युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
आमन्त्रयामि भरतांस्तथा वृद्धं पितामहम् ।
राजानं सोमदत्तं च महाराजं च बाह्लिकम् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
āmantrayāmi bharatāṁstathā vṛddhaṁ pitāmaham ,
rājānaṁ somadattaṁ ca mahārājaṁ ca bāhlikam.

1. Yudhishthira said: 'I am inviting the Bharatas, as well as the aged grandfather, King Somadatta, and the great king Bahlika.'
द्रोणं कृपं नृपांश्चान्यानश्वत्थामानमेव च ।
विदुरं धृतराष्ट्रं च धार्तराष्ट्रांश्च सर्वशः ॥२॥
2. droṇaṁ kṛpaṁ nṛpāṁścānyānaśvatthāmānameva ca ,
viduraṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca dhārtarāṣṭrāṁśca sarvaśaḥ.
2. droṇam kṛpam nṛpān ca anyān aśvatthāmānam eva ca
viduram dhṛtarāṣṭram ca dhārtarāṣṭrān ca sarvaśaḥ
2. Drona, Kripa, and other kings, and indeed Ashwatthama, Vidura, Dhritarashtra, and all the Dhritarashtras (sons of Dhritarashtra).
युयुत्सुं संजयं चैव तथैवान्यान्सभासदः ।
सर्वानामन्त्र्य गच्छामि द्रष्टास्मि पुनरेत्य वः ॥३॥
3. yuyutsuṁ saṁjayaṁ caiva tathaivānyānsabhāsadaḥ ,
sarvānāmantrya gacchāmi draṣṭāsmi punaretya vaḥ.
3. yuyutsum saṃjayam ca eva tathā eva anyān sabhāsadaḥ
sarvān āmantrya gacchāmi draṣṭṛ asmi punaḥ etya vaḥ
3. Yuyutsu, Sanjaya, and similarly, all other members of the assembly. Having addressed them all, I depart; I shall see you again upon my return.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
न च किंचित्तदोचुस्ते ह्रिया सन्तो युधिष्ठिरम् ।
मनोभिरेव कल्याणं दध्युस्ते तस्य धीमतः ॥४॥
4. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
na ca kiṁcittadocuste hriyā santo yudhiṣṭhiram ,
manobhireva kalyāṇaṁ dadhyuste tasya dhīmataḥ.

tadā ūcuḥ te hriyā santaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiram | manobhiḥ eva
kalyāṇaṃ dadhyuḥ te tasya dhīmataḥ
4. Vaiśampāyana said: Ashamed, they said nothing to Yudhiṣṭhira then. They only thought of the well-being of that wise one in their minds.
विदुर उवाच ।
आर्या पृथा राजपुत्री नारण्यं गन्तुमर्हति ।
सुकुमारी च वृद्धा च नित्यं चैव सुखोचिता ॥५॥
5. vidura uvāca ,
āryā pṛthā rājaputrī nāraṇyaṁ gantumarhati ,
sukumārī ca vṛddhā ca nityaṁ caiva sukhocitā.
5. vidura uvāca | āryā pṛthā rājaputrī na araṇyam gantum
arhati | sukumārī ca vṛddhā ca nityam ca eva sukhocitā
5. Vidura said: The venerable Pṛthā, the princess, should not go to the forest. She is delicate and aged, and always accustomed to comfort.
इह वत्स्यति कल्याणी सत्कृता मम वेश्मनि ।
इति पार्था विजानीध्वमगदं वोऽस्तु सर्वशः ॥६॥
6. iha vatsyati kalyāṇī satkṛtā mama veśmani ,
iti pārthā vijānīdhvamagadaṁ vo'stu sarvaśaḥ.
6. iha vatsyati kalyāṇī satkṛtā mama veśmani |
iti pārthā vijānīdhvam agadam vaḥ astu sarvaśaḥ
6. The auspicious one will dwell here, honored in my house. O sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas), know this. May you all be completely free from harm.
युधिष्ठिर विजानीहि ममेदं भरतर्षभ ।
नाधर्मेण जितः कश्चिद्व्यथते वै पराजयात् ॥७॥
7. yudhiṣṭhira vijānīhi mamedaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
nādharmeṇa jitaḥ kaścidvyathate vai parājayāt.
7. yudhiṣṭhira vijānīhi mama idam bharatarṣabha |
na adharmeṇa jitaḥ kaścit vyathate vai parājayāt
7. Yudhiṣṭhira, O best of Bharatas, understand this, which is my view: no one who has been conquered by unrighteousness (adharma) is troubled by such a defeat.
त्वं वै धर्मान्विजानीषे युधां वेत्ता धनंजयः ।
हन्तारीणां भीमसेनो नकुलस्त्वर्थसंग्रही ॥८॥
8. tvaṁ vai dharmānvijānīṣe yudhāṁ vettā dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
hantārīṇāṁ bhīmaseno nakulastvarthasaṁgrahī.
8. tvam vai dharmān vijānīṣe yudhām vettā dhanañjayaḥ
hantā arīṇām bhīmasenaḥ nakulaḥ tu artha-saṅgrahī
8. You indeed understand the principles (dharma). Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) is a master of warfare. Bhīmasena is the destroyer of enemies, while Nakula is an accumulator of resources.
संयन्ता सहदेवस्तु धौम्यो ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः ।
धर्मार्थकुशला चैव द्रौपदी धर्मचारिणी ॥९॥
9. saṁyantā sahadevastu dhaumyo brahmaviduttamaḥ ,
dharmārthakuśalā caiva draupadī dharmacāriṇī.
9. saṃyantā sahadevaḥ tu dhaumyaḥ brahma-vit-uttamaḥ
dharma-artha-kuśalā ca eva draupadī dharma-cāriṇī
9. Sahadeva, however, is a master of self-control. Dhaumya is the foremost knower of the ultimate reality (brahman). And Draupadī, who observes her (dharma), is skilled in both righteousness (dharma) and material prosperity.
अन्योन्यस्य प्रियाः सर्वे तथैव प्रियवादिनः ।
परैरभेद्याः संतुष्टाः को वो न स्पृहयेदिह ॥१०॥
10. anyonyasya priyāḥ sarve tathaiva priyavādinaḥ ,
parairabhedyāḥ saṁtuṣṭāḥ ko vo na spṛhayediha.
10. anyonya-asya priyāḥ sarve tathā eva priya-vādinaḥ
paraiḥ abhedyāḥ saṃtuṣṭāḥ kaḥ vaḥ na spṛhayet iha
10. All of them are dear to one another, and likewise, they speak kindly. They are impenetrable to others and are content. Who here would not envy them?
एष वै सर्वकल्याणः समाधिस्तव भारत ।
नैनं शत्रुर्विषहते शक्रेणापि समोऽच्युत ॥११॥
11. eṣa vai sarvakalyāṇaḥ samādhistava bhārata ,
nainaṁ śatrurviṣahate śakreṇāpi samo'cyuta.
11. eṣaḥ vai sarva-kalyāṇaḥ samādhiḥ tava bhārata na
enam śatruḥ viṣahate śakreṇa api samaḥ acyuta
11. O Bhārata (Yudhiṣṭhira), this entire situation is indeed auspicious, as is your profound composure (samādhi). No enemy can overpower it, not even one equal to Indra, O Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa).
हिमवत्यनुशिष्टोऽसि मेरुसावर्णिना पुरा ।
द्वैपायनेन कृष्णेन नगरे वारणावते ॥१२॥
12. himavatyanuśiṣṭo'si merusāvarṇinā purā ,
dvaipāyanena kṛṣṇena nagare vāraṇāvate.
12. himavati anuśiṣṭaḥ asi merusāvarṇinā purā
dvaipāyanena kṛṣṇena nagare vāraṇāvate
12. You were instructed in the Himalayas by Merusāvarṇin in the past, and by Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana in the city of Vāraṇāvata.
भृगुतुङ्गे च रामेण दृषद्वत्यां च शंभुना ।
अश्रौषीरसितस्यापि महर्षेरञ्जनं प्रति ॥१३॥
13. bhṛgutuṅge ca rāmeṇa dṛṣadvatyāṁ ca śaṁbhunā ,
aśrauṣīrasitasyāpi maharṣerañjanaṁ prati.
13. bhṛgutuṅge ca rāmeṇa dṛṣadvatyām ca śaṃbhunā
aśrauṣīḥ asitasya api maharṣeḥ añjanam prati
13. You were also instructed at Bhṛgutuṅga by Rāma and at Dṛṣadvatī by Śambhu. Moreover, you heard the teaching of the great sage Asita concerning Añjana.
द्रष्टा सदा नारदस्य धौम्यस्तेऽयं पुरोहितः ।
मा हार्षीः सांपराये त्वं बुद्धिं तामृषिपूजिताम् ॥१४॥
14. draṣṭā sadā nāradasya dhaumyaste'yaṁ purohitaḥ ,
mā hārṣīḥ sāṁparāye tvaṁ buddhiṁ tāmṛṣipūjitām.
14. draṣṭā sadā nāradasya dhaumyaḥ te ayam purohitaḥ
mā hārṣīḥ sāmparāye tvam buddhim tām ṛṣipūjitām
14. This Dhaumya, your family priest (purohita), always communes with Nārada. Do not lose that intellect (buddhi), revered by sages, in this critical juncture (sāmparāya).
पुरूरवसमैलं त्वं बुद्ध्या जयसि पाण्डव ।
शक्त्या जयसि राज्ञोऽन्यानृषीन्धर्मोपसेवया ॥१५॥
15. purūravasamailaṁ tvaṁ buddhyā jayasi pāṇḍava ,
śaktyā jayasi rājño'nyānṛṣīndharmopasevayā.
15. purūravasam ailam tvam buddhyā jayasi pāṇḍava
śaktyā jayasi rājñaḥ anyān ṛṣīn dharmopasevayā
15. O Pāṇḍava, you surpass Purūravas, the son of Ilā, through your intellect (buddhi). You overcome other kings by your might (śakti) and sages through your adherence to natural law (dharma).
ऐन्द्रे जये धृतमना याम्ये कोपविधारणे ।
विसर्गे चैव कौबेरे वारुणे चैव संयमे ॥१६॥
16. aindre jaye dhṛtamanā yāmye kopavidhāraṇe ,
visarge caiva kaubere vāruṇe caiva saṁyame.
16. aindre jaye dhṛtamanā yāmye kopavidhāraṇe
visarge ca eva kaubere vāruṇe ca eva saṃyame
16. One's mind should be fixed on victory (jaya) in the manner of Indra, on restraining anger in the manner of Yama, on generosity in the manner of Kubera, and also on self-control (saṃyama) in the manner of Varuna.
आत्मप्रदानं सौम्यत्वमद्भ्यश्चैवोपजीवनम् ।
भूमेः क्षमा च तेजश्च समग्रं सूर्यमण्डलात् ॥१७॥
17. ātmapradānaṁ saumyatvamadbhyaścaivopajīvanam ,
bhūmeḥ kṣamā ca tejaśca samagraṁ sūryamaṇḍalāt.
17. ātmapradānam saumyatvam adbhyaḥ ca eva upajīvanam
bhūmeḥ kṣamā ca tejaḥ ca samagram sūryamaṇḍalāt
17. Self-giving (ātmapradāna), gentleness (saumyatva), and sustenance (upajīvana) [should be derived] from the waters (adbhyaḥ); patience (kṣamā) from the earth (bhūmi); and complete splendor (tejas) from the sun's disk (sūryamaṇḍala).
वायोर्बलं विद्धि स त्वं भूतेभ्यश्चात्मसंभवम् ।
अगदं वोऽस्तु भद्रं वो द्रक्ष्यामि पुनरागतान् ॥१८॥
18. vāyorbalaṁ viddhi sa tvaṁ bhūtebhyaścātmasaṁbhavam ,
agadaṁ vo'stu bhadraṁ vo drakṣyāmi punarāgatān.
18. vāyoḥ balam viddhi sa tvam bhūtebhyaḥ ca ātmasaṃbhavam
agadam vaḥ astu bhadram vaḥ drakṣyāmi punarāgatān
18. Know, O you, the strength (bala) of the wind (vāyu) and self-origination (ātmasaṃbhava) from all beings (bhūta). May you be free from illness; may good fortune be yours; I shall see you again upon your return.
आपद्धर्मार्थकृच्छ्रेषु सर्वकार्येषु वा पुनः ।
यथावत्प्रतिपद्येथाः काले काले युधिष्ठिर ॥१९॥
19. āpaddharmārthakṛcchreṣu sarvakāryeṣu vā punaḥ ,
yathāvatpratipadyethāḥ kāle kāle yudhiṣṭhira.
19. āpaddharmārthakṛcchreṣu sarvakāryeṣu vā punaḥ
yathāvat pratipadyethāḥ kāle kāle yudhiṣṭhira
19. O Yudhishthira, in times of calamity, in difficulties concerning natural law (dharma) and wealth (artha), or indeed in all matters, you should always act appropriately.
आपृष्टोऽसीह कौन्तेय स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि भारत ।
कृतार्थं स्वस्तिमन्तं त्वां द्रक्ष्यामः पुनरागतम् ॥२०॥
20. āpṛṣṭo'sīha kaunteya svasti prāpnuhi bhārata ,
kṛtārthaṁ svastimantaṁ tvāṁ drakṣyāmaḥ punarāgatam.
20. āpṛṣṭaḥ asi iha kaunteya svasti prāpnuhi bhārata
kṛtārtham svastimantam tvām drakṣyāmaḥ punaḥ āgatam
20. You have been questioned here, O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata); may you attain well-being. We shall see you again when you return, having achieved your objective and being prosperous.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा पाण्डवः सत्यविक्रमः ।
भीष्मद्रोणौ नमस्कृत्य प्रातिष्ठत युधिष्ठिरः ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastathetyuktvā pāṇḍavaḥ satyavikramaḥ ,
bhīṣmadroṇau namaskṛtya prātiṣṭhata yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
21. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ tathā iti uktvā pāṇḍavaḥ
satyavikramaḥ bhīṣmadroṇau namaskṛtya prātiṣṭhata yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
21. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed, Yudhiṣṭhira, the Pāṇḍava known for his true valor, saying 'so be it,' bowed to Bhīṣma and Droṇa and then departed.
