वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं पृष्ट्वा सूतपुत्रं हृच्छोकेनार्दितो भृशम् ।
जये निराशः पुत्राणां धृतराष्ट्रोऽपतत्क्षितौ ॥१॥

1. Vaishampayana said: Having questioned Sanjaya (sūtaputra) in this manner, and greatly afflicted by the grief in his heart, Dhritarashtra, despairing of his sons' victory, fell to the ground.
तं विसंज्ञं निपतितं सिषिचुः परिचारकाः ।
जलेनात्यर्थशीतेन वीजन्तः पुण्यगन्धिना ॥२॥
2. taṁ visaṁjñaṁ nipatitaṁ siṣicuḥ paricārakāḥ ,
jalenātyarthaśītena vījantaḥ puṇyagandhinā.

2. The attendants sprinkled him, fallen unconscious, with extremely cold, sacredly fragrant water, fanning him all the while.
पतितं चैनमाज्ञाय समन्ताद्भरतस्त्रियः ।
परिवव्रुर्महाराजमस्पृशंश्चैव पाणिभिः ॥३॥
3. patitaṁ cainamājñāya samantādbharatastriyaḥ ,
parivavrurmahārājamaspṛśaṁścaiva pāṇibhiḥ.

3. And perceiving him to have fallen, the women of the Bharata lineage surrounded the great king from all sides, touching him with their hands.
उत्थाप्य चैनं शनकै राजानं पृथिवीतलात् ।
आसनं प्रापयामासुर्बाष्पकण्ठ्यो वराङ्गनाः ॥४॥
4. utthāpya cainaṁ śanakai rājānaṁ pṛthivītalāt ,
āsanaṁ prāpayāmāsurbāṣpakaṇṭhyo varāṅganāḥ.

4. And the excellent women, their voices choked with tears, slowly raised the king from the ground and brought him to a seat.
आसनं प्राप्य राजा तु मूर्छयाभिपरिप्लुतः ।
निश्चेष्टोऽतिष्ठत तदा वीज्यमानः समन्ततः ॥५॥
5. āsanaṁ prāpya rājā tu mūrchayābhipariplutaḥ ,
niśceṣṭo'tiṣṭhata tadā vījyamānaḥ samantataḥ.

5. But the king, having reached the seat, remained motionless, overwhelmed by unconsciousness, while being fanned from all sides.
स लब्ध्वा शनकैः संज्ञां वेपमानो महीपतिः ।
पुनर्गावल्गणिं सूतं पर्यपृच्छद्यथातथम् ॥६॥
6. sa labdhvā śanakaiḥ saṁjñāṁ vepamāno mahīpatiḥ ,
punargāvalgaṇiṁ sūtaṁ paryapṛcchadyathātatham.
6. sa labdhvā śanakaiḥ saṃjñām vepamānaḥ mahīpatiḥ
punaḥ gāvalgaṇim sūtam paryapṛcchat yathātatham

6. The trembling king, having slowly regained consciousness, again thoroughly questioned the charioteer, Gavalgāṇi, for the precise account.
यत्तदुद्यन्निवादित्यो ज्योतिषा प्रणुदंस्तमः ।
आयादजातशत्रुर्वै कस्तं द्रोणादवारयत् ॥७॥
7. yattadudyannivādityo jyotiṣā praṇudaṁstamaḥ ,
āyādajātaśatrurvai kastaṁ droṇādavārayat.
7. yat tat udyan iva ādityaḥ jyotiṣā praṇudan tamaḥ
āyāt ajātaśatruḥ vai kaḥ tam droṇāt avārayat
7. vai yat tat ajātaśatruḥ ādityaḥ iva udyan jyotiṣā

7. Who was it, indeed, Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira), who came like the rising sun, dispelling darkness with his radiance? Who could prevent him from confronting Droṇa?
प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं तथा क्रुद्धं तरस्विनम् ।
आसक्तमनसं दीप्तं प्रतिद्विरदघातिनम् ।
वाशितासंगमे यद्वदजय्यं प्रतियूथपैः ॥८॥
8. prabhinnamiva mātaṅgaṁ tathā kruddhaṁ tarasvinam ,
āsaktamanasaṁ dīptaṁ pratidviradaghātinam ,
vāśitāsaṁgame yadvadajayyaṁ pratiyūthapaiḥ.

8. (Who came) like an enraged, powerful, rutting elephant, fiercely focused and blazing, a killer of opposing elephants, unconquerable by rival herd leaders in a mating encounter, just so.
अति चान्यान्रणे योधान्वीरः पुरुषसत्तमः ।
यो ह्येको हि महाबाहुर्निर्दहेद्घोरचक्षुषा ।
कृत्स्नं दुर्योधनबलं धृतिमान्सत्यसंगरः ॥९॥
9. ati cānyānraṇe yodhānvīraḥ puruṣasattamaḥ ,
yo hyeko hi mahābāhurnirdahedghoracakṣuṣā ,
kṛtsnaṁ duryodhanabalaṁ dhṛtimānsatyasaṁgaraḥ.
9. ati ca anyān raṇe yodhān vīraḥ
puruṣasattamaḥ yaḥ hi ekaḥ hi mahābāhuḥ
nirdahet ghoracakṣuṣā kṛtsnam
duryodhanabalam dhṛtimān satyasaṅgaraḥ
9. ca hi yaḥ vīraḥ puruṣasattamaḥ
mahābāhuḥ dhṛtimān satyasaṅgaraḥ hi
ekaḥ raṇe anyān yodhān ati ghoracakṣuṣā
kṛtsnam duryodhanabalam nirdahet
9. And indeed, that hero, the best among men, mighty-armed, resolute, and true to his battle pledge, who alone could burn down the entire army of Duryodhana, including all other warriors in battle, with his terrible gaze.
चक्षुर्हणं जये सक्तमिष्वासवररक्षितम् ।
दान्तं बहुमतं लोके के शूराः पर्यवारयन् ॥१०॥
10. cakṣurhaṇaṁ jaye saktamiṣvāsavararakṣitam ,
dāntaṁ bahumataṁ loke ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan.
10. cakṣurhaṇam jaye saktam iṣvāsa-vara-rakṣitam
dāntam bahumatam loke ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan

10. Which heroes surrounded him - the one who overwhelms (blinds) his enemies, intent on victory, protected by the best archers, self-controlled, and highly esteemed in the world?
के दुष्प्रधर्षं राजानमिष्वासवरमच्युतम् ।
समासेदुर्नरव्याघ्रं कौन्तेयं तत्र मामकाः ॥११॥
11. ke duṣpradharṣaṁ rājānamiṣvāsavaramacyutam ,
samāsedurnaravyāghraṁ kaunteyaṁ tatra māmakāḥ.

samāseduḥ naravyāghram kaunteyam tatra māmakāḥ

11. Which of my warriors there encountered the son of Kunti (Kaunteya) - who was invincible, the best archer, unwavering, and a tiger among men?
तरसैवाभिपत्याथ यो वै द्रोणमुपाद्रवत् ।
तं भीमसेनमायान्तं के शूराः पर्यवारयन् ॥१२॥
12. tarasaivābhipatyātha yo vai droṇamupādravat ,
taṁ bhīmasenamāyāntaṁ ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan.
12. tarasā eva abhipatya atha yaḥ vai droṇam upādravat
tam bhīmasenam āyāntam ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan

12. Which heroes surrounded Bhimasena as he advanced, he who had swiftly attacked Drona?
यदायाज्जलदप्रख्यो रथः परमवीर्यवान् ।
पर्जन्य इव बीभत्सुस्तुमुलामशनिं सृजन् ॥१३॥
13. yadāyājjaladaprakhyo rathaḥ paramavīryavān ,
parjanya iva bībhatsustumulāmaśaniṁ sṛjan.
13. yadā āyāt jalada-prākhyaḥ rathaḥ parama-vīryavān
parjanyaḥ iva bībhatsuḥ tumulām aśanim sṛjan
13. yadā jalada-prākhyaḥ parama-vīryavān rathaḥ āyāt,

13. When his exceedingly powerful chariot, resembling a cloud, advanced - Arjuna (Bibhatsu), like the rain-god (Parjanya), unleashed a mighty thunderbolt...
ववर्ष शरवर्षाणि वर्षाणि मघवानिव ।
इषुसंबाधमाकाशं कुर्वन्कपिवरध्वजः ।
अवस्फूर्जन्दिशः सर्वास्तलनेमिस्वनेन च ॥१४॥
14. vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi varṣāṇi maghavāniva ,
iṣusaṁbādhamākāśaṁ kurvankapivaradhvajaḥ ,
avasphūrjandiśaḥ sarvāstalanemisvanena ca.
14. vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi varṣāṇi
maghavā iva iṣusaṃbādham ākāśam
kurvan kapivaradhvajaḥ avasphūrjan
diśaḥ sarvāḥ talanemisvanena ca
14. kapivaradhvajaḥ maghavā iva
śaravarṣāṇi varṣāṇi vavarṣa ākāśam

14. The warrior whose banner bore the best of monkeys (Arjuna) showered forth torrents of arrows, just as Indra (Maghavan) pours down rain, filling the sky densely with arrows. He thundered across all directions with the sound of his palms striking the bowstring and the rumble of his chariot wheels.
चापविद्युत्प्रभो घोरो रथगुल्मबलाहकः ।
रथनेमिघोषस्तनितः शरशब्दातिबन्धुरः ॥१५॥
15. cāpavidyutprabho ghoro rathagulmabalāhakaḥ ,
rathanemighoṣastanitaḥ śaraśabdātibandhuraḥ.
15. cāpavidyutprabhaḥ ghoraḥ rathagulmabalāhakaḥ
rathanemighoṣastanitaḥ śaraśabdātibandhuraḥ
15. ghoraḥ cāpavidyutprabhaḥ rathagulmabalāhakaḥ

15. (That battle was) dreadful, shining with the lightning-like flash of bows, its chariot formations like storm clouds, thundering with the rumble of chariot wheels, and fiercely dense with the sound of arrows.
रोषनिर्जितजीमूतो मनोऽभिप्रायशीघ्रगः ।
मर्मातिगो बाणधारस्तुमुलः शोणितोदकः ॥१६॥
16. roṣanirjitajīmūto mano'bhiprāyaśīghragaḥ ,
marmātigo bāṇadhārastumulaḥ śoṇitodakaḥ.
16. roṣanirjitajīmūtaḥ manaḥ abhiprāyaśīghragaḥ
marmātigaḥ bāṇadhāraḥ tumulaḥ śoṇitodakaḥ
16. roṣanirjitajīmūtaḥ manaḥ abhiprāyaśīghragaḥ

16. (That battle-storm was) one that surpassed storm clouds in its fury, moving with the swiftness of thought and intention. It possessed tumultuous streams of arrows that pierced vital spots, and its waters were of blood.
संप्लावयन्महीं सर्वां मानवैरास्तरंस्तदा ।
गदानिष्टनितो रौद्रो दुर्योधनकृतोद्यमः ॥१७॥
17. saṁplāvayanmahīṁ sarvāṁ mānavairāstaraṁstadā ,
gadāniṣṭanito raudro duryodhanakṛtodyamaḥ.
17. samplāvayan mahīm sarvām mānavaiḥ āstaran tadā
gadāniṣṭanitaḥ raudraḥ duryodhanakṛtodyamaḥ
17. (yuddham) mahīm sarvām samplāvayan tadā mānavaiḥ āstaran
gadāniṣṭanitaḥ raudraḥ duryodhanakṛtodyamaḥ (āsīt)
17. As it flooded the entire earth and covered it with fallen men, that dreadful (battle), thundering with the clash of maces, was the enterprise undertaken by Duryodhana.
युद्धेऽभ्यषिञ्चद्विजयो गार्ध्रपत्रैः शिलाशितैः ।
गाण्डीवं धारयन्धीमान्कीदृशं वो मनस्तदा ॥१८॥
18. yuddhe'bhyaṣiñcadvijayo gārdhrapatraiḥ śilāśitaiḥ ,
gāṇḍīvaṁ dhārayandhīmānkīdṛśaṁ vo manastadā.
18. yuddhe abhyasiñcat vijayaḥ gārdhrapatraiḥ śilāśitaiḥ
gāṇḍīvam dhārayan dhīmān kīdṛśam vaḥ manaḥ tadā
18. tadā dhīmān vijayaḥ yuddhe gāṇḍīvam dhārayan śilāśitaiḥ
gārdhrapatraiḥ abhyasiñcat vaḥ manaḥ kīdṛśam
18. When the wise (Arjuna), also known as Vijaya, wielded his Gaṇḍīva bow in battle, showering (arrows) fletched with eagle feathers and sharpened on stone, how was your mind then?
कच्चिद्गाण्डीवशब्देन न प्रणश्यत वै बलम् ।
यद्वः स भैरवं कुर्वन्नर्जुनो भृशमभ्यगात् ॥१९॥
19. kaccidgāṇḍīvaśabdena na praṇaśyata vai balam ,
yadvaḥ sa bhairavaṁ kurvannarjuno bhṛśamabhyagāt.
19. kaccit gāṇḍīvaśabdena na praṇaśyata vai balam yat
vaḥ saḥ bhairavam kurvan arjunaḥ bhṛśam abhyagāt
19. kaccit gāṇḍīvaśabdena balam na praṇaśyata vai? yat
saḥ arjunaḥ bhairavam kurvan bhṛśam vaḥ abhyagāt
19. Surely your army (bala) did not perish because of the sound of the Gaṇḍīva bow, did it? For Arjuna, creating a terrifying roar, vehemently approached you.
कच्चिन्नापानुदद्द्रोणादिषुभिर्वो धनंजयः ।
वातो मेघानिवाविध्यन्प्रवाञ्शरवनानिलः ।
को हि गाण्डीवधन्वानं नरः सोढुं रणेऽर्हति ॥२०॥
20. kaccinnāpānudaddroṇādiṣubhirvo dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
vāto meghānivāvidhyanpravāñśaravanānilaḥ ,
ko hi gāṇḍīvadhanvānaṁ naraḥ soḍhuṁ raṇe'rhati.
20. kaccit na apānudat droṇa-ādi-iṣubhiḥ
vaḥ dhanañjayaḥ vātaḥ meghān iva āvidhyan
pravāt śaravana-anilaḥ kaḥ hi
gāṇḍīvadhanvānam naraḥ soḍhum raṇe arhati
20. kaccit dhanañjayaḥ droṇa-ādi-iṣubhiḥ vaḥ na apānudat yathā pravāt śaravana-anilaḥ vātaḥ meghān iva āvidhyan,
kaḥ hi naraḥ raṇe gāṇḍīvadhanvānam soḍhum arhati
20. Surely Dhanañjaya did not drive away your arrows, which were like those of Droṇa, just as a wind (resembling an arrow-forest) scatters clouds as it blows? Indeed, what man can endure one wielding the Gaṇḍīva bow in battle?
यत्सेनाः समकम्पन्त यद्वीरानस्पृशद्भयम् ।
के तत्र नाजहुर्द्रोणं के क्षुद्राः प्राद्रवन्भयात् ॥२१॥
21. yatsenāḥ samakampanta yadvīrānaspṛśadbhayam ,
ke tatra nājahurdroṇaṁ ke kṣudrāḥ prādravanbhayāt.
21. yat senāḥ samakampanta yat vīrān aspṛśat bhayam ke
tatra na ajahuḥ droṇam ke kṣudrāḥ prādravan bhayāt
21. yat senāḥ samakampanta,
yat bhayam vīrān aspṛśat,
tatra ke droṇam na ajahuḥ? ke kṣudrāḥ bhayāt prādravan?
21. Given that your armies trembled and fear afflicted the brave warriors, who among them did not abandon Droṇa? And which contemptible men fled from fear?
के वा तत्र तनूस्त्यक्त्वा प्रतीपं मृत्युमाव्रजन् ।
अमानुषाणां जेतारं युद्धेष्वपि धनंजयम् ॥२२॥
22. ke vā tatra tanūstyaktvā pratīpaṁ mṛtyumāvrajan ,
amānuṣāṇāṁ jetāraṁ yuddheṣvapi dhanaṁjayam.
22. ke vā tatra tanūḥ tyaktvā pratīpam mṛtyum āvrajan
amānuṣāṇām jetāram yuddheṣu api dhanañjayam
22. ke vā tatra tanūḥ tyaktvā yuddheṣu api amānuṣāṇām
jetāram dhanañjayam pratīpam mṛtyum āvrajan
22. Who indeed, abandoning their bodies, would advance towards certain death (pratīpam mṛtyum) there, against Dhananjaya, who is the conqueror of non-human beings even in battles?
न च वेगं सिताश्वस्य विशक्ष्यन्तीह मामकाः ।
गाण्डीवस्य च निर्घोषं प्रावृड्जलदनिस्वनम् ॥२३॥
23. na ca vegaṁ sitāśvasya viśakṣyantīha māmakāḥ ,
gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣaṁ prāvṛḍjaladanisvanam.
23. na ca vegam sitāśvasya viśakṣyanti iha māmakāḥ
gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣam prāvṛḍ-jalada-nisvanam
23. ca iha māmakāḥ sitāśvasya vegam gāṇḍīvasya ca
prāvṛḍ-jalada-nisvanam nirghoṣam na viśakṣyanti
23. And my men (māmakāḥ) here will not be able to withstand the speed of Arjuna's white horses (sitāśvasya), nor the roar of his Gaṇḍīva bow, which is like the thunder of monsoon clouds.
विष्वक्सेनो यस्य यन्ता योद्धा चैव धनंजयः ।
अशक्यः स रथो जेतुं मन्ये देवासुरैरपि ॥२४॥
24. viṣvakseno yasya yantā yoddhā caiva dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
aśakyaḥ sa ratho jetuṁ manye devāsurairapi.
24. viṣvaksenaḥ yasya yantā yodhā ca eva dhanañjayaḥ
aśakyaḥ saḥ rathaḥ jetum manye deva-asuraiḥ api
24. yasya yantā viṣvaksenaḥ ca eva yodhā dhanañjayaḥ,
saḥ rathaḥ devāsurais api jetum aśakyaḥ iti manye
24. Whose charioteer is Viṣvaksena (Krishna) and whose warrior is indeed Dhananjaya (Arjuna), that chariot, I believe, is impossible to conquer even by gods and asuras.
सुकुमारो युवा शूरो दर्शनीयश्च पाण्डवः ।
मेधावी निपुणो धीमान्युधि सत्यपराक्रमः ॥२५॥
25. sukumāro yuvā śūro darśanīyaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
medhāvī nipuṇo dhīmānyudhi satyaparākramaḥ.
25. sukumāraḥ yuvā śūraḥ darśanīyaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ
medhāvī nipuṇaḥ dhīmān yudhi satya-parākramaḥ
25. pāṇḍavaḥ sukumāraḥ yuvā śūraḥ ca darśanīyaḥ
medhāvī nipuṇaḥ dhīmān yudhi satya-parākramaḥ
25. The son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna) is youthful, brave, and handsome (darśanīyaḥ); he is intelligent (medhāvī), skillful (nipuṇaḥ), wise (dhīmān), and truly valorous (satyaparākramaḥ) in battle.
आरावं विपुलं कुर्वन्व्यथयन्सर्वकौरवान् ।
यदायान्नकुलो धीमान्के शूराः पर्यवारयन् ॥२६॥
26. ārāvaṁ vipulaṁ kurvanvyathayansarvakauravān ,
yadāyānnakulo dhīmānke śūrāḥ paryavārayan.
26. ārāvam vipulam kurvan vyathayan sarvakauravān
yadā āyāt nakulaḥ dhīmān ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan
26. yadā dhīmān nakulaḥ vipulam ārāvam kurvan sarvakauravān vyathayan āyāt,
ke śūrāḥ paryavārayan
26. When the intelligent Nakula arrived, creating a mighty roar and distressing all the Kauravas, what warriors surrounded him?
आशीविष इव क्रुद्धः सहदेवो यदाभ्ययात् ।
शत्रूणां कदनं कुर्वञ्जेतासौ दुर्जयो युधि ॥२७॥
27. āśīviṣa iva kruddhaḥ sahadevo yadābhyayāt ,
śatrūṇāṁ kadanaṁ kurvañjetāsau durjayo yudhi.

सात्वते तानि सर्वाणि त्रैलोक्यमिव केशवे ॥३४॥

61. He performed ten Aśvamedha (horse) Vedic rituals (yajñas), which were unobstructed and all-encompassing. During these, ample food and drink were given as ritual fees. He protected his subjects (prajāḥ) as if they were his own sons.
पिबन्त्यो दक्षिणां यस्य गङ्गास्रोतः समापिबन् ।
तावतीर्गा ददौ वीर उशीनरसुतोऽध्वरे ॥६२॥
62. pibantyo dakṣiṇāṁ yasya gaṅgāsrotaḥ samāpiban ,

62. During the Vedic ritual (yajña), the heroic son of Uśīnara (uśīnarasuta) gave away countless cows – those very cows that had completely drunk from the southern part of the Ganga's stream.

63. No humans, neither those of the past (pūrve) nor those who would come after (apare), ever performed such a feat. Thus, the gods exclaimed after this difficult (duṣkara) deed (karma) had been accomplished.
पश्यामस्त्रिषु लोकेषु न तं संस्थास्नुचारिषु ।
जातं वापि जनिष्यं वा द्वितीयं वापि संप्रति ॥६४॥
64. paśyāmastriṣu lokeṣu na taṁ saṁsthāsnucāriṣu ,
jātaṁ vāpi janiṣyaṁ vā dvitīyaṁ vāpi saṁprati.

64. Among all beings – whether stationary or mobile – in the three worlds, we do not see anyone like him who has been born, who will be born, or even a second one currently existing.
अन्यमौशीनराच्छैब्याद्धुरो वोढारमित्युत ।
गतिं यस्य न यास्यन्ति मानुषा लोकवासिनः ॥६५॥
65. anyamauśīnarācchaibyāddhuro voḍhāramityuta ,
gatiṁ yasya na yāsyanti mānuṣā lokavāsinaḥ.

65. We do not see any other son of Uśīnara (auśīnarāt) or Śibi (śaibyāt) who is a bearer (voḍhāram) of such a burden (dhuraḥ). Thus, moreover, the inhabitants of the world (lokavāsinaḥ), these humans (mānuṣāḥ), will never attain his (yasya) lofty state (gati).
तस्य नप्तारमायान्तं शैब्यं कः समवारयत् ।
द्रोणायाभिमुखं यान्तं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् ॥६६॥
66. tasya naptāramāyāntaṁ śaibyaṁ kaḥ samavārayat ,
droṇāyābhimukhaṁ yāntaṁ vyāttānanamivāntakam.

70. O Sañjaya, for the sake of whom these and many other warriors will sacrifice their lives in battle, what could remain unconquered by them in war?
येषां च पुरुषव्याघ्रः शार्ङ्गधन्वा व्यपाश्रयः ।
हितार्थी चापि पार्थानां कथं तेषां पराजयः ॥७१॥
71. yeṣāṁ ca puruṣavyāghraḥ śārṅgadhanvā vyapāśrayaḥ ,
hitārthī cāpi pārthānāṁ kathaṁ teṣāṁ parājayaḥ.

71. And for whom Kṛṣṇa, the tiger among men (puruṣavyāghraḥ) and wielder of the Śārṅga bow, is the refuge, and who is also the well-wisher of the Pārthas, how can there be defeat for them?
लोकानां गुरुरत्यन्तं लोकनाथः सनातनः ।
नारायणो रणे नाथो दिव्यो दिव्यात्मवान्प्रभुः ॥७२॥
72. lokānāṁ gururatyantaṁ lokanāthaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
nārāyaṇo raṇe nātho divyo divyātmavānprabhuḥ.

72. Nārāyaṇa is the supreme teacher (guru) of the worlds, the eternal lord of the worlds, the divine lord in battle, a master possessing a divine self (ātman).
यस्य दिव्यानि कर्माणि प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ।
तान्यहं कीर्तयिष्यामि भक्त्या स्थैर्यार्थमात्मनः ॥७३॥
73. yasya divyāni karmāṇi pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ ,
tānyahaṁ kīrtayiṣyāmi bhaktyā sthairyārthamātmanaḥ.

73. I will recite those divine actions (karma) of whom the wise declare, doing so with devotion (bhakti) for the sake of my own inner steadiness (ātman).
