वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा च विदुरं प्राप्तं राज्ञा च परिसान्त्वितम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रात्मजो राजा पर्यतप्यत दुर्मतिः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā ca viduraṁ prāptaṁ rājñā ca parisāntvitam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajo rājā paryatapyata durmatiḥ.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "And having heard that Vidura had arrived and been thoroughly consoled by the King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), the ill-minded king, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), was greatly distressed."
स सौबलं समानाय्य कर्णदुःशासनावपि ।
अब्रवीद्वचनं राजा प्रविश्याबुद्धिजं तमः ॥२॥
2. sa saubalaṁ samānāyya karṇaduḥśāsanāvapi ,
abravīdvacanaṁ rājā praviśyābuddhijaṁ tamaḥ.
2. sa saubalaṃ samānāyya karṇaduḥśāsanau api
abravīt vacanaṃ rājā praviśya abuddhijam tamaḥ
2. The king (Duryodhana), having summoned Saubala (Shakuni) as well as Karṇa and Duḥśāsana, spoke these words, as he was deeply enveloped in the darkness born of his own ignorance.
एष प्रत्यागतो मन्त्री धृतराष्ट्रस्य संमतः ।
विदुरः पाण्डुपुत्राणां सुहृद्विद्वान्हिते रतः ॥३॥
3. eṣa pratyāgato mantrī dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṁmataḥ ,
viduraḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ suhṛdvidvānhite rataḥ.
3. eṣaḥ pratyāgataḥ mantrī dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṃmataḥ
viduraḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇām suhṛt vidvān hite rataḥ
3. This is Vidura, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's esteemed minister, who has returned. He is a wise and learned friend, devoted to the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas.
यावदस्य पुनर्बुद्धिं विदुरो नापकर्षति ।
पाण्डवानयने तावन्मन्त्रयध्वं हितं मम ॥४॥
4. yāvadasya punarbuddhiṁ viduro nāpakarṣati ,
pāṇḍavānayane tāvanmantrayadhvaṁ hitaṁ mama.
4. yāvat asya punaḥ buddhim viduraḥ na apakarṣati
pāṇḍavānayane tāvat mantrayadhvam hitam mama
4. "As long as Vidura does not again turn my mind away from my current resolve regarding the bringing back of the Pāṇḍavas, you all should deliberate on what is beneficial for me."
अथ पश्याम्यहं पार्थान्प्राप्तानिह कथंचन ।
पुनः शोषं गमिष्यामि निरासुर्निरवग्रहः ॥५॥
5. atha paśyāmyahaṁ pārthānprāptāniha kathaṁcana ,
punaḥ śoṣaṁ gamiṣyāmi nirāsurniravagrahaḥ.
5. atha paśyāmi aham pārthān prāptān iha kathaṃcana
punaḥ śoṣam gamiṣyāmi nirāsuḥ niravagrahaḥ
5. "Then, if I were to see the Pāṇḍavas somehow arrive here, I would again become utterly distraught, disheartened and without any self-control."
विषमुद्बन्धनं वापि शस्त्रमग्निप्रवेशनम् ।
करिष्ये न हि तानृद्धान्पुनर्द्रष्टुमिहोत्सहे ॥६॥
6. viṣamudbandhanaṁ vāpi śastramagnipraveśanam ,
kariṣye na hi tānṛddhānpunardraṣṭumihotsahe.
6. viṣam udbandhanam vā api śastram agnipraveśanam
kariṣye na hi tān ṛddhān punar draṣṭum iha utsahe
6. I will take poison, or hang myself, or use a weapon, or even enter fire. Indeed, I cannot bear to see those prosperous ones again.
शकुनिरुवाच ।
किं बालिषां मतिं राजन्नास्थितोऽसि विशां पते ।
गतास्ते समयं कृत्वा नैतदेवं भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. śakuniruvāca ,
kiṁ bāliṣāṁ matiṁ rājannāsthito'si viśāṁ pate ,
gatāste samayaṁ kṛtvā naitadevaṁ bhaviṣyati.
7. śakuniḥ uvāca kim bāliṣām matim rājan āsthitaḥ asi viśām
pate gatāḥ te samayam kṛtvā na etat evam bhaviṣyati
7. Shakuni said: O King, O lord of the people, why have you adopted such a foolish attitude? They have departed after making an agreement, so this will not happen.
सत्यवाक्ये स्थिताः सर्वे पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ ।
पितुस्ते वचनं तात न ग्रहीष्यन्ति कर्हिचित् ॥८॥
8. satyavākye sthitāḥ sarve pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabha ,
pituste vacanaṁ tāta na grahīṣyanti karhicit.
8. satyavākye sthitāḥ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ bharatarṣabha
pituḥ te vacanam tāta na grahīṣyanti karhicit
8. O best of the Bharatas, all the Pāṇḍavas are committed to truthfulness. O dear one, they will never accept your father's word.
अथ वा ते ग्रहीष्यन्ति पुनरेष्यन्ति वा पुरम् ।
निरस्य समयं भूयः पणोऽस्माकं भविष्यति ॥९॥
9. atha vā te grahīṣyanti punareṣyanti vā puram ,
nirasya samayaṁ bhūyaḥ paṇo'smākaṁ bhaviṣyati.
9. atha vā te grahīṣyanti punar eṣyanti vā puram
nirasya samayam bhūyaḥ paṇaḥ asmākam bhaviṣyati
9. Or else, if they accept [an offer to return] and come back to the capital, thereby disregarding the agreement, then the wager will again be ours.
सर्वे भवामो मध्यस्था राज्ञश्छन्दानुवर्तिनः ।
छिद्रं बहु प्रपश्यन्तः पाण्डवानां सुसंवृताः ॥१०॥
10. sarve bhavāmo madhyasthā rājñaśchandānuvartinaḥ ,
chidraṁ bahu prapaśyantaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ susaṁvṛtāḥ.
10. sarve bhavāmaḥ madhyasthāḥ rājñaḥ chandānuvartinaḥ
chidram bahu prapaśyantaḥ pāṇḍavānām susaṃvṛtāḥ
10. Let all of us remain neutral, abiding by the king's wishes, while carefully observing the many weaknesses of the Pāṇḍavas, keeping ourselves well-concealed.
दुःशासन उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ यथा वदसि मातुल ।
नित्यं हि मे कथयतस्तव बुद्धिर्हि रोचते ॥११॥
11. duḥśāsana uvāca ,
evametanmahāprājña yathā vadasi mātula ,
nityaṁ hi me kathayatastava buddhirhi rocate.
11. duḥśāsana uvāca evam etat mahāprājña yathā vadasi
mātula nityam hi me kathayataḥ tava buddhiḥ hi rocate
11. Duḥśāsana said: 'O greatly wise Uncle, this is indeed so, just as you say. Your wisdom, as you constantly speak, truly pleases me.'
कर्ण उवाच ।
काममीक्षामहे सर्वे दुर्योधन तवेप्सितम् ।
ऐकमत्यं हि नो राजन्सर्वेषामेव लक्ष्यते ॥१२॥
12. karṇa uvāca ,
kāmamīkṣāmahe sarve duryodhana tavepsitam ,
aikamatyaṁ hi no rājansarveṣāmeva lakṣyate.
12. karṇa uvāca kāmam īkṣāmahe sarve duryodhana tava
īpsitam aikamatyam hi naḥ rājan sarveṣām eva lakṣyate
12. Karṇa said: 'O Duryodhana, all of us certainly wish for what you desire. Indeed, O king, complete agreement is seen among all of us.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
नातिहृष्टमनाः क्षिप्रमभवत्स पराङ्मुखः ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu karṇena rājā duryodhanastadā ,
nātihṛṣṭamanāḥ kṣipramabhavatsa parāṅmukhaḥ.
13. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ tu karṇena rājā duryodhanaḥ
tadā na atihṛṣṭamanāḥ kṣipram abhavat saḥ parāṅmukhaḥ
13. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'But King Duryodhana, thus addressed by Karṇa, was not exceedingly pleased in his mind at that time; he quickly became averse.'
उपलभ्य ततः कर्णो विवृत्य नयने शुभे ।
रोषाद्दुःशासनं चैव सौबलेयं च तावुभौ ॥१४॥
14. upalabhya tataḥ karṇo vivṛtya nayane śubhe ,
roṣādduḥśāsanaṁ caiva saubaleyaṁ ca tāvubhau.
14. upalabhya tataḥ karṇaḥ vivṛtya nayane śubhe
roṣāt duḥśāsanam ca eva saubaleyam ca tau ubhau
14. Then, upon perceiving [the situation], Karṇa opened his beautiful eyes and, filled with anger, [addressed] both Duḥśāsana and Saubaleya (Śakuni).
उवाच परमक्रुद्ध उद्यम्यात्मानमात्मना ।
अहो मम मतं यत्तन्निबोधत नराधिपाः ॥१५॥
15. uvāca paramakruddha udyamyātmānamātmanā ,
aho mama mataṁ yattannibodhata narādhipāḥ.
15. uvāca paramakruddhaḥ udyamya ātmānam ātmanā
aho mama matam yat tat nibodhata narādhipāḥ
15. Exceedingly angry, he spoke, rousing his own self (ātman) by his own will (ātman): 'O rulers of men, understand what my intention is!'
प्रियं सर्वे चिकीर्षामो राज्ञः किंकरपाणयः ।
न चास्य शक्नुमः सर्वे प्रिये स्थातुमतन्द्रिताः ॥१६॥
16. priyaṁ sarve cikīrṣāmo rājñaḥ kiṁkarapāṇayaḥ ,
na cāsya śaknumaḥ sarve priye sthātumatandritāḥ.
16. priyam sarve cikīrṣāmaḥ rājñaḥ kiṅkarapāṇayaḥ na
ca asya śaknumaḥ sarve priye sthātum atandritāḥ
16. All of us, with our hands ready to serve as his attendants (kiṅkarapāṇayaḥ), desire to do what is pleasing to the king. Yet, all of us are not able to remain diligent in [promoting] his welfare.
वयं तु शस्त्राण्यादाय रथानास्थाय दंशिताः ।
गच्छामः सहिता हन्तुं पाण्डवान्वनगोचरान् ॥१७॥
17. vayaṁ tu śastrāṇyādāya rathānāsthāya daṁśitāḥ ,
gacchāmaḥ sahitā hantuṁ pāṇḍavānvanagocarān.
17. vayam tu śastrāṇi ādāya rathān āsthāya daṃśitāḥ
gacchāmaḥ sahitāḥ hantum pāṇḍavān vanagocarān
17. But we, having taken up our weapons, mounted our chariots, and armored, let us go together to kill the Pāṇḍavas, who are now forest-dwellers.
तेषु सर्वेषु शान्तेषु गतेष्वविदितां गतिम् ।
निर्विवादा भविष्यन्ति धार्तराष्ट्रास्तथा वयम् ॥१८॥
18. teṣu sarveṣu śānteṣu gateṣvaviditāṁ gatim ,
nirvivādā bhaviṣyanti dhārtarāṣṭrāstathā vayam.
18. teṣu sarveṣu śānteṣu gateṣu aviditām gatim
nirvivādāḥ bhaviṣyanti dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ tathā vayam
18. When all of them have been pacified and have gone to an unknown destination, then the Dhārtarāṣṭras and we will be free from disputes.
यावदेव परिद्यूना यावच्छोकपरायणाः ।
यावन्मित्रविहीनाश्च तावच्छक्या मतं मम ॥१९॥
19. yāvadeva paridyūnā yāvacchokaparāyaṇāḥ ,
yāvanmitravihīnāśca tāvacchakyā mataṁ mama.
19. yāvat eva paridyūnāḥ yāvat śokaparāyaṇāḥ
yāvat mitravihīnāḥ ca tāvat śakyāḥ matam mama
19. As long as they are deeply distressed, as long as they are absorbed in grief, and as long as they are without friends, for so long they are vulnerable - this is my opinion.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पूजयन्तः पुनः पुनः ।
बाढमित्येव ते सर्वे प्रत्यूचुः सूतजं तदा ॥२०॥
20. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā pūjayantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
bāḍhamityeva te sarve pratyūcuḥ sūtajaṁ tadā.
20. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā pūjayantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ
bāḍhamityeva te sarve pratyūcuḥ sūtajam tadā
20. Having heard those words from him, and honoring him repeatedly, all of them then replied to the son of Sūta, 'Yes, indeed!'
एवमुक्त्वा तु संक्रुद्धा रथैः सर्वे पृथक्पृथक् ।
निर्ययुः पाण्डवान्हन्तुं संघशः कृतनिश्चयाः ॥२१॥
21. evamuktvā tu saṁkruddhā rathaiḥ sarve pṛthakpṛthak ,
niryayuḥ pāṇḍavānhantuṁ saṁghaśaḥ kṛtaniścayāḥ.
21. evam uktvā tu saṃkruddhāḥ rathaiḥ sarve pṛthakpṛthak
niryayuḥ pāṇḍavān hantum saṃghaśaḥ kṛtaniścayāḥ
21. Indeed, having spoken thus, all of them, enraged and having made a firm resolve, departed in their respective chariots, group by group, to kill the Pāṇḍavas.
तान्प्रस्थितान्परिज्ञाय कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तदा ।
आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा दृष्ट्वा दिव्येन चक्षुषा ॥२२॥
22. tānprasthitānparijñāya kṛṣṇadvaipāyanastadā ,
ājagāma viśuddhātmā dṛṣṭvā divyena cakṣuṣā.
22. tān prasthitān parijñāya kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ tadā
ājagāma viśuddhātmā dṛṣṭvā divyena cakṣuṣā
22. Then, Krishna Dvaipayana, whose self (ātman) was pure, having realized that they had departed and having seen this with his divine eye, arrived there.
प्रतिषिध्याथ तान्सर्वान्भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः ।
प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमासीनमुवाचाभ्येत्य सत्वरः ॥२३॥
23. pratiṣidhyātha tānsarvānbhagavāँllokapūjitaḥ ,
prajñācakṣuṣamāsīnamuvācābhyetya satvaraḥ.
23. pratiṣidhya atha tān sarvān bhagavān lokapūjitaḥ
prajñācakṣuṣam āsīnam uvāca abhyetya satvaraḥ
23. Then, the venerable (bhagavat) one, honored by the people, having quickly approached them all and restrained them, spoke to the wisdom-eyed (prajñācakṣus) Dhritarashtra, who was seated.
