दुर्योधन उवाच ।
एवं स भगवान्देवः सर्वलोकपितामहः ।
सारथ्यमकरोत्तत्र यत्र रुद्रोऽभवद्रथी ॥१॥

Duryodhana said: "Thus, that divine, illustrious god, the grandfather of all worlds (Brahma), performed charioteering there where Rudra (Shiva) himself was the warrior in the chariot."
रथिनाभ्यधिको वीरः कर्तव्यो रथसारथिः ।
तस्मात्त्वं पुरुषव्याघ्र नियच्छ तुरगान्युधि ॥२॥

2. rathinābhyadhiko vīraḥ kartavyo rathasārathiḥ ,
tasmāttvaṁ puruṣavyāghra niyaccha turagānyudhi.

A hero who is superior to (even other) charioteers should be appointed as the charioteer. Therefore, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), you must control the horses in battle!
संजय उवाच ।
ततः शल्यः परिष्वज्य सुतं ते वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
दुर्योधनममित्रघ्नः प्रीतो मद्राधिपस्तदा ॥३॥

Saṃjaya uvāca tataḥ prītaḥ amitraghnaḥ madrādhipaḥ śalyaḥ

Sanjaya said: "Then Shalya, the pleased king of Madras and slayer of enemies, having embraced your son Duryodhana, spoke these words."
एवं चेन्मन्यसे राजन्गान्धारे प्रियदर्शन ।
तस्मात्ते यत्प्रियं किंचित्तत्सर्वं करवाण्यहम् ॥४॥

4. evaṁ cenmanyase rājangāndhāre priyadarśana ,
tasmātte yatpriyaṁ kiṁcittatsarvaṁ karavāṇyaham.

rājan priyadarśana gāndhāre,
cet evam manyase,
tasmāt yat kiṃcit priyam te tat sarvam aham karavāṇi.

If you think this way, O King, beloved son of Gandhari, then whatever little is dear to you, all that I shall certainly do.
यत्रास्मि भरतश्रेष्ठ योग्यः कर्मणि कर्हिचित् ।
तत्र सर्वात्मना युक्तो वक्ष्ये कार्यधुरं तव ॥५॥

yatra aham karhicit karmaṇi yogyaḥ asmi,
tatra sarvātmanā yuktaḥ (san) tava kāryadhuram vakṣye.

5.
O best among the Bharatas, wherever I am capable in any task, there I shall, with all my being (ātman), diligently bear your burden of duty.
यत्तु कर्णमहं ब्रूयां हितकामः प्रियाप्रियम् ।
मम तत्क्षमतां सर्वं भवान्कर्णश्च सर्वशः ॥६॥
मम तत्क्षमतां सर्वं भवान्कर्णश्च सर्वशः ॥६॥
6. yattu karṇamahaṁ brūyāṁ hitakāmaḥ priyāpriyam ,
mama tatkṣamatāṁ sarvaṁ bhavānkarṇaśca sarvaśaḥ.
mama tatkṣamatāṁ sarvaṁ bhavānkarṇaśca sarvaśaḥ.

yat tu karṇam aham brūyām hitakāmaḥ priyam apriyam
mama tat kṣamatām sarvam bhavān karṇaḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
mama tat kṣamatām sarvam bhavān karṇaḥ ca sarvaśaḥ

tu yat aham hitakāmaḥ (san) karṇam priyam apriyam (vā) brūyām,
bhavān karṇaḥ ca sarvaśaḥ tat sarvam mama kṣamatām.
bhavān karṇaḥ ca sarvaśaḥ tat sarvam mama kṣamatām.
6.
But whatever I, desiring your welfare, might say to Karna, whether it be pleasant or unpleasant, may you and Karna completely forgive all that (speech) of mine.
कर्ण उवाच ।
ईशानस्य यथा ब्रह्मा यथा पार्थस्य केशवः ।
तथा नित्यं हिते युक्तो मद्रराज भजस्व नः ॥७॥
ईशानस्य यथा ब्रह्मा यथा पार्थस्य केशवः ।
तथा नित्यं हिते युक्तो मद्रराज भजस्व नः ॥७॥

īśānasya yathā brahmā yathā pārthasya keśavaḥ ,
tathā nityaṁ hite yukto madrarāja bhajasva naḥ.

karṇaḥ uvāca īśānasya yathā brahmā yathā pārthasya
keśavaḥ tathā nityam hite yuktaḥ madrarāja bhajasva naḥ
keśavaḥ tathā nityam hite yuktaḥ madrarāja bhajasva naḥ

karṇaḥ uvāca: madrarāja,
yathā īśānasya brahmā,
yathā pārthasya keśavaḥ,
tathā nityam hi te yuktaḥ naḥ bhajasva.
yathā īśānasya brahmā,
yathā pārthasya keśavaḥ,
tathā nityam hi te yuktaḥ naḥ bhajasva.
7.
Karna said: 'Just as Brahma serves Īśāna, and just as Keśava (Krishna) serves Pārtha (Arjuna), so too, O King of Madras, you should always be engaged in our welfare and serve us.'
शल्य उवाच ।
आत्मनिन्दात्मपूजा च परनिन्दा परस्तवः ।
अनाचरितमार्याणां वृत्तमेतच्चतुर्विधम् ॥८॥
आत्मनिन्दात्मपूजा च परनिन्दा परस्तवः ।
अनाचरितमार्याणां वृत्तमेतच्चतुर्विधम् ॥८॥
8. śalya uvāca ,
ātmanindātmapūjā ca paranindā parastavaḥ ,
anācaritamāryāṇāṁ vṛttametaccaturvidham.
ātmanindātmapūjā ca paranindā parastavaḥ ,
anācaritamāryāṇāṁ vṛttametaccaturvidham.

śalyaḥ uvāca ātmanindā ātmapūjā ca paranindā
parastavaḥ anācaritam āryāṇām vṛttam etat caturvidham
parastavaḥ anācaritam āryāṇām vṛttam etat caturvidham

śalyaḥ uvāca ātmanindā ca ātmapūjā,
paranindā ca parastavaḥ - etat caturvidham vṛttam āryāṇām anācaritam
paranindā ca parastavaḥ - etat caturvidham vṛttam āryāṇām anācaritam

Śalya said: Self-criticism and self-praise, as well as the criticism of others and flattery of others - this four-fold behavior (vṛttam) is not practiced by noble people.
यत्तु विद्वन्प्रवक्ष्यामि प्रत्ययार्थमहं तव ।
आत्मनः स्तवसंयुक्तं तन्निबोध यथातथम् ॥९॥
आत्मनः स्तवसंयुक्तं तन्निबोध यथातथम् ॥९॥
9. yattu vidvanpravakṣyāmi pratyayārthamahaṁ tava ,
ātmanaḥ stavasaṁyuktaṁ tannibodha yathātatham.

yat tu vidvan pravakṣyāmi pratyayārtham aham tava
ātmanaḥ stavasaṃyuktam tat nibodha yathātatham
ātmanaḥ stavasaṃyuktam tat nibodha yathātatham
9.
tu vidvan,
yat ātmanaḥ stavasaṃyuktam (vākyam),
aham tava pratyayārtham pravakṣyāmi,
tat yathātatham nibodha
yat ātmanaḥ stavasaṃyuktam (vākyam),
aham tava pratyayārtham pravakṣyāmi,
tat yathātatham nibodha
9.
But O learned one, I will declare to you, for the sake of your conviction, that which consists of self-praise; understand that truly, as it actually is.
अहं शक्रस्य सारथ्ये योग्यो मातलिवत्प्रभो ।
अप्रमादप्रयोगाच्च ज्ञानविद्याचिकित्सितैः ॥१०॥
अप्रमादप्रयोगाच्च ज्ञानविद्याचिकित्सितैः ॥१०॥
10. ahaṁ śakrasya sārathye yogyo mātalivatprabho ,
apramādaprayogācca jñānavidyācikitsitaiḥ.

aham śakrasya sāratthye yogyaḥ mātali-vat prabho
apramādaprayogāt ca jñānavidyācikitsitaiḥ

aham śakrasya sāratthye mātali-vat yogyaḥ,
ca apramādaprayogāt jñānavidyācikitsitaiḥ (ca yogyo 'smi)
aham śakrasya sāratthye mātali-vat yogyaḥ,
ca apramādaprayogāt jñānavidyācikitsitaiḥ (ca yogyo 'smi)
10.
O Lord, I am capable of charioteering for Indra, just like Mātali, due to my diligent application and my knowledge, skill, and (use of) remedies.
ततः पार्थेन संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य तेऽनघ ।
वाहयिष्यामि तुरगान्विज्वरो भव सूतज ॥११॥

11. tataḥ pārthena saṁgrāme yudhyamānasya te'nagha ,
vāhayiṣyāmi turagānvijvaro bhava sūtaja.

vāhayiṣyāmi turagān vijvaraḥ bhava sūta-ja

tataḥ anagha sūta-ja,
saṃgrāme pārthena yudhyamānasya te turagān aham vāhayiṣyāmi; (tvam) vijvaraḥ bhava
saṃgrāme pārthena yudhyamānasya te turagān aham vāhayiṣyāmi; (tvam) vijvaraḥ bhava
11.
Therefore, O sinless one, I will drive your horses while you are fighting in battle with Arjuna. Be free from anxiety, O son of a charioteer (sūtaja).
