भीष्म उवाच ।
क्षत्रधर्ममनुप्राप्तः स्मरन्नेव स वीर्यवान् ।
त्यक्त्वा स कीटतां राजंश्चचार विपुलं तपः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
kṣatradharmamanuprāptaḥ smaranneva sa vīryavān ,
tyaktvā sa kīṭatāṁ rājaṁścacāra vipulaṁ tapaḥ.

1. Bhishma said: "Having attained the constitution (dharma) of a kṣatriya and remembering it, that powerful one, O king, abandoned the state of an insect and performed great austerity (tapas)."
तस्य धर्मार्थविदुषो दृष्ट्वा तद्विपुलं तपः ।
आजगाम द्विजश्रेष्ठः कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तदा ॥२॥
2. tasya dharmārthaviduṣo dṛṣṭvā tadvipulaṁ tapaḥ ,
ājagāma dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanastadā.
2. tasya dharmārthaviduṣaḥ dṛṣṭvā tat vipulam tapaḥ
ājagāma dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ tadā

2. Having seen that great austerity (tapas) of his, who understood the meaning of natural law (dharma), then Krishnadvaipayana, the best of the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ), arrived.
व्यास उवाच ।
क्षात्रं चैव व्रतं कीट भूतानां परिपालनम् ।
क्षात्रं चैव व्रतं ध्यायंस्ततो विप्रत्वमेष्यसि ॥३॥
3. vyāsa uvāca ,
kṣātraṁ caiva vrataṁ kīṭa bhūtānāṁ paripālanam ,
kṣātraṁ caiva vrataṁ dhyāyaṁstato vipratvameṣyasi.
3. vyāsaḥ uvāca kṣātraṃ ca eva vratam kīṭa bhūtānām paripālanam
kṣātraṃ ca eva vratam dhyāyan tataḥ vipratvam eṣyasi

kṣātraṃ vratam ca eva dhyāyan tataḥ vipratvam eṣyasi
3. Vyāsa said: O insect, the Kṣatriya's vow is indeed the protection of all beings. By meditating on this very Kṣatriya vow, you will then attain the state of a brahmin.
पाहि सर्वाः प्रजाः सम्यक्शुभाशुभविदात्मवान् ।
शुभैः संविभजन्कामैरशुभानां च पावनैः ॥४॥
4. pāhi sarvāḥ prajāḥ samyakśubhāśubhavidātmavān ,
śubhaiḥ saṁvibhajankāmairaśubhānāṁ ca pāvanaiḥ.
4. pāhi sarvāḥ prajāḥ samyak śubhāśubhavidātmanvān
śubhaiḥ saṃvibhajant kāmaiḥ aśubhānām ca pāvanaiḥ
4. śubhāśubhavidātmanvān samyak sarvāḥ prajāḥ pāhi
śubhaiḥ kāmaiḥ saṃvibhajant ca aśubhānām pāvanaiḥ
4. Being self-possessed (ātman) and discerning good from bad, protect all beings properly by distributing auspicious benefits and by purifying the inauspicious.
आत्मवान्भव सुप्रीतः स्वधर्मचरणे रतः ।
क्षात्रीं तनुं समुत्सृज्य ततो विप्रत्वमेष्यसि ॥५॥
5. ātmavānbhava suprītaḥ svadharmacaraṇe rataḥ ,
kṣātrīṁ tanuṁ samutsṛjya tato vipratvameṣyasi.
5. ātmanvān bhava suprītaḥ svadharmacaraṇe rataḥ
kṣātrīm tanum samutsṛjya tataḥ vipratvam eṣyasi
5. ātmanvān suprītaḥ svadharmacaraṇe rataḥ bhava
kṣātrīm tanum samutsṛjya tataḥ vipratvam eṣyasi
5. Be self-possessed (ātman), very content, and devoted to the practice of your own intrinsic nature (dharma). Having abandoned the kṣatriya body, you will then attain the state of a brahmin.
भीष्म उवाच ।
सोऽथारण्यमभिप्रेत्य पुनरेव युधिष्ठिर ।
महर्षेर्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रजा धर्मेण पाल्य च ॥६॥
6. bhīṣma uvāca ,
so'thāraṇyamabhipretya punareva yudhiṣṭhira ,
maharṣervacanaṁ śrutvā prajā dharmeṇa pālya ca.
6. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca saḥ atha āraṇyam abhipretya punaḥ eva
yudhiṣṭhira maharṣeḥ vacanam śrutvā prajāḥ dharmeṇa pālya ca
6. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atha yudhiṣṭhira saḥ punaḥ eva āraṇyam
abhipretya maharṣeḥ vacanam śrutvā ca prajāḥ dharmeṇa pālya
6. Bhīṣma said: Then he, O Yudhiṣṭhira, having decided to go to the forest, and having heard the great sage's words, and having protected the subjects according to their intrinsic nature (dharma)...
अचिरेणैव कालेन कीटः पार्थिवसत्तम ।
प्रजापालनधर्मेण प्रेत्य विप्रत्वमागतः ॥७॥
7. acireṇaiva kālena kīṭaḥ pārthivasattama ,
prajāpālanadharmeṇa pretya vipratvamāgataḥ.
7. acireṇa eva kālena kīṭaḥ pārthivasattama
prajāpālanadharmeṇa pretya vipratvam āgataḥ
7. pārthivasattama kīṭaḥ acireṇa eva kālena
prajāpālanadharmeṇa pretya vipratvam āgataḥ
7. O best among kings (pārthivasattama), the worm, in a short time, having passed away, attained the state of a brahmin by virtue of its natural law (dharma) of protecting subjects.
ततस्तं ब्राह्मणं दृष्ट्वा पुनरेव महायशाः ।
आजगाम महाप्राज्ञः कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तदा ॥८॥
8. tatastaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā punareva mahāyaśāḥ ,
ājagāma mahāprājñaḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanastadā.
8. tataḥ tam brāhmaṇam dṛṣṭvā punaḥ eva mahāyaśāḥ
ājagāma mahāprājñaḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ tadā
8. tataḥ tadā mahāyaśāḥ mahāprājñaḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ
tam brāhmaṇam dṛṣṭvā punaḥ eva ājagāma
8. Then, the illustrious and very wise Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) again came, having seen that brahmin.
व्यास उवाच ।
भो भो विप्रर्षभ श्रीमन्मा व्यथिष्ठाः कथंचन ।
शुभकृच्छुभयोनीषु पापकृत्पापयोनिषु ।
उपपद्यति धर्मज्ञ यथाधर्मं यथागमम् ॥९॥
9. vyāsa uvāca ,
bho bho viprarṣabha śrīmanmā vyathiṣṭhāḥ kathaṁcana ,
śubhakṛcchubhayonīṣu pāpakṛtpāpayoniṣu ,
upapadyati dharmajña yathādharmaṁ yathāgamam.
9. vyāsaḥ uvāca bho bho viprarṣabha śrīman
mā vyathiṣṭhāḥ kathaṃcana śubhakṛt
śubhayonīṣu pāpakṛt pāpayoniṣu upapadyati
dharmajña yathādharmam yathāgamam
9. vyāsaḥ uvāca bho bho viprarṣabha śrīman
dharmajña kathaṃcana mā vyathiṣṭhāḥ
śubhakṛt śubhayonīṣu upapadyati
pāpakṛt pāpayoniṣu yathādharmam yathāgamam
9. Vyāsa said: "O best of brahmins (viprarṣabha), O glorious one (śrīman)! Do not be distressed at all. O knower of natural law (dharmajña)! One who performs good deeds is born in good wombs, and one who performs evil deeds is born in evil wombs, precisely according to natural law (dharma) and tradition."
तस्मान्मृत्युभयात्कीट मा व्यथिष्ठाः कथंचन ।
धर्मलोपाद्भयं ते स्यात्तस्माद्धर्मं चरोत्तमम् ॥१०॥
10. tasmānmṛtyubhayātkīṭa mā vyathiṣṭhāḥ kathaṁcana ,
dharmalopādbhayaṁ te syāttasmāddharmaṁ carottamam.
10. tasmāt mṛtyubhayāt kīṭa mā vyathiṣṭhāḥ kathaṃcana
dharmalopāt bhayam te syāt tasmāt dharmam cara uttamam
10. tasmāt kīṭa mṛtyubhayāt kathaṃcana mā vyathiṣṭhāḥ
dharmalopāt te bhayam syāt tasmāt uttamam dharmam cara
10. Therefore, O worm, do not be distressed at all by the fear of death. Let there be fear for you from the transgression of natural law (dharma); therefore, practice the supreme (dharma).
कीट उवाच ।
सुखात्सुखतरं प्राप्तो भगवंस्त्वत्कृते ह्यहम् ।
धर्ममूलां श्रियं प्राप्य पाप्मा नष्ट इहाद्य मे ॥११॥
11. kīṭa uvāca ,
sukhātsukhataraṁ prāpto bhagavaṁstvatkṛte hyaham ,
dharmamūlāṁ śriyaṁ prāpya pāpmā naṣṭa ihādya me.
11. kīṭa uvāca | sukhāt sukhataraṃ prāptaḥ bhagavan tvatkṛte hi
aham | dharmamūlāṃ śriyaṃ prāpya pāpmā naṣṭaḥ iha adya me
11. bhagavan tvatkṛte hi aham sukhāt sukhataram prāptaḥ
dharmamūlām śriyam prāpya adya iha me pāpmā naṣṭaḥ
11. The worm said: "O Lord, because of you, I have attained a happiness greater than [any] happiness. Having achieved prosperity rooted in natural law (dharma), my sin is destroyed here today."
भीष्म उवाच ।
भगवद्वचनात्कीटो ब्राह्मण्यं प्राप्य दुर्लभम् ।
अकरोत्पृथिवीं राजन्यज्ञयूपशताङ्किताम् ।
ततः सालोक्यमगमद्ब्रह्मणो ब्रह्मवित्तमः ॥१२॥
12. bhīṣma uvāca ,
bhagavadvacanātkīṭo brāhmaṇyaṁ prāpya durlabham ,
akarotpṛthivīṁ rājanyajñayūpaśatāṅkitām ,
tataḥ sālokyamagamadbrahmaṇo brahmavittamaḥ.
12. bhīṣma uvāca | bhagavat vacanāt kīṭaḥ
brāhmaṇyaṃ prāpya durlabham | akarot pṛthivīṃ
rājan yajñayūpaśata aṅkitām | tataḥ
sālokyam agamat brahmaṇaḥ brahmavittamaḥ
12. rājan bhīṣma uvāca bhagavat vacanāt
kīṭaḥ durlabham brāhmaṇyam prāpya pṛthivīm
yajñayūpaśata aṅkitām akarot tataḥ
brahmavittamaḥ brahmaṇaḥ sālokyam agamat
12. Bhīṣma said: "O King, by the words of the venerable one, the worm, having attained the rare state of a brāhmaṇa, made the earth marked with hundreds of posts for Vedic rituals (yajña-yūpa). Thereafter, he, the best among those who know the absolute reality (brahman), attained the same realm (salokya) as Brahmā."
अवाप च परं कीटः पार्थ ब्रह्म सनातनम् ।
स्वकर्मफलनिर्वृत्तं व्यासस्य वचनात्तदा ॥१३॥
13. avāpa ca paraṁ kīṭaḥ pārtha brahma sanātanam ,
svakarmaphalanirvṛttaṁ vyāsasya vacanāttadā.
13. avāpa ca param kīṭaḥ pārtha brahma sanātanam
| svakarmaphalanirvṛttam vyāsasya vacanāt tadā
13. pārtha tadā vyāsasya vacanāt kīṭaḥ param
sanātanam brahma ca avāpa svakarmaphalanirvṛttam
13. And then, O Pārtha, by the words of Vyāsa, the worm attained the supreme, eternal absolute reality (brahman), which was brought about by the fruits of his own actions (karma).
तेऽपि यस्मात्स्वभावेन हताः क्षत्रियपुंगवाः ।
संप्राप्तास्ते गतिं पुण्यां तस्मान्मा शोच पुत्रक ॥१४॥
14. te'pi yasmātsvabhāvena hatāḥ kṣatriyapuṁgavāḥ ,
saṁprāptāste gatiṁ puṇyāṁ tasmānmā śoca putraka.
14. te api yasmāt svabhāvena hatāḥ kṣatriyapuṅgavāḥ |
saṃprāptāḥ te gatiṃ puṇyāṃ tasmāt mā śoca putrak
14. putrak yasmāt te api kṣatriyapuṅgavāḥ svabhāvena
hatāḥ puṇyām gatim saṃprāptāḥ tasmāt mā śoca
14. Since those foremost among kṣatriyas were slain by their intrinsic nature (dharma) as warriors, they have attained a meritorious destination. Therefore, my son, do not grieve.
