दमयन्त्युवाच ।
गच्छ केशिनि जानीहि क एष रथवाहकः ।
उपविष्टो रथोपस्थे विकृतो ह्रस्वबाहुकः ॥१॥
1. damayantyuvāca ,
gaccha keśini jānīhi ka eṣa rathavāhakaḥ ,
upaviṣṭo rathopasthe vikṛto hrasvabāhukaḥ.

rathavāhakaḥ upaviṣṭaḥ rathopasthe vikṛtaḥ hrasvabāhukaḥ
1. Damayantī said: "Go, Keśinī, and find out who this charioteer is, who is seated in the front part of the chariot, disfigured and with short arms."
अभ्येत्य कुशलं भद्रे मृदुपूर्वं समाहिता ।
पृच्छेथाः पुरुषं ह्येनं यथातत्त्वमनिन्दिते ॥२॥
2. abhyetya kuśalaṁ bhadre mṛdupūrvaṁ samāhitā ,
pṛcchethāḥ puruṣaṁ hyenaṁ yathātattvamanindite.
2. abhyetya kuśalaṃ bhadre mṛdupūrvaṃ samāhitā
pṛcchethāḥ puruṣaṃ hi enaṃ yathātattvam anindite
2. O gentle and blameless one, having approached him with composure and mildness, you should inquire about his well-being truthfully.
अत्र मे महती शङ्का भवेदेष नलो नृपः ।
तथा च मे मनस्तुष्टिर्हृदयस्य च निर्वृतिः ॥३॥
3. atra me mahatī śaṅkā bhavedeṣa nalo nṛpaḥ ,
tathā ca me manastuṣṭirhṛdayasya ca nirvṛtiḥ.
3. atra me mahatī śaṅkā bhavet eṣaḥ nalaḥ nṛpaḥ
tathā ca me manastuṣṭiḥ hṛdayasya ca nirvṛtiḥ
3. I have a great suspicion (śaṅkā) here: this man might be King Nala. And consequently, there is satisfaction in my mind and contentment in my heart.
ब्रूयाश्चैनं कथान्ते त्वं पर्णादवचनं यथा ।
प्रतिवाक्यं च सुश्रोणि बुध्येथास्त्वमनिन्दिते ॥४॥
4. brūyāścainaṁ kathānte tvaṁ parṇādavacanaṁ yathā ,
prativākyaṁ ca suśroṇi budhyethāstvamanindite.
4. brūyāḥ ca enaṃ kathānte tvaṃ parṇādavacanaṃ yathā
prativākyaṃ ca suśroṇi budhyethāḥ tvaṃ anindite
4. And you, O blameless one, should recite to him the words of Parṇāda at the end of the story. And then, O fair-hipped one, you should understand each of his replies.
बृहदश्व उवाच ।
एवं समाहिता गत्वा दूती बाहुकमब्रवीत् ।
दमयन्त्यपि कल्याणी प्रासादस्थान्ववैक्षत ॥५॥
5. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
evaṁ samāhitā gatvā dūtī bāhukamabravīt ,
damayantyapi kalyāṇī prāsādasthānvavaikṣata.
5. bṛhadaśvaḥ uvāca evam samāhitā gatvā dūtī bāhukam
abravīt damayantī api kalyāṇī prāsādasthān anvavaikṣata
5. Bṛhadaśva said: The composed messenger, having thus gone, spoke to Bāhuka. And the beautiful Damayantī, too, observed those in the palace.
केशिन्युवाच ।
स्वागतं ते मनुष्येन्द्र कुशलं ते ब्रवीम्यहम् ।
दमयन्त्या वचः साधु निबोध पुरुषर्षभ ॥६॥
6. keśinyuvāca ,
svāgataṁ te manuṣyendra kuśalaṁ te bravīmyaham ,
damayantyā vacaḥ sādhu nibodha puruṣarṣabha.
6. keśinī uvāca svāgatam te manuṣyendra kuśalam te bravīmi
aham damayantyāḥ vacaḥ sādhu nibodha puruṣarṣabha
6. Keśinī said, "Welcome to you, O lord of men. I convey to you tidings of your welfare. O best among men, please listen carefully to Damayantī's words."
कदा वै प्रस्थिता यूयं किमर्थमिह चागताः ।
तत्त्वं ब्रूहि यथान्यायं वैदर्भी श्रोतुमिच्छति ॥७॥
7. kadā vai prasthitā yūyaṁ kimarthamiha cāgatāḥ ,
tattvaṁ brūhi yathānyāyaṁ vaidarbhī śrotumicchati.
7. kadā vai prasthitāḥ yūyam kimartham iha ca āgatāḥ
tattvam brūhi yathānyāyam vaidarbhī śrotum icchati
7. "When did you all set out, and for what purpose have you come here? Please state the actual situation properly, for Vaidarbhī (Damayantī) wishes to hear."
बाहुक उवाच ।
श्रुतः स्वयंवरो राज्ञा कौसल्येन यशस्विना ।
द्वितीयो दमयन्त्या वै श्वोभूत इति भामिनि ॥८॥
8. bāhuka uvāca ,
śrutaḥ svayaṁvaro rājñā kausalyena yaśasvinā ,
dvitīyo damayantyā vai śvobhūta iti bhāmini.
8. bāhuka uvāca śrutaḥ svayaṃvaraḥ rājñā kausalyena
yaśasvinā dvitīyaḥ damayantyā vai śvaḥ bhūtaḥ iti bhāmini
8. Bāhuka said, "O beautiful one, the renowned king of Kosala heard that a second self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara) for Damayantī is to take place tomorrow."
श्रुत्वा तं प्रस्थितो राजा शतयोजनयायिभिः ।
हयैर्वातजवैर्मुख्यैरहमस्य च सारथिः ॥९॥
9. śrutvā taṁ prasthito rājā śatayojanayāyibhiḥ ,
hayairvātajavairmukhyairahamasya ca sārathiḥ.
9. śrutvā tam prasthitaḥ rājā śatayojanayāyibhiḥ
hayaiḥ vātajavaiḥ mukhyaiḥ aham asya ca sārathiḥ
9. "Having heard that news, the king set out with his principal horses, which are swift as wind and capable of traveling a hundred yojanas in a day; and I am his charioteer."
केशिन्युवाच ।
अथ योऽसौ तृतीयो वः स कुतः कस्य वा पुनः ।
त्वं च कस्य कथं चेदं त्वयि कर्म समाहितम् ॥१०॥
10. keśinyuvāca ,
atha yo'sau tṛtīyo vaḥ sa kutaḥ kasya vā punaḥ ,
tvaṁ ca kasya kathaṁ cedaṁ tvayi karma samāhitam.
10. केशिनि उवाच अथ यः असौ तृतीयः वः स कुतः कस्य वा
पुनः त्वं च कस्य कथं च इदं त्वयि कर्म समाहितम्
10. Keśinī asked: "Now, that third person among you, from where does he come, and whose is he again? And whose are you? And how has this duty (karma) been placed upon you?"
बाहुक उवाच ।
पुण्यश्लोकस्य वै सूतो वार्ष्णेय इति विश्रुतः ।
स नले विद्रुते भद्रे भाङ्गस्वरिमुपस्थितः ॥११॥
11. bāhuka uvāca ,
puṇyaślokasya vai sūto vārṣṇeya iti viśrutaḥ ,
sa nale vidrute bhadre bhāṅgasvarimupasthitaḥ.
11. बाहुक उवाच पुण्यश्लोकस्य वै सूतः वार्ष्णेय इति
विश्रुतः स नले विद्रुते भद्रे भाङ्गस्वरिम् उपस्थितः
11. Bāhuka replied: "O good lady, he is indeed the charioteer of the illustrious Nala, renowned as Vārṣṇeya (Vārṣṇeya). When Nala departed, he resorted to Bhāṅgasvari."
अहमप्यश्वकुशलः सूदत्वे च सुनिष्ठितः ।
ऋतुपर्णेन सारथ्ये भोजने च वृतः स्वयम् ॥१२॥
12. ahamapyaśvakuśalaḥ sūdatve ca suniṣṭhitaḥ ,
ṛtuparṇena sārathye bhojane ca vṛtaḥ svayam.
12. अहम् अपि अश्वकुशलः सूदत्वे च सुनिष्ठितः
ऋतुपर्णेन सारथ्ये भोजने च वृतः स्वयम्
12. "I am also skilled with horses and very well-established in the art of cooking. King Ṛtuparṇa himself chose me for charioteering and for cooking."
केशिन्युवाच ।
अथ जानाति वार्ष्णेयः क्व नु राजा नलो गतः ।
कथंचित्त्वयि वैतेन कथितं स्यात्तु बाहुक ॥१३॥
13. keśinyuvāca ,
atha jānāti vārṣṇeyaḥ kva nu rājā nalo gataḥ ,
kathaṁcittvayi vaitena kathitaṁ syāttu bāhuka.
13. केशिनि उवाच अथ जानाति वार्ष्णेयः क्व नु राजा नलः
गतः कथंचित् त्वयि वै एतेन कथितं स्यात् तु बाहुक
13. Keśinī asked: "Does Vārṣṇeya (Vārṣṇeya) know where King Nala has gone? O Bāhuka, perhaps he might have indeed told you something about it."
बाहुक उवाच ।
इहैव पुत्रौ निक्षिप्य नलस्याशुभकर्मणः ।
गतस्ततो यथाकामं नैष जानाति नैषधम् ॥१४॥
14. bāhuka uvāca ,
ihaiva putrau nikṣipya nalasyāśubhakarmaṇaḥ ,
gatastato yathākāmaṁ naiṣa jānāti naiṣadham.
14. bāhukaḥ uvāca | iha eva putrau nikṣipya nalasya aśubhakarmaṇaḥ
| gataḥ tataḥ yathākāmam na eṣaḥ jānāti naiṣadham
14. Bāhuka said: "Having left the two sons of Nala, who was associated with inauspicious deeds (karma), right here, he then went wherever he pleased. This (Bāhuka) does not know Nala, the king of Niṣadha."
न चान्यः पुरुषः कश्चिन्नलं वेत्ति यशस्विनि ।
गूढश्चरति लोकेऽस्मिन्नष्टरूपो महीपतिः ॥१५॥
15. na cānyaḥ puruṣaḥ kaścinnalaṁ vetti yaśasvini ,
gūḍhaścarati loke'sminnaṣṭarūpo mahīpatiḥ.
15. na ca anyaḥ puruṣaḥ kaścit nalam vetti yaśasvini
| gūḍhaḥ carati loke asmin naṣṭarūpaḥ mahīpatiḥ
15. And no other person (puruṣa) knows Nala, O glorious one. The king, whose form is disguised, wanders hidden in this world.
आत्मैव हि नलं वेत्ति या चास्य तदनन्तरा ।
न हि वै तानि लिङ्गानि नलं शंसन्ति कर्हिचित् ॥१६॥
16. ātmaiva hi nalaṁ vetti yā cāsya tadanantarā ,
na hi vai tāni liṅgāni nalaṁ śaṁsanti karhicit.
16. ātmā eva hi nalam vetti yā ca asya tat anantarā
| na hi vai tāni liṅgāni nalam śaṃsanti karhicit
16. Indeed, only his own self (ātman) knows Nala, and she who is immediately next to him. For surely, those identifying marks never reveal Nala.
केशिन्युवाच ।
योऽसावयोध्यां प्रथमं गतवान्ब्राह्मणस्तदा ।
इमानि नारीवाक्यानि कथयानः पुनः पुनः ॥१७॥
17. keśinyuvāca ,
yo'sāvayodhyāṁ prathamaṁ gatavānbrāhmaṇastadā ,
imāni nārīvākyāni kathayānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ.
17. keśini uvāca | yaḥ asau ayodhyām prathamam gatavān
brāhmaṇaḥ tadā | imāni nārīvākyāni kathayānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ
17. Keśinī said: "The Brahmin who first went to Ayodhyā at that time, repeatedly spoke these words, which were a woman's message."
क्व नु त्वं कितव छित्त्वा वस्त्रार्धं प्रस्थितो मम ।
उत्सृज्य विपिने सुप्तामनुरक्तां प्रियां प्रिय ॥१८॥
18. kva nu tvaṁ kitava chittvā vastrārdhaṁ prasthito mama ,
utsṛjya vipine suptāmanuraktāṁ priyāṁ priya.
18. kva nu tvam kitava chittvā vastra-ardham prasthitaḥ
mama utsṛjya vipine suptām anuraktām priyām priya
18. O dear one, where indeed are you, you deceiver? You departed after tearing off half of my garment, abandoning your devoted beloved who was sleeping in the forest.
सा वै यथा समादिष्टा तत्रास्ते त्वत्प्रतीक्षिणी ।
दह्यमाना दिवारात्रं वस्त्रार्धेनाभिसंवृता ॥१९॥
19. sā vai yathā samādiṣṭā tatrāste tvatpratīkṣiṇī ,
dahyamānā divārātraṁ vastrārdhenābhisaṁvṛtā.
19. sā vai yathā samādiṣṭā tatra āste tvat-pratīkṣiṇī
dahyamānā divā-rātraṁ vastra-ardhena abhisamvṛtā
19. Indeed, she remains there just as she was instructed, waiting for you, burning (with separation) day and night, covered only by half of the garment.
तस्या रुदन्त्याः सततं तेन दुःखेन पार्थिव ।
प्रसादं कुरु वै वीर प्रतिवाक्यं प्रयच्छ च ॥२०॥
20. tasyā rudantyāḥ satataṁ tena duḥkhena pārthiva ,
prasādaṁ kuru vai vīra prativākyaṁ prayaccha ca.
20. tasyā rudantyāḥ satatam tena duḥkhena pārthiva
prasādam kuru vai vīra prativākyam prayaccha ca
20. O king (pārthiva), O hero, please show favor to her who is constantly weeping due to that suffering, and give her a reply.
तस्यास्तत्प्रियमाख्यानं प्रब्रवीहि महामते ।
तदेव वाक्यं वैदर्भी श्रोतुमिच्छत्यनिन्दिता ॥२१॥
21. tasyāstatpriyamākhyānaṁ prabravīhi mahāmate ,
tadeva vākyaṁ vaidarbhī śrotumicchatyaninditā.
21. tasyāḥ tat priyam ākhyānam prabravīhi mahā-mate
tat eva vākyam vaidarbhī śrotum icchati aninditā
21. O wise one, relate that dear account to her. The blameless Vaidarbhī wishes to hear that very message.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा प्रतिवचस्तस्य दत्तं त्वया किल ।
यत्पुरा तत्पुनस्त्वत्तो वैदर्भी श्रोतुमिच्छति ॥२२॥
22. etacchrutvā prativacastasya dattaṁ tvayā kila ,
yatpurā tatpunastvatto vaidarbhī śrotumicchati.
22. etat śrutvā prativacas tasya dattam tvayā kila yat
purā tat punas tvattaḥ vaidarbhī śrotum icchati
22. Having heard this reply, which you previously gave to him, the princess of Vidarbha (Damayantī) now wishes to hear that very message again from you.
बृहदश्व उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्य केशिन्या नलस्य कुरुनन्दन ।
हृदयं व्यथितं चासीदश्रुपूर्णे च लोचने ॥२३॥
23. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
evamuktasya keśinyā nalasya kurunandana ,
hṛdayaṁ vyathitaṁ cāsīdaśrupūrṇe ca locane.
23. bṛhadaśva uvāca evam uktasya keśinyā nalasya kurunandana
hṛdayam vyathitam ca āsīt aśrupūrṇe ca locane
23. Bṛhadaśva said: 'O joy of the Kurus (Yudhiṣṭhira), when Nala was addressed in this manner by Keśinī, his heart became greatly distressed, and his eyes were filled with tears.'
स निगृह्यात्मनो दुःखं दह्यमानो महीपतिः ।
बाष्पसंदिग्धया वाचा पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. sa nigṛhyātmano duḥkhaṁ dahyamāno mahīpatiḥ ,
bāṣpasaṁdigdhayā vācā punarevedamabravīt.
24. saḥ nigṛhya ātmanaḥ duḥkham dahyamānaḥ mahīpatiḥ
bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā vācā punar eva idam abravīt
24. That king, burning (with anguish), controlling the sorrow of his own self (ātman), then spoke this again with a voice choked with tears.
वैषम्यमपि संप्राप्ता गोपायन्ति कुलस्त्रियः ।
आत्मानमात्मना सत्यो जितस्वर्गा न संशयः ॥२५॥
25. vaiṣamyamapi saṁprāptā gopāyanti kulastriyaḥ ,
ātmānamātmanā satyo jitasvargā na saṁśayaḥ.
25. vaiṣamyam api samprāptāḥ gopāyanti kulastriyaḥ
ātmānam ātmanā satyaḥ jitasvargāḥ na saṃśayaḥ
25. Even when they encounter misfortune, noble women (kulastrīyaḥ) protect their own self (ātman) by their own self (ātman). Being truthful, they have certainly conquered heaven; there is no doubt.
रहिता भर्तृभिश्चैव न क्रुध्यन्ति कदाचन ।
प्राणांश्चारित्रकवचा धारयन्तीह सत्स्त्रियः ॥२६॥
26. rahitā bhartṛbhiścaiva na krudhyanti kadācana ,
prāṇāṁścāritrakavacā dhārayantīha satstriyaḥ.
26. rahitā bhartṛbhiḥ ca eva na krudhyanti kadācana
prāṇān cāritrakavacāḥ dhārayanti iha satstriyaḥ
26. Here in this world, virtuous women (satstriyaḥ), whose character (cāritra) is their armor, sustain their lives, and they never become angry, even when abandoned by their husbands.
प्राणयात्रां परिप्रेप्सोः शकुनैर्हृतवाससः ।
आधिभिर्दह्यमानस्य श्यामा न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥२७॥
27. prāṇayātrāṁ pariprepsoḥ śakunairhṛtavāsasaḥ ,
ādhibhirdahyamānasya śyāmā na kroddhumarhati.
27. prāṇayātrām pariprepsoḥ śakunaiḥ hṛtavāsasaḥ
ādhibhiḥ dahyamānasya śyāmā na kroddhum arhati
27. Shyama (Damayanti) should not be angry with someone who is striving to sustain his life (prāṇayātrā), whose clothes have been carried away by birds, and who is tormented by mental anguish.
सत्कृतासत्कृता वापि पतिं दृष्ट्वा तथागतम् ।
भ्रष्टराज्यं श्रिया हीनं क्षुधितं व्यसनाप्लुतम् ॥२८॥
28. satkṛtāsatkṛtā vāpi patiṁ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam ,
bhraṣṭarājyaṁ śriyā hīnaṁ kṣudhitaṁ vyasanāplutam.
28. satkṛtāsatkṛtā vā api patim dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam
bhraṣṭarājyam śriyā hīnam kṣudhitam vyasanāplutam
28. Whether she is honored or dishonored, having seen her husband in such a state—his kingdom lost, deprived of splendor, hungry, and overwhelmed by calamity—
एवं ब्रुवाणस्तद्वाक्यं नलः परमदुःखितः ।
न बाष्पमशकत्सोढुं प्ररुरोद च भारत ॥२९॥
29. evaṁ bruvāṇastadvākyaṁ nalaḥ paramaduḥkhitaḥ ,
na bāṣpamaśakatsoḍhuṁ praruroda ca bhārata.
29. evam bruvāṇaḥ tat vākyam nalaḥ paramaduhkhitaḥ
na bāṣpam aśakat soḍhum praruroda ca bhārata
29. O Bhārata, speaking those words, Nala, who was greatly afflicted with sorrow, could not restrain his tears and wept.
ततः सा केशिनी गत्वा दमयन्त्यै न्यवेदयत् ।
तत्सर्वं कथितं चैव विकारं चैव तस्य तम् ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ sā keśinī gatvā damayantyai nyavedayat ,
tatsarvaṁ kathitaṁ caiva vikāraṁ caiva tasya tam.
30. tataḥ sā keśinī gatvā damayantyai nyavedayat tat
sarvam kathitam ca eva vikāram ca eva tasya tam
30. Then Keśinī, having gone to Damayantī, reported all that had been said and his transformed state.
