वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा तु गान्धारी युधिष्ठिरमपृच्छत ।
क्व स राजेति सक्रोधा पुत्रपौत्रवधार्दिता ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā tu gāndhārī yudhiṣṭhiramapṛcchata ,
kva sa rājeti sakrodhā putrapautravadhārditā.

1. Vaishampayana said: "Having spoken thus, Gandhari, enraged and tormented by the slaughter of her sons and grandsons, asked Yudhishthira, 'Where is that king?'"
तामभ्यगच्छद्राजेन्द्रो वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिः ।
युधिष्ठिर इदं चैनां मधुरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. tāmabhyagacchadrājendro vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhira idaṁ caināṁ madhuraṁ vākyamabravīt.
2. tām abhyagacchat rājendraḥ vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ idam ca enām madhuram vākyam abravīt

2. The king (rājendraḥ) Yudhishthira, trembling and with folded hands, approached her. Yudhishthira then spoke these gentle words to her.
पुत्रहन्ता नृशंसोऽहं तव देवि युधिष्ठिरः ।
शापार्हः पृथिवीनाशे हेतुभूतः शपस्व माम् ॥३॥
3. putrahantā nṛśaṁso'haṁ tava devi yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
śāpārhaḥ pṛthivīnāśe hetubhūtaḥ śapasva mām.
3. putrahantā nṛśaṃsaḥ aham tava devi yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
śāpārhaḥ pṛthivīnāśe hetubhūtaḥ śapasva mām
3. aham yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tava putrahantā nṛśaṃsaḥ devi

3. O goddess (devi), I am Yudhishthira, the cruel slayer of your sons. I am deserving of a curse, having been the cause of this earth's destruction. Therefore, curse me!
न हि मे जीवितेनार्थो न राज्येन धनेन वा ।
तादृशान्सुहृदो हत्वा मूढस्यास्य सुहृद्द्रुहः ॥४॥
4. na hi me jīvitenārtho na rājyena dhanena vā ,
tādṛśānsuhṛdo hatvā mūḍhasyāsya suhṛddruhaḥ.
4. na hi me jīvitena arthaḥ na rājyena dhanena vā
tādṛśān suhṛdaḥ hatvā mūḍhasya asya suhṛddruhaḥ
4. hi me jīvitena arthaḥ na rājyena na dhanena vā
tādṛśān suhṛdaḥ hatvā asya mūḍhasya suhṛddruhaḥ
4. Indeed, for me, this foolish betrayer of friends, there is no purpose in life, nor in a kingdom, or in wealth, after having killed such dear friends.
तमेवंवादिनं भीतं संनिकर्षगतं तदा ।
नोवाच किंचिद्गान्धारी निःश्वासपरमा भृशम् ॥५॥
5. tamevaṁvādinaṁ bhītaṁ saṁnikarṣagataṁ tadā ,
novāca kiṁcidgāndhārī niḥśvāsaparamā bhṛśam.
5. tam evaṃvādinaṃ bhītam saṃnikarṣagatam tadā na
uvāca kiṃcit gāndhārī niḥśvāsaparamā bhṛśam
5. tadā niḥśvāsaparamā bhṛśam gāndhārī tam
evaṃvādinaṃ bhītam saṃnikarṣagatam kiṃcit na uvāca
5. Then, Gandhari, deeply filled with sighs, said nothing to him, who was speaking in this manner, frightened, and standing so near.
तस्यावनतदेहस्य पादयोर्निपतिष्यतः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य नृपतेर्धर्मज्ञा धर्मदर्शिनी ।
अङ्गुल्यग्राणि ददृशे देवी पट्टान्तरेण सा ॥६॥
6. tasyāvanatadehasya pādayornipatiṣyataḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya nṛpaterdharmajñā dharmadarśinī ,
aṅgulyagrāṇi dadṛśe devī paṭṭāntareṇa sā.
6. tasya avanatadehasya pādayoḥ
nipatiṣyataḥ yudhiṣṭhirasya nṛpateḥ
dharmajñā dharmadarśinī aṅgulyagrāṇi
dadṛśe devī paṭṭāntareṇa sā
6. sā devī dharmajñā dharmadarśinī
tasya avanatadehasya nṛpateḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya pādayoḥ nipatiṣyataḥ
paṭṭāntareṇa aṅgulyagrāṇi dadṛśe
6. As that King Yudhishthira, whose body was bowed, was about to fall at her feet, she, the queen (devī), who knew and perceived the natural law (dharma), saw his fingertips through her bandage.
ततः स कुनखीभूतो दर्शनीयनखो नृपः ।
तं दृष्ट्वा चार्जुनोऽगच्छद्वासुदेवस्य पृष्ठतः ॥७॥
7. tataḥ sa kunakhībhūto darśanīyanakho nṛpaḥ ,
taṁ dṛṣṭvā cārjuno'gacchadvāsudevasya pṛṣṭhataḥ.
7. tataḥ saḥ kunakhībhūtaḥ darśanīyanakhaḥ nṛpaḥ tam
dṛṣṭvā ca arjunaḥ agacchat vāsudevasya pṛṣṭhataḥ
7. tataḥ saḥ nṛpaḥ darśanīyanakhaḥ kunakhībhūtaḥ
arjunaḥ ca tam dṛṣṭvā vāsudevasya pṛṣṭhataḥ agacchat
7. Then that king (Yudhishthira), whose once beautiful nails had become disfigured, and seeing him (the king in that state), Arjuna went behind Vasudeva (Krishna).
एवं संचेष्टमानांस्तानितश्चेतश्च भारत ।
गान्धारी विगतक्रोधा सान्त्वयामास मातृवत् ॥८॥
8. evaṁ saṁceṣṭamānāṁstānitaścetaśca bhārata ,
gāndhārī vigatakrodhā sāntvayāmāsa mātṛvat.
8. evam saṃceṣṭamānān tān itaś cetaś ca bhārata
gāndhārī vigatakrodhā sāntvayāmāsa mātṛvat
8. bhārata vigatakrodhā gāndhārī evam itaś cetaś
ca saṃceṣṭamānān tān mātṛvat sāntvayāmāsa
8. O Bharata, Gandhari, her anger having departed, consoled them, who were struggling here and there, just like a mother.
तया ते समनुज्ञाता मातरं वीरमातरम् ।
अभ्यगच्छन्त सहिताः पृथां पृथुलवक्षसः ॥९॥
9. tayā te samanujñātā mātaraṁ vīramātaram ,
abhyagacchanta sahitāḥ pṛthāṁ pṛthulavakṣasaḥ.
9. tayā te samanujñātāḥ mātaram vīramātaram
abhyagacchanta sahitāḥ pṛthām pṛthulavakṣasaḥ
9. tayā samanujñātāḥ pṛthulavakṣasaḥ te sahitāḥ

9. Having been permitted by her (Gandhari), they, the broad-chested ones, together approached their mother, Pritha (Kunti), the mother of heroes.
चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा पुत्रान्सा पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुता ।
बाष्पमाहारयद्देवी वस्त्रेणावृत्य वै मुखम् ॥१०॥
10. cirasya dṛṣṭvā putrānsā putrādhibhirabhiplutā ,
bāṣpamāhārayaddevī vastreṇāvṛtya vai mukham.
10. cirasya dṛṣṭvā putrān sā putrādhībhiḥ abhiplutā
bāṣpam āhārayat devī vastreṇa āvṛtya vai mukham
10. sā devī cirasya putrān dṛṣṭvā putrādhībhiḥ
abhiplutā vai vastreṇa mukham āvṛtya bāṣpam āhārayat
10. Having seen her sons after a long time, she, the queen, overwhelmed by the distress concerning her sons, produced tears, indeed covering her face with her garment.
ततो बाष्पं समुत्सृज्य सह पुत्रैस्तथा पृथा ।
अपश्यदेताञ्शस्त्रौघैर्बहुधा परिविक्षतान् ॥११॥
11. tato bāṣpaṁ samutsṛjya saha putraistathā pṛthā ,
apaśyadetāñśastraughairbahudhā parivikṣatān.
11. tataḥ bāṣpam samutsṛjya saha putraiḥ tathā pṛthā
apaśyat etān śastraughaiḥ bahudhā parivikṣatān
11. tataḥ pṛthā tathā putraiḥ saha bāṣpam samutsṛjya
etān śastraughaiḥ bahudhā parivikṣatān apaśyat
11. Then, after shedding tears with her sons, Pritha also saw them severely wounded in many places by weapon attacks.
सा तानेकैकशः पुत्रान्संस्पृशन्ती पुनः पुनः ।
अन्वशोचन्त दुःखार्ता द्रौपदीं च हतात्मजाम् ।
रुदतीमथ पाञ्चालीं ददर्श पतितां भुवि ॥१२॥
12. sā tānekaikaśaḥ putrānsaṁspṛśantī punaḥ punaḥ ,
anvaśocanta duḥkhārtā draupadīṁ ca hatātmajām ,
rudatīmatha pāñcālīṁ dadarśa patitāṁ bhuvi.
12. sā tān ekaikaśaḥ putrān saṃspṛśantī
punaḥ punaḥ anvaśocanta duḥkhārtā
draupadīm ca hatātmajām rudatīm
atha pāñcālīm dadarśa patitām bhuvi
12. sā duḥkhārtā ekaikaśaḥ putrān tān
punaḥ punaḥ saṃspṛśantī anvaśocanta
ca hatātmajām draupadīm atha bhuvi
patitām rudatīm pāñcālīm dadarśa
12. She, afflicted by sorrow, repeatedly touching her sons one by one again and again, grieved for them and for Draupadi, whose children were slain. Then she saw Panchali, weeping and fallen on the ground.
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
आर्ये पौत्राः क्व ते सर्वे सौभद्रसहिता गताः ।
न त्वां तेऽद्याभिगच्छन्ति चिरदृष्टां तपस्विनीम् ।
किं नु राज्येन वै कार्यं विहीनायाः सुतैर्मम ॥१३॥
13. draupadyuvāca ,
ārye pautrāḥ kva te sarve saubhadrasahitā gatāḥ ,
na tvāṁ te'dyābhigacchanti ciradṛṣṭāṁ tapasvinīm ,
kiṁ nu rājyena vai kāryaṁ vihīnāyāḥ sutairmama.
13. draupadī uvāca ārye pautrāḥ kva te sarve
saubhadrasahitāḥ gatāḥ na tvām te adya
abhigacchanti ciradṛṣṭām tapasvinīm kim
nu rājyena vai kāryam vihīnāyāḥ sutaiḥ mama
13. draupadī uvāca ārye,
te sarve saubhadrasahitāḥ pautrāḥ kva gatāḥ? adya te ciradṛṣṭām tapasvinīm tvām na abhigacchanti sutaiḥ vihīnāyāḥ mama rājyena vai kim nu kāryam?
13. Draupadi said: "O venerable lady! Where have all your grandsons, including Saubhadra, gone? They do not approach you now, after having been seen for a long time, and you are a suffering woman. What indeed is the purpose of a kingdom for me, who am deprived of my sons?"
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तां समाश्वासयामास पृथा पृथुललोचना ।
उत्थाप्य याज्ञसेनीं तु रुदतीं शोककर्शिताम् ॥१४॥
14. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tāṁ samāśvāsayāmāsa pṛthā pṛthulalocanā ,
utthāpya yājñasenīṁ tu rudatīṁ śokakarśitām.
14. vaiśampāyana uvāca tām samāśvāsayāmāsa pṛthā
pṛthulalocanā utthāpya yājñasenīm tu rudatīm śokakarśitām
14. vaiśampāyana uvāca pṛthā pṛthulalocanā rudatīm
śokakarśitām yājñasenīm tu utthāpya tām samāśvāsayāmāsa
14. Vaiśampāyana said: Wide-eyed Pṛthā, after raising up Yājñasenī, who was weeping and afflicted by sorrow (śoka), then comforted her.
तयैव सहिता चापि पुत्रैरनुगता पृथा ।
अभ्यगच्छत गान्धारीमार्तामार्ततरा स्वयम् ॥१५॥
15. tayaiva sahitā cāpi putrairanugatā pṛthā ,
abhyagacchata gāndhārīmārtāmārtatarā svayam.
15. tayā eva sahitā ca api putraiḥ anugatā pṛthā
abhyagacchata gāndhārīm ārtām ārtatarā svayam
15. pṛthā tayā eva sahitā ca api putraiḥ anugatā
svayam ārtatarā ārtām gāndhārīm abhyagacchata
15. Pṛthā, accompanied by Draupadi and followed by her sons, herself went to meet the distressed Gāndhārī, (Pṛthā being) even more distressed.
तामुवाचाथ गान्धारी सह वध्वा यशस्विनीम् ।
मैवं पुत्रीति शोकार्ता पश्य मामपि दुःखिताम् ॥१६॥
16. tāmuvācātha gāndhārī saha vadhvā yaśasvinīm ,
maivaṁ putrīti śokārtā paśya māmapi duḥkhitām.
16. tām uvāca atha gāndhārī saha vadhvā yaśasvinīm mā
evam putrī iti śokārtā paśya mām api duḥkhitām
16. atha gāndhārī saha yaśasvinīm vadhvā tām uvāca
putrī iti mā evam śokārtā paśya mām api duḥkhitām
16. Then Gāndhārī, accompanied by her glorious daughter-in-law, said to her (Draupadi): "My daughter, do not be so overcome by sorrow (śoka). Look at me; I am also suffering."
मन्ये लोकविनाशोऽयं कालपर्यायचोदितः ।
अवश्यभावी संप्राप्तः स्वभावाल्लोमहर्षणः ॥१७॥
17. manye lokavināśo'yaṁ kālaparyāyacoditaḥ ,
avaśyabhāvī saṁprāptaḥ svabhāvāllomaharṣaṇaḥ.
17. manye lokavināśaḥ ayam kālaparyāyacoditaḥ
avaśyabhāvī samprāptaḥ svabhāvāt lomaharṣaṇaḥ
17. manye ayam lokavināśaḥ kālaparyāyacoditaḥ
avaśyabhāvī svabhāvāt lomaharṣaṇaḥ samprāptaḥ
17. I believe this destruction of the world, impelled by the turning of time (kāla), is inevitable and has come to pass, being hair-raising by its very nature.
इदं तत्समनुप्राप्तं विदुरस्य वचो महत् ।
असिद्धानुनये कृष्णे यदुवाच महामतिः ॥१८॥
18. idaṁ tatsamanuprāptaṁ vidurasya vaco mahat ,
asiddhānunaye kṛṣṇe yaduvāca mahāmatiḥ.
18. idam tat samanuprāptam vidurasya vacaḥ mahat
asiddhānunaye kṛṣṇe yat uvāca mahāmatiḥ
18. mahāmatiḥ vidurasya tat mahat vacaḥ yat
kṛṣṇe asiddhānunaye uvāca idam samanuprāptam
18. Now, that important statement of the great-minded Vidura, which he spoke to Kṛṣṇa when all persuasion failed, has come to pass.
तस्मिन्नपरिहार्येऽर्थे व्यतीते च विशेषतः ।
मा शुचो न हि शोच्यास्ते संग्रामे निधनं गताः ॥१९॥
19. tasminnaparihārye'rthe vyatīte ca viśeṣataḥ ,
mā śuco na hi śocyāste saṁgrāme nidhanaṁ gatāḥ.
19. tasmin aparihārye arthe vyatīte ca viśeṣataḥ mā
śucaḥ na hi śocyāḥ te saṃgrāme nidhanam gatāḥ
19. tasmin aparihārye arthe ca viśeṣataḥ vyatīte (sati) mā śucaḥ.
hi saṃgrāme nidhanam gatāḥ te na śocyāḥ.
19. Do not grieve over that unavoidable matter, which has now especially come to pass. For indeed, those who attained death in battle are not to be lamented.
यथैव त्वं तथैवाहं को वा माश्वासयिष्यति ।
ममैव ह्यपराधेन कुलमग्र्यं विनाशितम् ॥२०॥
20. yathaiva tvaṁ tathaivāhaṁ ko vā māśvāsayiṣyati ,
mamaiva hyaparādhena kulamagryaṁ vināśitam.
20. yathā eva tvam tathā eva aham kaḥ vā mām āśvāsayiṣyati
mama eva hi aparādhena kulam agryam vināśitam
20. tvam yathā eva tathā eva aham (asmi).
kaḥ vā mām āśvāsayiṣyati? hi mama eva aparādhena agryam kulam vināśitam.
20. You are in the same state as I am; so who will console me? For indeed, it is solely due to my offense that this foremost family has been destroyed.
