शुक्र उवाच ।
यः परेषां नरो नित्यमतिवादांस्तितिक्षति ।
देवयानि विजानीहि तेन सर्वमिदं जितम् ॥१॥
1. śukra uvāca ,
yaḥ pareṣāṁ naro nityamativādāṁstitikṣati ,
devayāni vijānīhi tena sarvamidaṁ jitam.
1. śukraḥ uvāca yaḥ pareṣām naraḥ nityam ativādān
titikṣati devayāni vijānīhi tena sarvam idam jitam
1. Shukra said: O Devayani, understand that the person who constantly endures the insults of others has conquered everything.
यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधं निगृह्णाति हयं यथा ।
स यन्तेत्युच्यते सद्भिर्न यो रश्मिषु लम्बते ॥२॥
2. yaḥ samutpatitaṁ krodhaṁ nigṛhṇāti hayaṁ yathā ,
sa yantetyucyate sadbhirna yo raśmiṣu lambate.
2. yaḥ samutpatitam krodham nigṛhṇāti hayam yathā saḥ
yantā iti ucyate sadbhiḥ na yaḥ raśmiṣu lambate
2. He who restrains his surging anger, just as one would a horse, is called a 'controller' by the wise, not one who merely clings to the reins.
यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधमक्रोधेन निरस्यति ।
देवयानि विजानीहि तेन सर्वमिदं जितम् ॥३॥
3. yaḥ samutpatitaṁ krodhamakrodhena nirasyati ,
devayāni vijānīhi tena sarvamidaṁ jitam.
3. yaḥ samutpatitam krodham akrodhena nirasyati
devayāni vijānīhi tena sarvam idam jitam
3. O Devayani, understand that the person who overcomes surging anger with non-anger has conquered everything.
यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधं क्षमयेह निरस्यति ।
यथोरगस्त्वचं जीर्णां स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥४॥
4. yaḥ samutpatitaṁ krodhaṁ kṣamayeha nirasyati ,
yathoragastvacaṁ jīrṇāṁ sa vai puruṣa ucyate.
4. yaḥ samutpatitam krodham kṣamayā iha nirasyati
yathā uragaḥ tvacam jīrṇām saḥ vai puruṣaḥ ucyate
4. He who, in this world, overcomes surging anger with forgiveness, just as a snake sheds its old skin, is indeed called a puruṣa.
यः संधारयते मन्युं योऽतिवादांस्तितिक्षति ।
यश्च तप्तो न तपति दृढं सोऽर्थस्य भाजनम् ॥५॥
5. yaḥ saṁdhārayate manyuṁ yo'tivādāṁstitikṣati ,
yaśca tapto na tapati dṛḍhaṁ so'rthasya bhājanam.
5. yaḥ saṃdhārayate manyuṃ yaḥ ativādān titikṣati yaḥ
ca taptaḥ na tapati dṛḍhaṃ saḥ arthasya bhājanam
5. He who restrains his anger, who tolerates harsh words, and who, even when afflicted, does not become agitated, he is indeed a firm recipient of prosperity.
यो यजेदपरिश्रान्तो मासि मासि शतं समाः ।
न क्रुध्येद्यश्च सर्वस्य तयोरक्रोधनोऽधिकः ॥६॥
6. yo yajedapariśrānto māsi māsi śataṁ samāḥ ,
na krudhyedyaśca sarvasya tayorakrodhano'dhikaḥ.
6. yaḥ yajet apariśrāntaḥ māsi māsi śataṃ samāḥ na
krudhyet yaḥ ca sarvasya tayoḥ akrodhanaḥ adhikaḥ
6. He who performs yagyas tirelessly every month for a hundred years, and he who never gets angry with anyone—among these two, the one who is not angry is superior.
यत्कुमाराः कुमार्यश्च वैरं कुर्युरचेतसः ।
न तत्प्राज्ञोऽनुकुर्वीत विदुस्ते न बलाबलम् ॥७॥
7. yatkumārāḥ kumāryaśca vairaṁ kuryuracetasaḥ ,
na tatprājño'nukurvīta viduste na balābalam.
7. yat kumārāḥ kumāryaḥ ca vairaṃ kuryuḥ acetasaḥ
na tat prājñaḥ anukurvīta viduḥ te na balābalam
7. A wise person should not imitate the hostilities that thoughtless boys and girls might create, for they do not understand relative strength.
देवयान्युवाच ।
वेदाहं तात बालापि धर्माणां यदिहान्तरम् ।
अक्रोधे चातिवादे च वेद चापि बलाबलम् ॥८॥
8. devayānyuvāca ,
vedāhaṁ tāta bālāpi dharmāṇāṁ yadihāntaram ,
akrodhe cātivāde ca veda cāpi balābalam.
8. devayānī uvāca veda aham tāta bālā api dharmāṇām yat
iha antaram akrodhe ca ativāde ca veda ca api balābalam
8. Devayani said: "Father, even though I am a mere girl, I understand the distinction among the various dharmas in this matter. I also know the relative power of non-anger and harsh speech."
शिष्यस्याशिष्यवृत्तेर्हि न क्षन्तव्यं बुभूषता ।
तस्मात्संकीर्णवृत्तेषु वासो मम न रोचते ॥९॥
9. śiṣyasyāśiṣyavṛtterhi na kṣantavyaṁ bubhūṣatā ,
tasmātsaṁkīrṇavṛtteṣu vāso mama na rocate.
9. śiṣyasya aśiṣyavṛtteḥ hi na kṣantavyaṃ bubhūṣatā
tasmāt saṃkīrṇavṛtteṣu vāsaḥ mama na rocate
9. Indeed, a disciple who acts unworthily should not be forgiven by one who desires to prosper. Therefore, living among those of degraded conduct does not please me.
पुमांसो ये हि निन्दन्ति वृत्तेनाभिजनेन च ।
न तेषु निवसेत्प्राज्ञः श्रेयोर्थी पापबुद्धिषु ॥१०॥
10. pumāṁso ye hi nindanti vṛttenābhijanena ca ,
na teṣu nivasetprājñaḥ śreyorthī pāpabuddhiṣu.
10. pumāṃsaḥ ye hi nindanti vṛttena abhijanenā ca na
teṣu nivaset prājñaḥ śreyas arthī pāpabuddhiṣu
10. A wise person seeking welfare should not associate with those evil-minded individuals who condemn others based on their character and lineage.
ये त्वेनमभिजानन्ति वृत्तेनाभिजनेन च ।
तेषु साधुषु वस्तव्यं स वासः श्रेष्ठ उच्यते ॥११॥
11. ye tvenamabhijānanti vṛttenābhijanena ca ,
teṣu sādhuṣu vastavyaṁ sa vāsaḥ śreṣṭha ucyate.
11. ye tu enam abhijānanti vṛttena abhijanenā ca
teṣu sādhuṣu vastavyam saḥ vāsaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ ucyate
11. But one should reside among those good people who recognize a person by their true character and lineage. Such a dwelling is declared to be the best.
वाग्दुरुक्तं महाघोरं दुहितुर्वृषपर्वणः ।
न ह्यतो दुष्करतरं मन्ये लोकेष्वपि त्रिषु ।
यः सपत्नश्रियं दीप्तां हीनश्रीः पर्युपासते ॥१२॥
12. vāgduruktaṁ mahāghoraṁ duhiturvṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ,
na hyato duṣkarataraṁ manye lokeṣvapi triṣu ,
yaḥ sapatnaśriyaṁ dīptāṁ hīnaśrīḥ paryupāsate.
12. vāc duruktam mahāghoram duhituḥ
vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ na hi ataḥ duṣkarataram
manye lokeṣu api triṣu yaḥ
sapatnaśriyam dīptām hīnaśrīḥ pari upāsate
12. The extremely terrible verbal abuse originated from Vṛṣaparvan's daughter. Indeed, I do not believe there is anything more difficult in all three worlds than for a person, devoid of their own splendor, to be forced to serve the radiant glory of a rival.
