वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गत्वा तु तां भार्गवकर्मशालां पार्थौ पृथां प्राप्य महानुभावौ ।
तां याज्ञसेनीं परमप्रतीतौ भिक्षेत्यथावेदयतां नराग्र्यौ ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gatvā tu tāṁ bhārgavakarmaśālāṁ; pārthau pṛthāṁ prāpya mahānubhāvau ,
tāṁ yājñasenīṁ paramapratītau; bhikṣetyathāvedayatāṁ narāgryau.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca gatvā tu tām
bhārgavakarmaśālām pārthau pṛthām prāpya
mahānubhāvau tām yājñasenīm paramapratītau
bhikṣā iti atha avedayatām nara-agryau
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having gone to that workshop (karmaśālā) of Bhārgava, the two noble (mahānubhāva) Pārthas, after finding Pṛthā, then, being extremely delighted, introduced that Yājñasenī (Draupadī) as 'alms (bhikṣā),' those two foremost among men.
कुटीगता सा त्वनवेक्ष्य पुत्रानुवाच भुङ्क्तेति समेत्य सर्वे ।
पश्चात्तु कुन्ती प्रसमीक्ष्य कन्यां कष्टं मया भाषितमित्युवाच ॥२॥
2. kuṭīgatā sā tvanavekṣya putrā;nuvāca bhuṅkteti sametya sarve ,
paścāttu kuntī prasamīkṣya kanyāṁ; kaṣṭaṁ mayā bhāṣitamityuvāca.
2. kuṭīgatā sā tu anavekṣya putrān
uvāca bhuṅkte iti sametya sarve
paścāt tu kuntī prasamīkṣya kanyām
kaṣṭam mayā bhāṣitam iti uvāca
2. She, being inside the hut, without looking at her sons, said, 'All of you, having gathered, eat!' Afterward, Kuntī, seeing the girl, said, 'Alas, what I have said is distressing (kaṣṭa)!'
साधर्मभीता हि विलज्जमाना तां याज्ञसेनीं परमप्रतीताम् ।
पाणौ गृहीत्वोपजगाम कुन्ती युधिष्ठिरं वाक्यमुवाच चेदम् ॥३॥
3. sādharmabhītā hi vilajjamānā; tāṁ yājñasenīṁ paramapratītām ,
pāṇau gṛhītvopajagāma kuntī; yudhiṣṭhiraṁ vākyamuvāca cedam.
3. sā dharmabhītā hi vilajjamānā
tām yājñasenīm paramapratītām
pāṇau gṛhītvā upajagāma kuntī
yudhiṣṭhiram vākyam uvāca ca idam
3. Indeed, she, afraid of violating (dharma) and feeling greatly ashamed, Kuntī, having taken that exceedingly delighted Yājñasenī (Draupadī) by the hand, approached Yudhiṣṭhira and spoke these words.
इयं हि कन्या द्रुपदस्य राज्ञस्तवानुजाभ्यां मयि संनिसृष्टा ।
यथोचितं पुत्र मयापि चोक्तं समेत्य भुङ्क्तेति नृप प्रमादात् ॥४॥
4. iyaṁ hi kanyā drupadasya rājña;stavānujābhyāṁ mayi saṁnisṛṣṭā ,
yathocitaṁ putra mayāpi coktaṁ; sametya bhuṅkteti nṛpa pramādāt.
4. iyam hi kanyā drupadasya rājñaḥ
tava anujābhyām mayi saṃnisṛṣṭā
yathā ucitaṃ putra mayā api ca uktaṃ
sametya bhuṅkte iti nṛpa pramādāt
4. Indeed, this daughter of King Drupada was entrusted to me by your two younger brothers. O son, I also, due to an oversight, said (to you), 'Assemble and partake,' O King, just as is customary (when alms are brought).
कथं मया नानृतमुक्तमद्य भवेत्कुरूणामृषभ ब्रवीहि ।
पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतामधर्मो न चोपवर्तेत नभूतपूर्वः ॥५॥
5. kathaṁ mayā nānṛtamuktamadya; bhavetkurūṇāmṛṣabha bravīhi ,
pāñcālarājasya sutāmadharmo; na copavarteta nabhūtapūrvaḥ.
5. kathaṃ mayā na anṛtaṃ uktaṃ adya
bhavet kurūṇām ṛṣabha bravīhi
pāñcālarājasya sutām adharmaḥ
na ca upavarteta na bhūtapūrvaḥ
5. O best among the Kurus (Kuru), tell me, how can I avoid having spoken an untruth today? And let no unprecedented act of unrighteousness (adharma) befall the daughter of the Pañcāla king.
मुहूर्तमात्रं त्वनुचिन्त्य राजा युधिष्ठिरो मातरमुत्तमौजाः ।
कुन्तीं समाश्वास्य कुरुप्रवीरो धनंजयं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे ॥६॥
6. muhūrtamātraṁ tvanucintya rājā; yudhiṣṭhiro mātaramuttamaujāḥ ,
kuntīṁ samāśvāsya kurupravīro; dhanaṁjayaṁ vākyamidaṁ babhāṣe.
6. muhūrtamātraṃ tu anucintya rājā
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ mātaraṃ uttamaujāḥ
kuntīṃ samāśvāsya kurupravīraḥ
dhanaṃjayaṃ vākyaṃ idaṃ babhāṣe
6. However, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the greatly energetic one, having pondered for just a moment, consoled his mother Kunti. Then, that foremost hero of the Kurus (Kuru) spoke these words to Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna).
त्वया जिता पाण्डव याज्ञसेनी त्वया च तोषिष्यति राजपुत्री ।
प्रज्वाल्यतां हूयतां चापि वह्निर्गृहाण पाणिं विधिवत्त्वमस्याः ॥७॥
7. tvayā jitā pāṇḍava yājñasenī; tvayā ca toṣiṣyati rājaputrī ,
prajvālyatāṁ hūyatāṁ cāpi vahni;rgṛhāṇa pāṇiṁ vidhivattvamasyāḥ.
7. tvayā jitā pāṇḍava yājñasenī
tvayā ca toṣiṣyati rājaputrī
prajvālyatām hūyatām ca api vahniḥ
gṛhāṇa pāṇiṃ vidhivat tvaṃ asyāḥ
7. O Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), Yājñasenī (Draupadi) has been won by you. And the princess will be pleased by you. Let the fire be kindled and oblations offered. You, according to proper rites, take her hand.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
मा मां नरेन्द्र त्वमधर्मभाजं कृथा न धर्मो ह्ययमीप्सितोऽन्यैः ।
भवान्निवेश्यः प्रथमं ततोऽयं भीमो महाबाहुरचिन्त्यकर्मा ॥८॥
8. arjuna uvāca ,
mā māṁ narendra tvamadharmabhājaṁ; kṛthā na dharmo hyayamīpsito'nyaiḥ ,
bhavānniveśyaḥ prathamaṁ tato'yaṁ; bhīmo mahābāhuracintyakarmā.
8. arjuna uvāca mā māṃ narendra tvaṃ
adharmabhājaṃ kṛthā na dharmaḥ hi ayaṃ
īpsitaḥ anyaiḥ bhavān niveśyaḥ prathamaṃ
tataḥ ayaṃ bhīmaḥ mahābāhuḥ acintyakarmā
8. Arjuna said: 'O King (narendra), do not make me a partaker of unrighteousness (adharma). Indeed, this course of action is not considered righteous (dharma) by others, nor is it desired. You (Yudhiṣṭhira) should be established (in marriage) first, then this Bhīma of mighty arms and inconceivable deeds.'
अहं ततो नकुलोऽनन्तरं मे माद्रीसुतः सहदेवो जघन्यः ।
वृकोदरोऽहं च यमौ च राजन्नियं च कन्या भवतः स्म सर्वे ॥९॥
9. ahaṁ tato nakulo'nantaraṁ me; mādrīsutaḥ sahadevo jaghanyaḥ ,
vṛkodaro'haṁ ca yamau ca rāja;nniyaṁ ca kanyā bhavataḥ sma sarve.
9. aham tataḥ nakulaḥ anantaram me
mādrīsutaḥ sahadevaḥ jaghanyaḥ |
vṛkodaraḥ aham ca yamau ca rājan
iyam ca kanyā bhavataḥ sma sarve
9. O King, I am Arjuna; then, after me, is Nakula, and Madri's son Sahadeva, the youngest. Bhīma (vṛkodara) and the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva) are also here, along with this maiden. All of us are now yours.
एवंगते यत्करणीयमत्र धर्म्यं यशस्यं कुरु तत्प्रचिन्त्य ।
पाञ्चालराजस्य च यत्प्रियं स्यात्तद्ब्रूहि सर्वे स्म वशे स्थितास्ते ॥१०॥
10. evaṁgate yatkaraṇīyamatra; dharmyaṁ yaśasyaṁ kuru tatpracintya ,
pāñcālarājasya ca yatpriyaṁ syā;ttadbrūhi sarve sma vaśe sthitāste.
10. evaṃgate yat karaṇīyam atra dharmyam
yaśasyam kuru tat pracintya |
pāñcālarājasya ca yat priyam syāt
tat brūhi sarve sma vaśe sthitāḥ te
10. Since things stand this way, please consider what should be done here that is righteous (dharmya) and glorious, and then do it. Also, tell us what would be pleasing to the King of Pañcāla, for all of us are now in your power.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ते दृष्ट्वा तत्र तिष्ठन्तीं सर्वे कृष्णां यशस्विनीम् ।
संप्रेक्ष्यान्योन्यमासीना हृदयैस्तामधारयन् ॥११॥
11. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te dṛṣṭvā tatra tiṣṭhantīṁ sarve kṛṣṇāṁ yaśasvinīm ,
saṁprekṣyānyonyamāsīnā hṛdayaistāmadhārayan.
11. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca | te dṛṣṭvā
tatra tiṣṭhantīm sarve kṛṣṇām
yaśasvinīm | samprekṣya anyonyam
āsīnāḥ hṛdayaiḥ tām adhārayan
11. Vaiśampāyana said: All of them, after seeing the glorious Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) standing there, looked at each other while they were seated and held her in their hearts.
तेषां हि द्रौपदीं दृष्ट्वा सर्वेषाममितौजसाम् ।
संप्रमथ्येन्द्रियग्रामं प्रादुरासीन्मनोभवः ॥१२॥
12. teṣāṁ hi draupadīṁ dṛṣṭvā sarveṣāmamitaujasām ,
saṁpramathyendriyagrāmaṁ prādurāsīnmanobhavaḥ.
12. teṣām hi draupadīm dṛṣṭvā sarveṣām amitaojasām |
sampramathya indriyagrāmam prāduraāsīt manobhavaḥ
12. Indeed, for all of them, the Pandavas, who possessed immeasurable strength, upon seeing Draupadī, the god of love (manobhava) arose, greatly disturbing their array of senses.
काम्यं रूपं हि पाञ्चाल्या विधात्रा विहितं स्वयम् ।
बभूवाधिकमन्याभ्यः सर्वभूतमनोहरम् ॥१३॥
13. kāmyaṁ rūpaṁ hi pāñcālyā vidhātrā vihitaṁ svayam ,
babhūvādhikamanyābhyaḥ sarvabhūtamanoharam.
13. kāmyam rūpam hi pāñcālyāḥ vidhātrā vihitam svayam
| babhūva adhikam anyābhyaḥ sarvabhūtamanoharam
13. Indeed, the desirable form of the princess of Pañcāla (Draupadī) was fashioned by the creator (Vidhātā) himself. It became more exquisite than any other, charming the minds of all beings.
तेषामाकारभावज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
द्वैपायनवचः कृत्स्नं संस्मरन्वै नरर्षभ ॥१४॥
14. teṣāmākārabhāvajñaḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
dvaipāyanavacaḥ kṛtsnaṁ saṁsmaranvai nararṣabha.
14. teṣām ākārabhāvajñaḥ kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
dvaipāyanavacaḥ kṛtsnam saṃsmaran vai nararṣabha
14. Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, who understood their gestures and inner intentions, indeed remembering all the words of Dvaipayana (Vyāsa)—O best among men (Janamejaya)—
अब्रवीत्स हि तान्भ्रातॄन्मिथोभेदभयान्नृपः ।
सर्वेषां द्रौपदी भार्या भविष्यति हि नः शुभा ॥१५॥
15. abravītsa hi tānbhrātṝnmithobhedabhayānnṛpaḥ ,
sarveṣāṁ draupadī bhāryā bhaviṣyati hi naḥ śubhā.
15. abravīt sa hi tān bhrātṝn mithobhedabhayāt nṛpaḥ
sarveṣām draupadī bhāryā bhaviṣyati hi naḥ śubhā
15. And that king (Yudhishthira), fearing internal discord, indeed said to those brothers: 'The auspicious Draupadi will certainly be the wife of all of us.'
