समरेऽत्युग्रकर्माणः कर्मभिर्व्यञ्जितश्रमाः ।
सकृष्णाः पाण्डवाः पञ्च देवैरपि दुरासदाः ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: In battle, the five Pāṇḍavas, along with Krishna (sakṛṣṇāḥ), whose actions were exceedingly fierce (atyugrakarmāṇaḥ) and whose tireless effort (vyañjitaśramāḥ) was manifested through their deeds, were difficult even for the gods (devaiḥ) to overcome.
सत्त्वकर्मान्वयैर्बुद्ध्या प्रकृत्या यशसा श्रिया ।
नैव भूतो न भविता कृष्णतुल्यगुणः पुमान् ॥२॥
2. sattvakarmānvayairbuddhyā prakṛtyā yaśasā śriyā ,
naiva bhūto na bhavitā kṛṣṇatulyaguṇaḥ pumān.

na eva bhūtaḥ na bhavitā kṛṣṇatulyaguṇaḥ pumān

2. No person (pumān) with qualities comparable to Krishna (kṛṣṇatulyaguṇaḥ) has ever existed, nor will ever exist, whether in terms of inherent character (sattva), actions (karma), lineage (anvaya), intellect (buddhyā), fundamental nature (prakṛti), fame (yaśasā), or prosperity (śriyā).
सत्यधर्मपरो दाता विप्रपूजादिभिर्गुणैः ।
सदैव त्रिदिवं प्राप्तो राजा किल युधिष्ठिरः ॥३॥
3. satyadharmaparo dātā viprapūjādibhirguṇaiḥ ,
sadaiva tridivaṁ prāpto rājā kila yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

3. It is indeed said that King Yudhishthira, who was devoted to truth and his intrinsic nature (dharma), generous, and possessed qualities such as honoring brahmins, always attained heaven.
युगान्ते चान्तको राजञ्जामदग्न्यश्च वीर्यवान् ।
रणस्थो भीमसेनश्च कथ्यन्ते सदृशास्त्रयः ॥४॥
4. yugānte cāntako rājañjāmadagnyaśca vīryavān ,
raṇastho bhīmasenaśca kathyante sadṛśāstrayaḥ.
4. yugānte ca antakaḥ rājan jāmadagnyaḥ ca vīryavān
raṇasthaḥ bhīmasenaḥ ca kathyante sadṛśāḥ trayaḥ
4. rājan yugānte antakaḥ ca vīryavān jāmadagnyaḥ ca
raṇasthaḥ bhīmasenaḥ ca trayaḥ sadṛśāḥ kathyante
4. O King, these three are said to be equal: Death (Antaka) at the end of an age, the powerful son of Jamadagni (Paraśurāma), and Bhimasena standing on the battlefield.
प्रतिज्ञाकर्मदक्षस्य रणे गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
उपमां नाधिगच्छामि पार्थस्य सदृशीं क्षितौ ॥५॥
5. pratijñākarmadakṣasya raṇe gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
upamāṁ nādhigacchāmi pārthasya sadṛśīṁ kṣitau.

upamām na adhigacchāmi pārthasya sadṛśīm kṣitau

5. I find no equal comparison on earth for Partha (Arjuna), the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, who is skilled in fulfilling his vowed actions (karma) in battle.
गुरुवात्सल्यमत्यन्तं नैभृत्यं विनयो दमः ।
नकुलेऽप्रातिरूप्यं च शौर्यं च नियतानि षट् ॥६॥
6. guruvātsalyamatyantaṁ naibhṛtyaṁ vinayo damaḥ ,
nakule'prātirūpyaṁ ca śauryaṁ ca niyatāni ṣaṭ.

nakule aprātirūpyam ca śauryam ca niyatāni ṣaṭ
6. nakule guruvātsalyam atyantam naibhṛtyam vinayaḥ

6. In Nakula, six qualities are consistently present: intense affection for his teacher (guru), modesty, discipline, self-control, unequaled beauty, and valor.
श्रुतगाम्भीर्यमाधुर्यसत्त्ववीर्यपराक्रमैः ।
सदृशो देवयोर्वीरः सहदेवः किलाश्विनोः ॥७॥
7. śrutagāmbhīryamādhuryasattvavīryaparākramaiḥ ,
sadṛśo devayorvīraḥ sahadevaḥ kilāśvinoḥ.

7. It is said that the hero Sahadeva is similar to the two divine Ashvins in his profound knowledge, charming nature, inner strength (sattva), valor, and prowess.
ये च कृष्णे गुणाः स्फीताः पाण्डवेषु च ये गुणाः ।
अभिमन्यौ किलैकस्था दृश्यन्ते गुणसंचयाः ॥८॥
8. ye ca kṛṣṇe guṇāḥ sphītāḥ pāṇḍaveṣu ca ye guṇāḥ ,
abhimanyau kilaikasthā dṛśyante guṇasaṁcayāḥ.
8. ye ca kṛṣṇe guṇāḥ sphītāḥ pāṇḍaveṣu ca ye guṇāḥ
abhimanyau kila ekasthā dṛśyante guṇasaṃcayāḥ
8. ye guṇāḥ kṛṣṇe sphītāḥ ca ye guṇāḥ pāṇḍaveṣu ca,
(te) guṇasaṃcayāḥ kila ekasthā abhimanyau dṛśyante
8. It is said that all the abundant virtues found in Krishna, and those qualities present in the Pandavas, are seen together, collected in one place, in Abhimanyu.
युधिष्ठिरस्य धैर्येण कृष्णस्य चरितेन च ।
कर्मभिर्भीमसेनस्य सदृशो भीमकर्मणः ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhirasya dhairyeṇa kṛṣṇasya caritena ca ,
karmabhirbhīmasenasya sadṛśo bhīmakarmaṇaḥ.
9. yudhiṣṭhirasya dhairyena kṛṣṇasya caritena ca
karmabhiḥ bhīmasenasya sadṛśaḥ bhīmakarmaṇaḥ
9. (saḥ) yudhiṣṭhirasya dhairyena,
kṛṣṇasya caritena ca,
bhīmasenasya bhīmakarmaṇaḥ karmabhiḥ ca sadṛśaḥ
9. He is similar to Yudhishthira in steadfastness, to Krishna in conduct, and to Bhimasena - who performs formidable deeds (karma) - in his actions (karma).
धनंजयस्य रूपेण विक्रमेण श्रुतेन च ।
विनयात्सहदेवस्य सदृशो नकुलस्य च ॥१०॥
10. dhanaṁjayasya rūpeṇa vikrameṇa śrutena ca ,
vinayātsahadevasya sadṛśo nakulasya ca.
10. dhanañjayasya rūpeṇa vikrameṇa śrutena ca
vinayāt sahadevasya sadṛśaḥ nakulasya ca
10. (saḥ) dhanañjayasya rūpeṇa vikrameṇa śrutena ca,
sahadevasya vinayāt,
nakulasya ca sadṛśaḥ
10. He is similar to Dhananjaya (Arjuna) in physical form, valor, and knowledge, and to Sahadeva in humility, and also to Nakula (in his own virtues).
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
अभिमन्युमहं सूत सौभद्रमपराजितम् ।
श्रोतुमिच्छामि कार्त्स्न्येन कथमायोधने हतः ॥११॥
11. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
abhimanyumahaṁ sūta saubhadramaparājitam ,
śrotumicchāmi kārtsnyena kathamāyodhane hataḥ.
11. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca abhimanyum aham sūta saubhadram
aparājitam śrotum icchāmi kārtsnyena katham āyodhane hataḥ
11. sūta aham aparājitam saubhadram abhimanyum
katham āyodhane hataḥ kārtsnyena śrotum icchāmi
11. Dhritarashtra said, "O charioteer, I wish to hear completely how Abhimanyu, the unconquered son of Subhadra, was killed in battle."
संजय उवाच ।
चक्रव्यूहो महाराज आचार्येणाभिकल्पितः ।
तत्र शक्रोपमाः सर्वे राजानो विनिवेशिताः ॥१२॥
12. saṁjaya uvāca ,
cakravyūho mahārāja ācāryeṇābhikalpitaḥ ,
tatra śakropamāḥ sarve rājāno viniveśitāḥ.
12. saṃjayaḥ uvāca cakravūhaḥ mahārāja ācāryeṇa
abhikalpitaḥ tatra śakropamāḥ sarve rājānaḥ viniveśitāḥ

12. Sanjaya said, "O great king, a circular battle formation (cakravūha) was devised by the preceptor (Droṇa). There, all the kings, comparable to Indra, were stationed."
संघातो राजपुत्राणां सर्वेषामभवत्तदा ।
कृताभिसमयाः सर्वे सुवर्णविकृतध्वजाः ॥१३॥
13. saṁghāto rājaputrāṇāṁ sarveṣāmabhavattadā ,
kṛtābhisamayāḥ sarve suvarṇavikṛtadhvajāḥ.
13. saṃghātaḥ rājaputrāṇām sarveṣām abhavat tadā
kṛtābhisamayāḥ sarve suvarṇavikṛtadhvajāḥ
13. tadā sarveṣām rājaputrāṇām saṃghātaḥ abhavat
sarve kṛtābhisamayāḥ suvarṇavikṛtadhvajāḥ
13. Then there was an assembly of all the princes. All of them had made their agreements/vows and possessed standards adorned with gold.
रक्ताम्बरधराः सर्वे सर्वे रक्तविभूषणाः ।
सर्वे रक्तपताकाश्च सर्वे वै हेममालिनः ॥१४॥
14. raktāmbaradharāḥ sarve sarve raktavibhūṣaṇāḥ ,
sarve raktapatākāśca sarve vai hemamālinaḥ.
14. raktāmbaradharāḥ sarve sarve raktavibhūṣaṇāḥ
sarve raktapatākāḥ ca sarve vai hemamālinaḥ

14. All wore red garments, all had red ornaments, and all had red banners; indeed, all wore golden garlands.
तेषां दशसहस्राणि बभूवुर्दृढधन्विनाम् ।
पौत्रं तव पुरस्कृत्य लक्ष्मणं प्रियदर्शनम् ॥१५॥
15. teṣāṁ daśasahasrāṇi babhūvurdṛḍhadhanvinām ,
pautraṁ tava puraskṛtya lakṣmaṇaṁ priyadarśanam.
15. teṣām daśasahasrāṇi babhūvuḥ dṛḍhadhanvinām
pautram tava puraskṛtya lakṣmaṇam priyadarśanam
15. tava priyadarśanam lakṣmaṇam pautram puraskṛtya
dṛḍhadhanvinām teṣām daśasahasrāṇi babhūvuḥ
15. Ten thousand strong-bowmen appeared, with your grandson Lakṣmaṇa, who was pleasant to behold, at their head.
अन्योन्यसमदुःखास्ते अन्योन्यसमसाहसाः ।
अन्योन्यं स्पर्धमानाश्च अन्योन्यस्य हिते रताः ॥१६॥
16. anyonyasamaduḥkhāste anyonyasamasāhasāḥ ,
anyonyaṁ spardhamānāśca anyonyasya hite ratāḥ.
16. anyonyasamaduḥkhāḥ te anyonyasamasāhasāḥ
anyonyam spardhamānāḥ ca anyonyasya hite ratāḥ
16. te anyonyasamaduḥkhāḥ anyonyasamasāhasāḥ ca
anyonyam spardhamānāḥ anyonyasya hite ratāḥ
16. They shared the same sorrows and equal valor. Though competing with each other, they were devoted to one another's welfare.
कर्णदुःशासनकृपैर्वृतो राजा महारथैः ।
देवराजोपमः श्रीमाञ्श्वेतच्छत्राभिसंवृतः ।
चामरव्यजनाक्षेपैरुदयन्निव भास्करः ॥१७॥
17. karṇaduḥśāsanakṛpairvṛto rājā mahārathaiḥ ,
devarājopamaḥ śrīmāñśvetacchatrābhisaṁvṛtaḥ ,
cāmaravyajanākṣepairudayanniva bhāskaraḥ.
17. karṇaduḥśāsanakṛpaiḥ vṛtaḥ rājā
mahārathaiḥ devarājopamaḥ śrīmān
śvetacchattrābhisamvṛtaḥ
cāmaravyajanākṣepaiḥ udayan iva bhāskaraḥ
17. rājā mahārathaiḥ karṇaduḥśāsanakṛpaiḥ
vṛtaḥ devarājopamaḥ śrīmān
śvetacchattrābhisamvṛtaḥ
cāmaravyajanākṣepaiḥ udayan bhāskaraḥ iva
17. The glorious king, surrounded by great charioteers like Karṇa, Duḥśāsana, and Kṛpa, was comparable to the king of gods (Devendra). Shaded by a white umbrella, and with the waving of chowries and fans, he shone like the rising sun.
प्रमुखे तस्य सैन्यस्य द्रोणोऽवस्थितनायके ।
सिन्धुराजस्तथातिष्ठच्छ्रीमान्मेरुरिवाचलः ॥१८॥
18. pramukhe tasya sainyasya droṇo'vasthitanāyake ,
sindhurājastathātiṣṭhacchrīmānmerurivācalaḥ.
18. pramukhe tasya sainyasya droṇaḥ avasthitanāyake
sindhurājaḥ tathā atiṣṭhat śrīmān meruḥ iva acalaḥ
18. tasya sainyasya pramukhe droṇaḥ avasthitanāyake
tathā śrīmān sindhurājaḥ meruḥ iva acalaḥ atiṣṭhat
18. In the vanguard of that army, Droṇa stood as its commander. Likewise, the glorious King of Sindhu (Jayadratha), like an immovable Mount Meru, stood firm.
सिन्धुराजस्य पार्श्वस्था अश्वत्थामपुरोगमाः ।
सुतास्तव महाराज त्रिंशत्त्रिदशसंनिभाः ॥१९॥
19. sindhurājasya pārśvasthā aśvatthāmapurogamāḥ ,
sutāstava mahārāja triṁśattridaśasaṁnibhāḥ.

sutāḥ tava mahārāja triṃśat tridaśasaṃnibhāḥ

19. Your thirty sons, O great king, resembling gods, stood by the side of the King of Sindhu, with Ashwatthama at their forefront.
गान्धारराजः कितवः शल्यो भूरिश्रवास्तथा ।
पार्श्वतः सिन्धुराजस्य व्यराजन्त महारथाः ॥२०॥
20. gāndhārarājaḥ kitavaḥ śalyo bhūriśravāstathā ,
pārśvataḥ sindhurājasya vyarājanta mahārathāḥ.
20. gāndhārarājaḥ kitavaḥ śalyaḥ bhūriśravāḥ tathā
pārśvataḥ sindhurājasya vyarājanta mahārathāḥ
20. gāndhārarājaḥ kitavaḥ śalyaḥ tathā bhūriśravāḥ

20. The King of Gandhara, the gambler, Shalya, and Bhurishravas - all great chariot-warriors - shone brightly by the side of the King of Sindhu.
