जनमेजय उवाच ।
श्रुतस्त्वत्तो मया विप्र पूर्वेषां संभवो महान् ।
उदाराश्चापि वंशेऽस्मिन्राजानो मे परिश्रुताः ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
śrutastvatto mayā vipra pūrveṣāṁ saṁbhavo mahān ,
udārāścāpi vaṁśe'sminrājāno me pariśrutāḥ.

1. Janamejaya said: 'O Brāhmin, I have heard from you about the great origin of our ancestors. I have also thoroughly heard about the noble kings in this lineage.'
किं तु लघ्वर्थसंयुक्तं प्रियाख्यानं न मामति ।
प्रीणात्यतो भवान्भूयो विस्तरेण ब्रवीतु मे ॥२॥
2. kiṁ tu laghvarthasaṁyuktaṁ priyākhyānaṁ na māmati ,
prīṇātyato bhavānbhūyo vistareṇa bravītu me.

2. However, a concise and pleasing narration does not fully satisfy me. Therefore, please tell me more in detail.
एतामेव कथां दिव्यामा प्रजापतितो मनोः ।
तेषामाजननं पुण्यं कस्य न प्रीतिमावहेत् ॥३॥
3. etāmeva kathāṁ divyāmā prajāpatito manoḥ ,
teṣāmājananaṁ puṇyaṁ kasya na prītimāvahet.

3. Whose heart would not be delighted by this very divine story, which traces from Prajāpati up to Manu, and the sacred lineage of their descendants?
सद्धर्मगुणमाहात्म्यैरभिवर्धितमुत्तमम् ।
विष्टभ्य लोकांस्त्रीनेषां यशः स्फीतमवस्थितम् ॥४॥
4. saddharmaguṇamāhātmyairabhivardhitamuttamam ,
viṣṭabhya lokāṁstrīneṣāṁ yaśaḥ sphītamavasthitam.
4. saddharmaguṇamāhātmyaiḥ abhivardhitam uttamam
viṣṭabhya lokān trīn eṣām yaśaḥ sphītam avasthitam
4. Their excellent [fame], greatly enhanced by the glory of true dharma and virtues, having pervaded the three worlds, stands widespread and established.
गुणप्रभाववीर्यौजःसत्त्वोत्साहवतामहम् ।
न तृप्यामि कथां शृण्वन्नमृतास्वादसंमिताम् ॥५॥
5. guṇaprabhāvavīryaujaḥsattvotsāhavatāmaham ,
na tṛpyāmi kathāṁ śṛṇvannamṛtāsvādasaṁmitām.

5. I am never satisfied, even when hearing stories about those possessing virtue, influence, valor, energy, courage, and enthusiasm - stories which are comparable to the taste of nectar.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्पुरा सम्यङ्मया द्वैपायनाच्छ्रुतम् ।
प्रोच्यमानमिदं कृत्स्नं स्ववंशजननं शुभम् ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanpurā samyaṅmayā dvaipāyanācchrutam ,
procyamānamidaṁ kṛtsnaṁ svavaṁśajananaṁ śubham.

6. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Listen, O King. I will now narrate this entire auspicious account, which recounts the origins of their royal lineage, just as I heard it perfectly from Dvaipāyana in the past.'

विवस्वतो मनुः ।
मनोरिला ।
इलायाः पुरूरवाः ।
पुरूरवस आयुः ।
आयुषो नहुषः ।
नहुषस्य ययातिः ॥७॥
7. dakṣasyāditiḥ ,

vivasvato manuḥ ,
manorilā ,
ilāyāḥ purūravāḥ ,
purūravasa āyuḥ ,
āyuṣo nahuṣaḥ ,
nahuṣasya yayātiḥ.

7. From Dakṣa came Aditi. From Aditi came Vivasvān. From Vivasvān came Manu. From Manu came Ilā. From Ilā came Purūravas. From Purūravas came Āyu. From Āyu came Nahuṣa. From Nahuṣa came Yayāti.
ययातेर्द्वे भार्ये बभूवतुः ।
उशनसो दुहिता देवयानी वृषपर्वणश्च दुहिता शर्मिष्ठा नाम ।
अत्रानुवंशो भवति ॥८॥
8. yayāterdve bhārye babhūvatuḥ ,
uśanaso duhitā devayānī vṛṣaparvaṇaśca duhitā śarmiṣṭhā nāma ,
atrānuvaṁśo bhavati.

vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ca duhitā śarmiṣṭhā nāma atra anuvaṃśaḥ bhavati
8. Yayāti had two wives: Devayānī, the daughter of Uśanas, and Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan. Here follows their lineage.
यदुं च तुर्वसुं चैव देवयानी व्यजायत ।
द्रुह्युं चानुं च पूरुं च शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी ॥९॥
9. yaduṁ ca turvasuṁ caiva devayānī vyajāyata ,
druhyuṁ cānuṁ ca pūruṁ ca śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī.

druhyum ca anum ca pūrum ca śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī
9. Devayānī bore Yadu and Turvasu, and Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvan, bore Druhyu, Anu, and Pūru.
तत्र यदोर्यादवाः ।
पूरोः पौरवाः ॥१०॥
10. tatra yadoryādavāḥ ,
pūroḥ pauravāḥ.

10. From Yadu came the Yādavas, and from Pūru came the Pauravas.
पूरोर्भार्या कौसल्या नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे जनमेजयो नाम ।
यस्त्रीनश्वमेधानाजहार ।
विश्वजिता चेष्ट्वा वनं प्रविवेश ॥११॥
11. pūrorbhāryā kausalyā nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe janamejayo nāma ,
yastrīnaśvamedhānājahāra ,
viśvajitā ceṣṭvā vanaṁ praviveśa.
11. pūroḥ bhāryā kausalyā nāma tasyām
asya jajñe janamejayaḥ nāma
yaḥ trīn aśvamedhān ājāhāra
viśvajitā ca iṣṭvā vanam praviveśa
11. Pūru's wife was named Kausalyā. From her, his son Janamejaya was born, who performed three aśvamedha sacrifices, and after performing the Viśvajit sacrifice, he entered the forest.
जनमेजयः खल्वनन्तां नामोपयेमे माधवीम् ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे प्राचिन्वान् ।
यः प्राचीं दिशं जिगाय यावत्सूर्योदयात् ।
ततस्तस्य प्राचिन्वत्वम् ॥१२॥
12. janamejayaḥ khalvanantāṁ nāmopayeme mādhavīm ,
tasyāmasya jajñe prācinvān ,
yaḥ prācīṁ diśaṁ jigāya yāvatsūryodayāt ,
tatastasya prācinvatvam.
12. janamejayaḥ khalu anantām nāma upayeme
mādhavīm tasyām asya jajñe
prācinvān yaḥ prācīm diśam jigāya yāvat
sūryodayāt tataḥ tasya prācinvatvam
12. Janamejaya indeed married a woman of the Madhu lineage named Anantā. From her, Prācinvān was born to him. He conquered the eastern direction all the way to the sunrise. Because of this, he became known as Prācinvān.
प्राचिन्वान्खल्वश्मकीमुपयेमे ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे संयातिः ॥१३॥
13. prācinvānkhalvaśmakīmupayeme ,
tasyāmasya jajñe saṁyātiḥ.

13. Prācinvān indeed married Aśmakī. From her, Saṃyāti was born to him.

तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अहंपातिः ॥१४॥
14. saṁyātiḥ khalu dṛṣadvato duhitaraṁ varāṅgīṁ nāmopayeme ,
tasyāmasya jajñe ahaṁpātiḥ.

nāma upayeme tasyām asya jajñe ahaṃpātiḥ
14. Saṃyāti indeed married Varāṅgī, the daughter of Dṛṣadvat. From her, Ahaṃpāti was born to him.
अहंपातिस्तु खलु कृतवीर्यदुहितरमुपयेमे भानुमतीं नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे सार्वभौमः ॥१५॥
15. ahaṁpātistu khalu kṛtavīryaduhitaramupayeme bhānumatīṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe sārvabhaumaḥ.
15. ahaṃpātiḥ tu khalu kṛtavīryaduhitaram upayeme
bhānumatīm nāma tasyām asya jajñe sārvabhaumaḥ
15. Ahaṃpāti, however, indeed married Bhānumatī, the daughter of Kṛtavīrya. From her, Sārvabhauma was born to him.
सार्वभौमः खलु जित्वाजहार कैकेयीं सुनन्दां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे जयत्सेनः ॥१६॥
16. sārvabhaumaḥ khalu jitvājahāra kaikeyīṁ sunandāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe jayatsenaḥ.

sunandām nāma tasyām asya jajñe jayatsenaḥ
16. Sārvabhauma indeed conquered and took Kaikeyī, named Sunandā. From her, Jayatsena was born to him.
जयत्सेनः खलु वैदर्भीमुपयेमे सुषुवां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अराचीनः ॥१७॥
17. jayatsenaḥ khalu vaidarbhīmupayeme suṣuvāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe arācīnaḥ.

17. Jayatsena indeed married Suṣuvā, a princess of Vidarbha. From her, Arācīna was born to him.
अराचीनोऽपि वैदर्भीमेवापरामुपयेमे मर्यादां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे महाभौमः ॥१८॥
18. arācīno'pi vaidarbhīmevāparāmupayeme maryādāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe mahābhaumaḥ.
18. arācīnaḥ api vaidarbhīm eva aparām upayeme
maryādām nāma tasyām asya jajñe mahābhaumaḥ
18. Arācīna also married another princess of Vidarbha, named Maryādā. From her, Mahābhauma was born to him.
महाभौमः खलु प्रासेनजितीमुपयेमे सुयज्ञां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अयुतनायी ।
यः पुरुषमेधानामयुतमानयत् ।
तदस्यायुतनायित्वम् ॥१९॥
19. mahābhaumaḥ khalu prāsenajitīmupayeme suyajñāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe ayutanāyī ,
yaḥ puruṣamedhānāmayutamānayat ,
tadasyāyutanāyitvam.
19. mahābhaumaḥ khalu prāsenajitīm
upayeme suyajñām nāma tasyām asya jajñe
ayutanāyī yaḥ puruṣamedhānām
ayutam ānayat tat asya ayutanāyitvam
19. Mahābhauma indeed married Suyajñā, a princess of Prasenajit. From her, Ayutanāyī was born to him. He was the one who performed ten thousand puruṣamedhas. This is what gives him the name Ayutanāyī.
अयुतनायी खलु पृथुश्रवसो दुहितरमुपयेमे भासां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे अक्रोधनः ॥२०॥
20. ayutanāyī khalu pṛthuśravaso duhitaramupayeme bhāsāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe akrodhanaḥ.

20. Ayutanāyī indeed married Bhāsā, the daughter of Pṛthuśravas. From her, Akrodhana was born to him.
अक्रोधनः खलु कालिङ्गीं करण्डुं नामोपयेमे ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे देवातिथिः ॥२१॥
21. akrodhanaḥ khalu kāliṅgīṁ karaṇḍuṁ nāmopayeme ,
tasyāmasya jajñe devātithiḥ.

upayeme tasyām asya jajñe devātithiḥ
21. Akrodhana indeed married Karaṇḍu, a princess of Kalinga. From her, Devātithi was born to him.
देवातिथिः खलु वैदेहीमुपयेमे मर्यादां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे ऋचः ॥२२॥
22. devātithiḥ khalu vaidehīmupayeme maryādāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe ṛcaḥ.

22. Devātithi indeed married Vaidehī, named Maryādā. From her, his son Ṛca was born.
ऋचः खल्वाङ्गेयीमुपयेमे सुदेवां नाम ।
तस्यां पुत्रमजनयदृक्षम् ॥२३॥
23. ṛcaḥ khalvāṅgeyīmupayeme sudevāṁ nāma ,
tasyāṁ putramajanayadṛkṣam.
23. ṛcaḥ khalu āṅgeyīm upayeme sudevām
nāma tasyām putram ajanayat ṛkṣam
23. Ṛca indeed married Āṅgeyī, named Sudevā. From her, he begot a son named Ṛkṣa.
ऋक्षः खलु तक्षकदुहितरमुपयेमे ज्वालां नाम ।
तस्यां पुत्रं मतिनारं नामोत्पादयामास ॥२४॥
24. ṛkṣaḥ khalu takṣakaduhitaramupayeme jvālāṁ nāma ,
tasyāṁ putraṁ matināraṁ nāmotpādayāmāsa.
24. ṛkṣaḥ khalu takṣakaduḥitaram upayeme jvālām
nāma tasyām putram matināram nāma utpādayāmāsa
24. Ṛkṣa indeed married Takṣaka's daughter, named Jvālā. From her, he begot a son named Matināra.
मतिनारः खलु सरस्वत्यां
द्वादशवार्षिकं सत्रमाजहार ॥२५॥
25. matināraḥ khalu sarasvatyāṁ
dvādaśavārṣikaṁ satramājahāra.

25. Matināra indeed conducted a twelve-year yagya on the Sarasvatī river.
निवृत्ते च सत्रे सरस्वत्यभिगम्य तं भर्तारं वरयामास ।
तस्यां पुत्रमजनयत्तंसुं नाम ॥२६॥
26. nivṛtte ca satre sarasvatyabhigamya taṁ bhartāraṁ varayāmāsa ,
tasyāṁ putramajanayattaṁsuṁ nāma.
26. nivṛtte ca satre sarasvatī abhigamya tam bhartāram
varayāmāsa tasyām putram ajanayat taṃsum nāma
26. And when the yagya was completed, Sarasvatī approached Matināra and chose him as her husband. From her, he begot a son named Taṃsu.

27. Here follows the lineage.
तंसुं सरस्वती पुत्रं मतिनारादजीजनत् ।
इलिनं जनयामास कालिन्द्यां तंसुरात्मजम् ॥२८॥

ilinaṁ janayāmāsa kālindyāṁ taṁsurātmajam.

ilinam janayāmāsa kālindyām taṃsuḥ ātmajam
28. Sarasvatī gave birth to a son named Taṃsu through Matināra. Taṃsu begot a son named Ilina in Kālindī.
इलिनस्तु रथंतर्यां
दुःषन्ताद्यान्पञ्च पुत्रानजनयत् ॥२९॥
29. ilinastu rathaṁtaryāṁ
duḥṣantādyānpañca putrānajanayat.

29. Ilina, however, through Rathantarī, begot five sons, with Duṣyanta as the foremost among them.
दुःषन्तः खलु विश्वामित्रदुहितरं शकुन्तलां नामोपयेमे ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे भरतः ।
तत्र श्लोकौ भवतः ॥३०॥
30. duḥṣantaḥ khalu viśvāmitraduhitaraṁ śakuntalāṁ nāmopayeme ,
tasyāmasya jajñe bharataḥ ,
tatra ślokau bhavataḥ.
30. duḥṣantaḥ khalu viśvāmitraduḥitaram śakuntalām nāma
upayeme tasyām asya jajñe bharataḥ tatra ślokau bhavataḥ
30. Duṣyanta, indeed, married Viśvāmitra's daughter named Śakuntalā. To him, Bharata was born from her. On this matter, there are two verses.
माता भस्त्रा पितुः पुत्रो येन जातः स एव सः ।
भरस्व पुत्रं दुःषन्त मावमंस्थाः शकुन्तलाम् ॥३१॥
31. mātā bhastrā pituḥ putro yena jātaḥ sa eva saḥ ,
bharasva putraṁ duḥṣanta māvamaṁsthāḥ śakuntalām.
31. mātā bhastrā pituḥ putraḥ yena jātaḥ saḥ eva saḥ
bharasva putram duḥṣanta mā avamamsthāḥ śakuntalām
31. The mother is merely a vessel, the son belongs to the father; he by whom he is born is truly that (father). Therefore, Duṣyanta, cherish your son and do not disrespect Śakuntalā.
रेतोधाः पुत्र उन्नयति नरदेव यमक्षयात् ।
त्वं चास्य धाता गर्भस्य सत्यमाह शकुन्तला ॥३२॥
32. retodhāḥ putra unnayati naradeva yamakṣayāt ,
tvaṁ cāsya dhātā garbhasya satyamāha śakuntalā.

32. O King, a son elevates his father, the one who deposited the seed, from Yama's realm. And Śakuntalā spoke the truth: you are indeed the father of this embryo.

33. Therefore, he is Bharata.

34. Bharata indeed married Sunandā, a princess of Kāśī and daughter of Sarvasena. To him, from her, Bhumanyu was born.
भुमन्युः खलु दाशार्हीमुपयेमे जयां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे सुहोत्रः ॥३५॥
35. bhumanyuḥ khalu dāśārhīmupayeme jayāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe suhotraḥ.
35. bhumanyuḥ khalu dāśārhīm upayeme
jayām nāma tasyām asya jajñe suhotraḥ
35. Bhumanyu indeed married Jayā, a princess of the Dāśārha clan. To him, from her, Suhotra was born.
सुहोत्रः खल्विक्ष्वाकुकन्यामुपयेमे सुवर्णां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे हस्ती ।
य इदं हास्तिनपुरं मापयामास ।
एतदस्य हास्तिनपुरत्वम् ॥३६॥
36. suhotraḥ khalvikṣvākukanyāmupayeme suvarṇāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe hastī ,
ya idaṁ hāstinapuraṁ māpayāmāsa ,
etadasya hāstinapuratvam.
36. suhotraḥ khalu ikṣvākukanyām upayeme
suvarṇām nāma tasyām asya jajñe
hastī yaḥ idam hāstinapuram
māpayāmāsa etat asya hāstinapuratvam
36. Suhotra indeed married Suvarṇā, a princess of the Ikṣvāku dynasty. To him, from her, Hastī was born. It was he who founded this Hastinapura. This explains the name Hastinapura.
हस्ती खलु त्रैगर्तीमुपयेमे यशोधरां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे विकुण्ठनः ॥३७॥
37. hastī khalu traigartīmupayeme yaśodharāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe vikuṇṭhanaḥ.
37. hastī khalu traigartīm upayeme yaśodharām
nāma | tasyām asya jajñe vikuṇṭhanaḥ
37. Hasti indeed married Yasodhara, a woman from Trigarta. From her, Vikunthana was born to him.
विकुण्ठनः खलु दाशार्हीमुपयेमे सुदेवां नाम ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञेऽजमीढः ॥३८॥
38. vikuṇṭhanaḥ khalu dāśārhīmupayeme sudevāṁ nāma ,
tasyāmasya jajñe'jamīḍhaḥ.
38. vikuṇṭhanaḥ khalu dāśārhīm upayeme
sudevām nāma | tasyām asya jajñe ajamīḍhaḥ
38. Vikunthana indeed married Sudeva, a woman from Dasharha. From her, Ajamiḍha was born to him.
अजमीढस्य चतुर्विंशं पुत्रशतं बभूव कैकेय्यां नागायां गान्धार्यां विमलायामृक्षायां चेति ।
पृथक्पृथग्वंशकरा नृपतयः ।
तत्र वंशकरः संवरणः ॥३९॥
39. ajamīḍhasya caturviṁśaṁ putraśataṁ babhūva kaikeyyāṁ nāgāyāṁ gāndhāryāṁ vimalāyāmṛkṣāyāṁ ceti ,
pṛthakpṛthagvaṁśakarā nṛpatayaḥ ,

39. Ajamiḍha had one hundred and twenty-four sons born from Kaikeyī, Nāgā, Gāndhārī, Vimalā, and Ṛkṣā. These kings were founders of separate lineages. Among them, Saṃvaraṇa was a lineage founder.
संवरणः खलु वैवस्वतीं तपतीं नामोपयेमे ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे कुरुः ॥४०॥

42. But Viḍūratha married a princess from Magadha named Samprīyā. To them, a son named Arugvān was born.

तस्यां पुत्रानुत्पादयामास देवापिं शंतनुं बाह्लीकं चेति ॥४६॥

46. Pratīpa indeed married a princess from the Śaibya tribe named Sunandā. In her, he begot sons: Devāpi, Shaṃtanu, and Bāhlīka.
देवापिः खलु बाल एवारण्यं प्रविवेश ।
शंतनुस्तु महीपालोऽभवत् ।
अत्रानुवंशो भवति ॥४७॥
47. devāpiḥ khalu bāla evāraṇyaṁ praviveśa ,

47. Devāpi, while still a boy, indeed entered the forest. But Śaṃtanu became the king. Here follows the account of his lineage.
यं यं कराभ्यां स्पृशति जीर्णं स सुखमश्नुते ।
पुनर्युवा च भवति तस्मात्तं शंतनुं विदुः ॥४८॥
48. yaṁ yaṁ karābhyāṁ spṛśati jīrṇaṁ sa sukhamaśnute ,
punaryuvā ca bhavati tasmāttaṁ śaṁtanuṁ viduḥ.

48. Whoever he touches with his two hands, if old, that person experiences happiness. Furthermore, he becomes young again. Therefore, they know him as Śaṃtanu.

चित्राङ्गदो विचित्रवीर्यश्च ॥५२॥

52. She (Satyavatī) bore a secret-born son, Dvaipāyana, from Parāśara. From her alone, two sons, Citrāṅgada and Vicitravīrya, were also born to Śantanu.
तयोरप्राप्तयौवन एव चित्राङ्गदो गन्धर्वेण हतः ।
विचित्रवीर्यस्तु राजा समभवत् ॥५३॥
53. tayoraprāptayauvana eva citrāṅgado gandharveṇa hataḥ ,
vicitravīryastu rājā samabhavat.

53. Of those two, Citrāṅgada was killed by a Gandharva even before he reached manhood. Vicitravīrya, however, became king.

काशिराजदुहितरावुपयेमे ॥५४॥

58. He appeared before her and asked, "What shall I do?"

59. She said to him, "Your brother Vichitravirya has indeed gone to heaven childless. Please produce a worthy offspring for him."
स परमित्युक्त्वा त्रीन्पुत्रानुत्पादयामास
धृतराष्ट्रं पाण्डुं विदुरं चेति ॥६०॥
60. sa paramityuktvā trīnputrānutpādayāmāsa
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ pāṇḍuṁ viduraṁ ceti.

60. He, having said "So be it," produced three sons: Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura.

63. Pandu, however, had two wives: Kunti and Madri, both of whom were like jewels among women.

तथैवाप्लुतमनासादितकामरसमतृप्तं बाणेनाभिजघान ॥६४॥
64. atha pāṇḍurmṛgayāṁ caranmaithunagatamṛṣimapaśyanmṛgyāṁ vartamānam ,
tathaivāplutamanāsāditakāmarasamatṛptaṁ bāṇenābhijaghāna.

64. Then, while Pandu was hunting, he saw a sage in the form of a deer engaged in intercourse. Pandu shot him with an arrow while the sage was thus immersed and unsatisfied, not yet having attained the full pleasure of lovemaking.
स बाणविद्ध उवाच पाण्डुम् ।
चरता धर्ममिमं येन त्वयाभिज्ञेन कामरसस्याहमनवाप्तकामरसोऽभिहतस्तस्मात्त्वमप्येतामवस्थामासाद्यानवाप्तकामरसः पञ्चत्वमाप्स्यसि क्षिप्रमेवेति ॥६५॥
65. sa bāṇaviddha uvāca pāṇḍum ,
caratā dharmamimaṁ yena tvayābhijñena kāmarasasyāhamanavāptakāmaraso'bhihatastasmāttvamapyetāmavasthāmāsādyānavāptakāmarasaḥ pañcatvamāpsyasi kṣiprameveti.
65. saḥ bāṇaviddhaḥ uvāca pāṇḍum caratā dharmam imam
yena tvayā abhijñena kāmarasasya aham anavāptakāmarasaḥ
abhihataḥ tasmāt tvam api etām avasthām āsādya
anavāptakāmarasaḥ pañcatvam āpsyasi kṣipram eva iti
65. Pierced by the arrow, the sage said to Pandu, "You, who are aware and were practicing this (kingly) dharma, have struck me while I had not yet attained the pleasure of lovemaking. Therefore, you too, upon reaching this same state of unfulfilled desire, shall quickly meet your death."
स विवर्णरूपः पाण्डुः शापं
परिहरमाणो नोपासर्पत भार्ये ॥६६॥
66. sa vivarṇarūpaḥ pāṇḍuḥ śāpaṁ

66. That Pandu, looking discolored and trying to avoid the curse, did not approach his wives.

शृणोमि च नानपत्यस्य लोका सन्तीति ॥६७॥
67. vākyaṁ covāca ,
svacāpalyādidaṁ prāptavānaham ,
śṛṇomi ca nānapatyasya lokā santīti.

67. And he spoke these words: "I have brought this upon myself due to my own impulsiveness. Moreover, I hear that there are no realms for those who are childless."

68. He then said to Kuntī, "You, for my sake, must produce sons."

69. Thereupon, she produced sons: Yudhiṣṭhira from Dharma, Bhīmasena from Maruta, and Arjuna from Śakra.

इयं ते सपत्न्यनपत्या ।
साध्वस्यामपत्यमुत्पाद्यतामिति ॥७०॥

77. Then, the five Pandavas, accompanied by Kunti, were brought to Hastinapura and presented by the ascetics to Bhishma and Vidura.

78. Even there, in the House of Lacquer, an attempt was made to burn them, but they could not be burned due to Vidura's counsel.

80. Even there in Ekachakra, after killing a Rākṣasa named Baka, they went to the city of Panchala.

82. They produced sons: Yudhishthira fathered Prativindhya, Vrikodara (Bhima) fathered Sutasoma, Arjuna fathered Shrutakirti, Nakula fathered Shatanika, and Sahadeva fathered Shrutakarma.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु गोवासनस्य शैब्यस्य देविकां नाम कन्यां स्वयंवरे लेभे ।
तस्यां पुत्रं जनयामास यौधेयं नाम ॥८३॥

svayaṁvare lebhe tasyām putram janayāmāsa yāudheyam nāma
83. Yudhishthira, however, married Devika, the daughter of Shaibya (King) of Govasana, in a svayamvara ceremony. Through her, he fathered a son named Yaudheya.
भीमसेनोऽपि काश्यां बलधरां नामोपयेमे वीर्यशुल्काम् ।
तस्यां पुत्रं सर्वगं नामोत्पादयामास ॥८४॥
84. bhīmaseno'pi kāśyāṁ baladharāṁ nāmopayeme vīryaśulkām ,
tasyāṁ putraṁ sarvagaṁ nāmotpādayāmāsa.

84. Bhimasena also married Baladhara in Kashi, who was acquired as a prize for valor. Through her, he fathered a son named Sarvaga.
अर्जुनः खलु द्वारवतीं गत्वा भगिनीं वासुदेवस्य सुभद्रां नाम भार्यामुदवहत् ।
तस्यां पुत्रमभिमन्युं नाम जनयामास ॥८५॥
85. arjunaḥ khalu dvāravatīṁ gatvā bhaginīṁ vāsudevasya subhadrāṁ nāma bhāryāmudavahat ,
tasyāṁ putramabhimanyuṁ nāma janayāmāsa.

85. Arjuna, having indeed gone to Dvaravati, took Vasudeva's sister, Subhadra, as his wife. Through her, he fathered a son named Abhimanyu.
नकुलस्तु चैद्यां करेणुवतीं नाम भार्यामुदवहत् ।
तस्यां पुत्रं निरमित्रं नामाजनयत् ॥८६॥
86. nakulastu caidyāṁ kareṇuvatīṁ nāma bhāryāmudavahat ,
tasyāṁ putraṁ niramitraṁ nāmājanayat.

udavahat tasyām putram niramitram nāma ajanayāt
86. Nakula, however, took Karenumati, a princess of Chedi, as his wife. Through her, he fathered a son named Niramitra.
सहदेवोऽपि माद्रीमेव स्वयंवरे विजयां नामोपयेमे ।
तस्यां पुत्रमजनयत्सुहोत्रं नाम ॥८७॥
87. sahadevo'pi mādrīmeva svayaṁvare vijayāṁ nāmopayeme ,
tasyāṁ putramajanayatsuhotraṁ nāma.

87. Sahadeva also married Vijaya, the daughter of the Madra king, at a svayamvara ceremony. From her, he begot a son named Suhotra.
भीमसेनस्तु पूर्वमेव हिडिम्बायां
राक्षस्यां घटोत्कचं नाम पुत्रं जनयामास ॥८८॥
88. bhīmasenastu pūrvameva hiḍimbāyāṁ rākṣasyāṁ
ghaṭotkacaṁ nāma putraṁ janayāmāsa.

88. Bhimasena, however, had already begotten a son named Ghatotkaca from the demoness Hiḍimbā.

पाण्डवानां पुत्राः ॥८९॥

89. Thus, these are the eleven sons of the Pāṇḍavas.
विराटस्य दुहितरमुत्तरां नामाभिमन्युरुपयेमे ।
तस्यामस्य परासुर्गर्भोऽजायत ॥९०॥
90. virāṭasya duhitaramuttarāṁ nāmābhimanyurupayeme ,
tasyāmasya parāsurgarbho'jāyata.

90. Abhimanyu married Uttara, the daughter of Virata. From her, his fetus was born lifeless.
तमुत्सङ्गेन प्रतिजग्राह पृथा नियोगात्पुरुषोत्तमस्य वासुदेवस्य ।
षाण्मासिकं गर्भमहमेनं जीवयिष्यामीति ॥९१॥
91. tamutsaṅgena pratijagrāha pṛthā niyogātpuruṣottamasya vāsudevasya ,
ṣāṇmāsikaṁ garbhamahamenaṁ jīvayiṣyāmīti.
91. tam utsaṅgena pratijagrāha pṛthā niyogāt puruṣottamasya
vāsudevasya ṣāṇmāsikam garbham aham enam jīvayiṣyāmi iti
91. Pritha took that fetus onto her lap, at the command of Puruṣottama Vāsudeva (Krishna), who said, "I will revive this six-month-old fetus."
संजीवयित्वा चैनमुवाच ।
परिक्षीणे कुले जातो भवत्वयं परिक्षिन्नामेति ॥९२॥
92. saṁjīvayitvā cainamuvāca ,
parikṣīṇe kule jāto bhavatvayaṁ parikṣinnāmeti.

jātaḥ bhavatu ayam Parikṣit nāma iti
92. Having brought him back to life, he said: "Let this one, born in a diminished lineage, be named Parikṣit."

तस्यामस्य जनमेजयः ॥९३॥
93. parikṣittu khalu mādravatīṁ nāmopayeme ,
tasyāmasya janamejayaḥ.

93. Parikṣit, indeed, married a woman named Mādravatī. From her, Janamejaya was born to him.
जनमेजयात्तु वपुष्टमायां द्वौ
पुत्रौ शतानीकः शङ्कुश्च ॥९४॥
94. janamejayāttu vapuṣṭamāyāṁ
dvau putrau śatānīkaḥ śaṅkuśca.

94. From Janamejaya, in Vapuṣṭamā, were born two sons: Śatānīka and Śaṅku.
शतानीकस्तु खलु वैदेहीमुपयेमे ।
तस्यामस्य जज्ञे पुत्रोऽश्वमेधदत्तः ॥९५॥
95. śatānīkastu khalu vaidehīmupayeme ,
tasyāmasya jajñe putro'śvamedhadattaḥ.

tasyām asya jajñe putraḥ Aśvamedhadattaḥ
95. Śatānīka, indeed, married Vaidehī. From her, his son Aśvamedhadatta was born.
इत्येष पूरोर्वंशस्तु पाण्डवानां च कीर्तितः ।
पूरोर्वंशमिमं श्रुत्वा सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥९६॥
96. ityeṣa pūrorvaṁśastu pāṇḍavānāṁ ca kīrtitaḥ ,
pūrorvaṁśamimaṁ śrutvā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate.
96. iti eṣa Pūroḥ vaṃśaḥ tu Pāṇḍavānām ca kīrtitaḥ
Pūroḥ vaṃśam imam śrutvā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
96. Thus, this lineage of Pūru and of the Pāṇḍavas has been recounted. Having heard this lineage of Pūru, one is freed from all sins.
