Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing that a son was born, Devayānī, with a pure smile, became distressed and began to worry about Śarmiṣṭhā, O Bhārata.

And then, at that place, she saw young boys who resembled gods, playing fearlessly. Astonished, she said this.

Having thus questioned the King, she then asked the boys, "O dear sons, what are the name and lineage of your Brahmin father? Please tell me truthfully, for I indeed wish to hear about him."

The boys then pointed with their forefingers to that very best of kings (Yayati) and identified Sharmishtha as their mother.

After saying this, they all approached the king together. However, the king, who was then in Devayani's presence, did not welcome them. So, the weeping boys then went to Sharmishtha.

Devayani spoke: Dharma has been overcome by adharma, and the natural order has been inverted. I have been insulted by Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvan.

O Brahmin, a man who, when chosen, does not grant (sexual union) to a woman seeking it, is called a "bhūṇahā" (slayer of an embryo) by those who speak of Brahman here (in this world).
