Bṛhadaśva said: Then, when an auspicious time, a sacred lunar day, and a propitious moment had arrived, King Bhīma invited the rulers to the self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara).

Having heard that, all the kings, tormented by the god of love (Kāma), quickly arrived, desiring Damayantī.

The kings entered that great hall, which was splendid with golden pillars and adorned with an archway, just as lions enter a mountain.

All those kings, wearing fragrant garlands and dazzling jeweled earrings, were seated there on various thrones.

That royal assembly appeared full, like Bhogavatī teeming with serpents (nāgas), and completely full of great heroes (puruṣavyāghras), like a mountain cave teeming with tigers.

There, stout arms were seen, resembling iron clubs, shapely and very sleek, like five-headed serpents.

And the kings' faces, with beautiful hair-ends, charming and lovely noses, and auspicious features, shone like stars in the sky.

Then Damayantī, with her beautiful face, entered the assembly hall, captivating the eyes and minds of the kings with her splendor.

The gaze of those great-souled (mahātman) kings fell upon her limbs and became fixed right there, and did not move as they watched.

Then, as the names of the kings were being recited, O Bhārata, Bhīmī saw five men who appeared to have identical forms.

11.
After seeing all of them standing there with indistinguishable forms, the princess of Vidarbha (Vaidarbhī) then, due to her doubt, could not recognize King Nala. Indeed, whomever of them she saw, him she took to be King Nala.

The beautiful princess (bhāminī), thinking with her intellect, then pondered: "How indeed can I recognize the gods? How can I discern King Nala?"

Thus deliberating, that princess of Vidarbha (Vaidarbhī), greatly distressed, recalled the signs of the gods (devaliṅgāni) that she had heard about, O Bhārata.

Having considered it in many ways and pondered again and again, she regarded taking refuge in the gods as the opportune moment.

Having offered salutations (namaskāra) with both speech and mind, she, with folded hands and trembling, spoke this to the gods.

O Bhārata, then suddenly, a cry of 'Alas! Alas!' was uttered by the kings. And by the astonished gods and great sages, a sound of 'Excellent! Excellent!' was spoken, praising King Nala.

Yama, for his part, bestowed the essence of food and the highest stability in his adherence to natural law (dharma). The Lord of Waters (Varuṇa) granted Nala (naiṣadha) the very intrinsic nature (bhāva) of waters wherever he desired.

All of them (the gods) gave him a garland rich in excellent fragrance and also a pair of boons. Having thus bestowed these boons upon Nala, those gods returned to heaven.

Though he was already of glorious renown, the king, having obtained that jewel among women, enjoyed himself with her, just as Indra, the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra, delights with Śacī.

The wise one also performed the Horse Vedic ritual (Aśvamedha) and many other Vedic rituals (kratu) which were accompanied by ample ritual fees (dakṣiṇa), just like Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa.

And again, Nala, resembling a god, sported with Damayantī in charming forests and groves.

Thus, that king, who was both a performer of Vedic rituals (yajña) and the lord of the earth, protected the earth, which was replete with wealth, while also enjoying himself.
