जनमेजय उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा कर्णं हतं युद्धे पुत्रांश्चैवापलायिनः ।
नरेन्द्रः किंचिदाश्वस्तो द्विजश्रेष्ठ किमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,

1. Janamejaya asked: "O best among the twice-born (dvija), after hearing that Karna was killed in battle and that his sons did not flee, what did that king, somewhat consoled, then say?"
प्राप्तवान्परमं दुःखं पुत्रव्यसनजं महत् ।
तस्मिन्यदुक्तवान्काले तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ॥२॥
2. prāptavānparamaṁ duḥkhaṁ putravyasanajaṁ mahat ,
tasminyaduktavānkāle tanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ.

2. (He, Dhṛtarāṣṭra) had experienced supreme sorrow, a great distress born from the misfortune of his sons. Please tell me, who am asking, what he said at that particular time.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा कर्णस्य निधनमश्रद्धेयमिवाद्भुतम् ।
भूतसंमोहनं भीमं मेरोः पर्यसनं यथा ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā karṇasya nidhanamaśraddheyamivādbhutam ,
bhūtasaṁmohanaṁ bhīmaṁ meroḥ paryasanaṁ yathā.

3. Vaiśampāyana said: "Upon hearing of Karna's death – which was astonishing, almost unbelievable, terrifying, like a great delusion falling upon all beings, or indeed, like the overturning of Mount Meru itself – (Dhṛtarāṣṭra reacted in a certain way)."
चित्तमोहमिवायुक्तं भार्गवस्य महामतेः ।
पराजयमिवेन्द्रस्य द्विषद्भ्यो भीमकर्मणः ॥४॥
4. cittamohamivāyuktaṁ bhārgavasya mahāmateḥ ,
parājayamivendrasya dviṣadbhyo bhīmakarmaṇaḥ.
4. cittamoham iva ayuktam bhārgavasya mahāmateḥ |
parājayam iva indrasya dviṣadbhyaḥ bhīmakarmaṇaḥ
4. bhārgavasya mahāmateḥ ayuktam cittamoham iva indrasya
bhīmakarmaṇaḥ dviṣadbhyaḥ parājayam iva (āsīt)
4. (It was like) an inexplicable bewilderment of mind for the great-minded (mahāmate) Bhārgava (Paraśurāma), or like the defeat of Indra at the hands of his formidable enemies (dviṣat) who perform terrible deeds (bhīmakarman).
दिवः प्रपतनं भानोरुर्व्यामिव महाद्युतेः ।
संशोषणमिवाचिन्त्यं समुद्रस्याक्षयाम्भसः ॥५॥
5. divaḥ prapatanaṁ bhānorurvyāmiva mahādyuteḥ ,
saṁśoṣaṇamivācintyaṁ samudrasyākṣayāmbhasaḥ.
5. divaḥ prapatanam bhānoḥ urvyām iva mahādyuteḥ |
saṃśoṣaṇam iva acintyam samudrasya akṣayāmbhasaḥ
5. bhānoḥ mahādyuteḥ divaḥ urvyām prapatanam iva

5. Like the falling of the greatly radiant sun from the sky onto the earth; or like the inconceivable complete drying up of the ocean whose waters are inexhaustible.
महीवियद्दिगीशानां सर्वनाशमिवाद्भुतम् ।
कर्मणोरिव वैफल्यमुभयोः पुण्यपापयोः ॥६॥
6. mahīviyaddigīśānāṁ sarvanāśamivādbhutam ,
karmaṇoriva vaiphalyamubhayoḥ puṇyapāpayoḥ.
6. mahīviyaddigīśānām sarvanāśam iva adbhutam |
karmaṇoḥ iva vaiphalyam ubhayoḥ puṇyapāpayoḥ
6. mahīviyaddigīśānām adbhutam sarvanāśam iva

6. Or like the astounding complete destruction of the earth, sky, and the guardians of the directions; or like the utter fruitlessness of both merit (puṇya) and demerit (pāpa).
संचिन्त्य निपुणं बुद्ध्या धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ।
नेदमस्तीति संचिन्त्य कर्णस्य निधनं प्रति ॥७॥
7. saṁcintya nipuṇaṁ buddhyā dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ ,
nedamastīti saṁcintya karṇasya nidhanaṁ prati.
7. saṃcintya nipuṇam buddhyā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ janeśvaraḥ |
na idam asti iti saṃcintya karṇasya nidhanam prati
7. janeswarah dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ buddhyā nipuṇam saṃcintya

7. King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the ruler of men, having thoroughly reflected with his intellect (buddhi), and having considered that 'this cannot be' regarding Karṇa's death...
प्राणिनामेतदात्मत्वात्स्यादपीति विनाशनम् ।
शोकाग्निना दह्यमानो धम्यमान इवाशयः ॥८॥
8. prāṇināmetadātmatvātsyādapīti vināśanam ,
śokāgninā dahyamāno dhamyamāna ivāśayaḥ.
8. prāṇinām etat ātmatvāt syāt api iti vināśanam
| śokāgninā dahyamānaḥ dhamyamānaḥ iva āśayaḥ
8. prāṇinām etat ātmatvāt vināśanam api syāt iti

8. This destruction could even be (understood as) the destruction of the very essence (ātman) of living beings. His inner being (āśaya), scorched by the fire of grief, was as if being fanned (to intensify the flames).
विध्वस्तात्मा श्वसन्दीनो हा हेत्युक्त्वा सुदुःखितः ।
विललाप महाराज धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥९॥
9. vidhvastātmā śvasandīno hā hetyuktvā suduḥkhitaḥ ,
vilalāpa mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ.
9. vidhvastātmā śvasan dīnaḥ hā heti uktvā sudduḥkhitaḥ
vilalāpa mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ambikāsutaḥ
9. mahārāja ambikāsutaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ vidhvastātmā
dīnaḥ śvasan sudduḥkhitaḥ hā heti uktvā vilalāpa
9. O great king, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā, whose self (ātman) was shattered, sighing, wretched, and extremely sorrowful, lamented, having exclaimed "Alas, alas!".
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
संजयाधिरथो वीरः सिंहद्विरदविक्रमः ।
वृषमप्रतिमस्कन्धो वृषभाक्षगतिस्वनः ॥१०॥
10. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
saṁjayādhiratho vīraḥ siṁhadviradavikramaḥ ,
vṛṣamapratimaskandho vṛṣabhākṣagatisvanaḥ.
10. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca saṃjaya adhirathaḥ vīraḥ
siṃhadviradavikramaḥ vṛṣamapratimaskandhaḥ vṛṣabhākṣagatisvanaḥ
10. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca.
saṃjaya,
adhirathaḥ vīraḥ siṃhadviradavikramaḥ vṛṣamapratimaskandhaḥ vṛṣabhākṣagatisvanaḥ
10. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O Sañjaya, the heroic Karna, who possesses the valor of a lion and an elephant, whose shoulders are unequalled like a bull's, and whose gaze, gait, and roar are like that of a bull - "
वृषभो वृषभस्येव यो युद्धे न निवर्तते ।
शत्रोरपि महेन्द्रस्य वज्रसंहननो युवा ॥११॥
11. vṛṣabho vṛṣabhasyeva yo yuddhe na nivartate ,
śatrorapi mahendrasya vajrasaṁhanano yuvā.
11. vṛṣabhaḥ vṛṣabhasya iva yaḥ yuddhe na nivartate
śatroḥ api mahendrasya vajrasaṃhananaḥ yuvā
11. yaḥ vṛṣabhasya iva vṛṣabhaḥ yuddhe na nivartate,
mahendrasya śatroḥ api vajrasaṃhananaḥ yuvā
11. ...who, like a bull among bulls, never retreats in battle, even from a powerful enemy like Mahendra (Indra), a young man whose body (saṃhanana) is as firm as a thunderbolt.
यस्य ज्यातलशब्देन शरवृष्टिरवेण च ।
रथाश्वनरमातङ्गा नावतिष्ठन्ति संयुगे ॥१२॥
12. yasya jyātalaśabdena śaravṛṣṭiraveṇa ca ,
rathāśvanaramātaṅgā nāvatiṣṭhanti saṁyuge.
12. yasya jyātalaśabdena śaravṛṣṭiraveṇa ca
rathāśvanaramātaṅgā na avatiṣṭhanti saṃyuge
12. yasya jyātalaśabdena ca śaravṛṣṭiraveṇa ca
rathāśvanaramātaṅgā saṃyuge na avatiṣṭhanti
12. ...due to whose bowstring's twang and palm-guard's sound, and the roar of his shower of arrows, chariots, horses, men, and elephants do not stand firm in battle.
यमाश्रित्य महाबाहुं द्विषत्संघघ्नमच्युतम् ।
दुर्योधनोऽकरोद्वैरं पाण्डुपुत्रैर्महाबलैः ॥१३॥
13. yamāśritya mahābāhuṁ dviṣatsaṁghaghnamacyutam ,
duryodhano'karodvairaṁ pāṇḍuputrairmahābalaiḥ.
13. yam āśritya mahābāhum dviṣatsaṃghaghnam acyutam
duryodhanaḥ akarot vairam pāṇḍuputraiḥ mahābalaiḥ
13. duryodhanaḥ yam mahābāhum dviṣatsaṃghaghnam acyutam
āśritya mahābalaiḥ pāṇḍuputraiḥ vairam akarot
13. Relying on that mighty-armed (ally), the unfailing one, who was a slayer of enemy hosts, Duryodhana waged war against the immensely powerful sons of Pāṇḍu.
स कथं रथिनां श्रेष्ठः कर्णः पार्थेन संयुगे ।
निहतः पुरुषव्याघ्रः प्रसह्यासह्यविक्रमः ॥१४॥
14. sa kathaṁ rathināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ karṇaḥ pārthena saṁyuge ,
nihataḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ prasahyāsahyavikramaḥ.
14. saḥ katham rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ karṇaḥ pārthena
saṃyuge nihataḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ prasahyāsahyavikramaḥ
14. saḥ rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ prasahyāsahyavikramaḥ
karṇaḥ pārthena saṃyuge katham nihataḥ?
14. How could that Karna, the foremost among charioteers, a tiger among men, whose prowess was irresistibly forceful, be slain in battle by Arjuna (Pārtha)?
यो नामन्यत वै नित्यमच्युतं न धनंजयम् ।
न वृष्णीनपि तानन्यान्स्वबाहुबलमाश्रितः ॥१५॥
15. yo nāmanyata vai nityamacyutaṁ na dhanaṁjayam ,
na vṛṣṇīnapi tānanyānsvabāhubalamāśritaḥ.
15. yaḥ na amanyata vai nityam acyutam na dhanañjayam
na vṛṣṇīn api tān anyān svabāhubalam āśritaḥ
15. yaḥ vai nityam svabāhubalam āśritaḥ,
acyutam na amanyata,
na dhanañjayam,
api tān anyān vṛṣṇīn na amanyata
15. He who, always relying solely on the strength of his own arms, never considered Kṛṣṇa (acyuta) (to be powerful), nor Arjuna (Dhananjaya), nor even those other members of the Vṛṣṇi clan.
शार्ङ्गगाण्डीवधन्वानौ सहितावपराजितौ ।
अहं दिव्याद्रथादेकः पातयिष्यामि संयुगे ॥१६॥
16. śārṅgagāṇḍīvadhanvānau sahitāvaparājitau ,
ahaṁ divyādrathādekaḥ pātayiṣyāmi saṁyuge.
16. śārṅgagāṇḍīvadhanvanau sahitau aparājitau
aham divyāt rathāt ekaḥ pātayiṣyāmi saṃyuge
16. aham ekaḥ saṃyuge divyāt rathāt sahitau
aparājitau śārṅgagāṇḍīvadhanvanau pātayiṣyāmi
16. I alone will fell from their divine chariot both the unconquered wielder of the Śārṅga bow (Kṛṣṇa) and the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna), even when they are united in battle.
इति यः सततं मन्दमवोचल्लोभमोहितम् ।
दुर्योधनमपादीनं राज्यकामुकमातुरम् ॥१७॥
17. iti yaḥ satataṁ mandamavocallobhamohitam ,
duryodhanamapādīnaṁ rājyakāmukamāturam.
17. iti yaḥ satatam mandam avocata lobhamohitam
duryodhanam apādīnam rājyakāmukam āturam
17. yaḥ satatam iti lobhamohitam apādīnam
rājyakāmukam āturam mandam duryodhanam avocata
17. Thus, he who constantly spoke to foolish Duryodhana, who was infatuated by greed, helpless, desirous of the kingdom, and distressed.
यश्चाजैषीदतिबलानमित्रानपि दुर्जयान् ।
गान्धारान्मद्रकान्मत्स्यांस्त्रिगर्तांस्तङ्गणाञ्शकान् ॥१८॥
18. yaścājaiṣīdatibalānamitrānapi durjayān ,
gāndhārānmadrakānmatsyāṁstrigartāṁstaṅgaṇāñśakān.
18. yaḥ ca ajaiṣīt atibalān amitrān api durjayān
gāndhārān madrakān matsyān trigartān taṅgaṇān śakān
18. yaḥ ca atibalān api durjayān amitrān gāndhārān
madrakān matsyān trigartān taṅgaṇān śakān ajaiṣīt
18. And he who conquered even the extremely powerful, unconquerable enemies: the Gandharas, Madras, Matsyas, Trigartas, Tanganas, and Shakas.
पाञ्चालांश्च विदेहांश्च कुणिन्दान्काशिकोसलान् ।
सुह्मानङ्गांश्च पुण्ड्रांश्च निषादान्वङ्गकीचकान् ॥१९॥
19. pāñcālāṁśca videhāṁśca kuṇindānkāśikosalān ,
suhmānaṅgāṁśca puṇḍrāṁśca niṣādānvaṅgakīcakān.
19. pāñcālān ca videhān ca kuṇindān kāśikosalān
suhmān aṅgān ca puṇḍrān ca niṣādān vaṅgakīcakān
19. pāñcālān ca videhān ca kuṇindān kāśikosalān
suhmān aṅgān ca puṇḍrān ca niṣādān vaṅgakīcakān
19. the Panchalas, and the Videhas, the Kunindas, the Kashi-Kusalas, the Suhmas, and the Angas, and the Pundras, the Nishadas, and the Vanga-Kichakas.
वत्सान्कलिङ्गांस्तरलानश्मकानृषिकांस्तथा ।
यो जित्वा समरे वीरश्चक्रे बलिभृतः पुरा ॥२०॥
20. vatsānkaliṅgāṁstaralānaśmakānṛṣikāṁstathā ,
yo jitvā samare vīraścakre balibhṛtaḥ purā.
20. vatsān kaliṅgān taralān aśmakān ṛṣikān tathā
yaḥ jitvā samare vīraḥ cakre balibhṛtaḥ purā
20. vatsān kaliṅgān taralān aśmakān ṛṣikān tathā
yaḥ vīraḥ purā samare jitvā balibhṛtaḥ cakre
20. and the Vatsas, Kalingas, Taralas, Ashmakas, and Rishikas. That hero, having conquered them in battle, formerly made them tribute-bearers.
उच्चैःश्रवा वरोऽश्वानां राज्ञां वैश्रवणो वरः ।
वरो महेन्द्रो देवानां कर्णः प्रहरतां वरः ॥२१॥
21. uccaiḥśravā varo'śvānāṁ rājñāṁ vaiśravaṇo varaḥ ,
varo mahendro devānāṁ karṇaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ.
21. uccaiḥśravā varaḥ aśvānām rājñām vaiśravaṇaḥ varaḥ
| varaḥ mahendraḥ devānām karṇaḥ praharatām varaḥ
21. uccaiḥśravā aśvānām varaḥ; vaiśravaṇaḥ rājñām varaḥ; mahendraḥ devānām varaḥ; karṇaḥ praharatām varaḥ.
21. Uccaiḥśravas is the foremost of horses, Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera) is the foremost of kings, Mahendra (Indra) is the foremost of the gods, and Karṇa is the foremost among warriors.
यं लब्ध्वा मागधो राजा सान्त्वमानार्थगौरवैः ।
अरौत्सीत्पार्थिवं क्षत्रमृते कौरवयादवान् ॥२२॥
22. yaṁ labdhvā māgadho rājā sāntvamānārthagauravaiḥ ,
arautsītpārthivaṁ kṣatramṛte kauravayādavān.
22. yam labdhvā māgadhaḥ rājā sāntvamānārthagauravaiḥ
| arautsīt pārthivaṃ kṣatram ṛte kauravayādavān
22. māgadhaḥ rājā yam labdhvā sāntvamānārthagauravaiḥ kauravayādavān ṛte pārthivaṃ kṣatram arautsīt.
22. Having obtained him (Karṇa) with conciliatory words, honor, and generous gifts (artha-gauravaiḥ), the king of Magadha (Jarāsandha) had confined the royal warrior class, with the sole exception of the Kauravas and Yadavas.
तं श्रुत्वा निहतं कर्णं द्वैरथे सव्यसाचिना ।
शोकार्णवे निमग्नोऽहमप्लवः सागरे यथा ॥२३॥
23. taṁ śrutvā nihataṁ karṇaṁ dvairathe savyasācinā ,
śokārṇave nimagno'hamaplavaḥ sāgare yathā.
23. tam śrutvā nihataṃ karṇaṃ dvairathe savyasācinā
| śokārṇave nimagnaḥ aham aplavaḥ sāgare yathā
23. tam karṇaṃ savyasācinā dvairathe nihatam śrutvā,
aham aplavaḥ sāgare yathā śokārṇave nimagnaḥ (asmi).
23. Upon hearing that Karṇa was killed in a duel (dvairathe) by Savyasācin (Arjuna), I became immersed in an ocean of grief, like someone without a boat in the vast sea.
ईदृशैर्यद्यहं दुःखैर्न विनश्यामि संजय ।
वज्राद्दृढतरं मन्ये हृदयं मम दुर्भिदम् ॥२४॥
24. īdṛśairyadyahaṁ duḥkhairna vinaśyāmi saṁjaya ,
vajrāddṛḍhataraṁ manye hṛdayaṁ mama durbhidam.
24. īdṛśaiḥ yadi aham duḥkhaiḥ na vinaśyāmi sañjaya
| vajrāt dṛḍhataraṃ manye hṛdayaṃ mama durbhidam
24. sañjaya,
yadi aham īdṛśaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ na vinaśyāmi,
(tadā) mama hṛdayaṃ vajrāt dṛḍhataram durbhidam (iti) manye.
24. O Sañjaya, if I am not destroyed by such sorrows, then I consider my heart to be harder than a thunderbolt and indeed unbreakable.
ज्ञातिसंबन्धिमित्राणामिमं श्रुत्वा पराजयम् ।
को मदन्यः पुमाँल्लोके न जह्यात्सूत जीवितम् ॥२५॥
25. jñātisaṁbandhimitrāṇāmimaṁ śrutvā parājayam ,
ko madanyaḥ pumāँlloke na jahyātsūta jīvitam.
25. jñātisambandhimitrāṇām imam śrutvā parājayam
kaḥ madanyaḥ pumān loke na jahyāt sūta jīvitam
25. sūta jñātisambandhimitrāṇām imam parājayam
śrutvā loke kaḥ madanyaḥ pumān jīvitam na jahyāt
25. O charioteer, having heard of this defeat of my kinsmen, relatives, and friends, what man in the world, other than myself, would not give up his life?
विषमग्निं प्रपातं वा पर्वताग्रादहं वृणे ।
न हि शक्ष्यामि दुःखानि सोढुं कष्टानि संजय ॥२६॥
26. viṣamagniṁ prapātaṁ vā parvatāgrādahaṁ vṛṇe ,
na hi śakṣyāmi duḥkhāni soḍhuṁ kaṣṭāni saṁjaya.
26. viṣam agnim prapātam vā parvatāgrāt aham vṛṇe
na hi śakṣyāmi duḥkhāni soḍhum kaṣṭāni saṃjaya
26. saṃjaya aham viṣam agnim vā parvatāgrāt prapātam
vṛṇe hi kaṣṭāni duḥkhāni soḍhum na śakṣyāmi
26. O Saṃjaya, I would choose poison, fire, or a fall from a mountain peak. Indeed, I will not be able to endure these grievous sufferings.
संजय उवाच ।
श्रिया कुलेन यशसा तपसा च श्रुतेन च ।
त्वामद्य सन्तो मन्यन्ते ययातिमिव नाहुषम् ॥२७॥
27. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śriyā kulena yaśasā tapasā ca śrutena ca ,
tvāmadya santo manyante yayātimiva nāhuṣam.
27. saṃjaya uvāca śriyā kulena yaśasā tapasā ca śrutena
ca tvām adya santaḥ manyante yayātim iva nāhuṣam
27. saṃjaya uvāca adya santaḥ tvām śriyā kulena yaśasā
tapasā ca śrutena ca nāhuṣam yayātim iva manyante
27. Saṃjaya said: 'Today, the virtuous consider you, by your splendor, lineage, fame, spiritual austerity (tapas), and sacred knowledge, to be like Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa.'
श्रुते महर्षिप्रतिमः कृतकृत्योऽसि पार्थिव ।
पर्यवस्थापयात्मानं मा विषादे मनः कृथाः ॥२८॥
28. śrute maharṣipratimaḥ kṛtakṛtyo'si pārthiva ,
paryavasthāpayātmānaṁ mā viṣāde manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
28. śrute maharṣipratimaḥ kṛtakṛtyaḥ asi pārthiva
paryavasthāpaya ātmānam mā viṣāde manaḥ kṛthāḥ

28. O King, you are like a great sage in sacred knowledge, and you have accomplished your duty. Therefore, compose your self (ātman) and do not give your mind over to despair.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
दैवमेव परं मन्ये धिक्पौरुषमनर्थकम् ।
यत्र रामप्रतीकाशः कर्णोऽहन्यत संयुगे ॥२९॥
29. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
daivameva paraṁ manye dhikpauruṣamanarthakam ,
yatra rāmapratīkāśaḥ karṇo'hanyata saṁyuge.

29. Dhritarashtra said: "I consider destiny (daivam) alone to be supreme; shame on futile human effort (pauruṣam)! For it was in battle that Karna, who was like Rama, was killed."
हत्वा युधिष्ठिरानीकं पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजान् ।
प्रताप्य शरवर्षेण दिशः सर्वा महारथः ॥३०॥
30. hatvā yudhiṣṭhirānīkaṁ pāñcālānāṁ rathavrajān ,
pratāpya śaravarṣeṇa diśaḥ sarvā mahārathaḥ.

30. Having destroyed Yudhishthira's army and the hosts of chariots of the Panchalas, that great charioteer (Karna), having scorched all directions with a shower of arrows...
मोहयित्वा रणे पार्थान्वज्रहस्त इवासुरान् ।
स कथं निहतः शेते वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः ॥३१॥
31. mohayitvā raṇe pārthānvajrahasta ivāsurān ,
sa kathaṁ nihataḥ śete vātarugṇa iva drumaḥ.

31. ...having bewildered the Pandavas in battle, just as Indra, holding the thunderbolt (vajrahasta), bewilders the demons (asurās) – how then does he lie slain, like a tree broken by the wind?
शोकस्यान्तं न पश्यामि समुद्रस्येव विप्लुकाः ।
चिन्ता मे वर्धते तीव्रा मुमूर्षा चापि जायते ॥३२॥
32. śokasyāntaṁ na paśyāmi samudrasyeva viplukāḥ ,
cintā me vardhate tīvrā mumūrṣā cāpi jāyate.
32. śokasya antam na paśyāmi samudrasya iva viplukāḥ
cintā me vardhate tīvrā mumūrṣā ca api jāyate
32. aham śokasya antam na paśyāmi viplukāḥ samudrasya
iva me tīvrā cintā vardhate ca api mumūrṣā jāyate
32. I do not see an end to this sorrow, just as small fish (viplukāḥ) do not see the end of the ocean. My intense anxiety (cintā) grows, and indeed, a desire to die (mumūrṣā) arises in me.
कर्णस्य निधनं श्रुत्वा विजयं फल्गुनस्य च ।
अश्रद्धेयमहं मन्ये वधं कर्णस्य संजय ॥३३॥
33. karṇasya nidhanaṁ śrutvā vijayaṁ phalgunasya ca ,
aśraddheyamahaṁ manye vadhaṁ karṇasya saṁjaya.
33. karṇasya nidhanam śrutvā vijayam phalgunasya ca
aśraddheyam aham manye vadham karṇasya sañjaya
33. sañjaya karṇasya nidhanam ca phalgunasya vijayam

33. O Sañjaya, having heard of Karṇa's death and Arjuna's victory, I consider Karṇa's demise unbelievable.
वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं सुदृढं मम ।
यच्छ्रुत्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रं हतं कर्णं न दीर्यते ॥३४॥
34. vajrasāramayaṁ nūnaṁ hṛdayaṁ sudṛḍhaṁ mama ,
yacchrutvā puruṣavyāghraṁ hataṁ karṇaṁ na dīryate.
34. vajrasāramayam nūnam hṛdayam sudṛḍham mama yat
śrutvā puruṣavyāghram hatam karṇam na dīryate

34. Surely, my heart must be exceedingly strong, made of adamantine essence, since it does not break even after hearing that Karṇa, that tiger among men, has been slain.
आयुर्नूनं सुदीर्घं मे विहितं दैवतैः पुरा ।
यत्र कर्णं हतं श्रुत्वा जीवामीह सुदुःखितः ॥३५॥
35. āyurnūnaṁ sudīrghaṁ me vihitaṁ daivataiḥ purā ,
yatra karṇaṁ hataṁ śrutvā jīvāmīha suduḥkhitaḥ.
35. āyuḥ nūnam sudīrgham me vihitam daivataiḥ purā
yatra karṇam hatam śrutvā jīvāmi iha suduḥkhitaḥ
35. nūnam me sudīrgham āyuḥ purā daivataiḥ vihitam
yatra karṇam hatam śrutvā iha suduḥkhitaḥ jīvāmi
35. Surely, a very long life was ordained for me by the gods previously, since, having heard of Karṇa's death, I still live here, greatly distressed.
धिग्जीवितमिदं मेऽद्य सुहृद्धीनस्य संजय ।
अद्य चाहं दशामेतां गतः संजय गर्हिताम् ।
कृपणं वर्तयिष्यामि शोच्यः सर्वस्य मन्दधीः ॥३६॥
36. dhigjīvitamidaṁ me'dya suhṛddhīnasya saṁjaya ,
adya cāhaṁ daśāmetāṁ gataḥ saṁjaya garhitām ,
kṛpaṇaṁ vartayiṣyāmi śocyaḥ sarvasya mandadhīḥ.
36. dhik jīvitam idam me adya suhṛddhīnasya
sañjaya adya ca aham daśām etām
gataḥ sañjaya garhitām kṛpaṇam
vartayiṣyāmi śocyaḥ sarvasya mandadhīḥ
36. sañjaya suhṛddhīnasya me idam jīvitam
adya dhik ca adya aham sañjaya
garhitām etām daśām gataḥ kṛpaṇam
vartayiṣyāmi mandadhīḥ sarvasya śocyaḥ
36. O Sañjaya, shame on this life of mine today, deprived of my dear friend! And today, O Sañjaya, I have reached this despicable state. I shall live miserably, a dull-witted man pitiable to all.
अहमेव पुरा भूत्वा सर्वलोकस्य सत्कृतः ।
परिभूतः कथं सूत पुनः शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ।
दुःखात्सुदुःखं व्यसनं प्राप्तवानस्मि संजय ॥३७॥
37. ahameva purā bhūtvā sarvalokasya satkṛtaḥ ,
paribhūtaḥ kathaṁ sūta punaḥ śakṣyāmi jīvitum ,
duḥkhātsuduḥkhaṁ vyasanaṁ prāptavānasmi saṁjaya.
37. aham eva purā bhūtvā sarvalokasya
satkṛtaḥ paribhūtaḥ katham sūta
punaḥ śakṣyāmi jīvitum duḥkhāt suduḥkham
vyasanam prāptavān asmi saṃjaya

37. Having formerly been honored by all people, how, O charioteer, can I live again now that I have been disgraced? O Sañjaya, I have fallen into a calamity that is a very profound sorrow, arising from my previous grief.
तस्माद्भीष्मवधे चैव द्रोणस्य च महात्मनः ।
नात्र शेषं प्रपश्यामि सूतपुत्रे हते युधि ॥३८॥
38. tasmādbhīṣmavadhe caiva droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
nātra śeṣaṁ prapaśyāmi sūtaputre hate yudhi.
38. tasmāt bhīṣmavadhe ca eva droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ
na atra śeṣam prapaśyāmi sūtaputre hate yudhi
38. tasmāt bhīṣmavadhe ca eva mahātmanaḥ droṇasya ca
sūtaputre yudhi hate atra śeṣam na prapaśyāmi
38. Therefore, with the slaying of Bhīṣma and also of the great-souled Droṇa, and with the charioteer's son (Karṇa) killed in battle, I see no remainder (hope) here.
स हि पारं महानासीत्पुत्राणां मम संजय ।
युद्धे विनिहतः शूरो विसृजन्सायकान्बहून् ॥३९॥
39. sa hi pāraṁ mahānāsītputrāṇāṁ mama saṁjaya ,
yuddhe vinihataḥ śūro visṛjansāyakānbahūn.
39. sa hi pāram mahān āsīt putrāṇām mama saṃjaya
yuddhe vinihataḥ śūraḥ visṛjan sāyakān bahūn
39. saṃjaya saḥ hi mama putrāṇām mahān pāram āsīt

39. Indeed, O Sañjaya, he was a great support for my sons. That hero, discharging many arrows, was slain in battle.
को हि मे जीवितेनार्थस्तमृते पुरुषर्षभम् ।
रथादतिरथो नूनमपतत्सायकार्दितः ॥४०॥
40. ko hi me jīvitenārthastamṛte puruṣarṣabham ,
rathādatiratho nūnamapatatsāyakārditaḥ.
40. kaḥ hi me jīvitena arthaḥ tam ṛte puruṣarṣabham
rathāt atirathaḥ nūnam apatat sāyakārditaḥ
40. hi me jīvitena kaḥ arthaḥ tam puruṣarṣabham
ṛte nūnam sāyakārditaḥ atirathaḥ rathāt apatat
40. Indeed, what is the purpose of life for me without that best of men (puruṣarṣabha)? Surely, that supreme warrior (atiratha), afflicted by arrows, fell from his chariot.
पर्वतस्येव शिखरं वज्रपातविदारितम् ।
शयीत पृथिवीं नूनं शोभयन्रुधिरोक्षितः ।
मातङ्ग इव मत्तेन मातङ्गेन निपातितः ॥४१॥
41. parvatasyeva śikharaṁ vajrapātavidāritam ,
śayīta pṛthivīṁ nūnaṁ śobhayanrudhirokṣitaḥ ,
mātaṅga iva mattena mātaṅgena nipātitaḥ.

41. Certainly, he lies on the earth, like a mountain peak split open by a thunderbolt, adorning the ground while drenched in blood. He has been struck down like an elephant by a rutting elephant.
यद्बलं धार्तराष्ट्राणां पाण्डवानां यतो भयम् ।
सोऽर्जुनेन हतः कर्णः प्रतिमानं धनुष्मताम् ॥४२॥
42. yadbalaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ yato bhayam ,
so'rjunena hataḥ karṇaḥ pratimānaṁ dhanuṣmatām.
42. yat balam dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām pāṇḍavānām yataḥ bhayam
saḥ arjunena hataḥ karṇaḥ pratimānam dhanuṣmatām
42. karṇaḥ,
dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām yat balam,
pāṇḍavānām yataḥ bhayam,
saḥ arjunena hataḥ.
dhanuṣmatām pratimānam.
42. Karna, who was the very strength of the Dhritarashtras and from whom the Pandavas felt fear, has been slain by Arjuna. He was the standard among archers.
स हि वीरो महेष्वासः पुत्राणामभयंकरः ।
शेते विनिहतो वीरः शक्रेणेव यथा बलः ॥४३॥
43. sa hi vīro maheṣvāsaḥ putrāṇāmabhayaṁkaraḥ ,
śete vinihato vīraḥ śakreṇeva yathā balaḥ.
43. saḥ hi vīraḥ maheṣvāsaḥ putrāṇām abhayaṅkaraḥ
śete vinihataḥ vīraḥ śakreṇa iva yathā balaḥ
43. saḥ hi vīraḥ maheṣvāsaḥ putrāṇām abhayaṅkaraḥ vinihataḥ vīraḥ śete.
yathā balaḥ śakreṇa iva.
43. Indeed, that hero, a great archer and protector of his sons, lies completely slain, just as the hero Bala was struck down by Indra.
पङ्गोरिवाध्वगमनं दरिद्रस्येव कामितम् ।
दुर्योधनस्य चाकूतं तृषितस्येव पिप्लुकाः ॥४४॥
44. paṅgorivādhvagamanaṁ daridrasyeva kāmitam ,
duryodhanasya cākūtaṁ tṛṣitasyeva piplukāḥ.
44. paṅgoḥ iva adhvagamanam daridrasya iva kāmitam
duryodhanasya ca ākūtam tṛṣitasya iva pipplukāḥ
44. duryodhanasya ākūtam ca paṅgoḥ iva adhvagamanam,
daridrasya iva kāmitam,

44. Duryodhana's desire is like a journey for a cripple, or a cherished wish for a poor person; it is like mere drops of water for a thirsty man.
अन्यथा चिन्तितं कार्यमन्यथा तत्तु जायते ।
अहो नु बलवद्दैवं कालश्च दुरतिक्रमः ॥४५॥
45. anyathā cintitaṁ kāryamanyathā tattu jāyate ,
aho nu balavaddaivaṁ kālaśca duratikramaḥ.
45. anyathā cintitam kāryam anyathā tat tu jāyate
aho nu balavat daivam kālaḥ ca duratikramaḥ
45. kāryam anyathā cintitam tat tu anyathā jāyate
aho nu daivam balavat ca kālaḥ duratikramaḥ
45. A matter conceived in one way indeed turns out completely differently. Alas, destiny (daivam) is powerful, and time (kāla) is insurmountable.
पलायमानः कृपणं दीनात्मा दीनपौरुषः ।
कच्चिन्न निहतः सूत पुत्रो दुःशासनो मम ॥४६॥
46. palāyamānaḥ kṛpaṇaṁ dīnātmā dīnapauruṣaḥ ,
kaccinna nihataḥ sūta putro duḥśāsano mama.
46. palāyamānaḥ kṛpaṇam dīna ātmā dīna pauruṣaḥ
kaccit na nihataḥ sūta putraḥ duḥśāsanaḥ mama
46. sūta palāyamānaḥ kṛpaṇam dīnātmā dīnapauraṣaḥ
mama putraḥ duḥśāsanaḥ kaccit na nihataḥ
46. O charioteer, I hope that my son Duḥśāsana, who was fleeing miserably, with a dejected spirit and diminished valor, was not killed.
कच्चिन्न नीचाचरितं कृतवांस्तात संयुगे ।
कच्चिन्न निहतः शूरो यथा न क्षत्रिया हताः ॥४७॥
47. kaccinna nīcācaritaṁ kṛtavāṁstāta saṁyuge ,
kaccinna nihataḥ śūro yathā na kṣatriyā hatāḥ.
47. kaccit na nīca ācaritam kṛtavān tāta saṃyuge
kaccit na nihataḥ śūraḥ yathā na kṣatriyāḥ hatāḥ
47. tāta saṃyuge nīcācaritam na kṛtavān kaccit
śūraḥ na nihataḥ kaccit yathā kṣatriyāḥ na hatāḥ
47. O dear one, I hope he did not perform a cowardly act in battle. I hope the hero was not killed, lest Kṣatriyas (as a whole) be annihilated.
युधिष्ठिरस्य वचनं मा युद्धमिति सर्वदा ।
दुर्योधनो नाभ्यगृह्णान्मूढः पथ्यमिवौषधम् ॥४८॥
48. yudhiṣṭhirasya vacanaṁ mā yuddhamiti sarvadā ,
duryodhano nābhyagṛhṇānmūḍhaḥ pathyamivauṣadham.
48. yudhiṣṭhirasya vacanam mā yuddham iti sarvadā
duryodhanaḥ na abhyagṛhṇāt mūḍhaḥ pathyam iva auṣadham
48. mūḍhaḥ duryodhanaḥ sarvadā yudhiṣṭhirasya "mā yuddham"
iti vacanam pathyam auṣadham iva na abhyagṛhṇāt
48. The foolish Duryodhana never accepted Yudhiṣṭhira's advice, which was "Do not wage war," just as one does not accept beneficial medicine.
शरतल्पे शयानेन भीष्मेण सुमहात्मना ।
पानीयं याचितः पार्थः सोऽविध्यन्मेदिनीतलम् ॥४९॥
49. śaratalpe śayānena bhīṣmeṇa sumahātmanā ,
pānīyaṁ yācitaḥ pārthaḥ so'vidhyanmedinītalam.

yācitaḥ pārthaḥ saḥ avidhyat medinītalam

49. While lying on a bed of arrows, the immensely noble-hearted Bhishma requested water. Partha (Arjuna) then pierced the surface of the earth.
जलस्य धारां विहितां दृष्ट्वा तां पाण्डवेन ह ।
अब्रवीत्स महाबाहुस्तात संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ॥५०॥
50. jalasya dhārāṁ vihitāṁ dṛṣṭvā tāṁ pāṇḍavena ha ,
abravītsa mahābāhustāta saṁśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ.
50. jalasya dhārām vihitām dṛṣṭvā tām pāṇḍavena ha
abravīt saḥ mahābāhuḥ tāta saṃśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ
50. (saḥ) mahābāhuḥ pāṇḍavena vihitām tām jalasya
dhārām dṛṣṭvā ha abravīt tāta pāṇḍavaiḥ saṃśāmya
50. Seeing that stream of water made by the son of Pandu (Arjuna), the great-armed one (Bhishma) said, "My dear son, make peace with the Pandavas."
प्रशमाद्धि भवेच्छान्तिर्मदन्तं युद्धमस्तु च ।
भ्रातृभावेन पृथिवीं भुङ्क्ष्व पाण्डुसुतैः सह ॥५१॥
51. praśamāddhi bhavecchāntirmadantaṁ yuddhamastu ca ,
bhrātṛbhāvena pṛthivīṁ bhuṅkṣva pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha.
51. praśamāt hi bhavet śāntiḥ madantam yuddham astu ca
bhrātṛbhāvena pṛthivīm bhuṅkṣva pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha
51. hi praśamāt śāntiḥ bhavet ca yuddham madantam astu
bhrātṛbhāvena pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha pṛthivīm bhuṅkṣva
51. Indeed, peace arises from cessation; let this war end with me. Enjoy the earth together with the sons of Pandu, in a spirit of brotherhood.
अकुर्वन्वचनं तस्य नूनं शोचति मे सुतः ।
तदिदं समनुप्राप्तं वचनं दीर्घदर्शिनः ॥५२॥
52. akurvanvacanaṁ tasya nūnaṁ śocati me sutaḥ ,
tadidaṁ samanuprāptaṁ vacanaṁ dīrghadarśinaḥ.
52. akurvan vacanam tasya nūnam śocati me sutaḥ
tat idam samanupprāptam vacanam dīrghadarśinaḥ
52. tasya vacanam akurvan me sutaḥ nūnam śocati

52. My son, certainly grieves for not following his (Bhishma's) instruction. Indeed, this very word of the far-sighted one has now come to pass.
अहं तु निहतामात्यो हतपुत्रश्च संजय ।
द्यूततः कृच्छ्रमापन्नो लूनपक्ष इव द्विजः ॥५३॥
53. ahaṁ tu nihatāmātyo hataputraśca saṁjaya ,
dyūtataḥ kṛcchramāpanno lūnapakṣa iva dvijaḥ.
53. aham tu nihata-āmātyaḥ hata-putraḥ ca saṃjaya
dyūtataḥ kṛcchram āpannaḥ lūna-pakṣaḥ iva dvijaḥ
53. saṃjaya,
tu aham nihata-āmātyaḥ ca hata-putraḥ dyūtataḥ kṛcchram āpannaḥ dvijaḥ iva lūna-pakṣaḥ.
53. But I, whose ministers have been slain and whose sons have been killed, O Sañjaya, have fallen into great distress because of gambling, just like a bird (dvija) with its wings clipped.
यथा हि शकुनिं गृह्य छित्त्वा पक्षौ च संजय ।
विसर्जयन्ति संहृष्टाः क्रीडमानाः कुमारकाः ॥५४॥
54. yathā hi śakuniṁ gṛhya chittvā pakṣau ca saṁjaya ,
visarjayanti saṁhṛṣṭāḥ krīḍamānāḥ kumārakāḥ.
54. yathā hi śakunim gṛhya chittvā pakṣau ca saṃjaya
visarjayanti saṃhṛṣṭāḥ krīḍamānāḥ kumārakāḥ
54. saṃjaya,
yathā hi saṃhṛṣṭāḥ krīḍamānāḥ kumārakāḥ śakunim gṛhya ca pakṣau chittvā visarjayanti.
54. O Sañjaya, just as gleeful boys, after catching a bird and clipping its wings, then release it while playing.
छिन्नपक्षतया तस्य गमनं नोपपद्यते ।
तथाहमपि संप्राप्तो लूनपक्ष इव द्विजः ॥५५॥
55. chinnapakṣatayā tasya gamanaṁ nopapadyate ,
tathāhamapi saṁprāpto lūnapakṣa iva dvijaḥ.
55. chinna-pakṣatayā tasya gamanam na upapadyate
tathā aham api saṃprāptaḥ lūna-pakṣaḥ iva dvijaḥ
55. tasya chinna-pakṣatayā gamanam na upapadyate.
tathā aham api dvijaḥ iva lūna-pakṣaḥ saṃprāptaḥ.
55. Because its wings are clipped, it is unable to fly. Similarly, I too have become like a bird (dvija) with clipped wings.
क्षीणः सर्वार्थहीनश्च निर्बन्धुर्ज्ञातिवर्जितः ।
कां दिशं प्रतिपत्स्यामि दीनः शत्रुवशं गतः ॥५६॥
56. kṣīṇaḥ sarvārthahīnaśca nirbandhurjñātivarjitaḥ ,
kāṁ diśaṁ pratipatsyāmi dīnaḥ śatruvaśaṁ gataḥ.
56. kṣīṇaḥ sarva-artha-hīnaḥ ca nirbandhuḥ jñāti-varjitaḥ
kām diśam pratipat-syāmi dīnaḥ śatru-vaśam gataḥ
56. kṣīṇaḥ,
sarva-artha-hīnaḥ ca nirbandhuḥ jñāti-varjitaḥ,
dīnaḥ śatru-vaśam gataḥ aham kām diśam pratipat-syāmi?
56. Weakened, deprived of all resources, without kinsmen and abandoned by my relatives, to which direction shall I go, wretched and fallen under the power of my enemies?
दुर्योधनस्य वृद्ध्यर्थं पृथिवीं योऽजयत्प्रभुः ।

57. duryodhanasya vṛddhyarthaṁ pṛthivīṁ yo'jayatprabhuḥ ,
sa jitaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ śūraiḥ samarthairvīryaśālibhiḥ.

57. The powerful lord who conquered the earth for the prosperity of Duryodhana, he was vanquished by the heroic, capable, and valorous Pāṇḍavas.
तस्मिन्हते महेष्वासे कर्णे युधि किरीटिना ।
के वीराः पर्यवर्तन्त तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥५८॥
58. tasminhate maheṣvāse karṇe yudhi kirīṭinā ,
ke vīrāḥ paryavartanta tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

58. O Sañjaya, tell me, when that great archer Karṇa was slain in battle by the crowned one (Arjuna), which warriors then continued to fight?
कच्चिन्नैकः परित्यक्तः पाण्डवैर्निहतो रणे ।
उक्तं त्वया पुरा वीर यथा वीरा निपातिताः ॥५९॥
59. kaccinnaikaḥ parityaktaḥ pāṇḍavairnihato raṇe ,
uktaṁ tvayā purā vīra yathā vīrā nipātitāḥ.
59. kaccit na ekaḥ parityaktaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ nihataḥ
raṇe uktam tvayā purā vīra yathā vīrāḥ nipātitāḥ
59. vīra kaccit pāṇḍavaiḥ raṇe nihataḥ ekaḥ na
parityaktaḥ? tvayā purā yathā vīrāḥ nipātitāḥ uktam
59. O hero (Sañjaya), I hope that not a single one (of our warriors), having been killed in battle by the Pāṇḍavas, was abandoned. You previously described how the warriors were struck down.
भीष्ममप्रतियुध्यन्तं शिखण्डी सायकोत्तमैः ।
पातयामास समरे सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ॥६०॥
60. bhīṣmamapratiyudhyantaṁ śikhaṇḍī sāyakottamaiḥ ,
pātayāmāsa samare sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam.

60. With excellent arrows, Śikhaṇḍī felled Bhīṣma, who was not fighting back, in battle; Bhīṣma, the foremost among all weapon-bearers.
तथा द्रौपदिना द्रोणो न्यस्तसर्वायुधो युधि ।
युक्तयोगो महेष्वासः शरैर्बहुभिराचितः ।
निहतः खड्गमुद्यम्य धृष्टद्युम्नेन संजय ॥६१॥
61. tathā draupadinā droṇo nyastasarvāyudho yudhi ,
yuktayogo maheṣvāsaḥ śarairbahubhirācitaḥ ,
nihataḥ khaḍgamudyamya dhṛṣṭadyumnena saṁjaya.

tathā droṇaḥ mahā-iṣvāsaḥ yudhi nyasta-sarva-āyudhaḥ yukta-yogaḥ śaraiḥ bahubhiḥ ācitaḥ (āsīt) draupadinā (ca) dhṛṣṭadyumnena khaḍgam udyamya nihataḥ
61. O Sañjaya, similarly, Drona, the great archer, who had laid down all his weapons in battle and was absorbed in deep spiritual contemplation (yoga), and who was pierced by many arrows, was killed by Drupada's son; Dhṛṣṭadyumna killed him, raising his sword.
अन्तरेण हतावेतौ छलेन च विशेषतः ।
अश्रौषमहमेतद्वै भीष्मद्रोणौ निपातितौ ॥६२॥
62. antareṇa hatāvetau chalena ca viśeṣataḥ ,
aśrauṣamahametadvai bhīṣmadroṇau nipātitau.

aśrauṣam aham etat vai bhīṣma-droṇau nipātitau
62. aham etad vai aśrauṣam: etau bhīṣma-droṇau antareṇa

62. These two were killed unfairly, by deceit, and particularly so. I indeed heard this, that Bhishma and Drona were felled.
भीष्मद्रोणौ हि समरे न हन्याद्वज्रभृत्स्वयम् ।
न्यायेन युध्यमानौ हि तद्वै सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥६३॥
63. bhīṣmadroṇau hi samare na hanyādvajrabhṛtsvayam ,
nyāyena yudhyamānau hi tadvai satyaṁ bravīmi te.
63. bhīṣma-droṇau hi samare na hanyāt vajra-bhṛt svayam
nyāyena yudhyamānau hi tat vai satyam bravīmi te
63. hi vajra-bhṛt svayam (api) bhīṣma-droṇau samare na hanyāt,
hi (yadā tau) nyāyena yudhyamānau.
tat satyam vai te bravīmi.
63. Indeed, even the thunderbolt-wielder (Indra) himself would not kill Bhishma and Drona in battle if they were fighting justly. That truth I indeed tell to you.
कर्णं त्वस्यन्तमस्त्राणि दिव्यानि च बहूनि च ।
कथमिन्द्रोपमं वीरं मृत्युर्युद्धे समस्पृशत् ॥६४॥
64. karṇaṁ tvasyantamastrāṇi divyāni ca bahūni ca ,
kathamindropamaṁ vīraṁ mṛtyuryuddhe samaspṛśat.
64. karṇam tu asyantam astrāṇi divyāni ca bahūni ca
katham indra-upamam vīram mṛtyuḥ yuddhe samaspṛśat
64. tu katham mṛtyuḥ yuddhe astrāṇi divyāni ca bahūni
ca asyantam indra-upamam vīram karṇam samaspṛśat?
64. But how did Death (mṛtyu) touch Karṇa, that hero comparable to Indra, who was hurling many divine weapons and missiles in battle?
यस्य विद्युत्प्रभां शक्तिं दिव्यां कनकभूषणाम् ।
प्रायच्छद्द्विषतां हन्त्रीं कुण्डलाभ्यां पुरंदरः ॥६५॥
65. yasya vidyutprabhāṁ śaktiṁ divyāṁ kanakabhūṣaṇām ,
prāyacchaddviṣatāṁ hantrīṁ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ puraṁdaraḥ.

65. To whom Indra (Purandara) gave a divine power (śakti) that possessed the radiance of lightning, was adorned with gold, and was a slayer of enemies, taking it in exchange for his two earrings.
यस्य सर्पमुखो दिव्यः शरः कनकभूषणः ।
अशेत निहतः पत्री चन्दनेष्वरिसूदनः ॥६६॥
66. yasya sarpamukho divyaḥ śaraḥ kanakabhūṣaṇaḥ ,
aśeta nihataḥ patrī candaneṣvarisūdanaḥ.

66. Whose divine, serpent-mouthed arrow, adorned with gold, feathered, and a destroyer of enemies, lay struck down among the sandalwood trees.
भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्वीरान्योऽवमन्य महारथान् ।
जामदग्न्यान्महाघोरं ब्राह्ममस्त्रमशिक्षत ॥६७॥
67. bhīṣmadroṇamukhānvīrānyo'vamanya mahārathān ,
jāmadagnyānmahāghoraṁ brāhmamastramaśikṣata.

67. Who, having disregarded great charioteers and heroes such as Bhishma and Drona, learned the exceedingly terrible divine weapon, the brahma-astra (brāhmam astra), from the son of Jamadagni (Paraśurāma).
यश्च द्रोणमुखान्दृष्ट्वा विमुखानर्दिताञ्शरैः ।
सौभद्रस्य महाबाहुर्व्यधमत्कार्मुकं शरैः ॥६८॥
68. yaśca droṇamukhāndṛṣṭvā vimukhānarditāñśaraiḥ ,
saubhadrasya mahābāhurvyadhamatkārmukaṁ śaraiḥ.
68. yaḥ ca droṇamukhān dṛṣṭvā vimukhān arditān śaraiḥ
saubhadrasya mahābāhuḥ vyadhamat kārmukam śaraiḥ
68. ca yaḥ mahābāhuḥ śaraiḥ arditān vimukhān droṇamukhān
dṛṣṭvā saubhadrasya kārmukam śaraiḥ vyadhamat
68. And who, the mighty-armed one, having seen warriors headed by Drona retreating and wounded by (Abhimanyu's) arrows, then shattered the bow of Saubhadra (Abhimanyu) with his own arrows.
यश्च नागायुतप्राणं वातरंहसमच्युतम् ।
विरथं भ्रातरं कृत्वा भीमसेनमुपाहसत् ॥६९॥
69. yaśca nāgāyutaprāṇaṁ vātaraṁhasamacyutam ,
virathaṁ bhrātaraṁ kṛtvā bhīmasenamupāhasat.
69. यः च नागायुतप्राणम् वातरंहसम् अच्युतम्
विरथम् भ्रातरम् कृत्वा भीमसेनम् उपाहसत्
69. यः च नागायुतप्राणम् वातरंहसम् अच्युतम्
भ्रातरम् भीमसेनम् विरथम् कृत्वा उपाहसत्
69. And he who, having made his brother Bhīmasena - who possessed the strength of ten thousand elephants, the speed of the wind, and was unwavering - dismounted from his chariot, then ridiculed him.
सहदेवं च निर्जित्य शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
कृपया विरथं कृत्वा नाहनद्धर्मवित्तया ॥७०॥
70. sahadevaṁ ca nirjitya śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
kṛpayā virathaṁ kṛtvā nāhanaddharmavittayā.
70. सहदेवम् च निर्जित्य शरैः संनतपर्वभिः
कृपया विरथम् कृत्वा न अहनत् धर्मवित्तया
70. च शरैः संनतपर्वभिः सहदेवम् निर्जित्य
कृपया धर्मवित्तया विरथम् कृत्वा न अहनत्
70. And having defeated Sahadeva with straight-shafted arrows, he did not slay him, but out of compassion and due to his understanding of (dharma), he merely caused him to be dismounted from his chariot.
यश्च मायासहस्राणि ध्वंसयित्वा रणोत्कटम् ।
घटोत्कचं राक्षसेन्द्रं शक्रशक्त्याभिजघ्निवान् ॥७१॥
71. yaśca māyāsahasrāṇi dhvaṁsayitvā raṇotkaṭam ,
ghaṭotkacaṁ rākṣasendraṁ śakraśaktyābhijaghnivān.
71. यः च मायासहस्राणि ध्वंसयित्वा रणोत्कटम्
घटोत्कचम् राक्षसेन्द्रम् शक्रशक्त्या अभिजघ्निवान्
71. यः च मायासहस्राणि ध्वंसयित्वा रणोत्कटम्
राक्षसेन्द्रम् घटोत्कचम् शक्रशक्त्या अभिजघ्निवान्
71. And he who, after destroying thousands of magical illusions (māyā), killed Ghatotkaca, the fierce chief of the rākṣasas, with Indra's (śakti) weapon.
एतानि दिवसान्यस्य युद्धे भीतो धनंजयः ।
नागमद्द्वैरथं वीरः स कथं निहतो रणे ॥७२॥
72. etāni divasānyasya yuddhe bhīto dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
nāgamaddvairathaṁ vīraḥ sa kathaṁ nihato raṇe.
72. एतानि दिवसानि अस्य युद्धे भीतः धनंजयः
न आगमत् द्वैरथम् वीरः सः कथम् निहतः रणे
72. एतानि दिवसानि अस्य युद्धे भीतः वीरः
धनंजयः द्वैरथम् न आगमत् सः रणे कथम् निहतः
72. For all these days, the hero Dhananjaya (Arjuna), being afraid of him in battle, did not engage in single chariot combat. How then could such a one (Karṇa) have been killed in battle?
रथसङ्गो न चेत्तस्य धनुर्वा न व्यशीर्यत ।
न चेदस्त्राणि निर्णेशुः स कथं निहतः परैः ॥७३॥
73. rathasaṅgo na cettasya dhanurvā na vyaśīryata ,
na cedastrāṇi nirṇeśuḥ sa kathaṁ nihataḥ paraiḥ.
73. rathasaṅgaḥ na cet tasya dhanuḥ vā na vyaśīryata
na cet astrāṇi nirṇeśuḥ saḥ katham nihataḥ paraiḥ
73. tasya rathasaṅgaḥ na cet vā dhanuḥ na vyaśīryata
vā astrāṇi na nirṇeśuḥ saḥ paraiḥ katham nihataḥ
73. If his chariot had not been stuck, or his bow had not been shattered, and if his weapons had not been destroyed, then how could he have been killed by his enemies?
को हि शक्तो रणे कर्णं विधुन्वानं महद्धनुः ।
विमुञ्चन्तं शरान्घोरान्दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि चाहवे ।
जेतुं पुरुषशार्दूलं शार्दूलमिव वेगितम् ॥७४॥
74. ko hi śakto raṇe karṇaṁ vidhunvānaṁ mahaddhanuḥ ,
vimuñcantaṁ śarānghorāndivyānyastrāṇi cāhave ,
jetuṁ puruṣaśārdūlaṁ śārdūlamiva vegitam.
74. kaḥ hi śaktaḥ raṇe karṇam vidhunvānam
mahat dhanuḥ vimuñcantam śarān
ghorān divyāni astrāṇi ca āhave jetum
puruṣaśārdūlam śārdūlam iva vegitam
74. hi kaḥ raṇe āhave mahat dhanuḥ
vidhunvānam ghorān śarān divyāni astrāṇi
ca vimuñcantam vegitam śārdūlam
iva puruṣaśārdūlam karṇam jetum śaktaḥ
74. Who indeed could be capable of defeating Karṇa in battle, as he brandishes his mighty bow, releasing terrible arrows and divine weapons in combat? Who could conquer that best of persons (puruṣa), who is like an impetuous tiger?
ध्रुवं तस्य धनुश्छिन्नं रथो वापि गतो महीम् ।
अस्त्राणि वा प्रनष्टानि यथा शंससि मे हतम् ।
न ह्यन्यदनुपश्यामि कारणं तस्य नाशने ॥७५॥
75. dhruvaṁ tasya dhanuśchinnaṁ ratho vāpi gato mahīm ,
astrāṇi vā pranaṣṭāni yathā śaṁsasi me hatam ,
na hyanyadanupaśyāmi kāraṇaṁ tasya nāśane.
75. dhruvam tasya dhanuḥ chinnam rathaḥ
vā api gataḥ mahīm astrāṇi vā
pranaṣṭāni yathā śaṃsasi me hatam na hi
anyat anupaśyāmi kāraṇam tasya nāśane
75. yathā me hatam śaṃsasi,
dhruvam tasya dhanuḥ chinnam vā rathaḥ api mahīm gataḥ vā astrāṇi pranaṣṭāni.
hi anyat kāraṇam tasya nāśane na anupaśyāmi
75. Surely, his bow must have been broken, or his chariot must have been overthrown, or his weapons must have been lost, since you report his death to me. Indeed, I perceive no other reason for his destruction.
न हन्यामर्जुनं यावत्तावत्पादौ न धावये ।
इति यस्य महाघोरं व्रतमासीन्महात्मनः ॥७६॥
76. na hanyāmarjunaṁ yāvattāvatpādau na dhāvaye ,
iti yasya mahāghoraṁ vratamāsīnmahātmanaḥ.
76. na hanyām arjunam yāvat tāvat pādau na dhāvaye
iti yasya mahāghoram vratam āsīt mahātmanaḥ
76. yāvat arjunam na hanyām tāvat pādau na dhāvaye
iti yasya mahātmanaḥ mahāghoram vratam āsīt
76. "As long as I have not killed Arjuna, I shall not wash my feet." Such was the extremely dreadful vow of that great-souled one (ātman).
यस्य भीतो वने नित्यं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
त्रयोदश समा निद्रां न लेभे पुरुषर्षभः ॥७७॥
77. yasya bhīto vane nityaṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
trayodaśa samā nidrāṁ na lebhe puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
77. yasya bhītaḥ vane nityam dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
trayodaśa samāḥ nidrām na lebhe puruṣarṣabhaḥ

77. Yudhishthira, the king of righteousness (dharma), perpetually feared that best among men (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) (Duryodhana) while in the forest, and thus did not obtain sleep for thirteen years.
यस्य वीर्यवतो वीर्यं समाश्रित्य महात्मनः ।
मम पुत्रः सभां भार्यां पाण्डूनां नीतवान्बलात् ॥७८॥
78. yasya vīryavato vīryaṁ samāśritya mahātmanaḥ ,
mama putraḥ sabhāṁ bhāryāṁ pāṇḍūnāṁ nītavānbalāt.

78. My son, relying on the valor of that powerful, great-souled one (mahātman) (Duryodhana), forcibly brought the wife of the Pandavas into the assembly.
तत्र चापि सभामध्ये पाण्डवानां च पश्यताम् ।
दासभार्येति पाञ्चालीमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥७९॥
79. tatra cāpi sabhāmadhye pāṇḍavānāṁ ca paśyatām ,
dāsabhāryeti pāñcālīmabravītkurusaṁsadi.
79. tatra ca api sabhāmadhye pāṇḍūnām ca paśyatām
dāsabhāryā iti pāñcālīm abravīt kurusaṃsadi
79. ca api tatra sabhāmadhye kurusaṃsadi ca pāṇḍūnām

79. And there, in the midst of that assembly, within the Kuru assembly, and while the Pandavas were watching, he addressed Panchali as 'slave-wife'.
यश्च गाण्डीवमुक्तानां स्पर्शमुग्रमचिन्तयन् ।
अपतिर्ह्यसि कृष्णेति ब्रुवन्पार्थानवैक्षत ॥८०॥
80. yaśca gāṇḍīvamuktānāṁ sparśamugramacintayan ,
apatirhyasi kṛṣṇeti bruvanpārthānavaikṣata.
80. yaḥ ca gāṇḍīvamuktānām sparśam ugram acintayan
apatiḥ hi asi kṛṣṇe iti bruvan pārthān avaikṣata
80. yaḥ ca gāṇḍīvamuktānām ugram sparśam acintayan

80. And he (Duryodhana), not considering the fierce impact of arrows released from the Gaṇḍīva bow, looked at the sons of Pritha (Pandavas), saying, 'Indeed, O Krishna (Draupadi), you are without a husband!'
यस्य नासीद्भयं पार्थैः सपुत्रैः सजनार्दनैः ।
स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य मुहूर्तमपि संजय ॥८१॥
81. yasya nāsīdbhayaṁ pārthaiḥ saputraiḥ sajanārdanaiḥ ,
svabāhubalamāśritya muhūrtamapi saṁjaya.
81. yasya na āsīt bhayam pārthaiḥ saputraiḥ sajanārdanaiḥ
svabāhubalam āśritya muhūrtam api saṃjaya
81. saṃjaya yasya svabāhubalam āśritya muhūrtam api
bhayam na āsīt pārthaiḥ saputraiḥ sajanārdanaiḥ
81. O Sañjaya, he (Karṇa) who, relying on the strength of his own arms, never experienced fear, not even for a moment, from the Pāṇḍavas, their sons, and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa).
तस्य नाहं वधं मन्ये देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
प्रतीपमुपधावद्भिः किं पुनस्तात पाण्डवैः ॥८२॥
82. tasya nāhaṁ vadhaṁ manye devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
pratīpamupadhāvadbhiḥ kiṁ punastāta pāṇḍavaiḥ.
82. tasya na aham vadham manye devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ
pratīpam upadhāvaddbhiḥ kim punaḥ tāta pāṇḍavaiḥ
82. tāta aham tasya vadham devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ
pratīpam upadhāvaddbhiḥ na manye kim punaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ
82. I (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) do not believe that he (Karṇa) can be killed even by the gods, accompanied by Indra, if they were to rush hostilely against him. How much less likely is it then, O dear one (Sañjaya), that he could be killed by the Pāṇḍavas?
न हि ज्यां स्पृशमानस्य तलत्रे चापि गृह्णतः ।
पुमानाधिरथेः कश्चित्प्रमुखे स्थातुमर्हति ॥८३॥
83. na hi jyāṁ spṛśamānasya talatre cāpi gṛhṇataḥ ,
pumānādhiratheḥ kaścitpramukhe sthātumarhati.
83. na hi jyām spṛśamānasya talatre ca api gṛhṇataḥ
pumān ādhiratheḥ kaścit pramukhe sthātum arhati
83. hi na kaścit pumān ādhiratheḥ jyām spṛśamānasya

83. Indeed, no man is able to stand in the presence of Adhiratha's son (Karṇa) while he is touching the bowstring and donning his arm-guards.
अपि स्यान्मेदिनी हीना सोमसूर्यप्रभांशुभिः ।
न वधः पुरुषेन्द्रस्य समरेष्वपलायिनः ॥८४॥
84. api syānmedinī hīnā somasūryaprabhāṁśubhiḥ ,
na vadhaḥ puruṣendrasya samareṣvapalāyinaḥ.
84. api syāt medinī hīnā somasūryaprabhāṃśubhiḥ
na vadhaḥ puruṣendrasya samareṣu apalāyinaḥ
84. api medinī somasūryaprabhāṃśubhiḥ hīnā syāt,
na vadhaḥ puruṣendrasya samareṣu apalāyinaḥ
84. Even if the earth were to lose the radiant beams of the moon and sun, still there would be no slaying for that lord of men (Karṇa) who never flees in battles.
यदि मन्दः सहायेन भ्रात्रा दुःशासनेन च ।
वासुदेवस्य दुर्बुद्धिः प्रत्याख्यानमरोचयत् ॥८५॥

दुःशासनं च निहतं मन्ये शोचति पुत्रकः ॥८६॥
86. sa nūnamṛṣabhaskandhaṁ dṛṣṭvā karṇaṁ nipātitam ,
duḥśāsanaṁ ca nihataṁ manye śocati putrakaḥ.

86. I believe that poor son (Duryodhana) must certainly be grieving now, having seen Karṇa, who had bull-like shoulders, struck down, and Duśāsana killed.
हतं वैकर्तनं श्रुत्वा द्वैरथे सव्यसाचिना ।
जयतः पाण्डवान्दृष्ट्वा किं स्विद्दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ॥८७॥
87. hataṁ vaikartanaṁ śrutvā dvairathe savyasācinā ,
jayataḥ pāṇḍavāndṛṣṭvā kiṁ svidduryodhano'bravīt.

प्रभग्नं च बलं दृष्ट्वा वध्यमानं महारथैः ॥८८॥

विद्रुतान्रथिनो दृष्ट्वा मन्ये शोचति पुत्रकः ॥८९॥

हतोत्साहं बलं दृष्ट्वा किं स्विद्दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ॥९०॥
90. aneyaścābhimānena bālabuddhiramarṣaṇaḥ ,

वामं चक्रं ररक्षुर्वा के वा वीरस्य पृष्ठतः ॥१०२॥
102. ke'rakṣandakṣiṇaṁ cakraṁ sūtaputrasya saṁyuge ,
vāmaṁ cakraṁ rarakṣurvā ke vā vīrasya pṛṣṭhataḥ.

102. Who protected the right wheel of the son of Sūta (Karna) in battle? And who protected his left wheel? Or who stood behind the hero (Karna)?
के कर्णं वाजहुः शूराः के क्षुद्राः प्राद्रवन्भयात् ।
कथं च वः समेतानां हतः कर्णो महारथः ॥१०३॥
103. ke karṇaṁ vājahuḥ śūrāḥ ke kṣudrāḥ prādravanbhayāt ,
kathaṁ ca vaḥ sametānāṁ hataḥ karṇo mahārathaḥ.

103. Which brave warriors stood by Karna? Which cowardly ones fled in fear? And how was Karna, the great charioteer, killed while all of you were assembled?
पाण्डवाश्च कथं शूराः प्रत्युदीयुर्महारथम् ।
सृजन्तं शरवर्षाणि वारिधारा इवाम्बुदम् ॥१०४॥
104. pāṇḍavāśca kathaṁ śūrāḥ pratyudīyurmahāratham ,
sṛjantaṁ śaravarṣāṇi vāridhārā ivāmbudam.

104. And how did the brave Pāṇḍavas advance to confront the great charioteer (Karna), who was showering torrents of arrows just as a cloud pours down streams of rain?
स च सर्पमुखो दिव्यो महेषुप्रवरस्तदा ।
व्यर्थः कथं समभवत्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥१०५॥
105. sa ca sarpamukho divyo maheṣupravarastadā ,
vyarthaḥ kathaṁ samabhavattanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

vyarthaḥ katham samabhavat tat mama ācakṣva sañjaya

105. Sañjaya, tell me how that divine, serpent-mouthed, chief of great arrows became futile at that time.
मामकस्यास्य सैन्यस्य हृतोत्सेधस्य संजय ।
अवशेषं न पश्यामि ककुदे मृदिते सति ॥१०६॥
106. māmakasyāsya sainyasya hṛtotsedhasya saṁjaya ,
avaśeṣaṁ na paśyāmi kakude mṛdite sati.

106. Sañjaya, when the chief part has been crushed, I see no remnant of this army of mine, whose elevation and pride have been destroyed.
तौ हि वीरौ महेष्वासौ मदर्थे कुरुसत्तमौ ।
भीष्मद्रोणौ हतौ श्रुत्वा को न्वर्थो जीवितेन मे ॥१०७॥
107. tau hi vīrau maheṣvāsau madarthe kurusattamau ,
bhīṣmadroṇau hatau śrutvā ko nvartho jīvitena me.

107. Indeed, after hearing that those two heroes, the great archers and best among the Kurus - Bhīṣma and Droṇa - have been slain for my sake, what purpose does life hold for me now?
न मृष्यामि च राधेयं हतमाहवशोभिनम् ।
यस्य बाह्वोर्बलं तुल्यं कुञ्जराणां शतं शतम् ॥१०८॥
108. na mṛṣyāmi ca rādheyaṁ hatamāhavaśobhinam ,
yasya bāhvorbalaṁ tulyaṁ kuñjarāṇāṁ śataṁ śatam.
108. na mṛṣyāmi ca rādheyam hatam āhavaśobhinam
yasya bāhvoḥ balam tulyam kuñjarāṇām śatam śatam
108. ca rādheyam hatam āhavaśobhinam na mṛṣyāmi

108. And I cannot bear that Rādhya (Karṇa), who shone brilliantly in battle, has been killed. His arms possessed strength equal to hundreds upon hundreds of elephants.
द्रोणे हते च यद्वृत्तं कौरवाणां परैः सह ।
संग्रामे नरवीराणां तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥१०९॥
109. droṇe hate ca yadvṛttaṁ kauravāṇāṁ paraiḥ saha ,
saṁgrāme naravīrāṇāṁ tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

saṅgrāme naravīrāṇām tat mama ācakṣva saṃjaya

109. O Sañjaya, recount to me what transpired for the Kauravas and their heroic warriors in battle against their enemies after Droṇa was slain.
यथा च कर्णः कौन्तेयैः सह युद्धमयोजयत् ।
यथा च द्विषतां हन्ता रणे शान्तस्तदुच्यताम् ॥११०॥
110. yathā ca karṇaḥ kaunteyaiḥ saha yuddhamayojayat ,
yathā ca dviṣatāṁ hantā raṇe śāntastaducyatām.

110. And relate how Karṇa waged war with the sons of Kuntī, and how the slayer of foes became still (śāntaḥ) in that conflict; that should be told.
