कर्ण उवाच ।
भगवन्तमहं भक्तो यथा मां वेत्थ गोपते ।
तथा परमतिग्मांशो नान्यं देवं कथंचन ॥१॥
1. karṇa uvāca ,
bhagavantamahaṁ bhakto yathā māṁ vettha gopate ,
tathā paramatigmāṁśo nānyaṁ devaṁ kathaṁcana.
1. karṇa uvāca bhagavantam aham bhaktaḥ yathā mām vettha
gopate tathā paramatigmāṃśo na anyam devam kathaṃcana
1. Karna said: O venerable one (bhagavan), I am devoted (bhakta) to you, just as you know me, O lord (gopati). Likewise, O supremely radiant one (paramatigmāṃśu), I am certainly not devoted to any other deity.
न मे दारा न मे पुत्रा न चात्मा सुहृदो न च ।
तथेष्टा वै सदा भक्त्या यथा त्वं गोपते मम ॥२॥
2. na me dārā na me putrā na cātmā suhṛdo na ca ,
tatheṣṭā vai sadā bhaktyā yathā tvaṁ gopate mama.
2. na me dārāḥ na me putrāḥ na ca ātmā suhṛdaḥ na ca |
tathā iṣṭāḥ vai sadā bhaktyā yathā tvam gopate mama
2. Neither my wives nor my sons, nor even my own self (ātman) or my friends, are as dear to me, with constant devotion (bhakti), as you are, O Lord of cows.
इष्टानां च महात्मानो भक्तानां च न संशयः ।
कुर्वन्ति भक्तिमिष्टां च जानीषे त्वं च भास्कर ॥३॥
3. iṣṭānāṁ ca mahātmāno bhaktānāṁ ca na saṁśayaḥ ,
kurvanti bhaktimiṣṭāṁ ca jānīṣe tvaṁ ca bhāskara.
3. iṣṭānām ca mahātmānaḥ bhaktānām ca na saṃśayaḥ |
kurvanti bhaktim iṣṭām ca jānīṣe tvam ca bhāskara
3. And without a doubt, great souls and devotees perform their cherished acts of devotion (bhakti). You know this, O Sun God (bhāskara).
इष्टो भक्तश्च मे कर्णो न चान्यद्दैवतं दिवि ।
जानीत इति वै कृत्वा भगवानाह मद्धितम् ॥४॥
4. iṣṭo bhaktaśca me karṇo na cānyaddaivataṁ divi ,
jānīta iti vai kṛtvā bhagavānāha maddhitam.
4. iṣṭaḥ bhaktaḥ ca me karṇaḥ na ca anyat daivatam
divi | jānīta iti vai kṛtvā bhagavān āha mat hitam
4. Karṇa is dear and devoted to me; indeed, there is no other deity (daivata) in heaven (divi) like him. Knowing this, the Lord (bhagavān) spoke words beneficial for me.
भूयश्च शिरसा याचे प्रसाद्य च पुनः पुनः ।
इति ब्रवीमि तिग्मांशो त्वं तु मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥५॥
5. bhūyaśca śirasā yāce prasādya ca punaḥ punaḥ ,
iti bravīmi tigmāṁśo tvaṁ tu me kṣantumarhasi.
5. bhūyaḥ ca śirasā yāce prasādya ca punaḥ punaḥ |
iti bravīmi tigmāṃśo tvam tu me kṣantum arhasi
5. Furthermore, I entreat with my head, and having appeased you again and again, I say this, O hot-rayed one (tigmāṃśa): you, however, ought to forgive me.
बिभेमि न तथा मृत्योर्यथा बिभ्येऽनृतादहम् ।
विशेषेण द्विजातीनां सर्वेषां सर्वदा सताम् ।
प्रदाने जीवितस्यापि न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥६॥
6. bibhemi na tathā mṛtyoryathā bibhye'nṛtādaham ,
viśeṣeṇa dvijātīnāṁ sarveṣāṁ sarvadā satām ,
pradāne jīvitasyāpi na me'trāsti vicāraṇā.
6. bibhemi na tathā mṛtyoḥ yathā bibhye
anṛtāt aham viśeṣeṇa dvijātīnām
sarveṣām sarvadā satām pradāne
jīvitasya api na me atra asti vicāraṇā
6. I do not fear death as much as I fear untruth (anṛta). Especially for all righteous brahmins (dvijāti), I have no hesitation (vicāraṇā) in offering even my own life.
यच्च मामात्थ देव त्वं पाण्डवं फल्गुनं प्रति ।
व्येतु संतापजं दुःखं तव भास्कर मानसम् ।
अर्जुनं प्रति मां चैव विजेष्यामि रणेऽर्जुनम् ॥७॥
7. yacca māmāttha deva tvaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ phalgunaṁ prati ,
vyetu saṁtāpajaṁ duḥkhaṁ tava bhāskara mānasam ,
arjunaṁ prati māṁ caiva vijeṣyāmi raṇe'rjunam.
7. yat ca mām āttha deva tvam pāṇḍavam
phalgunam prati vyetu saṃtāpa-jam
duḥkham tava bhāskara mānasam arjunam
prati mām ca eva vijeṣyāmi raṇe arjunam
7. And what you, O divine one (deva), said to me regarding the Pāṇḍava Phalguna (Arjuna) – let the sorrow-born grief (duḥkha) from your mind (mānasam) depart, O Sun-god (Bhāskara)! I shall conquer Arjuna in battle (raṇa), and also conquer myself.
तवापि विदितं देव ममाप्यस्त्रबलं महत् ।
जामदग्न्यादुपात्तं यत्तथा द्रोणान्महात्मनः ॥८॥
8. tavāpi viditaṁ deva mamāpyastrabalaṁ mahat ,
jāmadagnyādupāttaṁ yattathā droṇānmahātmanaḥ.
8. tava api viditam deva mama api astra-balam mahat
jāmadagnyāt upāttam yat tathā droṇāt mahātmanaḥ
8. O divine one (deva), it is also known to you that my great strength in weaponry (astra-balam) – which was obtained from Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma) and likewise from the great-souled (mahātman) Droṇa – is also significant.
इदं त्वमनुजानीहि सुरश्रेष्ठ व्रतं मम ।
भिक्षते वज्रिणे दद्यामपि जीवितमात्मनः ॥९॥
9. idaṁ tvamanujānīhi suraśreṣṭha vrataṁ mama ,
bhikṣate vajriṇe dadyāmapi jīvitamātmanaḥ.
9. idam tvam anujānīhi sura-śreṣṭha vratam mama
bhikṣate vajriṇe dadyām api jīvitam ātmanaḥ
9. O best among gods (sura-śreṣṭha), know this to be my vow (vrata): I would give even my own life (ātman) to Indra (Vajrin) if he were to beg for it.
सूर्य उवाच ।
यदि तात ददास्येते वज्रिणे कुण्डले शुभे ।
त्वमप्येनमथो ब्रूया विजयार्थं महाबल ॥१०॥
10. sūrya uvāca ,
yadi tāta dadāsyete vajriṇe kuṇḍale śubhe ,
tvamapyenamatho brūyā vijayārthaṁ mahābala.
10. sūrya uvāca yadi tāta dadāsi ete vajriṇe kuṇḍale
śubhe tvam api enam atho brūyāḥ vijayārtham mahābala
10. Sūrya said: "O dear one, if you give these beautiful earrings to Vajrin (Indra), then you, O mighty one, should also tell him that it is for victory."
नियमेन प्रदद्यास्त्वं कुण्डले वै शतक्रतोः ।
अवध्यो ह्यसि भूतानां कुण्डलाभ्यां समन्वितः ॥११॥
11. niyamena pradadyāstvaṁ kuṇḍale vai śatakratoḥ ,
avadhyo hyasi bhūtānāṁ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ samanvitaḥ.
11. niyamena pradadyāḥ tvam kuṇḍale vai śatakratoḥ
avadhyaḥ hi asi bhūtānām kuṇḍalābhyām samanvitaḥ
11. tvam niyamena śatakratoḥ kuṇḍale vai pradadyāḥ
hi kuṇḍalābhyām samanvitaḥ bhūtānām avadhyaḥ asi
11. You must certainly give these two earrings to Śatakratu (Indra). Indeed, when you are endowed with these two earrings, you will be invulnerable to all beings.
अर्जुनेन विनाशं हि तव दानवसूदनः ।
प्रार्थयानो रणे वत्स कुण्डले ते जिहीर्षति ॥१२॥
12. arjunena vināśaṁ hi tava dānavasūdanaḥ ,
prārthayāno raṇe vatsa kuṇḍale te jihīrṣati.
12. arjunena vināśam hi tava dānavasūdanaḥ
prārthayānaḥ raṇe vatsa kuṇḍale te jihīrṣati
12. Indeed, O child (vatsa), the destroyer of Dānavas (Indra), wishing for your destruction by Arjuna, desires to take those earrings from you in battle.
स त्वमप्येनमाराध्य सूनृताभिः पुनः पुनः ।
अभ्यर्थयेथा देवेशममोघार्थं पुरंदरम् ॥१३॥
13. sa tvamapyenamārādhya sūnṛtābhiḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
abhyarthayethā deveśamamoghārthaṁ puraṁdaram.
13. sa tvam api enam ārādhya sūnṛtābhiḥ punaḥ punaḥ
abhyarthayethāḥ deveśam amoghārtham purandaram
13. Therefore, you also, having propitiated him (Indra) repeatedly with gentle words, should request the lord of gods (deveśam), Purandara, whose purpose is unfailing.
अमोघां देहि मे शक्तिममित्रविनिबर्हिणीम् ।
दास्यामि ते सहस्राक्ष कुण्डले वर्म चोत्तमम् ॥१४॥
14. amoghāṁ dehi me śaktimamitravinibarhiṇīm ,
dāsyāmi te sahasrākṣa kuṇḍale varma cottamam.
14. amoghām dehi me śaktim amitravinibarhiṇīm
dāsyāmi te sahasrākṣa kuṇḍale varma ca uttamam
14. Grant me an unfailing power (śakti) that annihilates enemies. In return, O thousand-eyed one (Indra), I will give you my two earrings and my excellent armor.
इत्येवं नियमेन त्वं दद्याः शक्राय कुण्डले ।
तया त्वं कर्ण संग्रामे हनिष्यसि रणे रिपून् ॥१५॥
15. ityevaṁ niyamena tvaṁ dadyāḥ śakrāya kuṇḍale ,
tayā tvaṁ karṇa saṁgrāme haniṣyasi raṇe ripūn.
15. iti evam niyamena tvam dadyāḥ śakrāya kuṇḍale
tayā tvam karṇa saṃgrāme haniṣyasi raṇe ripūn
15. Thus, you must surely give the two earrings to Śakra (Indra). By means of that (śakti), O Karna, you will slay your foes in battle.
नाहत्वा हि महाबाहो शत्रूनेति करं पुनः ।
सा शक्तिर्देवराजस्य शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१६॥
16. nāhatvā hi mahābāho śatrūneti karaṁ punaḥ ,
sā śaktirdevarājasya śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
16. na ahatvā hi mahābāho śatrūn eti karam punaḥ
sā śaktiḥ devarājasya śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
16. Indeed, O mighty-armed one, that power (śakti) of the king of gods (Indra) does not return to the hand without having slain enemies, be it by hundreds or thousands.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा सहस्रांशुः सहसान्तरधीयत ।
ततः सूर्याय जप्यान्ते कर्णः स्वप्नं न्यवेदयत् ॥१७॥
17. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā sahasrāṁśuḥ sahasāntaradhīyata ,
tataḥ sūryāya japyānte karṇaḥ svapnaṁ nyavedayat.
17. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam uktvā sahasrāṃśuḥ sahasā
antaradhīyata tataḥ sūryāya japyānte karṇaḥ svapnam nyavedayat
17. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, the thousand-rayed one (Sūrya) suddenly vanished. Then, after his daily prayers, Karna narrated his dream to Sūrya.
यथादृष्टं यथातत्त्वं यथोक्तमुभयोर्निशि ।
तत्सर्वमानुपूर्व्येण शशंसास्मै वृषस्तदा ॥१८॥
18. yathādṛṣṭaṁ yathātattvaṁ yathoktamubhayorniśi ,
tatsarvamānupūrvyeṇa śaśaṁsāsmai vṛṣastadā.
18. yathādṛṣṭam yathātattvam yathoktam ubhayoḥ niśi
tat sarvam ānupūrvyena śasaṃsa asmai vṛṣaḥ tadā
18. Then, Vṛṣa recounted to him in due order everything that had been seen, everything that was truly so (tattva), and everything that had been said by both of them during the night.
तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान्देवो भानुः स्वर्भानुसूदनः ।
उवाच तं तथेत्येव कर्णं सूर्यः स्मयन्निव ॥१९॥
19. tacchrutvā bhagavāndevo bhānuḥ svarbhānusūdanaḥ ,
uvāca taṁ tathetyeva karṇaṁ sūryaḥ smayanniva.
19. tat śrutvā bhagavān devaḥ bhānuḥ svarbhānusūdanaḥ
uvāca tam tathā iti eva karṇam sūryaḥ smayan iva
19. Having heard that, the revered god Bhānu (Sūrya), the slayer of Svabhānu (Rāhu), then spoke to Karṇa, saying, 'So be it,' as if smiling.
ततस्तत्त्वमिति ज्ञात्वा राधेयः परवीरहा ।
शक्तिमेवाभिकाङ्क्षन्वै वासवं प्रत्यपालयत् ॥२०॥
20. tatastattvamiti jñātvā rādheyaḥ paravīrahā ,
śaktimevābhikāṅkṣanvai vāsavaṁ pratyapālayat.
20. tataḥ tattvam iti jñātvā rādheyaḥ paravīrahā
śaktim eva abhikāṅkṣan vai vāsavam prati apālayat
20. Then, having understood this truth (tattva), Rādhā's son (Karṇa), the slayer of enemy heroes, desiring only the divine power (śakti), indeed awaited Indra.
