संजय उवाच ।
तथा निपातिते कर्णे तव सैन्ये च विद्रुते ।
आश्लिष्य पार्थं दाशार्हो हर्षाद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tathā nipātite karṇe tava sainye ca vidrute ,
āśliṣya pārthaṁ dāśārho harṣādvacanamabravīt.

1. Saṃjaya said: When Karna was thus struck down and your army had fled, Krishna, the descendant of Daśārha, embracing Pārtha (Arjuna), spoke these words joyfully.
हतो बलभिदा वृत्रस्त्वया कर्णो धनंजय ।
वधं वै कर्णवृत्राभ्यां कथयिष्यन्ति मानवाः ॥२॥
2. hato balabhidā vṛtrastvayā karṇo dhanaṁjaya ,
vadhaṁ vai karṇavṛtrābhyāṁ kathayiṣyanti mānavāḥ.
2. hataḥ balabhidā vṛtraḥ tvayā karṇaḥ dhanaṃjaya
vadham vai karṇavṛtrābhyām kathayiṣyanti mānavāḥ

2. O Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), just as Vṛtra was slain by Balabhit (Indra), so too Karna has been slain by you. Indeed, people will speak of the killing of both Karna and Vṛtra.
वज्रिणा निहतो वृत्रः संयुगे भूरितेजसा ।
त्वया तु निहतः कर्णो धनुषा निशितैः शरैः ॥३॥
3. vajriṇā nihato vṛtraḥ saṁyuge bhūritejasā ,
tvayā tu nihataḥ karṇo dhanuṣā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.

3. Vṛtra was slain in battle by Vajrī (Indra), who possessed immense power. But Karna was slain by you, with your bow and sharpened arrows.
तमिमं विक्रमं लोके प्रथितं ते यशोवहम् ।
निवेदयावः कौन्तेय धर्मराजाय धीमते ॥४॥
4. tamimaṁ vikramaṁ loke prathitaṁ te yaśovaham ,
nivedayāvaḥ kaunteya dharmarājāya dhīmate.

nivedayāvaḥ kaunteya dharmarājāya dhīmate
4. kaunteya vayam te loke prathitaṃ yaśovaham

4. O son of Kunti, we will report this prowess of yours, which is renowned in the world and brings you fame, to the wise king of righteousness (dharma).
वधं कर्णस्य संग्रामे दीर्घकालचिकीर्षितम् ।
निवेद्य धर्मराजस्य त्वमानृण्यं गमिष्यसि ॥५॥
5. vadhaṁ karṇasya saṁgrāme dīrghakālacikīrṣitam ,
nivedya dharmarājasya tvamānṛṇyaṁ gamiṣyasi.

nivedya dharmarājasya tvam ānṛṇyaṃ gamiṣyasi

5. Having reported to the king of righteousness (dharma) the slaying of Karna in battle—an act long desired—you will attain freedom from your obligation to him.
तथेत्युक्ते केशवस्तु पार्थेन यदुपुङ्गवः ।
पर्यवर्तयदव्यग्रो रथं रथवरस्य तम् ॥६॥
6. tathetyukte keśavastu pārthena yadupuṅgavaḥ ,
paryavartayadavyagro rathaṁ rathavarasya tam.
6. tathā iti ukte keśavaḥ tu pārthena yadupuṅgavaḥ
paryavartayat avyagraḥ ratham rathavarasya tam
6. pārthena tathā iti ukte tu yadupuṅgavaḥ keśavaḥ
avyagraḥ tam rathavarasya ratham paryavartayat
6. When Partha said, 'So be it,' Keshava (Krishna), the foremost of the Yadus, unhesitatingly turned that chariot of the best of charioteers (Arjuna).
धृष्टद्युम्नं युधामन्युं माद्रीपुत्रौ वृकोदरम् ।
युयुधानं च गोविन्द इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ yudhāmanyuṁ mādrīputrau vṛkodaram ,
yuyudhānaṁ ca govinda idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
7. dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ yudhāmanyuṃ mādrīputrau vṛkodaram
yuyudhānaṃ ca govindaḥ idaṃ vacanam abravīt
7. govindaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ yudhāmanyuṃ mādrīputrau

7. And Govinda (Krishna) spoke this word to Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Yudhamanyu, the two sons of Madri, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), and Yuyudhāna (Satyaki).
परानभिमुखा यत्तास्तिष्ठध्वं भद्रमस्तु वः ।
यावदावेद्यते राज्ञे हतः कर्णोऽर्जुनेन वै ॥८॥
8. parānabhimukhā yattāstiṣṭhadhvaṁ bhadramastu vaḥ ,
yāvadāvedyate rājñe hataḥ karṇo'rjunena vai.
8. parān abhimukhāḥ yattāḥ tiṣṭhadhvam bhadram astu
vaḥ yāvat āvedyate rājñe hataḥ karṇaḥ arjunena vai
8. yūyam (implied) yattāḥ parān abhimukhāḥ tiṣṭhadhvam vaḥ
bhadram astu yāvat karṇaḥ arjunena hataḥ vai rājñe āvedyate
8. Remain vigilant, facing the enemies; may good fortune be yours. This is until it is reported to the king that Karna has indeed been slain by Arjuna.
स तैः शूरैरनुज्ञातो ययौ राजनिवेशनम् ।
पार्थमादाय गोविन्दो ददर्श च युधिष्ठिरम् ॥९॥
9. sa taiḥ śūrairanujñāto yayau rājaniveśanam ,
pārthamādāya govindo dadarśa ca yudhiṣṭhiram.
9. saḥ taiḥ śūraiḥ anujñātaḥ yayau rājaniveśanam
pārtham ādāya govindaḥ dadarśa ca yudhiṣṭhiram

9. He, having been permitted by those brave warriors, went to the king's residence. And Govinda (Krishna), taking Partha (Arjuna) with him, saw Yudhishthira.
शयानं राजशार्दूलं काञ्चने शयनोत्तमे ।
अगृह्णीतां च चरणौ मुदितौ पार्थिवस्य तौ ॥१०॥
10. śayānaṁ rājaśārdūlaṁ kāñcane śayanottame ,
agṛhṇītāṁ ca caraṇau muditau pārthivasya tau.
10. śayānam rājaśārdūlam kāñcane śayanottame
agṛhṇītām ca caraṇau muditau pārthivasya tau
10. tau muditau pārthivasya rājaśārdūlam śayānam
kāñcane śayanottame caraṇau ca agṛhṇītām
10. Those two, delighted, grasped the feet of the king (Yudhishthira), that tiger among kings, who was lying upon a most excellent golden couch.
तयोः प्रहर्षमालक्ष्य प्रहारांश्चातिमानुषान् ।
राधेयं निहतं मत्वा समुत्तस्थौ युधिष्ठिरः ॥११॥
11. tayoḥ praharṣamālakṣya prahārāṁścātimānuṣān ,
rādheyaṁ nihataṁ matvā samuttasthau yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
11. tayoḥ praharṣam ālakṣya prahārān ca atimānuṣān
rādheyam nihatam matvā samuttasthau yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
11. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tayoḥ praharṣam ca atimānuṣān prahārān

11. Perceiving the great joy of those two (Krishna and Arjuna) and their superhuman deeds, and concluding that Radheya (Karna) had been slain, Yudhishthira rose up.
ततोऽस्मै तद्यथावृत्तं वासुदेवः प्रियंवदः ।
कथयामास कर्णस्य निधनं यदुनन्दनः ॥१२॥
12. tato'smai tadyathāvṛttaṁ vāsudevaḥ priyaṁvadaḥ ,
kathayāmāsa karṇasya nidhanaṁ yadunandanaḥ.
12. tataḥ asmai tat yathāvṛttam vāsudevaḥ priyaṃvadaḥ
kathayāmāsa karṇasya nidhanam yadunandanaḥ
12. tataḥ priyaṃvadaḥ yadunandanaḥ vāsudevaḥ asmai
tat yathāvṛttam karṇasya nidhanam kathayāmāsa
12. Then, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the pleasant-speaker and delighter of the Yadus, narrated to him exactly what had happened regarding Karṇa's death.
ईषदुत्स्मयमानस्तु कृष्णो राजानमब्रवीत् ।
युधिष्ठिरं हतामित्रं कृताञ्जलिरथाच्युतः ॥१३॥
13. īṣadutsmayamānastu kṛṣṇo rājānamabravīt ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ hatāmitraṁ kṛtāñjalirathācyutaḥ.
13. īṣat utsmayamānaḥ tu kṛṣṇaḥ rājānam abravīt
yudhiṣṭhiram hatāmitram kṛtāñjaliḥ atha acyutaḥ
13. atha īṣat utsmayamānaḥ tu kṛtāñjaliḥ acyutaḥ
kṛṣṇaḥ hatāmitram rājānam yudhiṣṭhiram abravīt
13. Then, the infallible (acyuta) Kṛṣṇa, smiling slightly and with folded hands (kṛtāñjali), spoke to King Yudhiṣṭhira, who had vanquished his foes.
दिष्ट्या गाण्डीवधन्वा च पाण्डवश्च वृकोदरः ।
त्वं चापि कुशली राजन्माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥१४॥
14. diṣṭyā gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca pāṇḍavaśca vṛkodaraḥ ,
tvaṁ cāpi kuśalī rājanmādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau.
14. diṣṭyā gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca pāṇḍavaḥ ca vṛkodaraḥ
tvam ca api kuśalī rājan mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau
14. rājan,
diṣṭyā gāṇḍīvadhanvā pāṇḍavaḥ ca vṛkodaraḥ ca tvam ca api mādrīputrau pāṇḍavau ca kuśalī
14. O King, fortunately, you, the bearer of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna), the wolf-bellied (Vṛkodara, i.e., Bhīma), and also the two sons of Mādrī, the Pāṇḍavas (Nakula and Sahadeva), are all safe and well!
मुक्ता वीरक्षयादस्मात्संग्रामाल्लोमहर्षणात् ।
क्षिप्रमुत्तरकालानि कुरु कार्याणि पार्थिव ॥१५॥
15. muktā vīrakṣayādasmātsaṁgrāmāllomaharṣaṇāt ,
kṣipramuttarakālāni kuru kāryāṇi pārthiva.
15. muktāḥ vīrakṣayāt asmāt saṃgrāmāt lomaharṣaṇāt
kṣipram uttarakālāni kuru kāryāṇi pārthiva
15. he pārthiva,
asmāt vīrakṣayāt lomaharṣaṇāt saṃgrāmāt muktāḥ (bhavata) (atha) kṣipram uttarakālāni kāryāṇi kuru
15. Now that you are freed from this horrifying war, which caused the destruction of heroes, O King (pārthiva), quickly attend to your subsequent duties.
हतो वैकर्तनः क्रूरः सूतपुत्रो महाबलः ।
दिष्ट्या जयसि राजेन्द्र दिष्ट्या वर्धसि पाण्डव ॥१६॥
16. hato vaikartanaḥ krūraḥ sūtaputro mahābalaḥ ,
diṣṭyā jayasi rājendra diṣṭyā vardhasi pāṇḍava.
16. hataḥ vaikartanaḥ krūraḥ sūtaputraḥ mahābalaḥ
diṣṭyā jayasi rājendra diṣṭyā vardhasi pāṇḍava
16. krūraḥ vaikartanaḥ mahābalaḥ sūtaputraḥ hataḥ
rājendra pāṇḍava diṣṭyā jayasi diṣṭyā vardhasi
16. The cruel son of Vikartana, the mighty son of the charioteer (Karṇa), has been slain. By good fortune, O king of kings, you are victorious! By good fortune, O son of Pāṇḍu, you thrive!
यः स द्यूतजितां कृष्णां प्राहसत्पुरुषाधमः ।
तस्याद्य सूतपुत्रस्य भूमिः पिबति शोणितम् ॥१७॥
17. yaḥ sa dyūtajitāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ prāhasatpuruṣādhamaḥ ,
tasyādya sūtaputrasya bhūmiḥ pibati śoṇitam.
17. yaḥ saḥ dyūtajitām kṛṣṇām prāhasat puruṣādhamaḥ
tasya adya sūtaputrasya bhūmiḥ pibati śoṇitam
17. yaḥ saḥ puruṣādhamaḥ dyūtajitām kṛṣṇām prāhasat
adya bhūmiḥ tasya sūtaputrasya śoṇitam pibati
17. That vilest of men, who mocked Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) after she was won in the dice game—now the earth drinks the blood of that son of the charioteer (Karṇa).
शेतेऽसौ शरदीर्णाङ्गः शत्रुस्ते कुरुपुंगव ।
तं पश्य पुरुषव्याघ्र विभिन्नं बहुधा शरैः ॥१८॥
18. śete'sau śaradīrṇāṅgaḥ śatruste kurupuṁgava ,
taṁ paśya puruṣavyāghra vibhinnaṁ bahudhā śaraiḥ.
18. śete asau śaradīrṇāṅgaḥ śatruḥ te kurupuṅgava
tam paśya puruṣavyāghra vibhinnam bahudhā śaraiḥ
18. kurupuṅgava te śatruḥ asau śaradīrṇāṅgaḥ śete
puruṣavyāghra tam śaraiḥ bahudhā vibhinnam paśya
18. That enemy of yours, with limbs torn apart by arrows, lies there, O best of Kurus. Behold him, O tiger among men, pierced in many places by arrows.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु दाशार्हं प्रहृष्टः प्रत्यपूजयत् ।
दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति राजेन्द्र प्रीत्या चेदमुवाच ह ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhirastu dāśārhaṁ prahṛṣṭaḥ pratyapūjayat ,
diṣṭyā diṣṭyeti rājendra prītyā cedamuvāca ha.
19. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu dāśārham prahṛṣṭaḥ pratyapūjayat
diṣṭyā diṣṭyā iti rājendra prītyā ca idam uvāca ha
19. tu prahṛṣṭaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dāśārham pratyapūjayat
ca prītyā rājendra diṣṭyā diṣṭyā iti idam ha uvāca
19. But Yudhiṣṭhira, overjoyed, reciprocated the honor to the Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa). And with great affection, he said this: 'Fortunately, fortunately, O king of kings!'
नैतच्चित्रं महाबाहो त्वयि देवकिनन्दन ।
त्वया सारथिना पार्थो यत्कुर्यादद्य पौरुषम् ॥२०॥
20. naitaccitraṁ mahābāho tvayi devakinandana ,
tvayā sārathinā pārtho yatkuryādadya pauruṣam.
20. na etat citram mahābāho tvayi devakīnandana
tvayā sārathinā pārthaḥ yat kuryāt adya pauruṣam
20. mahābāho devakīnandana tvayi pārthaḥ tvayā
sārathinā adya yat pauruṣam kuryāt etat citram na
20. O mighty-armed (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), it is not at all surprising that Arjuna, with you, O son of Devakī (Kṛṣṇa), as his charioteer, would display such valor today.
प्रगृह्य च कुरुश्रेष्ठः साङ्गदं दक्षिणं भुजम् ।
उवाच धर्मभृत्पार्थ उभौ तौ केशवार्जुनौ ॥२१॥
21. pragṛhya ca kuruśreṣṭhaḥ sāṅgadaṁ dakṣiṇaṁ bhujam ,
uvāca dharmabhṛtpārtha ubhau tau keśavārjunau.
21. pragṛhya ca kuruśreṣṭhaḥ sāṅgadam dakṣiṇam bhujam
uvāca dharmabhṛt pārthaḥ ubhau tau keśavārjunau
21. ca kuruśreṣṭhaḥ dharmabhṛt pārthaḥ sāṅgadam dakṣiṇam
bhujam pragṛhya ubhau tau keśavārjunau uvāca
21. And Pārtha (Yudhiṣṭhira), the best among the Kurus and upholder of (natural law) dharma, having grasped his right arm, which was adorned with an armlet, spoke to both Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna.
नरनारायणौ देवौ कथितौ नारदेन ह ।
धर्मसंस्थापने युक्तौ पुराणौ पुरुषोत्तमौ ॥२२॥
22. naranārāyaṇau devau kathitau nāradena ha ,
dharmasaṁsthāpane yuktau purāṇau puruṣottamau.

22. ha nāradena naranārāyaṇau devau purāṇau

22. Indeed, Nārada declared them, the two divine beings, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, to be the ancient, supreme (cosmic) persons (puruṣottama), engaged in the firm establishment of (natural law) dharma.
असकृच्चापि मेधावी कृष्णद्वैपायनो मम ।
कथामेतां महाबाहो दिव्यामकथयत्प्रभुः ॥२३॥
23. asakṛccāpi medhāvī kṛṣṇadvaipāyano mama ,
kathāmetāṁ mahābāho divyāmakathayatprabhuḥ.
23. asakṛt ca api medhāvī kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ mama
kathām etām mahābāho divyām akathayat prabhuḥ
23. mahābāho mama medhāvī kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ
ca api asakṛt etām divyām kathām akathayat
23. O mighty-armed (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), the wise Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), my lord, also repeatedly narrated this divine story to me.
तव कृष्ण प्रभावेण गाण्डीवेन धनंजयः ।
जयत्यभिमुखाञ्शत्रून्न चासीद्विमुखः क्वचित् ॥२४॥
24. tava kṛṣṇa prabhāveṇa gāṇḍīvena dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
jayatyabhimukhāñśatrūnna cāsīdvimukhaḥ kvacit.
24. tava kṛṣṇa prabhāveṇa gāṇḍīvena dhanañjayaḥ jayati
abhimukhān śatrūn na ca āsīt vimukhaḥ kvacit
24. kṛṣṇa tava prabhāveṇa gāṇḍīvena dhanañjayaḥ
abhimukhān śatrūn jayati ca kvacit vimukhaḥ na āsīt
24. O Kṛṣṇa, through your power (prabhāva) and by means of his Gaṇḍīva bow, Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) conquers all enemies who confront him, and he has never once turned away in defeat.
जयश्चैव ध्रुवोऽस्माकं न त्वस्माकं पराजयः ।
यदा त्वं युधि पार्थस्य सारथ्यमुपजग्मिवान् ॥२५॥
25. jayaścaiva dhruvo'smākaṁ na tvasmākaṁ parājayaḥ ,
yadā tvaṁ yudhi pārthasya sārathyamupajagmivān.
25. jayaḥ ca eva dhruvaḥ asmākam na tu asmākam parājayaḥ
yadā tvam yudhi pārthasya sārathyam upajagmivān
25. ca eva asmākam jayaḥ dhruvaḥ tu asmākam parājayaḥ
na yadā tvam yudhi pārthasya sārathyam upajagmivān
25. Indeed, victory is assured for us, and never defeat, because you undertook the charioteership of Arjuna (Pārtha) in battle.
एवमुक्त्वा महाराज तं रथं हेमभूषितम् ।
दन्तवर्णैर्हयैर्युक्तं कालवालैर्महारथः ॥२६॥
26. evamuktvā mahārāja taṁ rathaṁ hemabhūṣitam ,
dantavarṇairhayairyuktaṁ kālavālairmahārathaḥ.
26. evam uktvā mahārāja tam ratham hemabhūṣitam
dantavarṇaiḥ hayaiḥ yuktam kālavālaiḥ mahārathaḥ
26. mahārāja evam uktvā mahārathaḥ tam hemabhūṣitam
dantavarṇaiḥ kālavālaiḥ hayaiḥ yuktam ratham
26. O great king, having spoken thus, the great warrior (mahāratha) was with that chariot, adorned with gold and yoked with ivory-colored horses that had black tails.
आस्थाय पुरुषव्याघ्रः स्वबलेनाभिसंवृतः ।
कृष्णार्जुनाभ्यां वीराभ्यामनुमन्य ततः प्रियम् ॥२७॥
27. āsthāya puruṣavyāghraḥ svabalenābhisaṁvṛtaḥ ,
kṛṣṇārjunābhyāṁ vīrābhyāmanumanya tataḥ priyam.
27. āsthāya puruṣavyāghraḥ svabalena abhisamvṛtaḥ
kṛṣṇa-arjunābhyām vīrābhyām anumanya tataḥ priyam
27. puruṣavyāghraḥ svabalena abhisamvṛtaḥ āsthāya
tataḥ kṛṣṇa-arjunābhyām vīrābhyām priyam anumanya
27. That tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), surrounded by his own forces, having mounted (the chariot), then assented to his dear objective concerning the two heroes, Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna.
आगतो बहुवृत्तान्तं द्रष्टुमायोधनं तदा ।
आभाषमाणस्तौ वीरावुभौ माधवफल्गुनौ ॥२८॥
28. āgato bahuvṛttāntaṁ draṣṭumāyodhanaṁ tadā ,
ābhāṣamāṇastau vīrāvubhau mādhavaphalgunau.
28. āgataḥ bahuvṛttāntam draṣṭum āyodhanam tadā
ābhāṣamāṇaḥ tau vīrau ubhau mādhavaphalgunau
28. tadā āgataḥ bahuvṛttāntam āyodhanam draṣṭum
tau ubhau vīrau mādhavaphalgunau ābhāṣamāṇaḥ
28. Then, having arrived to witness the many events of the battlefield, he addressed those two heroes, Krishna (Mādhava) and Arjuna (Phalguna).
स ददर्श रणे कर्णं शयानं पुरुषर्षभम् ।
गाण्डीवमुक्तैर्विशिखैः सर्वतः शकलीकृतम् ॥२९॥
29. sa dadarśa raṇe karṇaṁ śayānaṁ puruṣarṣabham ,
gāṇḍīvamuktairviśikhaiḥ sarvataḥ śakalīkṛtam.

29. On the battlefield, he saw Karna, the best among men (puruṣarṣabha), lying shattered from all sides by arrows released from the Gaṇḍīva (bow).
सपुत्रं निहतं दृष्ट्वा कर्णं राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
प्रशशंस नरव्याघ्रावुभौ माधवपाण्डवौ ॥३०॥
30. saputraṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā karṇaṁ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
praśaśaṁsa naravyāghrāvubhau mādhavapāṇḍavau.
30. saputram nihatam dṛṣṭvā karṇam rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

30. Having seen Karna slain along with his son, King Yudhiṣṭhira praised those two tigers among men (naravyāghra), Krishna (Mādhava) and Arjuna (Pāṇḍava).
अद्य राजास्मि गोविन्द पृथिव्यां भ्रातृभिः सह ।
त्वया नाथेन वीरेण विदुषा परिपालितः ॥३१॥
31. adya rājāsmi govinda pṛthivyāṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
tvayā nāthena vīreṇa viduṣā paripālitaḥ.
31. adya rājā asmi govinda pṛthivyām bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha tvayā nāthena vīreṇa viduṣā paripālitaḥ
31. govinda adya aham bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pṛthivyām rājā

31. Today, Govinda (Govinda), I am king on this earth, along with my brothers, protected by you, the heroic and wise protector.
हतं दृष्ट्वा नरव्याघ्रं राधेयमभिमानिनम् ।
निराशोऽद्य दुरात्मासौ धार्तराष्ट्रो भविष्यति ।
जीविताच्चापि राज्याच्च हते कर्णे महारथे ॥३२॥
32. hataṁ dṛṣṭvā naravyāghraṁ rādheyamabhimāninam ,
nirāśo'dya durātmāsau dhārtarāṣṭro bhaviṣyati ,
jīvitāccāpi rājyācca hate karṇe mahārathe.
32. hatam dṛṣṭvā naravyāghram rādheyam
abhimāninam nirāśaḥ adya durātmā asau
dhārtarāṣṭraḥ bhaviṣyati jīvitāt
ca api rājyāt ca hate karṇe mahārathe
32. adya mahārathe karṇe hate,
hatam dṛṣṭvā abhimāninam naravyāghram rādheyam,
asau durātmā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ jīvitāt ca rājyāt ca api nirāśaḥ bhaviṣyati.
32. Having seen Karna, the proud tiger among men and son of Radha, killed, that evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana) will now become hopeless, deprived of both his life and kingdom, with the great charioteer Karna slain.
त्वत्प्रसादाद्वयं चैव कृतार्थाः पुरुषर्षभ ।
त्वं च गाण्डीवधन्वा च विजयी यदुनन्दन ।
दिष्ट्या जयसि गोविन्द दिष्ट्या कर्णो निपातितः ॥३३॥
33. tvatprasādādvayaṁ caiva kṛtārthāḥ puruṣarṣabha ,
tvaṁ ca gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca vijayī yadunandana ,
diṣṭyā jayasi govinda diṣṭyā karṇo nipātitaḥ.
33. tvat prasādāt vayam ca eva kṛtārthāḥ
puruṣarṣabha tvam ca gāṇḍīvadhanvā
ca vijayī yadunandana diṣṭyā
jayasi govinda diṣṭyā karṇaḥ nipātitaḥ
33. Puruṣarṣabha! Tvāt prasādāt vayam ca eva kṛtārthāḥ.
Yadunandana! Tvam ca gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca vijayī (sthaḥ).
Diṣṭyā,
govinda,
jayasi.
Diṣṭyā karṇaḥ nipātitaḥ.
33. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha)! By your grace, we are indeed accomplished. O delight of the Yadus (yadunandana)! You and Arjuna, the wielder of the Gaṇḍīva bow, are victorious. Fortunately, O Govinda, you are triumphant, and fortunately, Karna has been struck down.
एवं स बहुशो हृष्टः प्रशशंस जनार्दनम् ।
अर्जुनं चापि राजेन्द्र धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥३४॥
34. evaṁ sa bahuśo hṛṣṭaḥ praśaśaṁsa janārdanam ,
arjunaṁ cāpi rājendra dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
34. evam sa bahuśaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ praśaśaṃsa janārdanam
arjunam ca api rājendra dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
34. Rājendra! Evam sa hṛṣṭaḥ dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bahuśaḥ janārdanam ca api arjunam praśaśaṃsa.
34. O king of kings (rājendra)! Thus, the delighted Yudhiṣṭhira, the King of righteousness (dharma), repeatedly praised Janardana (Krishna) and also Arjuna.
ततो भीमप्रभृतिभिः सर्वैश्च भ्रातृभिर्वृतम् ।
वर्धयन्ति स्म राजानं हर्षयुक्ता महारथाः ॥३५॥
35. tato bhīmaprabhṛtibhiḥ sarvaiśca bhrātṛbhirvṛtam ,
vardhayanti sma rājānaṁ harṣayuktā mahārathāḥ.
35. tataḥ bhīmaprabhṛtibhiḥ sarvaiḥ ca bhrātṛbhiḥ vṛtam
vardhayanti sma rājānam harṣayuktāḥ mahārathāḥ
35. Tataḥ,
harṣayuktāḥ mahārathāḥ,
bhīmaprabhṛtibhiḥ sarvaiḥ ca bhrātṛbhiḥ vṛtam rājānam vardhayanti sma.
35. Then, the great charioteers (mahārathas), filled with joy, congratulated the king (Yudhiṣṭhira), who was surrounded by all his brothers, including Bhīma.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च पाण्डवश्च वृकोदरः ।
सात्यकिश्च महाराज वृष्णीनां प्रवरो रथः ॥३६॥
36. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca pāṇḍavaśca vṛkodaraḥ ,
sātyakiśca mahārāja vṛṣṇīnāṁ pravaro rathaḥ.

sātyakiḥ ca mahārāja vṛṣṇīnām pravaraḥ rathaḥ

36. And Nakula, Sahadeva, and the Pāṇḍava Bhīma (Vṛkodara), along with Sātyaki, O great king, the foremost among the Vṛṣṇis' chariot-warriors.
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च पाण्डुपाञ्चालसृञ्जयाः ।
पूजयन्ति स्म कौन्तेयं निहते सूतनन्दने ॥३७॥
37. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca pāṇḍupāñcālasṛñjayāḥ ,
pūjayanti sma kaunteyaṁ nihate sūtanandane.

37. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, and the Pāṇḍavas, Pāñcālas, and Sañjayas, honored Arjuna (Kaunteya) after the son of the charioteer (Karṇa) had been killed.
ते वर्धयित्वा नृपतिं पाण्डुपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
जितकाशिनो लब्धलक्षा युद्धशौण्डाः प्रहारिणः ॥३८॥
38. te vardhayitvā nṛpatiṁ pāṇḍuputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
jitakāśino labdhalakṣā yuddhaśauṇḍāḥ prahāriṇaḥ.

jitakāśinaḥ labdhalakṣā yuddhaśauṇḍāḥ prahāriṇaḥ

38. Having celebrated King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pāṇḍu, they, shining with victory, having achieved their objective, devoted to battle, and formidable strikers.
स्तुवन्तः स्तवयुक्ताभिर्वाग्भिः कृष्णौ परंतपौ ।
जग्मुः स्वशिबिरायैव मुदा युक्ता महारथाः ॥३९॥
39. stuvantaḥ stavayuktābhirvāgbhiḥ kṛṣṇau paraṁtapau ,
jagmuḥ svaśibirāyaiva mudā yuktā mahārathāḥ.

39. The great chariot-warriors, filled with joy, went to their own camp, praising with celebratory words the two Kṛṣṇas (Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna), those tormentors of foes.
एवमेष क्षयो वृत्तः सुमहाँल्लोमहर्षणः ।
तव दुर्मन्त्रिते राजन्नतीतं किं नु शोचसि ॥४०॥
40. evameṣa kṣayo vṛttaḥ sumahāँllomaharṣaṇaḥ ,
tava durmantrite rājannatītaṁ kiṁ nu śocasi.
40. evam eṣaḥ kṣayaḥ vṛttaḥ sumahān lomaharṣaṇaḥ
tava durmantrite rājan atītam kim nu śocasi
40. rājan tava durmantrite evam eṣaḥ sumahān

40. O king, this immensely great, hair-raising destruction has thus occurred due to your bad counsel. Why do you now lament that which is already past?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तदप्रियं राजन्धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ।
पपात भूमौ निश्चेष्टः कौरव्यः परमार्तिवान् ।
तथा सत्यव्रता देवी गान्धारी धर्मदर्शिनी ॥४१॥
41. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā tadapriyaṁ rājandhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ ,
papāta bhūmau niśceṣṭaḥ kauravyaḥ paramārtivān ,
tathā satyavratā devī gāndhārī dharmadarśinī.
41. vaiśaṁpāyanaḥ uvāca śrutvā tat apriyam
rājan dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahīpatiḥ papāta bhūmau
niśceṣṭaḥ kauravyaḥ paramārtivān
tathā satyavratā devī gāndhārī dharmadarśinī
41. vaiśaṁpāyanaḥ uvāca rājan tat apriyam
śrutvā mahīpatiḥ kauravyaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ
niśceṣṭaḥ paramārtivān bhūmau papāta tathā
satyavratā dharma-darśinī devī gāndhārī
41. Vaiśampayana said: O king (Janamejaya), upon hearing that unpleasant news, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of the earth and descendant of Kuru, fell motionless to the ground, overcome with extreme distress. Similarly, Queen Gāndhārī, who was devoted to truth (satyavrata) and understood natural law (dharma), also fell.
तं प्रत्यगृह्णाद्विदुरो नृपतिं संजयस्तथा ।
पर्याश्वासयतश्चैवं तावुभावेव भूमिपम् ॥४२॥
42. taṁ pratyagṛhṇādviduro nṛpatiṁ saṁjayastathā ,
paryāśvāsayataścaivaṁ tāvubhāveva bhūmipam.
42. tam prati-agṛhṇāt viduraḥ nṛpatim saṁjayaḥ tathā
pari-āśvāsayataḥ ca evam tau ubhau eva bhūmipam
42. viduraḥ tam nṛpatim prati-agṛhṇāt tathā saṁjayaḥ
ca evam tau ubhau eva bhūmipam pari-āśvāsayataḥ
42. Vidura raised that king, and Saṁjaya did so too. Both of them, in this manner, then consoled the monarch (bhūmipa).
तथैवोत्थापयामासुर्गान्धारीं राजयोषितः ।
ताभ्यामाश्वासितो राजा तूष्णीमासीद्विचेतनः ॥४३॥
43. tathaivotthāpayāmāsurgāndhārīṁ rājayoṣitaḥ ,
tābhyāmāśvāsito rājā tūṣṇīmāsīdvicetanaḥ.
43. tathā eva utthāpayām āsuḥ gāndhārīm rājayōṣitaḥ
tābhyām āśvāsitaḥ rājā tūṣṇīm āsīt vicetanaḥ
43. tathā eva rājayōṣitaḥ gāndhārīm utthāpayām āsuḥ
tābhyām āśvāsitaḥ rājā tūṣṇīm vicetanaḥ āsīt
43. Similarly, the royal women helped Gāndhārī to her feet. The king, having been consoled by those two (Vidura and Saṁjaya), remained silent and bewildered.
