मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततस्तां भर्तृशोकार्तां दीनां मलिनवाससम् ।
मणिशेषाभ्यलंकारां रुदतीं च पतिव्रताम् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tatastāṁ bhartṛśokārtāṁ dīnāṁ malinavāsasam ,
maṇiśeṣābhyalaṁkārāṁ rudatīṁ ca pativratām.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, (Rāvaṇa saw) her, who was suffering greatly from grief for her husband, looking miserable, wearing dirty clothes, with only a few jewels remaining as ornaments, weeping, and steadfast in her devotion as a chaste wife.
राक्षसीभिरुपास्यन्तीं समासीनां शिलातले ।
रावणः कामबाणार्तो ददर्शोपससर्प च ॥२॥
2. rākṣasībhirupāsyantīṁ samāsīnāṁ śilātale ,
rāvaṇaḥ kāmabāṇārto dadarśopasasarpa ca.
2. rākṣasībhiḥ upāsyantīm samāsīnām śilātale
rāvaṇaḥ kāmabāṇārtaḥ dadarśa upasasarpa ca
2. (He saw her) being attended by demonesses and seated on a rock slab. Rāvaṇa, tormented by the arrows of the god of love (Kāma), then saw her and approached.
देवदानवगन्धर्वयक्षकिंपुरुषैर्युधि ।
अजितोऽशोकवनिकां ययौ कन्दर्पमोहितः ॥३॥
3. devadānavagandharvayakṣakiṁpuruṣairyudhi ,
ajito'śokavanikāṁ yayau kandarpamohitaḥ.
3. deva-dānava-gandharva-yakṣa-kiṃpuruṣaiḥ yudhi
ajitaḥ aśokavanikām yayau kandarpamohitaḥ
3. Though unconquered in battle by gods, dānavas, gandharvas, yakṣas, and kiṃpuruṣas, (Rāvaṇa) went to the Aśoka grove, utterly deluded by the god of love (Kandarpa).
दिव्याम्बरधरः श्रीमान्सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलः ।
विचित्रमाल्यमुकुटो वसन्त इव मूर्तिमान् ॥४॥
4. divyāmbaradharaḥ śrīmānsumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalaḥ ,
vicitramālyamukuṭo vasanta iva mūrtimān.
4. divyāmbaradharaḥ śrīmān sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalaḥ
vicitramālyamukuṭaḥ vasantaḥ iva mūrtimān
4. (Rāvaṇa appeared) wearing divine garments, glorious, with brightly polished jewel-earrings, and a crown adorned with variegated garlands, as if the spring season (vasanta) itself had taken a physical form.
स कल्पवृक्षसदृशो यत्नादपि विभूषितः ।
श्मशानचैत्यद्रुमवद्भूषितोऽपि भयंकरः ॥५॥
5. sa kalpavṛkṣasadṛśo yatnādapi vibhūṣitaḥ ,
śmaśānacaityadrumavadbhūṣito'pi bhayaṁkaraḥ.
5. saḥ kalpavṛkṣasadṛśaḥ yatnāt api vibhūṣitaḥ
śmaśānacaityadrumavat bhūṣitaḥ api bhayaṅkaraḥ
5. Even though he was adorned with great effort, resembling a wish-fulfilling tree (kalpavṛkṣa), he remained terrifying, much like a tree in a cremation ground (śmaśāna-caitya-druma), despite being adorned.
स तस्यास्तनुमध्यायाः समीपे रजनीचरः ।
ददृशे रोहिणीमेत्य शनैश्चर इव ग्रहः ॥६॥
6. sa tasyāstanumadhyāyāḥ samīpe rajanīcaraḥ ,
dadṛśe rohiṇīmetya śanaiścara iva grahaḥ.
6. saḥ tasyāḥ tanumadhyāyāḥ samīpe rajanīcaraḥ
dadṛśe rohiṇīm etya śanaiścaraḥ iva grahaḥ
6. That night-wanderer (rajanīcara) was seen near the slender-waisted one, like the planet Saturn (Śanaiścara) approaching the star Rohiṇī.
स तामामन्त्र्य सुश्रोणीं पुष्पकेतुशराहतः ।
इदमित्यब्रवीद्बालां त्रस्तां रौहीमिवाबलाम् ॥७॥
7. sa tāmāmantrya suśroṇīṁ puṣpaketuśarāhataḥ ,
idamityabravīdbālāṁ trastāṁ rauhīmivābalām.
7. saḥ tām āmantrya suśroṇīm puṣpaketušarāhataḥ
idam iti abravīt bālām trastām rauhīm iva abalām
7. Struck by the arrows of the god of love (Puṣpaketu), he addressed that beautiful-hipped young woman, who was terrified and helpless like Rohiṇī, and spoke to her thus.
सीते पर्याप्तमेतावत्कृतो भर्तुरनुग्रहः ।
प्रसादं कुरु तन्वङ्गि क्रियतां परिकर्म ते ॥८॥
8. sīte paryāptametāvatkṛto bharturanugrahaḥ ,
prasādaṁ kuru tanvaṅgi kriyatāṁ parikarma te.
8. sīte paryāptam etāvat kṛtaḥ bhartuḥ anugrahaḥ
prasādam kuru tanvaṅgi kriyatām parikarma te
8. Sītā, this much devotion (anugraha) to your husband is sufficient. O slender-limbed one, show your grace (prasāda), and let my service (parikarma) be rendered to you.
भजस्व मां वरारोहे महार्हाभरणाम्बरा ।
भव मे सर्वनारीणामुत्तमा वरवर्णिनि ॥९॥
9. bhajasva māṁ varārohe mahārhābharaṇāmbarā ,
bhava me sarvanārīṇāmuttamā varavarṇini.
9. bhajasva mām varārohe mahārhābharaṇāmbarā
bhava me sarvanārīṇām uttamā varavarṇini
9. O lady with beautiful hips, adorned with costly ornaments and garments, devote yourself to me. O lady of beautiful complexion, be the foremost among all my women.
सन्ति मे देवकन्याश्च राजर्षीणां तथाङ्गनाः ।
सन्ति दानवकन्याश्च दैत्यानां चापि योषितः ॥१०॥
10. santi me devakanyāśca rājarṣīṇāṁ tathāṅganāḥ ,
santi dānavakanyāśca daityānāṁ cāpi yoṣitaḥ.
10. santi me devakanyāḥ ca rājarṣīṇām tathā aṅganāḥ
santi dānavakanyāḥ ca daityānām ca api yoṣitaḥ
10. I possess celestial maidens, and similarly, women from royal sages. There are also daughters of Dānavas and women of Daityas who belong to me.
चतुर्दश पिशाचानां कोट्यो मे वचने स्थिताः ।
द्विस्तावत्पुरुषादानां रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम् ॥११॥
11. caturdaśa piśācānāṁ koṭyo me vacane sthitāḥ ,
dvistāvatpuruṣādānāṁ rakṣasāṁ bhīmakarmaṇām.
11. caturdaśa piśācānām koṭyaḥ me vacane sthitāḥ
dviḥ tāvat puruṣādānām rakṣasām bhīmakarmaṇām
11. Fourteen crores (140 million) of Piśācas (ghouls) are subject to my command. Twice that many Rākṣasas (demons) who devour humans and perform terrible deeds are also at my beck and call.
ततो मे त्रिगुणा यक्षा ये मद्वचनकारिणः ।
केचिदेव धनाध्यक्षं भ्रातरं मे समाश्रिताः ॥१२॥
12. tato me triguṇā yakṣā ye madvacanakāriṇaḥ ,
kecideva dhanādhyakṣaṁ bhrātaraṁ me samāśritāḥ.
12. tataḥ me triguṇā yakṣāḥ ye madvacanakāriṇaḥ
kecit eva dhanādhyakṣam bhrātaram me samāśritāḥ
12. Furthermore, I command three times that number of Yakṣas who are subservient to my word. Some of them, however, are dependent on my brother, the treasurer (Kubera).
गन्धर्वाप्सरसो भद्रे मामापानगतं सदा ।
उपतिष्ठन्ति वामोरु यथैव भ्रातरं मम ॥१३॥
13. gandharvāpsaraso bhadre māmāpānagataṁ sadā ,
upatiṣṭhanti vāmoru yathaiva bhrātaraṁ mama.
13. gandharvāpsarasaḥ bhadre mām āpānagatam sadā
upatiṣṭhanti vāmorū yatha eva bhrātaram mama
13. O auspicious one, O beautiful-thighed one, Gandharvas and Apsaras always attend to me when I am at a drinking assembly, just as they attend to my brother.
पुत्रोऽहमपि विप्रर्षेः साक्षाद्विश्रवसो मुनेः ।
पञ्चमो लोकपालानामिति मे प्रथितं यशः ॥१४॥
14. putro'hamapi viprarṣeḥ sākṣādviśravaso muneḥ ,
pañcamo lokapālānāmiti me prathitaṁ yaśaḥ.
14. putraḥ aham api viprarṣeḥ sākṣāt viśravasaḥ
muneḥ pañcamaḥ lokapālānām iti me prathitam yaśaḥ
14. I am also directly the son of the Brahmin sage (viprarṣi) Vishravas (muni). Thus, my fame (yaśas) as the fifth among the guardians of the world (lokapāla) is well-established.
दिव्यानि भक्ष्यभोज्यानि पानानि विविधानि च ।
यथैव त्रिदशेशस्य तथैव मम भामिनि ॥१५॥
15. divyāni bhakṣyabhojyāni pānāni vividhāni ca ,
yathaiva tridaśeśasya tathaiva mama bhāmini.
15. divyāni bhakṣyabhojyāni pānāni vividhāni ca
yatha eva tridaśeśasya tatha eva mama bhāmini
15. O lustrous one, just as the lord of the gods (tridaśeśa) possesses divine edibles, foods, and various drinks, so do I.
क्षीयतां दुष्कृतं कर्म वनवासकृतं तव ।
भार्या मे भव सुश्रोणि यथा मन्दोदरी तथा ॥१६॥
16. kṣīyatāṁ duṣkṛtaṁ karma vanavāsakṛtaṁ tava ,
bhāryā me bhava suśroṇi yathā mandodarī tathā.
16. kṣīyatām duṣkṛtam karma vanavāsakṛtam tava
bhāryā me bhava suśroṇi yathā mandodarī tathā
16. Let your evil (duṣkṛta) karma (karma) accumulated during your forest exile be destroyed. O beautiful-hipped one, become my wife, just as Mandodari is.
इत्युक्ता तेन वैदेही परिवृत्य शुभानना ।
तृणमन्तरतः कृत्वा तमुवाच निशाचरम् ॥१७॥
17. ityuktā tena vaidehī parivṛtya śubhānanā ,
tṛṇamantarataḥ kṛtvā tamuvāca niśācaram.
17. iti uktā tena vaidehī parivṛtya śubhānanā
tṛṇam antaratas kṛtvā tam uvāca niśācaram
17. Having been addressed thus by him, the beautiful-faced Vaidehi (Sītā), turning away and placing a blade of grass between them, spoke to that night-roaming demon (Rāvaṇa).
अशिवेनातिवामोरूरजस्रं नेत्रवारिणा ।
स्तनावपतितौ बाला सहितावभिवर्षती ।
उवाच वाक्यं तं क्षुद्रं वैदेही पतिदेवता ॥१८॥
18. aśivenātivāmorūrajasraṁ netravāriṇā ,
stanāvapatitau bālā sahitāvabhivarṣatī ,
uvāca vākyaṁ taṁ kṣudraṁ vaidehī patidevatā.
18. aśivena ativāmorūḥ ajasram
netravāriṇā stanau apatitau bālā
sahitau abhivṛṣatī uvāca vākyam
tam kṣudram vaidehī patidevatā
18. The young woman (Sītā), beautiful-thighed and with her husband as her sole deity, continuously showered her two breasts with inauspicious tears that fell upon them. She then spoke these words to that despicable demon.
असकृद्वदतो वाक्यमीदृशं राक्षसेश्वर ।
विषादयुक्तमेतत्ते मया श्रुतमभाग्यया ॥१९॥
19. asakṛdvadato vākyamīdṛśaṁ rākṣaseśvara ,
viṣādayuktametatte mayā śrutamabhāgyayā.
19. asakṛt vadataḥ vākyam īdṛśam rākṣaseśvara
viṣādayuktam etat te mayā śrutam abhāgyayā
19. O lord of demons, I, an unfortunate woman, have repeatedly heard such lamentable words spoken by you.
तद्भद्रसुख भद्रं ते मानसं विनिवर्त्यताम् ।
परदारास्म्यलभ्या च सततं च पतिव्रता ॥२०॥
20. tadbhadrasukha bhadraṁ te mānasaṁ vinivartyatām ,
paradārāsmyalabhyā ca satataṁ ca pativratā.
20. tat bhadrasukha bhadram te mānasam vinivartyatām
paradārā asmi alabhyā ca satatam ca pativratā
20. Therefore, O good sir, may good fortune be with you; let your mind and intention be turned back (from this desire). I am another's wife and unattainable, for I am always devoted to my husband.
न चैवोपयिकी भार्या मानुषी कृपणा तव ।
विवशां धर्षयित्वा च कां त्वं प्रीतिमवाप्स्यसि ॥२१॥
21. na caivopayikī bhāryā mānuṣī kṛpaṇā tava ,
vivaśāṁ dharṣayitvā ca kāṁ tvaṁ prītimavāpsyasi.
21. na ca eva upayikī bhāryā mānuṣī kṛpaṇā tava
vivaśām dharṣayitvā ca kām tvam prītim avāpsyasi
21. This miserable human woman is certainly not a suitable wife for you. What satisfaction will you gain by violating a helpless woman?
प्रजापतिसमो विप्रो ब्रह्मयोनिः पिता तव ।
न च पालयसे धर्मं लोकपालसमः कथम् ॥२२॥
22. prajāpatisamo vipro brahmayoniḥ pitā tava ,
na ca pālayase dharmaṁ lokapālasamaḥ katham.
22. prajāpatisamaḥ vipraḥ brahmayoniḥ pitā tava
na ca pālayase dharmam lokapālasamaḥ katham
22. Your father is a Brahmin, equal to Prajāpati, a source of sacred knowledge. How can you, being like a guardian of the world, not uphold your natural law (dharma)?
भ्रातरं राजराजानं महेश्वरसखं प्रभुम् ।
धनेश्वरं व्यपदिशन्कथं त्विह न लज्जसे ॥२३॥
23. bhrātaraṁ rājarājānaṁ maheśvarasakhaṁ prabhum ,
dhaneśvaraṁ vyapadiśankathaṁ tviha na lajjase.
23. bhrātaram rājarājānam maheśvarasakham prabhum
dhaneśvaram vyapadiśan katham tu iha na lajjase
23. How are you not ashamed here, claiming your brother to be the king of kings, the friend of Maheśvara, the lord, the lord of wealth (Kubera)?
इत्युक्त्वा प्रारुदत्सीता कम्पयन्ती पयोधरौ ।
शिरोधरां च तन्वङ्गी मुखं प्रच्छाद्य वाससा ॥२४॥
24. ityuktvā prārudatsītā kampayantī payodharau ,
śirodharāṁ ca tanvaṅgī mukhaṁ pracchādya vāsasā.
24. iti uktvā pra arudat sītā kampayantī payodharau
śirodharām ca tanvaṅgī mukham pracchādya vāsasā
24. Having spoken thus, the slender-limbed Sītā began to cry, her breasts and neck trembling, as she covered her face with her garment.
तस्या रुदत्या भामिन्या दीर्घा वेणी सुसंयता ।
ददृशे स्वसिता स्निग्धा काली व्यालीव मूर्धनि ॥२५॥
25. tasyā rudatyā bhāminyā dīrghā veṇī susaṁyatā ,
dadṛśe svasitā snigdhā kālī vyālīva mūrdhani.
25. tasyāḥ rudatyāḥ bhāminyāḥ dīrghā veṇī susaṃyatā
dadṛśe svasitā snigdhā kālī vyālī iva mūrdhani
25. As that weeping, passionate woman, her long, well-bound, dark, glossy, black braid was seen on her head, resembling a female serpent.
तच्छ्रुत्वा रावणो वाक्यं सीतयोक्तं सुनिष्ठुरम् ।
प्रत्याख्यातोऽपि दुर्मेधाः पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वचः ॥२६॥
26. tacchrutvā rāvaṇo vākyaṁ sītayoktaṁ suniṣṭhuram ,
pratyākhyāto'pi durmedhāḥ punarevābravīdvacaḥ.
26. tat śrutvā rāvaṇaḥ vākyam sītayā uktam suniṣṭhuram
pratyākhyātaḥ api durmedhāḥ punaḥ eva abravīt vacaḥ
26. Having heard that exceedingly harsh speech spoken by Sītā, Rāvaṇa, despite being rejected, the foolish one, spoke again.
काममङ्गानि मे सीते दुनोतु मकरध्वजः ।
न त्वामकामां सुश्रोणीं समेष्ये चारुहासिनीम् ॥२७॥
27. kāmamaṅgāni me sīte dunotu makaradhvajaḥ ,
na tvāmakāmāṁ suśroṇīṁ sameṣye cāruhāsinīm.
27. kāmam aṅgāni me sīte dunotu makaradhvajaḥ
na tvām akāmām suśroṇīm sameṣye cāruhāsinīm
27. O Sītā, let Kāmadeva (makaradhvaja) torment my body as he pleases. I will not approach you, who are unwilling, O beautiful-hipped, sweetly-smiling one.
किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यत्त्वमद्यापि मानुषम् ।
आहारभूतमस्माकं राममेवानुरुध्यसे ॥२८॥
28. kiṁ nu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ yattvamadyāpi mānuṣam ,
āhārabhūtamasmākaṁ rāmamevānurudhyase.
28. kim nu śakyam mayā kartum yat tvam adya api
mānuṣam āhāra-bhūtam asmākam rāmam eva anurudhyase
28. What indeed can I do, since you still, even today, cling only to Rāma, a human who is mere food for us?
इत्युक्त्वा तामनिन्द्याङ्गीं स राक्षसगणेश्वरः ।
तत्रैवान्तर्हितो भूत्वा जगामाभिमतां दिशम् ॥२९॥
29. ityuktvā tāmanindyāṅgīṁ sa rākṣasagaṇeśvaraḥ ,
tatraivāntarhito bhūtvā jagāmābhimatāṁ diśam.
29. iti uktvā tām anindyāṅgīm saḥ rākṣasagaṇeśvaraḥ
tatra eva antarhitaḥ bhūtvā jagāma abhimatām diśam
29. Having spoken thus to her of flawless form, he, the lord of the demon host, then and there disappeared and departed in his desired direction.
राक्षसीभिः परिवृता वैदेही शोककर्शिता ।
सेव्यमाना त्रिजटया तत्रैव न्यवसत्तदा ॥३०॥
30. rākṣasībhiḥ parivṛtā vaidehī śokakarśitā ,
sevyamānā trijaṭayā tatraiva nyavasattadā.
30. rākṣasībhiḥ parivṛtā vaidehī śokakarśitā
sevyamānā trijaṭayā tatra eva nyavasat tadā
30. Vaidehī (Sītā), surrounded by demonesses and wasted away by grief, was attended by Trijatā and resided there at that time.
