1.
Bhīṣma said: This is not the intellect (buddhi) of the king of Cedi, by which he challenges you, Acyuta. Surely, this is indeed the firm resolve of Kṛṣṇa, the maintainer of the universe.

2.
O Bhīmasena and others (Bhīmasenādya), which king on this earth, whose inner being (ātman) is afflicted by destiny, would indeed dare to insult me, just as this disgracer of his family does?

3.
O mighty-armed one, this [Śiśupāla] is indeed a certain portion of Hari's (Viṣṇu's) splendor and power. The widely renowned Hari (Viṣṇu) Himself desires to reclaim him.

4.
O tiger among the Kurus, it is by this (power) that this foolish king of Cedi roars excessively like a tiger, utterly disregarding all of us.

5.
Vaiśampāyana said: Thereupon, the king of Cedi (Śiśupāla) could not tolerate those words of Bhīṣma. Then, greatly enraged, he replied to Bhīṣma once again.
शिशुपाल उवाच ।

6.
Śiśupāla said: O Bhīṣma, let this influence of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) be for our enemies! You are his eulogizer, always standing up like a bard (bandi).

7.
O Bhishma, your mind always delights in praising others. If you praise the king, abandoning this Janardana (Kṛṣṇa)...

8.
Praise this Darada Bahlika, the best among kings, by whom, at his birth, this earth was torn apart.

9.
O Bhishma, praise this Karna, the lord of the Vanga and Anga regions, who is equal to Indra (Sahasrākṣa) in strength, and who wields the mighty bow.

stuhi stutyau imau bhīṣma satatam dvijasattamau

10.
O Bhishma, you should indeed constantly praise these two, Drona and Drona's son (Drauṇi) – the father and son, both great charioteers and the best among the twice-born (dvija) – for they are worthy of praise.
ययोरन्यतरो भीष्म संक्रुद्धः सचराचराम् ।

11.
O Bhishma, it is my opinion that one of these two, if greatly enraged, could utterly destroy this earth with all its moving and non-moving beings.

12.
O Bhishma, I truly do not see any king equal to Drona in battle, nor any equal to Ashwatthama. Yet, you do not wish to praise these two.

13.
O Bhishma, if your intention is always to praise, why do you not also praise kings like Shalya and the others?
किं हि शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद्वृद्धानां त्वया नृप ।

purā kathayatām nūnam na śrutam dharmavādinām
purā kathayatām nūnam na śrutam dharmavādinām
14.
O King, what can I possibly do now, since you certainly did not listen previously to the elders and those who spoke about natural law (dharma)?

anācaritam āryāṇām vṛttam etat caturvidham
15.
Self-criticism, self-praise, criticizing others, and praising others—this four-fold behavior is not practiced by noble individuals.

keśavam tat ca te bhīṣma na kaścit anumanyate
keśavam tat ca te bhīṣma na kaścit anumanyate
16.
O Bhīṣma, because you constantly praise this Keśava, who is unworthy of praise, out of delusion and devotion (bhakti), no one approves of that (praise) of yours.

17.
katham bhojasya puruṣe vargapāle durātmani
samāveśayase sarvam jagat kevalakāmyayā
samāveśayase sarvam jagat kevalakāmyayā
17.
How can you, merely out of desire, encompass the entire universe within this person (puruṣa) of Bhoja's lineage, who is a chief of a faction and a wicked individual (durātman)?
अथ वैषा न ते भक्तिः प्रकृतिं याति भारत ।

mayā eva kathitam pūrvam bhūliṅgaśakuniḥ yathā
mayā eva kathitam pūrvam bhūliṅgaśakuniḥ yathā
18.
Or else, O Bhārata, this devotion (bhakti) of yours does not attain its true intrinsic nature (prakṛti). Indeed, I have said this before, just like the bhūliṅga bird.
भूलिङ्गशकुनिर्नाम पार्श्वे हिमवतः परे ।

19.
O Bhishma, beyond the Himalayas, there is a bird named Bhūliṅga. Its utterances are always heard, full of reprehensible meaning.

20.
"Do not be rash!" This is what she constantly cries out. Yet, she herself, acting with extreme recklessness, does not comprehend her own actions.

21.
O Bhishma, indeed, that foolish bird snatches a bolt of meat that is stuck between the teeth of a lion as it is eating.

22.
O Bhishma, indeed, she survives without doubt only because the lion allows it. Similarly, you, who are ignorant of natural law (dharma), constantly utter such words.
इच्छतां पार्थिवेन्द्राणां भीष्म जीवस्यसंशयम् ।

23.
O Bhishma, among these supreme rulers who are undoubtedly eager for your life (death), there is indeed no one else whose actions (karma) are as detested by the people as yours.

24.
Vaishampayana said: Then, after hearing those bitter words from the lord of Chedi, Bhishma, O King (Janamejaya), spoke these words while the king of Chedi himself was listening.

25.
It is said that I live merely to fulfill the desires of these very kings. But I, for my part, do not value these rulers of men any more than blades of grass.

26.
When Bhishma had spoken thus, the kings then indeed became enraged. Some among them rejoiced there, while others censured Bhishma.

27.
Some great archers, having heard those words of Bhishma, said: "This Bhishma, who is sinful, arrogant, and old, does not deserve forgiveness."

Let this foolish (durmati) Bhishma be killed like an animal by all the enraged kings who have gathered, or let him be burned with fire from dry grass (kaṭāgninā).

29.
Having heard those words of theirs, then Bhishma, the wise (matimān) grandfather (pitāmaha) of the Kurus, spoke to those very rulers of the earth.
