भीष्म उवाच ।
ततो मामब्रवीद्रामः प्रहसन्निव भारत ।
दिष्ट्या भीष्म मया सार्धं योद्धुमिच्छसि संगरे ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato māmabravīdrāmaḥ prahasanniva bhārata ,
diṣṭyā bhīṣma mayā sārdhaṁ yoddhumicchasi saṁgare.

1. Bhishma spoke: "Then Rama addressed me, O Bharata, saying as if with a laugh, 'Fortunately, O Bhishma, you wish to fight with me in battle.'"
अयं गच्छामि कौरव्य कुरुक्षेत्रं त्वया सह ।
भाषितं तत्करिष्यामि तत्रागच्छेः परंतप ॥२॥
2. ayaṁ gacchāmi kauravya kurukṣetraṁ tvayā saha ,
bhāṣitaṁ tatkariṣyāmi tatrāgaccheḥ paraṁtapa.
2. ayam gacchāmi kauravya kurukṣetram tvayā saha
bhāṣitam tat kariṣyāmi tatra āgaccheḥ paraṃtapa
2. kauravya paraṃtapa ayam tvayā saha kurukṣetram

2. O Kauravya, I shall go to Kurukshetra with you. I will fulfill that which I have promised (bhāṣitam). You must come there, O tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa).
तत्र त्वां निहतं माता मया शरशताचितम् ।
जाह्नवी पश्यतां भीष्म गृध्रकङ्कबडाशनम् ॥३॥
3. tatra tvāṁ nihataṁ mātā mayā śaraśatācitam ,
jāhnavī paśyatāṁ bhīṣma gṛdhrakaṅkabaḍāśanam.
3. tatra tvām nihatam mātā mayā śaraśata ācitam
jāhnavī paśyatām bhīṣma gṛdhra kaṅka vaṭa āśanam
3. bhīṣma tatra mayā nihatam śaraśata ācitam gṛdhra

3. There, O Bhishma, may your mother Jahnavi see you, struck down by me, covered with hundreds of arrows, and becoming the prey for vultures, kites, and crows.
कृपणं त्वामभिप्रेक्ष्य सिद्धचारणसेविता ।
मया विनिहतं देवी रोदतामद्य पार्थिव ॥४॥
4. kṛpaṇaṁ tvāmabhiprekṣya siddhacāraṇasevitā ,
mayā vinihataṁ devī rodatāmadya pārthiva.

mayā vinihatam devī rodatām adya pārthiva

4. O King (Bhishma), today, when the goddess (Ganga), who is attended by Siddhas and Charanas, sees you in a pitiable state, utterly slain by me, let them weep.
अतदर्हा महाभागा भगीरथसुता नदी ।
या त्वामजीजनन्मन्दं युद्धकामुकमातुरम् ॥५॥
5. atadarhā mahābhāgā bhagīrathasutā nadī ,
yā tvāmajījananmandaṁ yuddhakāmukamāturam.

tvām ajījanat mandam yuddhakāmukam āturam

5. That greatly blessed (mahābhāgā) river, the daughter of Bhagīratha, though she was unworthy of such a birth, gave birth to you—foolish, desirous of battle, and afflicted.
एहि गच्छ मया भीष्म युद्धमद्यैव वर्तताम् ।
गृहाण सर्वं कौरव्य रथादि भरतर्षभ ॥६॥
6. ehi gaccha mayā bhīṣma yuddhamadyaiva vartatām ,
gṛhāṇa sarvaṁ kauravya rathādi bharatarṣabha.
6. ehi gaccha mayā bhīṣma yuddham adya eva vartatām
gṛhāṇa sarvam kauravya ratha ādi bharatarṣabha
6. bhīṣma kauravya bharatarṣabha,
ehi mayā gaccha; yuddham adya eva vartatām; sarvam ratha ādi gṛhāṇa.
6. Come, O Bhīṣma, let us go! Let the battle with me begin this very day. O scion of Kuru (kauravya), O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), take all your chariots and other equipment!
इति ब्रुवाणं तमहं रामं परपुरंजयम् ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा राजन्नेवमस्त्वित्यथाब्रुवम् ॥७॥
7. iti bruvāṇaṁ tamahaṁ rāmaṁ parapuraṁjayam ,
praṇamya śirasā rājannevamastvityathābruvam.
7. iti bruvāṇam tam aham rāmam parapurañjayam
praṇamya śirasā rājan evam astu iti atha abruvam
7. rājan,
iti bruvāṇam tam parapurañjayam rāmam śirasā praṇamya aham atha evam astu iti abruvam
7. O King, having bowed my head to that Rāma, the conqueror of enemy cities, who was speaking thus, I then said, 'So be it!'
एवमुक्त्वा ययौ रामः कुरुक्षेत्रं युयुत्सया ।
प्रविश्य नगरं चाहं सत्यवत्यै न्यवेदयम् ॥८॥
8. evamuktvā yayau rāmaḥ kurukṣetraṁ yuyutsayā ,
praviśya nagaraṁ cāhaṁ satyavatyai nyavedayam.
8. evam uktvā yayau rāmaḥ kurukṣetram yuyutsayā
praviśya nagaram ca aham satyavatyai nyavedayam
8. evam uktvā,
rāmaḥ yuyutsayā kurukṣetram yayau.
ca aham nagaram praviśya satyavatyai nyavedayam.
8. Having spoken thus, Rāma went to Kurukṣetra, intending to fight. And I, having entered the city, reported everything to Satyavatī.
ततः कृतस्वस्त्ययनो मात्रा प्रत्यभिनन्दितः ।
द्विजातीन्वाच्य पुण्याहं स्वस्ति चैव महाद्युते ॥९॥
9. tataḥ kṛtasvastyayano mātrā pratyabhinanditaḥ ,
dvijātīnvācya puṇyāhaṁ svasti caiva mahādyute.
9. tataḥ kṛtasvastyayanaḥ mātrā pratyabhinanditaḥ
dvijātīn vācya puṇyāham svasti ca eva mahādyute
9. mahādyute tataḥ mātrā pratyabhinanditaḥ
kṛtasvastyayanaḥ ca eva dvijātīn puṇyāham svasti vācya
9. O greatly resplendent one, then, after auspicious rites were performed for him and he was greeted by his mother, he caused the Brahmins (dvijātīn) to proclaim 'Auspicious Day!' and 'Blessings!'
रथमास्थाय रुचिरं राजतं पाण्डुरैर्हयैः ।
सूपस्करं स्वधिष्ठानं वैयाघ्रपरिवारणम् ॥१०॥
10. rathamāsthāya ruciraṁ rājataṁ pāṇḍurairhayaiḥ ,
sūpaskaraṁ svadhiṣṭhānaṁ vaiyāghraparivāraṇam.
10. ratham āsthāya ruciram rājatam pāṇḍuraiḥ hayaiḥ
sūpaskaram svadhiṣṭhānam vaiyāghraparivāraṇam
10. pāṇḍuraiḥ hayaiḥ (yuktam) ruciram rājatam sūpaskaram
svadhiṣṭhānam vaiyāghraparivāraṇam ratham āsthāya
10. Having then ascended a splendid, silver chariot drawn by white horses, which was well-equipped, comfortable, and covered with tiger-skin,
उपपन्नं महाशस्त्रैः सर्वोपकरणान्वितम् ।
तत्कुलीनेन वीरेण हयशास्त्रविदा नृप ॥११॥
11. upapannaṁ mahāśastraiḥ sarvopakaraṇānvitam ,
tatkulīnena vīreṇa hayaśāstravidā nṛpa.
11. upapannam mahāśastraiḥ sarvopakaranānvitaṃ
tatkulīnena vīreṇa hayaśāstravidā nṛpa
11. nṛpa (ratham) mahāśastraiḥ upapannam sarvopakaranānvitaṃ
tatkulīnena vīreṇa hayaśāstravidā (sūtena) yuktam (asti)
11. O King, (the chariot was) furnished with great weapons and endowed with all equipment, [and it was driven] by a heroic man of noble lineage, one who was knowledgeable in horsemanship.
युक्तं सूतेन शिष्टेन बहुशो दृष्टकर्मणा ।
दंशितः पाण्डुरेणाहं कवचेन वपुष्मता ॥१२॥
12. yuktaṁ sūtena śiṣṭena bahuśo dṛṣṭakarmaṇā ,
daṁśitaḥ pāṇḍureṇāhaṁ kavacena vapuṣmatā.
12. yuktam sūtena śiṣṭena bahuśaḥ dṛṣṭakarmaṇā
daṃśitaḥ pāṇḍureṇa aham kavacena vapuṣmatā
12. (ratham) śiṣṭena bahuśaḥ dṛṣṭakarmaṇā sūtena yuktam.
aham pāṇḍureṇa vapuṣmatā kavacena daṃśitaḥ.
12. and it was equipped with a disciplined charioteer whose skill had been proven many times. I myself was clad in a splendid, white armor.
पाण्डुरं कार्मुकं गृह्य प्रायां भरतसत्तम ।
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि ॥१३॥
13. pāṇḍuraṁ kārmukaṁ gṛhya prāyāṁ bharatasattama ,
pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani.
13. pāṇḍuram kārmukam gṛhya prāyām bharatasattama
pāṇḍureṇa ātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani
13. bharatasattama pāṇḍuram kārmukam gṛhya mūrdhani

13. O best among the Bharatas, I proceeded, holding a white bow, while a white umbrella was held over my head.
पाण्डुरैश्चामरैश्चापि वीज्यमानो नराधिप ।
शुक्लवासाः सितोष्णीषः सर्वशुक्लविभूषणः ॥१४॥
14. pāṇḍuraiścāmaraiścāpi vījyamāno narādhipa ,
śuklavāsāḥ sitoṣṇīṣaḥ sarvaśuklavibhūṣaṇaḥ.
14. pāṇḍuraiḥ cāmaraiḥ ca api vījyamānaḥ narādhipa
śuklavāsāḥ sitoṣṇīṣaḥ sarvaśuklavibhūṣaṇaḥ
14. narādhipa pāṇḍuraiḥ cāmaraiḥ ca api vījyamānaḥ
śuklavāsāḥ sitoṣṇīṣaḥ sarvaśuklavibhūṣaṇaḥ
14. O King, I was being fanned by white fly-whisks as well, dressed in white garments, with a white turban, and adorned with entirely white ornaments.
स्तूयमानो जयाशीर्भिर्निष्क्रम्य गजसाह्वयात् ।
कुरुक्षेत्रं रणक्षेत्रमुपायां भरतर्षभ ॥१५॥
15. stūyamāno jayāśīrbhirniṣkramya gajasāhvayāt ,
kurukṣetraṁ raṇakṣetramupāyāṁ bharatarṣabha.
15. stūyamānaḥ jayāśīrbhiḥ niṣkramya gajasāhvayāt
kurukṣetram raṇakṣetram upāyām bharatarṣabha
15. bharatarṣabha jayāśīrbhiḥ stūyamānaḥ gajasāhvayāt
niṣkramya kurukṣetram raṇakṣetram upāyām
15. O best of Bharatas, being praised with blessings for victory, I departed from Hastinapura (Gajasaṁhvaya) and proceeded to Kurukṣetra, the battlefield.
ते हयाश्चोदितास्तेन सूतेन परमाहवे ।
अवहन्मां भृशं राजन्मनोमारुतरंहसः ॥१६॥
16. te hayāścoditāstena sūtena paramāhave ,
avahanmāṁ bhṛśaṁ rājanmanomārutaraṁhasaḥ.
16. te hayāḥ coditāḥ tena sūtena paramāhave
avahan mām bhṛśam rājan manomārutarāṃhasaḥ
16. rājan paramāhave te hayāḥ tena sūtena
coditāḥ manomārutarāṃhasaḥ bhṛśam mām avahan
16. O King, those horses, impelled by the charioteer in the great battle, carried me very swiftly, possessing the speed of the mind and the wind.
गत्वाहं तत्कुरुक्षेत्रं स च रामः प्रतापवान् ।
युद्धाय सहसा राजन्पराक्रान्तौ परस्परम् ॥१७॥
17. gatvāhaṁ tatkurukṣetraṁ sa ca rāmaḥ pratāpavān ,
yuddhāya sahasā rājanparākrāntau parasparam.
17. gatvā aham tat kurukṣetram saḥ ca rāmaḥ pratāpavān
yuddhāya sahasā rājan parākrāntau parasparam
17. rājan aham tat kurukṣetram gatvā ca saḥ pratāpavān
rāmaḥ sahasā yuddhāya parasparam parākrāntau
17. O King, when I arrived at that Kurukṣetra, and that mighty Rama also suddenly appeared, we both furiously engaged in battle with each other.
ततः संदर्शनेऽतिष्ठं रामस्यातितपस्विनः ।
प्रगृह्य शङ्खप्रवरं ततः प्राधममुत्तमम् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ saṁdarśane'tiṣṭhaṁ rāmasyātitapasvinaḥ ,
pragṛhya śaṅkhapravaraṁ tataḥ prādhamamuttamam.
18. tataḥ saṃdarśane atiṣṭham rāmasya atitapasvinaḥ
pragṛhya śaṅkhapravaram tataḥ prādhamam uttamam
18. tataḥ atitapasvinaḥ rāmasya saṃdarśane atiṣṭham
tataḥ uttamam śaṅkhapravaram pragṛhya prādhamam
18. Then I stood there in the presence of that extremely ascetic Rama. Having taken up an excellent conch, I then blew that supreme conch.
ततस्तत्र द्विजा राजंस्तापसाश्च वनौकसः ।
अपश्यन्त रणं दिव्यं देवाः सर्षिगणास्तदा ॥१९॥
19. tatastatra dvijā rājaṁstāpasāśca vanaukasaḥ ,
apaśyanta raṇaṁ divyaṁ devāḥ sarṣigaṇāstadā.
19. tataḥ tatra dvijāḥ rājan tāpasāḥ ca vanaukasaḥ
apaśyanta raṇam divyam devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ tadā
19. rājan tataḥ tatra dvijāḥ tāpasāḥ ca vanaukasaḥ
ca tadā sarṣigaṇāḥ devāḥ divyam raṇam apaśyanta
19. O King, then there, the Brahmins, ascetics, and forest-dwellers, and also the gods along with the hosts of sages, all witnessed that divine battle.
ततो दिव्यानि माल्यानि प्रादुरासन्मुहुर्मुहुः ।
वादित्राणि च दिव्यानि मेघवृन्दानि चैव ह ॥२०॥
20. tato divyāni mālyāni prādurāsanmuhurmuhuḥ ,
vāditrāṇi ca divyāni meghavṛndāni caiva ha.
20. tataḥ divyāni mālyāni prāduḥ āsan muhurmuhuḥ
vāditrāṇi ca divyāni मेघवृन्दानि ca eva ha
20. tataḥ divyāni mālyāni muhurmuhuḥ prāduḥ āsan
ca divyāni vāditrāṇi ca eva meghavṛndāni ha
20. Then, divine garlands appeared repeatedly. And divine musical instruments, and indeed also masses of clouds (appeared).
ततस्ते तापसाः सर्वे भार्गवस्यानुयायिनः ।
प्रेक्षकाः समपद्यन्त परिवार्य रणाजिरम् ॥२१॥
21. tataste tāpasāḥ sarve bhārgavasyānuyāyinaḥ ,
prekṣakāḥ samapadyanta parivārya raṇājiram.
21. tataḥ te tāpasāḥ sarve bhārgavasya anuyāyinaḥ
prekṣakāḥ samapadyanta parivārya raṇājiram
21. te sarve bhārgavasya anuyāyinaḥ tāpasāḥ tataḥ
raṇājiram parivārya prekṣakāḥ samapadyanta
21. All those ascetics, who were followers of Bhargava, then surrounded the battlefield and became spectators.
ततो मामब्रवीद्देवी सर्वभूतहितैषिणी ।
माता स्वरूपिणी राजन्किमिदं ते चिकीर्षितम् ॥२२॥
22. tato māmabravīddevī sarvabhūtahitaiṣiṇī ,
mātā svarūpiṇī rājankimidaṁ te cikīrṣitam.
22. tataḥ mām abravīt devī sarvabhūtahitaiṣiṇī
mātā svarūpiṇī rājan kim idam te cikīrṣitam
22. tataḥ sarvabhūtahitaiṣiṇī mātā svarūpiṇī devī
mām abravīt rājan kim idam te cikīrṣitam
22. Then the divine mother, who was a well-wisher of all beings, said to me, "O King, what is this that you intend to do?"
गत्वाहं जामदग्न्यं तं प्रयाचिष्ये कुरूद्वह ।
भीष्मेण सह मा योत्सीः शिष्येणेति पुनः पुनः ॥२३॥
23. gatvāhaṁ jāmadagnyaṁ taṁ prayāciṣye kurūdvaha ,
bhīṣmeṇa saha mā yotsīḥ śiṣyeṇeti punaḥ punaḥ.
23. gatvā aham jāmadagnyam tam prayāciṣye kurūdvaha
bhīṣmeṇa saha mā yotsīḥ śiṣyeṇa iti punaḥ punaḥ
23. aham gatvā tam jāmadagnyam kurūdvaha bhīṣmeṇa
saha śiṣyeṇa mā yotsīḥ iti punaḥ punaḥ prayāciṣye
23. “Having gone, I shall implore that son of Jamadagni, ‘O scion of Kuru, do not fight with Bhishma, your own disciple!’ – (I shall say) this again and again.”
मा मैवं पुत्र निर्बन्धं कुरु विप्रेण पार्थिव ।
जामदग्न्येन समरे योद्धुमित्यवभर्त्सयत् ॥२४॥
24. mā maivaṁ putra nirbandhaṁ kuru vipreṇa pārthiva ,
jāmadagnyena samare yoddhumityavabhartsayat.
24. mā mā evam putra nirbandham kuru vipreṇa pārthiva
jāmadagnyena samare yoddhum iti avabhartsayat
24. putra pārthiva mā mā evam vipreṇa jāmadagnyena
samare yoddhum nirbandham kuru iti avabhartsayat
24. “O son, O king, do not maintain such an insistence to fight in battle with that Brahmin, the son of Jamadagni!” – she rebuked (him) thus.
किं न वै क्षत्रियहरो हरतुल्यपराक्रमः ।
विदितः पुत्र रामस्ते यतस्त्वं योद्धुमिच्छसि ॥२५॥
25. kiṁ na vai kṣatriyaharo haratulyaparākramaḥ ,
viditaḥ putra rāmaste yatastvaṁ yoddhumicchasi.
25. kim na vai kṣatriyaharaḥ haratulyaparākramaḥ
viditaḥ putra rāmas te yataḥ tvam yoddhum icchasi
25. putra te rāmaḥ kṣatriyaharaḥ haratulyaparākramaḥ
viditaḥ vai na kim? yataḥ tvam yoddhum icchasi
25. O son, is your Rāma (Paraśurāma)—who is known as the destroyer of kṣatriyas and possesses valor equal to Hara (Śiva)—not indeed well-known, that you wish to fight him?
ततोऽहमब्रुवं देवीमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः ।
सर्वं तद्भरतश्रेष्ठ यथावृत्तं स्वयंवरे ॥२६॥
26. tato'hamabruvaṁ devīmabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
sarvaṁ tadbharataśreṣṭha yathāvṛttaṁ svayaṁvare.
26. tataḥ aham abruvam devīm abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ
sarvam tat bharataśreṣṭha yathāvṛttam svayaṃvare
26. bharataśreṣṭha! tataḥ aham devīm abhivādya
kṛtāñjaliḥ svayaṃvare yathāvṛttam sarvam tat abruvam
26. Then, O best of Bharatas, having saluted the queen with folded hands, I recounted everything that had transpired in the self-choice ceremony.
यथा च रामो राजेन्द्र मया पूर्वं प्रसादितः ।
काशिराजसुतायाश्च यथा कामः पुरातनः ॥२७॥
27. yathā ca rāmo rājendra mayā pūrvaṁ prasāditaḥ ,
kāśirājasutāyāśca yathā kāmaḥ purātanaḥ.
27. yathā ca rāmaḥ rājendra mayā pūrvam prasāditaḥ
kāśirājasutāyāḥ ca yathā kāmaḥ purātanaḥ
27. rājendra! ca yathā rāmaḥ mayā pūrvam prasāditaḥ,
ca yathā kāśirājasutāyāḥ purātanaḥ kāmaḥ (āsīt)
27. And, O best of kings, how Rāma (Paraśurāma) had been appeased by me earlier, and how the daughter of the King of Kāśi had her long-standing desire (for King Śālva).
ततः सा राममभ्येत्य जननी मे महानदी ।
मदर्थं तमृषिं देवी क्षमयामास भार्गवम् ।
भीष्मेण सह मा योत्सीः शिष्येणेति वचोऽब्रवीत् ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ sā rāmamabhyetya jananī me mahānadī ,
madarthaṁ tamṛṣiṁ devī kṣamayāmāsa bhārgavam ,
bhīṣmeṇa saha mā yotsīḥ śiṣyeṇeti vaco'bravīt.
28. tataḥ sā rāmam abhyetya jananī me
mahānadī madartham tam ṛṣim devī
kṣamayāmāsa bhārgavam bhīṣmeṇa saha
mā yotsīḥ śiṣyeṇa iti vacaḥ abravīt
28. tataḥ sā me jananī mahānadī devī,
madartham rāmam bhārgavam tam ṛṣim abhyetya kṣamayām āsa.
"śiṣyeṇa bhīṣmeṇa saha mā yotsīḥ!" iti vacaḥ abravīt
28. Then my mother, the great river (Gangā), approached that sage Bhārgava (Paraśurāma) and, for my sake, appeased him. The goddess (Gangā) spoke, saying, 'Do not fight with Bhīṣma, your own disciple!'
स च तामाह याचन्तीं भीष्ममेव निवर्तय ।
न हि मे कुरुते काममित्यहं तमुपागमम् ॥२९॥
29. sa ca tāmāha yācantīṁ bhīṣmameva nivartaya ,
na hi me kurute kāmamityahaṁ tamupāgamam.
29. saḥ ca tām āha yācantīm bhīṣmam eva nivartaya
| na hi me kurute kāmam iti aham tam upāgamam
29. saḥ ca tām yācantīm āha,
bhīṣmam eva nivartaya aham iti tam upāgamam,
na hi me kāmam kurute
29. And he (Parasurama) said to her, who was pleading, 'Indeed, make Bhishma desist.' (Amba herself had approached him with the plea, thinking:) 'Indeed, he (Bhishma) does not fulfill my desire (kāmam).'
संजय उवाच ।
ततो गङ्गा सुतस्नेहाद्भीष्मं पुनरुपागमत् ।
न चास्याः सोऽकरोद्वाक्यं क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥३०॥
30. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato gaṅgā sutasnehādbhīṣmaṁ punarupāgamat ,
na cāsyāḥ so'karodvākyaṁ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ.
30. saṃjaya uvāca | tataḥ gaṅgā sutasnehāt bhīṣmam punaḥ upāgamat
| na ca asyāḥ saḥ akarot vākyam krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ

30. Sanjaya said: Then Ganga, out of affection for her son, again approached Bhishma. But he, with his eyes agitated by anger, did not heed her words.
अथादृश्यत धर्मात्मा भृगुश्रेष्ठो महातपाः ।
आह्वयामास च पुनर्युद्धाय द्विजसत्तमः ॥३१॥
31. athādṛśyata dharmātmā bhṛguśreṣṭho mahātapāḥ ,
āhvayāmāsa ca punaryuddhāya dvijasattamaḥ.

31. Then the righteous-souled (dharma) and highly ascetic (tapas) best among the Bhrigus, the foremost among the twice-born (Brahmins), appeared. And he again challenged (Bhishma) to battle.
