वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्ताः प्रयातास्ते पाण्डवा जनमेजय ।
राज्ञा दक्षिणपाञ्चालान्द्रुपदेनाभिरक्षितान् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktāḥ prayātāste pāṇḍavā janamejaya ,
rājñā dakṣiṇapāñcālāndrupadenābhirakṣitān.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "O Janamejaya, thus addressed, those Pāṇḍavas set out for the Southern Pañcāla country, which was protected by King Drupada."
ततस्ते तं महात्मानं शुद्धात्मानमकल्मषम् ।
ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्पथि द्वैपायनं तदा ॥२॥
2. tataste taṁ mahātmānaṁ śuddhātmānamakalmaṣam ,
dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavā rājanpathi dvaipāyanaṁ tadā.
2. tataḥ te tam mahātmānam śuddhātmānam akalmaṣam
| dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavāḥ rājan pathi dvaipāyanam tadā
2. Then, O King, the Pāṇḍavas on their way saw the great-souled (mahātman), pure-souled (śuddhātman), faultless Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) at that time.
तस्मै यथावत्सत्कारं कृत्वा तेन च सान्त्विताः ।
कथान्ते चाभ्यनुज्ञाताः प्रययुर्द्रुपदक्षयम् ॥३॥
3. tasmai yathāvatsatkāraṁ kṛtvā tena ca sāntvitāḥ ,
kathānte cābhyanujñātāḥ prayayurdrupadakṣayam.
3. tasmai yathāvat satkāram kṛtvā tena ca sāntvitāḥ |
kathā ante ca abhyanujñātāḥ prayayuḥ drupada-kṣayam
3. Having offered him proper hospitality (satkāra), and being comforted by him, they were dismissed at the end of the discourse and then proceeded to Drupada's abode.
पश्यन्तो रमणीयानि वनानि च सरांसि च ।
तत्र तत्र वसन्तश्च शनैर्जग्मुर्महारथाः ॥४॥
4. paśyanto ramaṇīyāni vanāni ca sarāṁsi ca ,
tatra tatra vasantaśca śanairjagmurmahārathāḥ.
4. paśyantaḥ ramaṇīyāni vanāni ca sarāṃsi ca |
tatra tatra vasantaḥ ca śanaiḥ jagmuḥ mahārathāḥ
4. Beholding charming forests and lakes, and dwelling here and there, those great warriors (mahāratha) slowly proceeded.
स्वाध्यायवन्तः शुचयो मधुराः प्रियवादिनः ।
आनुपूर्व्येण संप्राप्ताः पाञ्चालान्कुरुनन्दनाः ॥५॥
5. svādhyāyavantaḥ śucayo madhurāḥ priyavādinaḥ ,
ānupūrvyeṇa saṁprāptāḥ pāñcālānkurunandanāḥ.

5. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandanāḥ), those devoted to sacred study (svādhyāya), pure, sweet, and pleasant-speaking, arrived in Pañcāla in due succession.
ते तु दृष्ट्वा पुरं तच्च स्कन्धावारं च पाण्डवाः ।
कुम्भकारस्य शालायां निवेशं चक्रिरे तदा ॥६॥
6. te tu dṛṣṭvā puraṁ tacca skandhāvāraṁ ca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
kumbhakārasya śālāyāṁ niveśaṁ cakrire tadā.
6. te tu dṛṣṭvā puraṃ tat ca skandhāvāraṃ ca pāṇḍavāḥ
kumbhakārasya śālāyām niveśaṃ cakrire tadā
6. The Pāṇḍavas, having seen that city and also the encampment, then made their dwelling in a potter's shed.
तत्र भैक्षं समाजह्रुर्ब्राह्मीं वृत्तिं समाश्रिताः ।
तांश्च प्राप्तांस्तदा वीराञ्जज्ञिरे न नराः क्वचित् ॥७॥
7. tatra bhaikṣaṁ samājahrurbrāhmīṁ vṛttiṁ samāśritāḥ ,
tāṁśca prāptāṁstadā vīrāñjajñire na narāḥ kvacit.
7. tatra bhaikṣaṃ samājahruḥ brāhmīm vṛttim samāśritāḥ
tān ca prāptān tadā vīrān jajñire na narāḥ kvacit
7. There they collected alms, having adopted the livelihood (vṛtti) of a brahmin. Yet, no one (nara) recognized these heroes (vīra) upon their arrival.
यज्ञसेनस्य कामस्तु पाण्डवाय किरीटिने ।
कृष्णां दद्यामिति सदा न चैतद्विवृणोति सः ॥८॥
8. yajñasenasya kāmastu pāṇḍavāya kirīṭine ,
kṛṣṇāṁ dadyāmiti sadā na caitadvivṛṇoti saḥ.
8. yajñasenasya kāmaḥ tu pāṇḍavāya kirīṭine
kṛṣṇām dadyām iti sadā na ca etat vivṛṇoti saḥ
8. Yajñasena's (Drupada's) desire, however, was always, 'I should give Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi) to the crowned Pāṇḍava (Arjuna),' but he never revealed this.
सोऽन्वेषमाणः कौन्तेयान्पाञ्चाल्यो जनमेजय ।
दृढं धनुरनायम्यं कारयामास भारत ॥९॥
9. so'nveṣamāṇaḥ kaunteyānpāñcālyo janamejaya ,
dṛḍhaṁ dhanuranāyamyaṁ kārayāmāsa bhārata.
9. saḥ anveṣamāṇaḥ kaunteyān pāñcālyaḥ janamejaya
dṛḍham dhanuḥ anāyamyam kārayāmāsa bhārata
9. O Janamejaya (janamejaya), O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), that king of Pañcāla (Pāñcālyaḥ), while searching for the sons of Kuntī (Kaunteya), caused a strong, unbendable bow to be made.
यन्त्रं वैहायसं चापि कारयामास कृत्रिमम् ।
तेन यन्त्रेण सहितं राजा लक्ष्यं च काञ्चनम् ॥१०॥
10. yantraṁ vaihāyasaṁ cāpi kārayāmāsa kṛtrimam ,
tena yantreṇa sahitaṁ rājā lakṣyaṁ ca kāñcanam.
10. yantram vaihāyasam ca api kārayāmāsa kṛtrimam
tena yantreṇa sahitam rājā lakṣyam ca kāñcanam
10. He also had an artificial aerial machine constructed. Along with that machine, the king set up a golden target.
द्रुपद उवाच ।
इदं सज्यं धनुः कृत्वा सज्येनानेन सायकैः ।
अतीत्य लक्ष्यं यो वेद्धा स लब्धा मत्सुतामिति ॥११॥
11. drupada uvāca ,
idaṁ sajyaṁ dhanuḥ kṛtvā sajyenānena sāyakaiḥ ,
atītya lakṣyaṁ yo veddhā sa labdhā matsutāmiti.
11. drupadaḥ uvāca idam sajyam dhanuḥ kṛtvā sajyena anena
sāyakaiḥ atītya lakṣyam yaḥ veddhā sa labdhā mat-sutā iti
11. Drupada said: 'Whoever strings this bow, and then, with this strung bow and arrows, hits the target that is beyond (the machine), he shall obtain my daughter.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इति स द्रुपदो राजा सर्वतः समघोषयत् ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा पार्थिवाः सर्वे समीयुस्तत्र भारत ॥१२॥
12. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
iti sa drupado rājā sarvataḥ samaghoṣayat ,
tacchrutvā pārthivāḥ sarve samīyustatra bhārata.
12. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca iti sa drupadaḥ rājā sarvataḥ
samaghoṣayat tat śrutvā pārthivāḥ sarve samīyuḥ tatra bhārata
12. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Thus, King Drupada proclaimed everywhere. O Bhārata, having heard that, all the kings assembled there.'
ऋषयश्च महात्मानः स्वयंवरदिदृक्षया ।
दुर्योधनपुरोगाश्च सकर्णाः कुरवो नृप ॥१३॥
13. ṛṣayaśca mahātmānaḥ svayaṁvaradidṛkṣayā ,
duryodhanapurogāśca sakarṇāḥ kuravo nṛpa.
13. ṛṣayaḥ ca mahā-ātmānaḥ svayamvara-didṛkṣayā
duryodhana-puragāḥ ca sa-karṇāḥ kuravaḥ nṛpa
13. O king (Janamejaya), great-souled sages also came with the desire to witness the self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara). Additionally, the Kurus, led by Duryodhana and accompanied by Karṇa, also arrived.
ब्राह्मणाश्च महाभागा देशेभ्यः समुपागमन् ।
तेऽभ्यर्चिता राजगणा द्रुपदेन महात्मना ॥१४॥
14. brāhmaṇāśca mahābhāgā deśebhyaḥ samupāgaman ,
te'bhyarcitā rājagaṇā drupadena mahātmanā.
14. brāhmaṇāḥ ca mahābhāgāḥ deśebhyaḥ samupāgaman
te abhyarcitāḥ rāja-gaṇāḥ drupadena mahā-ātmanā
14. Illustrious Brahmins also arrived from various regions. The assembled groups of kings were honored by the magnanimous (mahātman) Drupada.
ततः पौरजनाः सर्वे सागरोद्धूतनिःस्वनाः ।
शिशुमारपुरं प्राप्य न्यविशंस्ते च पार्थिवाः ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ paurajanāḥ sarve sāgaroddhūtaniḥsvanāḥ ,
śiśumārapuraṁ prāpya nyaviśaṁste ca pārthivāḥ.
15. tataḥ paurajanāḥ sarve sāgaroddhūtanihsvanāḥ
śiśumārapuraṃ prāpya nyaviśan te ca pārthivāḥ
15. Then, all the townspeople, making a roar like the turbulent ocean, along with the kings, reached the city of Śiśumāra and settled there.
प्रागुत्तरेण नगराद्भूमिभागे समे शुभे ।
समाजवाटः शुशुभे भवनैः सर्वतो वृतः ॥१६॥
16. prāguttareṇa nagarādbhūmibhāge same śubhe ,
samājavāṭaḥ śuśubhe bhavanaiḥ sarvato vṛtaḥ.

16. To the northeast of the city, on a level and beautiful plot of land, the assembly ground appeared splendid, enclosed on all sides by buildings.
प्राकारपरिखोपेतो द्वारतोरणमण्डितः ।
वितानेन विचित्रेण सर्वतः समवस्तृतः ॥१७॥
17. prākāraparikhopeto dvāratoraṇamaṇḍitaḥ ,
vitānena vicitreṇa sarvataḥ samavastṛtaḥ.

vitānena vicitreṇa sarvataḥ samavastṛtaḥ
17. It was equipped with ramparts and moats, adorned with gates and ornamental arches, and entirely covered on all sides by a colorful canopy.
तूर्यौघशतसंकीर्णः परार्ध्यागुरुधूपितः ।
चन्दनोदकसिक्तश्च माल्यदामैश्च शोभितः ॥१८॥
18. tūryaughaśatasaṁkīrṇaḥ parārdhyāgurudhūpitaḥ ,
candanodakasiktaśca mālyadāmaiśca śobhitaḥ.
18. tūryaughaśatasaṃkīrṇaḥ parārdhya aguru dhūpitaḥ
candana udaka siktaḥ ca mālyadāmaiḥ ca śobhitaḥ
18. It was resonant with hundreds of musical instruments, fumigated with precious agarwood incense, sprinkled with sandalwood water, and beautified with flower garlands.
कैलासशिखरप्रख्यैर्नभस्तलविलेखिभिः ।
सर्वतः संवृतैर्नद्धः प्रासादैः सुकृतोच्छ्रितैः ॥१९॥
19. kailāsaśikharaprakhyairnabhastalavilekhibhiḥ ,
sarvataḥ saṁvṛtairnaddhaḥ prāsādaiḥ sukṛtocchritaiḥ.
19. kailāsa śikhara prakhyaiḥ nabhas tala vilekhibhiḥ
sarvataḥ saṃvṛtaiḥ naddhaḥ prāsādaiḥ sukṛta ucchritaiḥ
19. It was encompassed on all sides by magnificent, well-constructed palaces that resembled the peaks of Kailāsa and seemed to scrape the very surface of the sky.
सुवर्णजालसंवीतैर्मणिकुट्टिमभूषितैः ।
सुखारोहणसोपानैर्महासनपरिच्छदैः ॥२०॥
20. suvarṇajālasaṁvītairmaṇikuṭṭimabhūṣitaiḥ ,
sukhārohaṇasopānairmahāsanaparicchadaiḥ.
20. suvarṇajālasaṃvītaiḥ maṇikuṭṭimabhūṣitaiḥ
sukhārohaṇasopānaiḥ mahāsanaparicchadaiḥ
20. These aerial palaces were characterized by being covered with golden nets, adorned with floors inlaid with jewels, having easily ascending staircases, and furnished with grand seats.
अग्राम्यसमवच्छन्नैरगुरूत्तमवासितैः ।
हंसाच्छवर्णैर्बहुभिरायोजनसुगन्धिभिः ॥२१॥
21. agrāmyasamavacchannairagurūttamavāsitaiḥ ,
haṁsācchavarṇairbahubhirāyojanasugandhibhiḥ.
21. agrāmyasamavacchannaiḥ agurūttamavāsitaiḥ
haṃsācchavarṇaiḥ bahubhiḥ āyojanasugandhibhiḥ
21. They were also covered with elegant furnishings, perfumed with excellent aloe wood, pure white like swans, and many of them diffused fragrance for a yojana.
असंबाधशतद्वारैः शयनासनशोभितैः ।
बहुधातुपिनद्धाङ्गैर्हिमवच्छिखरैरिव ॥२२॥
22. asaṁbādhaśatadvāraiḥ śayanāsanaśobhitaiḥ ,
bahudhātupinaddhāṅgairhimavacchikharairiva.
22. asaṃbādhaśatadvāraiḥ śayanāsanaśobhitaiḥ
bahudhātupinaddhāṅgaiḥ himavacchikharaiḥ iva
22. These places had hundreds of unobstructed doors, were adorned with beds and seats, and their parts were studded with many minerals, resembling the peaks of the Himalayas.
तत्र नानाप्रकारेषु विमानेषु स्वलंकृताः ।
स्पर्धमानास्तदान्योन्यं निषेदुः सर्वपार्थिवाः ॥२३॥
23. tatra nānāprakāreṣu vimāneṣu svalaṁkṛtāḥ ,
spardhamānāstadānyonyaṁ niṣeduḥ sarvapārthivāḥ.
23. tatra nānāprakāreṣu vimāneṣu svalaṃkṛtāḥ
spardhamānāḥ tadā anyonyam niṣeduḥ sarvapārthivāḥ
23. There, in these well-decorated aerial palaces of various kinds, all the kings, vying with each other, then sat down.
तत्रोपविष्टान्ददृशुर्महासत्त्वपराक्रमान् ।
राजसिंहान्महाभागान्कृष्णागुरुविभूषितान् ॥२४॥
24. tatropaviṣṭāndadṛśurmahāsattvaparākramān ,
rājasiṁhānmahābhāgānkṛṣṇāguruvibhūṣitān.
24. tatra upaviṣṭān dadṛśuḥ mahāsattvaparākramān
rājasiṃhān mahābhāgān kṛṣṇāguruvibhūṣitān
24. There, they saw the seated kings – lion-like rulers, greatly illustrious, endowed with immense valor and might, and adorned with black aloe wood.
महाप्रसादान्ब्रह्मण्यान्स्वराष्ट्रपरिरक्षिणः ।
प्रियान्सर्वस्य लोकस्य सुकृतैः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥२५॥
25. mahāprasādānbrahmaṇyānsvarāṣṭraparirakṣiṇaḥ ,
priyānsarvasya lokasya sukṛtaiḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ.
25. mahāprasādān brahmaṇyān svarāṣṭraparirakṣiṇaḥ
priyān sarvasya lokasya sukṛtaiḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ
25. They were greatly favored, devoted to Brahman, protectors of their own nation, and beloved by all people because of their good and auspicious deeds (karma).
मञ्चेषु च परार्ध्येषु पौरजानपदा जनाः ।
कृष्णादर्शनतुष्ट्यर्थं सर्वतः समुपाविशन् ॥२६॥
26. mañceṣu ca parārdhyeṣu paurajānapadā janāḥ ,
kṛṣṇādarśanatuṣṭyarthaṁ sarvataḥ samupāviśan.
26. mañceṣu ca parārdhyeṣu paurajānapadā janāḥ
kṛṣṇādarśanatuṣṭyartham sarvataḥ samupāviśan
26. And the townspeople and country folk sat down on the excellent platforms from all directions, for the satisfaction of seeing Kṛṣṇa.
ब्राह्मणैस्ते च सहिताः पाण्डवाः समुपाविशन् ।
ऋद्धिं पाञ्चालराजस्य पश्यन्तस्तामनुत्तमाम् ॥२७॥
27. brāhmaṇaiste ca sahitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan ,
ṛddhiṁ pāñcālarājasya paśyantastāmanuttamām.
27. brāhmaṇaiḥ te ca sahitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan
ṛddhim pāñcālarājasya paśyantaḥ tām anuttamām
27. And the Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by Brahmins, sat down, gazing upon the unsurpassed grandeur and prosperity of the Pañcāla king.
ततः समाजो ववृधे स राजन्दिवसान्बहून् ।
रत्नप्रदानबहुलः शोभितो नटनर्तकैः ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ samājo vavṛdhe sa rājandivasānbahūn ,
ratnapradānabahulaḥ śobhito naṭanartakaiḥ.
28. tataḥ samājaḥ vavṛdhe sa rājan divasān bahūn
ratnapradānabahulaḥ śobhitaḥ naṭanartakaiḥ
28. Then, O King, that assembly grew and lasted for many days, rich with the giving of jewels and adorned by actors and dancers.
वर्तमाने समाजे तु रमणीयेऽह्नि षोडशे ।
आप्लुताङ्गी सुवसना सर्वाभरणभूषिता ॥२९॥
29. vartamāne samāje tu ramaṇīye'hni ṣoḍaśe ,
āplutāṅgī suvasanā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā.
29. vartamāne samāje tu ramaṇīye ahni ṣoḍaśe
āplutāṅgī suvasanā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā
29. On the delightful sixteenth day, as the assembly was ongoing, (she appeared) with her body purified by bathing, dressed in fine garments, and adorned with all ornaments.
वीरकांस्यमुपादाय काञ्चनं समलंकृतम् ।
अवतीर्णा ततो रङ्गं द्रौपदी भरतर्षभ ॥३०॥
30. vīrakāṁsyamupādāya kāñcanaṁ samalaṁkṛtam ,
avatīrṇā tato raṅgaṁ draupadī bharatarṣabha.
30. vīrakāṃsyam upādāya kāñcanam samalaṅkṛtam
avatīrṇā tataḥ raṅgam draupadī bharatarṣabha
30. O best among the Bharatas, Draupadi, taking the well-adorned golden hero's bronze vessel, then entered the arena.
पुरोहितः सोमकानां मन्त्रविद्ब्राह्मणः शुचिः ।
परिस्तीर्य जुहावाग्निमाज्येन विधिना तदा ॥३१॥
31. purohitaḥ somakānāṁ mantravidbrāhmaṇaḥ śuciḥ ,
paristīrya juhāvāgnimājyena vidhinā tadā.
31. purohitaḥ somakānām mantravit brāhmaṇaḥ śuciḥ
paristīrya juhāva agnim ājyena vidhinā tadā
31. Then, the pure Brahmin, who was the family priest (purohita) of the Somakas and knowledgeable in sacred verses (mantra), having spread the (sacrificial grass), offered oblations into the fire with clarified butter according to the prescribed ritual (vidhi).
स तर्पयित्वा ज्वलनं ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च ।
वारयामास सर्वाणि वादित्राणि समन्ततः ॥३२॥
32. sa tarpayitvā jvalanaṁ brāhmaṇānsvasti vācya ca ,
vārayāmāsa sarvāṇi vāditrāṇi samantataḥ.
32. sa tarpayitvā jvalanam brāhmaṇān svasti vācya
ca vārayāmāsa sarvāṇi vāditrāṇi samantataḥ
32. He, having propitiated the blazing fire and having caused the Brahmins to utter blessings, then had all the musical instruments silenced from all directions.
निःशब्दे तु कृते तस्मिन्धृष्टद्युम्नो विशां पते ।
रङ्गमध्यगतस्तत्र मेघगम्भीरया गिरा ।
वाक्यमुच्चैर्जगादेदं श्लक्ष्णमर्थवदुत्तमम् ॥३३॥
33. niḥśabde tu kṛte tasmindhṛṣṭadyumno viśāṁ pate ,
raṅgamadhyagatastatra meghagambhīrayā girā ,
vākyamuccairjagādedaṁ ślakṣṇamarthavaduttamam.
33. niḥśabde tu kṛte tasmin dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ
viśām pate raṅgamadhyagataḥ tatra
meghagambhīrayā girā vākyam uccaiḥ
jagāda idam ślakṣṇam arthavat uttamam
33. O lord of the people, when silence was established, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, standing in the middle of the arena, then spoke this articulate, meaningful, and excellent statement (vākya) in a voice as deep as a thundercloud.
इदं धनुर्लक्ष्यमिमे च बाणाः शृण्वन्तु मे पार्थिवाः सर्व एव ।
यन्त्रच्छिद्रेणाभ्यतिक्रम्य लक्ष्यं समर्पयध्वं खगमैर्दशार्धैः ॥३४॥
34. idaṁ dhanurlakṣyamime ca bāṇāḥ; śṛṇvantu me pārthivāḥ sarva eva ,
yantracchidreṇābhyatikramya lakṣyaṁ; samarpayadhvaṁ khagamairdaśārdhaiḥ.
34. idam dhanuḥ lakṣyam ime ca bāṇāḥ
śṛṇvantu me pārthivāḥ sarve eva
yantracchidreṇa abhyatikramya lakṣyam
samarpayadhvam khagamaiḥ daśārdhaiḥ
34. This is the bow, this is the target (lakṣya), and these are the arrows. All you kings (pārthiva), listen to me. Penetrate the target (lakṣya) by passing through the opening of the machine and strike it with these five 'sky-fliers' (khagama).
एतत्कर्ता कर्म सुदुष्करं यः कुलेन रूपेण बलेन युक्तः ।
तस्याद्य भार्या भगिनी ममेयं कृष्णा भवित्री न मृषा ब्रवीमि ॥३५॥
35. etatkartā karma suduṣkaraṁ yaḥ; kulena rūpeṇa balena yuktaḥ ,
tasyādya bhāryā bhaginī mameyaṁ; kṛṣṇā bhavitrī na mṛṣā bravīmi.
35. etatkartā karma sudurṣkaram yaḥ
kulena rūpeṇa balena yuktaḥ
tasya adya bhāryā bhaginī mama iyam
kṛṣṇā bhavitrī na mṛṣā bravīmi
35. Whoever performs this exceedingly difficult deed, endowed with noble lineage, beauty, and strength - for him, this sister of mine, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), will become his wife today. I do not speak falsely.
तानेवमुक्त्वा द्रुपदस्य पुत्रः पश्चादिदं द्रौपदीमभ्युवाच ।
नाम्ना च गोत्रेण च कर्मणा च संकीर्तयंस्तान्नृपतीन्समेतान् ॥३६॥
36. tānevamuktvā drupadasya putraḥ; paścādidaṁ draupadīmabhyuvāca ,
nāmnā ca gotreṇa ca karmaṇā ca; saṁkīrtayaṁstānnṛpatīnsametān.
36. tān evam uktvā drupadāsya putraḥ
paścāt idam draupadīm abhyuvāca
nāmnā ca gotreṇa ca karmaṇā
ca saṃkīrtayan tān nṛpatīn sametān
36. Having spoken thus to them, Drupada's son then addressed Draupadī, mentioning those assembled kings by their names, lineages, and deeds.
