Bhishma said: O mother, I will certainly tell you again the means for the propagation of the Bharata lineage. Listen to me as I recount it.

Vaiśampāyana said: Then, Satyavatī, with a faltering voice, and as if bashfully smiling, spoke these words to Bhīṣma.

Satyavatī said: "O mighty-armed one, O descendant of Bharata, what you say is indeed true. Out of trust in you, I will speak for the continuation of the family line. It is not possible for me to hide such a calamity from you."

5.
Satyavatī continued: "You alone are our guiding principle (dharma) in this family, you are the truth, and you are the supreme refuge. Therefore, having heard my words, please do what is appropriate next."

O righteous soul (dharmātman), my father, who embodied his intrinsic nature (dharma), owned a boat. Once, in my early youth, I went into that boat.

7.
Then, the supremely wise great sage Parāśara, who was the best among those who uphold their intrinsic nature (dharma), came to that boat, intending to cross the Yamunā river.

8.
Then, while being ferried across the Yamunā, that best among sages, overcome by desire, approached me and spoke many gentle and sweet words.

9.
O Bhārata, I was afraid of a curse and also afraid of my father. Promised such rare boons, I did not dare to refuse him.

10.
O Bhārata, having overpowered me, a young girl, with his spiritual power, he brought me under his control. He enveloped the world in darkness, just as if I were in a boat (covered by fog).

11.
Previously, I had a strong and repulsive fishy odor. The sage (muni) removed that and gave me this auspicious fragrance.

12.
Then that sage said to me, 'After abandoning my child, you will indeed remain a maiden on an island in this very river.'

13.
That great yogi (yoga practitioner), Pārāśarya, who was my son born of a maiden and was formerly known as Dvaipāyana, became a great sage.

14.
That venerable sage, who by his asceticism (tapas) arranged the four Vedas, attained in the world the state of 'Vyāsa' (Divider/Compiler), and also the state of 'Kṛṣṇa' (Black One) because of his dark complexion.

15.
O you of immeasurable splendor, he, who is truthful, devoted to tranquility (śama), and an ascetic (tapasvī) whose transgressions have been burnt away, has certainly been appointed by me and by you. He will beget an auspicious offspring in the wives of the brother.

Indeed, he told me there, 'Remember me in [your] undertakings (karma).' O mighty-armed Bhishma, I shall remember him if you desire.

Indeed, O Bhishma, with your permission, that great ascetic (Vyāsa) will certainly beget sons through the wives of Vichitravīrya.

When that great sage (Vyāsa) was mentioned, Bhishma, with folded hands, spoke: "Whoever correctly perceives these three - (natural law) [dharma], wealth, and desire...

19.
Whoever, having properly considered with wisdom and distinctly, wealth and its connections, (natural law) [dharma] and its connections, and desire and its connections, as well as their opposites, and then determines (his course) with discernment - that person is truly intelligent.

Indeed, this counsel spoken by your ladyship, which is consistent with (natural law) [dharma] and beneficial for our family, is the highest good and pleases me.

Then, O delight of the Kurus, after that vow had been made by Bhishma, Kāli (Satyavatī) indeed contemplated the sage Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa).

O delight of the Kurus, that intelligent one, having understood his mother's concern, and expounding the Vedas, appeared unnoticed in an instant.

The great sage Vyāsa, her first-born son, having sprinkled the distressed mother with water and having paid his respects to her, spoke these words.

After he was seated, his mother Satyavati, having inquired about his unwavering well-being, looked at him and then immediately said the following.

28.
O sage, children are born as common (to both) mother and father. Just as the father is their master, so too is the mother; there is no doubt about this.

O Brahmarshi, you are ordained by the Creator as my first son, just as Vichitravirya is my younger son.

Just as Bhishma is indeed the son from the father (Shantanu), so too are you, O son, from the mother (me), the brother of Vichitravirya - or so you may consider.

This son of Shantanu (Bhishma), who truly upholds truth and possesses true valor, does not apply his mind to (having) offspring, nor similarly to the governance of the kingdom.

Vyāsa said: O Satyavatī, you understand both the higher and the lower (dharma). Moreover, O knower of natural law (dharma), your intellect is firmly dedicated to natural law (dharma).

37.
Therefore, by your command, keeping natural law (dharma) as the primary reason, I shall fulfill your desire, for this is indeed an ancient tradition.

I shall bestow sons upon the brother, sons who will be equal to Mitra and Varuṇa. Let those two goddesses perform the vow (vrata) that I have prescribed here.

They (the two goddesses) should perform it appropriately for a year; thereafter, they will become purified. Indeed, no woman who has not observed a vow (vrata) should ever approach me.

Vaiśampāyana said: "Desiring their union, the sage thus disappeared. Then, the queen (devī), approaching her daughter-in-law who was secluded, spoke beneficial words, infused with natural law (dharma) and profound meaning."
