जनमेजय उवाच ।
पाण्डोः पुत्रा महात्मानः सर्वे दिव्यपराक्रमाः ।
कियन्तं कालमवसन्पर्वते गन्धमादने ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
pāṇḍoḥ putrā mahātmānaḥ sarve divyaparākramāḥ ,

1. Janamejaya said: "How long did the high-souled (mahātman) sons of Pāṇḍu, all possessing divine valor, reside on Mount Gandhamādana?"
कानि चाभ्यवहार्याणि तत्र तेषां महात्मनाम् ।
वसतां लोकवीराणामासंस्तद्ब्रूहि सत्तम ॥२॥
2. kāni cābhyavahāryāṇi tatra teṣāṁ mahātmanām ,
vasatāṁ lokavīrāṇāmāsaṁstadbrūhi sattama.
2. kāni ca abhyavahāryāṇi tatra teṣām mahātmanām
| vasatām lokavīrāṇām āsan tat brūhi sattama
2. And what provisions were there for those high-souled (mahātman) heroes among men who resided there? Tell me that, O best of good men (sattama).
विस्तरेण च मे शंस भीमसेनपराक्रमम् ।
यद्यच्चक्रे महाबाहुस्तस्मिन्हैमवते गिरौ ।
न खल्वासीत्पुनर्युद्धं तस्य यक्षैर्द्विजोत्तम ॥३॥
3. vistareṇa ca me śaṁsa bhīmasenaparākramam ,
yadyaccakre mahābāhustasminhaimavate girau ,
na khalvāsītpunaryuddhaṁ tasya yakṣairdvijottama.
3. vistareṇa ca me śaṃsa bhīmasenaparākramam
| yat yat cakre mahābāhuḥ tasmin
haimavate girau | na khalu āsīt
punaḥ yuddham tasya yakṣaiḥ dvijottama
3. And describe to me in detail the valor (parākrama) of Bhīmasena, and all that the mighty-armed one did on that Himalayan (haimavata) mountain. Surely there was no further battle for him with the Yakṣas, O best of twice-born (dvijottama)!
कच्चित्समागमस्तेषामासीद्वैश्रवणेन च ।
तत्र ह्यायाति धनद आर्ष्टिषेणो यथाब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. kaccitsamāgamasteṣāmāsīdvaiśravaṇena ca ,
tatra hyāyāti dhanada ārṣṭiṣeṇo yathābravīt.
4. kaccit samāgamaḥ teṣām āsīt vaiśravaṇena ca
tatra hi āyāti dhanadaḥ ārṣṭiṣeṇaḥ yathā abravīt
4. Did they have a meeting with Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera)? Indeed, Kubera, the giver of wealth, comes there, just as Ārṣṭiṣeṇa said he would.
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण तपोधन ।
न हि मे शृण्वतस्तृप्तिरस्ति तेषां विचेष्टितम् ॥५॥
5. etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ vistareṇa tapodhana ,
na hi me śṛṇvatastṛptirasti teṣāṁ viceṣṭitam.
5. etat icchāmi aham śrotum vistareṇa tapodhana
na hi me śṛṇvataḥ tṛptiḥ asti teṣām viceṣṭitam
5. O ascetic, I wish to hear this in detail. Indeed, I find no satisfaction as I listen to their deeds.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतदात्महितं श्रुत्वा तस्याप्रतिमतेजसः ।
शासनं सततं चक्रुस्तथैव भरतर्षभाः ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etadātmahitaṁ śrutvā tasyāpratimatejasaḥ ,
śāsanaṁ satataṁ cakrustathaiva bharatarṣabhāḥ.
6. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca etat ātmahitam śrutvā tasya
apratimatejasaḥ śāsanam satatam cakruḥ tathā eva bharatarṣabhāḥ
6. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard this beneficial instruction which was for their own welfare (ātman), from him of unparalleled splendor, the best of the Bharatas (Pandavas) constantly carried it out.
भुञ्जाना मुनिभोज्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च ।
शुद्धबाणहतानां च मृगाणां पिशितान्यपि ॥७॥
7. bhuñjānā munibhojyāni rasavanti phalāni ca ,
śuddhabāṇahatānāṁ ca mṛgāṇāṁ piśitānyapi.
7. bhuñjānāḥ munibhojyāni rasavanti phalāni ca
śuddhabāṇahatānām ca mṛgāṇām piśitāni api
7. They partook of delicious fruits, suitable as food for sages, and also the meat of deer that had been killed by clean arrows.
मेध्यानि हिमवत्पृष्ठे मधूनि विविधानि च ।
एवं ते न्यवसंस्तत्र पाण्डवा भरतर्षभाः ॥८॥
8. medhyāni himavatpṛṣṭhe madhūni vividhāni ca ,
evaṁ te nyavasaṁstatra pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabhāḥ.

evam te nyavasan tatra pāṇḍavāḥ bharatarṣabhāḥ
8. On the peaks of the Himalayas, there were pure (medhya) substances and various kinds of honey. In this way, those foremost among the Bhāratas, the Pāṇḍavas, resided there.
तथा निवसतां तेषां पञ्चमं वर्षमभ्यगात् ।
शृण्वतां लोमशोक्तानि वाक्यानि विविधानि च ॥९॥
9. tathā nivasatāṁ teṣāṁ pañcamaṁ varṣamabhyagāt ,
śṛṇvatāṁ lomaśoktāni vākyāni vividhāni ca.
9. tathā nivasatām teṣām pañcamam varṣam abhyagāt
śṛṇvatām lomaśoktāni vākyāni vividhāni ca
9. While they were residing in that manner, the fifth year arrived for them as they listened to various words spoken by Lomaśa.
कृत्यकाल उपस्थास्य इति चोक्त्वा घटोत्कचः ।
राक्षसैः सहितः सर्वैः पूर्वमेव गतः प्रभो ॥१०॥
10. kṛtyakāla upasthāsya iti coktvā ghaṭotkacaḥ ,
rākṣasaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ pūrvameva gataḥ prabho.
10. kṛtyakālaḥ upasthāsyaḥ iti ca uktvā ghaṭotkacaḥ
rākṣasaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ pūrvam eva gataḥ prabho
10. "The time for action (kṛtyakāla) will arrive," Ghaṭotkaca had said, and then, accompanied by all the Rākṣasas, he had already departed, O Lord.
आर्ष्टिषेणाश्रमे तेषां वसतां वै महात्मनाम् ।
अगच्छन्बहवो मासाः पश्यतां महदद्भुतम् ॥११॥
11. ārṣṭiṣeṇāśrame teṣāṁ vasatāṁ vai mahātmanām ,
agacchanbahavo māsāḥ paśyatāṁ mahadadbhutam.
11. ārṣṭiṣeṇāśrame teṣām vasatām vai mahātmanām
agacchan bahavaḥ māsāḥ paśyatām mahat adbhutam
11. While those great souls (mahātman) were dwelling in the hermitage (āśrama) of Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, indeed many months passed as they witnessed a great wonder.
तैस्तत्र रममाणैश्च विहरद्भिश्च पाण्डवैः ।
प्रीतिमन्तो महाभागा मुनयश्चारणास्तथा ॥१२॥
12. taistatra ramamāṇaiśca viharadbhiśca pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
prītimanto mahābhāgā munayaścāraṇāstathā.
12. taiḥ tatra ramamāṇaiḥ ca viharadbhiḥ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ
prītimantaḥ mahābhāgāḥ munayaḥ cāraṇāḥ tathā
12. While the Pandavas were delighting and sporting there, the highly fortunate sages and celestial bards (charaṇas) were also delighted.
आजग्मुः पाण्डवान्द्रष्टुं सिद्धात्मानो यतव्रताः ।
तैस्तैः सह कथाश्चक्रुर्दिव्या भरतसत्तमाः ॥१३॥
13. ājagmuḥ pāṇḍavāndraṣṭuṁ siddhātmāno yatavratāḥ ,
taistaiḥ saha kathāścakrurdivyā bharatasattamāḥ.
13. ājagmuḥ pāṇḍavān draṣṭum siddhātmanaḥ yatavratāḥ
taiḥ taiḥ saha kathāḥ cakruḥ divyāḥ bharatasattamāḥ
13. Perfected souls (ātman) who had controlled their vows came to see the Pandavas. They engaged in divine conversations with them, O best among the Bharatas.
ततः कतिपयाहस्य महाह्रदनिवासिनम् ।
ऋद्धिमन्तं महानागं सुपर्णः सहसाहरत् ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ katipayāhasya mahāhradanivāsinam ,
ṛddhimantaṁ mahānāgaṁ suparṇaḥ sahasāharat.
14. tataḥ katipayāhasya mahāhradanivāsinam
ṛddhimantam mahānāgam suparṇaḥ sahasā aharat
14. After a few days, Suparṇa (Garuda) suddenly carried away a mighty great serpent (Nāga) that dwelled in a large lake.
प्राकम्पत महाशैलः प्रामृद्यन्त महाद्रुमाः ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि पाण्डवाश्च तदद्भुतम् ॥१५॥
15. prākampata mahāśailaḥ prāmṛdyanta mahādrumāḥ ,
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni pāṇḍavāśca tadadbhutam.
15. prākampata mahāśailaḥ prāmṛdyanta mahādrumāḥ
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni pāṇḍavāḥ ca tat adbhutam
15. The great mountain greatly trembled, and the mighty trees were crushed. All beings, and the Pandavas as well, witnessed that amazing event.
ततः शैलोत्तमस्याग्रात्पाण्डवान्प्रति मारुतः ।
अवहत्सर्वमाल्यानि गन्धवन्ति शुभानि च ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ śailottamasyāgrātpāṇḍavānprati mārutaḥ ,
avahatsarvamālyāni gandhavanti śubhāni ca.
16. tataḥ śailottamasya agrāt pāṇḍavān prati mārutaḥ
avahat sarvamālyāni gandhavanti śubhāni ca
16. Then, from the peak of that excellent mountain, the wind carried towards the Pāṇḍavas all the fragrant and auspicious garlands.
तत्र पुष्पाणि दिव्यानि सुहृद्भिः सह पाण्डवाः ।
ददृशुः पञ्च वर्णानि द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी ॥१७॥
17. tatra puṣpāṇi divyāni suhṛdbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
dadṛśuḥ pañca varṇāni draupadī ca yaśasvinī.
17. tatra puṣpāṇi divyāni suhṛdbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavāḥ
dadṛśuḥ pañca varṇāni draupadī ca yaśasvinī
17. There, the Pāṇḍavas, along with their friends, and the glorious Draupadī saw divine flowers of five colors.
भीमसेनं ततः कृष्णा काले वचनमब्रवीत् ।
विविक्ते पर्वतोद्देशे सुखासीनं महाभुजम् ॥१८॥
18. bhīmasenaṁ tataḥ kṛṣṇā kāle vacanamabravīt ,
vivikte parvatoddeśe sukhāsīnaṁ mahābhujam.
18. bhīmasenam tataḥ kṛṣṇā kāle vacanam abravīt
vivikte parvato'ddeśe sukhāsīnam mahābhujam
18. Then, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) spoke a statement at the appropriate time to the mighty-armed Bhīmasena, who was comfortably seated in a secluded mountain region.
सुपर्णानिलवेगेन श्वसनेन महाबलात् ।
पञ्चवर्णानि पात्यन्ते पुष्पाणि भरतर्षभ ।
प्रत्यक्षं सर्वभूतानां नदीमश्वरथां प्रति ॥१९॥
19. suparṇānilavegena śvasanena mahābalāt ,
pañcavarṇāni pātyante puṣpāṇi bharatarṣabha ,
pratyakṣaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ nadīmaśvarathāṁ prati.

mahābalāt pañcavarṇāni pātyante puṣpāṇi
bharatarṣabha pratyakṣam
sarvabhūtānām nadīm aśvarathām prati
19. O best of the Bhāratas, five-colored flowers are falling with great force, propelled by the wind as if by the velocity of Garuḍa (Suparṇa), visible to all beings, towards the river Aśvarathā.
खाण्डवे सत्यसंधेन भ्रात्रा तव नरेश्वर ।
गन्धर्वोरगरक्षांसि वासवश्च निवारितः ।
हता मायाविनश्चोग्रा धनुः प्राप्तं च गाण्डिवम् ॥२०॥
20. khāṇḍave satyasaṁdhena bhrātrā tava nareśvara ,
gandharvoragarakṣāṁsi vāsavaśca nivāritaḥ ,
hatā māyāvinaścogrā dhanuḥ prāptaṁ ca gāṇḍivam.
20. khāṇḍave satyasaṃdhena bhrātrā tava
nareśvara gandharvoragarakṣāṃsi
vāsavaḥ ca nivāritaḥ hatāḥ māyāvinaḥ
ca ugrāḥ dhanuḥ prāptam ca gāṇḍīvam
20. O king among men, in Khandava, your brother, who is true to his promise, warded off the Gandharvas, serpents, Rākṣasas, and even Indra (Vāsava). The terrible illusionists were slain, and the Gaṇḍīva bow was acquired.
तवापि सुमहत्तेजो महद्बाहुबलं च ते ।
अविषह्यमनाधृष्यं शतक्रतुबलोपमम् ॥२१॥
21. tavāpi sumahattejo mahadbāhubalaṁ ca te ,
aviṣahyamanādhṛṣyaṁ śatakratubalopamam.
21. tava api sumahat tejaḥ mahat bāhubalam ca
te aviṣahyam anādhṛṣyam śatakratubalopamam
21. Your very great brilliance (tejas) and mighty arm-strength are indeed irresistible, unassailable, and comparable to the power of Indra (Śatakratu).
त्वद्बाहुबलवेगेन त्रासिताः सर्वराक्षसाः ।
हित्वा शैलं प्रपद्यन्तां भीमसेन दिशो दश ॥२२॥
22. tvadbāhubalavegena trāsitāḥ sarvarākṣasāḥ ,
hitvā śailaṁ prapadyantāṁ bhīmasena diśo daśa.
22. tvat bāhubalavegena trāsitāḥ sarvarākṣasāḥ
hitvā śailam prapadyantām bhīmasena diśaḥ daśa
22. O Bhīmasena, all Rākṣasas, terrified by the force of your arm-strength, should abandon this mountain and flee to the ten directions.
ततः शैलोत्तमस्याग्रं चित्रमाल्यधरं शिवम् ।
व्यपेतभयसंमोहाः पश्यन्तु सुहृदस्तव ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ śailottamasyāgraṁ citramālyadharaṁ śivam ,
vyapetabhayasaṁmohāḥ paśyantu suhṛdastava.
23. tataḥ śailottamasya agram citramālyadharam
śivam vyapetabhayasaṃmohāḥ paśyantu suhṛdaḥ tava
23. Then, your friends, freed from fear and delusion, should gaze upon the auspicious peak of this excellent mountain, which is adorned with colorful garlands.
एवं प्रणिहितं भीम चिरात्प्रभृति मे मनः ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि शैलाग्रं त्वद्बाहुबलमाश्रिता ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ praṇihitaṁ bhīma cirātprabhṛti me manaḥ ,
draṣṭumicchāmi śailāgraṁ tvadbāhubalamāśritā.
24. evam praṇihitam bhīma cirātprabhṛti me manaḥ
draṣṭum icchāmi śailāgram tvadbāhubalam āśritā
24. O Bhīma, my mind has been fixed on this for a long time. Relying on the strength of your arms, I wish to see the mountain peak.
ततः क्षिप्तमिवात्मानं द्रौपद्या स परंतपः ।
नामृष्यत महाबाहुः प्रहारमिव सद्गवः ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ kṣiptamivātmānaṁ draupadyā sa paraṁtapaḥ ,
nāmṛṣyata mahābāhuḥ prahāramiva sadgavaḥ.
25. tataḥ kṣiptam iva ātmānam draupadyā sa parantapaḥ
na amṛṣyata mahābāhuḥ prahāram iva sadgavaḥ
25. Then, that mighty-armed tormentor of foes could not tolerate it, feeling as if his very being (ātman) had been thrown (reproached) by Draupadī, just as a powerful bull would not endure a blow.
सिंहर्षभगतिः श्रीमानुदारः कनकप्रभः ।
मनस्वी बलवान्दृप्तो मानी शूरश्च पाण्डवः ॥२६॥
26. siṁharṣabhagatiḥ śrīmānudāraḥ kanakaprabhaḥ ,
manasvī balavāndṛpto mānī śūraśca pāṇḍavaḥ.
26. siṃharṣabhagatiḥ śrīmān udāraḥ kanakaprabhaḥ
manasvī balavān dṛptaḥ mānī śūraḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ
26. That Pāṇḍava was glorious, noble, and radiant like gold, possessing the gait of a lion and a mighty bull. He was high-minded, powerful, confident, self-respecting, and brave.
लोहिताक्षः पृथुव्यंसो मत्तवारणविक्रमः ।
सिंहदंष्ट्रो बृहत्स्कन्धः शालपोत इवोद्गतः ॥२७॥
27. lohitākṣaḥ pṛthuvyaṁso mattavāraṇavikramaḥ ,
siṁhadaṁṣṭro bṛhatskandhaḥ śālapota ivodgataḥ.
27. lohitākṣaḥ pṛthuvyaṃsaḥ mattavāraṇavikramaḥ
siṃhadaṃṣṭraḥ bṛhatskandhaḥ śālapotaḥ iva udgataḥ
27. He was red-eyed and broad-shouldered, possessing the valor and stride of an enraged elephant, with fangs like a lion, and massive shoulders, having grown tall and strong like a young śāla tree.
महात्मा चारुसर्वाङ्गः कम्बुग्रीवो महाभुजः ।
रुक्मपृष्ठं धनुः खड्गं तूणांश्चापि परामृशत् ॥२८॥
28. mahātmā cārusarvāṅgaḥ kambugrīvo mahābhujaḥ ,
rukmapṛṣṭhaṁ dhanuḥ khaḍgaṁ tūṇāṁścāpi parāmṛśat.
28. mahātmā cārusarvāṅgaḥ kambugrīvaḥ mahābhujaḥ
rukmapṛṣṭham dhanuḥ khaḍgam tūṇān ca api parāmṛśat
28. The great-souled (mahā-ātman) one, with beautiful limbs, a conch-like neck, and mighty arms, grasped his gold-backed bow, sword, and quivers.
केसरीव यथोत्सिक्तः प्रभिन्न इव वारणः ।
व्यपेतभयसंमोहः शैलमभ्यपतद्बली ॥२९॥
29. kesarīva yathotsiktaḥ prabhinna iva vāraṇaḥ ,
vyapetabhayasaṁmohaḥ śailamabhyapatadbalī.
29. kesarī iva yathā utsiktah prabhinnah iva vāraṇaḥ
vyapetabhayasaṃmohaḥ śailam abhi apatat balī
29. Like an enraged lion or an elephant in rut, the powerful one, free from fear and delusion, charged towards the mountain.
तं मृगेन्द्रमिवायान्तं प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम् ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम् ॥३०॥
30. taṁ mṛgendramivāyāntaṁ prabhinnamiva vāraṇam ,
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharam.
30. tam mṛgendram iva āyāntam prabhinnam iva vāraṇam
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharam
30. All beings (sarva-bhūta) saw him as he approached, resembling a king of beasts and an elephant in rut, holding arrows, a sword, and a bow.
द्रौपद्या वर्धयन्हर्षं गदामादाय पाण्डवः ।
व्यपेतभयसंमोहः शैलराजं समाविशत् ॥३१॥
31. draupadyā vardhayanharṣaṁ gadāmādāya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
vyapetabhayasaṁmohaḥ śailarājaṁ samāviśat.
31. draupadyā vardhayan harṣam gadām ādāya pāṇḍavaḥ
vyapetabhayasaṃmohaḥ śailarājam sam āviśat
31. Increasing Draupadi's joy, the Pandava, taking up his mace and free from fear and delusion, entered the king of mountains.
न ग्लानिर्न च कातर्यं न वैक्लव्यं न मत्सरः ।
कदाचिज्जुषते पार्थमात्मजं मातरिश्वनः ॥३२॥
32. na glānirna ca kātaryaṁ na vaiklavyaṁ na matsaraḥ ,
kadācijjuṣate pārthamātmajaṁ mātariśvanaḥ.
32. na glāniḥ na ca kātaryam na vaiklavyam na matsaraḥ
| kadācit juṣate pārtham ātmajam mātariśvanaḥ
32. Neither fatigue, nor cowardice, nor agitation, nor envy ever afflicts Arjuna, the son of Mātariśvan (Vāyu).
तदेकायनमासाद्य विषमं भीमदर्शनम् ।
बहुतालोच्छ्रयं शृङ्गमारुरोह महाबलः ॥३३॥
33. tadekāyanamāsādya viṣamaṁ bhīmadarśanam ,
bahutālocchrayaṁ śṛṅgamāruroha mahābalaḥ.
33. tat ekāyanam āsādya viṣamam bhīmadarśanam
| bahutālocchrayam śṛṅgam ārūroha mahābalaḥ
33. Having reached that unique, formidable, and terrifyingly uneven peak, which rose to a great height, the mighty one ascended.
स किंनरमहानागमुनिगन्धर्वराक्षसान् ।
हर्षयन्पर्वतस्याग्रमाससाद महाबलः ॥३४॥
34. sa kiṁnaramahānāgamunigandharvarākṣasān ,
harṣayanparvatasyāgramāsasāda mahābalaḥ.
34. saḥ kinnaramahānāgamunigandharvarākṣasān |
harṣayan parvatasya agram āsasāda mahābalaḥ
34. Delighting the Kinnaras, great Nāgas, Munis, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas, the mighty one (Arjuna) reached the mountain's summit.
तत्र वैश्रवणावासं ददर्श भरतर्षभः ।
काञ्चनैः स्फाटिकाकारैर्वेश्मभिः समलंकृतम् ॥३५॥
35. tatra vaiśravaṇāvāsaṁ dadarśa bharatarṣabhaḥ ,
kāñcanaiḥ sphāṭikākārairveśmabhiḥ samalaṁkṛtam.
35. tatra vaiśravaṇāvāsam dadarśa bharatarṣabhaḥ |
kāñcanaiḥ sphāṭikākāraiḥ veśmabhiḥ samalaṅkṛtam
35. There, the best of the Bhāratas (Arjuna) saw the abode of Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera), which was well-adorned with golden, crystal-like mansions.
मोदयन्सर्वभूतानि गन्धमादनसंभवः ।
सर्वगन्धवहस्तत्र मारुतः सुसुखो ववौ ॥३६॥
36. modayansarvabhūtāni gandhamādanasaṁbhavaḥ ,
sarvagandhavahastatra mārutaḥ susukho vavau.
36. modayan sarvabhūtāni gandhamādanasaṃbhavaḥ
sarvagandhavahaḥ tatra mārutaḥ susukhaḥ vavau
36. There, the extremely pleasant wind, originating from the Gandhamādana mountain and carrying all fragrances, blew, delighting all beings.
चित्रा विविधवर्णाभाश्चित्रमञ्जरिधारिणः ।
अचिन्त्या विविधास्तत्र द्रुमाः परमशोभनाः ॥३७॥
37. citrā vividhavarṇābhāścitramañjaridhāriṇaḥ ,
acintyā vividhāstatra drumāḥ paramaśobhanāḥ.

37. There, the trees were of variegated and inconceivable kinds, shining with diverse colors, bearing wonderful blossoms, and supremely splendid.
रत्नजालपरिक्षिप्तं चित्रमाल्यधरं शिवम् ।
राक्षसाधिपतेः स्थानं ददर्श भरतर्षभः ॥३८॥
38. ratnajālaparikṣiptaṁ citramālyadharaṁ śivam ,
rākṣasādhipateḥ sthānaṁ dadarśa bharatarṣabhaḥ.

38. The best among the Bharatas (Bharata) saw the abode of the lord of Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), which was surrounded by networks of jewels, adorned with wonderful garlands, and auspicious.
गदाखड्गधनुष्पाणिः समभित्यक्तजीवितः ।
भीमसेनो महाबाहुस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥३९॥
39. gadākhaḍgadhanuṣpāṇiḥ samabhityaktajīvitaḥ ,
bhīmaseno mahābāhustasthau giririvācalaḥ.
39. gadākhaḍgadhanuṣpāṇiḥ samabhityaktajīvitaḥ
bhīmasenaḥ mahābāhuḥ tasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥ
39. With mace, sword, and bow in hand, and ready to sacrifice his life, the mighty-armed Bhīmasena stood immovable like a mountain.
ततः शङ्खमुपाध्मासीद्द्विषतां लोमहर्षणम् ।
ज्याघोषतलघोषं च कृत्वा भूतान्यमोहयत् ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ śaṅkhamupādhmāsīddviṣatāṁ lomaharṣaṇam ,
jyāghoṣatalaghoṣaṁ ca kṛtvā bhūtānyamohayat.
40. tataḥ śaṅkham upādhmāsīt dviṣatām lomaharṣaṇam
jyāghoṣatalaghoṣam ca kṛtvā bhūtāni amohayat
40. Then he blew the conch, which caused the enemies' hair to stand on end. And by creating the sound of his bowstring and the slap of his palm, he bewildered all beings.
ततः संहृष्टरोमाणः शब्दं तमभिदुद्रुवुः ।
यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वाः पाण्डवस्य समीपतः ॥४१॥
41. tataḥ saṁhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ śabdaṁ tamabhidudruvuḥ ,
yakṣarākṣasagandharvāḥ pāṇḍavasya samīpataḥ.
41. tataḥ saṃhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ śabdam tam abhidudruvuḥ
yakṣarākṣasagandharvāḥ pāṇḍavस्य samīpataḥ
41. Then, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and Gandharvas, whose hair stood on end, rushed towards that sound from the vicinity of the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
गदापरिघनिस्त्रिंशशक्तिशूलपरश्वधाः ।
प्रगृहीता व्यरोचन्त यक्षराक्षसबाहुभिः ॥४२॥
42. gadāparighanistriṁśaśaktiśūlaparaśvadhāḥ ,
pragṛhītā vyarocanta yakṣarākṣasabāhubhiḥ.

42. Maces, iron bars, swords, spears, lances, and axes, held by the arms of the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, gleamed brightly.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं तेषां तस्य च भारत ।
तैः प्रयुक्तान्महाकायैः शक्तिशूलपरश्वधान् ।
भल्लैर्भीमः प्रचिच्छेद भीमवेगतरैस्ततः ॥४३॥
43. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ teṣāṁ tasya ca bhārata ,
taiḥ prayuktānmahākāyaiḥ śaktiśūlaparaśvadhān ,
bhallairbhīmaḥ praciccheda bhīmavegataraistataḥ.

43. Then, O Bhārata, a battle began between them and that Pāṇḍava. Thereupon, Bhīma, with his exceedingly swift arrows, cut down the spears, lances, and axes hurled by those great-bodied (Yakṣas and Rākṣasas) beings.
अन्तरिक्षचराणां च भूमिष्ठानां च गर्जताम् ।
शरैर्विव्याध गात्राणि राक्षसानां महाबलः ॥४४॥
44. antarikṣacarāṇāṁ ca bhūmiṣṭhānāṁ ca garjatām ,
śarairvivyādha gātrāṇi rākṣasānāṁ mahābalaḥ.

| śaraiḥ vivyādha gātrāṇi rākṣasānām mahābalaḥ
44. The mighty one pierced the limbs of the roaring rākṣasas, both those moving in the sky and those standing on the ground, with arrows.
सा लोहितमहावृष्टिरभ्यवर्षन्महाबलम् ।
कायेभ्यः प्रच्युता धारा राक्षसानां समन्ततः ॥४५॥
45. sā lohitamahāvṛṣṭirabhyavarṣanmahābalam ,
kāyebhyaḥ pracyutā dhārā rākṣasānāṁ samantataḥ.
45. sā lohitamahāvr̥ṣṭiḥ abhyavarṣat mahābalam |
kāyebhyaḥ pracyutā dhārā rākṣasānām samantataḥ
45. That great shower of blood rained upon the mighty one. All around, streams of blood flowed from the bodies of the rākṣasas.
भीमबाहुबलोत्सृष्टैर्बहुधा यक्षरक्षसाम् ।
विनिकृत्तान्यदृश्यन्त शरीराणि शिरांसि च ॥४६॥
46. bhīmabāhubalotsṛṣṭairbahudhā yakṣarakṣasām ,
vinikṛttānyadṛśyanta śarīrāṇi śirāṁsi ca.
46. bhīmabāhubalotsr̥ṣṭaiḥ bahudhā yakṣarakṣasām

46. The bodies and heads of the yakṣas and rākṣasas were seen severed in many ways by (weapons) released with the immense power of Bhīma's arms.
प्रच्छाद्यमानं रक्षोभिः पाण्डवं प्रियदर्शनम् ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि सूर्यमभ्रगणैरिव ॥४७॥
47. pracchādyamānaṁ rakṣobhiḥ pāṇḍavaṁ priyadarśanam ,
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni sūryamabhragaṇairiva.

47. All beings saw the handsome Pāṇḍava being obscured by the rākṣasas, just as one sees the sun hidden by masses of clouds.
स रश्मिभिरिवादित्यः शरैररिनिघातिभिः ।
सर्वानार्छन्महाबाहुर्बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ॥४८॥
48. sa raśmibhirivādityaḥ śarairarinighātibhiḥ ,
sarvānārchanmahābāhurbalavānsatyavikramaḥ.
48. saḥ raśmibhiḥ iva ādityaḥ śaraiḥ arinighātibhiḥ
sarvān ārcchan mahābāhuḥ balavān satyavikramaḥ
48. Like the sun (āditya) with its rays, that mighty-armed (mahābāhu), powerful one, whose valor (vikrama) was true (satya), struck down all of them with his enemy-slaying arrows.
अभितर्जयमानाश्च रुवन्तश्च महारवान् ।
न मोहं भीमसेनस्य ददृशुः सर्वराक्षसाः ॥४९॥
49. abhitarjayamānāśca ruvantaśca mahāravān ,
na mohaṁ bhīmasenasya dadṛśuḥ sarvarākṣasāḥ.
49. abhitārjayamānāḥ ca ruvantaḥ ca mahāravān
na moham bhīmasenasya dadṛśuḥ sarvarākṣasāḥ
49. Even while threatening and emitting great roars, none of the rākṣasas could perceive any confusion or bewilderment (moha) in Bhīmasena.
ते शरैः क्षतसर्वाङ्गा भीमसेनभयार्दिताः ।
भीममार्तस्वरं चक्रुर्विप्रकीर्णमहायुधाः ॥५०॥
50. te śaraiḥ kṣatasarvāṅgā bhīmasenabhayārditāḥ ,
bhīmamārtasvaraṁ cakrurviprakīrṇamahāyudhāḥ.
50. te śaraiḥ kṣatasarvāṅgāḥ bhīmasenabhayārditāḥ
bhīmam ārtasvaram cakruḥ viprakīrṇamahāyudhāḥ
50. With all their limbs wounded by arrows, tormented by the fear of Bhīmasena, and their great weapons scattered, they (the rākṣasas) let out a terrible cry of distress.
उत्सृज्य ते गदाशूलानसिशक्तिपरश्वधान् ।
दक्षिणां दिशमाजग्मुस्त्रासिता दृढधन्वना ॥५१॥
51. utsṛjya te gadāśūlānasiśaktiparaśvadhān ,
dakṣiṇāṁ diśamājagmustrāsitā dṛḍhadhanvanā.

dakṣiṇām diśam ājagmuḥ trāsitāḥ dṛḍhadhanvanā
51. Abandoning their maces, spears, swords, lances, and battle-axes, they (the rākṣasas), terrified by the formidable archer (Bhīmasena), fled towards the southern direction.
तत्र शूलगदापाणिर्व्यूढोरस्को महाभुजः ।
सखा वैश्रवणस्यासीन्मणिमान्नाम राक्षसः ॥५२॥
52. tatra śūlagadāpāṇirvyūḍhorasko mahābhujaḥ ,
sakhā vaiśravaṇasyāsīnmaṇimānnāma rākṣasaḥ.
52. tatra śūlagadāpāṇiḥ vyūḍhoraskaḥ mahābhujaḥ
sakhā vaiśravaṇasya āsīt maṇimān nāma rākṣasaḥ
52. There was a demon named Maṇimān, a friend of Vaiśravaṇa, who carried a spear and a mace, was broad-chested and mighty-armed.
अदर्शयदधीकारं पौरुषं च महाबलः ।
स तान्दृष्ट्वा परावृत्तान्स्मयमान इवाब्रवीत् ॥५३॥
53. adarśayadadhīkāraṁ pauruṣaṁ ca mahābalaḥ ,
sa tāndṛṣṭvā parāvṛttānsmayamāna ivābravīt.
53. adarśayat adhīkāram pauruṣam ca mahābalaḥ saḥ
tān dṛṣṭvā parāvṛttān smayamānaḥ iva abravīt
53. The mighty (Maṇimān) displayed his authority and valor. Seeing them (the fleeing soldiers) turn back, he spoke as if with a smile.
एकेन बहवः संख्ये मानुषेण पराजिताः ।
प्राप्य वैश्रवणावासं किं वक्ष्यथ धनेश्वरम् ॥५४॥
54. ekena bahavaḥ saṁkhye mānuṣeṇa parājitāḥ ,
prāpya vaiśravaṇāvāsaṁ kiṁ vakṣyatha dhaneśvaram.
54. ekena bahavaḥ saṃkhye mānuṣeṇa parājitāḥ prāpya
vaiśravaṇāvāsam kim vakṣyatha dhaneśvaram
54. "Many of you have been defeated in battle by a single human. When you reach the dwelling of Vaiśravaṇa, what will you say to the lord of wealth?"
एवमाभाष्य तान्सर्वान्न्यवर्तत स राक्षसः ।
शक्तिशूलगदापाणिरभ्यधावच्च पाण्डवम् ॥५५॥
55. evamābhāṣya tānsarvānnyavartata sa rākṣasaḥ ,
śaktiśūlagadāpāṇirabhyadhāvacca pāṇḍavam.
55. evam ābhāṣya tān sarvān nyavartata saḥ rākṣasaḥ
śaktiśūlagadāpāṇiḥ abhyadhāvat ca pāṇḍavam
55. Having thus spoken to all of them, that demon (Maṇimān) turned back. And carrying his spear, trident, and mace, he rushed towards the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
तमापतन्तं वेगेन प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम् ।
वत्सदन्तैस्त्रिभिः पार्श्वे भीमसेनः समर्पयत् ॥५६॥
56. tamāpatantaṁ vegena prabhinnamiva vāraṇam ,
vatsadantaistribhiḥ pārśve bhīmasenaḥ samarpayat.
56. tam āpatantam vegena prabhinnam iva vāraṇam |
vatsadantaiḥ tribhiḥ pārśve bhīmasenaḥ samarpayat
56. Bhimasena struck him in the side with three "vatsadanta" arrows as he rapidly approached, resembling an elephant in rut.
मणिमानपि संक्रुद्धः प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् ।
प्राहिणोद्भीमसेनाय परिक्षिप्य महाबलः ॥५७॥
57. maṇimānapi saṁkruddhaḥ pragṛhya mahatīṁ gadām ,
prāhiṇodbhīmasenāya parikṣipya mahābalaḥ.
57. maṇimān api saṃkruddhaḥ pragṛhya mahatīm gadām
| prāhiṇot bhīmasenāya parikṣipya mahābalaḥ
57. And Maṇimān, greatly enraged and mighty, seized a great mace, spun it around, and hurled it towards Bhimasena.
विद्युद्रूपां महाघोरामाकाशे महतीं गदाम् ।
शरैर्बहुभिरभ्यर्छद्भीमसेनः शिलाशितैः ॥५८॥
58. vidyudrūpāṁ mahāghorāmākāśe mahatīṁ gadām ,
śarairbahubhirabhyarchadbhīmasenaḥ śilāśitaiḥ.
58. vidyudrūpām mahāghorām ākāśe mahatīm gadām |
śaraiḥ bahubhiḥ abhyarchat bhīmasenaḥ śilāśitaiḥ
58. Bhimasena struck that great mace, which was lightning-like in form and exceedingly dreadful as it flew through the sky, with many arrows sharpened on stone.
प्रत्यहन्यन्त ते सर्वे गदामासाद्य सायकाः ।
न वेगं धारयामासुर्गदावेगस्य वेगिताः ॥५९॥
59. pratyahanyanta te sarve gadāmāsādya sāyakāḥ ,
na vegaṁ dhārayāmāsurgadāvegasya vegitāḥ.
59. pratyahanyanta te sarve gadām āsādya sāyakāḥ
| na vegam dhārayāmāsuḥ gadāvegasya vegitāḥ
59. All those arrows, upon striking the mace, were repelled. Overpowered by the mace's speed, they could not maintain their own velocity.
गदायुद्धसमाचारं बुध्यमानः स वीर्यवान् ।
व्यंसयामास तं तस्य प्रहारं भीमविक्रमः ॥६०॥
60. gadāyuddhasamācāraṁ budhyamānaḥ sa vīryavān ,
vyaṁsayāmāsa taṁ tasya prahāraṁ bhīmavikramaḥ.
60. gadāyuddhasamācāram budhyamānaḥ saḥ vīryavān
vyaṃsayāmāsa tam tasya prahāram bhīmavikramaḥ
60. That valorous Bhima, mighty in prowess, understanding the tactics of mace-fighting, foiled that attack of his opponent.
ततः शक्तिं महाघोरां रुक्मदण्डामयस्मयीम् ।
तस्मिन्नेवान्तरे धीमान्प्रजहाराथ राक्षसः ॥६१॥
61. tataḥ śaktiṁ mahāghorāṁ rukmadaṇḍāmayasmayīm ,
tasminnevāntare dhīmānprajahārātha rākṣasaḥ.
61. tataḥ śaktim mahāghorām rukmadaṇḍām ayasmayīm
tasmin eva antare dhīmān prajahāra atha rākṣasaḥ
61. Then, at that very moment, the intelligent demon hurled a very dreadful spear (śakti) that had a golden shaft and was made of iron.
सा भुजं भीमनिर्ह्रादा भित्त्वा भीमस्य दक्षिणम् ।
साग्निज्वाला महारौद्रा पपात सहसा भुवि ॥६२॥
62. sā bhujaṁ bhīmanirhrādā bhittvā bhīmasya dakṣiṇam ,
sāgnijvālā mahāraudrā papāta sahasā bhuvi.
62. sā bhujam bhīmanirhrādā bhittvā bhīmasya dakṣiṇam
sāgnijvālā mahāraudrā papāta sahasā bhuvi
62. That spear (śakti), with a terrible roar, having pierced Bhima's right arm, exceedingly dreadful and accompanied by flames, suddenly fell to the ground.
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासः शक्त्यामितपराक्रमः ।
गदां जग्राह कौरव्यो गदायुद्धविशारदः ॥६३॥
63. so'tividdho maheṣvāsaḥ śaktyāmitaparākramaḥ ,
gadāṁ jagrāha kauravyo gadāyuddhaviśāradaḥ.
63. saḥ atividdhaḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ śaktyā amitaparākramaḥ
gadām jagrāha kauravyaḥ gadāyuddhaviśāradaḥ
63. That great warrior (Bhīma), the descendant of Kuru, who was deeply wounded by the spear (śakti) and possessed immeasurable prowess, being skilled in mace-fighting, grasped his mace.
तां प्रगृह्योन्नदन्भीमः सर्वशैक्यायसीं गदाम् ।
तरसा सोऽभिदुद्राव मणिमन्तं महाबलम् ॥६४॥
64. tāṁ pragṛhyonnadanbhīmaḥ sarvaśaikyāyasīṁ gadām ,
tarasā so'bhidudrāva maṇimantaṁ mahābalam.
64. tām pragṛhya unnadan bhīmaḥ sarva-śaikyāyasīm
gadām tarasā saḥ abhidudrāva maṇimantam mahābalam
64. Bhīma, roaring, seized that mace, which was made entirely of iron. With great force, he then rushed towards the immensely powerful Maṇimān.
दीप्यमानं महाशूलं प्रगृह्य मणिमानपि ।
प्राहिणोद्भीमसेनाय वेगेन महता नदन् ॥६५॥
65. dīpyamānaṁ mahāśūlaṁ pragṛhya maṇimānapi ,
prāhiṇodbhīmasenāya vegena mahatā nadan.

prāhiṇot bhīmasenāya vegena mahatā nadan
65. Maṇimān also, seizing his blazing great spear, roared and hurled it with great speed towards Bhīmasena.
भङ्क्त्वा शूलं गदाग्रेण गदायुद्धविशारदः ।
अभिदुद्राव तं तूर्णं गरुत्मानिव पन्नगम् ॥६६॥
66. bhaṅktvā śūlaṁ gadāgreṇa gadāyuddhaviśāradaḥ ,
abhidudrāva taṁ tūrṇaṁ garutmāniva pannagam.
66. bhaṅktvā śūlam gadāgreṇa gadāyuddha-viśāradaḥ
abhidudrāva tam tūrṇam garutmān iva pannagam
66. Having broken the spear with the tip of his mace, Bhīma, who was skilled in mace-fighting, swiftly rushed towards him, just as Garuḍa (Garutmān) rushes towards a serpent.
सोऽन्तरिक्षमभिप्लुत्य विधूय सहसा गदाम् ।
प्रचिक्षेप महाबाहुर्विनद्य रणमूर्धनि ॥६७॥
67. so'ntarikṣamabhiplutya vidhūya sahasā gadām ,
pracikṣepa mahābāhurvinadya raṇamūrdhani.
67. saḥ antarikṣam abhiplutya vidhūya sahasā gadām
pracakṣepa mahābāhuḥ vinadya raṇa-mūrdhani
67. Then, that mighty-armed (Bhīma), having leaped into the sky, suddenly brandished his mace. Roaring, he then hurled it onto the battlefield.
सेन्द्राशनिरिवेन्द्रेण विसृष्टा वातरंहसा ।
हत्वा रक्षः क्षितिं प्राप्य कृत्येव निपपात ह ॥६८॥
68. sendrāśanirivendreṇa visṛṣṭā vātaraṁhasā ,
hatvā rakṣaḥ kṣitiṁ prāpya kṛtyeva nipapāta ha.
68. sa-indra-aśaniḥ iva indreṇa visṛṣṭā vāta-raṃhasā
hatvā rakṣaḥ kṣitiṃ prāpya kṛtyā iva nipapāta ha
68. After the Rākṣasa (demon) had been slain, he (Hidimba), like Indra's thunderbolt, and like a magical demoness (kṛtyā) hurled by Indra with the speed of wind, fell down upon the earth.
तं राक्षसं भीमबलं भीमसेनेन पातितम् ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि सिंहेनेव गवां पतिम् ॥६९॥
69. taṁ rākṣasaṁ bhīmabalaṁ bhīmasenena pātitam ,
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni siṁheneva gavāṁ patim.
69. tam rākṣasam bhīma-balam bhīmasenena pātitam
dadṛśuḥ sarva-bhūtāni siṃhena iva gavām patim
69. All beings saw that Rākṣasa (demon) of terrible strength, felled by Bhimasena, just as one would see the lord of cattle (bull) brought down by a lion.
तं प्रेक्ष्य निहतं भूमौ हतशेषा निशाचराः ।
भीममार्तस्वरं कृत्वा जग्मुः प्राचीं दिशं प्रति ॥७०॥
70. taṁ prekṣya nihataṁ bhūmau hataśeṣā niśācarāḥ ,
bhīmamārtasvaraṁ kṛtvā jagmuḥ prācīṁ diśaṁ prati.
70. tam prekṣya nihatam bhūmau hata-śeṣāḥ niśā-carāḥ
bhīmam ārta-svaram kṛtvā jagmuḥ prācīm diśam prati
70. Having seen him slain on the ground, the remaining Rākṣasas (night-wanderers) let out a terrible cry of distress and went towards the eastern direction.
