वैशंपायन उवाच ।
विसृष्टास्वथ नारीषु धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ।
विललाप महाराज दुःखाद्दुःखतरं गतः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
visṛṣṭāsvatha nārīṣu dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ ,
vilalāpa mahārāja duḥkhādduḥkhataraṁ gataḥ.

vilalāpa.
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, after the women had been dismissed, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Ambikā's son, wept greatly, having gone from sorrow to even greater sorrow, O great king.
सधूममिव निःश्वस्य करौ धुन्वन्पुनः पुनः ।
विचिन्त्य च महाराज ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. sadhūmamiva niḥśvasya karau dhunvanpunaḥ punaḥ ,
vicintya ca mahārāja tato vacanamabravīt.
2. sadhūmam iva niḥśvasya karau dhunvan punaḥ
punaḥ vicintya ca mahārāja tataḥ vacanam abravīt
2. (saḥ) sadhūmam iva niḥśvasya,

2. Sighing as if with smoke, repeatedly shaking his hands, and having reflected, O great king, he then spoke these words.
अहो बत महद्दुःखं यदहं पाण्डवान्रणे ।
क्षेमिणश्चाव्ययांश्चैव त्वत्तः सूत शृणोमि वै ॥३॥
3. aho bata mahadduḥkhaṁ yadahaṁ pāṇḍavānraṇe ,
kṣemiṇaścāvyayāṁścaiva tvattaḥ sūta śṛṇomi vai.
3. aho bata mahat duḥkham yat aham pāṇḍavān raṇe
kṣemiṇaḥ ca avyayān ca eva tvattaḥ sūta śṛṇomi vai
3. aho bata,
mahat duḥkham,
yat aham rane pāṇḍavān kṣemiṇaḥ ca avyayān ca eva,
tvattaḥ,
sūta,
vai śṛṇomi.
3. Alas, what great sorrow it is that I, O Sūta, hear from you that the Pāṇḍavas are safe and unharmed in battle!
वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं सुदृढं मम ।
यच्छ्रुत्वा निहतान्पुत्रान्दीर्यते न सहस्रधा ॥४॥
4. vajrasāramayaṁ nūnaṁ hṛdayaṁ sudṛḍhaṁ mama ,
yacchrutvā nihatānputrāndīryate na sahasradhā.
4. vajrasāramayam nūnam hṛdayam sudṛḍham mama yat
śrutvā nihatān putrān dīryate na sahasradhā
4. nūnam mama hṛdayam vajrasāramayam sudṛḍham (asti),
yat putrān nihatān śrutvā sahasradhā na dīryate.
4. My heart must surely be exceedingly firm, made of diamond-essence, since, having heard that my sons were slain, it does not burst into a thousand pieces.
चिन्तयित्वा वचस्तेषां बालक्रीडां च संजय ।
अद्य श्रुत्वा हतान्पुत्रान्भृशं मे दीर्यते मनः ॥५॥
5. cintayitvā vacasteṣāṁ bālakrīḍāṁ ca saṁjaya ,
adya śrutvā hatānputrānbhṛśaṁ me dīryate manaḥ.
5. cintayitvā vacaḥ teṣām bālakrīḍām ca sañjaya
adya śrutvā hatān putrān bhṛśam me dīryate manaḥ
5. sañjaya teṣām vacaḥ bālakrīḍām ca cintayitvā
adya putrān hatān śrutvā me manaḥ bhṛśam dīryate
5. O Sanjaya, having reflected on their words and their childhood games, and having heard today that my sons have been killed, my heart is greatly distressed.
अन्धत्वाद्यदि तेषां तु न मे रूपनिदर्शनम् ।
पुत्रस्नेहकृता प्रीतिर्नित्यमेतेषु धारिता ॥६॥
6. andhatvādyadi teṣāṁ tu na me rūpanidarśanam ,
putrasnehakṛtā prītirnityameteṣu dhāritā.
6. andhatvāt yadi teṣām tu na me rūpanidarśanam
putrasnehakṛtā prītiḥ nityam eteṣu dhāritā
6. yadi andhatvāt tu me teṣām rūpanidarśanam na (asīt)

6. Even if, due to my blindness, I never had the sight of their forms, the affection (prīti) born of a father's love for his sons was always sustained in these boys.
बालभावमतिक्रान्तान्यौवनस्थांश्च तानहम् ।
मध्यप्राप्तांस्तथा श्रुत्वा हृष्ट आसं तथानघ ॥७॥
7. bālabhāvamatikrāntānyauvanasthāṁśca tānaham ,
madhyaprāptāṁstathā śrutvā hṛṣṭa āsaṁ tathānagha.
7. bālabhāvam atikrāntān yauvanasthān ca tān aham
madhyaprāptān tathā śrutvā hṛṣṭaḥ āsam tathā anagha
7. anagha aham tān bālabhāvam atikrāntān yauvanasthān
ca tathā madhyaprāptān śrutvā tathā hṛṣṭaḥ āsam
7. O sinless one (Sanjaya), having heard that they (my sons) had passed beyond childhood, entered youth, and then similarly reached middle age, I was consequently joyful.
तानद्य निहताञ्श्रुत्वा हृतैश्वर्यान्हृतौजसः ।
न लभे वै क्वचिच्छान्तिं पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुतः ॥८॥
8. tānadya nihatāñśrutvā hṛtaiśvaryānhṛtaujasaḥ ,
na labhe vai kvacicchāntiṁ putrādhibhirabhiplutaḥ.
8. tān adya nihatān śrutvā hṛtaiśvaryān hṛtaujasaḥ na
labhe vai kvacit śāntim putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutaḥ
8. adya tān nihatān hṛtaiśvaryān hṛtaujasaḥ (ca) śrutvā
putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutaḥ (aham) kvacit śāntim na vai labhe
8. Having heard today that those sons have been slain, deprived of their dominion and their strength, I find no peace (śānti) anywhere, truly overwhelmed by grief for my sons.
एह्येहि पुत्र राजेन्द्र ममानाथस्य सांप्रतम् ।
त्वया हीनो महाबाहो कां नु यास्याम्यहं गतिम् ॥९॥
9. ehyehi putra rājendra mamānāthasya sāṁpratam ,
tvayā hīno mahābāho kāṁ nu yāsyāmyahaṁ gatim.
9. ehi ehi putra rājendra mama anāthasya sāmpratam
tvayā hīnaḥ mahābāho kām nu yāsyāmi aham gatim
9. putra rājendra mahābāho,
ehi ehi! sāmpratam mama anāthasya tvayā hīnaḥ,
aham kām gatim nu yāsyāmi?
9. Come, come, my son, O best of kings, O mighty-armed one, to me, who am now helpless! Deprived of you, what fate indeed shall I meet?
गतिर्भूत्वा महाराज ज्ञातीनां सुहृदां तथा ।
अन्धं वृद्धं च मां वीर विहाय क्व नु गच्छसि ॥१०॥
10. gatirbhūtvā mahārāja jñātīnāṁ suhṛdāṁ tathā ,
andhaṁ vṛddhaṁ ca māṁ vīra vihāya kva nu gacchasi.
10. gatiḥ bhūtvā mahārāja jñātīnām suhṛdām tathā
andham vṛddham ca mām vīra vihāya kva nu gacchasi
10. mahārāja vīra,
jñātīnām suhṛdām tathā gatiḥ bhūtvā,
andham vṛddham ca mām vihāya kva nu gacchasi?
10. O great king, O hero, having been the refuge and support of your kinsmen and friends, where indeed are you going, abandoning me, who am blind and old?
सा कृपा सा च ते प्रीतिः सा च राजन्सुमानिता ।
कथं विनिहतः पार्थैः संयुगेष्वपराजितः ॥११॥
11. sā kṛpā sā ca te prītiḥ sā ca rājansumānitā ,
kathaṁ vinihataḥ pārthaiḥ saṁyugeṣvaparājitaḥ.
11. sā kṛpā sā ca te prītiḥ sā ca rājan sumānitā
katham vinihataḥ pārthaiḥ saṃyugeṣu aparājitaḥ
11. rājan,
sā kṛpā,
sā ca te prītiḥ,
sā ca sumānitā (āsīt); katham saṃyugeṣu aparājitaḥ tvam pārthaiḥ vinihataḥ (asi)?
11. O king, how can it be that you, who were unconquered (aparājita) in battles, and known for such compassion, such affection, and such high esteem, have been slain by the sons of Pṛthā (Pārtha)?
कथं त्वं पृथिवीपालान्भुक्त्वा तात समागतान् ।
शेषे विनिहतो भूमौ प्राकृतः कुनृपो यथा ॥१२॥
12. kathaṁ tvaṁ pṛthivīpālānbhuktvā tāta samāgatān ,
śeṣe vinihato bhūmau prākṛtaḥ kunṛpo yathā.
12. katham tvam pṛthivīpālān bhuktvā tāta samāgatān
śeṣe vinihataḥ bhūmau prākṛtaḥ kunṛpaḥ yathā
12. tāta,
katham tvam samāgatān pṛthivīpālān bhuktvā,
prākṛtaḥ kunṛpaḥ yathā,
bhūmau vinihataḥ śeṣe?
12. My dear son, how is it that you, after having ruled over the assembled kings (protectors of the earth), now lie slain on the ground like a common, wicked king?
को नु मामुत्थितं काल्ये तात तातेति वक्ष्यति ।
महाराजेति सततं लोकनाथेति चासकृत् ॥१३॥
13. ko nu māmutthitaṁ kālye tāta tāteti vakṣyati ,
mahārājeti satataṁ lokanātheti cāsakṛt.
13. kaḥ nu mām utthitam kālye tāta tāta iti vakṣyati
mahārāja iti satatam lokanātha iti ca asakṛt
13. Who indeed will address me as 'Father, oh Father' when I rise early in the morning? And who will constantly and repeatedly call me 'Great King' and 'Lord of the people'?
परिष्वज्य च मां कण्ठे स्नेहेनाक्लिन्नलोचनः ।
अनुशाधीति कौरव्य तत्साधु वद मे वचः ॥१४॥
14. pariṣvajya ca māṁ kaṇṭhe snehenāklinnalocanaḥ ,
anuśādhīti kauravya tatsādhu vada me vacaḥ.
14. pariṣvajya ca mām kaṇṭhe snehena aklinnalocanaḥ
anuśādhi iti kauravya tat sādhu vada me vacaḥ
14. And who will embrace me around the neck with affection and dry eyes, saying, 'Instruct me!'? O descendant of Kuru, tell me that proper advice for my situation.
ननु नामाहमश्रौषं वचनं तव पुत्रक ।
भूयसी मम पृथ्वीयं यथा पार्थस्य नो तथा ॥१५॥
15. nanu nāmāhamaśrauṣaṁ vacanaṁ tava putraka ,
bhūyasī mama pṛthvīyaṁ yathā pārthasya no tathā.
15. nanu nāma aham aśrauṣam vacanam tava putrak
bhūyasī mama pṛthvī iyam yathā pārthasya no tathā
15. Indeed, O dear son, I certainly heard your words: 'This earth of mine is more extensive; it is not so for Pārtha (Arjuna).'
भगदत्तः कृपः शल्य आवन्त्योऽथ जयद्रथः ।
भूरिश्रवाः सोमदत्तो महाराजोऽथ बाह्लिकः ॥१६॥
16. bhagadattaḥ kṛpaḥ śalya āvantyo'tha jayadrathaḥ ,
bhūriśravāḥ somadatto mahārājo'tha bāhlikaḥ.
16. bhagadattaḥ kṛpaḥ śalyaḥ āvantyaḥ atha jayadrathaḥ
bhūriśravāḥ somadattaḥ mahārājaḥ atha bāhlikaḥ
16. Bhagadatta, Kṛpa, Śalya, the King of Avanti, and then Jayadratha; Bhūriśravas, Somadatta, the Great King, and then Bāhlika.
अश्वत्थामा च भोजश्च मागधश्च महाबलः ।
बृहद्बलश्च काशीशः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ॥१७॥
17. aśvatthāmā ca bhojaśca māgadhaśca mahābalaḥ ,
bṛhadbalaśca kāśīśaḥ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ.
17. aśvatthāmā ca bhojaḥ ca māgadhaḥ ca mahābalaḥ
bṛhadbalaḥ ca kāśīśaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
17. aśvatthāmā ca bhojaḥ ca māgadhaḥ ca mahābalaḥ
bṛhadbalaḥ ca kāśīśaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
17. Aśvatthāmā, Bhoja, and the mighty Magadha; Bṛhadbala, the king of Kāśī; and also Śakuni, the son of Subala.
म्लेच्छाश्च बहुसाहस्राः शकाश्च यवनैः सह ।
सुदक्षिणश्च काम्बोजस्त्रिगर्ताधिपतिस्तथा ॥१८॥
18. mlecchāśca bahusāhasrāḥ śakāśca yavanaiḥ saha ,
sudakṣiṇaśca kāmbojastrigartādhipatistathā.
18. mlecchāḥ ca bahusāhasrāḥ śakāḥ ca yavanaiḥ saha
sudakṣiṇaḥ ca kāmbojaḥ trigartādhipatiḥ tathā
18. mlecchāḥ ca bahusāhasrāḥ śakāḥ ca yavanaiḥ saha
sudakṣiṇaḥ ca kāmbojaḥ trigartādhipatiḥ tathā
18. And Mlecchas numbering in many thousands; and Śakas along with Yavanas; and also Sudakṣiṇa, the king of Kamboja and lord of Trigarta.
भीष्मः पितामहश्चैव भारद्वाजोऽथ गौतमः ।
श्रुतायुश्चाच्युतायुश्च शतायुश्चापि वीर्यवान् ॥१९॥
19. bhīṣmaḥ pitāmahaścaiva bhāradvājo'tha gautamaḥ ,
śrutāyuścācyutāyuśca śatāyuścāpi vīryavān.
19. bhīṣmaḥ pitāmahaḥ ca eva bhāradvājaḥ atha gautamaḥ
śrutāyuḥ ca acyutāyuḥ ca śatāyuḥ ca api vīryavān
19. bhīṣmaḥ pitāmahaḥ ca eva bhāradvājaḥ atha gautamaḥ
śrutāyuḥ ca acyutāyuḥ ca śatāyuḥ ca api vīryavān
19. Bhīṣma, the great-grandfather; and indeed Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) and Gautama (Kṛpa); and Śrutāyu, Acyutāyu, and also the valorous Śatāyu.
जलसंधोऽथार्श्यशृङ्गी राक्षसश्चाप्यलायुधः ।
अलंबुसो महाबाहुः सुबाहुश्च महारथः ॥२०॥
20. jalasaṁdho'thārśyaśṛṅgī rākṣasaścāpyalāyudhaḥ ,
alaṁbuso mahābāhuḥ subāhuśca mahārathaḥ.
20. jalasandhaḥ atha ṛśyaśṛṅgī rākṣasaḥ ca api
alāyudhaḥ alambusaḥ mahābāhuḥ subāhuḥ ca mahārathaḥ
20. jalasandhaḥ atha ṛśyaśṛṅgī rākṣasaḥ ca api
alāyudhaḥ alambusaḥ mahābāhuḥ subāhuḥ ca mahārathaḥ
20. Jalasandha, and Ṛśyaśr̥ṅgī; and also the demon Alāyudha; Alambusa, the mighty-armed; and Subāhu, the great chariot-warrior.
एते चान्ये च बहवो राजानो राजसत्तम ।
मदर्थमुद्यताः सर्वे प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा रणे प्रभो ॥२१॥
21. ete cānye ca bahavo rājāno rājasattama ,
madarthamudyatāḥ sarve prāṇāṁstyaktvā raṇe prabho.
21. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ rājānaḥ rājasattama
madartham udyatāḥ sarve prāṇān tyaktvā raṇe prabho
21. rājasattama prabho ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ rājānaḥ
sarve madartham prāṇān tyaktvā raṇe udyatāḥ
21. O best of kings (rājasattama), and O lord (prabho), these and many other kings are all prepared to abandon their lives for my sake in battle.
येषां मध्ये स्थितो युद्धे भ्रातृभिः परिवारितः ।
योधयिष्याम्यहं पार्थान्पाञ्चालांश्चैव सर्वशः ॥२२॥
22. yeṣāṁ madhye sthito yuddhe bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
yodhayiṣyāmyahaṁ pārthānpāñcālāṁścaiva sarvaśaḥ.
22. yeṣām madhye sthitaḥ yuddhe bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ
yodhayiṣyāmi aham pārthān pāñcālān ca eva sarvaśaḥ
22. aham yeṣām madhye bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritaḥ yuddhe
sthitaḥ pārthān pāñcālān ca eva sarvaśaḥ yodhayiṣyāmi
22. Standing amidst them (my allies) in battle, surrounded by my brothers, I will certainly fight all of the Pārthas and the Pāñcālas.
चेदींश्च नृपशार्दूल द्रौपदेयांश्च संयुगे ।
सात्यकिं कुन्तिभोजं च राक्षसं च घटोत्कचम् ॥२३॥
23. cedīṁśca nṛpaśārdūla draupadeyāṁśca saṁyuge ,
sātyakiṁ kuntibhojaṁ ca rākṣasaṁ ca ghaṭotkacam.
23. cedīn ca nṛpaśārdūla draupadeyān ca saṃyuge
sātyakim kuntibhojam ca rākṣasam ca ghaṭotkacam
23. nṛpaśārdūla saṃyuge cedīn ca draupadeyān ca
sātyakim ca kuntibhojam ca rākṣasam ghaṭotkacam ca
23. O tiger among kings, in battle I will fight the Cedis and the sons of Draupadī; also Sātyaki, Kuntibhoja, and the demon Ghaṭotkaca.
एकोऽप्येषां महाराज समर्थः संनिवारणे ।
समरे पाण्डवेयानां संक्रुद्धो ह्यभिधावताम् ।
किं पुनः सहिता वीराः कृतवैराश्च पाण्डवैः ॥२४॥
24. eko'pyeṣāṁ mahārāja samarthaḥ saṁnivāraṇe ,
samare pāṇḍaveyānāṁ saṁkruddho hyabhidhāvatām ,
kiṁ punaḥ sahitā vīrāḥ kṛtavairāśca pāṇḍavaiḥ.
24. ekaḥ api eṣām mahārāja samarthaḥ
saṃnivāraṇe samare pāṇḍaveyānām
saṃkruddhaḥ hi abhidhāvatām kim punaḥ
sahitāḥ vīrāḥ kṛtavairāḥ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ
24. mahārāja eṣām ekaḥ api samare
saṃkruddhaḥ hi abhidhāvatām pāṇḍaveyānām
saṃnivāraṇe samarthaḥ punaḥ kṛtavairāḥ
ca pāṇḍavaiḥ sahitāḥ vīrāḥ kim
24. O great king, even one of these (warriors) is capable of holding back the Pāṇḍavas as they rush forth in battle, especially when enraged. What then to say when these heroes are united and have made (such) enmity with the Pāṇḍavas?
अथ वा सर्व एवैते पाण्डवस्यानुयायिभिः ।
योत्स्यन्ति सह राजेन्द्र हनिष्यन्ति च तान्मृधे ॥२५॥
25. atha vā sarva evaite pāṇḍavasyānuyāyibhiḥ ,
yotsyanti saha rājendra haniṣyanti ca tānmṛdhe.
25. atha vā sarve eva ete pāṇḍavasya anuyāyibhiḥ
yotsyanti saha rājendra haniṣyanti ca tān mṛdhe
25. rājendra atha vā ete sarve eva pāṇḍavasya
anuyāyibhiḥ saha yotsyanti ca tān mṛdhe haniṣyanti
25. Or indeed, all of these [our warriors], O King (Rajendra), will fight alongside the followers of the Pandava and will kill them in battle.
कर्णस्त्वेको मया सार्धं निहनिष्यति पाण्डवान् ।
ततो नृपतयो वीराः स्थास्यन्ति मम शासने ॥२६॥
26. karṇastveko mayā sārdhaṁ nihaniṣyati pāṇḍavān ,
tato nṛpatayo vīrāḥ sthāsyanti mama śāsane.
26. karṇaḥ tu ekaḥ mayā sārdham nihaniṣyati pāṇḍavān
tataḥ nṛpatayaḥ vīrāḥ sthāsyanti mama śāsane
26. tu ekaḥ karṇaḥ mayā sārdham pāṇḍavān nihaniṣyati
tataḥ vīrāḥ nṛpatayaḥ mama śāsane sthāsyanti
26. However, Karna alone, along with me, will kill the Pandavas. Then, the heroic kings will stand under my command.
यश्च तेषां प्रणेता वै वासुदेवो महाबलः ।
न स संनह्यते राजन्निति मामब्रवीद्वचः ॥२७॥
27. yaśca teṣāṁ praṇetā vai vāsudevo mahābalaḥ ,
na sa saṁnahyate rājanniti māmabravīdvacaḥ.
27. yaḥ ca teṣām praṇetā vai vāsudevaḥ mahābalaḥ
na saḥ saṃnabyate rājan iti mām abravīt vacaḥ
27. rājan yaḥ ca teṣām vai praṇetā mahābalaḥ
vāsudevaḥ saḥ na saṃnabyate iti vacaḥ mām abravīt
27. And he who is their leader, the greatly powerful Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), will not prepare for battle. This word, O King (Rajendra), was spoken to me.
तस्याहं वदतः सूत बहुशो मम संनिधौ ।
युक्तितो ह्यनुपश्यामि निहतान्पाण्डवान्मृधे ॥२८॥
28. tasyāhaṁ vadataḥ sūta bahuśo mama saṁnidhau ,
yuktito hyanupaśyāmi nihatānpāṇḍavānmṛdhe.
28. tasya aham vadataḥ sūta bahuśaḥ mama saṃnidhau
yuktitaḥ hi anupaśyāmi nihatān pāṇḍavān mṛdhe
28. sūta tasya mama saṃnidhau bahuśaḥ vadataḥ (sataḥ)
aham yuktitaḥ hi mṛdhe nihatān pāṇḍavān anupaśyāmi
28. O Charioteer (Sūta), while he (the one who spoke about Kṛṣṇa) was speaking many times in my presence, I logically foresee the Pandavas slain in battle.
तेषां मध्ये स्थिता यत्र हन्यन्ते मम पुत्रकाः ।
व्यायच्छमानाः समरे किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥२९॥
29. teṣāṁ madhye sthitā yatra hanyante mama putrakāḥ ,
vyāyacchamānāḥ samare kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
29. teṣām madhye sthitāḥ yatra hanyante mama putrakāḥ
vyāyacchamānāḥ samare kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
29. mama putrakāḥ yatra teṣām madhye sthitāḥ samare
vyāyacchamānāḥ hanyante kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
29. My sons, who stand among them and exert themselves in battle, are getting killed. What else can this be but destiny (bhāgadheyataḥ)?
भीष्मश्च निहतो यत्र लोकनाथः प्रतापवान् ।
शिखण्डिनं समासाद्य मृगेन्द्र इव जम्बुकम् ॥३०॥
30. bhīṣmaśca nihato yatra lokanāthaḥ pratāpavān ,
śikhaṇḍinaṁ samāsādya mṛgendra iva jambukam.

30. And where the mighty, glorious protector of the world (lokanāthaḥ), Bhishma, was killed, having encountered Shikhaṇḍin, (it was) like a lion (mṛgendra) [being overcome by] a jackal (jambuka).
द्रोणश्च ब्राह्मणो यत्र सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रपारगः ।
निहतः पाण्डवैः संख्ये किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३१॥
31. droṇaśca brāhmaṇo yatra sarvaśastrāstrapāragaḥ ,
nihataḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saṁkhye kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.

31. And where Drona, the brahmin, who was skilled in all weapons and missiles, was killed by the Pāṇḍavas in battle. What else can this be but destiny (bhāgadheyataḥ)?
भूरिश्रवा हतो यत्र सोमदत्तश्च संयुगे ।
बाह्लीकश्च महाराज किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३२॥
32. bhūriśravā hato yatra somadattaśca saṁyuge ,
bāhlīkaśca mahārāja kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.

32. O great king, where Bhūriśravas was killed in battle, and Somadatta, and Bāhlīka. What else can this be but destiny (bhāgadheyataḥ)?
सुदक्षिणो हतो यत्र जलसंधश्च कौरवः ।
श्रुतायुश्चाच्युतायुश्च किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३३॥
33. sudakṣiṇo hato yatra jalasaṁdhaśca kauravaḥ ,
śrutāyuścācyutāyuśca kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
33. sudakṣiṇaḥ hataḥ yatra jalasandhaḥ ca kauravaḥ
śrutāyuḥ ca acyutāyuḥ ca kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ

33. Where Sudakṣiṇa was slain, and Jayasaṃdha, the Kuru, along with Śrutāyu and Acyutāyu. What else could this be but destiny?
बृहद्बलो हतो यत्र मागधश्च महाबलः ।
आवन्त्यो निहतो यत्र त्रिगर्तश्च जनाधिपः ।
संशप्तकाश्च बहवः किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३४॥
34. bṛhadbalo hato yatra māgadhaśca mahābalaḥ ,
āvantyo nihato yatra trigartaśca janādhipaḥ ,
saṁśaptakāśca bahavaḥ kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.

34. Where Bṛhadbala was slain, and the mighty king of Magadha. Where the king of Avanti was killed, and the ruler of Trigarta. And many Saṃśaptakas. What else could this be but destiny?
अलंबुसस्तथा राजन्राक्षसश्चाप्यलायुधः ।
आर्श्यशृङ्गश्च निहतः किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३५॥
35. alaṁbusastathā rājanrākṣasaścāpyalāyudhaḥ ,
ārśyaśṛṅgaśca nihataḥ kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
35. alaṃbusaḥ tathā rājan rākṣasaḥ ca api alāyudhaḥ
ārśyaśṛṅgaḥ ca nihataḥ kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
35. rājan tathā alaṃbusaḥ rākṣasaḥ ca api alāyudhaḥ
ca ārśyaśṛṅgaḥ nihataḥ kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
35. And similarly, O King, the Rākṣasa Alaṃbusa, and Alāyudha, and Ārṣyaśṛṅga were slain. What else could this be but destiny?
नारायणा हता यत्र गोपाला युद्धदुर्मदाः ।
म्लेच्छाश्च बहुसाहस्राः किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३६॥
36. nārāyaṇā hatā yatra gopālā yuddhadurmadāḥ ,
mlecchāśca bahusāhasrāḥ kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
36. nārāyaṇāḥ hatāḥ yatra gopālāḥ yuddhadurmadāḥ
mlecchāḥ ca bahusāhasrāḥ kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ

36. Where the Nārāyaṇas, those cowherds (gopālāḥ) maddened by battle, were slain, and many thousands of Mlecchas. What else could this be but destiny?
शकुनिः सौबलो यत्र कैतव्यश्च महाबलः ।
निहतः सबलो वीरः किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३७॥
37. śakuniḥ saubalo yatra kaitavyaśca mahābalaḥ ,
nihataḥ sabalo vīraḥ kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.

37. Where Shakuni, the son of Subala, that cunning (kaitavya) and mighty hero, was slain along with his forces, what else could it be but due to destiny (bhāgadheya)?
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च शूराः परिघबाहवः ।
निहता बहवो यत्र किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३८॥
38. rājāno rājaputrāśca śūrāḥ parighabāhavaḥ ,
nihatā bahavo yatra kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.

38. Where many kings, princes, and brave heroes with arms like maces (parighabāhavaḥ) were slain, what else could it be but due to destiny (bhāgadheya)?
नानादेशसमावृत्ताः क्षत्रिया यत्र संजय ।
निहताः समरे सर्वे किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥३९॥
39. nānādeśasamāvṛttāḥ kṣatriyā yatra saṁjaya ,
nihatāḥ samare sarve kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
39. nānādeśasamāvṛttāḥ kṣatriyāḥ yatra saṃjaya
nihatāḥ samare sarve kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ

39. O Sanjaya, where all the kshatriyas, assembled from various countries, were slain in battle, what else could it be but due to destiny (bhāgadheya)?
पुत्राश्च मे विनिहताः पौत्राश्चैव महाबलाः ।
वयस्या भ्रातरश्चैव किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥४०॥
40. putrāśca me vinihatāḥ pautrāścaiva mahābalāḥ ,
vayasyā bhrātaraścaiva kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.

40. My sons were utterly slain, and my mighty grandsons as well; my friends and brothers too (were killed); what else could it be but due to destiny (bhāgadheya)?
भागधेयसमायुक्तो ध्रुवमुत्पद्यते नरः ।
यश्च भाग्यसमायुक्तः स शुभं प्राप्नुयान्नरः ॥४१॥
41. bhāgadheyasamāyukto dhruvamutpadyate naraḥ ,
yaśca bhāgyasamāyuktaḥ sa śubhaṁ prāpnuyānnaraḥ.
41. bhāgadheyasamāyuktaḥ dhruvam utpadyate naraḥ yaḥ
ca bhāgyasamāyuktaḥ saḥ śubham prāpnuyāt naraḥ
41. yaḥ naraḥ bhāgadheyasamāyuktaḥ dhruvam utpadyate
ca yaḥ bhāgyasamāyuktaḥ saḥ naraḥ śubham prāpnuyāt
41. A person who is born endowed with their destined share (bhāgadheya) will certainly exist. And such a person, if also endowed with good fortune (bhāgya), will surely attain prosperity.
अहं वियुक्तः स्वैर्भाग्यैः पुत्रैश्चैवेह संजय ।
कथमद्य भविष्यामि वृद्धः शत्रुवशं गतः ॥४२॥
42. ahaṁ viyuktaḥ svairbhāgyaiḥ putraiścaiveha saṁjaya ,
kathamadya bhaviṣyāmi vṛddhaḥ śatruvaśaṁ gataḥ.
42. aham viyuktaḥ svaiḥ bhāgyaiḥ putraiḥ ca eva iha
sañjaya katham adya bhaviṣyāmi vṛddhaḥ śatruvaśam gataḥ
42. sañjaya aham svaiḥ bhāgyaiḥ putraiḥ ca eva iha viyuktaḥ
vṛddhaḥ śatruvaśam gataḥ adya katham bhaviṣyāmi
42. Sañjaya, how will I, old and having fallen into the power of my enemies, survive today, having been deprived of my own fortunes (bhāgya) and sons, right here?
नान्यदत्र परं मन्ये वनवासादृते प्रभो ।
सोऽहं वनं गमिष्यामि निर्बन्धुर्ज्ञातिसंक्षये ॥४३॥
43. nānyadatra paraṁ manye vanavāsādṛte prabho ,
so'haṁ vanaṁ gamiṣyāmi nirbandhurjñātisaṁkṣaye.
43. na anyat atra param manye vanavāsāt ṛte prabho
saḥ aham vanam gamiṣyāmi nirbandhuḥ jñātisaṃkṣaye
43. prabho atra vanavāsāt ṛte anyat param na manye
saḥ aham jñātisaṃkṣaye nirbandhuḥ vanam gamiṣyāmi
43. O Lord (prabhu), I consider nothing else here to be better than dwelling in the forest. Therefore, I, being without kinsmen due to the destruction of my relatives (jñāti-saṃkṣaya), shall go to the forest.
न हि मेऽन्यद्भवेच्छ्रेयो वनाभ्युपगमादृते ।
इमामवस्थां प्राप्तस्य लूनपक्षस्य संजय ॥४४॥
44. na hi me'nyadbhavecchreyo vanābhyupagamādṛte ,
imāmavasthāṁ prāptasya lūnapakṣasya saṁjaya.
44. na hi me anyat bhavet śreyaḥ vanābhyupagamāt
ṛte imām avasthām prāptasya lūnapakṣasya sañjaya
44. sañjaya imām avasthām prāptasya lūnapakṣasya me
vanābhyupagamāt ṛte anyat śreyaḥ na hi bhavet
44. Sañjaya, for me, having reached this state, like one whose wings are clipped, there is surely no other better course than resorting to the forest.
दुर्योधनो हतो यत्र शल्यश्च निहतो युधि ।
दुःशासनो विशस्तश्च विकर्णश्च महाबलः ॥४५॥
45. duryodhano hato yatra śalyaśca nihato yudhi ,
duḥśāsano viśastaśca vikarṇaśca mahābalaḥ.
45. duryodhanaḥ hataḥ yatra śalyaḥ ca nihataḥ yudhi
duḥśāsanaḥ viśastaḥ ca vikarṇaḥ ca mahābalaḥ
45. yatra duryodhanaḥ hataḥ,

ca duḥśāsanaḥ viśastaḥ,
ca mahābalaḥ vikarṇaḥ (hataḥ)
45. Where Duryodhana was slain, and Śalya was killed in battle; where Duḥśāsana was disemboweled, and the mighty Vikarṇa (was also killed).
कथं हि भीमसेनस्य श्रोष्येऽहं शब्दमुत्तमम् ।
एकेन समरे येन हतं पुत्रशतं मम ॥४६॥
46. kathaṁ hi bhīmasenasya śroṣye'haṁ śabdamuttamam ,
ekena samare yena hataṁ putraśataṁ mama.
46. katham hi bhīmasenasya śroṣye aham śabdam
uttamam ekena samare yena hatam putraśatam mama
46. katham hi aham bhīmasenasya uttamam śabdam
śroṣye yena ekena samare mama putraśatam hatam
46. How indeed shall I hear the triumphant roar of Bhīmasena, by whom alone in battle my hundred sons were slain?
असकृद्वदतस्तस्य दुर्योधनवधेन च ।
दुःखशोकाभिसंतप्तो न श्रोष्ये परुषा गिरः ॥४७॥
47. asakṛdvadatastasya duryodhanavadhena ca ,
duḥkhaśokābhisaṁtapto na śroṣye paruṣā giraḥ.
47. asakṛt vadataḥ tasya duryodhanavadhena ca
duḥkhaśokābhisaṃtaptaḥ na śroṣye paruṣāḥ giraḥ
47. duḥkhaśokābhisaṃtaptaḥ (aham) duryodhanavadhena
ca asakṛt vadataḥ tasya paruṣāḥ giraḥ na śroṣye
47. Intensely distressed by sorrow and grief due to the slaying of Duryodhana, I shall not hear his (Bhīmasena's) harsh words spoken repeatedly.
एवं स शोकसंतप्तः पार्थिवो हतबान्धवः ।
मुहुर्मुहुर्मुह्यमानः पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुतः ॥४८॥
48. evaṁ sa śokasaṁtaptaḥ pārthivo hatabāndhavaḥ ,
muhurmuhurmuhyamānaḥ putrādhibhirabhiplutaḥ.
48. evam saḥ śokasaṃtaptaḥ pārthivaḥ hatabāndhavaḥ
muhurmuhur muhyamānaḥ putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutaḥ
48. evam saḥ pārthivaḥ śokasaṃtaptaḥ hatabāndhavaḥ
putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutaḥ muhurmuhur muhyamānaḥ (āsīt)
48. Thus, that king (pārthiva), tormented by grief, whose kinsmen were slain, repeatedly fell into delusion, overwhelmed by mental anguish for his sons.
विलप्य सुचिरं कालं धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ।
दीर्घमुष्णं च निःश्वस्य चिन्तयित्वा पराभवम् ॥४९॥
49. vilapya suciraṁ kālaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ ,
dīrghamuṣṇaṁ ca niḥśvasya cintayitvā parābhavam.
49. vilapya suciram kālam dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ambikāsutaḥ
dīrgham uṣṇam ca niḥśvasya cintayitvā parābhavam

49. The son of Ambikā, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having lamented for a very long time, and having sighed deeply and hotly, contemplating the defeat,
दुःखेन महता राजा संतप्तो भरतर्षभ ।
पुनर्गावल्गणिं सूतं पर्यपृच्छद्यथातथम् ॥५०॥
50. duḥkhena mahatā rājā saṁtapto bharatarṣabha ,
punargāvalgaṇiṁ sūtaṁ paryapṛcchadyathātatham.
50. duḥkhena mahatā rājā santaptaḥ bharatarṣabha
punaḥ gāvalgaṇim sūtam paryapṛcchat yathātatham

50. O bull among the Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), scorched by immense grief, again asked the charioteer, Gavalgaṇa's son (Sanjaya), for the precise details.
भीष्मद्रोणौ हतौ श्रुत्वा सूतपुत्रं च पातितम् ।
सेनापतिं प्रणेतारं किमकुर्वत मामकाः ॥५१॥
51. bhīṣmadroṇau hatau śrutvā sūtaputraṁ ca pātitam ,
senāpatiṁ praṇetāraṁ kimakurvata māmakāḥ.

51. Having heard that Bhīṣma and Droṇa were slain, and the charioteer's son (Karṇa), their commander and leader, was felled, what did my people (māmakāḥ) then do?
यं यं सेनाप्रणेतारं युधि कुर्वन्ति मामकाः ।
अचिरेणैव कालेन तं तं निघ्नन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥५२॥
52. yaṁ yaṁ senāpraṇetāraṁ yudhi kurvanti māmakāḥ ,
acireṇaiva kālena taṁ taṁ nighnanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
52. yam yam senāpraṇetāram yudhi kurvanti māmakāḥ
acireṇa eva kālena tam tam nighnanti pāṇḍavāḥ
52. māmakāḥ yudhi yam yam senāpraṇetāram kurvanti
pāṇḍavāḥ tam tam acireṇa eva kālena nighnanti
52. Whomever among the army's leaders my people (māmakāḥ) appoint in battle, the Pāṇḍavas slay that very one within a very short time.
रणमूर्ध्नि हतो भीष्मः पश्यतां वः किरीटिना ।
एवमेव हतो द्रोणः सर्वेषामेव पश्यताम् ॥५३॥
53. raṇamūrdhni hato bhīṣmaḥ paśyatāṁ vaḥ kirīṭinā ,
evameva hato droṇaḥ sarveṣāmeva paśyatām.

53. Bhishma was killed by Arjuna on the battlefield while you were watching. Just so, Drona was also killed while all of you were watching.
एवमेव हतः कर्णः सूतपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ।
स राजकानां सर्वेषां पश्यतां वः किरीटिना ॥५४॥
54. evameva hataḥ karṇaḥ sūtaputraḥ pratāpavān ,
sa rājakānāṁ sarveṣāṁ paśyatāṁ vaḥ kirīṭinā.
54. evam eva hataḥ karṇaḥ sūtaputraḥ pratāpavān
saḥ rājakānām sarveṣām paśyatām vaḥ kirīṭinā
54. evam eva sūtaputraḥ pratāpavān karṇaḥ saḥ

54. Similarly, the mighty Karna, the son of Sūta, was killed by Arjuna while all you kings were watching.
पूर्वमेवाहमुक्तो वै विदुरेण महात्मना ।
दुर्योधनापराधेन प्रजेयं विनशिष्यति ॥५५॥
55. pūrvamevāhamukto vai vidureṇa mahātmanā ,
duryodhanāparādhena prajeyaṁ vinaśiṣyati.
55. pūrvam eva aham uktaḥ vai vidureṇa mahātmanā
duryodhanāparādhena prajā iyam vinaśiṣyati
55. aham pūrvam eva mahātmanā vidureṇa vai uktaḥ
iyam prajā duryodhanāparādhena vinaśiṣyati
55. Indeed, I was told previously by the great-souled Vidura: 'These people will perish because of Duryodhana's offense.'
केचिन्न सम्यक्पश्यन्ति मूढाः सम्यक्तथापरे ।
तदिदं मम मूढस्य तथाभूतं वचः स्म ह ॥५६॥
56. kecinna samyakpaśyanti mūḍhāḥ samyaktathāpare ,
tadidaṁ mama mūḍhasya tathābhūtaṁ vacaḥ sma ha.
56. kecit na samyak paśyanti mūḍhāḥ samyak tathā apare
tat idam mama mūḍhasya tathābhūtam vacaḥ sma ha
56. kecit mūḍhāḥ na samyak paśyanti tathā apare samyak
tat idam mūḍhasya mama vacaḥ tathābhūtam sma ha
56. Some deluded people do not see clearly, while others do perceive correctly. Therefore, these words of mine, a deluded person, have indeed come to pass as foretold.
यदब्रवीन्मे धर्मात्मा विदुरो दीर्घदर्शिवान् ।
तत्तथा समनुप्राप्तं वचनं सत्यवादिनः ॥५७॥
57. yadabravīnme dharmātmā viduro dīrghadarśivān ,
tattathā samanuprāptaṁ vacanaṁ satyavādinaḥ.
57. yat abrāvīt me dharmātmā viduraḥ dīrghadarśivān
tat tathā samanūprāptam vacanam satyavādinaḥ
57. dharmātmā dīrghadarśivān satyavādinaḥ viduraḥ

57. What the righteous-minded (dharmātmā) Vidura, the far-sighted one, told me, that very word of the truth-teller has indeed come to pass exactly as he said.
दैवोपहतचित्तेन यन्मयापकृतं पुरा ।
अनयस्य फलं तस्य ब्रूहि गावल्गणे पुनः ॥५८॥
58. daivopahatacittena yanmayāpakṛtaṁ purā ,
anayasya phalaṁ tasya brūhi gāvalgaṇe punaḥ.
58. daivaupahatacittena yat mayā apakṛtam purā
anayasya phalam tasya brūhi gāvalgaṇe punaḥ
58. gāvalgaṇe mayā daivaupahatacittena purā yat
apakṛtam tasya anayasya phalam punaḥ brūhi
58. What was done wrongly by me in the past, with my mind afflicted by destiny, O Gāvalgaṇa, tell me again the consequence of that wrongdoing.
को वा मुखमनीकानामासीत्कर्णे निपातिते ।
अर्जुनं वासुदेवं च को वा प्रत्युद्ययौ रथी ॥५९॥
59. ko vā mukhamanīkānāmāsītkarṇe nipātite ,
arjunaṁ vāsudevaṁ ca ko vā pratyudyayau rathī.
59. kaḥ vā mukham anīkānām āsīt karṇe nipātite
arjunam vāsudevam ca kaḥ vā pratyudyayau rathī
59. karṇe nipātite anīkānām mukham kaḥ vā āsīt ca
kaḥ vā rathī arjunam vāsudevam ca pratyudyayau
59. Who, indeed, became the leader of the armies when Karṇa was slain? And who was the charioteer (rathī) who went forth to confront Arjuna and Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa)?
केऽरक्षन्दक्षिणं चक्रं मद्रराजस्य संयुगे ।
वामं च योद्धुकामस्य के वा वीरस्य पृष्ठतः ॥६०॥
60. ke'rakṣandakṣiṇaṁ cakraṁ madrarājasya saṁyuge ,
vāmaṁ ca yoddhukāmasya ke vā vīrasya pṛṣṭhataḥ.
60. ke arakṣan dakṣiṇam cakram madrarājasya saṃyuge
vāmam ca yoddhukāmasya ke vā vīrasya pṛṣṭhataḥ
60. saṃyuge ke madrarājasya dakṣiṇam cakram arakṣan
ca yoddhukāmasya vīrasya vāmam ca ke vā pṛṣṭhataḥ
60. Who protected the right wheel of the king of Madras (Śalya) in battle? And who (guarded) the left (wheel) of that warrior (vīra) eager to fight, and who, indeed, stood behind him?
कथं च वः समेतानां मद्रराजो महाबलः ।
निहतः पाण्डवैः संख्ये पुत्रो वा मम संजय ॥६१॥
61. kathaṁ ca vaḥ sametānāṁ madrarājo mahābalaḥ ,
nihataḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saṁkhye putro vā mama saṁjaya.

61. O Sañjaya, tell me, how was your mighty King of Madra, who was assembled with you all, slain by the Pāṇḍavas in battle? And what about my son [Duryodhana]?
ब्रूहि सर्वं यथातत्त्वं भरतानां महाक्षयम् ।
यथा च निहतः संख्ये पुत्रो दुर्योधनो मम ॥६२॥
62. brūhi sarvaṁ yathātattvaṁ bharatānāṁ mahākṣayam ,
yathā ca nihataḥ saṁkhye putro duryodhano mama.

yathā ca nihataḥ saṃkhye putraḥ duryodhanaḥ mama
62. sarvaṃ yathātattvaṃ bharatānām mahākṣayam brūhi

62. Tell me everything truthfully about the great destruction of the Bhāratas, and how my son Duryodhana was slain in battle.
पाञ्चालाश्च यथा सर्वे निहताः सपदानुगाः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च द्रौपद्याः पञ्च चात्मजाः ॥६३॥
63. pāñcālāśca yathā sarve nihatāḥ sapadānugāḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca draupadyāḥ pañca cātmajāḥ.

dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca draupadyāḥ pañca ca ātmajāḥ
63. ca yathā sarve sapadānugāḥ pāñcālāḥ nihatāḥ (ca yathā)
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca draupadyāḥ pañca ca ātmajāḥ (nihatāḥ)
63. And how were all the Pañcālas, along with their followers, slain? How also were Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, and Draupadī's five sons [slain]?
पाण्डवाश्च यथा मुक्तास्तथोभौ सात्वतौ युधि ।
कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च भारद्वाजस्य चात्मजः ॥६४॥
64. pāṇḍavāśca yathā muktāstathobhau sātvatau yudhi ,
kṛpaśca kṛtavarmā ca bhāradvājasya cātmajaḥ.
64. pāṇḍavāḥ ca yathā muktāḥ tathā ubhau sātvatau yudhi
kṛpaḥ ca kṛtavarmā ca bhāradvājasya ca ātmajaḥ
64. ca yathā pāṇḍavāḥ muktāḥ tathā ca ubhau sātvatau yudhi
kṛpaḥ ca kṛtavarmā ca bhāradvājasya ca ātmajaḥ (muktāḥ)
64. And how were the Pāṇḍavas spared? And how were both Sātvatas [Kṛṣṇa and Sātyaki] spared in battle? And what about Kṛpa, Kṛtavarmā, and the son of Bhāradvāja (Aśvatthāmā)?
यद्यथा यादृशं चैव युद्धं वृत्तं च सांप्रतम् ।
अखिलं श्रोतुमिच्छामि कुशलो ह्यसि संजय ॥६५॥
65. yadyathā yādṛśaṁ caiva yuddhaṁ vṛttaṁ ca sāṁpratam ,
akhilaṁ śrotumicchāmi kuśalo hyasi saṁjaya.
65. yat yathā yādṛśam ca eva yuddham vṛttam ca sāmpratam
akhilam śrotum icchāmi kuśalaḥ hi asi saṃjaya
65. saṃjaya yat yathā yādṛśam ca eva yuddham vṛttam ca
sāmpratam akhilam śrotum icchāmi hi asi kuśalaḥ
65. Sanjaya, I wish to hear everything about the battle - what it was like, what has transpired, and what is currently happening - for you are indeed skilled.
