थमहं ज्ञात्वा ततो गर्जामि गौतम ॥५०॥
50. sunītairiha sarvārthāḥ sidhyante nātra saṁśayaḥ ,
etamarthamahaṁ jñātvā tato garjāmi gautama.
50. sunītaiḥ iha sarva-arthāḥ sidhyante na atra saṃśayaḥ
etam artham aham jñātvā tataḥ garjāmi gautama
50. gautama iha sunītaiḥ sarva-arthāḥ sidhyante atra
saṃśayaḥ na aham etam artham jñātvā tataḥ garjāmi
50. O Gautama, there is no doubt that all objectives are achieved here through sound policies. Knowing this truth, I declare it with conviction.
त्वं तु वृद्धश्च विप्रश्च अशक्तश्चापि संयुगे ।
कृतस्नेहश्च पार्थेषु मोहान्मामवमन्यसे ॥५१॥
51. tvaṁ tu vṛddhaśca vipraśca aśaktaścāpi saṁyuge ,
kṛtasnehaśca pārtheṣu mohānmāmavamanyase.
51. tvam tu vṛddhaḥ ca vipraḥ ca aśaktaḥ ca api saṃyuge
kṛta-snehaḥ ca pārtheṣu mohāt mām avamanyase
51. tvam tu vṛddhaḥ ca vipraḥ ca api saṃyuge aśaktaḥ
ca pārtheṣu kṛta-snehaḥ ca mohāt mām avamanyase
51. But you are old, a Brahmin, and indeed powerless in battle. Furthermore, you have developed affection for the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas). Therefore, out of delusion, you disrespect me.
यद्येवं वक्ष्यसे भूयो मामप्रियमिह द्विज ।
ततस्ते खड्गमुद्यम्य जिह्वां छेत्स्यामि दुर्मते ॥५२॥
52. yadyevaṁ vakṣyase bhūyo māmapriyamiha dvija ,
tataste khaḍgamudyamya jihvāṁ chetsyāmi durmate.
52. yadi evam vakṣyase bhūyaḥ mām apriyam iha dvija
tataḥ te khaḍgam udyamya jihvām chetsyāmi durmate
52. dvija yadi iha mām apriyam evam bhūyaḥ vakṣyase

52. O twice-born (dvija), if you speak such unpleasant words to me again, then, O evil-minded one, raising my sword, I will cut off your tongue.
यच्चापि पाण्डवान्विप्र स्तोतुमिच्छसि संयुगे ।
भीषयन्सर्वसैन्यानि कौरवेयाणि दुर्मते ।
अत्रापि शृणु मे वाक्यं यथावद्गदतो द्विज ॥५३॥
53. yaccāpi pāṇḍavānvipra stotumicchasi saṁyuge ,
bhīṣayansarvasainyāni kauraveyāṇi durmate ,
atrāpi śṛṇu me vākyaṁ yathāvadgadato dvija.
53. yat ca api pāṇḍavān vipra stotum
icchasi saṃyuge bhīṣayan sarva sainyāni
kauraveyāṇi durmate atra api
śṛṇu me vākyam yathāvat gadataḥ dvija
53. vipra durmate dvija yat ca api
saṃyuge pāṇḍavān stotum icchasi sarva
kauraveyāṇi sainyāni bhīṣayan atra
api yathāvat gadataḥ me vākyam śṛṇu
53. And also, O Brahmin (vipra), O evil-minded one, since you wish to praise the Pāṇḍavas in battle, thereby frightening all the Kaurava armies, listen to my words here, O twice-born (dvija), as I speak them correctly.
दुर्योधनश्च द्रोणश्च शकुनिर्दुर्मुखो जयः ।
दुःशासनो वृषसेनो मद्रराजस्त्वमेव च ।
सोमदत्तश्च भूरिश्च तथा द्रौणिर्विविंशतिः ॥५४॥
54. duryodhanaśca droṇaśca śakunirdurmukho jayaḥ ,
duḥśāsano vṛṣaseno madrarājastvameva ca ,
somadattaśca bhūriśca tathā drauṇirviviṁśatiḥ.
54. duryodhanaḥ ca droṇaḥ ca śakuniḥ
durmukhaḥ jayaḥ duḥśāsanaḥ vṛṣasenaḥ
madrarājaḥ tvam eva ca somadattaḥ ca
bhūriḥ ca tathā drauṇiḥ viviṃśatiḥ
54. duryodhanaḥ ca droṇaḥ ca śakuniḥ
durmukhaḥ jayaḥ duḥśāsanaḥ vṛṣasenaḥ
madrarājaḥ tvam eva ca somadattaḥ ca
bhūriḥ ca tathā drauṇiḥ viviṃśatiḥ
54. There are Duryodhana, and Droṇa, and Śakuni, Durmukha, Jaya, Duḥśāsana, Vṛṣasena, the king of Madras (Madrarāja), and you yourself; and Somadatta, and Bhūriśravas (Bhūri), and also Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), and Viviṃśati.
तिष्ठेयुर्दंशिता यत्र सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ।
जयेदेतान्रणे को नु शक्रतुल्यबलोऽप्यरिः ॥५५॥
55. tiṣṭheyurdaṁśitā yatra sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ ,
jayedetānraṇe ko nu śakratulyabalo'pyariḥ.

jayet etān raṇe kaḥ nu śakratulyabalaḥ api ariḥ

55. Where all these battle-experts stand armored, who among the enemies, even one whose strength (bala) is equal to Indra's, could indeed conquer them in battle?
शूराश्च हि कृतास्त्राश्च बलिनः स्वर्गलिप्सवः ।
धर्मज्ञा युद्धकुशला हन्युर्युद्धे सुरानपि ॥५६॥
56. śūrāśca hi kṛtāstrāśca balinaḥ svargalipsavaḥ ,
dharmajñā yuddhakuśalā hanyuryuddhe surānapi.

56. Indeed, they are brave, skilled in weaponry, strong, desirous of heaven, knowers of natural law (dharma), and adept in battle; they would slay even the gods in war.
एते स्थास्यन्ति संग्रामे पाण्डवानां वधार्थिनः ।
जयमाकाङ्क्षमाणा हि कौरवेयस्य दंशिताः ॥५७॥
57. ete sthāsyanti saṁgrāme pāṇḍavānāṁ vadhārthinaḥ ,
jayamākāṅkṣamāṇā hi kauraveyasya daṁśitāḥ.
57. ete sthāsyanti saṅgrāme pāṇḍavānām vadhārthinaḥ
jayam ākāṅkṣamāṇāḥ hi kauraveyasya daṃśitāḥ
57. hi ete daṃśitāḥ kauraveyasya jayam ākāṅkṣamāṇāḥ
pāṇḍavānām vadhārthinaḥ saṅgrāme sthāsyanti
57. Indeed, these armored warriors will stand in battle, desiring victory for Duryodhana and seeking the destruction of the Pandavas.
दैवायत्तमहं मन्ये जयं सुबलिनामपि ।
यत्र भीष्मो महाबाहुः शेते शरशताचितः ॥५८॥
58. daivāyattamahaṁ manye jayaṁ subalināmapi ,
yatra bhīṣmo mahābāhuḥ śete śaraśatācitaḥ.
58. daivāyattam aham manye jayam subalinām api
yatra bhīṣmaḥ mahābāhuḥ śete śaraśatācitaḥ
58. aham manye daivāyattam jayam api subalinām

58. I consider victory dependent on destiny, even for the very powerful, where the mighty-armed Bhishma lies covered by hundreds of arrows.
विकर्णश्चित्रसेनश्च बाह्लीकोऽथ जयद्रथः ।
भूरिश्रवा जयश्चैव जलसंधः सुदक्षिणः ॥५९॥
59. vikarṇaścitrasenaśca bāhlīko'tha jayadrathaḥ ,
bhūriśravā jayaścaiva jalasaṁdhaḥ sudakṣiṇaḥ.

59. Vikarna, Chitrasena, Bahlika, and Jayadratha; also Bhurishravas, Jaya, Jalasandha, and Sudakshina.
शलश्च रथिनां श्रेष्ठो भगदत्तश्च वीर्यवान् ।
एते चान्ये च राजानो देवैरपि सुदुर्जयाः ॥६०॥
60. śalaśca rathināṁ śreṣṭho bhagadattaśca vīryavān ,
ete cānye ca rājāno devairapi sudurjayāḥ.

ete ca anye ca rājānaḥ devaiḥ api sudurjayāḥ

60. And Shalya, the best of charioteers, and valorous Bhagadatta; these and other kings are very difficult to conquer even by the gods.
निहताः समरे शूराः पाण्डवैर्बलवत्तराः ।
किमन्यद्दैवसंयोगान्मन्यसे पुरुषाधम ॥६१॥
61. nihatāḥ samare śūrāḥ pāṇḍavairbalavattarāḥ ,
kimanyaddaivasaṁyogānmanyase puruṣādhama.
61. nihātāḥ samare śūrāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ balavattarāḥ
kim anyat daivasaṃyogāt manyase puruṣādhama
61. puruṣādhama pāṇḍavaiḥ balavattarāḥ śūrāḥ

61. Mighty warriors were killed in battle by the Pāṇḍavas. O vilest of men, what else do you consider as the cause, other than the confluence of destiny (daiva)?
यांश्च तान्स्तौषि सततं दुर्योधनरिपून्द्विज ।
तेषामपि हताः शूराः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥६२॥
62. yāṁśca tānstauṣi satataṁ duryodhanaripūndvija ,
teṣāmapi hatāḥ śūrāḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
62. yān ca tān stauṣi satatam duryodhanaripūn dvija
teṣām api hatāḥ śūrāḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
62. dvija yān ca tān duryodhanaripūn satatam stauṣi
teṣām api śūrāḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ hatāḥ
62. And those very enemies of Duryodhana whom you constantly praise, O twice-born (dvija) – even their brave warriors have been killed by hundreds and then by thousands.
क्षीयन्ते सर्वसैन्यानि कुरूणां पाण्डवैः सह ।
प्रभावं नात्र पश्यामि पाण्डवानां कथंचन ॥६३॥
63. kṣīyante sarvasainyāni kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
prabhāvaṁ nātra paśyāmi pāṇḍavānāṁ kathaṁcana.

prabhāvam na atra paśyāmi pāṇḍavānām kathaṃcana
63. kurūṇām pāṇḍavaiḥ saha sarvasainyāni kṣīyante

63. All the armies, both of the Kurus and along with the Pāṇḍavas, are being destroyed. Yet, I see no special power or influence of the Pāṇḍavas in this matter at all.
यांस्तान्बलवतो नित्यं मन्यसे त्वं द्विजाधम ।
यतिष्येऽहं यथाशक्ति योद्धुं तैः सह संयुगे ।
दुर्योधनहितार्थाय जयो दैवे प्रतिष्ठितः ॥६४॥
64. yāṁstānbalavato nityaṁ manyase tvaṁ dvijādhama ,
yatiṣye'haṁ yathāśakti yoddhuṁ taiḥ saha saṁyuge ,
duryodhanahitārthāya jayo daive pratiṣṭhitaḥ.
64. yān tān balavataḥ nityam manyase tvam
dvijādhama yatiṣye aham yathāśakti
yoddhum taiḥ saha saṃyuge
duryodhanahitārthāya jayaḥ daive pratiṣṭhitaḥ
64. dvijādhama tvam yān tān balavataḥ
nityam manyase aham duryodhanahitārthāya
taiḥ saha saṃyuge yathāśakti yoddhum
yatiṣye jayaḥ daive pratiṣṭhitaḥ
64. O vilest of the twice-born (dvijādhama), you who always consider those as mighty – I shall strive with all my might to fight with them in battle for the welfare of Duryodhana. Victory is established in destiny (daiva).
