ततो दुःशासनो राजञ्शैनेयं समुपाद्रवत् ।
किरञ्शरसहस्राणि पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ॥१॥

tato duḥśāsano rājañśaineyaṁ samupādravat ,

1. Sañjaya said: "Then, O King, Duḥśāsana attacked Śini's son (Sātyaki), showering thousands of arrows like a rain-bearing cloud."
स विद्ध्वा सात्यकिं षष्ट्या तथा षोडशभिः शरैः ।
नाकम्पयत्स्थितं युद्धे मैनाकमिव पर्वतम् ॥२॥
2. sa viddhvā sātyakiṁ ṣaṣṭyā tathā ṣoḍaśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
nākampayatsthitaṁ yuddhe mainākamiva parvatam.

2. Having struck Satyaki with sixty and also with sixteen arrows, he could not make him waver, standing firm in battle, just like Mount Mainaka.
स तु दुःशासनं वीरः सायकैरावृणोद्भृशम् ।
मशकं समनुप्राप्तमूर्णनाभिरिवोर्णया ॥३॥
3. sa tu duḥśāsanaṁ vīraḥ sāyakairāvṛṇodbhṛśam ,
maśakaṁ samanuprāptamūrṇanābhirivorṇayā.

3. But that hero (Satyaki) intensely covered Duḥśāsana with arrows, just as a spider covers a fly it has caught with its web.
दृष्ट्वा दुःशासनं राजा तथा शरशताचितम् ।
त्रिगर्तांश्चोदयामास युयुधानरथं प्रति ॥४॥
4. dṛṣṭvā duḥśāsanaṁ rājā tathā śaraśatācitam ,
trigartāṁścodayāmāsa yuyudhānarathaṁ prati.

4. Having seen Duḥśāsana thus covered by hundreds of arrows, the king urged the Trigartas towards Yuyudhāna's chariot.
तेऽगच्छन्युयुधानस्य समीपं क्रूरकारिणः ।
त्रिगर्तानां त्रिसाहस्रा रथा युद्धविशारदाः ॥५॥
5. te'gacchanyuyudhānasya samīpaṁ krūrakāriṇaḥ ,
trigartānāṁ trisāhasrā rathā yuddhaviśāradāḥ.

5. Those cruel-acting warriors of the Trigartas, three thousand chariots expert in warfare, went near Yuyudhāna.
ते तु तं रथवंशेन महता पर्यवारयन् ।
स्थिरां कृत्वा मतिं युद्धे भूत्वा संशप्तका मिथः ॥६॥
6. te tu taṁ rathavaṁśena mahatā paryavārayan ,
sthirāṁ kṛtvā matiṁ yuddhe bhūtvā saṁśaptakā mithaḥ.

kṛtvā matim yuddhe bhūtvā saṃśaptakāḥ mithaḥ

6. Having mutually become sworn fighters (saṃśaptakāḥ) and with their resolve (mati) firm in battle, they surrounded him with a great multitude of chariots.
तेषां प्रयततां युद्धे शरवर्षाणि मुञ्चताम् ।
योधान्पञ्चशतान्मुख्यानग्रानीके व्यपोथयत् ॥७॥
7. teṣāṁ prayatatāṁ yuddhe śaravarṣāṇi muñcatām ,
yodhānpañcaśatānmukhyānagrānīke vyapothayat.

7. As they were striving in battle and releasing showers of arrows, he crushed five hundred principal warriors in the vanguard.
तेऽपतन्त हतास्तूर्णं शिनिप्रवरसायकैः ।
महामारुतवेगेन रुग्णा इव महाद्रुमाः ॥८॥
8. te'patanta hatāstūrṇaṁ śinipravarasāyakaiḥ ,
mahāmārutavegena rugṇā iva mahādrumāḥ.

8. Struck by the arrows of the foremost of the Śinis (Sātyaki), they fell swiftly, like mighty trees shattered by the force of a great wind.
रथैश्च बहुधा छिन्नैर्ध्वजैश्चैव विशां पते ।
हयैश्च कनकापीडैः पतितैस्तत्र मेदिनी ॥९॥
9. rathaiśca bahudhā chinnairdhvajaiścaiva viśāṁ pate ,
hayaiśca kanakāpīḍaiḥ patitaistatra medinī.

9. O king, the earth there was strewn with chariots broken into many pieces, and with banners, and with fallen horses adorned with golden head-ornaments.
शैनेयशरसंकृत्तैः शोणितौघपरिप्लुतैः ।
अशोभत महाराज किंशुकैरिव पुष्पितैः ॥१०॥
10. śaineyaśarasaṁkṛttaiḥ śoṇitaughapariplutaiḥ ,
aśobhata mahārāja kiṁśukairiva puṣpitaiḥ.

10. O great king, those cut down by Śaineya's arrows and drenched in torrents of blood appeared splendid, like palāśa trees in full bloom.
ते वध्यमानाः समरे युयुधानेन तावकाः ।
त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छन्त पङ्कमग्ना इव द्विपाः ॥११॥
11. te vadhyamānāḥ samare yuyudhānena tāvakāḥ ,
trātāraṁ nādhyagacchanta paṅkamagnā iva dvipāḥ.
11. te vadhyamānāḥ samare yuyudhānena tāvakāḥ
trātāram na adhyagacchanta paṅkamagnāḥ iva dvipāḥ

11. Your warriors, being slaughtered in battle by Yuyudhāna, found no protector, just like elephants stuck in mud.
ततस्ते पर्यवर्तन्त सर्वे द्रोणरथं प्रति ।
भयात्पतगराजस्य गर्तानीव महोरगाः ॥१२॥
12. tataste paryavartanta sarve droṇarathaṁ prati ,
bhayātpatagarājasya gartānīva mahoragāḥ.

bhayāt patagarājasya gartāni iva mahoragāḥ

12. Then all of them turned back towards Droṇa's chariot, just like great serpents retreat into their holes out of fear of the king of birds.
हत्वा पञ्चशतान्योधाञ्शरैराशीविषोपमैः ।
प्रायात्स शनकैर्वीरो धनंजयरथं प्रति ॥१३॥
13. hatvā pañcaśatānyodhāñśarairāśīviṣopamaiḥ ,
prāyātsa śanakairvīro dhanaṁjayarathaṁ prati.
13. hatvā pañcaśatān yodhān śaraiḥ āśīviṣopamaiḥ
prāyāt saḥ śanakaiḥ vīraḥ dhanañjayaratham prati

13. Having slain five hundred warriors with arrows like poisonous snakes, that hero slowly proceeded towards Arjuna's (Dhanañjaya's) chariot.
तं प्रयान्तं नरश्रेष्ठं पुत्रो दुःशासनस्तव ।
विव्याध नवभिस्तूर्णं शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥१४॥
14. taṁ prayāntaṁ naraśreṣṭhaṁ putro duḥśāsanastava ,
vivyādha navabhistūrṇaṁ śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ.
14. tam prayāntam narāśreṣṭham putraḥ duḥśāsanaḥ tava
vivyādha navabhiḥ tūrṇam śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ
14. tava putraḥ duḥśāsanaḥ tam narāśreṣṭham prayāntam
navabhiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ śaraiḥ tūrṇam vivyādha
14. As that best of men (Bhīma) was proceeding, your son Duḥśāsana quickly struck him with nine arrows with well-jointed shafts.
स तु तं प्रतिविव्याध पञ्चभिर्निशितैः शरैः ।
रुक्मपुङ्खैर्महेष्वासो गार्ध्रपत्रैरजिह्मगैः ॥१५॥
15. sa tu taṁ prativivyādha pañcabhirniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
rukmapuṅkhairmaheṣvāso gārdhrapatrairajihmagaiḥ.
15. saḥ tu tam prativivyādha pañcabhiḥ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
rukmapuṅkhaiḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ gārdhrapatraiḥ ajihmagaiḥ
15. saḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ tu tam pañcabhiḥ niśitaiḥ rukmapuṅkhaiḥ
gārdhrapatraiḥ ajihmagaiḥ śaraiḥ prativivyādha
15. But that great archer (Bhīma) struck him (Duḥśāsana) in return with five sharp arrows, having golden nocks, eagle feathers, and flying straight.
सात्यकिं तु महाराज प्रहसन्निव भारत ।
दुःशासनस्त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा पुनर्विव्याध पञ्चभिः ॥१६॥
16. sātyakiṁ tu mahārāja prahasanniva bhārata ,
duḥśāsanastribhirviddhvā punarvivyādha pañcabhiḥ.
16. sātyakim tu mahārāja prahasan iva bhārata
duḥśāsanaḥ tribhiḥ viddhvā punar vivyādha pañcabhiḥ
16. mahārāja bhārata tu duḥśāsanaḥ prahasan iva

16. But, O great king (Mahārāja), O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), Duḥśāsana, as if laughing, first struck Sātyaki with three (arrows) and then struck him again with five.
शैनेयस्तव पुत्रं तु विद्ध्वा पञ्चभिराशुगैः ।
धनुश्चास्य रणे छित्त्वा विस्मयन्नर्जुनं ययौ ॥१७॥
17. śaineyastava putraṁ tu viddhvā pañcabhirāśugaiḥ ,
dhanuścāsya raṇe chittvā vismayannarjunaṁ yayau.
17. śaineyaḥ tava putram tu viddhvā pañcabhiḥ āśugaiḥ
dhanuḥ ca asya raṇe chittvā vismayan arjunam yayau

17. But Śaineya (Sātyaki), having struck your son (Duḥśāsana) with five swift arrows and cut his bow in battle, then went to Arjuna, causing wonder.
ततो दुःशासनः क्रुद्धो वृष्णिवीराय गच्छते ।
सर्वपारशवीं शक्तिं विससर्ज जिघांसया ॥१८॥
18. tato duḥśāsanaḥ kruddho vṛṣṇivīrāya gacchate ,
sarvapāraśavīṁ śaktiṁ visasarja jighāṁsayā.
18. tataḥ duḥśāsanaḥ kruddhaḥ vṛṣṇivīrāya gacchate
sarvapāraśavīm śaktim visasarja jighāṃsayā
18. tataḥ kruddhaḥ duḥśāsanaḥ gacchate vṛṣṇivīrāya

18. Then, the enraged Duhshasana hurled a powerful axe-like missile (śakti) with the intention to kill at the advancing Vrishni hero.
तां तु शक्तिं तदा घोरां तव पुत्रस्य सात्यकिः ।
चिच्छेद शतधा राजन्निशितैः कङ्कपत्रिभिः ॥१९॥
19. tāṁ tu śaktiṁ tadā ghorāṁ tava putrasya sātyakiḥ ,
ciccheda śatadhā rājanniśitaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ.
19. tām tu śaktim tadā ghorām tava putrasya sātyakiḥ
ciccheda śatadhā rājan niśitaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ
19. rājan tu tadā sātyakiḥ tava putrasya tām ghorām
śaktim niśitaiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ śatadhā ciccheda
19. But then, O King, Satyaki cut that dreadful missile (śakti) of your son into a hundred pieces with sharp, heron-feathered arrows.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय पुत्रस्तव जनेश्वर ।
सात्यकिं दशभिर्विद्ध्वा सिंहनादं ननाद ह ॥२०॥
20. athānyaddhanurādāya putrastava janeśvara ,
sātyakiṁ daśabhirviddhvā siṁhanādaṁ nanāda ha.
20. atha anyat dhanuḥ ādāya putraḥ tava janeśvara
sātyakim daśabhiḥ viddhvā siṃhanādam nanāda ha
20. atha janeśvara tava putraḥ anyat dhanuḥ ādāya
sātyakim daśabhiḥ viddhvā siṃhanādam nanāda ha
20. Then, O lord of men, your son took another bow, and after piercing Satyaki with ten arrows, he let out a lion's roar.
सात्यकिस्तु रणे क्रुद्धो मोहयित्वा सुतं तव ।
शरैरग्निशिखाकारैराजघान स्तनान्तरे ।
सर्वायसैस्तीक्ष्णवक्त्रैरष्टाभिर्विव्यधे पुनः ॥२१॥
21. sātyakistu raṇe kruddho mohayitvā sutaṁ tava ,
śarairagniśikhākārairājaghāna stanāntare ,
sarvāyasaistīkṣṇavaktrairaṣṭābhirvivyadhe punaḥ.
21. sātyakiḥ tu raṇe kruddhaḥ mohayitvā
sutam tava śaraiḥ agniśikhākāraiḥ
ājaghāna stanāntare sarvāyasaiḥ
tīkṣṇavaktrāiḥ aṣṭābhiḥ vivyadhe punaḥ
21. tu raṇe kruddhaḥ sātyakiḥ tava sutam
mohayitvā agniśikhākāraiḥ śaraiḥ
stanāntare ājaghāna punaḥ sarvāyasaiḥ
tīkṣṇavaktrāiḥ aṣṭābhiḥ vivyadhe
21. But Satyaki, enraged in battle, after bewildering your son, struck him in the chest with arrows resembling flames of fire. He then pierced him again with eight sharp-pointed, all-iron arrows.
दुःशासनस्तु विंशत्या सात्यकिं प्रत्यविध्यत ।
सात्वतोऽपि महाराज तं विव्याध स्तनान्तरे ।
त्रिभिरेव महावेगैः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥२२॥
22. duḥśāsanastu viṁśatyā sātyakiṁ pratyavidhyata ,
sātvato'pi mahārāja taṁ vivyādha stanāntare ,
tribhireva mahāvegaiḥ śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ.
22. duḥśāsanaḥ tu viṃśatyā sātyakim prati
avidhyata sātvataḥ api mahārāja
tam vivyādha stana antare tribhiḥ
eva mahāvegaiḥ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ

22. Duḥśāsana, however, pierced Sātyaki with twenty arrows. But Sātyaki, O great king, in turn struck him in the chest with three exceedingly swift and sharp-pointed arrows.
ततोऽस्य वाहान्निशितैः शरैर्जघ्ने महारथः ।
सारथिं च सुसंक्रुद्धः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥२३॥
23. tato'sya vāhānniśitaiḥ śarairjaghne mahārathaḥ ,
sārathiṁ ca susaṁkruddhaḥ śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ.
23. tataḥ asya vāhān niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ jaghne mahārathaḥ
sārathim ca susaṃkruddhaḥ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ

23. Then, the great warrior (Sātyaki), exceedingly enraged, killed his (Duḥśāsana's) horses with sharp arrows, and likewise his charioteer, with sharp-pointed arrows.
धनुरेकेन भल्लेन हस्तावापं च पञ्चभिः ।
ध्वजं च रथशक्तिं च भल्लाभ्यां परमास्त्रवित् ।
चिच्छेद विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तथोभौ पार्ष्णिसारथी ॥२४॥
24. dhanurekena bhallena hastāvāpaṁ ca pañcabhiḥ ,
dhvajaṁ ca rathaśaktiṁ ca bhallābhyāṁ paramāstravit ,
ciccheda viśikhaistīkṣṇaistathobhau pārṣṇisārathī.
24. dhanuḥ ekena bhallena hastāvāpam ca
pañcabhiḥ dhvajam ca rathaśaktim ca
bhallābhyām parama astravit ciccheda viśikhaiḥ
tīkṣṇaiḥ tathā ubhau pārṣṇisārathī
24. parama astravit ekena bhallena dhanuḥ (ciccheda),
ca pañcabhiḥ hastāvāpam (ciccheda),
ca bhallābhyām dhvajam ca rathaśaktim (ciccheda),
tathā tīkṣṇaiḥ viśikhaiḥ ubhau pārṣṇisārathī (ciccheda)
24. The expert in supreme weapons (Sātyaki) cut Duḥśāsana's bow with one broad-headed arrow, and his arm-guard with five (arrows). He then cut both the banner and the chariot-spear with two broad-headed arrows, and likewise, both his rear-charioteers with sharp arrows.
स छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः ।
त्रिगर्तसेनापतिना स्वरथेनापवाहितः ॥२५॥
25. sa chinnadhanvā viratho hatāśvo hatasārathiḥ ,
trigartasenāpatinā svarathenāpavāhitaḥ.

trigartasenāpatinā svarathena apavāhitaḥ

25. He (Duḥśāsana), with his bow cut, deprived of his chariot, his horses killed, and his charioteer slain, was then carried away by the commander of the Trigarta army in his own chariot.
तमभिद्रुत्य शैनेयो मुहूर्तमिव भारत ।
न जघान महाबाहुर्भीमसेनवचः स्मरन् ॥२६॥
26. tamabhidrutya śaineyo muhūrtamiva bhārata ,
na jaghāna mahābāhurbhīmasenavacaḥ smaran.

26. O Bhārata, after rushing towards him, the mighty-armed Śaineya, for a moment, did not strike him, remembering Bhīmasena's words.
भीमसेनेन हि वधः सुतानां तव भारत ।
प्रतिज्ञातः सभामध्ये सर्वेषामेव संयुगे ॥२७॥
27. bhīmasenena hi vadhaḥ sutānāṁ tava bhārata ,
pratijñātaḥ sabhāmadhye sarveṣāmeva saṁyuge.

27. O Bhārata, indeed, the death of all your sons in battle was vowed by Bhīmasena in the midst of the assembly.
तथा दुःशासनं जित्वा सात्यकिः संयुगे प्रभो ।
जगाम त्वरितो राजन्येन यातो धनंजयः ॥२८॥
28. tathā duḥśāsanaṁ jitvā sātyakiḥ saṁyuge prabho ,
jagāma tvarito rājanyena yāto dhanaṁjayaḥ.
28. tathā duḥśāsanam jitvā sātyakiḥ saṃyuge prabho
| jagāma tvaritaḥ rājan yena yātaḥ dhanañjayaḥ
