वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्ते यक्षवचनादुदतिष्ठन्त पाण्डवाः ।
क्षुत्पिपासे च सर्वेषां क्षणे तस्मिन्व्यगच्छताम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataste yakṣavacanādudatiṣṭhanta pāṇḍavāḥ ,
kṣutpipāse ca sarveṣāṁ kṣaṇe tasminvyagacchatām.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said, 'Thereafter, at the Yakṣa's command, the Pāṇḍavas arose. And at that moment, the hunger and thirst of all of them disappeared.'
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
सरस्येकेन पादेन तिष्ठन्तमपराजितम् ।
पृच्छामि को भवान्देवो न मे यक्षो मतो भवान् ॥२॥
2. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
sarasyekena pādena tiṣṭhantamaparājitam ,
pṛcchāmi ko bhavāndevo na me yakṣo mato bhavān.
2. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca sarasi ekena pādena tiṣṭhantam aparājitam
pṛcchāmi kaḥ bhavān devaḥ na me yakṣaḥ mataḥ bhavān
2. Yudhishthira said, "Standing in the lake on one foot, undefeated, I ask: Who are you, a god? I do not consider you a yakṣa."
वसूनां वा भवानेको रुद्राणामथ वा भवान् ।
अथ वा मरुतां श्रेष्ठो वज्री वा त्रिदशेश्वरः ॥३॥
3. vasūnāṁ vā bhavāneko rudrāṇāmatha vā bhavān ,
atha vā marutāṁ śreṣṭho vajrī vā tridaśeśvaraḥ.
3. vasūnām vā bhavān ekaḥ rudrāṇām atha vā bhavān
atha vā marutām śreṣṭhaḥ vajrī vā tridaśeśvaraḥ
3. Are you one of the Vasus, or are you one of the Rudras? Or are you the chief of the Maruts, or Vajrin (Indra), the lord of the thirty gods?
मम हि भ्रातर इमे सहस्रशतयोधिनः ।
न तं योगं प्रपश्यामि येन स्युर्विनिपातिताः ॥४॥
4. mama hi bhrātara ime sahasraśatayodhinaḥ ,
na taṁ yogaṁ prapaśyāmi yena syurvinipātitāḥ.
4. mama hi bhrātaraḥ ime sahasraśatayodhinaḥ na
tam yogam prapaśyāmi yena syuḥ vinipātitāḥ
4. Indeed, these brothers of mine are warriors capable of fighting thousands and hundreds. I cannot conceive of the means (yoga) by which they could have been brought down.
सुखं प्रतिविबुद्धानामिन्द्रियाण्युपलक्षये ।
स भवान्सुहृदस्माकमथ वा नः पिता भवान् ॥५॥
5. sukhaṁ prativibuddhānāmindriyāṇyupalakṣaye ,
sa bhavānsuhṛdasmākamatha vā naḥ pitā bhavān.
5. sukham pratitivibuddhānām indriyāṇi upalakṣaye
sa bhavān suhṛt asmākam atha vā naḥ pitā bhavān
5. I observe that, despite being awakened, their senses appear to be at ease. Therefore, you must be our well-wisher, or perhaps you are even our father.
यक्ष उवाच ।
अहं ते जनकस्तात धर्मो मृदुपराक्रम ।
त्वां दिदृक्षुरनुप्राप्तो विद्धि मां भरतर्षभ ॥६॥
6. yakṣa uvāca ,
ahaṁ te janakastāta dharmo mṛduparākrama ,
tvāṁ didṛkṣuranuprāpto viddhi māṁ bharatarṣabha.
6. yakṣa uvāca aham te janakaḥ tāta dharmaḥ mṛduparākrama
tvām didṛkṣuḥ anuprāptaḥ viddhi mām bharatarṣabha
6. The Yakṣa said: "O son, I am your father, Dharma (natural law), whose power is gentle. Having desired to see you, I have arrived. Know me to be him, O best of Bharatas."
यशः सत्यं दमः शौचमार्जवं ह्रीरचापलम् ।
दानं तपो ब्रह्मचर्यमित्येतास्तनवो मम ॥७॥
7. yaśaḥ satyaṁ damaḥ śaucamārjavaṁ hrīracāpalam ,
dānaṁ tapo brahmacaryamityetāstanavo mama.
7. yaśaḥ satyam damaḥ śaucam ārjavam hrīḥ acāpalam
dānam tapaḥ brahmacaryam iti etāḥ tanavaḥ mama
7. Fame, truth, self-control, purity, integrity, modesty, steadfastness, generosity, austerity (tapas), and celibacy (brahmacarya)—these, indeed, are my forms.
अहिंसा समता शान्तिस्तपः शौचममत्सरः ।
द्वाराण्येतानि मे विद्धि प्रियो ह्यसि सदा मम ॥८॥
8. ahiṁsā samatā śāntistapaḥ śaucamamatsaraḥ ,
dvārāṇyetāni me viddhi priyo hyasi sadā mama.
8. ahiṁsā samatā śāntiḥ tapaḥ śaucam amatsaraḥ
dvārāṇi etāni me viddhi priyaḥ hi asi sadā mama
8. Non-violence, impartiality, peace, austerity (tapas), purity, and absence of envy—know these to be my gates. For you are always dear to me.
दिष्ट्या पञ्चसु रक्तोऽसि दिष्ट्या ते षट्पदी जिता ।
द्वे पूर्वे मध्यमे द्वे च द्वे चान्ते सांपरायिके ॥९॥
9. diṣṭyā pañcasu rakto'si diṣṭyā te ṣaṭpadī jitā ,
dve pūrve madhyame dve ca dve cānte sāṁparāyike.
9. diṣṭyā pañcasu raktaḥ asi diṣṭyā te ṣaṭpadī jitā
dve pūrve madhyame dve ca dve ca ante sāṁparāyike
9. Fortunately, you are dedicated to the five (virtues/duties); fortunately, the six-fold (obstacles/passions) have been conquered by you. And the two that come first, and the two that are in the middle, and the two that come last, are all related to the ultimate goal (sāṁparāyika).
धर्मोऽहमस्मि भद्रं ते जिज्ञासुस्त्वामिहागतः ।
आनृशंस्येन तुष्टोऽस्मि वरं दास्यामि तेऽनघ ॥१०॥
10. dharmo'hamasmi bhadraṁ te jijñāsustvāmihāgataḥ ,
ānṛśaṁsyena tuṣṭo'smi varaṁ dāsyāmi te'nagha.
10. dharmaḥ aham asmi bhadram te jijñāsuḥ tvām iha āgataḥ
| ānṛśaṃsyena tuṣṭaḥ asmi varam dāsyāmi te anagha
10. I am Dharma (natural law). May good fortune be with you. I have come here to you, desirous to know. O sinless one, I am pleased by your compassion and will grant you a boon.
वरं वृणीष्व राजेन्द्र दाता ह्यस्मि तवानघ ।
ये हि मे पुरुषा भक्ता न तेषामस्ति दुर्गतिः ॥११॥
11. varaṁ vṛṇīṣva rājendra dātā hyasmi tavānagha ,
ye hi me puruṣā bhaktā na teṣāmasti durgatiḥ.
11. varam vṛṇīṣva rājendra dātā hi asmi tava anagha
| ye hi me puruṣā bhaktā na teṣām asti durgatiḥ
11. O king of kings, choose a boon. Indeed, I am a giver to you, O sinless one. For those men who are devoted (bhakta) to me, there is no misfortune.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अरणीसहितं यस्य मृग आदाय गच्छति ।
तस्याग्नयो न लुप्येरन्प्रथमोऽस्तु वरो मम ॥१२॥
12. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
araṇīsahitaṁ yasya mṛga ādāya gacchati ,
tasyāgnayo na lupyeranprathamo'stu varo mama.
12. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | araṇīsahitam yasya mṛgaḥ ādāya gacchati
| tasya agnayaḥ na lupyeraṃ prathamaḥ astu varaḥ mama
12. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "May his (sacred) fires not be extinguished, the fires of that person whose deer has taken the fire-sticks and gone away. Let this be my first boon."
धर्म उवाच ।
अरणीसहितं तस्य ब्राह्मणस्य हृतं मया ।
मृगवेषेण कौन्तेय जिज्ञासार्थं तव प्रभो ॥१३॥
13. dharma uvāca ,
araṇīsahitaṁ tasya brāhmaṇasya hṛtaṁ mayā ,
mṛgaveṣeṇa kaunteya jijñāsārthaṁ tava prabho.
13. dharma uvāca | araṇīsahitam tasya brāhmaṇasya hṛtam
mayā | mṛgaveṣeṇa kaunteya jijñāsārtham tava prabho
13. Dharma (natural law) said: "O son of Kuntī, O lord, I myself took those fire-sticks of that Brahmin, disguised as a deer, for the purpose of testing you."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ददानीत्येव भगवानुत्तरं प्रत्यपद्यत ।
अन्यं वरय भद्रं ते वरं त्वममरोपम ॥१४॥
14. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dadānītyeva bhagavānuttaraṁ pratyapadyata ,
anyaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te varaṁ tvamamaropama.
14. vaiśampāyana uvāca dadāmi iti eva bhagavān uttaram
pratyapadyata anyam varaya bhadram te varam tvam amaropama
14. Vaiśampāyana said: The revered one replied, "I shall grant (it)." He continued, "Choose another boon, O you who are like a god. May you be well."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
वर्षाणि द्वादशारण्ये त्रयोदशमुपस्थितम् ।
तत्र नो नाभिजानीयुर्वसतो मनुजाः क्वचित् ॥१५॥
15. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
varṣāṇi dvādaśāraṇye trayodaśamupasthitam ,
tatra no nābhijānīyurvasato manujāḥ kvacit.
15. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca varṣāṇi dvādaśa araṇye trayodaśam
upasthitam tatra naḥ na abhijānīyuḥ vasataḥ manujāḥ kvacit
15. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "Having completed twelve years in the forest, the thirteenth year has now arrived. While we reside there, no people should recognize us anywhere."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ददानीत्येव भगवानुत्तरं प्रत्यपद्यत ।
भूयश्चाश्वासयामास कौन्तेयं सत्यविक्रमम् ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dadānītyeva bhagavānuttaraṁ pratyapadyata ,
bhūyaścāśvāsayāmāsa kaunteyaṁ satyavikramam.
16. vaiśampāyana uvāca dadāmi iti eva bhagavān uttaram
pratyapadyata bhūyaḥ ca āśvāsayām āsa kaunteyam satyavikramam
16. Vaiśampāyana said: The revered one replied, "I shall grant (it)." And again, he reassured the truly valorous son of Kuntī.
यद्यपि स्वेन रूपेण चरिष्यथ महीमिमाम् ।
न वो विज्ञास्यते कश्चित्त्रिषु लोकेषु भारत ॥१७॥
17. yadyapi svena rūpeṇa cariṣyatha mahīmimām ,
na vo vijñāsyate kaścittriṣu lokeṣu bhārata.
17. yadyapi svena rūpeṇa cariṣyatha mahīm imām na
vaḥ vijñāsyate kaścit triṣu lokeṣu bhārata
17. Even if you wander this earth in your own forms, no one in the three worlds, O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), will recognize you.
वर्षं त्रयोदशं चेदं मत्प्रसादात्कुरूद्वहाः ।
विराटनगरे गूढा अविज्ञाताश्चरिष्यथ ॥१८॥
18. varṣaṁ trayodaśaṁ cedaṁ matprasādātkurūdvahāḥ ,
virāṭanagare gūḍhā avijñātāścariṣyatha.
18. varṣam trayodaśam ca idam matprasādāt kurūdvahāḥ
virāṭanagare gūḍhāḥ avijñātāḥ cariṣyatha
18. O leaders of the Kurus, by my grace, you will pass this thirteenth year, living hidden and unknown in the city of Virata.
यद्वः संकल्पितं रूपं मनसा यस्य यादृशम् ।
तादृशं तादृशं सर्वे छन्दतो धारयिष्यथ ॥१९॥
19. yadvaḥ saṁkalpitaṁ rūpaṁ manasā yasya yādṛśam ,
tādṛśaṁ tādṛśaṁ sarve chandato dhārayiṣyatha.
19. yat vaḥ saṅkalpitam rūpam manasā yasya yādṛśam
tādṛśam tādṛśam sarve chandataḥ dhārayiṣyatha
19. Whatever form each of you has conceived in your mind, all of you will assume that very form according to your will.
अरणीसहितं चेदं ब्राह्मणाय प्रयच्छत ।
जिज्ञासार्थं मया ह्येतदाहृतं मृगरूपिणा ॥२०॥
20. araṇīsahitaṁ cedaṁ brāhmaṇāya prayacchata ,
jijñāsārthaṁ mayā hyetadāhṛtaṁ mṛgarūpiṇā.
20. araṇīsahitām ca idam brāhmaṇāya prayacchata
jijñāsārtham mayā hi etat āhṛtam mṛgarūpiṇā
20. And give this (fire-sticks) along with the `araṇī` to the brahmin. Indeed, this was taken by me, who was in the form of a deer, for the purpose of testing.
तृतीयं गृह्यतां पुत्र वरमप्रतिमं महत् ।
त्वं हि मत्प्रभवो राजन्विदुरश्च ममांशभाक् ॥२१॥
21. tṛtīyaṁ gṛhyatāṁ putra varamapratimaṁ mahat ,
tvaṁ hi matprabhavo rājanviduraśca mamāṁśabhāk.
21. tṛtīyam gṛhyatām putra varam apratimam mahat tvam
hi matprabhavaḥ rājan viduraḥ ca mama aṃśabhāk
21. O son (Yudhishthira), accept this third great and incomparable boon. Indeed, O king, you are born from me (dharma), and Vidura is also a partaker of my essence (dharma).
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
देवदेवो मया दृष्टो भवान्साक्षात्सनातनः ।
यं ददासि वरं तुष्टस्तं ग्रहीष्याम्यहं पितः ॥२२॥
22. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
devadevo mayā dṛṣṭo bhavānsākṣātsanātanaḥ ,
yaṁ dadāsi varaṁ tuṣṭastaṁ grahīṣyāmyahaṁ pitaḥ.
22. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca devadevaḥ mayā dṛṣṭaḥ bhavān sākṣāt
sanātanaḥ yam dadāsi varam tuṣṭaḥ tam grahīṣyāmi aham pitaḥ
22. Yudhishthira said, "I have directly seen you, the God of gods, the eternal one. O father, I will accept whatever boon you are pleased to grant."
जयेयं लोभमोहौ च क्रोधं चाहं सदा विभो ।
दाने तपसि सत्ये च मनो मे सततं भवेत् ॥२३॥
23. jayeyaṁ lobhamohau ca krodhaṁ cāhaṁ sadā vibho ,
dāne tapasi satye ca mano me satataṁ bhavet.
23. jayeyam lobhamohau ca krodham ca aham sadā vibho
dāne tapasi satye ca manaḥ me satatam bhavet
23. O all-pervading one (vibho), may I always conquer greed (lobha), delusion (moha), and anger (krodha). May my mind always be directed towards charity (dāna) and austerity (tapas).
धर्म उवाच ।
उपपन्नो गुणैः सर्वैः स्वभावेनासि पाण्डव ।
भवान्धर्मः पुनश्चैव यथोक्तं ते भविष्यति ॥२४॥
24. dharma uvāca ,
upapanno guṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ svabhāvenāsi pāṇḍava ,
bhavāndharmaḥ punaścaiva yathoktaṁ te bhaviṣyati.
24. dharmaḥ uvāca upapannaḥ guṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ svabhāvena asi
pāṇḍava bhavān dharmaḥ punaḥ ca eva yathāuktam te bhaviṣyati
24. Dharma said, "O Pāṇḍava, you are endowed with all good qualities by your very nature. You are (the embodiment of) natural law (dharma) itself, and indeed, what you have expressed will come to pass for you."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्दधे धर्मो भगवाँल्लोकभावनः ।
समेताः पाण्डवाश्चैव सुखसुप्ता मनस्विनः ॥२५॥
25. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvāntardadhe dharmo bhagavāँllokabhāvanaḥ ,
sametāḥ pāṇḍavāścaiva sukhasuptā manasvinaḥ.
25. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktvā antardadhe dharmaḥ bhagavān
lokabhāvanaḥ sametāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ ca eva sukhasuptāḥ manasvinaḥ
25. Vaiśampāyana said, "Having spoken thus, Dharma (dharma), the revered sustainer of worlds (lokabhāvana), disappeared. And the Pāṇḍavas, who had assembled, the thoughtful ones (manasvin), slept peacefully."
अभ्येत्य चाश्रमं वीराः सर्व एव गतक्लमाः ।
आरणेयं ददुस्तस्मै ब्राह्मणाय तपस्विने ॥२६॥
26. abhyetya cāśramaṁ vīrāḥ sarva eva gataklamāḥ ,
āraṇeyaṁ dadustasmai brāhmaṇāya tapasvine.
26. abhyetya ca āśramam vīrāḥ sarve eva gataklamāḥ
āraṇeyam daduḥ tasmai brāhmaṇāya tapasvine
26. And having reached the hermitage (āśrama), all the heroes, their fatigue completely gone, gave the forest-born child (āraṇeya) to that ascetic (tapasvin) brahmin.
इदं समुत्थानसमागमं महत्पितुश्च पुत्रस्य च कीर्तिवर्धनम् ।
पठन्नरः स्याद्विजितेन्द्रियो वशी सपुत्रपौत्रः शतवर्षभाग्भवेत् ॥२७॥
27. idaṁ samutthānasamāgamaṁ maha;tpituśca putrasya ca kīrtivardhanam ,
paṭhannaraḥ syādvijitendriyo vaśī; saputrapautraḥ śatavarṣabhāgbhavet.
27. idam samutthānasamāgamam mahat pituḥ
ca putrasya ca kīrtivardhanam
paṭhan naraḥ syāt vijitendriyaḥ vaśī
saputrapautraḥ śatavarṣabhāk bhavet
27. This great meeting and reunion, which enhances the fame of both father and son—a man who recites this becomes self-controlled (vaśī) and a master of his senses (indriya). He shall live a hundred years, accompanied by his sons and grandsons.
न चाप्यधर्मे न सुहृद्विभेदने परस्वहारे परदारमर्शने ।
कदर्यभावे न रमेन्मनः सदा नृणां सदाख्यानमिदं विजानताम् ॥२८॥
28. na cāpyadharme na suhṛdvibhedane; parasvahāre paradāramarśane ,
kadaryabhāve na ramenmanaḥ sadā; nṛṇāṁ sadākhyānamidaṁ vijānatām.
28. na ca api adharme na suhṛdvibhedane
parasvahāre paradāramarśane
kadaryabhāve na ramet manaḥ sadā
nṛṇām sadākhyānam idam vijānatām
28. The mind of those who understand this good narration should never take delight in unrighteousness (adharma), nor in creating divisions among friends, nor in stealing others' property, nor in molesting other men's wives, nor in miserliness.
