राम उवाच ।
ममापराधात्तैः क्षुद्रैर्हतस्त्वं तात बालिशैः ।
कार्तवीर्यस्य दायादैर्वने मृग इवेषुभिः ॥१॥
1. rāma uvāca ,
mamāparādhāttaiḥ kṣudrairhatastvaṁ tāta bāliśaiḥ ,
kārtavīryasya dāyādairvane mṛga iveṣubhiḥ.

bāliśaiḥ kārtavīryasya dāyādaiḥ vane mṛgaḥ iva iṣubhiḥ
1. Rāma said: 'O father, due to my offense, you have been killed by those vile, foolish heirs of Kārtavīrya, just like a deer (mṛga) in the forest is killed by arrows.'
धर्मज्ञस्य कथं तात वर्तमानस्य सत्पथे ।
मृत्युरेवंविधो युक्तः सर्वभूतेष्वनागसः ॥२॥
2. dharmajñasya kathaṁ tāta vartamānasya satpathe ,
mṛtyurevaṁvidho yuktaḥ sarvabhūteṣvanāgasaḥ.
2. dharmajñasya katham tāta vartamānasya satpathe
mṛtyuḥ evaṃvidhaḥ yuktaḥ sarvabhūteṣu anāgasaḥ
2. O father, how can such a death be appropriate for one who understands the (dharma) natural law, who treads the path of righteousness, and who is innocent towards all creatures?
किं नु तैर्न कृतं पापं यैर्भवांस्तपसि स्थितः ।
अयुध्यमानो वृद्धः सन्हतः शरशतैः शितैः ॥३॥
3. kiṁ nu tairna kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yairbhavāṁstapasi sthitaḥ ,
ayudhyamāno vṛddhaḥ sanhataḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ.
3. kim nu taiḥ na kṛtam pāpam yaiḥ bhavān tapasi sthitaḥ
ayudhyamānaḥ vṛddhaḥ san hataḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ
3. What sin indeed was not committed by those who killed you - an old man who was not fighting - with hundreds of sharp arrows, while you were engaged in severe austerities (tapas)?
किं नु ते तत्र वक्ष्यन्ति सचिवेषु सुहृत्सु च ।
अयुध्यमानं धर्मज्ञमेकं हत्वानपत्रपाः ॥४॥
4. kiṁ nu te tatra vakṣyanti saciveṣu suhṛtsu ca ,
ayudhyamānaṁ dharmajñamekaṁ hatvānapatrapāḥ.
4. kim nu te tatra vakṣyanti saciveṣu suhṛtsu ca
ayudhyamānam dharmajñam ekam hatvā anapatrapāḥ
4. What indeed will those shameless ones say there, among their ministers and friends, after they have killed a solitary man who was not fighting and was a knower of dharma (natural law)?
अकृतव्रण उवाच ।
विलप्यैवं स करुणं बहु नानाविधं नृप ।
प्रेतकार्याणि सर्वाणि पितुश्चक्रे महातपाः ॥५॥
5. akṛtavraṇa uvāca ,
vilapyaivaṁ sa karuṇaṁ bahu nānāvidhaṁ nṛpa ,
pretakāryāṇi sarvāṇi pituścakre mahātapāḥ.
5. akṛtavraṇaḥ uvāca vilapya evam saḥ karuṇam bahu nānāvidham
nṛpa pretakāryāṇi sarvāṇi pituḥ cakre mahātapaḥ
5. Akṛtavraṇa said: "Having lamented in this piteous and diverse manner, O King, that great ascetic (mahātapāḥ) performed all the funeral rites for his father."
ददाह पितरं चाग्नौ रामः परपुरंजयः ।
प्रतिजज्ञे वधं चापि सर्वक्षत्रस्य भारत ॥६॥
6. dadāha pitaraṁ cāgnau rāmaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ ,
pratijajñe vadhaṁ cāpi sarvakṣatrasya bhārata.
6. dadāha pitaram ca agnau rāmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ
pratijajñe vadham ca api sarvakṣatrasya bhārata
6. Rāma, the conqueror of enemy cities, cremated his father in the fire. And, O Bhārata, he also vowed to slay all kṣatriyas.
संक्रुद्धोऽतिबलः शूरः शस्त्रमादाय वीर्यवान् ।
जघ्निवान्कार्तवीर्यस्य सुतानेकोऽन्तकोपमः ॥७॥
7. saṁkruddho'tibalaḥ śūraḥ śastramādāya vīryavān ,
jaghnivānkārtavīryasya sutāneko'ntakopamaḥ.
7. saṅkruddhaḥ atibalaḥ śūraḥ śastram ādāya vīryavān
jaghanivān kārtavīryasya sutān ekaḥ antakopamaḥ
7. Greatly enraged, exceedingly powerful, heroic, and mighty, he (Paraśurāma) took up his weapon and alone, resembling the god of death (Antaka), killed the sons of Kārtavīrya.
तेषां चानुगता ये च क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ ।
तांश्च सर्वानवामृद्नाद्रामः प्रहरतां वरः ॥८॥
8. teṣāṁ cānugatā ye ca kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha ,
tāṁśca sarvānavāmṛdnādrāmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ.
8. teṣām ca anugatāḥ ye ca kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha
tān ca sarvān avāmṛdnāt rāmaḥ praharatām varaḥ
8. O best of kṣatriyas, Rāma, the foremost of warriors, annihilated all those kṣatriyas (warriors) who had followed them (Kārtavīrya's sons).
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवीं कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां प्रभुः ।
समन्तपञ्चके पञ्च चकार रुधिरह्रदान् ॥९॥
9. triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivīṁ kṛtvā niḥkṣatriyāṁ prabhuḥ ,
samantapañcake pañca cakāra rudhirahradān.
9. triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivīm kṛtvā niḥkṣatriyām
prabhuḥ samantapañcake pañca cakāra rudhirahradān
9. Having made the earth devoid of kṣatriyas (warriors) twenty-one times, the powerful lord (Paraśurāma) created five lakes of blood in Samantapañcaka.
स तेषु तर्पयामास पितॄन्भृगुकुलोद्वहः ।
साक्षाद्ददर्श चर्चीकं स च रामं न्यवारयत् ॥१०॥
10. sa teṣu tarpayāmāsa pitṝnbhṛgukulodvahaḥ ,
sākṣāddadarśa carcīkaṁ sa ca rāmaṁ nyavārayat.
10. saḥ teṣu tarpayāmāsa pitṝn bhṛgukulodvahaḥ
sākṣāt dadarśa ca ṛcīkam saḥ ca rāmam nyavārayat
10. He, the exalted one of the Bhṛgu family, then propitiated his ancestors in those (lakes of blood). He also directly saw Ṛcīka (his grandfather), and Ṛcīka restrained Rāma (Paraśurāma).
ततो यज्ञेन महता जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान् ।
तर्पयामास देवेन्द्रमृत्विग्भ्यश्च महीं ददौ ॥११॥
11. tato yajñena mahatā jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān ,
tarpayāmāsa devendramṛtvigbhyaśca mahīṁ dadau.
11. tataḥ yajñena mahatā jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān
tarpayāmāsa devendram ṛtvigbhyaḥ ca mahīm dadau
11. Thereafter, the mighty Jamadagnya (Parashurama) satisfied the lord of gods (Indra) with a great Vedic ritual (yajña), and he also gave the earth to the priests.
वेदीं चाप्यददद्धैमीं कश्यपाय महात्मने ।
दशव्यामायतां कृत्वा नवोत्सेधां विशां पते ॥१२॥
12. vedīṁ cāpyadadaddhaimīṁ kaśyapāya mahātmane ,
daśavyāmāyatāṁ kṛtvā navotsedhāṁ viśāṁ pate.
12. vedīm ca api adadat haimīm kaśyapāya mahātmane
daśavyāmāyatām kṛtvā navotsedhām viśām pate
12. O lord of the people, having made it ten "vyāmas" long and nine "utsedhas" high, he also gave a golden altar to the great-souled Kashyapa.
तां कश्यपस्यानुमते ब्राह्मणाः खण्डशस्तदा ।
व्यभजंस्तेन ते राजन्प्रख्याताः खाण्डवायनाः ॥१३॥
13. tāṁ kaśyapasyānumate brāhmaṇāḥ khaṇḍaśastadā ,
vyabhajaṁstena te rājanprakhyātāḥ khāṇḍavāyanāḥ.
13. tām kaśyapasya anumate brāhmaṇāḥ khaṇḍaśaḥ tadā
vyabhajan tena te rājan prakhyātāḥ khāṇḍavāyanāḥ
13. Then, O king, with Kashyapa's consent, those brahmins divided that (altar) into pieces. Due to this, they became known as the famous Khaṇḍavāyanas.
स प्रदाय महीं तस्मै कश्यपाय महात्मने ।
अस्मिन्महेन्द्रे शैलेन्द्रे वसत्यमितविक्रमः ॥१४॥
14. sa pradāya mahīṁ tasmai kaśyapāya mahātmane ,
asminmahendre śailendre vasatyamitavikramaḥ.
14. saḥ pradāya mahīm tasmai kaśyapāya mahātmane
asmin mahendre śailendre vasati amitavikramaḥ
14. Having given that earth to the great-souled Kashyapa, he (Parashurama), who is of immeasurable prowess, now resides on this Mahendra, the king of mountains.
एवं वैरमभूत्तस्य क्षत्रियैर्लोकवासिभिः ।
पृथिवी चापि विजिता रामेणामिततेजसा ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ vairamabhūttasya kṣatriyairlokavāsibhiḥ ,
pṛthivī cāpi vijitā rāmeṇāmitatejasā.
15. evam vairam abhūt tasya kṣatriyaiḥ lokavāsibhiḥ
pṛthivī ca api vijitā rāmeṇa amitatejasā
15. Thus, animosity arose for him (Paraśurāma) with the kṣatriyas living in the world, and the earth was also conquered by Rāma of immeasurable prowess.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततश्चतुर्दशीं रामः समयेन महामनाः ।
दर्शयामास तान्विप्रान्धर्मराजं च सानुजम् ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataścaturdaśīṁ rāmaḥ samayena mahāmanāḥ ,
darśayāmāsa tānviprāndharmarājaṁ ca sānujam.
16. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ caturdaśīṃ rāmaḥ samayena
mahāmanāḥ darśayām āsa tān viprān dharmarājaṃ ca sānujam
16. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, at the appointed time on the fourteenth day, the magnanimous Rāma showed those Brahmins and Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira) with his younger brothers.
स तमानर्च राजेन्द्रो भ्रातृभिः सहितः प्रभुः ।
द्विजानां च परां पूजां चक्रे नृपतिसत्तमः ॥१७॥
17. sa tamānarca rājendro bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ prabhuḥ ,
dvijānāṁ ca parāṁ pūjāṁ cakre nṛpatisattamaḥ.
17. sa tam ānarca rājendraḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ prabhuḥ
dvijānāṃ ca parāṃ pūjām cakre nṛpatisattamaḥ
17. That lord, the chief of kings (Yudhiṣṭhira), accompanied by his brothers, honored him (Paraśurāma). The best among kings also offered supreme reverence to the Brahmins.
अर्चयित्वा जामदग्न्यं पूजितस्तेन चाभिभूः ।
महेन्द्र उष्य तां रात्रिं प्रययौ दक्षिणामुखः ॥१८॥
18. arcayitvā jāmadagnyaṁ pūjitastena cābhibhūḥ ,
mahendra uṣya tāṁ rātriṁ prayayau dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ.
18. arcayitvā jāmadagnyaṃ pūjitaḥ tena ca abhibhūḥ
mahendra uṣya tāṃ rātriṃ prayayau dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ
18. After (Yudhiṣṭhira) had honored Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma), and he (Jāmadagnya), the mighty lord Mahendra, had been honored by him (Yudhiṣṭhira), (Paraśurāma), having stayed that night, departed facing south.
