1.
The Lord (bhagavān) said: "In your previous incarnation, you were Nara, accompanied by Nārāyaṇa. In Badarī, you performed severe asceticism (tapas) for many tens of thousands of years."

2.
Or the supreme power (tejas) resides in you, or in Viṣṇu, the supreme cosmic person (puruṣottama). The world (jagat) is sustained by the energy (tejas) of both of you, who are the foremost among cosmic persons (puruṣa).

3.
O Lord (prabho), during the consecration of Indra, having grasped the magnificent bow that resounded like a thundercloud, the Dānavas were slain by you and Kṛṣṇa.

4.
O Pārtha, O best among men, this is that very Gaṇḍīva bow, suitable for your hands, which I had seized by resorting to illusion (māyā). And also, your two inexhaustible quivers are now appropriate for you again, O Pārtha.

5.
O Pārtha, O one of true valor, I am indeed pleased. Accept from me whatever boon you desire, O best among men.

6.
O giver of honor, no man among mortals is your equal, nor, O subduer of enemies, does any warrior power (kṣatra) exist in heaven with you as its foremost leader.

Arjuna said: "O Lord, O Vṛṣadhvaja (vṛṣadhvaja), if you grant me a wish with affection, I desire that terrible divine weapon, the Pāśupata (pāśupata), O Lord."

8.
That weapon, known as the `brahmaśiras` (Brahmā-head weapon), which is dreadful and of terrible power, annihilates the entire world when the terrible end of an age (yuga) arrives.

O Lord, killer of Bhaga's eye, this is my foremost desire: that through your grace I may become accomplished and capable.

13.
The Lord said: 'O son of Pāṇḍu, I shall give you my beloved, great Pāśupata weapon. You will be capable of wielding, discharging, and even withdrawing it.'

Not even Mahendra knows this, nor Yama, nor the king of Yakṣas; nor Varuṇa, nor Vāyu. How then will humans know it?

15.
O Pārtha, this (weapon) should certainly never be rashly discharged by any person (puruṣa). If it is released by one of little power, it would burn up the entire world.

16.
In all three worlds, including all moving and non-moving beings, there is no one who can be called invulnerable to this (weapon). It strikes down its targets through the mind, by sight, by speech, and by a bow.

17.
Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard that, Pārtha (Arjuna), quickly becoming purified and composed, approached the Lord of the universe (Viśveśa) and said, 'Please teach (this).'

18.
Then, indeed, he taught the best of the Pāṇḍavas (Arjuna) that weapon, which included the secret of its retraction, as if it were Death (Antaka) embodied.

He (Arjuna) reverently approached the great teacher (Viśveśa), just as one would approach the three-eyed Lord of Umā (Śiva). Then, Arjuna, filled with delight, also accepted that (weapon).

Then the earth moved, along with its mountains, forests, and trees; with its oceans and forest regions; and with its villages, cities, and mines.

21.
And the sounds of conchs and drums, and thousands of kettledrums arose. At that moment, a great crash also occurred.

22.
Then, the gods and dānavas saw a terrible, intensely blazing weapon, embodied and standing by the side of the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), who possessed immeasurable might.

23.
And of Arjuna, the one of immeasurable might, who was touched by Tryambaka (Lord Shiva), whatever inauspiciousness was in his body, all of that vanished.

24.
Then Arjuna, having been permitted by Tryambaka (Śiva) to "go to heaven," bowed his head and, with folded hands, gazed at the deity.

25.
Then, the lord (Bhava), who controls the dwellers of the three heavens, the great-minded Giriśa, husband of Uma (Umāpati), Śiva himself, bestowed the great bow Gāṇḍīva, which destroys daitiyas and piśācas, upon the best of men.

26.
Then, at that time, the Lord (Īśvara), accompanied by Uma, abandoned that auspicious, excellent mountain—characterized by white slopes and caves, and frequented by birds and great sages—and ascended into the sky as the best of men (Arjuna) watched.
