The city had gates and watchtowers, four entrances, and was impregnable. It was entirely made of divine jewels, presenting a wonderfully beautiful sight. It was surrounded by trees laden with flowers and fruits, and by divine, jeweled trees.

Mātali said: 'Pulomā, a daughter of the Daityas, and Kālakā, a great female demon (asurī), performed supreme asceticism (tapas) for a divine thousand years. Then, at the culmination of their asceticism (tapas), the Self-existent Lord (Svayambhū) granted them a boon.'

O king of kings, these beings, who are always joyful, free from anxiety, and devoid of longing, reside here, invulnerable to all deities. However, their death was formerly decreed by Brahmā to be brought about by humans.

tvayā vimathitam vīra svavīryāstratapobalāt
54.
O hero, this great city 'Khaga', which was indeed indestructible by gods and demons, was utterly destroyed by you through the power of your own valor, weapons, and spiritual austerity (tapas).

55.
Then, with that city destroyed and the demons slain, all the women, wailing loudly, rushed out from the city.

56.
With disheveled hair, distressed and sorrowful like ospreys, they fell to the ground lamenting their sons, fathers, and brothers.

57.
Weeping, those with pathetic voices, wailing loudly, having lost their lords, they struck their chests with their hands, their garlands and ornaments having fallen.

58.
That city of the Dānavas, filled with sorrow and devoid of prosperity, afflicted with misery and wretchedness, no longer shone, its splendor destroyed and its lord slain.

59.
The city became invisible, like a mirage, like a lake from which its great serpent (nāga) has been removed, or like a forest whose trees are dry.

60.
Matali quickly brought me, with a delighted mind, directly from the battle after I had accomplished my task, to the abode of the king of the gods.

61.
After attacking Hiranyapura and slaying the great Asuras, and also the Nivātakavacas, I then approached Śakra.

62.
O greatly resplendent one, Matali then reported all of my actions (karma) to Devendra (Indra) in detail, just as they had occurred.

63.
(Matali reported) the destruction of Hiranyapura, the neutralization of their magical powers (māyā), and the slaying in battle of the immensely powerful Nivātakavacas.

64.
Having heard that, the glorious, thousand-eyed Purandara (Indra), accompanied by the Maruts, was pleased. He then exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
ततो मां देवराजो वै समाश्वास्य पुनः पुनः ।

65.
Then, the king of the gods (devarāja), Indra, after repeatedly comforting me, spoke these very sweet words in the company of the enlightened ones (vibudha).
66. atidevāsuraṁ karma kṛtametattvayā raṇe ,

66.

arthaḥ ca mahān pārtha kṛtaḥ śatrūn ghnatā mama
arthaḥ ca mahān pārtha kṛtaḥ śatrūn ghnatā mama
66.
This deed (karma), surpassing even that of the gods and asuras, has been accomplished by you in battle. And, O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), a great objective has been achieved for me by your slaying of my enemies.

asaṃmūḍhena ca astrāṇām kartavyam pratipādanam
67.
Indeed, O Dhanañjaya, one should always remain resolute in battle. And by one who is undeluded, the proper deployment of weapons must always be performed.

68.
Indeed, you are irresistible in battle, even by gods, dānavas, and rākṣasas, as well as by yakṣas, asuras, gandharvas, and even by hosts of birds and nāgas.

69.
And, O son of Kunti, the virtuous Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, whose soul is dedicated to natural law (dharma), will protect the earth, which has been conquered by the might of your arms.
