वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तं दृष्ट्वा क्लीबवेषेण रथस्थं नरपुंगवम् ।
शमीमभिमुखं यान्तं रथमारोप्य चोत्तरम् ॥१॥

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: And, after mounting Uttara onto the chariot, (Arjuna), that best of men, was seen in a eunuch's guise on the chariot, going towards the śamī tree.
भीष्मद्रोणमुखास्तत्र कुरूणां रथसत्तमाः ।
वित्रस्तमनसः सर्वे धनंजयकृताद्भयात् ॥२॥

2. bhīṣmadroṇamukhāstatra kurūṇāṁ rathasattamāḥ ,

There, all the foremost chariot-warriors of the Kurus, led by Bhīṣma and Droṇa, had their minds terrified by the fear caused by Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
तानवेक्ष्य हतोत्साहानुत्पातानपि चाद्भुतान् ।
गुरुः शस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठो भारद्वाजोऽभ्यभाषत ॥३॥

3. tānavekṣya hatotsāhānutpātānapi cādbhutān ,

Seeing them dispirited and also the strange portents, Droṇa, the preceptor (guru) and foremost among weapon-bearers, spoke.
चलाश्च वाताः संवान्ति रूक्षाः परुषनिःस्वनाः ।
भस्मवर्णप्रकाशेन तमसा संवृतं नभः ॥४॥

4. calāśca vātāḥ saṁvānti rūkṣāḥ paruṣaniḥsvanāḥ ,
bhasmavarṇaprakāśena tamasā saṁvṛtaṁ nabhaḥ.

The winds blow unsteadily, rough and with harsh sounds. The sky is enveloped in darkness with an ash-colored glow.
रूक्षवर्णाश्च जलदा दृश्यन्तेऽद्भुतदर्शनाः ।
निःसरन्ति च कोशेभ्यः शस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥५॥
निःसरन्ति च कोशेभ्यः शस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥५॥
5. rūkṣavarṇāśca jaladā dṛśyante'dbhutadarśanāḥ ,
niḥsaranti ca kośebhyaḥ śastrāṇi vividhāni ca.

rūkṣa-varṇāḥ ca jaladāḥ dṛśyante adbhuta-darśanāḥ

The clouds appear of rough color and strange appearance. And various weapons emerge from their scabbards.
शिवाश्च विनदन्त्येता दीप्तायां दिशि दारुणाः ।
हयाश्चाश्रूणि मुञ्चन्ति ध्वजाः कम्पन्त्यकम्पिताः ॥६॥
हयाश्चाश्रूणि मुञ्चन्ति ध्वजाः कम्पन्त्यकम्पिताः ॥६॥
6. śivāśca vinadantyetā dīptāyāṁ diśi dāruṇāḥ ,
hayāścāśrūṇi muñcanti dhvajāḥ kampantyakampitāḥ.

And these terrifying jackals howl in the blazing direction. Horses shed tears, and banners, though unshaken (by wind), tremble.
यादृशान्यत्र रूपाणि संदृश्यन्ते बहून्यपि ।
यत्ता भवन्तस्तिष्ठन्तु स्याद्युद्धं समुपस्थितम् ॥७॥

7. yādṛśānyatra rūpāṇi saṁdṛśyante bahūnyapi ,
yattā bhavantastiṣṭhantu syādyuddhaṁ samupasthitam.

Even though many such forms are visible here, all of you should remain vigilant, for war might be at hand.
रक्षध्वमपि चात्मानं व्यूहध्वं वाहिनीमपि ।
वैशसं च प्रतीक्षध्वं रक्षध्वं चापि गोधनम् ॥८॥
वैशसं च प्रतीक्षध्वं रक्षध्वं चापि गोधनम् ॥८॥
8. rakṣadhvamapi cātmānaṁ vyūhadhvaṁ vāhinīmapi ,
vaiśasaṁ ca pratīkṣadhvaṁ rakṣadhvaṁ cāpi godhanam.

rakṣadhvam api ca ātmānam vyūhadhvam vāhinīm api

Protect yourselves (ātman) and also deploy the army. Await the impending slaughter, and also guard the cattle.
एष वीरो महेष्वासः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
आगतः क्लीबवेषेण पार्थो नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥९॥

9. eṣa vīro maheṣvāsaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
āgataḥ klībaveṣeṇa pārtho nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ.

This hero, a great archer, the foremost among all weapon-bearers, has arrived in the disguise of a eunuch. This is Arjuna (Pārtha); there is no doubt about it.
स एष पार्थो विक्रान्तः सव्यसाची परंतपः ।
नायुद्धेन निवर्तेत सर्वैरपि मरुद्गणैः ॥१०॥
नायुद्धेन निवर्तेत सर्वैरपि मरुद्गणैः ॥१०॥
10. sa eṣa pārtho vikrāntaḥ savyasācī paraṁtapaḥ ,
nāyuddhena nivarteta sarvairapi marudgaṇaiḥ.
nāyuddhena nivarteta sarvairapi marudgaṇaiḥ.

saḥ eṣaḥ pārthaḥ vikrāntaḥ savyasācī parantapaḥ
na ayuddhena nivarteta sarvaiḥ api marudgaṇaiḥ
na ayuddhena nivarteta sarvaiḥ api marudgaṇaiḥ
10.
That very Arjuna (Pārtha) is mighty, ambidextrous (Savyasācī), and a tormentor of foes (Parantapa). He would not retreat without a battle, even if he were to face all the Maruts.
क्लेशितश्च वने शूरो वासवेन च शिक्षितः ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नो योत्स्यते नात्र संशयः ॥११॥

11. kleśitaśca vane śūro vāsavena ca śikṣitaḥ ,
amarṣavaśamāpanno yotsyate nātra saṁśayaḥ.

kleśitaḥ ca vane śūraḥ vāsavena ca śikṣitaḥ

That hero, who was tormented in the forest and trained by Indra, has now become overcome by indignation. He will certainly fight; there is no doubt about this.
नेहास्य प्रतियोद्धारमहं पश्यामि कौरवाः ।
महादेवोऽपि पार्थेन श्रूयते युधि तोषितः ॥१२॥

12. nehāsya pratiyoddhāramahaṁ paśyāmi kauravāḥ ,
mahādevo'pi pārthena śrūyate yudhi toṣitaḥ.

na iha asya pratiyoddhāram aham paśyāmi kauravāḥ
mahādevaḥ api pārthena śrūyate yudhi toṣitaḥ

O Kauravas, I do not see anyone who can contend with him here. It is said that even Mahadeva was propitiated by Partha in battle.
कर्ण उवाच ।
सदा भवान्फल्गुनस्य गुणैरस्मान्विकत्थसे ।
न चार्जुनः कला पूर्णा मम दुर्योधनस्य वा ॥१३॥
सदा भवान्फल्गुनस्य गुणैरस्मान्विकत्थसे ।
न चार्जुनः कला पूर्णा मम दुर्योधनस्य वा ॥१३॥
13. karṇa uvāca ,
sadā bhavānphalgunasya guṇairasmānvikatthase ,
na cārjunaḥ kalā pūrṇā mama duryodhanasya vā.
sadā bhavānphalgunasya guṇairasmānvikatthase ,
na cārjunaḥ kalā pūrṇā mama duryodhanasya vā.

karṇa uvāca sadā bhavān phalgunasya guṇaiḥ asmān
vikatthase na ca arjunaḥ kalā pūrṇā mama duryodhanasya vā
vikatthase na ca arjunaḥ kalā pūrṇā mama duryodhanasya vā
13.
Karṇa said: You always boast to us about Arjuna's qualities. But Arjuna's abilities are not even a complete fraction of mine or Duryodhana's.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
यद्येष पार्थो राधेय कृतं कार्यं भवेन्मम ।
ज्ञाताः पुनश्चरिष्यन्ति द्वादशान्यान्हि वत्सरान् ॥१४॥
यद्येष पार्थो राधेय कृतं कार्यं भवेन्मम ।
ज्ञाताः पुनश्चरिष्यन्ति द्वादशान्यान्हि वत्सरान् ॥१४॥
14. duryodhana uvāca ,
yadyeṣa pārtho rādheya kṛtaṁ kāryaṁ bhavenmama ,
jñātāḥ punaścariṣyanti dvādaśānyānhi vatsarān.
yadyeṣa pārtho rādheya kṛtaṁ kāryaṁ bhavenmama ,
jñātāḥ punaścariṣyanti dvādaśānyānhi vatsarān.
14.
duryodhana uvāca yadi eṣaḥ pārthaḥ rādheya kṛtam kāryam
bhavet mama jñātāḥ punaḥ cariṣyanti dvādaśa anyān hi vatsarān
bhavet mama jñātāḥ punaḥ cariṣyanti dvādaśa anyān hi vatsarān
14.
Duryodhana said: "O son of Radha (Karṇa), if this Partha were to achieve my purpose, then my relatives (the Pandavas) would indeed wander for another twelve years."
अथैष कश्चिदेवान्यः क्लीबवेषेण मानवः ।
शरैरेनं सुनिशितैः पातयिष्यामि भूतले ॥१५॥
शरैरेनं सुनिशितैः पातयिष्यामि भूतले ॥१५॥
15. athaiṣa kaścidevānyaḥ klībaveṣeṇa mānavaḥ ,
śarairenaṁ suniśitaiḥ pātayiṣyāmi bhūtale.

atha eṣaḥ kaścit eva anyaḥ klībaveṣeṇa mānavaḥ

Now, this other person, who is merely a man disguised as an eunuch, I will make him fall to the ground with very sharp arrows.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्मिन्ब्रुवति तद्वाक्यं धार्तराष्ट्रे परंतपे ।
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपो द्रौणिः पौरुषं तदपूजयन् ॥१६॥
तस्मिन्ब्रुवति तद्वाक्यं धार्तराष्ट्रे परंतपे ।
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपो द्रौणिः पौरुषं तदपूजयन् ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasminbruvati tadvākyaṁ dhārtarāṣṭre paraṁtape ,
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpo drauṇiḥ pauruṣaṁ tadapūjayan.
tasminbruvati tadvākyaṁ dhārtarāṣṭre paraṁtape ,
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpo drauṇiḥ pauruṣaṁ tadapūjayan.

vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tasmin bruvati tat vākyam dhārtarāṣṭre
parantape bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ drauṇiḥ pauruṣam tat apūjayan
parantape bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ drauṇiḥ pauruṣam tat apūjayan
16.
Vaiśampāyana said: When that son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), the tormentor of foes, was speaking those words, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, and Droṇi (Aśvatthāmā) praised his valor.
