वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततोऽर्जुनश्चित्रसेनं प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ।
मध्ये गन्धर्वसैन्यानां महेष्वासो महाद्युतिः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato'rjunaścitrasenaṁ prahasannidamabravīt ,
madhye gandharvasainyānāṁ maheṣvāso mahādyutiḥ.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ arjunaḥ citrasenam prahasan idam
abravīt madhye gandharvasainyānām maheṣvāsaḥ mahādyutiḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the great archer (Arjuna), of immense radiance, who was amidst the Gandharva armies, smilingly said this to Citrasena.
किं ते व्यवसितं वीर कौरवाणां विनिग्रहे ।
किमर्थं च सदारोऽयं निगृहीतः सुयोधनः ॥२॥
2. kiṁ te vyavasitaṁ vīra kauravāṇāṁ vinigrahe ,
kimarthaṁ ca sadāro'yaṁ nigṛhītaḥ suyodhanaḥ.
2. kim te vyavasitam vīra kauravāṇām vinigrahe
kimartham ca sadāraḥ ayam nigṛhītaḥ suyodhanaḥ
2. O hero, what is your intention regarding the capture of the Kauravas? And for what reason has this Suyodhana, along with his wife, been apprehended?
चित्रसेन उवाच ।
विदितोऽयमभिप्रायस्तत्रस्थेन महात्मना ।
दुर्योधनस्य पापस्य कर्णस्य च धनंजय ॥३॥
3. citrasena uvāca ,
vidito'yamabhiprāyastatrasthena mahātmanā ,
duryodhanasya pāpasya karṇasya ca dhanaṁjaya.
3. citrasenaḥ uvāca viditaḥ ayam abhiprāyaḥ tatrasthena
mahātmanā duryodhanasya pāpasya karṇasya ca dhanaṃjaya
3. Citrasena said: "O Dhananjaya (Arjuna), this intention regarding the wicked Duryodhana and Karṇa is known by that great soul who is present there."
वनस्थान्भवतो ज्ञात्वा क्लिश्यमानाननर्हवत् ।
इमेऽवहसितुं प्राप्ता द्रौपदीं च यशस्विनीम् ॥४॥
4. vanasthānbhavato jñātvā kliśyamānānanarhavat ,
ime'vahasituṁ prāptā draupadīṁ ca yaśasvinīm.
4. vanasthān bhavataḥ jñātvā kliśyamānān anarhavat
ime avahasitum prāptāḥ draupadīm ca yaśasvinīm
4. Having learned that you are dwelling in the forest and are suffering undeservedly, these people have arrived here to ridicule the glorious Draupadi.
ज्ञात्वा चिकीर्षितं चैषां मामुवाच सुरेश्वरः ।
गच्छ दुर्योधनं बद्ध्वा सामात्यं त्वमिहानय ॥५॥
5. jñātvā cikīrṣitaṁ caiṣāṁ māmuvāca sureśvaraḥ ,
gaccha duryodhanaṁ baddhvā sāmātyaṁ tvamihānaya.
5. jñātvā cikīrṣitam ca eṣām mām uvāca sureśvaraḥ
gaccha duryodhanam baddhvā sāmātyam tvam iha ānaya
5. And having understood their intention, the lord of the gods spoke to me: 'You go, bind Duryodhana along with his ministers, and bring him here!'
धनंजयश्च ते रक्ष्यः सह भ्रातृभिराहवे ।
स हि प्रियः सखा तुभ्यं शिष्यश्च तव पाण्डवः ॥६॥
6. dhanaṁjayaśca te rakṣyaḥ saha bhrātṛbhirāhave ,
sa hi priyaḥ sakhā tubhyaṁ śiṣyaśca tava pāṇḍavaḥ.
6. dhanañjayaḥ ca te rakṣyaḥ saha bhrātṛbhiḥ āhave
saḥ hi priyaḥ sakhā tubhyam śiṣyaḥ ca tava pāṇḍavaḥ
6. And Dhananjaya (Arjuna) must be protected by you, along with his brothers, in battle. For he is indeed a dear friend to you, and your disciple, the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
वचनाद्देवराजस्य ततोऽस्मीहागतो द्रुतम् ।
अयं दुरात्मा बद्धश्च गमिष्यामि सुरालयम् ॥७॥
7. vacanāddevarājasya tato'smīhāgato drutam ,
ayaṁ durātmā baddhaśca gamiṣyāmi surālayam.
7. vacanāt devarājasya tataḥ asmi iha āgataḥ drutam
ayam durātmā baddhaḥ ca gamiṣyāmi surālayam
7. Therefore, by the command of the king of the gods, I have quickly arrived here. Once this wicked person (Duryodhana) is bound, I will go to the abode of the gods.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
उत्सृज्यतां चित्रसेन भ्रातास्माकं सुयोधनः ।
धर्मराजस्य संदेशान्मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥८॥
8. arjuna uvāca ,
utsṛjyatāṁ citrasena bhrātāsmākaṁ suyodhanaḥ ,
dharmarājasya saṁdeśānmama cedicchasi priyam.
8. arjuna uvāca utsṛjyatām citrasena bhrātā asmākam
suyodhanaḥ dharmarājasya sandeśāt mama cet icchasi priyam
8. Arjuna said: "Citrasena, release our brother Suyodhana, if you wish to do something pleasing to me, as this is the message of the King of Righteousness (Dharmarāja)."
चित्रसेन उवाच ।
पापोऽयं नित्यसंदुष्टो न विमोक्षणमर्हति ।
प्रलब्धा धर्मराजस्य कृष्णायाश्च धनंजय ॥९॥
9. citrasena uvāca ,
pāpo'yaṁ nityasaṁduṣṭo na vimokṣaṇamarhati ,
pralabdhā dharmarājasya kṛṣṇāyāśca dhanaṁjaya.
9. citrasena uvāca pāpaḥ ayam nitya-saṃduṣṭaḥ na vimokṣaṇam
arhati pralabdhā dharmarājasya kṛṣṇāyāḥ ca dhanañjaya
9. Citrasena said: "This wicked man, always thoroughly evil, does not deserve release. O Dhanañjaya, deception (pralabdhā) has been committed against the King of Righteousness (Dharmarāja) and Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā)."
नेदं चिकीर्षितं तस्य कुन्तीपुत्रो महाव्रतः ।
जानाति धर्मराजो हि श्रुत्वा कुरु यथेच्छसि ॥१०॥
10. nedaṁ cikīrṣitaṁ tasya kuntīputro mahāvrataḥ ,
jānāti dharmarājo hi śrutvā kuru yathecchasi.
10. na idam cikīrṣitam tasya kuntīputraḥ mahāvrataḥ
jānāti dharmarājaḥ hi śrutvā kuru yathā icchasi
10. O son of Kuntī, of great vow (mahāvrata)! This (release of Suyodhana) is not the King of Righteousness's (Dharmarāja's) desire. Indeed, Dharmarāja knows (everything). Having heard this, you may do as you wish.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ते सर्व एव राजानमभिजग्मुर्युधिष्ठिरम् ।
अभिगम्य च तत्सर्वं शशंसुस्तस्य दुष्कृतम् ॥११॥
11. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te sarva eva rājānamabhijagmuryudhiṣṭhiram ,
abhigamya ca tatsarvaṁ śaśaṁsustasya duṣkṛtam.
11. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca te sarve eva rājānam abhijagmuḥ
yudhiṣṭhiram abhigamya ca tat sarvam śaśaṃsuḥ tasya duṣkṛtam
11. Vaiśampāyana said: "Then all of them approached King Yudhishthira, and having reached him, they recounted all of his (Suyodhana's) misdeeds."
अजातशत्रुस्तच्छ्रुत्वा गन्धर्वस्य वचस्तदा ।
मोक्षयामास तान्सर्वान्गन्धर्वान्प्रशशंस च ॥१२॥
12. ajātaśatrustacchrutvā gandharvasya vacastadā ,
mokṣayāmāsa tānsarvāngandharvānpraśaśaṁsa ca.
12. ajātaśatruḥ tat śrutvā gandharvasya vacaḥ tadā
mokṣayāmāsa tān sarvān gandharvān praśaśaṃsa ca
12. Then, having heard that statement from the Gandharva, Ajātaśatru released all those Gandharvas and praised them.
दिष्ट्या भवद्भिर्बलिभिः शक्तैः सर्वैर्न हिंसितः ।
दुर्वृत्तो धार्तराष्ट्रोऽयं सामात्यज्ञातिबान्धवः ॥१३॥
13. diṣṭyā bhavadbhirbalibhiḥ śaktaiḥ sarvairna hiṁsitaḥ ,
durvṛtto dhārtarāṣṭro'yaṁ sāmātyajñātibāndhavaḥ.
13. diṣṭyā bhavadbhiḥ balibhiḥ śaktaiḥ sarvaiḥ na hiṃsitaḥ
durvṛttaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ ayam sāmātyajñātibāndhavaḥ
13. It is fortunate that this ill-behaved son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), along with his ministers, kinsmen, and relatives, was not harmed by all of you powerful and capable beings.
उपकारो महांस्तात कृतोऽयं मम खेचराः ।
कुलं न परिभूतं मे मोक्षेणास्य दुरात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. upakāro mahāṁstāta kṛto'yaṁ mama khecarāḥ ,
kulaṁ na paribhūtaṁ me mokṣeṇāsya durātmanaḥ.
14. upakāraḥ mahān tāta kṛtaḥ ayam mama khecarāḥ
kulam na paribhūtam me mokṣeṇa asya durātmanaḥ
14. O sky-wanderers (khecarāḥ), dear friends, this great favor has been done for me. My family has not been disgraced by the release (mokṣa) of this wicked person.
आज्ञापयध्वमिष्टानि प्रीयामो दर्शनेन वः ।
प्राप्य सर्वानभिप्रायांस्ततो व्रजत माचिरम् ॥१५॥
15. ājñāpayadhvamiṣṭāni prīyāmo darśanena vaḥ ,
prāpya sarvānabhiprāyāṁstato vrajata māciram.
15. ājñāpayadhvam iṣṭāni prīyāmaḥ darśanena vaḥ
prāpya sarvān abhiprāyān tataḥ vrajata mā ciram
15. Please command what is desired! We are delighted by your presence. Having achieved all your objectives, then go without delay.
अनुज्ञातास्तु गन्धर्वाः पाण्डुपुत्रेण धीमता ।
सहाप्सरोभिः संहृष्टाश्चित्रसेनमुखा ययुः ॥१६॥
16. anujñātāstu gandharvāḥ pāṇḍuputreṇa dhīmatā ,
sahāpsarobhiḥ saṁhṛṣṭāścitrasenamukhā yayuḥ.
16. anuñātāḥ tu gandharvāḥ pāṇḍuputreṇa dhīmatā
saha apsarobhiḥ saṃhṛṣṭāḥ citrasenamukhāḥ yayuḥ
16. The Gandharvas, along with the Apsaras, led by Citrasena, joyful and indeed permitted by the intelligent son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna), then departed.
देवराडपि गन्धर्वान्मृतांस्तान्समजीवयत् ।
दिव्येनामृतवर्षेण ये हताः कौरवैर्युधि ॥१७॥
17. devarāḍapi gandharvānmṛtāṁstānsamajīvayat ,
divyenāmṛtavarṣeṇa ye hatāḥ kauravairyudhi.
17. devarāṭ api gandharvān mṛtān tān samajīvayat
divyena amṛtavarṣeṇa ye hatāḥ kauravaiḥ yudhi
17. The king of gods (Indra) also revived those dead Gandharvas who had been slain by the Kauravas in battle, using a divine shower of nectar.
ज्ञातींस्तानवमुच्याथ राजदारांश्च सर्वशः ।
कृत्वा च दुष्करं कर्म प्रीतियुक्ताश्च पाण्डवाः ॥१८॥
18. jñātīṁstānavamucyātha rājadārāṁśca sarvaśaḥ ,
kṛtvā ca duṣkaraṁ karma prītiyuktāśca pāṇḍavāḥ.
18. jñātīn tān avamucya atha rājādārān ca sarvaśaḥ
kṛtvā ca duṣkaram karma prītiyuktāḥ ca pāṇḍavāḥ
18. Having thus released those relatives and all the royal women, and having performed a difficult deed (karma), the Pāṇḍavas were filled with joy.
सस्त्रीकुमारैः कुरुभिः पूज्यमाना महारथाः ।
बभ्राजिरे महात्मानः कुरुमध्ये यथाग्नयः ॥१९॥
19. sastrīkumāraiḥ kurubhiḥ pūjyamānā mahārathāḥ ,
babhrājire mahātmānaḥ kurumadhye yathāgnayaḥ.
19. sastrīkumāraiḥ kurubhiḥ pūjyamānā mahārathāḥ
babhrājire mahātmānaḥ kurumadhye yathā agnayaḥ
19. Honored by the Kurus, including their women and children, those great charioteers, the great-souled (ātman) Pāṇḍavas, shone brightly among the Kurus like fires.
ततो दुर्योधनं मुच्य भ्रातृभिः सहितं तदा ।
युधिष्ठिरः सप्रणयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. tato duryodhanaṁ mucya bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaṁ tadā ,
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sapraṇayamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
20. tatas duryodhanam mucya bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitam tadā
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sapraṇayam idam vacanam abravīt
20. After releasing Duryodhana, who was accompanied by his brothers, Yudhishthira then spoke these affectionate words.
मा स्म तात पुनः कार्षीरीदृशं साहसं क्वचित् ।
न हि साहसकर्तारः सुखमेधन्ति भारत ॥२१॥
21. mā sma tāta punaḥ kārṣīrīdṛśaṁ sāhasaṁ kvacit ,
na hi sāhasakartāraḥ sukhamedhanti bhārata.
21. mā sma tāta punas kārṣīḥ īdṛśam sāhasam kvacit
na hi sāhasakartāraḥ sukham edhanti bhārata
21. My dear one, do not ever again commit such a rash act. For, O descendant of Bharata, those who engage in rash deeds do not attain happiness and prosperity.
स्वस्तिमान्सहितः सर्वैर्भ्रातृभिः कुरुनन्दन ।
गृहान्व्रज यथाकामं वैमनस्यं च मा कृथाः ॥२२॥
22. svastimānsahitaḥ sarvairbhrātṛbhiḥ kurunandana ,
gṛhānvraja yathākāmaṁ vaimanasyaṁ ca mā kṛthāḥ.
22. svastimān sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ kurunandana
gṛhān vraja yathākāmam vaimanasyam ca mā kṛthāḥ
22. O delight of the Kurus, return home safely, accompanied by all your brothers, as you desire, and do not entertain any ill-will or dejection.
पाण्डवेनाभ्यनुज्ञातो राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
विदीर्यमाणो व्रीडेन जगाम नगरं प्रति ॥२३॥
23. pāṇḍavenābhyanujñāto rājā duryodhanastadā ,
vidīryamāṇo vrīḍena jagāma nagaraṁ prati.
23. pāṇḍavena abhyanujñātaḥ rājā duryodhanaḥ tadā
vidīryamāṇaḥ vrīḍena jagāma nagaram prati
23. Then King Duryodhana, given leave by the Pandava (Yudhishthira), and feeling deeply mortified by shame, returned to the city.
तस्मिन्गते कौरवेये कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
भ्रातृभिः सहितो वीरः पूज्यमानो द्विजातिभिः ॥२४॥
24. tasmingate kauraveye kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vīraḥ pūjyamāno dvijātibhiḥ.
24. tasmin gate kauraveye kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ vīraḥ pūjyamānaḥ dvijātibhiḥ
24. After that scion of Kuru (Duryodhana) had departed, Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti and a hero, accompanied by his brothers, was being honored by the twice-born (dvijātibhiḥ).
तपोधनैश्च तैः सर्वैर्वृतः शक्र इवामरैः ।
वने द्वैतवने तस्मिन्विजहार मुदा युतः ॥२५॥
25. tapodhanaiśca taiḥ sarvairvṛtaḥ śakra ivāmaraiḥ ,
vane dvaitavane tasminvijahāra mudā yutaḥ.
25. tapodhanaiḥ ca taiḥ sarvaiḥ vṛtaḥ śakraḥ iva
amaraiḥ vane dvaitavane tasmin vijahāra mudā yutaḥ
25. He, surrounded by all those ascetics (tapodhanaiḥ) – as Indra is by the immortal gods – joyfully roamed in that Dwaita forest.
