दुर्योधन उवाच ।
कथं शिखण्डी गाङ्गेय कन्या भूत्वा सती तदा ।
पुरुषोऽभवद्युधि श्रेष्ठ तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥
1. duryodhana uvāca ,
kathaṁ śikhaṇḍī gāṅgeya kanyā bhūtvā satī tadā ,
puruṣo'bhavadyudhi śreṣṭha tanme brūhi pitāmaha.

1. gāṅgeya śreṣṭha pitāmaha,
śikhaṇḍī tadā kanyā satī bhūtvā katham yudhi puruṣaḥ abhavat,
tat me brūhi.
1. Duryodhana said: O son of Ganga (Bhishma), O best of men, O grandfather, tell me how Shikhandi, having been a girl then, became a man (puruṣa) in battle.
भीष्म उवाच ।
भार्या तु तस्य राजेन्द्र द्रुपदस्य महीपतेः ।
महिषी दयिता ह्यासीदपुत्रा च विशां पते ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
bhāryā tu tasya rājendra drupadasya mahīpateḥ ,
mahiṣī dayitā hyāsīdaputrā ca viśāṁ pate.

mahīpateḥ | mahiṣī dayitā hi āsīt aputrā ca viśām pate
2. bhīṣma uvāca: rājendra viśāṃ pate,

2. Bhishma said: O King of kings, O Lord of the people, indeed, the beloved chief queen of King Drupada was childless.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु द्रुपदो वै महीपतिः ।
अपत्यार्थं महाराज तोषयामास शंकरम् ॥३॥
3. etasminneva kāle tu drupado vai mahīpatiḥ ,
apatyārthaṁ mahārāja toṣayāmāsa śaṁkaram.
3. etasmin eva kāle tu drupadaḥ vai mahīpatiḥ
| apatya-artham mahārāja toṣayāmāsa śaṅkaram
3. mahārāja,
tu etasmin eva kāle mahīpatiḥ drupadaḥ vai apatyārtham śaṅkaram toṣayāmāsa.
3. At this very time, King Drupada, O great king, indeed pleased Lord Shankara for the sake of offspring.
अस्मद्वधार्थं निश्चित्य तपो घोरं समास्थितः ।
लेभे कन्यां महादेवात्पुत्रो मे स्यादिति ब्रुवन् ॥४॥
4. asmadvadhārthaṁ niścitya tapo ghoraṁ samāsthitaḥ ,
lebhe kanyāṁ mahādevātputro me syāditi bruvan.
4. asmat-vadha-artham niścitya tapaḥ ghoram samāsthitaḥ
| lebhe kanyām mahādevāt putraḥ me syāt iti bruvan
4. अस्मत्-वध-अर्थम् निश्चित्य घोरं तपः समास्थितः (सन्),
मे पुत्रः स्यात् इति ब्रुवन्,
महादेवात् कन्याम् लेभे।
4. Having resolved to cause our destruction, he undertook severe austerity (tapas). He then obtained a daughter from Mahadeva (the Great God), while saying, 'May a son be born to me!'
भगवन्पुत्रमिच्छामि भीष्मं प्रतिचिकीर्षया ।
इत्युक्तो देवदेवेन स्त्रीपुमांस्ते भविष्यति ॥५॥
5. bhagavanputramicchāmi bhīṣmaṁ praticikīrṣayā ,
ityukto devadevena strīpumāṁste bhaviṣyati.
5. bhagavan putram icchāmi bhīṣmam praticikīrṣayā
iti uktaḥ devadevena strī pumān te bhaviṣyati
5. bhagavan bhīṣmam praticikīrṣayā putram icchāmi.
iti devadevena uktaḥ,
te strī pumān bhaviṣyati.
5. "O Lord (bhagavan), I desire a son with the intention of retaliating against Bhishma." When he (the king) was spoken to thus by the God of gods, he (the God) said, "Your child will be both female and male."
निवर्तस्व महीपाल नैतज्जात्वन्यथा भवेत् ।
स तु गत्वा च नगरं भार्यामिदमुवाच ह ॥६॥
6. nivartasva mahīpāla naitajjātvanyathā bhavet ,
sa tu gatvā ca nagaraṁ bhāryāmidamuvāca ha.
6. nivartasva mahīpāla na etat jātu anyathā bhavet
sa tu gatvā ca nagaram bhāryām idam uvāca ha
6. mahīpāla nivartasva! etat jātu anyathā na bhavet.
saḥ tu nagaram gatvā ca bhāryām idam uvāca ha.
6. "O king (mahīpāla), turn back! This will never be otherwise." But he, having gone to the city, then spoke this to his wife.
कृतो यत्नो मया देवि पुत्रार्थे तपसा महान् ।
कन्या भूत्वा पुमान्भावी इति चोक्तोऽस्मि शंभुना ॥७॥
7. kṛto yatno mayā devi putrārthe tapasā mahān ,
kanyā bhūtvā pumānbhāvī iti cokto'smi śaṁbhunā.
7. kṛtaḥ yatnaḥ mayā devi putrārthe tapasā mahān
kanyā bhūtvā pumān bhāvī iti ca uktaḥ asmi śambhunā
7. devi,
mayā putrārthe tapasā mahān yatnaḥ kṛtaḥ.
'kanyā bhūtvā pumān bhāvī' iti ca śambhunā uktaḥ asmi.
7. "O goddess (devī), a great effort (tapas) has been made by me for the sake of a son through asceticism (tapas). And I have been told by Shambhu (Shiva) that 'after being a girl, he will become a male'."
पुनः पुनर्याच्यमानो दिष्टमित्यब्रवीच्छिवः ।
न तदन्यद्धि भविता भवितव्यं हि तत्तथा ॥८॥
8. punaḥ punaryācyamāno diṣṭamityabravīcchivaḥ ,
na tadanyaddhi bhavitā bhavitavyaṁ hi tattathā.
8. punaḥ punaḥ yācyamānaḥ diṣṭam iti abravīt śivaḥ
na tat anyat hi bhavitā bhavitavyam hi tat tathā
8. punaḥ punaḥ yācyamānaḥ śivaḥ 'diṣṭam' iti abravīt.
'tat anyat hi na bhavitā.
hi tat tathā bhavitavyam.
'
8. Being repeatedly implored, Shiva said, "It is destiny (diṣṭam)." He added, "Indeed, it will not be otherwise than that. What is destined (bhavitavyam) must happen that way."
ततः सा नियता भूत्वा ऋतुकाले मनस्विनी ।
पत्नी द्रुपदराजस्य द्रुपदं संविवेश ह ॥९॥
9. tataḥ sā niyatā bhūtvā ṛtukāle manasvinī ,
patnī drupadarājasya drupadaṁ saṁviveśa ha.
9. tataḥ sā niyatā bhūtvā ṛtukāle manasvinī
patnī drupadarājasya drupadaṃ saṃviveśa ha
9. tataḥ manasvinī niyatā sā drupadarājasya
patnī ṛtukāle drupadaṃ saṃviveśa ha
9. Then, the self-controlled, high-minded wife of King Drupada indeed cohabited with Drupada during the fertile season.
लेभे गर्भं यथाकालं विधिदृष्टेन हेतुना ।
पार्षतात्सा महीपाल यथा मां नारदोऽब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
10. lebhe garbhaṁ yathākālaṁ vidhidṛṣṭena hetunā ,
pārṣatātsā mahīpāla yathā māṁ nārado'bravīt.
10. lebhe garbhaṃ yathākālaṃ vidhidṛṣṭena hetunā
pārṣatāt sā mahīpāla yathā māṃ nāradaḥ abravīt
10. sā garbhaṃ yathākālaṃ vidhidṛṣṭena hetunā lebhe.
mahīpāla,
yathā nāradaḥ māṃ abravīt,
[sā] pārṣatāt [abhūta].
10. She conceived a child in due course, by a means ordained by natural law (dharma). O King (mahīpāla), that [daughter] was from Drupada, as Narada told me.
ततो दधार तं गर्भं देवी राजीवलोचना ।
तां स राजा प्रियां भार्यां द्रुपदः कुरुनन्दन ।
पुत्रस्नेहान्महाबाहुः सुखं पर्यचरत्तदा ॥११॥
11. tato dadhāra taṁ garbhaṁ devī rājīvalocanā ,
tāṁ sa rājā priyāṁ bhāryāṁ drupadaḥ kurunandana ,
putrasnehānmahābāhuḥ sukhaṁ paryacarattadā.
11. tataḥ dadhāra taṃ garbhaṃ devī
rājīvalocanā tām saḥ rājā priyām bhāryām
drupadaḥ kurunandana putrasnehāt
mahābāhuḥ sukhaṃ paryacarat tadā
11. tataḥ rājīvalocanā devī taṃ garbhaṃ dadhāra.
kurunandana,
tadā saḥ mahābāhuḥ rājā drupadaḥ putrasnehāt priyām tām bhāryām sukhaṃ paryacarat.
11. Then, the lotus-eyed queen bore that pregnancy. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), at that time the mighty-armed King Drupada, out of affection for a son, happily attended to his beloved wife.
अपुत्रस्य ततो राज्ञो द्रुपदस्य महीपतेः ।
कन्यां प्रवररूपां तां प्राजायत नराधिप ॥१२॥
12. aputrasya tato rājño drupadasya mahīpateḥ ,
kanyāṁ pravararūpāṁ tāṁ prājāyata narādhipa.
12. aputrasya tataḥ rājñaḥ drupadasya mahīpateḥ
kanyām pravararūpām tām prājāyata narādhipa
12. tataḥ narādhipa,
aputrasya rājñaḥ drupadasya mahīpateḥ [patnī] tām pravararūpām kanyām prājāyata.
12. Then, O lord of men (narādhipa), for that sonless King Drupada, the lord of the earth, [his wife] gave birth to a most beautiful daughter.
अपुत्रस्य तु राज्ञः सा द्रुपदस्य यशस्विनी ।
ख्यापयामास राजेन्द्र पुत्रो जातो ममेति वै ॥१३॥
13. aputrasya tu rājñaḥ sā drupadasya yaśasvinī ,
khyāpayāmāsa rājendra putro jāto mameti vai.
13. aputrasya tu rājñaḥ sā drupadasya yaśasvinī
khyāpayāmāsa rājendra putraḥ jātaḥ mama iti vai
13. rājendra,
sā yaśasvinī tu aputrasya drupadasya rājñaḥ,
mama putraḥ jātaḥ iti vai khyāpayāmāsa.
13. O king of kings, that illustrious queen of King Drupada, who was without a son, indeed proclaimed, 'A son has been born to me!'
ततः स राजा द्रुपदः प्रच्छन्नाया नराधिप ।
पुत्रवत्पुत्रकार्याणि सर्वाणि समकारयत् ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ sa rājā drupadaḥ pracchannāyā narādhipa ,
putravatputrakāryāṇi sarvāṇi samakārayat.
14. tataḥ saḥ rājā drupadaḥ pracchannāyāḥ narādhipa
putravat putrakāryāṇi sarvāṇi samakārayat
14. narādhipa,
tataḥ saḥ rājā drupadaḥ pracchannāyāḥ sarvāṇi putrakāryāṇi putravat samakārayat.
14. O lord of men, thereupon, King Drupada had all the ceremonies and duties for a son performed for that child, whose true nature was concealed, treating it as a son.
रक्षणं चैव मन्त्रस्य महिषी द्रुपदस्य सा ।
चकार सर्वयत्नेन ब्रुवाणा पुत्र इत्युत ।
न हि तां वेद नगरे कश्चिदन्यत्र पार्षतात् ॥१५॥
15. rakṣaṇaṁ caiva mantrasya mahiṣī drupadasya sā ,
cakāra sarvayatnena bruvāṇā putra ityuta ,
na hi tāṁ veda nagare kaścidanyatra pārṣatāt.
15. rakṣaṇam ca eva mantrasya mahiṣī
drupadasya sā | cakāra sarvayatnena
bruvāṇā putraḥ iti uta | na hi tām
veda nagare kaścid anyatra pārṣatāt
15. sā drupadasya mahiṣī ca eva mantrasya rakṣaṇam sarvayatnena cakāra,
putraḥ iti uta bruvāṇā.
hi nagare pārṣatāt anyatra kaścid tām na veda.
15. And indeed, that queen of Drupada, stating 'It is a son,' carefully protected the secret (mantra) with all her effort. No one in the city, except those of the Pārṣata (clan), knew her true circumstances.
श्रद्दधानो हि तद्वाक्यं देवस्याद्भुततेजसः ।
छादयामास तां कन्यां पुमानिति च सोऽब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. śraddadhāno hi tadvākyaṁ devasyādbhutatejasaḥ ,
chādayāmāsa tāṁ kanyāṁ pumāniti ca so'bravīt.
16. śraddadhānaḥ hi tat vākyam devasya adbhutatejasaḥ
| chādayāmāsa tām kanyām pumān iti ca saḥ abravīt
16. hi saḥ adbhutatejasaḥ devasya tat vākyam śraddadhānaḥ tām kanyām chādayāmāsa ca pumān iti abravīt.
16. Indeed, believing that pronouncement of the deity of wondrous splendor, he concealed the fact that she was a girl and declared, 'It is a male child.'
जातकर्माणि सर्वाणि कारयामास पार्थिवः ।
पुंवद्विधानयुक्तानि शिखण्डीति च तां विदुः ॥१७॥
17. jātakarmāṇi sarvāṇi kārayāmāsa pārthivaḥ ,
puṁvadvidhānayuktāni śikhaṇḍīti ca tāṁ viduḥ.
17. jātakarmāṇi sarvāṇi kārayāmāsa pārthivaḥ puṃvat
vidhānayuktāni śikhaṇḍī iti ca tām viduḥ
17. pārthivaḥ sarvāṇi puṃvat vidhānayuktāni
jātakarmāṇi kārayāmāsa ca tām śikhaṇḍī iti viduḥ
17. The king had all the birth ceremonies performed for her, which were prescribed for a male child. And they knew her as Śikhaṇḍī.
अहमेकस्तु चारेण वचनान्नारदस्य च ।
ज्ञातवान्देववाक्येन अम्बायास्तपसा तथा ॥१८॥
18. ahamekastu cāreṇa vacanānnāradasya ca ,
jñātavāndevavākyena ambāyāstapasā tathā.
18. aham ekaḥ tu cāreṇa vacanāt nāradasya ca
jñātavān devavākyena ambāyāḥ tapasā tathā
18. aham ekaḥ tu cāreṇa nāradasya vacanāt ca
devavākyena tathā ambāyāḥ tapasā jñātavān
18. I alone, however, came to know this through a spy, by Nārada's words, by a divine voice, and also by Ambā's asceticism (tapas).
