पूर्वमस्मासु भग्नेषु फल्गुनेनामितौजसा ।
द्रोणे च मोघसंकल्पे रक्षिते च युधिष्ठिरे ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: Previously, when we were defeated by Arjuna (Phalguna), who possessed immeasurable might, and when Drona's resolve became futile, and Yudhishthira was protected (by the Pandavas).
सर्वे विध्वस्तकवचास्तावका युधि निर्जिताः ।
रजस्वला भृशोद्विग्ना वीक्षमाणा दिशो दश ॥२॥
2. sarve vidhvastakavacāstāvakā yudhi nirjitāḥ ,
rajasvalā bhṛśodvignā vīkṣamāṇā diśo daśa.

2. All your warriors, with their armors shattered, were vanquished in battle. They were like women in their menses, extremely agitated, looking in all ten directions.
अवहारं ततः कृत्वा भारद्वाजस्य संमते ।
लब्धलक्ष्यैः परैर्दीना भृशावहसिता रणे ॥३॥
3. avahāraṁ tataḥ kṛtvā bhāradvājasya saṁmate ,
labdhalakṣyaiḥ parairdīnā bhṛśāvahasitā raṇe.

labdhalakṣyaiḥ paraiḥ dīnāḥ bhṛśa avahasitāḥ raṇe

3. Then, having carried out a retreat with the consent of Drona (Bharadvaja), they (the Kauravas) were miserable, intensely ridiculed on the battlefield by the enemies who had achieved their objective.
श्लाघमानेषु भूतेषु फल्गुनस्यामितान्गुणान् ।
केशवस्य च सौहार्दे कीर्त्यमानेऽर्जुनं प्रति ।
अभिशस्ता इवाभूवन्ध्यानमूकत्वमास्थिताः ॥४॥
4. ślāghamāneṣu bhūteṣu phalgunasyāmitānguṇān ,
keśavasya ca sauhārde kīrtyamāne'rjunaṁ prati ,
abhiśastā ivābhūvandhyānamūkatvamāsthitāḥ.

kīrtyamāne arjunam prati abhiśastāḥ

(te) abhiśastāḥ iva abhūvan,
dhyānamūkatvam āsthitāḥ
4. While all creatures were praising Arjuna's immeasurable qualities, and Krishna's (Keśava's) friendship towards Arjuna was being glorified, they (the Kauravas) became as if cursed, having taken refuge in the state of silent meditation (dhyāna).
ततः प्रभातसमये द्रोणं दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ।
प्रणयादभिमानाच्च द्विषद्वृद्ध्या च दुर्मनाः ।
शृण्वतां सर्वभूतानां संरब्धो वाक्यकोविदः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ prabhātasamaye droṇaṁ duryodhano'bravīt ,
praṇayādabhimānācca dviṣadvṛddhyā ca durmanāḥ ,
śṛṇvatāṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ saṁrabdho vākyakovidaḥ.
5. tataḥ prabhātasamaye droṇam duryodhanaḥ
abravīt praṇayāt abhimānāt ca
dviṣadvṛddhyā ca durmanāḥ śṛṇvatām
sarvabhūtānām saṃrabdhaḥ vākyakovidaḥ

vākyakovidaḥ duryodhanaḥ praṇayāt
abhimānāt ca dviṣadvṛddhyā ca
śṛṇvatām sarvabhūtānām droṇam abravīt
5. Then, at dawn, Duryodhana, troubled in mind by (his) affection, pride, and the growing strength of his enemies, spoke to Drona, enraged and skilled in speech, while all beings listened.
नूनं वयं वध्यपक्षे भवतो ब्रह्मवित्तम ।
तथा हि नाग्रहीः प्राप्तं समीपेऽद्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥६॥
6. nūnaṁ vayaṁ vadhyapakṣe bhavato brahmavittama ,
tathā hi nāgrahīḥ prāptaṁ samīpe'dya yudhiṣṭhiram.
6. nūnam vayam vadhyapakṣe bhavataḥ brahmavittama
tathā hi na agrahīḥ prāptam samīpe adya yudhiṣṭhiram
6. brahmavittama bhavataḥ nūnam vayam vadhyapakṣe
tathā hi adya samīpe prāptam yudhiṣṭhiram na agrahīḥ
6. Indeed, O best among those who know the absolute reality (brahman), we are surely on the side of those who are to be slain by you. For, today you did not capture Yudhishthira, even though he had come near.
इच्छतस्ते न मुच्येत चक्षुःप्राप्तो रणे रिपुः ।
जिघृक्षतो रक्ष्यमाणः सामरैरपि पाण्डवैः ॥७॥
7. icchataste na mucyeta cakṣuḥprāpto raṇe ripuḥ ,
jighṛkṣato rakṣyamāṇaḥ sāmarairapi pāṇḍavaiḥ.
7. icchataḥ te na mucyeta cakṣuḥprāptaḥ raṇe ripuḥ
jighṛkṣataḥ rakṣyamāṇaḥ sāmaraiḥ api pāṇḍavaiḥ
7. icchataḥ te jighṛkṣataḥ raṇe cakṣuḥprāptaḥ ripuḥ
sāmaraiḥ api pāṇḍavaiḥ rakṣyamāṇaḥ na mucyeta
7. If you truly desired, an enemy within your sight in battle would not escape, even if he were being protected by the Pandavas (pāṇḍava) along with the gods (amara), when you seek to capture him.
वरं दत्त्वा मम प्रीतः पश्चाद्विकृतवानसि ।
आशाभङ्गं न कुर्वन्ति भक्तस्यार्याः कथंचन ॥८॥
8. varaṁ dattvā mama prītaḥ paścādvikṛtavānasi ,
āśābhaṅgaṁ na kurvanti bhaktasyāryāḥ kathaṁcana.
8. varam dattvā mama prītaḥ paścāt vikṛtavān asi
āśābhaṅgam na kurvanti bhaktasya āryāḥ kathaṃcana
8. prītaḥ (san) mama varam dattvā paścāt vikṛtavān asi
āryāḥ bhaktasya āśābhaṅgam kathaṃcana na kurvanti
8. Having pleased me by granting a boon, you have since altered it. Noble individuals (ārya) never, in any way, disappoint the hope of a devotee (bhakta).
ततोऽप्रीतस्तथोक्तः स भारद्वाजोऽब्रवीन्नृपम् ।
नार्हसे मान्यथा ज्ञातुं घटमानं तव प्रिये ॥९॥
9. tato'prītastathoktaḥ sa bhāradvājo'bravīnnṛpam ,
nārhase mānyathā jñātuṁ ghaṭamānaṁ tava priye.
9. tataḥ aprītaḥ tathā uktaḥ saḥ bhāradvājaḥ abravīt nṛpam
| na arhase mā anyathā jñātum ghaṭamānam tava priye
9. saḥ aprītaḥ tathā uktaḥ bhāradvājaḥ tataḥ nṛpam
abravīt tava priye ghaṭamānam anyathā jñātum na arhase
9. Then, displeased and thus addressed, that Bhāradvāja spoke to the king: 'You should not misjudge one who is striving for what is dear to you.'
ससुरासुरगन्धर्वाः सयक्षोरगराक्षसाः ।
नालं लोका रणे जेतुं पाल्यमानं किरीटिना ॥१०॥
10. sasurāsuragandharvāḥ sayakṣoragarākṣasāḥ ,
nālaṁ lokā raṇe jetuṁ pālyamānaṁ kirīṭinā.
10. sasurāsuragandharvāḥ sayakṣoragarākṣasāḥ |
na alam lokāḥ raṇe jetum pālyamānam kirīṭinā
10. sasurāsuragandharvāḥ sayakṣoragarākṣasāḥ
lokāḥ raṇe kirīṭinā pālyamānam jetum na alam
10. Even the worlds, with their gods, asuras, and gandharvas, along with yakshas, uragas (serpents), and rakshasas, are not able to conquer in battle one who is being protected by the Diadem-Wearer (Arjuna).
विश्वसृग्यत्र गोविन्दः पृतनारिस्तथार्जुनः ।
तत्र कस्य बलं क्रामेदन्यत्र त्र्यम्बकात्प्रभोः ॥११॥
11. viśvasṛgyatra govindaḥ pṛtanāristathārjunaḥ ,
tatra kasya balaṁ krāmedanyatra tryambakātprabhoḥ.
11. viśvasṛj yatra govindaḥ pṛtanāriḥ tathā arjunaḥ |
tatra kasya balam krāmet anyatra tryambakāt prabhoḥ
11. yatra viśvasṛj govindaḥ tathā pṛtanāriḥ arjunaḥ,
tatra prabhoḥ tryambakāt anyatra kasya balam krāmet
11. Where there is Govinda (Viṣṇu), the creator of the universe, and similarly Arjuna, the vanquisher of armies, there whose power could prevail, except for the Lord Tryambaka (Śiva)?
सत्यं तु ते ब्रवीम्यद्य नैतज्जात्वन्यथा भवेत् ।
अद्यैषां प्रवरं वीरं पातयिष्ये महारथम् ॥१२॥
12. satyaṁ tu te bravīmyadya naitajjātvanyathā bhavet ,
adyaiṣāṁ pravaraṁ vīraṁ pātayiṣye mahāratham.
12. satyam tu te bravīmi adya | na etat jātu anyathā
bhavet | adya eṣām pravaram vīram pātayiṣye mahāratham
12. adya satyam tu te bravīmi etat jātu anyathā na
bhavet adya eṣām pravaram mahāratham vīram pātayiṣye
12. Indeed, I tell you the truth today: this will never happen otherwise. Today, I shall fell their foremost hero, the great charioteer.
तं च व्यूहं विधास्यामि योऽभेद्यस्त्रिदशैरपि ।
योगेन केनचिद्राजन्नर्जुनस्त्वपनीयताम् ॥१३॥
13. taṁ ca vyūhaṁ vidhāsyāmi yo'bhedyastridaśairapi ,
yogena kenacidrājannarjunastvapanīyatām.
13. tam ca vyūham vidhāsyāmi yaḥ abhedyaḥ tridaśaiḥ
api yogena kenacit rājan arjunaḥ tu apanīyatām
13. rājan tam ca vyūham vidhāsyāmi yaḥ tridaśaiḥ api
abhedyaḥ kenacit yogena tu arjunaḥ apanīyatām
13. O King, I will create that military formation (vyūha) which cannot be breached even by the gods (tridaśaiḥ). However, let Arjuna be removed by some means (yogena).
न ह्यज्ञातमसाध्यं वा तस्य संख्येऽस्ति किंचन ।
तेन ह्युपात्तं बलवत्सर्वज्ञानमितस्ततः ॥१४॥
14. na hyajñātamasādhyaṁ vā tasya saṁkhye'sti kiṁcana ,
tena hyupāttaṁ balavatsarvajñānamitastataḥ.
14. na hi ajñātam asādhyam vā tasya saṅkhye asti kiṃcana
tena hi upāttam balavat sarvajñānam itaḥ tataḥ
14. hi tasya saṅkhye ajñātam asādhyam vā kiṃcana na
asti hi tena itaḥ tataḥ balavat sarvajñānam upāttam
14. Indeed, nothing unknown or unattainable exists for him in battle. For, by him, all knowledge has been powerfully acquired from here and there.
द्रोणेन व्याहृते त्वेवं संशप्तकगणाः पुनः ।
आह्वयन्नर्जुनं संख्ये दक्षिणामभितो दिशम् ॥१५॥
15. droṇena vyāhṛte tvevaṁ saṁśaptakagaṇāḥ punaḥ ,
āhvayannarjunaṁ saṁkhye dakṣiṇāmabhito diśam.
15. droṇena vyāhṛte tu evam saṃśaptakagaṇāḥ punaḥ
āhvayan arjunam saṅkhye dakṣiṇām abhitaḥ diśam
15. droṇena tu evam vyāhṛte punaḥ saṃśaptakagaṇāḥ
arjunam saṅkhye dakṣiṇām abhitaḥ diśam āhvayan
15. When this was thus spoken by Drona, the Saṃśaptaka groups again challenged Arjuna in battle, towards the southern direction.
तत्रार्जुनस्याथ परैः सार्धं समभवद्रणः ।
तादृशो यादृशो नान्यः श्रुतो दृष्टोऽपि वा क्वचित् ॥१६॥
16. tatrārjunasyātha paraiḥ sārdhaṁ samabhavadraṇaḥ ,
tādṛśo yādṛśo nānyaḥ śruto dṛṣṭo'pi vā kvacit.
16. tatra arjunasya atha paraiḥ sārdham samabhavat raṇaḥ
tādṛśaḥ yādṛśaḥ na anyaḥ śrutaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ api vā kvacit
16. atha tatra arjunasya paraiḥ sārdham tādṛśaḥ raṇaḥ
samabhavat yādṛśaḥ anyaḥ kvacit na śrutaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ api vā
16. Then, there, a battle took place between Arjuna and his enemies, such as had never been heard or seen anywhere else.
ततो द्रोणेन विहितो राजन्व्यूहो व्यरोचत ।
चरन्मध्यंदिने सूर्यः प्रतपन्निव दुर्दृशः ॥१७॥
17. tato droṇena vihito rājanvyūho vyarocata ,
caranmadhyaṁdine sūryaḥ pratapanniva durdṛśaḥ.
17. tataḥ droṇena vihitaḥ rājan vyūhaḥ vyarocata
caran madhyandine sūryaḥ pratapan iva durdṛśaḥ
17. rājan tataḥ droṇena vihitaḥ vyūhaḥ madhyandine
caran pratapan iva durdṛśaḥ sūryaḥ vyarocata
17. O King, then the battle array (vyūha) arranged by Droṇa shone brightly, formidable like the blazing sun at midday, difficult to behold.
तं चाभिमन्युर्वचनात्पितुर्ज्येष्ठस्य भारत ।
बिभेद दुर्भिदं संख्ये चक्रव्यूहमनेकधा ॥१८॥
18. taṁ cābhimanyurvacanātpiturjyeṣṭhasya bhārata ,
bibheda durbhidaṁ saṁkhye cakravyūhamanekadhā.
18. tam ca abhimanyuḥ vacanāt pituḥ jyeṣṭhasya bhārata
bibheda durbhidam saṅkhye cakravyuham anekadhā
18. bhārata abhimanyuḥ ca jyeṣṭhasya pituḥ vacanāt
tam durbhidam cakravyuham saṅkhye anekadhā bibheda
18. O descendant of Bharata, Abhimanyu, acting on the command of his eldest father (Yudhiṣṭhira), pierced that formidable Chakra (cakravyuha) battle array in many places within the battle (saṅkhye).
स कृत्वा दुष्करं कर्म हत्वा वीरान्सहस्रशः ।
षट्सु वीरेषु संसक्तो दौःशासनिवशं गतः ॥१९॥
19. sa kṛtvā duṣkaraṁ karma hatvā vīrānsahasraśaḥ ,
ṣaṭsu vīreṣu saṁsakto dauḥśāsanivaśaṁ gataḥ.
19. saḥ kṛtvā duṣkaram karma hatvā vīrān sahasraśaḥ
ṣaṭsu vīreṣu saṃsaktaḥ dauḥśāsanivaśam gataḥ
19. saḥ duṣkaram karma kṛtvā sahasraśaḥ vīrān hatvā
ṣaṭsu vīreṣu saṃsaktaḥ dauḥśāsanivaśam gataḥ
19. Having performed an arduous feat (karma) and slain thousands of warriors, he (Abhimanyu) became entangled with six heroes and fell into the power of Dauḥśāsani (Duḥśāsana's son, Lakṣmaṇa).
वयं परमसंहृष्टाः पाण्डवाः शोककर्शिताः ।
सौभद्रे निहते राजन्नवहारमकुर्वत ॥२०॥
20. vayaṁ paramasaṁhṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ śokakarśitāḥ ,
saubhadre nihate rājannavahāramakurvata.
20. vayam paramasaṃhṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ śokakarśitāḥ
saubhadre nihate rājan avahāram akurvata
20. rājan saubhadre nihate vayam paramasaṃhṛṣṭāḥ
pāṇḍavāḥ śokakarśitāḥ avahāram akurvata
20. O King, we (Kauravas) were exceedingly overjoyed, while the Pāṇḍavas, emaciated by grief, withdrew from battle (avahāram akurvata) upon the slaying of Saubhadra (Abhimanyu).
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
पुत्रं पुरुषसिंहस्य संजयाप्राप्तयौवनम् ।
रणे विनिहतं श्रुत्वा भृशं मे दीर्यते मनः ॥२१॥
21. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
putraṁ puruṣasiṁhasya saṁjayāprāptayauvanam ,
raṇe vinihataṁ śrutvā bhṛśaṁ me dīryate manaḥ.
21. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | putram puruṣasiṃhasya saṃjaya
aprāptayauvanam | raṇe vinihatam śrutvā bhṛśam me dīryate manaḥ
21. saṃjaya puruṣasiṃhasya putram aprāptayauvanam raṇe
vinihatam śrutvā me manaḥ bhṛśam dīryate dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca
21. Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, my heart is greatly torn upon hearing that the son of the lion among men (Arjuna), who had not yet reached his youth, was killed in battle."
दारुणः क्षत्रधर्मोऽयं विहितो धर्मकर्तृभिः ।
यत्र राज्येप्सवः शूरा बाले शस्त्रमपातयन् ॥२२॥
22. dāruṇaḥ kṣatradharmo'yaṁ vihito dharmakartṛbhiḥ ,
yatra rājyepsavaḥ śūrā bāle śastramapātayan.
22. dāruṇaḥ kṣatradharmaḥ ayam vihitaḥ dharmakartṛbhiḥ
| yatra rājyepsavaḥ śūrāḥ bāle śastram apātayan
22. dharmakartṛbhiḥ vihitaḥ ayam dāruṇaḥ kṣatradharmaḥ
yatra rājyepsavaḥ śūrāḥ bāle śastram apātayan
22. "This cruel (dharma) of the warrior class (kṣatradharma) has been ordained by those who establish (dharma), where brave heroes, desiring a kingdom, struck weapons upon a mere child."
बालमत्यन्तसुखिनं विचरन्तमभीतवत् ।
कृतास्त्रा बहवो जघ्नुर्ब्रूहि गावल्गणे कथम् ॥२३॥
23. bālamatyantasukhinaṁ vicarantamabhītavat ,
kṛtāstrā bahavo jaghnurbrūhi gāvalgaṇe katham.
23. bālam atyantasukhinam vicarantam abhītavat |
kṛtāstrāḥ bahavaḥ jaghnuḥ brūhi gāvalgaṇe katham
23. atyantasukhinam abhītavat vicarantam bālam kṛtāstrāḥ
bahavaḥ jaghnuḥ he gāvalgaṇe katham brūhi ?
23. "Many expert warriors killed the child, who was extremely happy and roaming fearlessly. Tell me, O son of Gavalgana (Sanjaya), how did this happen?"
बिभित्सता रथानीकं सौभद्रेणामितौजसा ।
विक्रीडितं यथा संख्ये तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥२४॥
24. bibhitsatā rathānīkaṁ saubhadreṇāmitaujasā ,
vikrīḍitaṁ yathā saṁkhye tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
24. bibhitsatā rathānīkam saubhadreṇa amitaujasā |
vikrīḍitam yathā saṃkhye tat mama ācakṣva saṃjaya
24. he saṃjaya amitojasā saubhadreṇa rathānīkam
bibhitsatā yathā saṃkhye vikrīḍitam tat mama ācakṣva
24. "O Sanjaya, tell me how the son of Subhadra (Abhimanyu), of immeasurable prowess, played (fought) in battle, desiring to break through the chariot array."
संजय उवाच ।
यन्मां पृच्छसि राजेन्द्र सौभद्रस्य निपातनम् ।
तत्ते कार्त्स्न्येन वक्ष्यामि शृणु राजन्समाहितः ।
विक्रीडितं कुमारेण यथानीकं बिभित्सता ॥२५॥
25. saṁjaya uvāca ,
yanmāṁ pṛcchasi rājendra saubhadrasya nipātanam ,
tatte kārtsnyena vakṣyāmi śṛṇu rājansamāhitaḥ ,
vikrīḍitaṁ kumāreṇa yathānīkaṁ bibhitsatā.
25. sañjaya uvāca yat mām pṛcchasi rājendra
saubhadrasya nipātanam tat te kārtsnyena
vakṣyāmi śṛṇu rājan samāhitaḥ
vikrīḍitam kumāreṇa yathā anīkam bibhitsatā
25. sañjaya uvāca rājendra yat saubhadrasya
nipātanam mām pṛcchasi tat te kārtsnyena
vakṣyāmi rājan samāhitaḥ śṛṇu
kumāreṇa anīkam bibhitsatā yathā vikrīḍitam
25. Sanjaya said: O great King, what you ask me concerning the slaying of Subhadra's son, I will explain to you completely. Listen attentively, O King. It was like a game (vikrīḍitam) for the young prince (kumāreṇa) who desired to break through the army.
दावाग्न्यभिपरीतानां भूरिगुल्मतृणद्रुमे ।
वनौकसामिवारण्ये त्वदीयानामभूद्भयम् ॥२६॥
26. dāvāgnyabhiparītānāṁ bhūrigulmatṛṇadrume ,
vanaukasāmivāraṇye tvadīyānāmabhūdbhayam.
26. dāvāgnyabhiparītānām bhūri-gulma-tṛṇa-drume
vanaukasām iva araṇye tvadīyānām abhūt bhayam
26. tvadīyānām bhayam abhūt dāvāgnyabhiparītānām
bhūri-gulma-tṛṇa-drume araṇye vanaukasām iva
26. Among your warriors, fear (bhayam) arose, just as it would for forest dwellers (vanaukasām) in a forest (araṇye) filled with many bushes, grasses, and trees, when engulfed by a raging forest fire (dāvāgnyabhiparītānām).
