संजय उवाच ।
हन्त ते वर्णयिष्यामि सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् ।
यथा स न्यपतद्द्रोणः सादितः पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
hanta te varṇayiṣyāmi sarvaṁ pratyakṣadarśivān ,
yathā sa nyapataddroṇaḥ sāditaḥ pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ.

yathā saḥ droṇaḥ pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ sāditaḥ ni apatat (tat).
1. Saṃjaya said: 'Ah, I shall describe everything to you, as I have directly witnessed it, specifically how that Droṇa fell, struck down by the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas.'
सेनापतित्वं संप्राप्य भारद्वाजो महारथः ।
मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य पुत्रं ते वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. senāpatitvaṁ saṁprāpya bhāradvājo mahārathaḥ ,
madhye sarvasya sainyasya putraṁ te vākyamabravīt.
2. senāpatitvam saṃprāpya bhāradvājaḥ mahārathaḥ
madhye sarvasya sainyasya putram te vākyam abravīt

2. Having achieved the position of general, Bhāradvāja, the great warrior, spoke these words to your son in the midst of the entire army.
यत्कौरवाणामृषभादापगेयादनन्तरम् ।
सेनापत्येन मां राजन्नद्य सत्कृतवानसि ॥३॥
3. yatkauravāṇāmṛṣabhādāpageyādanantaram ,
senāpatyena māṁ rājannadya satkṛtavānasi.
3. yat kauravāṇām ṛṣabhāt āpageyāt anantaram
senāpatyena mām rājan adya satkṛtavān asi
3. rājan yat adya mām senāpatyena satkṛtavān
asi kauravāṇām ṛṣabhāt āpageyāt anantaram
3. O King, because today you have honored me with the generalship, immediately after the best of the Kauravas, Bhishma (āpageya).
सदृशं कर्मणस्तस्य फलं प्राप्नुहि पार्थिव ।
करोमि कामं कं तेऽद्य प्रवृणीष्व यमिच्छसि ॥४॥
4. sadṛśaṁ karmaṇastasya phalaṁ prāpnuhi pārthiva ,
karomi kāmaṁ kaṁ te'dya pravṛṇīṣva yamicchasi.
4. sadṛśam karmaṇaḥ tasya phalam prāpnuhi pārthiva
karomi kāmam kam te adya pravṛṇīṣva yam icchasi
4. pārthiva tasya karmaṇaḥ sadṛśam phalam prāpnuhi
adya te kam kāmam karomi yam icchasi pravṛṇīṣva
4. O King (pārthiva), receive the fitting reward (phala) for that deed (karma). What wish shall I fulfill for you today? Choose whatever you desire.
ततो दुर्योधनश्चिन्त्य कर्णदुःशासनादिभिः ।
तमथोवाच दुर्धर्षमाचार्यं जयतां वरम् ॥५॥
5. tato duryodhanaścintya karṇaduḥśāsanādibhiḥ ,
tamathovāca durdharṣamācāryaṁ jayatāṁ varam.
5. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ cintya karṇaduḥśāsanādibhiḥ
tam atha uvāca durdharṣam ācāryam jayatām varam
5. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ karṇaduḥśāsanādibhiḥ cintya
atha tam durdharṣam jayatām varam ācāryam uvāca
5. Then Duryodhana, having deliberated with Karna, Duḥśāsana, and others, spoke to that unassailable preceptor (guru), the best among conquerors.
ददासि चेद्वरं मह्यं जीवग्राहं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
गृहीत्वा रथिनां श्रेष्ठं मत्समीपमिहानय ॥६॥
6. dadāsi cedvaraṁ mahyaṁ jīvagrāhaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
gṛhītvā rathināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ matsamīpamihānaya.
6. dadāsi cet varam mahyam jīvagrāham yudhiṣṭhiram
gṛhītvā rathinām śreṣṭham matsamīpam iha ānaya
6. cet mahyam varam dadāsi rathinām śreṣṭham
yudhiṣṭhiram jīvagrāham gṛhītvā iha matsamīpam ānaya
6. If you grant me this boon, then having captured Yudhishthira (yudhiṣṭhira) alive—that best among charioteers—bring him here to my presence.
ततः कुरूणामाचार्यः श्रुत्वा पुत्रस्य ते वचः ।
सेनां प्रहर्षयन्सर्वामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. tataḥ kurūṇāmācāryaḥ śrutvā putrasya te vacaḥ ,
senāṁ praharṣayansarvāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
7. tataḥ kurūṇām ācāryaḥ śrutvā putrasya te vacaḥ
senām praharṣayan sarvām idam vacanam abravīt
7. tataḥ kurūṇām ācāryaḥ te putrasya vacaḥ śrutvā

7. Then, having heard your son's words, the preceptor of the Kurus (Kauravas), gladdening the entire army, spoke these words.
धन्यः कुन्तीसुतो राजा यस्य ग्रहणमिच्छसि ।
न वधार्थं सुदुर्धर्ष वरमद्य प्रयाचसि ॥८॥
8. dhanyaḥ kuntīsuto rājā yasya grahaṇamicchasi ,
na vadhārthaṁ sudurdharṣa varamadya prayācasi.
8. dhanyaḥ kuntīsutaḥ rājā yasya grahaṇam icchasi
na vadhārtham sudurdharṣa varam adya prayācasi
8. sudurdharṣa yasya grahaṇam icchasi kuntīsutaḥ
rājā dhanyaḥ adya varam na vadhārtham prayācasi
8. O unconquerable one! Blessed is King Yudhishthira (yudhiṣṭhira), the son of Kunti, whose capture you desire. You ask for this boon today, not for his death.
किमर्थं च नरव्याघ्र न वधं तस्य काङ्क्षसि ।
नाशंससि क्रियामेतां मत्तो दुर्योधन ध्रुवम् ॥९॥
9. kimarthaṁ ca naravyāghra na vadhaṁ tasya kāṅkṣasi ,
nāśaṁsasi kriyāmetāṁ matto duryodhana dhruvam.
9. kimartham ca naravyāghra na vadham tasya kāṅkṣasi
na āśaṃsasi kriyām etām mattaḥ duryodhana dhruvam
9. ca naravyāghra duryodhana kimartham tasya vadham
na kāṅkṣasi mattaḥ etām kriyām dhruvam na āśaṃsasi
9. And for what reason, O tiger among men (Duryodhana), do you not desire his death? You certainly do not expect this action (killing him) from me, O Duryodhana.
आहोस्विद्धर्मपुत्रस्य द्वेष्टा तस्य न विद्यते ।
यदिच्छसि त्वं जीवन्तं कुलं रक्षसि चात्मनि ॥१०॥
10. āhosviddharmaputrasya dveṣṭā tasya na vidyate ,
yadicchasi tvaṁ jīvantaṁ kulaṁ rakṣasi cātmani.
10. āhosvit dharmaputrasya dveṣṭā tasya na vidyate
yat icchasi tvam jīvantam kulam rakṣasi ca ātmani
10. āhosvit tasya dharmaputrasya dveṣṭā na vidyate ca
tvam jīvantam kulam ātmani rakṣasi yat icchasi
10. Or is it, perhaps, that no one harbors hatred for the son of dharma (Dharma), and you yourself wish to protect the living family (kula)?
अथ वा भरतश्रेष्ठ निर्जित्य युधि पाण्डवान् ।
राज्यांशं प्रतिदत्त्वा च सौभ्रात्रं कर्तुमिच्छसि ॥११॥
11. atha vā bharataśreṣṭha nirjitya yudhi pāṇḍavān ,
rājyāṁśaṁ pratidattvā ca saubhrātraṁ kartumicchasi.
11. atha vā bharataśreṣṭha nirjitya yudhi pāṇḍavān
rājyāṃśam pratidattvā ca saubhrātram kartum icchasi
11. atha vā bharataśreṣṭha yudhi pāṇḍavān nirjitya
rājyāṃśam pratidattvā ca saubhrātram kartum icchasi
11. Or, O best of Bharatas, do you desire to establish brotherhood after conquering the Pāṇḍavas in battle and then returning their share of the kingdom?
धन्यः कुन्तीसुतो राजा सुजाता चास्य धीमतः ।
अजातशत्रुता सत्या तस्य यत्स्निह्यते भवान् ॥१२॥
12. dhanyaḥ kuntīsuto rājā sujātā cāsya dhīmataḥ ,
ajātaśatrutā satyā tasya yatsnihyate bhavān.
12. dhanyaḥ kuntīsutaḥ rājā sujātā ca asya dhīmataḥ
ajātaśatrutā satyā tasya yat snihyate bhavān
12. kuntīsutaḥ rājā dhanyaḥ ca asya dhīmataḥ sujātā
(prajñā) tasya ajātaśatrutā satyā yat bhavān snihyate
12. Blessed is King Kuntīsuta (Yudhiṣṭhira), and noble is the intelligence of this wise one. His freedom from enemies (ajātaśatrutā) is truly real, because your honor is affectionate towards him.
द्रोणेन त्वेवमुक्तस्य तव पुत्रस्य भारत ।
सहसा निःसृतो भावो योऽस्य नित्यं प्रवर्तते ॥१३॥
13. droṇena tvevamuktasya tava putrasya bhārata ,
sahasā niḥsṛto bhāvo yo'sya nityaṁ pravartate.
13. droṇena tu eva uktasya tava putrasya bhārata
sahasā niḥsṛtaḥ bhāvaḥ yaḥ asya nityam pravartate
13. bhārata,
droṇena tu eva uktasya tava putrasya sahasā bhāvaḥ niḥsṛtaḥ,
yaḥ asya nityam pravartate
13. O Dhṛtarāṣṭra, from your son, who had been addressed thus by Droṇa, a sentiment (bhāva) suddenly emerged, one that constantly prevails in him.
नाकारो गूहितुं शक्यो बृहस्पतिसमैरपि ।
तस्मात्तव सुतो राजन्प्रहृष्टो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥
14. nākāro gūhituṁ śakyo bṛhaspatisamairapi ,
tasmāttava suto rājanprahṛṣṭo vākyamabravīt.
14. na ākāraḥ gūhitum śakyaḥ bṛhaspatisamaiḥ api
tasmāt tava sutaḥ rājan prahṛṣṭaḥ vākyam abravīt
14. rājan,
bṛhaspatisamaiḥ api ākāraḥ gūhitum na śakyaḥ.
tasmāt tava sutaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ vākyam abravīt.
14. Even those equal to Bṛhaspati are unable to conceal an outward expression (ākāra). Therefore, your son, O King, greatly delighted, spoke these words.
वधे कुन्तीसुतस्याजौ नाचार्य विजयो मम ।
हते युधिष्ठिरे पार्थो हन्यात्सर्वान्हि नो ध्रुवम् ॥१५॥
15. vadhe kuntīsutasyājau nācārya vijayo mama ,
hate yudhiṣṭhire pārtho hanyātsarvānhi no dhruvam.
15. vadhe kuntīsutasya ājau na ācārya vijayaḥ mama hate
yudhiṣṭhire pārthaḥ hanyāt sarvān hi naḥ dhruvam
15. ācārya,
ājau kuntīsutasya vadhe mama vijayaḥ na.
yudhiṣṭhire hate,
pārthaḥ hi naḥ sarvān dhruvam hanyāt.
15. O Teacher (ācārya), there is no victory for me in the slaying of Kuntī's son [Arjuna] in battle. If Yudhiṣṭhira is slain, Pārtha [Arjuna] would surely kill all of us.
न च शक्यो रणे सर्वैर्निहन्तुममरैरपि ।
य एव चैषां शेषः स्यात्स एवास्मान्न शेषयेत् ॥१६॥
16. na ca śakyo raṇe sarvairnihantumamarairapi ,
ya eva caiṣāṁ śeṣaḥ syātsa evāsmānna śeṣayet.
16. na ca śakyaḥ raṇe sarvaiḥ nihantum amaraiḥ api yaḥ
eva ca eṣām śeṣaḥ syāt saḥ eva asmān na śeṣayet
16. ca raṇe sarvaiḥ amaraiḥ api [saḥ] nihantum na śakyaḥ.
ca eṣām yaḥ eva śeṣaḥ syāt,
saḥ eva asmān na śeṣayet.
16. Nor is he [Arjuna] capable of being killed in battle even by all the gods (amara). And whoever among them [the Pāṇḍavas] might remain, that very one would not leave us remaining.
सत्यप्रतिज्ञे त्वानीते पुनर्द्यूतेन निर्जिते ।
पुनर्यास्यन्त्यरण्याय कौन्तेयास्तमनुव्रताः ॥१७॥
17. satyapratijñe tvānīte punardyūtena nirjite ,
punaryāsyantyaraṇyāya kaunteyāstamanuvratāḥ.
17. satyapratijñe tu ānīte punar dyūtena nirjite
punar yāsyanti araṇyāya kaunteyāḥ tam anuvratāḥ
17. satyapratijñe [yudhiṣṭhire] ānīte,
tu punar dyūtena nirjite [sati],
tam anuvratāḥ kaunteyāḥ punar araṇyāya yāsyanti.
17. When the one truthful to his vow [Yudhiṣṭhira] is brought back, and is again defeated by gambling, then the sons of Kuntī (Kaunteyas), who are devoted to him, will once more go to the forest.
सोऽयं मम जयो व्यक्तं दीर्घकालं भविष्यति ।
अतो न वधमिच्छामि धर्मराजस्य कर्हिचित् ॥१८॥
18. so'yaṁ mama jayo vyaktaṁ dīrghakālaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
ato na vadhamicchāmi dharmarājasya karhicit.
18. saḥ ayam mama jayaḥ vyaktam dīrghakālam bhaviṣyati
ataḥ na vadham icchāmi dharmarājasya karhicit
18. ayam saḥ mama jayaḥ vyaktam dīrghakālam bhaviṣyati
ataḥ dharmarājasya vadham karhicit na icchāmi
18. This victory of mine will certainly last a long time. Therefore, I never desire the killing of the king of dharma (dharmarāja).
तस्य जिह्ममभिप्रायं ज्ञात्वा द्रोणोऽर्थतत्त्ववित् ।
तं वरं सान्तरं तस्मै ददौ संचिन्त्य बुद्धिमान् ॥१९॥
19. tasya jihmamabhiprāyaṁ jñātvā droṇo'rthatattvavit ,
taṁ varaṁ sāntaraṁ tasmai dadau saṁcintya buddhimān.
19. tasya jihmam abhiprāyam jñātvā droṇaḥ arthatattvavit
tam varam sāntaram tasmai dadau saṃcintya buddhimān
19. buddhimān arthatattvavit droṇaḥ tasya jihmam abhiprāyam
jñātvā saṃcintya tasmai tam sāntaram varam dadau
19. Droṇa, who was intelligent and a knower of the true meaning of things (arthatattvavit), having understood his crooked intention, carefully considered and then granted him that boon with a specific condition.
द्रोण उवाच ।
न चेद्युधिष्ठिरं वीर पालयेदर्जुनो युधि ।
मन्यस्व पाण्डवं ज्येष्ठमानीतं वशमात्मनः ॥२०॥
20. droṇa uvāca ,
na cedyudhiṣṭhiraṁ vīra pālayedarjuno yudhi ,
manyasva pāṇḍavaṁ jyeṣṭhamānītaṁ vaśamātmanaḥ.
20. droṇaḥ uvāca na cet yudhiṣṭhiram vīra pālayet arjunaḥ
yudhi manyasva pāṇḍavam jyeṣṭham ānītam vaśam ātmanaḥ
20. droṇaḥ uvāca he vīra,
cet arjunaḥ yudhi yudhiṣṭhiram na pālayet jyeṣṭham pāṇḍavam ātmanaḥ vaśam ānītam manyasva
20. Droṇa said: "O hero, if Arjuna does not protect Yudhiṣṭhira in battle, then consider that the eldest Pāṇḍava has been brought under your own control (ātman)."
न हि पार्थो रणे शक्यः सेन्द्रैर्देवासुरैरपि ।
प्रत्युद्यातुमतस्तात नैतदामर्षयाम्यहम् ॥२१॥
21. na hi pārtho raṇe śakyaḥ sendrairdevāsurairapi ,
pratyudyātumatastāta naitadāmarṣayāmyaham.
21. na hi pārthaḥ raṇe śakyaḥ sa-indraiḥ deva-asuraiḥ
api pratyudyātum ataḥ tāta na etat āmarṣayāmi aham
21. hi pārthaḥ raṇe sa-indraiḥ deva-asuraiḥ api pratyudyātum
na śakyaḥ ataḥ tāta aham etat na āmarṣayāmi
21. Indeed, Pārtha (Arjuna) cannot be confronted in battle, not even by the gods and asuras led by Indra. Therefore, O dear one, I do not tolerate this (situation/condition).
असंशयं स शिष्यो मे मत्पूर्वश्चास्त्रकर्मणि ।
तरुणः कीर्तियुक्तश्च एकायनगतश्च सः ॥२२॥
22. asaṁśayaṁ sa śiṣyo me matpūrvaścāstrakarmaṇi ,
taruṇaḥ kīrtiyuktaśca ekāyanagataśca saḥ.
22. asaṃśayam saḥ śiṣyaḥ me matpūrvaḥ ca astrakarmaṇi
taruṇaḥ kīrtiyuktaḥ ca ekāyanagataḥ ca saḥ
22. saḥ me śiṣyaḥ,
asaṃśayam,
ca astrakarmaṇi matpūrvaḥ.
saḥ ca taruṇaḥ ca kīrtiyuktaḥ ca ekāyanagataḥ.
22. He is undoubtedly my disciple, and even my superior in the art of weaponry. He is young, renowned, and singularly devoted to his path.
अस्त्राणीन्द्राच्च रुद्राच्च भूयांसि समवाप्तवान् ।
अमर्षितश्च ते राजंस्तेन नामर्षयाम्यहम् ॥२३॥
23. astrāṇīndrācca rudrācca bhūyāṁsi samavāptavān ,
amarṣitaśca te rājaṁstena nāmarṣayāmyaham.
23. astrāṇi indrāt ca rudrāt ca bhūyāṃsi samavāptavān
amarṣitaḥ ca te rājan tena na amarṣayāmi aham
23. rājan,
saḥ indrāt ca rudrāt ca bhūyāṃsi astrāṇi samavāptavān.
ca saḥ te amarṣitaḥ,
tena aham na amarṣayāmi.
23. He has obtained numerous weapons from Indra and Rudra. And, O King, he is intolerant towards you, therefore I do not tolerate him.
स चापक्रम्यतां युद्धाद्येनोपायेन शक्यते ।
अपनीते ततः पार्थे धर्मराजो जितस्त्वया ॥२४॥
24. sa cāpakramyatāṁ yuddhādyenopāyena śakyate ,
apanīte tataḥ pārthe dharmarājo jitastvayā.
24. saḥ ca apakramyatām yuddhāt yena upāyena śakyate
apanīte tataḥ pārthe dharmarājaḥ jitaḥ tvayā
24. ca saḥ yena upāyena śakyate,
yuddhāt apakramyatām.
tataḥ pārthe apanīte,
dharmarājaḥ tvayā jitaḥ (bhavet).
24. And let him be removed from battle by whatever means possible. When Arjuna is removed, then Yudhishthira, the king of natural law (dharma), will be conquered by you.
ग्रहणं चेज्जयं तस्य मन्यसे पुरुषर्षभ ।
एतेन चाभ्युपायेन ध्रुवं ग्रहणमेष्यति ॥२५॥
25. grahaṇaṁ cejjayaṁ tasya manyase puruṣarṣabha ,
etena cābhyupāyena dhruvaṁ grahaṇameṣyati.
25. grahaṇam cet jayam tasya manyase puruṣarṣabha
etena ca abhyupāyena dhruvam grahaṇam eṣyati
25. puruṣarṣabha,
cet tasya grahaṇam jayam manyase,
ca etena abhyupāyena (saḥ) dhruvam grahaṇam eṣyati.
25. O best among persons (puruṣa), if you consider his capture to be victory, then by this very means he will certainly achieve capture.
अहं गृहीत्वा राजानं सत्यधर्मपरायणम् ।
आनयिष्यामि ते राजन्वशमद्य न संशयः ॥२६॥
26. ahaṁ gṛhītvā rājānaṁ satyadharmaparāyaṇam ,
ānayiṣyāmi te rājanvaśamadya na saṁśayaḥ.
26. aham gṛhītvā rājānam satya-dharma-parāyaṇam
ānayiṣyāmi te rājan vaśam adya na saṃśayaḥ
26. aham satya-dharma-parāyaṇam rājānam gṛhītvā
te vaśam adya ānayiṣyāmi rājan; na saṃśayaḥ
26. I, having seized the king who is devoted to truth and natural law (dharma), will bring him under your control today. There is no doubt about it, O King.
यदि स्थास्यति संग्रामे मुहूर्तमपि मेऽग्रतः ।
अपनीते नरव्याघ्रे कुन्तीपुत्रे धनंजये ॥२७॥
27. yadi sthāsyati saṁgrāme muhūrtamapi me'grataḥ ,
apanīte naravyāghre kuntīputre dhanaṁjaye.
27. yadi sthāsyati saṃgrāme muhūrtam api me agrataḥ
apanīte naravyāghre kuntīputre dhanañjaye
27. yadi naravyāghre kuntīputre dhanañjaye apanīte (sati),
(saḥ) me agrataḥ saṃgrāme muhūrtam api sthāsyati
27. If, after the removal of that tiger among men, Arjuna (Dhanañjaya), the son of Kuntī, he (the king) remains before me in battle even for a moment.
फल्गुनस्य समक्षं तु न हि पार्थो युधिष्ठिरः ।
ग्रहीतुं समरे शक्यः सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥२८॥
28. phalgunasya samakṣaṁ tu na hi pārtho yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
grahītuṁ samare śakyaḥ sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ.
28. phalgunasya samakṣam tu na hi pārthaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
grahītum samare śakyaḥ sa-indraih api sura-asuraiḥ
28. phalgunasya samakṣam tu pārthaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ samare
na hi sa-indraih api sura-asuraiḥ grahītum śakyaḥ
28. But in the presence of Arjuna (Phalguna), Yudhiṣṭhira (Pārtha) cannot be captured in battle, not even by gods and asuras including Indra.
संजय उवाच ।
सान्तरं तु प्रतिज्ञाते राज्ञो द्रोणेन निग्रहे ।
गृहीतं तममन्यन्त तव पुत्राः सुबालिशाः ॥२९॥
29. saṁjaya uvāca ,
sāntaraṁ tu pratijñāte rājño droṇena nigrahe ,
gṛhītaṁ tamamanyanta tava putrāḥ subāliśāḥ.
29. sañjaya uvāca sa-antaram tu pratijñāte rājñaḥ droṇena
nigrahe gṛhītam tam amanyanta tava putrāḥ su-bāliśāḥ
29. sañjaya uvāca: tu rājñaḥ nigrahe droṇena sa-antaram pratijñāte (sati),
tava su-bāliśāḥ putrāḥ tam gṛhītam amanyanta
29. Sañjaya said: But when the king's capture was thus declared by Droṇa with a pause, your very foolish sons considered him already seized.
पाण्डवेषु हि सापेक्षं द्रोणं जानाति ते सुतः ।
ततः प्रतिज्ञास्थैर्यार्थं स मन्त्रो बहुलीकृतः ॥३०॥
30. pāṇḍaveṣu hi sāpekṣaṁ droṇaṁ jānāti te sutaḥ ,
tataḥ pratijñāsthairyārthaṁ sa mantro bahulīkṛtaḥ.

30. Your son certainly knows that Droṇa is sympathetic towards the Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, in order to confirm his pledge, that plan was widely publicized.
ततो दुर्योधनेनापि ग्रहणं पाण्डवस्य तत् ।
सैन्यस्थानेषु सर्वेषु व्याघोषितमरिंदम ॥३१॥
31. tato duryodhanenāpi grahaṇaṁ pāṇḍavasya tat ,
sainyasthāneṣu sarveṣu vyāghoṣitamariṁdama.

31. Then, O vanquisher of foes (arimdam), Duryodhana also had that capture of the Pāṇḍava loudly proclaimed in all military positions.
