वैशंपायन उवाच ।
राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मार्थसहितं हितम् ।
कृष्णा दाशार्हमासीनमब्रवीच्छोककर्षिता ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
rājñastu vacanaṁ śrutvā dharmārthasahitaṁ hitam ,
kṛṣṇā dāśārhamāsīnamabravīcchokakarṣitā.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: After hearing the king's beneficial words, which were aligned with natural law (dharma) and prosperity, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), overwhelmed by grief, spoke to Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa) as he sat there.
सुता द्रुपदराजस्य स्वसितायतमूर्धजा ।
संपूज्य सहदेवं च सात्यकिं च महारथम् ॥२॥
2. sutā drupadarājasya svasitāyatamūrdhajā ,
saṁpūjya sahadevaṁ ca sātyakiṁ ca mahāratham.

2. The daughter of King Drupada, whose hair was very white and long, having paid respect to Sahadeva and Sātyaki, the great chariot-warrior.
भीमसेनं च संशान्तं दृष्ट्वा परमदुर्मनाः ।
अश्रुपूर्णेक्षणा वाक्यमुवाचेदं मनस्विनी ॥३॥
3. bhīmasenaṁ ca saṁśāntaṁ dṛṣṭvā paramadurmanāḥ ,
aśrupūrṇekṣaṇā vākyamuvācedaṁ manasvinī.
3. bhīmasenam ca saṃśāntam dṛṣṭvā paramadurmanāḥ
aśrupūrṇekṣaṇā vākyam uvāca idam manasvinī
3. Having seen Bhīmasena, who was composed, she, greatly distressed in mind and with eyes full of tears, the spirited woman, spoke these words.
विदितं ते महाबाहो धर्मज्ञ मधुसूदन ।
यथा निकृतिमास्थाय भ्रंशिताः पाण्डवाः सुखात् ॥४॥
4. viditaṁ te mahābāho dharmajña madhusūdana ,
yathā nikṛtimāsthāya bhraṁśitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sukhāt.
4. viditam te mahābāho dharmajña madhusūdana yathā
nikṛtim āsthāya bhraṃśitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sukhāt
4. O mighty-armed one, O knower of natural law (dharma), O Madhusūdana, it is well known to you how the Pāṇḍavas were deprived of their happiness by resorting to deceit.
धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रेण सामात्येन जनार्दन ।
यथा च संजयो राज्ञा मन्त्रं रहसि श्रावितः ॥५॥
5. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putreṇa sāmātyena janārdana ,
yathā ca saṁjayo rājñā mantraṁ rahasi śrāvitaḥ.

5. O Janardana (Viṣṇu), how Sanjaya was informed of the secret counsel by King Dhritarashtra, along with his son (Duryodhana) and his ministers...
युधिष्ठिरेण दाशार्ह तच्चापि विदितं तव ।
यथोक्तः संजयश्चैव तच्च सर्वं श्रुतं त्वया ॥६॥
6. yudhiṣṭhireṇa dāśārha taccāpi viditaṁ tava ,
yathoktaḥ saṁjayaścaiva tacca sarvaṁ śrutaṁ tvayā.
6. yudhiṣṭhireṇa dāśārha tat ca api viditam tava yathā
uktaḥ sañjayaḥ ca eva tat ca sarvam śrutam tvayā
6. O descendant of Dāśārha (Krishna), that (counsel) is also known to you through Yudhiṣṭhira. And indeed, everything that Sanjaya said, all that was heard by you.
पञ्च नस्तात दीयन्तां ग्रामा इति महाद्युते ।
कुशस्थलं वृकस्थलमासन्दी वारणावतम् ॥७॥
7. pañca nastāta dīyantāṁ grāmā iti mahādyute ,
kuśasthalaṁ vṛkasthalamāsandī vāraṇāvatam.
7. pañca naḥ tāta dīyantām grāmāḥ iti mahādyute
kuśasthalam vṛkasthalam āsandī vāraṇāvatam
7. O dear one, O greatly radiant one, let five villages be given to us, namely Kuśasthala, Vṛkasthala, Āsandī, and Vāraṇāvata.
अवसानं महाबाहो किंचिदेव तु पञ्चमम् ।
इति दुर्योधनो वाच्यः सुहृदश्चास्य केशव ॥८॥
8. avasānaṁ mahābāho kiṁcideva tu pañcamam ,
iti duryodhano vācyaḥ suhṛdaścāsya keśava.
8. avasānam mahābāho kiñcit eva tu pañcamam iti
duryodhanaḥ vācyaḥ suhṛdaḥ ca asya keśava
8. O mighty-armed one (Krishna), some dwelling place (should be given as) the fifth. O Keśava (Krishna), thus, Duryodhana and his friends should be told this.
तच्चापि नाकरोद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा कृष्ण सुयोधनः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य दाशार्ह ह्रीमतः संधिमिच्छतः ॥९॥
9. taccāpi nākarodvākyaṁ śrutvā kṛṣṇa suyodhanaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya dāśārha hrīmataḥ saṁdhimicchataḥ.
9. tat ca api na akarot vākyam śrutvā kṛṣṇa suyodhanaḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya dāśārha hrīmataḥ sandhim icchataḥ
9. O Kṛṣṇa, O Dāśārha, even after hearing that statement from the modest Yudhiṣṭhira, who desired peace, Suyodhana did not comply with it.
अप्रदानेन राज्यस्य यदि कृष्ण सुयोधनः ।
संधिमिच्छेन्न कर्तव्यस्तत्र गत्वा कथंचन ॥१०॥
10. apradānena rājyasya yadi kṛṣṇa suyodhanaḥ ,
saṁdhimicchenna kartavyastatra gatvā kathaṁcana.
10. apradānena rājyasya yadi kṛṣṇa suyodhanaḥ sandhim
icchet na kartavyaḥ tatra gatvā kathaṃcana
10. O Kṛṣṇa, if Suyodhana should desire peace without giving up (even a portion of) the kingdom, then such a peace should never be made, even by going to him.
शक्ष्यन्ति हि महाबाहो पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयैः सह ।
धार्तराष्ट्रबलं घोरं क्रुद्धं प्रतिसमासितुम् ॥११॥
11. śakṣyanti hi mahābāho pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha ,
dhārtarāṣṭrabalaṁ ghoraṁ kruddhaṁ pratisamāsitum.
11. śakṣyanti hi mahābāho pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha
dhārtarāṣṭrabalam ghoram kruddham pratisamāsitum
11. Indeed, O mighty-armed one, the Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by the Sṛñjayas, will certainly be able to confront the formidable and enraged army of the Dhṛtarāṣṭras.
न हि साम्ना न दानेन शक्योऽर्थस्तेषु कश्चन ।
तस्मात्तेषु न कर्तव्या कृपा ते मधुसूदन ॥१२॥
12. na hi sāmnā na dānena śakyo'rthasteṣu kaścana ,
tasmātteṣu na kartavyā kṛpā te madhusūdana.
12. na hi sāmnā na dānena śakyaḥ arthaḥ teṣu kaścana
tasmāt teṣu na kartavyā kṛpā te madhusūdana
12. Indeed, no objective can be achieved with them through conciliation or through gifts. Therefore, O Madhusūdana, you should not show any compassion (kṛpā) towards them.
साम्ना दानेन वा कृष्ण ये न शाम्यन्ति शत्रवः ।
मोक्तव्यस्तेषु दण्डः स्याज्जीवितं परिरक्षता ॥१३॥
13. sāmnā dānena vā kṛṣṇa ye na śāmyanti śatravaḥ ,
moktavyasteṣu daṇḍaḥ syājjīvitaṁ parirakṣatā.
13. sāmnā dānena vā kṛṣṇa ye na śāmyanti śatravaḥ
moktavyaḥ teṣu daṇḍaḥ syāt jīvitaṃ parirakṣatā
13. O Krishna, those enemies who are not appeased by conciliation or by gifts, punishment must be inflicted upon them by one who protects life.
तस्मात्तेषु महादण्डः क्षेप्तव्यः क्षिप्रमच्युत ।
त्वया चैव महाबाहो पाण्डवैः सह सृञ्जयैः ॥१४॥
14. tasmātteṣu mahādaṇḍaḥ kṣeptavyaḥ kṣipramacyuta ,
tvayā caiva mahābāho pāṇḍavaiḥ saha sṛñjayaiḥ.
14. tasmāt teṣu mahādaṇḍaḥ kṣeptavyaḥ kṣipram acyuta
tvayā ca eva mahābāho pāṇḍavaiḥ saha sṛñjayaiḥ
14. Therefore, O Acyuta, a great punishment must be quickly applied to them by you, O mighty-armed one, along with the Pāṇḍavas and the Sṛñjayas.
एतत्समर्थं पार्थानां तव चैव यशस्करम् ।
क्रियमाणं भवेत्कृष्ण क्षत्रस्य च सुखावहम् ॥१५॥
15. etatsamarthaṁ pārthānāṁ tava caiva yaśaskaram ,
kriyamāṇaṁ bhavetkṛṣṇa kṣatrasya ca sukhāvaham.
15. etat samarthaṃ pārthānāṃ tava ca eva yaśaskaram
kriyamāṇaṃ bhavet kṛṣṇa kṣatrasya ca sukhāvaham
15. O Krishna, if this is done, it would be suitable for the Pārthas, glorious for you, and beneficial for the warrior (kṣatra) class.
क्षत्रियेण हि हन्तव्यः क्षत्रियो लोभमास्थितः ।
अक्षत्रियो वा दाशार्ह स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठता ॥१६॥
16. kṣatriyeṇa hi hantavyaḥ kṣatriyo lobhamāsthitaḥ ,
akṣatriyo vā dāśārha svadharmamanutiṣṭhatā.
16. kṣatriyeṇa hi hantavyaḥ kṣatriyaḥ lobham āsthitaḥ
akṣatriyaḥ vā dāśārha svadharmam anutiṣṭhatā
16. Indeed, O Dāśārha, a kṣatriya who has resorted to greed should be killed by a kṣatriya, or even by a non-kṣatriya, provided that one is observing his own duty (svadharma).
अन्यत्र ब्राह्मणात्तात सर्वपापेष्ववस्थितात् ।
गुरुर्हि सर्ववर्णानां ब्राह्मणः प्रसृताग्रभुक् ॥१७॥
17. anyatra brāhmaṇāttāta sarvapāpeṣvavasthitāt ,
gururhi sarvavarṇānāṁ brāhmaṇaḥ prasṛtāgrabhuk.
17. anyatra brāhmaṇāt tāta sarvapāpeṣu avasthitāt
guruḥ hi sarvavarṇānām brāhmaṇaḥ prasṛtāgrabuk
17. My dear, a brahmin is indeed the preceptor (guru) for all social classes (varṇas) and is entitled to the first share of offerings, unless that brahmin is immersed in all kinds of sins.
यथावध्ये भवेद्दोषो वध्यमाने जनार्दन ।
स वध्यस्यावधे दृष्ट इति धर्मविदो विदुः ॥१८॥
18. yathāvadhye bhaveddoṣo vadhyamāne janārdana ,
sa vadhyasyāvadhe dṛṣṭa iti dharmavido viduḥ.
18. yathā avadhye bhavet doṣaḥ vadhyamāne janārdana
saḥ vadhyasya avadhe dṛṣṭaḥ iti dharmavidaḥ viduḥ
18. O Janardana, just as a fault (doṣa) would arise from killing one who is inviolable, a similar fault is also observed from not killing one who deserves to be killed. This is what those who understand natural law (dharma) know.
यथा त्वां न स्पृशेदेष दोषः कृष्ण तथा कुरु ।
पाण्डवैः सह दाशार्ह सृञ्जयैश्च ससैनिकैः ॥१९॥
19. yathā tvāṁ na spṛśedeṣa doṣaḥ kṛṣṇa tathā kuru ,
pāṇḍavaiḥ saha dāśārha sṛñjayaiśca sasainikaiḥ.
19. yathā tvām na spṛśet eṣa doṣaḥ kṛṣṇa tathā kuru
pāṇḍavaiḥ saha dāśārha sṛñjayaiḥ ca sasainikaiḥ
19. O Krishna, O descendant of Dasharha, please act in such a way that this fault (doṣa) does not affect you, the Pandavas, the Srinjayas, or their respective armies.
पुनरुक्तं च वक्ष्यामि विश्रम्भेण जनार्दन ।
का नु सीमन्तिनी मादृक्पृथिव्यामस्ति केशव ॥२०॥
20. punaruktaṁ ca vakṣyāmi viśrambheṇa janārdana ,
kā nu sīmantinī mādṛkpṛthivyāmasti keśava.
20. punaruktam ca vakṣyāmi viśrambheṇa janārdana
kā nu sīmantinī mādṛk pṛthivyām asti keśava
20. And I will speak again with confidence, O Janardana: Who indeed is there on this earth, O Keshava, a woman like me?
सुता द्रुपदराजस्य वेदिमध्यात्समुत्थिता ।
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भगिनी तव कृष्ण प्रिया सखी ॥२१॥
21. sutā drupadarājasya vedimadhyātsamutthitā ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhaginī tava kṛṣṇa priyā sakhī.
21. sutā drupadarājasya vedimadhyāt samutthitā
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhaginī tava kṛṣṇa priyā sakhī
21. O Kṛṣṇa, she is the daughter of King Drupada, who arose from the midst of the sacrificial altar, the sister of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and your dear friend.
आजमीढकुलं प्राप्ता स्नुषा पाण्डोर्महात्मनः ।
महिषी पाण्डुपुत्राणां पञ्चेन्द्रसमवर्चसाम् ॥२२॥
22. ājamīḍhakulaṁ prāptā snuṣā pāṇḍormahātmanaḥ ,
mahiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ pañcendrasamavarcasām.
22. ājamīḍhakulam prāptā snuṣā pāṇḍoḥ mahātmanaḥ
mahiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇām pañcaindrasamavarcasām
22. Having joined the lineage of Ājamīḍha, she became the daughter-in-law of the great-souled Pāṇḍu, and the chief queen of Pāṇḍu's five sons, whose splendor was equal to that of five Indras.
सुता मे पञ्चभिर्वीरैः पञ्च जाता महारथाः ।
अभिमन्युर्यथा कृष्ण तथा ते तव धर्मतः ॥२३॥
23. sutā me pañcabhirvīraiḥ pañca jātā mahārathāḥ ,
abhimanyuryathā kṛṣṇa tathā te tava dharmataḥ.
23. sutā me pañcabhiḥ vīraiḥ pañca jātāḥ mahārathāḥ
abhimanyuḥ yathā kṛṣṇa tathā te tava dharmataḥ
23. My daughter (Draupadī) bore five great warrior (mahāratha) sons through the five heroes (Pāṇḍavas). Just as Abhimanyu is related to you, O Kṛṣṇa, so too are they (Draupadī's sons) connected to you by your intrinsic nature (dharma) and duty.
साहं केशग्रहं प्राप्ता परिक्लिष्टा सभां गता ।
पश्यतां पाण्डुपुत्राणां त्वयि जीवति केशव ॥२४॥
24. sāhaṁ keśagrahaṁ prāptā parikliṣṭā sabhāṁ gatā ,
paśyatāṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ tvayi jīvati keśava.
24. sā aham keśagraham prāptā parikliṣṭā sabhām
gatā paśyatām pāṇḍuputrāṇām tvayi jīvati keśava
24. I, being such a person, was subjected to the seizure of my hair, severely tormented, and dragged into the assembly. All this happened while the sons of Pāṇḍu were watching, and while you, Keśava, were alive.
जीवत्सु कौरवेयेषु पाञ्चालेष्वथ वृष्णिषु ।
दासीभूतास्मि पापानां सभामध्ये व्यवस्थिता ॥२५॥
25. jīvatsu kauraveyeṣu pāñcāleṣvatha vṛṣṇiṣu ,
dāsībhūtāsmi pāpānāṁ sabhāmadhye vyavasthitā.
25. jīvatsu kauraveyeṣu pāñcāleṣu atha vṛṣṇiṣu
dāsībhūtā asmi pāpānām sabhāmadhye vyavasthitā
25. While the Kauravas, Pañcālas, and Vṛṣṇis are alive, I, having become a slave, am standing in the midst of the assembly of these sinners.
निरामर्षेष्वचेष्टेषु प्रेक्षमाणेषु पाण्डुषु ।
त्राहि मामिति गोविन्द मनसा काङ्क्षितोऽसि मे ॥२६॥
26. nirāmarṣeṣvaceṣṭeṣu prekṣamāṇeṣu pāṇḍuṣu ,
trāhi māmiti govinda manasā kāṅkṣito'si me.
26. nirāmarṣeṣu aceṣṭeṣu prekṣamāṇeṣu pāṇḍuṣu
trāhi mām iti govinda manasā kāṅkṣitaḥ asi me
26. While the Pāṇḍavas were showing no resentment, were inactive, and merely watching, I cried out, 'Protect me!' Thus, O Govinda, you were desired by me in my mind.
यत्र मां भगवान्राजा श्वशुरो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
वरं वृणीष्व पाञ्चालि वरार्हासि मतासि मे ॥२७॥
27. yatra māṁ bhagavānrājā śvaśuro vākyamabravīt ,
varaṁ vṛṇīṣva pāñcāli varārhāsi matāsi me.
27. yatra mām bhagavān rājā śvaśuraḥ vākyam abravīt
varam vṛṇīṣva pāñcāli vara arhā asi matā asi me
27. There, the venerable king, my father-in-law, said this to me: 'O Pāñcālī, choose a boon! You are considered by me to be worthy of a boon.'
अदासाः पाण्डवाः सन्तु सरथाः सायुधा इति ।
मयोक्ते यत्र निर्मुक्ता वनवासाय केशव ॥२८॥
28. adāsāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ santu sarathāḥ sāyudhā iti ,
mayokte yatra nirmuktā vanavāsāya keśava.
28. adāsāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ santu sarathāḥ sāyudhāḥ iti
mayā ukte yatra nirmuktāḥ vanavāsāya keśava
28. When it was declared by me, 'May the Pāṇḍavas be non-slaves (free), with chariots, and with weapons!', then, O Keśava, they were freed for forest exile.
एवंविधानां दुःखानामभिज्ञोऽसि जनार्दन ।
त्राहि मां पुण्डरीकाक्ष सभर्तृज्ञातिबान्धवाम् ॥२९॥
29. evaṁvidhānāṁ duḥkhānāmabhijño'si janārdana ,
trāhi māṁ puṇḍarīkākṣa sabhartṛjñātibāndhavām.
29. evaṃvidhānām duḥkhānām abhijñaḥ asi janārdana
trāhi mām puṇḍarīkākṣa sabhartṛjñātibāndhavām
29. O Janardana, you are aware of such sufferings (duḥkha). O Pundarikaksha, protect me along with my husband, relatives, and kinsmen.
नन्वहं कृष्ण भीष्मस्य धृतराष्ट्रस्य चोभयोः ।
स्नुषा भवामि धर्मेण साहं दासीकृताभवम् ॥३०॥
30. nanvahaṁ kṛṣṇa bhīṣmasya dhṛtarāṣṭrasya cobhayoḥ ,
snuṣā bhavāmi dharmeṇa sāhaṁ dāsīkṛtābhavam.
30. nanu aham kṛṣṇa bhīṣmasya dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca ubhayoḥ
snuṣā bhavāmi dharmeṇa sā aham dāsīkṛtā abhavam
30. O Krishna, am I not indeed the daughter-in-law of both Bhishma and Dhritarashtra by natural law (dharma)? Yet, I have been made a slave.
धिग्बलं भीमसेनस्य धिक्पार्थस्य धनुष्मताम् ।
यत्र दुर्योधनः कृष्ण मुहूर्तमपि जीवति ॥३१॥
31. dhigbalaṁ bhīmasenasya dhikpārthasya dhanuṣmatām ,
yatra duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇa muhūrtamapi jīvati.
31. dhik balam bhīmasenasya dhik pārthasya dhanuṣmatām
yatra duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇa muhūrtam api jīvati
31. Shame on the strength of Bhimasena! Shame on Partha, the wielder of bows! O Krishna, if Duryodhana lives even for a moment (muhūrta)!
यदि तेऽहमनुग्राह्या यदि तेऽस्ति कृपा मयि ।
धार्तराष्ट्रेषु वै कोपः सर्वः कृष्ण विधीयताम् ॥३२॥
32. yadi te'hamanugrāhyā yadi te'sti kṛpā mayi ,
dhārtarāṣṭreṣu vai kopaḥ sarvaḥ kṛṣṇa vidhīyatām.
32. yadi te aham anugrāhyā yadi te asti kṛpā mayi
dhārtarāṣṭreṣu vai kopaḥ sarvaḥ kṛṣṇa vidhīyatām
32. If I am to be favored by you, if you have compassion for me, then all your anger, O Krishna, should indeed be directed towards the sons of Dhritarashtra.
इत्युक्त्वा मृदुसंहारं वृजिनाग्रं सुदर्शनम् ।
सुनीलमसितापाङ्गी पुण्यगन्धाधिवासितम् ॥३३॥
33. ityuktvā mṛdusaṁhāraṁ vṛjināgraṁ sudarśanam ,
sunīlamasitāpāṅgī puṇyagandhādhivāsitam.
33. iti uktvā mṛdusaṃhāram vṛjināgram sudarśanam
sunīlam asitāpāṅgī puṇyagandhādhivāsitam
33. Having said this, (she considered) the softly gathered, wavy-tipped, beautiful, very dark, and auspiciously fragrant (lock of hair).
सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नं महाभुजगवर्चसम् ।
केशपक्षं वरारोहा गृह्य सव्येन पाणिना ॥३४॥
34. sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpannaṁ mahābhujagavarcasam ,
keśapakṣaṁ varārohā gṛhya savyena pāṇinā.
34. sarvalakṣaṇasampannam mahābhujagavarcasam
keśapakṣam varārohā gṛhya savyena pāṇinā
34. The woman with black-cornered eyes (asitāpāṅgī) and beautiful hips (varārohā), having taken that lock of hair (keśapakṣa) – which was endowed with all auspicious marks and possessed the luster of a great serpent – with her left hand...
पद्माक्षी पुण्डरीकाक्षमुपेत्य गजगामिनी ।
अश्रुपूर्णेक्षणा कृष्णा कृष्णं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३५॥
35. padmākṣī puṇḍarīkākṣamupetya gajagāminī ,
aśrupūrṇekṣaṇā kṛṣṇā kṛṣṇaṁ vacanamabravīt.
35. padmākṣī puṇḍarīkākṣam upetya gajagāminī
aśrupūrṇekṣaṇā kṛṣṇā kṛṣṇam vacanam abravīt
35. The lotus-eyed (padmākṣī) Draupadi (kṛṣṇā), with her elephant-like gait (gajagāminī) and eyes full of tears (aśrupūrṇekṣaṇā), approached lotus-eyed (puṇḍarīkākṣa) Krishna (kṛṣṇa) and spoke these words.
अयं ते पुण्डरीकाक्ष दुःशासनकरोद्धृतः ।
स्मर्तव्यः सर्वकालेषु परेषां संधिमिच्छता ॥३६॥
36. ayaṁ te puṇḍarīkākṣa duḥśāsanakaroddhṛtaḥ ,
smartavyaḥ sarvakāleṣu pareṣāṁ saṁdhimicchatā.
36. ayam te puṇḍarīkākṣa duḥśāsanakaroddhṛtaḥ
smartavyaḥ sarvakāleṣu pareṣām sandhim icchatā
36. O lotus-eyed (puṇḍarīkākṣa) (Krishna), this (hair) of yours, which was pulled by Duḥśāsana's hand, must be remembered at all times by anyone desiring peace (sandhi) with (our) enemies.
यदि भीमार्जुनौ कृष्ण कृपणौ संधिकामुकौ ।
पिता मे योत्स्यते वृद्धः सह पुत्रैर्महारथैः ॥३७॥
37. yadi bhīmārjunau kṛṣṇa kṛpaṇau saṁdhikāmukau ,
pitā me yotsyate vṛddhaḥ saha putrairmahārathaiḥ.
37. yadi bhīmārjunau kṛṣṇa kṛpaṇau saṃdhikāmukau pitā
me yotsyate vṛddhaḥ saha putraiḥ mahārathaiḥ
37. O Kṛṣṇa, if Bhīma and Arjuna are weak and desirous of a peace treaty, then my aged father will fight along with his sons, who are great charioteers.
पञ्च चैव महावीर्याः पुत्रा मे मधुसूदन ।
अभिमन्युं पुरस्कृत्य योत्स्यन्ति कुरुभिः सह ॥३८॥
38. pañca caiva mahāvīryāḥ putrā me madhusūdana ,
abhimanyuṁ puraskṛtya yotsyanti kurubhiḥ saha.

abhimanyuṃ puraskṛtya yotsyanti kurubhiḥ saha
38. And indeed, O Madhusūdana (slayer of Madhu), my five highly valorous sons will fight against the Kurus, with Abhimanyu at their forefront.
दुःशासनभुजं श्यामं संछिन्नं पांसुगुण्ठितम् ।
यद्यहं तं न पश्यामि का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥३९॥
39. duḥśāsanabhujaṁ śyāmaṁ saṁchinnaṁ pāṁsuguṇṭhitam ,
yadyahaṁ taṁ na paśyāmi kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
39. duḥśāsanabhujaṃ śyāmaṃ saṃchinnaṃ pāṃsuguṇṭhitam
yadi ahaṃ taṃ na paśyāmi kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me
39. If I do not see that dark arm of Duḥśāsana, severed and smeared with dust, what peace will there be for my heart?
त्रयोदश हि वर्षाणि प्रतीक्षन्त्या गतानि मे ।
निधाय हृदये मन्युं प्रदीप्तमिव पावकम् ॥४०॥
40. trayodaśa hi varṣāṇi pratīkṣantyā gatāni me ,
nidhāya hṛdaye manyuṁ pradīptamiva pāvakam.
40. trayodaśa hi varṣāṇi pratīkṣantyā gatāni me
nidhāya hṛdaye manyuṃ pradīptam iva pāvakam
40. Indeed, thirteen years have passed for me, who was waiting, having kept a blazing anger (manyu) like fire in my heart.
विदीर्यते मे हृदयं भीमवाक्शल्यपीडितम् ।
योऽयमद्य महाबाहुर्धर्मं समनुपश्यति ॥४१॥
41. vidīryate me hṛdayaṁ bhīmavākśalyapīḍitam ,
yo'yamadya mahābāhurdharmaṁ samanupaśyati.
41. vidīryate me hṛdayam bhīmavākśalyapīḍitam
yaḥ ayam adya mahābāhuḥ dharmam samanupaśyati
41. My heart is being torn apart, tormented by the arrow-like words of Bhima, because this mighty-armed man today observes his natural law (dharma).
इत्युक्त्वा बाष्पसन्नेन कण्ठेनायतलोचना ।
रुरोद कृष्णा सोत्कम्पं सस्वरं बाष्पगद्गदम् ॥४२॥
42. ityuktvā bāṣpasannena kaṇṭhenāyatalocanā ,
ruroda kṛṣṇā sotkampaṁ sasvaraṁ bāṣpagadgadam.
42. iti uktvā bāṣpasannena kaṇṭhena āyatalocanā
ruroda kṛṣṇā sa-utkampam sa-svaram bāṣpagadgadam
42. Having spoken thus, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi), whose eyes were wide and whose throat was choked with tears, wept loudly with trembling and a voice broken by weeping.
स्तनौ पीनायतश्रोणी सहितावभिवर्षती ।
द्रवीभूतमिवात्युष्णमुत्सृजद्वारि नेत्रजम् ॥४३॥
43. stanau pīnāyataśroṇī sahitāvabhivarṣatī ,
dravībhūtamivātyuṣṇamutsṛjadvāri netrajam.
43. stanau pīna-āyata-śroṇī sahitau abhivarṣatī
dravībhūtam iva ati-uṣṇam utsṛjat vāri netrajam
43. She, of full and wide hips, was drenching her twin breasts, as if shedding intensely hot, liquefied, eye-born water (tears).
तामुवाच महाबाहुः केशवः परिसान्त्वयन् ।
अचिराद्द्रक्ष्यसे कृष्णे रुदतीर्भरतस्त्रियः ॥४४॥
44. tāmuvāca mahābāhuḥ keśavaḥ parisāntvayan ,
acirāddrakṣyase kṛṣṇe rudatīrbharatastriyaḥ.
44. tām uvāca mahābāhuḥ keśavaḥ parisāntvayan
acirāt drakṣyase kṛṣṇe rudatīḥ bharata-striyaḥ
44. The mighty-armed Keśava (Krishna), comforting her, said to her: 'O Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi), soon you will see the wives of the Bharatas weeping!'
एवं ता भीरु रोत्स्यन्ति निहतज्ञातिबान्धवाः ।
हतमित्रा हतबला येषां क्रुद्धासि भामिनि ॥४५॥
45. evaṁ tā bhīru rotsyanti nihatajñātibāndhavāḥ ,
hatamitrā hatabalā yeṣāṁ kruddhāsi bhāmini.
45. evam tāḥ bhīru rotsyanti nihatajñātibāndhavāḥ
hatamitrāḥ hatabalāḥ yeṣām kruddhā asi bhāmini
45. O timid one, O passionate woman, those whose relatives and kinsmen are slain, whose friends are destroyed, and whose power is lost, upon whom you are enraged, will thus lament.
अहं च तत्करिष्यामि भीमार्जुनयमैः सह ।
युधिष्ठिरनियोगेन दैवाच्च विधिनिर्मितात् ॥४६॥
46. ahaṁ ca tatkariṣyāmi bhīmārjunayamaiḥ saha ,
yudhiṣṭhiraniyogena daivācca vidhinirmitāt.
46. aham ca tat kariṣyāmi bhīmārjunayamaiḥ saha
yudhiṣṭhiraniniyogena daivāt ca vidhinirmitāt
46. I, along with Bhīma, Arjuna, and the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), will accomplish that, by the command of Yudhiṣṭhira and by the destiny (vidhi) ordained by providence.
धार्तराष्ट्राः कालपक्वा न चेच्छृण्वन्ति मे वचः ।
शेष्यन्ते निहता भूमौ श्वशृगालादनीकृताः ॥४७॥
47. dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kālapakvā na cecchṛṇvanti me vacaḥ ,
śeṣyante nihatā bhūmau śvaśṛgālādanīkṛtāḥ.
47. dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kālapakvāḥ na cet śṛṇvanti me
vacaḥ śeṣyante nihatāḥ bhūmau śvaśṛgālādanīkṛtāḥ
47. If the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, ripe for destruction, do not listen to my words, they will lie slain on the ground, made food for dogs and jackals.
चलेद्धि हिमवाञ्शैलो मेदिनी शतधा भवेत् ।
द्यौः पतेच्च सनक्षत्रा न मे मोघं वचो भवेत् ॥४८॥
48. caleddhi himavāñśailo medinī śatadhā bhavet ,
dyauḥ patecca sanakṣatrā na me moghaṁ vaco bhavet.
48. calet hi himavān śailaḥ medinī śatadhā bhavet
dyauḥ patet ca sanakṣatrā na me mogham vacaḥ bhavet
48. Indeed, even if the Himālayan mountain were to move, the earth were to split into a hundred pieces, and the sky, along with its stars, were to fall, my words would certainly not be in vain.
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि कृष्णे बाष्पो निगृह्यताम् ।
हतामित्राञ्श्रिया युक्तानचिराद्द्रक्ष्यसे पतीन् ॥४९॥
49. satyaṁ te pratijānāmi kṛṣṇe bāṣpo nigṛhyatām ,
hatāmitrāñśriyā yuktānacirāddrakṣyase patīn.
49. satyam te pratijānāmi kṛṣṇe bāṣpaḥ nigṛhyatām
hatāmitrān śriyā yuktān acirāt drakṣyase patīn
49. O Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), I truly promise you: let your tears be restrained. You will soon see your husbands, having slain their enemies and endowed with prosperity.
