लोमश उवाच ।
भरद्वाजस्तु कौन्तेय कृत्वा स्वाध्यायमाह्निकम् ।
समित्कलापमादाय प्रविवेश स्वमाश्रमम् ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
bharadvājastu kaunteya kṛtvā svādhyāyamāhnikam ,
samitkalāpamādāya praviveśa svamāśramam.

āhnikam samitkalāpam ādāya praviveśa svam āśramam
1. Lomasha said: "O son of Kunti, Bharadvaja, having performed his daily sacred study (svādhyāya) and having taken a bundle of firewood, entered his own hermitage (āśrama)."
तं स्म दृष्ट्वा पुरा सर्वे प्रत्युत्तिष्ठन्ति पावकाः ।
न त्वेनमुपतिष्ठन्ति हतपुत्रं तदाग्नयः ॥२॥
2. taṁ sma dṛṣṭvā purā sarve pratyuttiṣṭhanti pāvakāḥ ,
na tvenamupatiṣṭhanti hataputraṁ tadāgnayaḥ.
2. tam sma dṛṣṭvā purā sarve pratyuttiṣṭhanti pāvakāḥ
na tu enam upatiṣṭhanti hataputram tadā agnayaḥ
2. Formerly, upon seeing him, all the sacred fires (pāvaka) would stand up in reverence. But then, with his son killed, the fires (agni) did not honor him.
वैकृतं त्वग्निहोत्रे स लक्षयित्वा महातपाः ।
तमन्धं शूद्रमासीनं गृहपालमथाब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. vaikṛtaṁ tvagnihotre sa lakṣayitvā mahātapāḥ ,
tamandhaṁ śūdramāsīnaṁ gṛhapālamathābravīt.
3. vaikṛtam tu agnihotre saḥ lakṣayitvā mahātapaḥ
tam andham śūdram āsīnam gṛhapālam atha abravīt
3. The great ascetic (Mahātapas), having noticed a defect in the fire sacrifice (agnihotra), then spoke to that blind śūdra house-keeper who was sitting there.
किं नु मे नाग्नयः शूद्र प्रतिनन्दन्ति दर्शनम् ।
त्वं चापि न यथापूर्वं कच्चित्क्षेममिहाश्रमे ॥४॥
4. kiṁ nu me nāgnayaḥ śūdra pratinandanti darśanam ,
tvaṁ cāpi na yathāpūrvaṁ kaccitkṣemamihāśrame.
4. kim nu me na agnayaḥ śūdra pratinandanti darśanam
tvam ca api na yathāpūrvam kaccit kṣemam iha āśrame
4. O śūdra, why do the fires not welcome my presence? And you too are not as before. Is all well here in the hermitage (āśrama)?
कच्चिन्न रैभ्यं पुत्रो मे गतवानल्पचेतनः ।
एतदाचक्ष्व मे शीघ्रं न हि मे शुध्यते मनः ॥५॥
5. kaccinna raibhyaṁ putro me gatavānalpacetanaḥ ,
etadācakṣva me śīghraṁ na hi me śudhyate manaḥ.
5. kaccit na raibhyam putraḥ me gatavān alpacetanaḥ
etat ācakṣva me śīghram na hi me śudhyate manaḥ
5. I hope my dull-witted son has not gone to Raibhya? Tell me this quickly, for my mind is indeed not clear.
शूद्र उवाच ।
रैभ्यं गतो नूनमसौ सुतस्ते मन्दचेतनः ।
तथा हि निहतः शेते राक्षसेन बलीयसा ॥६॥
6. śūdra uvāca ,
raibhyaṁ gato nūnamasau sutaste mandacetanaḥ ,
tathā hi nihataḥ śete rākṣasena balīyasā.
6. śūdra uvāca raibhyam gataḥ nūnam asau sutaḥ te
mandacetanaḥ tathā hi nihataḥ śete rākṣasena balīyasā
6. The śūdra said: "Indeed, that dull-witted son of yours has gone to Raibhya. Because of this, he lies there slain by a very powerful demon (rākṣasa)."
प्रकाल्यमानस्तेनायं शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा ।
अग्न्यागारं प्रति द्वारि मया दोर्भ्यां निवारितः ॥७॥
7. prakālyamānastenāyaṁ śūlahastena rakṣasā ,
agnyāgāraṁ prati dvāri mayā dorbhyāṁ nivāritaḥ.
7. prakālyamānaḥ tena ayaṃ śūlahastena rakṣasā
agnyāgāraṃ prati dvāri mayā dorbhyāṃ nivāritaḥ
7. This person, who was being dragged by that spear-wielding Rākṣasa, I stopped at the door of the fire-chamber with my two arms.
ततः स निहतो ह्यत्र जलकामोऽशुचिर्ध्रुवम् ।
संभावितो हि तूर्णेन शूलहस्तेन रक्षसा ॥८॥
8. tataḥ sa nihato hyatra jalakāmo'śucirdhruvam ,
saṁbhāvito hi tūrṇena śūlahastena rakṣasā.
8. tataḥ saḥ nihataḥ hi atra jalakāmaḥ aśuciḥ
dhruvam sambhāvitaḥ hi tūrṇena śūlahastena rakṣasā
8. Then, he, desiring water and certainly impure, was slain here. Indeed, he was quickly killed by the spear-wielding Rākṣasa.
लोमश उवाच ।
भरद्वाजस्तु शूद्रस्य तच्छ्रुत्वा विप्रियं वचः ।
गतासुं पुत्रमादाय विललाप सुदुःखितः ॥९॥
9. lomaśa uvāca ,
bharadvājastu śūdrasya tacchrutvā vipriyaṁ vacaḥ ,
gatāsuṁ putramādāya vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ.
9. lomaśaḥ uvāca bharadvājaḥ tu śūdrasya tat śrutvā
vipriyaṃ vacaḥ gatāsuṃ putram ādāya vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ
9. Lomasha said: Bharadvaja, greatly distressed, upon hearing that unpleasant speech from the Śūdra, took his lifeless son and lamented.
ब्राह्मणानां किलार्थाय ननु त्वं तप्तवांस्तपः ।
द्विजानामनधीता वै वेदाः संप्रतिभान्त्विति ॥१०॥
10. brāhmaṇānāṁ kilārthāya nanu tvaṁ taptavāṁstapaḥ ,
dvijānāmanadhītā vai vedāḥ saṁpratibhāntviti.
10. brāhmaṇānāṃ kila arthāya nanu tvaṃ taptavān tapaḥ
dvijānām anadhītā vai vedāḥ saṃpratibhāntu iti
10. Lomasha said: Bharadvaja, greatly distressed, after hearing that unpleasant speech from the Śūdra and taking his lifeless son, lamented, 'Surely, for the sake of the Brahmins, you performed severe austerities (tapas) with the intention that the unstudied Vedas of the twice-born (dvijas) might indeed become clearly understood!'
तथा कल्याणशीलस्त्वं ब्राह्मणेषु महात्मसु ।
अनागाः सर्वभूतेषु कर्कशत्वमुपेयिवान् ॥११॥
11. tathā kalyāṇaśīlastvaṁ brāhmaṇeṣu mahātmasu ,
anāgāḥ sarvabhūteṣu karkaśatvamupeyivān.
11. tathā kalyāṇaśīlaḥ tvam brāhmaṇeṣu mahātmasu
anāgāḥ sarvabhūteṣu karkaśatvam upeyivān
11. How is it that you, who are of such a benevolent nature and faultless towards all beings, including great-souled Brahmins, have come to adopt harshness?
प्रतिषिद्धो मया तात रैभ्यावसथदर्शनात् ।
गतवानेव तं क्षुद्रं कालान्तकयमोपमम् ॥१२॥
12. pratiṣiddho mayā tāta raibhyāvasathadarśanāt ,
gatavāneva taṁ kṣudraṁ kālāntakayamopamam.
12. pratiṣiddhaḥ mayā tāta raibhyāvasathadarśanāt
gatavān eva tam kṣudram kālāntakayamopamam
12. Though you were prevented by me, dear son, from visiting Raibhya's hermitage, you nonetheless went to that vile man who is like Yama, the ultimate destroyer.
यः स जानन्महातेजा वृद्धस्यैकं ममात्मजम् ।
गतवानेव कोपस्य वशं परमदुर्मतिः ॥१३॥
13. yaḥ sa jānanmahātejā vṛddhasyaikaṁ mamātmajam ,
gatavāneva kopasya vaśaṁ paramadurmatiḥ.
13. yaḥ saḥ jānan mahātejāḥ vṛddhasya ekam mama
ātmajam gatavān eva kopasya vaśam paramadurmatiḥ
13. That greatly powerful person, despite knowing that he was my only son (ātmajam), the son of an old man, certainly succumbed to the sway of anger, being exceedingly evil-minded.
पुत्रशोकमनुप्राप्य एष रैभ्यस्य कर्मणा ।
त्यक्ष्यामि त्वामृते पुत्र प्राणानिष्टतमान्भुवि ॥१४॥
14. putraśokamanuprāpya eṣa raibhyasya karmaṇā ,
tyakṣyāmi tvāmṛte putra prāṇāniṣṭatamānbhuvi.
14. putraśokam anuprāpya eṣaḥ raibhyasya karmaṇā
tyakṣyāmi tvām ṛte putra prāṇān iṣṭatamān bhuvi
14. Having experienced this grief for my son, brought about by Raibhya's action (karma), I shall abandon my dearest lives on earth, without you, my son.
यथाहं पुत्रशोकेन देहं त्यक्ष्यामि किल्बिषी ।
तथा ज्येष्ठः सुतो रैभ्यं हिंस्याच्छीघ्रमनागसम् ॥१५॥
15. yathāhaṁ putraśokena dehaṁ tyakṣyāmi kilbiṣī ,
tathā jyeṣṭhaḥ suto raibhyaṁ hiṁsyācchīghramanāgasam.
15. yathā aham putraśokena deham tyakṣyāmi kilbiṣī tathā
jyeṣṭhaḥ sutaḥ raibhyam hiṃsyāt śīghram anāgasam
15. Just as I, a sinner, will give up my body due to the sorrow over my son, so may my eldest son quickly harm the innocent Raibhya.
सुखिनो वै नरा येषां जात्या पुत्रो न विद्यते ।
ते पुत्रशोकमप्राप्य विचरन्ति यथासुखम् ॥१६॥
16. sukhino vai narā yeṣāṁ jātyā putro na vidyate ,
te putraśokamaprāpya vicaranti yathāsukham.
16. sukhinaḥ vai narāḥ yeṣām jātyā putraḥ na vidyate
te putraśokam aprāpya vicaranti yathāsukham
16. Indeed, happy are those men who have no son by birth. Not experiencing the grief over a son, they wander about as they wish.
ये तु पुत्रकृताच्छोकाद्भृशं व्याकुलचेतसः ।
शपन्तीष्टान्सखीनार्तास्तेभ्यः पापतरो नु कः ॥१७॥
17. ye tu putrakṛtācchokādbhṛśaṁ vyākulacetasaḥ ,
śapantīṣṭānsakhīnārtāstebhyaḥ pāpataro nu kaḥ.
17. ye tu putrakṛtāt śokāt bhṛśam vyākulacetasaḥ
śapanti iṣṭān sakhīn ārtāḥ tebhyaḥ pāpataraḥ nu kaḥ
17. But as for those whose minds are greatly agitated by the sorrow caused by a son, and who, distressed, curse their dear friends - who, indeed, is more sinful than they?
परासुश्च सुतो दृष्टः शप्तश्चेष्टः सखा मया ।
ईदृशीमापदं को नु द्वितीयोऽनुभविष्यति ॥१८॥
18. parāsuśca suto dṛṣṭaḥ śaptaśceṣṭaḥ sakhā mayā ,
īdṛśīmāpadaṁ ko nu dvitīyo'nubhaviṣyati.
18. parāsuḥ ca sutaḥ dṛṣṭaḥ śaptaḥ ca iṣṭaḥ sakhā
mayā īdṛśīm āpadam kaḥ nu dvitīyaḥ anubhavisyati
18. My son has been seen dead, and my dear friend has been cursed by me. Who else (lit. 'a second') will ever experience such a calamity?
विलप्यैवं बहुविधं भरद्वाजोऽदहत्सुतम् ।
सुसमिद्धं ततः पश्चात्प्रविवेश हुताशनम् ॥१९॥
19. vilapyaivaṁ bahuvidhaṁ bharadvājo'dahatsutam ,
susamiddhaṁ tataḥ paścātpraviveśa hutāśanam.
19. vilapya evam bahuvidham bharadvajaḥ adahat sutam
susamiddham tataḥ paścāt praviveśa hutāśanam
19. Bharadvaja, having lamented thus in many ways, cremated his son. Thereafter, he entered the well-blazing fire.
