तत्राकरोद्दुष्करं राजपुत्रो दुःशासनस्तुमुले युध्यमानः ।
चिच्छेद भीमस्य धनुः क्षुरेण षड्भिः शरैः सारथिमप्यविध्यत् ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: In that fierce battle, Prince Duḥśāsana, fighting valiantly, accomplished a formidable task. He cut Bhima's bow with a razor-sharp arrow and also pierced his charioteer with six arrows.
ततोऽभिनद्बहुभिः क्षिप्रमेव वरेषुभिर्भीमसेनं महात्मा ।
स विक्षरन्नाग इव प्रभिन्नो गदामस्मै तुमुले प्राहिणोद्वै ॥२॥
2. tato'bhinadbahubhiḥ kṣiprameva; vareṣubhirbhīmasenaṁ mahātmā ,
sa vikṣarannāga iva prabhinno; gadāmasmai tumule prāhiṇodvai.
2. tataḥ abhinat bahubhiḥ kṣipram eva
vara-iṣubhiḥ bhīmasenam mahātmā
saḥ vikṣaran nāgaḥ iva prabhinnaḥ
gadām asmai tumule prāhiṇot vai

2. Then, the great-souled (mahātmā) prince swiftly pierced Bhimasena with many excellent arrows. Bhima, profusely bleeding like an elephant in rut, then hurled a mace at him in that fierce battle.
तयाहरद्दश धन्वन्तराणि दुःशासनं भीमसेनः प्रसह्य ।
तया हतः पतितो वेपमानो दुःशासनो गदया वेगवत्या ॥३॥
3. tayāharaddaśa dhanvantarāṇi; duḥśāsanaṁ bhīmasenaḥ prasahya ,
tayā hataḥ patito vepamāno; duḥśāsano gadayā vegavatyā.

3. With that (mace), Bhimasena forcibly drove Duḥśāsana back ten bow-lengths. Struck by that swift mace, Duḥśāsana fell, trembling.
हयाः ससूताश्च हता नरेन्द्र चूर्णीकृतश्चास्य रथः पतन्त्या ।
विध्वस्तवर्माभरणाम्बरस्रग्विचेष्टमानो भृशवेदनार्तः ॥४॥
4. hayāḥ sasūtāśca hatā narendra; cūrṇīkṛtaścāsya rathaḥ patantyā ,
vidhvastavarmābharaṇāmbarasra;gviceṣṭamāno bhṛśavedanārtaḥ.

4. O king, his horses, along with their charioteer, were slain, and his chariot was utterly crushed. He, with his armor, ornaments, garments, and garland shattered, lay on the ground, struggling and intensely afflicted by pain.
ततः स्मृत्वा भीमसेनस्तरस्वी सापत्नकं यत्प्रयुक्तं सुतैस्ते ।
रथादवप्लुत्य गतः स भूमौ यत्नेन तस्मिन्प्रणिधाय चक्षुः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ smṛtvā bhīmasenastarasvī; sāpatnakaṁ yatprayuktaṁ sutaiste ,
rathādavaplutya gataḥ sa bhūmau; yatnena tasminpraṇidhāya cakṣuḥ.
5. tataḥ smṛtvā bhīmasenaḥ tarasvī
sāpatnakam yat prayuktam sutaiḥ te
rathāt avaplutya gataḥ saḥ bhūmau
yatnena tasmin praṇidhāya cakṣuḥ

rathāt avaplutya tasmin cakṣuḥ

5. Then, the energetic Bhimasena, recalling the hostility (sāpatnaka) perpetrated by your (Dhritarashtra's) sons, leaped from his chariot. He went to the ground, fixing his gaze upon Jayadratha with great effort.
असिं समुद्धृत्य शितं सुधारं कण्ठे समाक्रम्य च वेपमानम् ।
उत्कृत्य वक्षः पतितस्य भूमावथापिबच्छोणितमस्य कोष्णम् ।
आस्वाद्य चास्वाद्य च वीक्षमाणः क्रुद्धोऽतिवेलं प्रजगाद वाक्यम् ॥६॥
6. asiṁ samuddhṛtya śitaṁ sudhāraṁ; kaṇṭhe samākramya ca vepamānam ,
utkṛtya vakṣaḥ patitasya bhūmā;vathāpibacchoṇitamasya koṣṇam ,
āsvādya cāsvādya ca vīkṣamāṇaḥ; kruddho'tivelaṁ prajagāda vākyam.
6. asim samuddhṛtya śitam sudhāram kaṇṭhe samākramya
ca vepamānam utkṛtya vakṣaḥ patitasya bhūmau
atha apibat śoṇitam asya koṣṇam āsvādya ca āsvādya
ca vīkṣamāṇaḥ kruddhaḥ ativelam prajagāda vākyam
6. śitam sudhāram asim samuddhṛtya ca vepamānam
kaṇṭhe samākramya ca bhūmau patitasya vakṣaḥ utkṛtya
atha asya koṣṇam śoṇitam āsvādya ca āsvādya
ca vīkṣamāṇaḥ kruddhaḥ ativelam vākyam prajagāda
6. Drawing his sharpened, very keen-edged sword, and stepping on the neck of the trembling Jayadratha, Bhimasena then tore open the chest of the one fallen on the ground. He drank Jayadratha's lukewarm blood, tasting it repeatedly. As he watched, enraged, he spoke these words with great intensity.
स्तन्यस्य मातुर्मधुसर्पिषो वा माध्वीकपानस्य च सत्कृतस्य ।
दिव्यस्य वा तोयरसस्य पानात्पयोदधिभ्यां मथिताच्च मुख्यात् ।
सर्वेभ्य एवाभ्यधिको रसोऽयं मतो ममाद्याहितलोहितस्य ॥७॥
7. stanyasya māturmadhusarpiṣo vā; mādhvīkapānasya ca satkṛtasya ,
divyasya vā toyarasasya pānā;tpayodadhibhyāṁ mathitācca mukhyāt ,
sarvebhya evābhyadhiko raso'yaṁ; mato mamādyāhitalohitasya.
7. stanyasya mātuḥ madhusarpiṣaḥ vā mādhvīkapānasya
ca satkṛtasya divyasya vā toyarasasya pānāt
payodadhibhyām mathitāt ca mukhyāt sarvebhyaḥ eva
abhyadhikaḥ rasaḥ ayam mataḥ mama adya āhitalohitasya
7. adya āhitalohitasya ayam rasaḥ mama mataḥ asti saḥ rasaḥ
mātuḥ stanyasya vā madhusarpiṣaḥ vā satkṛtasya
mādhvīkapānasya ca divyasya vā toyarasasya pānāt ca payodadhibhyām
mukhyāt mathitāt ca sarvebhyaḥ eva abhyadhikaḥ asti
7. This taste (rasa) is considered by me, who today has spilled this blood, to be superior to all other tastes: a mother's breast milk, or honey and ghee, or the drinking of revered mead, or even the drinking of divine refreshing water, or the finest essence churned from milk and curds.
एवं ब्रुवाणं पुनराद्रवन्तमास्वाद्य वल्गन्तमतिप्रहृष्टम् ।
ये भीमसेनं ददृशुस्तदानीं भयेन तेऽपि व्यथिता निपेतुः ॥८॥
8. evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ punarādravanta;māsvādya valgantamatiprahṛṣṭam ,
ye bhīmasenaṁ dadṛśustadānīṁ; bhayena te'pi vyathitā nipetuḥ.
8. evam bruvāṇam punaḥ ādravantam
āsvādya valgantam atiprahṛṣṭam
ye bhīmasenam dadṛśuḥ tadānīm
bhayena te api vyathitāḥ nipetuḥ
8. ye tadānīm evam bruvāṇam punaḥ
ādravantam āsvādya valgantam
atiprahṛṣṭam bhīmasenam dadṛśuḥ te
api bhayena vyathitāḥ nipetuḥ
8. Those who at that time saw Bhīmasena, speaking thus, rushing forward again, having tasted (blood), leaping, and exceedingly delighted, even they fell down, distressed by fear.
ये चापि तत्रापतिता मनुष्यास्तेषां करेभ्यः पतितं च शस्त्रम् ।
भयाच्च संचुक्रुशुरुच्चकैस्ते निमीलिताक्षा ददृशुश्च तन्न ॥९॥
9. ye cāpi tatrāpatitā manuṣyā;steṣāṁ karebhyaḥ patitaṁ ca śastram ,
bhayācca saṁcukruśuruccakaiste; nimīlitākṣā dadṛśuśca tanna.
9. ye ca api tatra āpatitāḥ manuṣyāḥ
teṣām karebhyaḥ patitam ca śastram
bhayāt ca saṃcukruśuḥ uccakaiḥ
te nimīlitākṣāḥ dadṛśuḥ ca tat na
9. ca api ye manuṣyāḥ tatra āpatitāḥ
teṣām karebhyaḥ ca śastram patitam
ca bhayāt te uccakaiḥ saṃcukruśuḥ
ca nimīlitākṣāḥ tat na dadṛśuḥ
9. And those people who had fallen there, their weapons also fell from their hands. And they cried out loudly from fear, and with closed eyes, they did not see that.
ये तत्र भीमं ददृशुः समन्ताद्दौःशासनं तद्रुधिरं पिबन्तम् ।
सर्वे पलायन्त भयाभिपन्ना नायं मनुष्य इति भाषमाणाः ॥१०॥
10. ye tatra bhīmaṁ dadṛśuḥ samantā;ddauḥśāsanaṁ tadrudhiraṁ pibantam ,
sarve palāyanta bhayābhipannā; nāyaṁ manuṣya iti bhāṣamāṇāḥ.
10. ye tatra bhīmam dadṛśuḥ samantāt
dauḥśāsanam tat rudhiram pibantam
sarve palāyanta bhayābhipannāḥ
na ayam manuṣyaḥ iti bhāṣamāṇāḥ
10. ye tatra samantāt dauḥśāsanam tat
rudhiram pibantam bhīmam dadṛśuḥ
bhayābhipannāḥ sarve na ayam
manuṣyaḥ iti bhāṣamāṇāḥ palāyanta
10. Those who saw Bhīma there, from all sides, drinking the blood of Duḥśāsana, all fled, overcome by fear, saying, "This is not a human being!"
शृण्वतां लोकवीराणामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
एष ते रुधिरं कण्ठात्पिबामि पुरुषाधम ।
ब्रूहीदानीं सुसंरब्धः पुनर्गौरिति गौरिति ॥११॥
11. śṛṇvatāṁ lokavīrāṇāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt ,
eṣa te rudhiraṁ kaṇṭhātpibāmi puruṣādhama ,
brūhīdānīṁ susaṁrabdhaḥ punargauriti gauriti.
11. śṛṇvatām lokavīrāṇām idam vacanam
abravīt eṣaḥ te rudhiram kaṇṭhāt
pibāmi puruṣādhamā brūhi idānīm
susaṃrabdhaḥ punaḥ gauḥ iti gauḥ iti

abravīt he puruṣādhamā eṣaḥ te
rudhiram kaṇṭhāt pibāmi idānīm susaṃrabdhaḥ
punaḥ gauḥ iti gauḥ iti brūhi
11. To the heroes among the people who were listening, he spoke these words: "O vilest of men! I drink your blood from your throat. Now speak, if you are so fiercely provoked, 'cow, cow' again, 'cow, cow'!".
प्रमाणकोट्यां शयनं कालकूटस्य भोजनम् ।
दशनं चाहिभिः कष्टं दाहं च जतुवेश्मनि ॥१२॥
12. pramāṇakoṭyāṁ śayanaṁ kālakūṭasya bhojanam ,
daśanaṁ cāhibhiḥ kaṣṭaṁ dāhaṁ ca jatuveśmani.
12. pramāṇakoṭyām śayanam kālakūṭasya bhojanam
daśanam ca ahibhiḥ kaṣṭam dāham ca jatuveśmani
12. pramāṇakoṭyām śayanam kālakūṭasya bhojanam
ahibhiḥ ca daśanam kaṣṭam ca jatuveśmani dāham
12. We experienced lying in an extremely precarious situation (like on the tip of a scale), consuming the Kālakūṭa poison, suffering painful bites from serpents, and enduring the burning in the lac-house.
द्यूतेन राज्यहरणमरण्ये वसतिश्च या ।
इष्वस्त्राणि च संग्रामेष्वसुखानि च वेश्मनि ॥१३॥
13. dyūtena rājyaharaṇamaraṇye vasatiśca yā ,
iṣvastrāṇi ca saṁgrāmeṣvasukhāni ca veśmani.
13. dyūtena rājyaharaṇam araṇye vasatiḥ ca yā
iṣvastrāṇi ca saṃgrāmeṣu asukhāni ca veśmani
13. yā dyūtena rājyaharaṇam ca araṇye vasatiḥ ca
saṃgrāmeṣu iṣvastrāṇi ca veśmani asukhāni
13. The loss of the kingdom through gambling, the dwelling in the forest, the arrows and weapons in battles, and the unhappiness in our home.
दुःखान्येतानि जानीमो न सुखानि कदाचन ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्य दौरात्म्यात्सपुत्रस्य सदा वयम् ॥१४॥
14. duḥkhānyetāni jānīmo na sukhāni kadācana ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya daurātmyātsaputrasya sadā vayam.
14. duḥkhāni etāni jānīmaḥ na sukhāni kadācana
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya daurātmyāt sa-putrasya sadā vayam
14. vayam sadā etāni duḥkhāni jānīmaḥ na sukhāni
kadācana dhṛtarāṣṭrasya sa-putrasya daurātmyāt
14. We have always experienced these sufferings and never any happiness, all due to the wickedness of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and his sons.
इत्युक्त्वा वचनं राजञ्जयं प्राप्य वृकोदरः ।
पुनराह महाराज स्मयंस्तौ केशवार्जुनौ ॥१५॥
15. ityuktvā vacanaṁ rājañjayaṁ prāpya vṛkodaraḥ ,
punarāha mahārāja smayaṁstau keśavārjunau.
15. iti uktvā vacanam rājan jayam prāpya vṛkodaraḥ
punaḥ āha mahārāja smayan tau keśavārjunau
15. rājan mahārāja iti vacanam uktvā jayam prāpya
vṛkodaraḥ smayan punaḥ tau keśavārjunau āha
15. Having spoken thus, O King, and having achieved victory, Bhima (Vṛkodara), smiling, spoke again to those two, Kṛṣṇa (Keśava) and Arjuna.
दुःशासने यद्रणे संश्रुतं मे तद्वै सर्वं कृतमद्येह वीरौ ।
अद्यैव दास्याम्यपरं द्वितीयं दुर्योधनं यज्ञपशुं विशस्य ।
शिरो मृदित्वा च पदा दुरात्मनः शान्तिं लप्स्ये कौरवाणां समक्षम् ॥१६॥
16. duḥśāsane yadraṇe saṁśrutaṁ me; tadvai sarvaṁ kṛtamadyeha vīrau ,
adyaiva dāsyāmyaparaṁ dvitīyaṁ; duryodhanaṁ yajñapaśuṁ viśasya ,
śiro mṛditvā ca padā durātmanaḥ; śāntiṁ lapsye kauravāṇāṁ samakṣam.
16. duḥśāsane yat raṇe saṃśrutam me tat vai sarvam kṛtam
adya iha vīrau | adya eva dāsyāmi aparam dvitīyam
duryodhanam yajñapaśum viśasya | śiraḥ mṛditvā
ca padā durātmanaḥ śāntim lapsye kauravāṇām samakṣam
16. vīrau adya iha duḥśāsane yat raṇe me saṃśrutam,
tat vai sarvam adya kṛtam adya eva aparam dvitīyam duryodhanam yajñapaśum viśasya,
(tam) dāsyāmi (tataḥ) durātmanaḥ śiraḥ ca padā mṛditvā,
kauravāṇām samakṣam śāntim lapsye
16. O heroes, what I swore regarding Duḥśāsana in battle, all of that has indeed been accomplished here today. Today itself, having slain this other, second Duryodhana, as if he were an animal for a Vedic ritual (yajña), I shall make an offering of him; and having crushed the head of that evil-minded one with my foot, I shall attain peace (śānti) in the presence of the Kauravas.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं प्रहृष्टो ननाद चोच्चै रुधिरार्द्रगात्रः ।
ननर्त चैवातिबलो महात्मा वृत्रं निहत्येव सहस्रनेत्रः ॥१७॥
17. etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ prahṛṣṭo; nanāda coccai rudhirārdragātraḥ ,
nanarta caivātibalo mahātmā; vṛtraṁ nihatyeva sahasranetraḥ.
17. etāvat uktvā vacanaṃ prahṛṣṭaḥ
nanāda ca uccaiḥ rudhirārdragātraḥ
| nanarta ca eva atibalaḥ mahātmā
vṛtraṃ nihatya iva sahasranetraḥ
17. etāvat vacanaṃ uktvā (Having spoken these words),
prahṛṣṭaḥ (delighted) rudhirārdragātraḥ (with blood-drenched body) ca (and) uccaiḥ (loudly) nanāda (he roared).
ca (And) eva (indeed) atibalaḥ (exceedingly mighty) mahātmā (great soul) nanarta (danced),
iva (just as) sahasranetraḥ (Indra),
vṛtraṃ (Vṛtra) nihatya (having slain).
17. Having spoken these words, exceedingly delighted and with his body drenched in blood, he roared loudly. And that exceedingly mighty great soul (mahatma) danced, just like Indra (sahasranetras) having slain Vṛtra.
