मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ऋषयस्तु महाघोरान्दृष्ट्वोत्पातान्पृथग्विधान् ।
अकुर्वञ्शान्तिमुद्विग्ना लोकानां लोकभावनाः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
ṛṣayastu mahāghorāndṛṣṭvotpātānpṛthagvidhān ,
akurvañśāntimudvignā lokānāṁ lokabhāvanāḥ.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: But the sages, seeing very dreadful portents of various kinds, became anxious. As protectors of the worlds, they performed propitiatory rites for the people.
निवसन्ति वने ये तु तस्मिंश्चैत्ररथे जनाः ।
तेऽब्रुवन्नेष नोऽनर्थः पावकेनाहृतो महान् ।
संगम्य षड्भिः पत्नीभिः सप्तर्षीणामिति स्म ह ॥२॥
2. nivasanti vane ye tu tasmiṁścaitrarathe janāḥ ,
te'bruvanneṣa no'narthaḥ pāvakenāhṛto mahān ,
saṁgamya ṣaḍbhiḥ patnībhiḥ saptarṣīṇāmiti sma ha.
2. nivasanti vane ye tu tasmin caitrarathe
janāḥ te abruvan eṣaḥ naḥ anarthaḥ
pāvakena āhṛtaḥ mahān saṅgamya
ṣaḍbhiḥ patnībhiḥ saptarṣīṇām iti sma ha
2. And the people who resided in that Caitraratha forest said, 'This great misfortune has been brought upon us by fire, specifically by the fire's union with the six wives of the Seven Sages (saptarṣis).' So it is traditionally recounted.
अपरे गरुडीमाहुस्त्वयानर्थोऽयमाहृतः ।
यैर्दृष्टा सा तदा देवी तस्या रूपेण गच्छती ।
न तु तत्स्वाहया कर्म कृतं जानाति वै जनः ॥३॥
3. apare garuḍīmāhustvayānartho'yamāhṛtaḥ ,
yairdṛṣṭā sā tadā devī tasyā rūpeṇa gacchatī ,
na tu tatsvāhayā karma kṛtaṁ jānāti vai janaḥ.
3. apare garuḍīm āhuḥ tvayā anarthaḥ
ayam āhṛtaḥ yaiḥ dṛṣṭā sā tadā devī
tasyā rūpeṇa gacchatī na tu tat
svāhayā karma kṛtam jānāti vai janaḥ
3. Others said to Garuḍī, "You have brought about this misfortune." Those who saw that goddess at the time saw her moving in her form. However, people generally do not know that the action was performed by Svāhā.
सुपर्णी तु वचः श्रुत्वा ममायं तनयस्त्विति ।
उपगम्य शनैः स्कन्दमाहाहं जननी तव ॥४॥
4. suparṇī tu vacaḥ śrutvā mamāyaṁ tanayastviti ,
upagamya śanaiḥ skandamāhāhaṁ jananī tava.
4. suparṇī tu vacaḥ śrutvā mama ayam tanayaḥ tu
iti upagamya śanaiḥ skandam āha aham jananī tava
4. But Suparṇī, having heard these words, slowly approached Skanda and said, "This is my son. I am your mother."
अथ सप्तर्षयः श्रुत्वा जातं पुत्रं महौजसम् ।
तत्यजुः षट्तदा पत्नीर्विना देवीमरुन्धतीम् ॥५॥
5. atha saptarṣayaḥ śrutvā jātaṁ putraṁ mahaujasam ,
tatyajuḥ ṣaṭtadā patnīrvinā devīmarundhatīm.
5. atha saptarṣayaḥ śrutvā jātam putram mahaujasam
tatyajuḥ ṣaṭ tadā patnīḥ vinā devīm arundhatīm
5. Then, having heard that a greatly powerful son was born, the seven sages consequently abandoned six wives, with the exception of the goddess Arundhatī.
षड्भिरेव तदा जातमाहुस्तद्वनवासिनः ।
सप्तर्षीनाह च स्वाहा मम पुत्रोऽयमित्युत ।
अहं जाने नैतदेवमिति राजन्पुनः पुनः ॥६॥
6. ṣaḍbhireva tadā jātamāhustadvanavāsinaḥ ,
saptarṣīnāha ca svāhā mama putro'yamityuta ,
ahaṁ jāne naitadevamiti rājanpunaḥ punaḥ.
6. ṣaḍbhiḥ eva tadā jātam āhuḥ tat
vanavāsinaḥ saptarṣīn āha ca svāhā
mama putraḥ ayam iti uta aham jāne
na etat evam iti rājan punaḥ punaḥ
6. The forest dwellers then declared that he was born from the six (wives). And Svāhā said to the seven sages, "Indeed, this son is mine." (However), "I know, O King, that this is not truly the case," she repeatedly stated.
विश्वामित्रस्तु कृत्वेष्टिं सप्तर्षीणां महामुनिः ।
पावकं कामसंतप्तमदृष्टः पृष्ठतोऽन्वगात् ।
तत्तेन निखिलं सर्वमवबुद्धं यथातथम् ॥७॥
7. viśvāmitrastu kṛtveṣṭiṁ saptarṣīṇāṁ mahāmuniḥ ,
pāvakaṁ kāmasaṁtaptamadṛṣṭaḥ pṛṣṭhato'nvagāt ,
tattena nikhilaṁ sarvamavabuddhaṁ yathātatham.
7. viśvāmitraḥ tu kṛtvā iṣṭim saptarṣīṇām
mahāmuniḥ pāvakam kāmasaṃtaptam
adṛṣṭaḥ pṛṣṭataḥ anvagāt tat tena
nikhilam sarvam avabuddham yathātatham
7. However, the great sage Viśvāmitra, having performed a sacrifice for the seven sages (Saptarṣis), unperceived, followed the fire god (Pāvaka) from behind, as he was tormented by desire (kāma). All of that was then entirely understood by him just as it truly happened.
विश्वामित्रस्तु प्रथमं कुमारं शरणं गतः ।
स्तवं दिव्यं संप्रचक्रे महासेनस्य चापि सः ॥८॥
8. viśvāmitrastu prathamaṁ kumāraṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ ,
stavaṁ divyaṁ saṁpracakre mahāsenasya cāpi saḥ.
8. viśvāmitraḥ tu prathamam kumāram śaraṇam gataḥ
stavam divyam saṃpracakre mahāsenasya ca api saḥ
8. However, Viśvāmitra first sought refuge with Kumāra and also composed a divine hymn in praise of Mahāsena.
मङ्गलानि च सर्वाणि कौमाराणि त्रयोदश ।
जातकर्मादिकास्तस्य क्रियाश्चक्रे महामुनिः ॥९॥
9. maṅgalāni ca sarvāṇi kaumārāṇi trayodaśa ,
jātakarmādikāstasya kriyāścakre mahāmuniḥ.
9. maṅgalāni ca sarvāṇi kaumārāṇi trayodaśa
jātakarmādikāḥ tasya kriyāḥ cakre mahāmuniḥ
9. And the great sage performed all thirteen auspicious ceremonies for the boy (Kumāra), including those beginning with the birth rite (jātakarma).
षड्वक्त्रस्य तु माहात्म्यं कुक्कुटस्य च साधनम् ।
शक्त्या देव्याः साधनं च तथा पारिषदामपि ॥१०॥
10. ṣaḍvaktrasya tu māhātmyaṁ kukkuṭasya ca sādhanam ,
śaktyā devyāḥ sādhanaṁ ca tathā pāriṣadāmapi.
10. ṣaḍvaktrasya tu māhātmyam kukkuṭasya ca sādhanam
śaktyā devyāḥ sādhanam ca tathā pāriṣadām api
10. And he spoke of the greatness of Ṣaḍvaktra (Kumāra, the six-faced one), the efficacy of his rooster, and the accomplishments achieved through the power (śakti) of the Goddess (Devī), as well as those of his attendants (pāriṣadas).
विश्वामित्रश्चकारैतत्कर्म लोकहिताय वै ।
तस्मादृषिः कुमारस्य विश्वामित्रोऽभवत्प्रियः ॥११॥
11. viśvāmitraścakāraitatkarma lokahitāya vai ,
tasmādṛṣiḥ kumārasya viśvāmitro'bhavatpriyaḥ.
11. viśvāmitraḥ cakāra etat karma lokahitāya vai
tasmāt ṛṣiḥ kumārasya viśvāmitraḥ abhavat priyaḥ
11. Viśvāmitra indeed performed this deed for the welfare of the people. Therefore, the sage Viśvāmitra became dear to the boy (Rāma).
अन्वजानाच्च स्वाहाया रूपान्यत्वं महामुनिः ।
अब्रवीच्च मुनीन्सर्वान्नापराध्यन्ति वै स्त्रियः ।
श्रुत्वा तु तत्त्वतस्तस्मात्ते पत्नीः सर्वतोऽत्यजन् ॥१२॥
12. anvajānācca svāhāyā rūpānyatvaṁ mahāmuniḥ ,
abravīcca munīnsarvānnāparādhyanti vai striyaḥ ,
śrutvā tu tattvatastasmātte patnīḥ sarvato'tyajan.
12. anvajānāt ca svāhāyāḥ rūpānyatvam
mahāmuniḥ abravīt ca munīn sarvān na
aparādhyanti vai striyaḥ śrutvā tu tattvataḥ
tasmāt te patnīḥ sarvataḥ atyajan
12. The great sage (Agni, or a divine voice) acknowledged Svāhā's transformation of form. He also declared to all the sages, "Indeed, women are not at fault." However, having truly heard this principle from him, they (the sages) completely abandoned their wives.
स्कन्दं श्रुत्वा ततो देवा वासवं सहिताब्रुवन् ।
अविषह्यबलं स्कन्दं जहि शक्राशु माचिरम् ॥१३॥
13. skandaṁ śrutvā tato devā vāsavaṁ sahitābruvan ,
aviṣahyabalaṁ skandaṁ jahi śakrāśu māciram.
13. skandam śrutvā tataḥ devāḥ vāsavam sahitāḥ abruvan
aviṣahyabalam skandam jahi śakra āśu mā ciram
13. Then, having heard of Skanda, the assembled gods said to Indra, "O Indra, quickly kill Skanda, whose strength is irresistible. Do not delay!"
यदि वा न निहंस्येनमद्येन्द्रोऽयं भविष्यति ।
त्रैलोक्यं संनिगृह्यास्मांस्त्वां च शक्र महाबलः ॥१४॥
14. yadi vā na nihaṁsyenamadyendro'yaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
trailokyaṁ saṁnigṛhyāsmāṁstvāṁ ca śakra mahābalaḥ.
14. yadi vā na nihaṃsi enam adya indraḥ ayam bhaviṣyati
trailokyam saṃnigṛhya asmān tvām ca śakra mahābalaḥ
14. If you do not kill him today, O Indra, this mighty one will become the new Indra, seizing control of the three worlds, us, and even you!
स तानुवाच व्यथितो बालोऽयं सुमहाबलः ।
स्रष्टारमपि लोकानां युधि विक्रम्य नाशयेत् ॥१५॥
15. sa tānuvāca vyathito bālo'yaṁ sumahābalaḥ ,
sraṣṭāramapi lokānāṁ yudhi vikramya nāśayet.
15. saḥ tān uvāca vyathitaḥ bālaḥ ayam sumahābalaḥ
sraṣṭāram api lokānām yudhi vikramya nāśayet
15. Distressed, he said to them, "This boy is extraordinarily powerful. He could even destroy the creator of the worlds by fighting valiantly in battle."
सर्वास्त्वद्याभिगच्छन्तु स्कन्दं लोकस्य मातरः ।
कामवीर्या घ्नन्तु चैनं तथेत्युक्त्वा च ता ययुः ॥१६॥
16. sarvāstvadyābhigacchantu skandaṁ lokasya mātaraḥ ,
kāmavīryā ghnantu cainaṁ tathetyuktvā ca tā yayuḥ.
16. sarvāḥ tu adya abhigacchantu skandam lokasya mātaraḥ
kāmavīryāḥ ghnantu ca enam tathā iti uktvā ca tāḥ yayuḥ
16. "Indeed, all the mothers of the world should now approach Skanda. Let them, whose power (vīrya) is desire, kill him." And saying "So be it," they departed.
तमप्रतिबलं दृष्ट्वा विषण्णवदनास्तु ताः ।
अशक्योऽयं विचिन्त्यैवं तमेव शरणं ययुः ॥१७॥
17. tamapratibalaṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣaṇṇavadanāstu tāḥ ,
aśakyo'yaṁ vicintyaivaṁ tameva śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ.
17. tam apratibalam dṛṣṭvā viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ tu tāḥ
aśakyaḥ ayam vicintya evam tam eva śaraṇam yayuḥ
17. Having seen him to be invincible, those mothers, with saddened faces and thinking, "This one is impossible to overcome," went to him alone for refuge.
ऊचुश्चापि त्वमस्माकं पुत्रोऽस्माभिर्धृतं जगत् ।
अभिनन्दस्व नः सर्वाः प्रस्नुताः स्नेहविक्लवाः ॥१८॥
18. ūcuścāpi tvamasmākaṁ putro'smābhirdhṛtaṁ jagat ,
abhinandasva naḥ sarvāḥ prasnutāḥ snehaviklavāḥ.
18. ūcuḥ ca api tvam asmākam putraḥ asmābhiḥ dhṛtam
jagat abhinandasva naḥ sarvāḥ prasnutāḥ snehaviklavāḥ
18. And they also said, "You are our son. We sustain the world. All of us, with milk flowing and overcome by affection, welcome (abhinandasva) us (as your mothers)."
ताः संपूज्य महासेनः कामांश्चासां प्रदाय सः ।
अपश्यदग्निमायान्तं पितरं बलिनां बली ॥१९॥
19. tāḥ saṁpūjya mahāsenaḥ kāmāṁścāsāṁ pradāya saḥ ,
apaśyadagnimāyāntaṁ pitaraṁ balināṁ balī.
19. tāḥ saṃpūjya mahāsenaḥ kāmān ca āsām pradāya
saḥ apaśyat agnim āyāntam pitaram balinām balī
19. After honoring those mothers and granting them their desires, the mighty Mahāsena (Skanda) saw Agni, his father, approaching; Agni being the strongest among the strong.
स तु संपूजितस्तेन सह मातृगणेन ह ।
परिवार्य महासेनं रक्षमाणः स्थितः स्थिरम् ॥२०॥
20. sa tu saṁpūjitastena saha mātṛgaṇena ha ,
parivārya mahāsenaṁ rakṣamāṇaḥ sthitaḥ sthiram.
20. saḥ tu saṃpūjitaḥ tena saha mātṛgaṇena ha
parivārya mahāsenam rakṣamāṇaḥ sthitaḥ sthiram
20. Indeed, Agni, honored by him (Skanda) along with the group of mothers, remained firmly encircling Mahāsena (Skanda), protecting him.
सर्वासां या तु मातॄणां नारी क्रोधसमुद्भवा ।
धात्री सा पुत्रवत्स्कन्दं शूलहस्ताभ्यरक्षत ॥२१॥
21. sarvāsāṁ yā tu mātṝṇāṁ nārī krodhasamudbhavā ,
dhātrī sā putravatskandaṁ śūlahastābhyarakṣata.
21. sarvāsām yā tu mātṝṇām nārī krodhasamudbhavā
dhātrī sā putravat skandam śūlahastā abhi arakṣata
21. Among all the mothers, that woman who arose from wrath, Dhātrī, she, holding a spear in her hand, protected Skanda like her own son.
लोहितस्योदधेः कन्या क्रूरा लोहितभोजना ।
परिष्वज्य महासेनं पुत्रवत्पर्यरक्षत ॥२२॥
22. lohitasyodadheḥ kanyā krūrā lohitabhojanā ,
pariṣvajya mahāsenaṁ putravatparyarakṣata.
22. lohitasya udadheḥ kanyā krūrā lohitabhojanā
pariṣvajya mahāsenam putravat pari arakṣata
22. The cruel daughter of the Red Ocean, who consumes blood, embracing Mahāsena (Skanda), protected him like her own son.
अग्निर्भूत्वा नैगमेयश्छागवक्त्रो बहुप्रजः ।
रमयामास शैलस्थं बालं क्रीडनकैरिव ॥२३॥
23. agnirbhūtvā naigameyaśchāgavaktro bahuprajaḥ ,
ramayāmāsa śailasthaṁ bālaṁ krīḍanakairiva.
23. agniḥ bhūtvā naigameyaḥ chāgavaktraḥ bahuprajaḥ
ramayāmāsa śailasthaṃ bālaṃ krīḍanakaiḥ iva
23. Agni, having assumed the form of Naigameya – the goat-faced, prolific deity – amused the child residing on the mountain, as if with toys.
