वैशंपायन उवाच ।
महायोगी ततः प्राह कृष्णद्वैपायनो मुनिः ।
पठस्व पुत्र भद्रं ते प्रीयतां ते महेश्वरः ॥१॥

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the great sage (muni), Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana, who was a great practitioner of yoga (mahāyogī), spoke: 'Recite this, my son! May good fortune be with you. May the Great Lord (Maheśvara) be pleased with you.'
पुरा पुत्र मया मेरौ तप्यता परमं तपः ।
पुत्रहेतोर्महाराज स्तव एषोऽनुकीर्तितः ॥२॥
2. purā putra mayā merau tapyatā paramaṁ tapaḥ ,
putrahetormahārāja stava eṣo'nukīrtitaḥ.

2. Formerly, O son, O great king, while I was performing supreme asceticism (tapas) on Mount Meru for the sake of a son, this hymn of praise was recited by me.
लब्धवानस्मि तान्कामानहं वै पाण्डुनन्दन ।
तथा त्वमपि शर्वाद्धि सर्वान्कामानवाप्स्यसि ॥३॥
3. labdhavānasmi tānkāmānahaṁ vai pāṇḍunandana ,
tathā tvamapi śarvāddhi sarvānkāmānavāpsyasi.
3. labdhavān asmi tān kāmān aham vai pāṇḍunandana
tathā tvam api śarvāt hi sarvān kāmān avāpsyasi
3. pāṇḍunandana aham vai tān kāmān labdhavān asmi
tathā tvam api hi śarvāt sarvān kāmān avāpsyasi
3. Indeed, I have obtained all those desires (kāma), O descendant of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍunandana). Similarly, you too will surely obtain all your desires (kāma) from Śarva.
चतुःशीर्षस्ततः प्राह शक्रस्य दयितः सखा ।
आलम्बायन इत्येव विश्रुतः करुणात्मकः ॥४॥
4. catuḥśīrṣastataḥ prāha śakrasya dayitaḥ sakhā ,
ālambāyana ityeva viśrutaḥ karuṇātmakaḥ.
4. caturśīrṣaḥ tataḥ prāha śakrasya dayitaḥ sakhā
ālambāyanaḥ iti eva viśrutaḥ karuṇātmakaḥ
4. tataḥ caturśīrṣaḥ śakrasya dayitaḥ sakhā
ālambāyanaḥ iti eva viśrutaḥ karuṇātmakaḥ prāha
4. Then, the four-headed one, the beloved friend of Indra (Śakra), renowned as Ālambāyana and compassionate by nature, spoke.
मया गोकर्णमासाद्य तपस्तप्त्वा शतं समाः ।
अयोनिजानां दान्तानां धर्मज्ञानां सुवर्चसाम् ॥५॥
5. mayā gokarṇamāsādya tapastaptvā śataṁ samāḥ ,
ayonijānāṁ dāntānāṁ dharmajñānāṁ suvarcasām.
5. mayā gokarṇam āsādya tapaḥ taptvā śatam samāḥ
ayonijānām dāntānām dharmajñānām suvarcasām
5. mayā gokarṇam āsādya śatam samāḥ tapaḥ taptvā

5. By me, having reached Gokarna and performed austerity (tapas) for a hundred years, (of the) not-womb-born, self-controlled, knowledgeable in natural law (dharma), and resplendent ones.
अजराणामदुःखानां शतवर्षसहस्रिणाम् ।
लब्धं पुत्रशतं शर्वात्पुरा पाण्डुनृपात्मज ॥६॥
6. ajarāṇāmaduḥkhānāṁ śatavarṣasahasriṇām ,
labdhaṁ putraśataṁ śarvātpurā pāṇḍunṛpātmaja.
6. ajarāṇām aduḥkhānām śatavarṣasahastriṇām
labdham putraśatam śarvāt purā pāṇḍunṛpātmaja
6. pāṇḍunṛpātmaja ajarāṇām aduḥkhānām
śatavarṣasahastriṇām putraśatam purā śarvāt labdham
6. Of the ageless, free from sorrow, and those living for a hundred thousand years – a hundred sons were obtained from Śarva (Shiva) long ago, O son of King Pāṇḍu!
वाल्मीकिश्चापि भगवान्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत ।
विवादे साम्नि मुनिभिर्ब्रह्मघ्नो वै भवानिति ।
उक्तः क्षणेन चाविष्टस्तेनाधर्मेण भारत ॥७॥
7. vālmīkiścāpi bhagavānyudhiṣṭhiramabhāṣata ,
vivāde sāmni munibhirbrahmaghno vai bhavāniti ,
uktaḥ kṣaṇena cāviṣṭastenādharmeṇa bhārata.
7. vālmīkiḥ ca api bhagavān yudhiṣṭhiram
abhāṣata vivāde sāmni munibhiḥ
brahmaghnaḥ vai bhavān iti uktaḥ
kṣaṇena ca āviṣṭaḥ tena adharmeṇa bhārata
7. bhagavān vālmīkiḥ ca api vivāde sāmni
munibhiḥ yudhiṣṭhiram abhāṣata (yat)
bhavān vai brahmaghnaḥ iti (saḥ) kṣaṇena
uktaḥ ca tena adharmeṇa āviṣṭaḥ bhārata
7. And the revered Vālmīki also addressed Yudhiṣṭhira: 'Indeed, in a dispute among sages or in a conciliation, you are a slayer of a Brahmin,' thus he (Yudhiṣṭhira) was told, and immediately, he was possessed by that unrighteousness (adharma), O Bhārata.
सोऽहमीशानमनघमस्तौषं शरणं गतः ।
मुक्तश्चास्म्यवशः पापात्ततो दुःखविनाशनः ।
आह मां त्रिपुरघ्नो वै यशस्तेऽग्र्यं भविष्यति ॥८॥
8. so'hamīśānamanaghamastauṣaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ ,
muktaścāsmyavaśaḥ pāpāttato duḥkhavināśanaḥ ,
āha māṁ tripuraghno vai yaśaste'gryaṁ bhaviṣyati.
8. saḥ aham īśānam anagham astauṣam śaraṇam
gataḥ muktaḥ ca asmi avaśaḥ pāpāt
tataḥ duḥkhavināśanaḥ āha mām tripuraghnaḥ
vai yaśaḥ te agryam bhaviṣyati
8. saḥ aham īśānam anagham astauṣam śaraṇam
gataḥ ca asmi muktaḥ avaśaḥ pāpāt
tataḥ duḥkhavināśanaḥ tripuraghnaḥ
vai āha mām te yaśaḥ agryam bhaviṣyati
8. I, having sought refuge in the faultless Īśāna (Śiva), praised him. And I, having been helpless due to sin, am freed from it; from that (liberation), I became a dispeller of sorrow. Then, Tripuraghna (Śiva) indeed said to me, "Your fame will be excellent."
जामदग्न्यश्च कौन्तेयमाह धर्मभृतां वरः ।
ऋषिमध्ये स्थितस्तात तपन्निव विभावसुः ॥९॥
9. jāmadagnyaśca kaunteyamāha dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
ṛṣimadhye sthitastāta tapanniva vibhāvasuḥ.
9. jāmadagnyaḥ ca kaunteyam āha dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
ṛṣimadhye sthitaḥ tāta tapan iva vibhāvasuḥ
9. ca jāmadagnyaḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ āha kaunteyam
ṛṣimadhye sthitaḥ tāta tapan iva vibhāvasuḥ
9. And Jāmadagnya, the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma), said to the son of Kunti. He stood amidst the sages, dear son, shining like the sun.
पितृविप्रवधेनाहमार्तो वै पाण्डवाग्रज ।
शुचिर्भूत्वा महादेवं गतवाञ्शरणं नृप ॥१०॥
10. pitṛvipravadhenāhamārto vai pāṇḍavāgraja ,
śucirbhūtvā mahādevaṁ gatavāñśaraṇaṁ nṛpa.
10. pitṛvipravadhena aham ārtaḥ vai pāṇḍavāgraja
śuciḥ bhūtvā mahādevam gatavān śaraṇam nṛpa
10. pāṇḍavāgraja nṛpa aham ārtaḥ vai pitṛvipravadhena
śuciḥ bhūtvā mahādevam gatavān śaraṇam
10. O eldest of the Pāṇḍavas, I was indeed distressed by the slaying of my Brahmin father. Having purified myself, O king, I resorted to Mahādeva (Śiva) for refuge.
नामभिश्चास्तुवं देवं ततस्तुष्टोऽभवद्भवः ।
परशुं च ददौ देवो दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि चैव मे ॥११॥
11. nāmabhiścāstuvaṁ devaṁ tatastuṣṭo'bhavadbhavaḥ ,
paraśuṁ ca dadau devo divyānyastrāṇi caiva me.
11. nāmabhiḥ ca astuvam devam tataḥ tuṣṭaḥ abhavat bhavaḥ
paraśum ca dadau devaḥ divyāni astrāṇi ca eva me
11. ca nāmabhiḥ astuvam devam tataḥ bhavaḥ tuṣṭaḥ abhavat
ca devaḥ dadau paraśum ca eva divyāni astrāṇi me
11. And I praised the god by (reciting) his names. Then Bhava (Śiva) became pleased. The god also gave me an axe and divine weapons.
पापं न भविता तेऽद्य अजेयश्च भविष्यसि ।
न ते प्रभविता मृत्युर्यशस्वी च भविष्यसि ॥१२॥
12. pāpaṁ na bhavitā te'dya ajeyaśca bhaviṣyasi ,
na te prabhavitā mṛtyuryaśasvī ca bhaviṣyasi.
12. pāpam na bhavitā te adya ajeyaḥ ca bhaviṣyasi
na te prabhavitā mṛtyuḥ yaśasvī ca bhaviṣyasi
12. No evil (pāpa) will come to you today, and you will be unconquerable. Death will not overpower you, and you will become famous.
आह मां भगवानेवं शिखण्डी शिवविग्रहः ।
यदवाप्तं च मे सर्वं प्रसादात्तस्य धीमतः ॥१३॥
13. āha māṁ bhagavānevaṁ śikhaṇḍī śivavigrahaḥ ,
yadavāptaṁ ca me sarvaṁ prasādāttasya dhīmataḥ.
13. āha mām bhagavān evam śikhaṇḍī śivavigrahaḥ yat
avāptam ca me sarvam prasādāt tasya dhīmataḥ
13. Lord (bhagavān) Śikhaṇḍī, who has the form of Śiva, spoke to me thus. All that I have attained is due to the grace of that intelligent one.
असितो देवलश्चैव प्राह पाण्डुसुतं नृपम् ।
शापाच्छक्रस्य कौन्तेय चितो धर्मोऽनशन्मम ।
तन्मे धर्मं यशश्चाग्र्यमायुश्चैवाददद्भवः ॥१४॥
14. asito devalaścaiva prāha pāṇḍusutaṁ nṛpam ,
śāpācchakrasya kaunteya cito dharmo'naśanmama ,
tanme dharmaṁ yaśaścāgryamāyuścaivādadadbhavaḥ.
14. asitaḥ devalaḥ ca eva prāha pāṇḍusutam
nṛpam śāpāt śakrasya kaunteya citaḥ
dharmaḥ anaśat mama tat me dharmam
yaśaḥ ca agryam āyuḥ ca eva ādadat bhavaḥ
14. Asita and Devala indeed said to the king, the son of Pāṇḍu: 'O son of Kuntī (kaunteya), due to the curse of Indra (śakra), my accumulated merit (dharma) was destroyed. Therefore, Bhava (Śiva) has granted me my merit (dharma), excellent fame, and also life.'
ऋषिर्गृत्समदो नाम शक्रस्य दयितः सखा ।
प्राहाजमीढं भगवान्बृहस्पतिसमद्युतिः ॥१५॥
15. ṛṣirgṛtsamado nāma śakrasya dayitaḥ sakhā ,
prāhājamīḍhaṁ bhagavānbṛhaspatisamadyutiḥ.
15. ṛṣiḥ gṛtsamadaḥ nāma śakrasya dayitaḥ sakhā
prāha ajamīḍham bhagavān bṛhaspatisamadyutiḥ
15. The sage (ṛṣi) named Gṛtsamada, a beloved friend of Indra (śakra), the glorious (bhagavān) one with splendor equal to Bṛhaspati, said to Ajamīḍha.
वसिष्ठो नाम भगवांश्चाक्षुषस्य मनोः सुतः ।
शतक्रतोरचिन्त्यस्य सत्रे वर्षसहस्रिके ।
वर्तमानेऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं साम्नि ह्युच्चारिते मया ॥१६॥
16. vasiṣṭho nāma bhagavāṁścākṣuṣasya manoḥ sutaḥ ,
śatakratoracintyasya satre varṣasahasrike ,
vartamāne'bravīdvākyaṁ sāmni hyuccārite mayā.
16. vasiṣṭhaḥ nāma bhagavān ca cākṣuṣasya
manoḥ sutaḥ śatakratoḥ acintyasya
satre varṣasahastrike vartamāne
abravīt vākyam sāmni hi uccārite mayā
16. Indeed, while the Sāman chant I had uttered was being performed during the thousand-year long Vedic ritual (sattra) of the venerable, inconceivable Śatakratu (Indra), the revered Vasiṣṭha, son of Cākṣuṣa Manu, spoke these words.
रथन्तरं द्विजश्रेष्ठ न सम्यगिति वर्तते ।
समीक्षस्व पुनर्बुद्ध्या हर्षं त्यक्त्वा द्विजोत्तम ।
अयज्ञवाहिनं पापमकार्षीस्त्वं सुदुर्मते ॥१७॥
17. rathantaraṁ dvijaśreṣṭha na samyagiti vartate ,
samīkṣasva punarbuddhyā harṣaṁ tyaktvā dvijottama ,
ayajñavāhinaṁ pāpamakārṣīstvaṁ sudurmate.
17. rathantaram dvijaśreṣṭha na samyak
iti vartate samīkṣasva punar buddhyā
harṣam tyaktvā dvijottama ayajñavāhinam
pāpam akārṣīḥ tvam sudurmate
17. O best among Brahmins (dvijottama), this Rathantara (Sāman) chant is not being performed correctly. Examine it again with your intelligence, abandoning your excitement. O very evil-minded one, you have committed a sin that disqualifies the Vedic ritual (yajña).
एवमुक्त्वा महाक्रोधात्प्राह रुष्टः पुनर्वचः ।
प्रज्ञया रहितो दुःखी नित्यं भीतो वनेचरः ।
दश वर्षसहस्राणि दशाष्टौ च शतानि च ॥१८॥
18. evamuktvā mahākrodhātprāha ruṣṭaḥ punarvacaḥ ,
prajñayā rahito duḥkhī nityaṁ bhīto vanecaraḥ ,
daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśāṣṭau ca śatāni ca.
18. evam uktvā mahākrodhāt prāha ruṣṭaḥ
punar vacaḥ prajñayā rahitaḥ duḥkhī
nityam bhītaḥ vanecaraḥ daśa
varṣasahastrāṇi daśa aṣṭau ca śatāni ca
18. Having spoken thus, enraged by great anger, he again uttered these words: 'Devoid of intelligence, sorrowful, always fearful, and wandering in the forest, you shall remain for ten thousand and eighteen hundred years (i.e., 11,800 years).'
नष्टपानीययवसे मृगैरन्यैश्च वर्जिते ।
अयज्ञीयद्रुमे देशे रुरुसिंहनिषेविते ।
भविता त्वं मृगः क्रूरो महादुःखसमन्वितः ॥१९॥
19. naṣṭapānīyayavase mṛgairanyaiśca varjite ,
ayajñīyadrume deśe rurusiṁhaniṣevite ,
bhavitā tvaṁ mṛgaḥ krūro mahāduḥkhasamanvitaḥ.
19. naṣṭapānīyayavase mṛgaiḥ anyaiḥ
ca varjite ayajñīyadrume deśe
rurusiṃhaniṣevite bhavitā tvam
mṛgaḥ krūraḥ mahāduḥkhasamanvitaḥ
19. You shall become a cruel deer, endowed with great suffering, in a region where water and grass are scarce, avoided by other deer, where trees are unfit for Vedic rituals (yajña), and which is frequented by ruru deer and lions.
तस्य वाक्यस्य निधने पार्थ जातो ह्यहं मृगः ।
ततो मां शरणं प्राप्तं प्राह योगी महेश्वरः ॥२०॥
20. tasya vākyasya nidhane pārtha jāto hyahaṁ mṛgaḥ ,
tato māṁ śaraṇaṁ prāptaṁ prāha yogī maheśvaraḥ.
20. tasya vākyasya nidhane pārtha jātaḥ hi aham mṛgaḥ
tataḥ mām śaraṇam prāptam prāha yogī maheśvaraḥ
20. pārtha tasya vākyasya nidhane aham mṛgaḥ hi jātaḥ
tataḥ śaraṇam prāptam mām yogī maheśvaraḥ prāha
20. O Pārtha, at the conclusion of his statement, I was indeed born as a deer. Then, the great lord, the yogi (maheśvara), spoke to me, who had sought refuge.
अजरश्चामरश्चैव भविता दुःखवर्जितः ।
साम्यं समस्तु ते सौख्यं युवयोर्वर्धतां क्रतुः ॥२१॥
21. ajaraścāmaraścaiva bhavitā duḥkhavarjitaḥ ,
sāmyaṁ samastu te saukhyaṁ yuvayorvardhatāṁ kratuḥ.
21. ajaraḥ ca amaraḥ ca eva bhavitā duḥkhavarjitaḥ
sāmyam samastu te saukhyam yuvayoḥ vardhatām kratuḥ
21. tvam ajaraḥ ca amaraḥ ca eva duḥkhavarjitaḥ bhavitā
te saukhyam sāmyam samastu yuvayoḥ kratuḥ vardhatām
21. You will be undecaying, immortal, and free from sorrow. May your happiness be of equanimity, and may the (Vedic ritual) (kratu) of both of you prosper.
अनुग्रहानेवमेष करोति भगवान्विभुः ।
परं धाता विधाता च सुखदुःखे च सर्वदा ॥२२॥
22. anugrahānevameṣa karoti bhagavānvibhuḥ ,
paraṁ dhātā vidhātā ca sukhaduḥkhe ca sarvadā.
22. anugrahān evam eṣaḥ karoti bhagavān vibhuḥ
param dhātā vidhātā ca sukhaduḥkhe ca sarvadā
22. evam eṣaḥ bhagavān vibhuḥ anugrahān karoti param
saḥ sarvadā sukhaduḥkhe dhātā ca vidhātā ca
22. Indeed, the venerable, all-pervading one (Bhagavān) bestows blessings in this manner. Furthermore, he is always the sustainer and the ordainer of joy and sorrow.
अचिन्त्य एष भगवान्कर्मणा मनसा गिरा ।
न मे तात युधिश्रेष्ठ विद्यया पण्डितः समः ॥२३॥
23. acintya eṣa bhagavānkarmaṇā manasā girā ,
na me tāta yudhiśreṣṭha vidyayā paṇḍitaḥ samaḥ.
23. acintyaḥ eṣaḥ bhagavān karmaṇā manasā girā na
me tāta yudhiśreṣṭha vidyayā paṇḍitaḥ samaḥ
23. eṣaḥ bhagavān karmaṇā manasā girā acintyaḥ
tāta yudhiśreṣṭha vidyayā paṇḍitaḥ na me samaḥ
23. This venerable (Bhagavān) is inconceivable by action (karma), mind, or speech. O dear one, O best among warriors, no scholar is my equal in knowledge.
जैगीषव्य उवाच ।
ममाष्टगुणमैश्वर्यं दत्तं भगवता पुरा ।
यत्नेनाल्पेन बलिना वाराणस्यां युधिष्ठिर ॥२४॥
24. jaigīṣavya uvāca ,
mamāṣṭaguṇamaiśvaryaṁ dattaṁ bhagavatā purā ,
yatnenālpena balinā vārāṇasyāṁ yudhiṣṭhira.
24. jaigīṣavyaḥ uvāca mama aṣṭaguṇam aiśvaryam dattam
bhagavatā purā yatnena alpena balinā vārāṇasyām yudhiṣṭhira
24. Jaigīṣavya said: "O Yudhiṣṭhira, in ancient times, in Vārāṇasī, eight-fold spiritual power (aiśvarya) was bestowed upon me by the revered Lord through a small, yet potent effort."
गार्ग्य उवाच ।
चतुःषष्ट्यङ्गमददात्कालज्ञानं ममाद्भुतम् ।
सरस्वत्यास्तटे तुष्टो मनोयज्ञेन पाण्डव ॥२५॥
25. gārgya uvāca ,
catuḥṣaṣṭyaṅgamadadātkālajñānaṁ mamādbhutam ,
sarasvatyāstaṭe tuṣṭo manoyajñena pāṇḍava.
25. gārgyaḥ uvāca caturṣaṣṭyaṅgam adadāt kālajñānam mama
adbhutam sarasvatyāḥ taṭe tuṣṭaḥ manoyajñena pāṇḍava
25. Gārgya said: "O Pāṇḍava, pleased on the bank of the Sarasvatī, he granted me the marvelous sixty-four-fold knowledge of time by means of a mental Vedic ritual (manoyajña)."
तुल्यं मम सहस्रं तु सुतानां ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ।
आयुश्चैव सपुत्रस्य संवत्सरशतायुतम् ॥२६॥
26. tulyaṁ mama sahasraṁ tu sutānāṁ brahmavādinām ,
āyuścaiva saputrasya saṁvatsaraśatāyutam.
26. tulyam mama sahasram tu sutānām brahmavādinām
āyuḥ ca eva saputrasya saṃvatsaraśatāyutam
26. “Indeed, I have a thousand sons who are expounders of the ultimate reality (brahman), all equal to me. And the lifespan of my son and myself extends to a million years."
पराशर उवाच ।
प्रसाद्याहं पुरा शर्वं मनसाचिन्तयं नृप ।
महातपा महातेजा महायोगी महायशाः ।
वेदव्यासः श्रियावासो ब्रह्मण्यः करुणात्मकः ॥२७॥
27. parāśara uvāca ,
prasādyāhaṁ purā śarvaṁ manasācintayaṁ nṛpa ,
mahātapā mahātejā mahāyogī mahāyaśāḥ ,
vedavyāsaḥ śriyāvāso brahmaṇyaḥ karuṇātmakaḥ.
27. parāśaraḥ uvāca prasādya aham purā
śarvam manasā acintayam nṛpa mahātapāḥ
mahātejāḥ mahāyogī mahāyaśāḥ vedavyāsaḥ
śriyāvāsaḥ brahmaṇyaḥ karuṇātmakaḥ
27. Parāśara said: "O King, having propitiated Śarva (Śiva) in ancient times, I conceived in my mind: 'May he be a great ascetic, of immense spiritual power, a supreme yogi, of great renown, Vedavyāsa, an abode of prosperity, devoted to the sacred, and compassionate in nature.'"
अपि नामेप्सितः पुत्रो मम स्याद्वै महेश्वरात् ।
इति मत्वा हृदि मतं प्राह मां सुरसत्तमः ॥२८॥
28. api nāmepsitaḥ putro mama syādvai maheśvarāt ,
iti matvā hṛdi mataṁ prāha māṁ surasattamaḥ.

28. The best among the gods, having considered in his heart, 'Indeed, may my desired son be born from Maheśvara,' then spoke this thought to me.
मयि संभवतस्तस्य फलात्कृष्णो भविष्यति ।
सावर्णस्य मनोः सर्गे सप्तर्षिश्च भविष्यति ॥२९॥
29. mayi saṁbhavatastasya phalātkṛṣṇo bhaviṣyati ,
sāvarṇasya manoḥ sarge saptarṣiśca bhaviṣyati.
29. mayi saṃbhavataḥ tasya phalāt kṛṣṇaḥ bhaviṣyati
sāvarṇasya manoḥ sarge saptarṣiḥ ca bhaviṣyati
29. mayi saṃbhavataḥ tasya phalāt kṛṣṇaḥ bhaviṣyati
ca sāvarṇasya manoḥ sarge saptarṣiḥ bhaviṣyati
29. From his birth in me, he will become Kṛṣṇa. And during the epoch of Sāvarṇa Manu, he will also be one of the Seven Sages (saptarṣi).
वेदानां च स वै व्यस्ता कुरुवंशकरस्तथा ।
इतिहासस्य कर्ता च पुत्रस्ते जगतो हितः ॥३०॥
30. vedānāṁ ca sa vai vyastā kuruvaṁśakarastathā ,
itihāsasya kartā ca putraste jagato hitaḥ.
30. vedānām ca saḥ vai vyastā kuruvaṃśakaraḥ tathā
itihāsasya kartā ca putraḥ te jagataḥ hitaḥ
30. saḥ vai vedānām vyastā ca kuruvaṃśakaraḥ tathā
te putraḥ ca itihāsasya kartā jagataḥ hitaḥ
30. Indeed, he will be the arranger of the Vedas, and the establisher of the Kuru lineage. Your son will also be the author of the epic histories (itihāsa) and a benefactor of the world.
भविष्यति महेन्द्रस्य दयितः स महामुनिः ।
अजरश्चामरश्चैव पराशर सुतस्तव ॥३१॥
31. bhaviṣyati mahendrasya dayitaḥ sa mahāmuniḥ ,
ajaraścāmaraścaiva parāśara sutastava.
31. bhaviṣyati mahendrasya dayitaḥ saḥ mahāmuniḥ
ajaraḥ ca amaraḥ ca eva parāśara sutaḥ tava
31. parāśara tava sutaḥ saḥ mahāmuniḥ mahendrasya
dayitaḥ ajaraḥ ca amaraḥ ca eva bhaviṣyati
31. And that great sage, your son, O Parāśara, will be dear to Mahendra (Indra), undecaying, and immortal.
एवमुक्त्वा स भगवांस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।
युधिष्ठिर महायोगी वीर्यवानक्षयोऽव्ययः ॥३२॥
32. evamuktvā sa bhagavāṁstatraivāntaradhīyata ,
yudhiṣṭhira mahāyogī vīryavānakṣayo'vyayaḥ.
32. evam uktvā sa bhagavān tatra eva antaradhīyata
yudhiṣṭhira mahāyogī vīryavān akṣayaḥ avyayaḥ
32. Having spoken thus, that venerable Lord (bhagavān), who was a great practitioner of yoga (yoga), powerful, imperishable, and immutable, disappeared right there, O Yudhishthira.
माण्डव्य उवाच ।
अचौरश्चौरशङ्कायां शूले भिन्नो ह्यहं यदा ।
तत्रस्थेन स्तुतो देवः प्राह मां वै महेश्वरः ॥३३॥
33. māṇḍavya uvāca ,
acauraścauraśaṅkāyāṁ śūle bhinno hyahaṁ yadā ,
tatrasthena stuto devaḥ prāha māṁ vai maheśvaraḥ.
33. māṇḍavyaḥ uvāca acauraḥ cauraśaṅkāyām śūle bhinnaḥ hi aham
yadā tatrasthena stutaḥ devaḥ prāha mām vai maheśvaraḥ
33. Maṇḍavya said: When I, innocent, was impaled on a stake due to suspicion of being a thief, the deity whom I praised while I was in that very state - Lord Maheśvara - indeed spoke to me.
मोक्षं प्राप्स्यसि शूलाच्च जीविष्यसि समार्बुदम् ।
रुजा शूलकृता चैव न ते विप्र भविष्यति ।
आधिभिर्व्याधिभिश्चैव वर्जितस्त्वं भविष्यसि ॥३४॥
34. mokṣaṁ prāpsyasi śūlācca jīviṣyasi samārbudam ,
rujā śūlakṛtā caiva na te vipra bhaviṣyati ,
ādhibhirvyādhibhiścaiva varjitastvaṁ bhaviṣyasi.
34. mokṣam prāpsyasi śūlāt ca jīviṣyasi
sama arbudam rujā śūlakṛtā ca eva na
te vipra bhaviṣyati ādhibhiḥ vyādhibhiḥ
ca eva varjitaḥ tvam bhaviṣyasi
34. You will attain liberation (mokṣa) from the stake, and you will live for a full arbuda (a very long period, like 100 million years). Furthermore, O Brahmin, the pain caused by the stake will no longer affect you. You will also be free from mental anxieties and physical ailments.
पादाच्चतुर्थात्संभूत आत्मा यस्मान्मुने तव ।
त्वं भविष्यस्यनुपमो जन्म वै सफलं कुरु ॥३५॥
35. pādāccaturthātsaṁbhūta ātmā yasmānmune tava ,
tvaṁ bhaviṣyasyanupamo janma vai saphalaṁ kuru.
35. pādāt caturthāt saṃbhūtaḥ ātmā yasmāt mune tava
tvam bhaviṣyasi anupamaḥ janma vai saphalam kuru
35. O sage (muni), since your true self (ātman) has arisen from the fourth part, you will become unequalled. Therefore, truly make your birth fruitful.
तीर्थाभिषेकं सफलं त्वमविघ्नेन चाप्स्यसि ।
स्वर्गं चैवाक्षयं विप्र विदधामि तवोर्जितम् ॥३६॥
36. tīrthābhiṣekaṁ saphalaṁ tvamavighnena cāpsyasi ,
svargaṁ caivākṣayaṁ vipra vidadhāmi tavorjitam.
36. tīrthābhiṣekam saphalam tvam avighnena ca āpsyasi
svargam ca eva akṣayam vipra vidadhāmi tava ūrjitam
36. vipra tvam saphalam tīrthābhiṣekam avighnena ca
āpsyasi ca eva tava ūrjitam akṣayam svargam vidadhāmi
36. You will achieve the successful holy bath at a sacred place without any impediment. And, O brahmin, I shall grant you a mighty and imperishable heaven.
एवमुक्त्वा तु भगवान्वरेण्यो वृषवाहनः ।
महेश्वरो महाराज कृत्तिवासा महाद्युतिः ।
सगणो दैवतश्रेष्ठस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥३७॥
37. evamuktvā tu bhagavānvareṇyo vṛṣavāhanaḥ ,
maheśvaro mahārāja kṛttivāsā mahādyutiḥ ,
sagaṇo daivataśreṣṭhastatraivāntaradhīyata.

37. Having spoken thus, O great king, the worshipful Lord (bhagavān) Maheśvara - the excellent one, whose vehicle is a bull, who wears a skin garment, and who possesses great radiance - along with his retinue, the foremost among the deities, vanished right there.
गालव उवाच ।
विश्वामित्राभ्यनुज्ञातो ह्यहं पितरमागतः ।
अब्रवीन्मां ततो माता दुःखिता रुदती भृशम् ॥३८॥
38. gālava uvāca ,
viśvāmitrābhyanujñāto hyahaṁ pitaramāgataḥ ,
abravīnmāṁ tato mātā duḥkhitā rudatī bhṛśam.
38. gālavaḥ uvāca viśvāmitrābhyanujñātaḥ hi aham pitaram
āgataḥ abravīt mām tataḥ mātā duḥkhitā rudatī bhṛśam

38. Gālava said: 'Indeed, having received permission from Viśvāmitra, I approached my father. Then, my sorrowful mother, weeping profusely, spoke to me.'
कौशिकेनाभ्यनुज्ञातं पुत्रं वेदविभूषितम् ।
न तात तरुणं दान्तं पिता त्वां पश्यतेऽनघ ॥३९॥
39. kauśikenābhyanujñātaṁ putraṁ vedavibhūṣitam ,
na tāta taruṇaṁ dāntaṁ pitā tvāṁ paśyate'nagha.
39. kauśikena abhyanujñātam putram vedavibhūṣitam
na tāta taruṇam dāntam pitā tvām paśyate anagha
39. tāta anagha pitā tvām kauśikena abhyanujñātam
vedavibhūṣitam taruṇam dāntam putram na paśyate
39. O dear one, O sinless one, your father does not see you - a son who has received permission from Kauśika (Viśvāmitra), who is adorned with Vedic knowledge, who is young and self-controlled.
श्रुत्वा जनन्या वचनं निराशो गुरुदर्शने ।
नियतात्मा महादेवमपश्यं सोऽब्रवीच्च माम् ॥४०॥
40. śrutvā jananyā vacanaṁ nirāśo gurudarśane ,
niyatātmā mahādevamapaśyaṁ so'bravīcca mām.

niyatātmā mahādevam apaśyam saḥ abravīt ca mām
40. jananyāḥ vacanam śrutvā,

40. Having heard my mother's words, and feeling hopeless about seeing my preceptor, I, with a controlled mind (ātman), saw Mahadeva, and he spoke to me.
पिता माता च ते त्वं च पुत्र मृत्युविवर्जिताः ।
भविष्यथ विश क्षिप्रं द्रष्टासि पितरं क्षये ॥४१॥
41. pitā mātā ca te tvaṁ ca putra mṛtyuvivarjitāḥ ,
bhaviṣyatha viśa kṣipraṁ draṣṭāsi pitaraṁ kṣaye.
41. pitā mātā ca te tvam ca putra mṛtyuvivarjitāḥ
bhaviṣyatha viśa kṣipram draṣṭā asi pitaram kṣaye
41. putra,
te pitā,
mātā ca,
tvam ca,

41. O son, your father, mother, and you will become free from death. Enter (into this state)! You will quickly see your father at the dissolution (of the universe).
अनुज्ञातो भगवता गृहं गत्वा युधिष्ठिर ।
अपश्यं पितरं तात इष्टिं कृत्वा विनिःसृतम् ॥४२॥
42. anujñāto bhagavatā gṛhaṁ gatvā yudhiṣṭhira ,
apaśyaṁ pitaraṁ tāta iṣṭiṁ kṛtvā viniḥsṛtam.
42. anujñātaḥ bhagavatā gṛham gatvā yudhiṣṭhira
apaśyam pitaram tāta iṣṭim kṛtvā viniḥsṛtam
42. yudhiṣṭhira,

42. O Yudhishthira, dear one, having been permitted by the revered one (Mahadeva), and having returned home, I saw my father, who had emerged after performing a Vedic ritual.
उपस्पृश्य गृहीत्वेध्मं कुशांश्च शरणाद्गुरून् ।
तान्विसृज्य च मां प्राह पिता सास्राविलेक्षणः ॥४३॥
43. upaspṛśya gṛhītvedhmaṁ kuśāṁśca śaraṇādgurūn ,
tānvisṛjya ca māṁ prāha pitā sāsrāvilekṣaṇaḥ.
43. upaspṛśya gṛhītvā idhmam kuśān ca śaraṇāt gurūn
tān visṛjya ca mām prāha pitā sāsrāvilakṣaṇaḥ
43. pitā sāsrāvilakṣaṇaḥ upaspṛśya,

śaraṇāt tān gurūn ca visṛjya,
mām prāha.
43. Having performed ablution, and having taken the fuel and kusha grass, and then dismissing those preceptors from the hermitage, my father, with eyes moist with tears, spoke to me.
प्रणमन्तं परिष्वज्य मूर्ध्नि चाघ्राय पाण्डव ।
दिष्ट्या दृष्टोऽसि मे पुत्र कृतविद्य इहागतः ॥४४॥
44. praṇamantaṁ pariṣvajya mūrdhni cāghrāya pāṇḍava ,
diṣṭyā dṛṣṭo'si me putra kṛtavidya ihāgataḥ.

diṣṭyā dṛṣṭaḥ asi me putra kṛtavidyaḥ iha āgataḥ

44. Having embraced him who was bowing down and kissed his head, [he said]: 'O Pāṇḍava, O son, fortunately you have come here, having completed your studies.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतान्यत्यद्भुतान्येव कर्माण्यथ महात्मनः ।
प्रोक्तानि मुनिभिः श्रुत्वा विस्मयामास पाण्डवः ॥४५॥
45. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etānyatyadbhutānyeva karmāṇyatha mahātmanaḥ ,
proktāni munibhiḥ śrutvā vismayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ.

45. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, having heard these exceedingly wondrous deeds of the great soul (mahātman) recounted by the sages (muni), the Pāṇḍava was amazed.
ततः कृष्णोऽब्रवीद्वाक्यं पुनर्मतिमतां वरः ।
युधिष्ठिरं धर्मनित्यं पुरुहूतमिवेश्वरः ॥४६॥
46. tataḥ kṛṣṇo'bravīdvākyaṁ punarmatimatāṁ varaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ dharmanityaṁ puruhūtamiveśvaraḥ.
46. tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ abravīt vākyam punaḥ matimatām varaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiram dharmanityam puruhūtam iva īśvaraḥ
46. tataḥ matimatām varaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ punaḥ dharmanityam
yudhiṣṭhiram vākyam abravīt īśvaraḥ puruhūtam iva
46. Then, Kṛṣṇa, the best among the intelligent, again spoke words to Yudhiṣṭhira, who was ever devoted to his intrinsic nature (dharma), just as the supreme lord (īśvara) [speaks] to Puruhūta (Indra).
आदित्यचन्द्रावनिलानलौ च द्यौर्भूमिरापो वसवोऽथ विश्वे ।
धातार्यमा शुक्रबृहस्पती च रुद्राः ससाध्या वरुणो वित्तगोपः ॥४७॥
47. ādityacandrāvanilānalau ca; dyaurbhūmirāpo vasavo'tha viśve ,
dhātāryamā śukrabṛhaspatī ca; rudrāḥ sasādhyā varuṇo vittagopaḥ.

47. The Sun and the Moon; the Wind and the Fire; the Sky, the Earth, and the Waters; the Vasus; and then the Viśvedevas; Dhātṛ, Aryaman, Śukra, and Bṛhaspati; the Rudras along with the Sādhyas; Varuṇa; and Kubera, the guardian of wealth.
ब्रह्मा शक्रो मारुतो ब्रह्म सत्यं वेदा यज्ञा दक्षिणा वेदवाहाः ।
सोमो यष्टा यच्च हव्यं हविश्च रक्षा दीक्षा नियमा ये च केचित् ॥४८॥
48. brahmā śakro māruto brahma satyaṁ; vedā yajñā dakṣiṇā vedavāhāḥ ,
somo yaṣṭā yacca havyaṁ haviśca; rakṣā dīkṣā niyamā ye ca kecit.

48. Brahmā, Indra, Vāyu, the Absolute (brahman), truth, the Vedas, the Vedic rituals (yajña), the sacrificial fees, and those who uphold the Vedas; Soma, the performer of Vedic rituals, and whatever oblations (havya) and (havi) are offered; protection, initiation, and whatever observances there may be.
स्वाहा वषड्ब्राह्मणाः सौरभेया धर्मं चक्रं कालचक्रं चरं च ।
यशो दमो बुद्धिमती स्थितिश्च शुभाशुभं मुनयश्चैव सप्त ॥४९॥
49. svāhā vaṣaḍbrāhmaṇāḥ saurabheyā; dharmaṁ cakraṁ kālacakraṁ caraṁ ca ,
yaśo damo buddhimatī sthitiśca; śubhāśubhaṁ munayaścaiva sapta.

49. Svāhā, Vaṣaṭ, Brahmins, the descendants of Surabhi (cows); the natural law (dharma), the wheel, the wheel of time, and that which is movable; fame, self-control, and intelligent stability; good and evil, and indeed the seven sages.
अग्र्या बुद्धिर्मनसा दर्शने च स्पर्शे सिद्धिः कर्मणां या च सिद्धिः ।
गणा देवानामूष्मपाः सोमपाश्च लेखाः सुयामास्तुषिता ब्रह्मकायाः ॥५०॥
50. agryā buddhirmanasā darśane ca; sparśe siddhiḥ karmaṇāṁ yā ca siddhiḥ ,
gaṇā devānāmūṣmapāḥ somapāśca; lekhāḥ suyāmāstuṣitā brahmakāyāḥ.

sparse siddhiḥ karmaṇām yā ca siddhiḥ
gaṇāḥ devānām ūṣmapāḥ somapāḥ ca

50. Foremost is the intellect (buddhi) through the mind (manas), and perfection (siddhi) in perception and touch; and whatever other perfection (siddhi) there is for actions (karma). The hosts of gods include the Ūṣmapās, the Somapās, and also the Lekhās, Suyāmas, Tuṣitas, and Brahmakāyās.
आभास्वरा गन्धपा दृष्टिपाश्च वाचा विरुद्धाश्च मनोविरुद्धाः ।
शुद्धाश्च निर्वाणरताश्च देवाः स्पर्शाशना दर्शपा आज्यपाश्च ॥५१॥
51. ābhāsvarā gandhapā dṛṣṭipāśca; vācā viruddhāśca manoviruddhāḥ ,
śuddhāśca nirvāṇaratāśca devāḥ; sparśāśanā darśapā ājyapāśca.

51. The Ābhāsvaras, the Gandhapās, and the Dṛṣṭipās; and those who are opposed by speech and those who are opposed by mind. Also, the pure gods who delight in liberation (nirvāṇa); the Sparśāśanās, the Darśapās, and the Ājyapās.
चिन्तागता ये च देवेषु मुख्या ये चाप्यन्ये देवताश्चाजमीढ ।
सुपर्णगन्धर्वपिशाचदानवा यक्षास्तथा पन्नगाश्चारणाश्च ॥५२॥
52. cintāgatā ye ca deveṣu mukhyā; ye cāpyanye devatāścājamīḍha ,
suparṇagandharvapiśācadānavā; yakṣāstathā pannagāścāraṇāśca.

52. O Ajamiḍha, those principal gods who are engrossed in thought, and also other deities, as well as Suparṇas, Gandharvas, Piśācas, Dānavas, Yakṣas, Pannagas (serpent deities), and Cāraṇas (celestial bards).
सूक्ष्मं स्थूलं मृदु यच्चाप्यसूक्ष्मं सुखं दुःखं सुखदुःखान्तरं च ।
सांख्यं योगं यत्पराणां परं च शर्वाज्जातं विद्धि यत्कीर्तितं मे ॥५३॥
53. sūkṣmaṁ sthūlaṁ mṛdu yaccāpyasūkṣmaṁ; sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ sukhaduḥkhāntaraṁ ca ,
sāṁkhyaṁ yogaṁ yatparāṇāṁ paraṁ ca; śarvājjātaṁ viddhi yatkīrtitaṁ me.
53. sūkṣmam sthūlam mṛdu yat ca api asūkṣmam
sukham duḥkham sukhaduḥkhāntaram
ca sāṅkhyam yogam yat parāṇām param ca
śarvāt jātam viddhi yat kīrtitam me

53. Know that the subtle, the gross, the soft, and also the un-subtle; happiness, sorrow, and the intermediate state between happiness and sorrow; (sāṃkhya) and (yoga); and that which is supreme even among the supreme - all these are born from Śarva, as has been declared by me.
तत्संभूता भूतकृतो वरेण्याः सर्वे देवा भुवनस्यास्य गोपाः ।
आविश्येमां धरणीं येऽभ्यरक्षन्पुरातनीं तस्य देवस्य सृष्टिम् ॥५४॥
54. tatsaṁbhūtā bhūtakṛto vareṇyāḥ; sarve devā bhuvanasyāsya gopāḥ ,
āviśyemāṁ dharaṇīṁ ye'bhyarakṣa;npurātanīṁ tasya devasya sṛṣṭim.
54. tatsambhūtāḥ bhūtakṛtaḥ vareṇyāḥ
sarve devāḥ bhuvanasya asya gopāḥ
āviśya imām dharaṇīm ye abhyarakṣan
purātanīm tasya devasya sṛṣṭim
54. ye tatsambhūtāḥ bhūtakṛtaḥ vareṇyāḥ
sarve devāḥ asya bhuvanasya
gopāḥ imām dharaṇīm āviśya tasya
devasya purātanīm sṛṣṭim abhyarakṣan
54. All these excellent gods, who are born from him (Śarva), are the creators of beings and the protectors of this world. Having entered this earth, they guarded the ancient creation of that god.
विचिन्वन्तं मनसा तोष्टुवीमि किंचित्तत्त्वं प्राणहेतोर्नतोऽस्मि ।
ददातु देवः स वरानिहेष्टानभिष्टुतो नः प्रभुरव्ययः सदा ॥५५॥
55. vicinvantaṁ manasā toṣṭuvīmi; kiṁcittattvaṁ prāṇahetornato'smi ,
dadātu devaḥ sa varāniheṣṭā;nabhiṣṭuto naḥ prabhuravyayaḥ sadā.
55. vicinvantam manasā toṣṭuvīmi kiṃcit
tattvam prāṇahetoḥ nataḥ asmi
dadātu devaḥ saḥ varān iha iṣṭān
abhiṣṭutaḥ naḥ prabhuḥ avyayaḥ sadā
55. manasā vicinvantam kiṃcit tattvam
toṣṭuvīmi prāṇahetoḥ nataḥ asmi
abhiṣṭutaḥ saḥ avyayaḥ prabhuḥ
devaḥ naḥ iha iṣṭān varān sadā dadātu
55. I eagerly desire to praise that subtle principle (tattva) which is sought by the mind. For the sake of life, I bow down. May that eternal, imperishable lord, praised by us, always grant the desired boons here.
इमं स्तवं संनियम्येन्द्रियाणि शुचिर्भूत्वा यः पुरुषः पठेत ।
अभग्नयोगो नियतोऽब्दमेकं स प्राप्नुयादश्वमेधे फलं यत् ॥५६॥
56. imaṁ stavaṁ saṁniyamyendriyāṇi; śucirbhūtvā yaḥ puruṣaḥ paṭheta ,
abhagnayogo niyato'bdamekaṁ; sa prāpnuyādaśvamedhe phalaṁ yat.
56. imam stavam saṃniamya indriyāṇi
śuciḥ bhūtvā yaḥ puruṣaḥ paṭhet
abhagnayogaḥ niyataḥ abdam ekam
saḥ prāpnuyāt aśvamedhe phalam yat
56. That person who, having controlled their senses and become pure, recites this hymn with unwavering discipline (yoga) for one year, attains the same reward (phala) that is obtained from an aśvamedha (Vedic ritual).
वेदान्कृत्स्नान्ब्राह्मणः प्राप्नुयाच्च जयेद्राजा पृथिवीं चापि कृत्स्नाम् ।
वैश्यो लाभं प्राप्नुयान्नैपुणं च शूद्रो गतिं प्रेत्य तथा सुखं च ॥५७॥
57. vedānkṛtsnānbrāhmaṇaḥ prāpnuyācca; jayedrājā pṛthivīṁ cāpi kṛtsnām ,
vaiśyo lābhaṁ prāpnuyānnaipuṇaṁ ca; śūdro gatiṁ pretya tathā sukhaṁ ca.
57. vedān kṛtsnān brāhmaṇaḥ prāpnuyāt ca
jayet rājā pṛthivīm ca api kṛtsnām
vaiśyaḥ lābham prāpnuyāt naipuṇam ca
śūdraḥ gatim pretya tathā sukham ca
57. A brahmin would attain all the Vedas, and a king would conquer the entire earth. A vaiśya would obtain profit and skill, and a śūdra would achieve a good state (gati) after death, as well as happiness.
स्तवराजमिमं कृत्वा रुद्राय दधिरे मनः ।
सर्वदोषापहं पुण्यं पवित्रं च यशस्विनम् ॥५८॥
58. stavarājamimaṁ kṛtvā rudrāya dadhire manaḥ ,
sarvadoṣāpahaṁ puṇyaṁ pavitraṁ ca yaśasvinam.
58. stavarājam imam kṛtvā rudrāya dadhire manaḥ
sarvadoṣāpaham puṇyam pavitram ca yaśasvinam
58. Having composed this excellent hymn for Rudra, they fixed their minds upon it, [knowing it to be] the remover of all faults, meritorious, sacred, and glorious.
यावन्त्यस्य शरीरेषु रोमकूपाणि भारत ।
तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि स्वर्गे वसति मानवः ॥५९॥
59. yāvantyasya śarīreṣu romakūpāṇi bhārata ,
tāvadvarṣasahasrāṇi svarge vasati mānavaḥ.
59. yāvantī asya śarīreṣu romakūpāṇi bhārata
tāvat varṣasahasrāṇi svarge vasati mānavaḥ
59. O Bhārata, a human being dwells in heaven for as many thousands of years as there are hair-pores on their body.
