वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाबाहुः केशवः प्रहसन्निव ।
अभूतपूर्वं भीमस्य मार्दवोपगतं वचः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etacchrutvā mahābāhuḥ keśavaḥ prahasanniva ,
abhūtapūrvaṁ bhīmasya mārdavopagataṁ vacaḥ.

prahasan iva abhūtapūrvam bhīmasya mārdavopagatam vacaḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard this, the mighty-armed Keśava (Krishna), as if laughing, observed Bhīma's words, which were unprecedentedly imbued with gentleness.
गिरेरिव लघुत्वं तच्छीतत्वमिव पावके ।
मत्वा रामानुजः शौरिः शार्ङ्गधन्वा वृकोदरम् ॥२॥
2. gireriva laghutvaṁ tacchītatvamiva pāvake ,
matvā rāmānujaḥ śauriḥ śārṅgadhanvā vṛkodaram.
2. gireḥ iva laghutvam tat śītatvam iva pāvake
matvā rāmānujaḥ śauriḥ śārṅgadhanvā vṛkodaram
2. Having considered this [unfitting behavior] to be like the lightness of a mountain or coldness within fire, Kṛṣṇa (Śauri), the younger brother of Balarama and wielder of the Śārṅga bow, [then addressed] Vṛkodara.
संतेजयंस्तदा वाग्भिर्मातरिश्वेव पावकम् ।
उवाच भीममासीनं कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतम् ॥३॥
3. saṁtejayaṁstadā vāgbhirmātariśveva pāvakam ,
uvāca bhīmamāsīnaṁ kṛpayābhipariplutam.
3. saṃtejayan tadā vāgbhiḥ mātariśvā iva pāvakam
uvāca bhīmam āsīnam kṛpayā abhipariplutam
3. Then, he (Kṛṣṇa) addressed Bhima, who was seated and overwhelmed with compassion, stimulating him with words just as the wind (mātariśvan) fans a fire.
त्वमन्यदा भीमसेन युद्धमेव प्रशंससि ।
वधाभिनन्दिनः क्रूरान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्मिमर्दिषुः ॥४॥
4. tvamanyadā bhīmasena yuddhameva praśaṁsasi ,
vadhābhinandinaḥ krūrāndhārtarāṣṭrānmimardiṣuḥ.
4. tvam anyadā bhīmasena yuddham eva praśaṃsasi
vadha abhinandinaḥ krūrān dhārtarāṣṭrān mimardiṣuḥ
4. O Bhimasena, at other times, you indeed praise battle, desiring to crush the cruel Dhārtarāṣṭras who delight in slaughter.
न च स्वपिषि जागर्षि न्युब्जः शेषे परंतप ।
घोरामशान्तां रुशतीं सदा वाचं प्रभाषसे ॥५॥
5. na ca svapiṣi jāgarṣi nyubjaḥ śeṣe paraṁtapa ,
ghorāmaśāntāṁ ruśatīṁ sadā vācaṁ prabhāṣase.
5. na ca svapiṣi jāgarṣi nyubjaḥ śeṣe parantapa
ghorām aśāntām ruśatīm sadā vācam prabhāṣase
5. O tormentor of foes (parantapa), you neither sleep nor wake; you lie prostrate. You constantly utter terrible, agitated, and wrathful words.
निःश्वसन्नग्निवर्णेन संतप्तः स्वेन मन्युना ।
अप्रशान्तमना भीम सधूम इव पावकः ॥६॥
6. niḥśvasannagnivarṇena saṁtaptaḥ svena manyunā ,
apraśāntamanā bhīma sadhūma iva pāvakaḥ.
6. niḥśvasan agnivarṇena saṃtaptaḥ svena manyunā
apraśāntamanāḥ bhīma sadhūmaḥ iva pāvakaḥ
6. O Bhima, sighing and tormented by your own fiery rage, you are like a smoking fire, with your mind unpacified.
एकान्ते निष्टनञ्शेषे भारार्त इव दुर्बलः ।
अपि त्वां केचिदुन्मत्तं मन्यन्तेऽतद्विदो जनाः ॥७॥
7. ekānte niṣṭanañśeṣe bhārārta iva durbalaḥ ,
api tvāṁ kecidunmattaṁ manyante'tadvido janāḥ.
7. ekānte niṣṭanan śeṣe bhārārtaḥ iva durbalaḥ api
tvāṃ kecit unmattaṃ manyante atadvidaḥ janāḥ
7. In solitude, you lie groaning, like a weak person burdened with affliction. Indeed, some people, unaware of the truth, even consider you insane.
आरुज्य वृक्षान्निर्मूलान्गजः परिभुजन्निव ।
निघ्नन्पद्भिः क्षितिं भीम निष्टनन्परिधावसि ॥८॥
8. ārujya vṛkṣānnirmūlāngajaḥ paribhujanniva ,
nighnanpadbhiḥ kṣitiṁ bhīma niṣṭananparidhāvasi.
8. ārujya vṛkṣān nirmūlān gajaḥ paribhujan iva
nighnan padbhiḥ kṣitiṃ bhīma niṣṭanan paridhāvasi
8. O Bhima, you run around groaning, uprooting trees and striking the earth with your feet, just like an elephant uprooting trees and then devouring them.
नास्मिञ्जनेऽभिरमसे रहः क्षियसि पाण्डव ।
नान्यं निशि दिवा वापि कदाचिदभिनन्दसि ॥९॥
9. nāsmiñjane'bhiramase rahaḥ kṣiyasi pāṇḍava ,
nānyaṁ niśi divā vāpi kadācidabhinandasi.
9. na asmin jane abhiramase rahaḥ kṣiyasi pāṇḍava
na anyaṃ niśi divā vā api kadācit abhinandasi
9. O Pāṇḍava, you do not find joy among these people, and you dwell in seclusion. You never greet anyone else with delight, neither by night nor by day.
अकस्मात्स्मयमानश्च रहस्यास्से रुदन्निव ।
जान्वोर्मूर्धानमाधाय चिरमास्से प्रमीलितः ॥१०॥
10. akasmātsmayamānaśca rahasyāsse rudanniva ,
jānvormūrdhānamādhāya ciramāsse pramīlitaḥ.
10. akasmāt smayamānaḥ ca rahasya āsse rudan iva
jānvoh mūrdhānam ādhāya ciram āsse pramīlitaḥ
10. You suddenly smile, and then secretly sit as if weeping. Placing your head on your knees, you remain for a long time with your eyes closed.
भ्रुकुटिं च पुनः कुर्वन्नोष्ठौ च विलिहन्निव ।
अभीक्ष्णं दृश्यसे भीम सर्वं तन्मन्युकारितम् ॥११॥
11. bhrukuṭiṁ ca punaḥ kurvannoṣṭhau ca vilihanniva ,
abhīkṣṇaṁ dṛśyase bhīma sarvaṁ tanmanyukāritam.
11. bhrukuṭim ca punaḥ kurvan oṣṭhau ca vilihan iva
abhīkṣṇam dṛśyase bhīma sarvam tat manyukāritam
11. And again frowning, and as if licking your lips, you are frequently seen, Bhīma. All of that is caused by anger.
यथा पुरस्तात्सविता दृश्यते शुक्रमुच्चरन् ।
यथा च पश्चान्निर्मुक्तो ध्रुवं पर्येति रश्मिवान् ॥१२॥
12. yathā purastātsavitā dṛśyate śukramuccaran ,
yathā ca paścānnirmukto dhruvaṁ paryeti raśmivān.
12. yathā purastāt savitā dṛśyate śukram uccaran
yathā ca paścāt nirmuktaḥ dhruvam paryeti raśmivān
12. Just as the sun (savitā) is seen rising brightly in the east, and just as after being released in the west, the radiant (sun) certainly moves around.
तथा सत्यं ब्रवीम्येतन्नास्ति तस्य व्यतिक्रमः ।
हन्ताहं गदयाभ्येत्य दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ॥१३॥
13. tathā satyaṁ bravīmyetannāsti tasya vyatikramaḥ ,
hantāhaṁ gadayābhyetya duryodhanamamarṣaṇam.
13. tathā satyam bravīmi etat na asti tasya vyatikramaḥ
hantā aham gadayā abhyetya duryodhanam amarṣaṇam
13. Therefore, I speak this truth: there will be no deviation from it. I will surely kill the unforgiving Duryodhana after approaching him with my mace.
इति स्म मध्ये भ्रातॄणां सत्येनालभसे गदाम् ।
तस्य ते प्रशमे बुद्धिर्धीयतेऽद्य परंतप ॥१४॥
14. iti sma madhye bhrātṝṇāṁ satyenālabhase gadām ,
tasya te praśame buddhirdhīyate'dya paraṁtapa.
14. iti sma madhye bhrātṝṇām satyena ālabhase gadām
| tasya te praśame buddhiḥ dhīyate adya paraṃtapa
14. Indeed, among your brothers, you used to grasp the mace with truthfulness. But now, O scorcher of foes, your mind is set on peace.
अहो युद्धप्रतीपानि युद्धकाल उपस्थिते ।
पश्यसीवाप्रतीपानि किं त्वां भीर्भीम विन्दति ॥१५॥
15. aho yuddhapratīpāni yuddhakāla upasthite ,
paśyasīvāpratīpāni kiṁ tvāṁ bhīrbhīma vindati.
15. aho yuddhapratīpāni yuddhakāle upasthite |
paśyasi iva apratīpāni kim tvām bhīḥ bhīma vindati
15. Oh, when the time for battle has arrived, you see things adverse to it. You seem to see things that are not adverse as if they were. What fear, O Bhīma, possesses you?
अहो पार्थ निमित्तानि विपरीतानि पश्यसि ।
स्वप्नान्ते जागरान्ते च तस्मात्प्रशममिच्छसि ॥१६॥
16. aho pārtha nimittāni viparītāni paśyasi ,
svapnānte jāgarānte ca tasmātpraśamamicchasi.
16. aho pārtha nimittāni viparītāni paśyasi |
svapnānte jāgarānte ca tasmāt praśamam icchasi
16. Oh Pārtha, you see inauspicious signs both in your dreams and in your waking state, and therefore you desire peace.
अहो नाशंससे किंचित्पुंस्त्वं क्लीब इवात्मनि ।
कश्मलेनाभिपन्नोऽसि तेन ते विकृतं मनः ॥१७॥
17. aho nāśaṁsase kiṁcitpuṁstvaṁ klība ivātmani ,
kaśmalenābhipanno'si tena te vikṛtaṁ manaḥ.
17. aho na āśaṃsase kiṃcit puṃstvam klībaḥ iva ātmani
| kaśmalena abhipannaḥ asi tena te vikṛtam manaḥ
17. Oh, you do not affirm any manliness in your own (ātman) self, like an impotent person. You have been overcome by delusion, and therefore your mind is distorted.
उद्वेपते ते हृदयं मनस्ते प्रविषीदति ।
ऊरुस्तम्भगृहीतोऽसि तस्मात्प्रशममिच्छसि ॥१८॥
18. udvepate te hṛdayaṁ manaste praviṣīdati ,
ūrustambhagṛhīto'si tasmātpraśamamicchasi.
18. udvepate te hṛdayam manaḥ te praviṣīdati
ūrustambhagṛhītaḥ asi tasmāt praśamam icchasi
18. Your heart is trembling, and your mind is sinking into despair. You are afflicted by a paralysis of the thighs, and for this reason, you desire tranquility.
अनित्यं किल मर्त्यस्य चित्तं पार्थ चलाचलम् ।
वातवेगप्रचलिता अष्ठीला शाल्मलेरिव ॥१९॥
19. anityaṁ kila martyasya cittaṁ pārtha calācalam ,
vātavegapracalitā aṣṭhīlā śālmaleriva.
19. anityam kila martyasya cittam pārtha calācalam
vātavegāpracalitā aṣṭhīlā śālmaleḥ iva
19. O Pārtha, the mind (citta) of a mortal being is indeed impermanent and extremely unsteady, like a hard block (aṣṭhīlā) from a silk-cotton tree that is agitated by the force of the wind.
तवैषा विकृता बुद्धिर्गवां वागिव मानुषी ।
मनांसि पाण्डुपुत्राणां मज्जयत्यप्लवानिव ॥२०॥
20. tavaiṣā vikṛtā buddhirgavāṁ vāgiva mānuṣī ,
manāṁsi pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ majjayatyaplavāniva.
20. tava eṣā vikṛtā buddhiḥ gavām vāk iva mānuṣī
manāṃsi pāṇḍuputrāṇām majjayati aplavāni iva
20. This distorted intellect (buddhi) of yours, which is as unnatural as human speech from cows, causes the minds (manas) of the sons of Pāṇḍu to sink, just as if they were without rafts.
इदं मे महदाश्चर्यं पर्वतस्येव सर्पणम् ।
यदीदृशं प्रभाषेथा भीमसेनासमं वचः ॥२१॥
21. idaṁ me mahadāścaryaṁ parvatasyeva sarpaṇam ,
yadīdṛśaṁ prabhāṣethā bhīmasenāsamaṁ vacaḥ.
21. idam me mahat āścaryam parvatasya iva sarpaṇam
yat īdṛśam prabhāṣethāḥ bhīmasenāsamam vacaḥ
21. This is a great astonishment to me, like a mountain suddenly moving, that you would utter such words, which are indeed unworthy of Bhīmasena.
स दृष्ट्वा स्वानि कर्माणि कुले जन्म च भारत ।
उत्तिष्ठस्व विषादं मा कृथा वीर स्थिरो भव ॥२२॥
22. sa dṛṣṭvā svāni karmāṇi kule janma ca bhārata ,
uttiṣṭhasva viṣādaṁ mā kṛthā vīra sthiro bhava.
22. sa dṛṣṭvā svāni karmāṇi kule janma ca bhārata
uttiṣṭhasva viṣādam mā kṛthāḥ vīra sthiraḥ bhava
22. O Bhārata, considering your own duties (karma) and your noble birth, rise up! Do not succumb to dejection, O hero, be resolute!
न चैतदनुरूपं ते यत्ते ग्लानिररिंदम ।
यदोजसा न लभते क्षत्रियो न तदश्नुते ॥२३॥
23. na caitadanurūpaṁ te yatte glānirariṁdama ,
yadojasā na labhate kṣatriyo na tadaśnute.
23. na ca etat anurūpam te yat te glāniḥ ariṃdama
yat ojasā na labhate kṣatriyaḥ na tat aśnute
23. And this dejection (glāni), O subduer of enemies, is not appropriate for you. A warrior (kṣatriya) who does not obtain something by his own vigor (ojas) will not enjoy it.
