ततस्तेषां समस्तानामृषीणामृषिसत्तमः ।
ऋषभो नाम विप्रर्षिः स्मयन्निव ततोऽब्रवीत् ॥१॥

tatasteṣāṁ samastānāmṛṣīṇāmṛṣisattamaḥ ,

1. Bhishma said: Then, among all those sages, the best of sages, the Brahmin sage (viprarṣi) named Ṛṣabha, as if smiling, then spoke.
पुराहं राजशार्दूल तीर्थान्यनुचरन्प्रभो ।
समासादितवान्दिव्यं नरनारायणाश्रमम् ॥२॥
2. purāhaṁ rājaśārdūla tīrthānyanucaranprabho ,
samāsāditavāndivyaṁ naranārāyaṇāśramam.

samāsāditavān divyam naranārāyaṇāśramam

2. O tiger among kings, O lord, formerly, while I was wandering through various holy places, I came upon the divine hermitage of Nara and Nārāyaṇa.
यत्र सा बदरी रम्या ह्रदो वैहायसस्तथा ।
यत्र चाश्वशिरा राजन्वेदान्पठति शाश्वतान् ॥३॥
3. yatra sā badarī ramyā hrado vaihāyasastathā ,
yatra cāśvaśirā rājanvedānpaṭhati śāśvatān.
3. yatra sā badarī ramyā hradaḥ vaihāyasaḥ tathā
yatra ca aśvaśirāḥ rājan vedān paṭhati śāśvatān
3. rājan yatra sā ramyā badarī tathā vaihāyasaḥ
hradaḥ ca yatra aśvaśirāḥ śāśvatān vedān paṭhati
3. O King, in that place where the beautiful Badarī (region) is, and also the celestial lake (Vaihāyasa), and where Aśvaśiras recites the eternal Vedas.
तस्मिन्सरसि कृत्वाहं विधिवत्तर्पणं पुरा ।
पितॄणां देवतानां च ततोऽऽश्रममियां तदा ॥४॥
4. tasminsarasi kṛtvāhaṁ vidhivattarpaṇaṁ purā ,
pitṝṇāṁ devatānāṁ ca tato''śramamiyāṁ tadā.
4. tasmin sarasi kṛtvā aham vidhivat tarpaṇam purā
pitṝṇām devatānām ca tataḥ āśramam iyām tadā
4. purā aham tasmin sarasi pitṝṇām devatānām ca
vidhivat tarpaṇam kṛtvā tadā tataḥ āśramam iyām
4. Having properly performed oblations (tarpaṇa) for the ancestors and gods in that lake formerly, I then proceeded to the hermitage (āśrama).
रेमाते यत्र तौ नित्यं नरनारायणावृषी ।
अदूरादाश्रमं कंचिद्वासार्थमगमं ततः ॥५॥
5. remāte yatra tau nityaṁ naranārāyaṇāvṛṣī ,
adūrādāśramaṁ kaṁcidvāsārthamagamaṁ tataḥ.
5. remāte yatra tau nityam naranārāyaṇau ṛṣī
adūrāt āśramam kañcit vāsārtham agamam tataḥ
5. yatra tau naranārāyaṇau ṛṣī nityam remāte tataḥ

5. Where those two sages, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, constantly delighted, I then went to a certain hermitage (āśrama) not far from there for the purpose of dwelling.
ततश्चीराजिनधरं कृशमुच्चमतीव च ।
अद्राक्षमृषिमायान्तं तनुं नाम तपोनिधिम् ॥६॥
6. tataścīrājinadharaṁ kṛśamuccamatīva ca ,
adrākṣamṛṣimāyāntaṁ tanuṁ nāma taponidhim.
6. tataḥ ca cīrājinadharam kṛśam uccam atīva ca
adrākṣam ṛṣim āyāntam tanum nāma taponidhim
6. tataḥ ca aham cīrājinadharam kṛśam atīva uccam
ca nāma tanum taponidhim āyāntam ṛṣim adrākṣam
6. And then I saw a sage approaching, named Tanu, who was exceedingly thin and tall, and wore bark garments and deerskin, truly a treasure of asceticism (tapas).
अन्यैर्नरैर्महाबाहो वपुषाष्टगुणान्वितम् ।
कृशता चापि राजर्षे न दृष्टा तादृशी क्वचित् ॥७॥
7. anyairnarairmahābāho vapuṣāṣṭaguṇānvitam ,
kṛśatā cāpi rājarṣe na dṛṣṭā tādṛśī kvacit.
7. anyaiḥ naraiḥ mahābāho vapuṣā aṣṭaguṇānvitam
kṛśatā ca api rājarṣe na dṛṣṭā tādṛśī kvacit
7. O mighty-armed one, his body was endowed with eight excellences. Yet, O royal sage, such emaciation (kṛśatā) as this was never seen anywhere by other men.
शरीरमपि राजेन्द्र तस्य कानिष्ठिकासमम् ।
ग्रीवा बाहू तथा पादौ केशाश्चाद्भुतदर्शनाः ॥८॥
8. śarīramapi rājendra tasya kāniṣṭhikāsamam ,
grīvā bāhū tathā pādau keśāścādbhutadarśanāḥ.
8. śarīram api rājendra tasya kāṇiṣṭhikāsamam
grīvā bāhū tathā pādau keśāḥ ca adbhutadarśanāḥ
8. O king of kings, his body was thin even as a little finger. And his neck, arms, feet, and hair were astonishing to behold.
शिरः कायानुरूपं च कर्णौ नेत्रे तथैव च ।
तस्य वाक्चैव चेष्टा च सामान्ये राजसत्तम ॥९॥
9. śiraḥ kāyānurūpaṁ ca karṇau netre tathaiva ca ,
tasya vākcaiva ceṣṭā ca sāmānye rājasattama.
9. śiraḥ kāyānurūpam ca karṇau netre tathā eva ca
tasya vāk ca eva ceṣṭā ca sāmānye rājasattama
9. His head was proportionate to his body, and similarly his ears and eyes. O best of kings, his speech and demeanor were quite ordinary.
दृष्ट्वाहं तं कृशं विप्रं भीतः परमदुर्मनाः ।
पादौ तस्याभिवाद्याथ स्थितः प्राञ्जलिरग्रतः ॥१०॥
10. dṛṣṭvāhaṁ taṁ kṛśaṁ vipraṁ bhītaḥ paramadurmanāḥ ,
pādau tasyābhivādyātha sthitaḥ prāñjaliragrataḥ.
10. dṛṣṭvā aham tam kṛśam vipram bhītaḥ paramadurmanāḥ
pādau tasya abhivādya atha sthitaḥ prāñjaliḥ agrataḥ
10. Having seen that emaciated Brahmin (vipra), I was frightened and extremely distressed. Then, having saluted his feet, I stood before him with folded hands.
निवेद्य नाम गोत्रं च पितरं च नरर्षभ ।
प्रदिष्टे चासने तेन शनैरहमुपाविशम् ॥११॥
11. nivedya nāma gotraṁ ca pitaraṁ ca nararṣabha ,
pradiṣṭe cāsane tena śanairahamupāviśam.
11. nivedya nāma gotram ca pitaram ca nararṣabha
pradiṣṭe ca āsane tena śanaiḥ aham upāviśam
11. nararṣabha aham nāma gotram ca pitaram ca
nivedya tena pradiṣṭe āsane ca śanaiḥ upāviśam
11. O chief of men, after announcing my name, lineage, and father, I slowly sat down on the seat indicated by him.
ततः स कथयामास कथा धर्मार्थसंहिताः ।
ऋषिमध्ये महाराज तत्र धर्मभृतां वरः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ sa kathayāmāsa kathā dharmārthasaṁhitāḥ ,
ṛṣimadhye mahārāja tatra dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.
12. tataḥ saḥ kathayāmāsa kathāḥ dharmārthasaṃhitāḥ
ṛṣimadhye mahārāja tatra dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
12. mahārāja tataḥ tatra ṛṣimadhye saḥ dharmabhṛtām
varaḥ kathāḥ dharmārthasaṃhitāḥ kathayāmāsa
12. O great king, then, that foremost upholder of natural law (dharma) among the sages there narrated stories imbued with the principles of natural law (dharma) and purpose (artha).
तस्मिंस्तु कथयत्येव राजा राजीवलोचनः ।
उपायाज्जवनैरश्वैः सबलः सावरोधनः ॥१३॥
13. tasmiṁstu kathayatyeva rājā rājīvalocanaḥ ,
upāyājjavanairaśvaiḥ sabalaḥ sāvarodhanaḥ.
13. tasmin tu kathayati eva rājā rājīvalocanaḥ
upāyāt javanaiḥ aśvaiḥ sabalaḥ sāvarodhanaḥ
13. tu tasmin kathayati eva rājā rājīvalocanaḥ
sabalaḥ sāvarodhanaḥ javanaiḥ aśvaiḥ upāyāt
13. But as he was still narrating, the lotus-eyed king arrived, riding swift horses, accompanied by his army and his retinue of women.
स्मरन्पुत्रमरण्ये वै नष्टं परमदुर्मनाः ।
भूरिद्युम्नपिता धीमान्रघुश्रेष्ठो महायशाः ॥१४॥
14. smaranputramaraṇye vai naṣṭaṁ paramadurmanāḥ ,
bhūridyumnapitā dhīmānraghuśreṣṭho mahāyaśāḥ.
14. smaran putram araṇye vai naṣṭam paramadurmanāḥ
bhūridyumnapitā dhīmān raghuśreṣṭhaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
14. araṇye naṣṭam putram smaran paramadurmanāḥ
bhūridyumnapitā dhīmān raghuśreṣṭhaḥ mahāyaśāḥ vai
14. Remembering his son, who was indeed lost in the forest, the wise father of Bhuridyumna, the best of the Raghus, and the greatly famous king was exceedingly distressed in mind.
इह द्रक्ष्यामि तं पुत्रं द्रक्ष्यामीहेति पार्थिवः ।
एवमाशाकृतो राजंश्चरन्वनमिदं पुरा ॥१५॥
15. iha drakṣyāmi taṁ putraṁ drakṣyāmīheti pārthivaḥ ,
evamāśākṛto rājaṁścaranvanamidaṁ purā.
15. iha drakṣyāmi tam putram drakṣyāmi iha iti
pārthivaḥ evam āśākṛtaḥ rājan caran vanam idam purā
15. rājan purā pārthivaḥ evam āśākṛtaḥ iha idam
vanam caran tam putram iha drakṣyāmi iti
15. O king, long ago, the king (Daśaratha), filled with such hope, wandered in this forest, thinking, 'I will see that son here, I will see him here.'
दुर्लभः स मया द्रष्टुं नूनं परमधार्मिकः ।
एकः पुत्रो महारण्ये नष्ट इत्यसकृत्तदा ॥१६॥
16. durlabhaḥ sa mayā draṣṭuṁ nūnaṁ paramadhārmikaḥ ,
ekaḥ putro mahāraṇye naṣṭa ityasakṛttadā.
16. durlabhaḥ saḥ mayā draṣṭum nūnam paramadhārmikaḥ
ekaḥ putraḥ mahāraṇye naṣṭaḥ iti asakṛt tadā
16. tadā nūnam saḥ ekaḥ paramadhārmikaḥ putraḥ mayā
draṣṭum durlabhaḥ mahāraṇye naṣṭaḥ iti asakṛt
16. Certainly, that single, extremely righteous (dharma) son is difficult for me to see; he is lost in this great forest – I thought this repeatedly at that time.
दुर्लभः स मया द्रष्टुमाशा च महती मम ।
तया परीतगात्रोऽहं मुमूर्षुर्नात्र संशयः ॥१७॥
17. durlabhaḥ sa mayā draṣṭumāśā ca mahatī mama ,
tayā parītagātro'haṁ mumūrṣurnātra saṁśayaḥ.
17. durlabhaḥ saḥ mayā draṣṭum āśā ca mahatī mama
tayā parītagātraḥ aham mumūrṣuḥ na atra saṃśayaḥ
17. saḥ mayā draṣṭum durlabhaḥ [asti].
ca mama mahatī āśā [asti].
tayā parītagātraḥ aham mumūrṣuḥ [asmi].
atra saṃśayaḥ na [asti].
17. He is difficult for me to see, and my hope is immense. Overcome by that very hope, I am on the verge of death; there is no doubt about this.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स भगवांस्तनुर्मुनिवरोत्तमः ।
अवाक्शिरा ध्यानपरो मुहूर्तमिव तस्थिवान् ॥१८॥
18. etacchrutvā sa bhagavāṁstanurmunivarottamaḥ ,
avākśirā dhyānaparo muhūrtamiva tasthivān.
18. etat śrutvā saḥ bhagavān tanuḥ munivarottamaḥ
avākśirāḥ dhyānaparaḥ muhūrtam iva tasthivān
18. etat śrutvā saḥ bhagavān tanuḥ munivarottamaḥ
muhūrtam iva avākśirāḥ dhyānaparaḥ tasthivān
18. Having heard this, that venerable person, the best among excellent sages, stood for a moment with his head bowed down, absorbed in meditation (dhyāna).
तमनुध्यान्तमालक्ष्य राजा परमदुर्मनाः ।
उवाच वाक्यं दीनात्मा मन्दं मन्दमिवासकृत् ॥१९॥
19. tamanudhyāntamālakṣya rājā paramadurmanāḥ ,
uvāca vākyaṁ dīnātmā mandaṁ mandamivāsakṛt.
19. tam anudhyāntam ālakṣya rājā paramadurmanāḥ
uvāca vākyam dīnātmā mandam mandam iva asakṛt
19. rājā paramadurmanāḥ dīnātmā tam anudhyāntam
ālakṣya mandam mandam iva asakṛt vākyam uvāca
19. Seeing him deeply absorbed in thought, the king, whose mind was extremely distressed, spoke words slowly and repeatedly, as if with a dejected spirit (ātman).
दुर्लभं किं नु विप्रर्षे आशायाश्चैव किं भवेत् ।
ब्रवीतु भगवानेतद्यदि गुह्यं न तन्मयि ॥२०॥
20. durlabhaṁ kiṁ nu viprarṣe āśāyāścaiva kiṁ bhavet ,
bravītu bhagavānetadyadi guhyaṁ na tanmayi.
20. durlabham kim nu viprarṣe āśāyāḥ ca eva kim bhavet
bravītu bhagavān etat yadi guhyam na tat mayi
20. viprarṣe durlabham kim nu āśāyāḥ ca eva kim bhavet
yadi tat mayi guhyam na bhagavān etat bravītu
20. O Brahmin-sage, what is truly difficult to achieve? And what will result from hope? May your revered self (bhagavān) please tell me this, if it is not a secret from me.
महर्षिर्भगवांस्तेन पूर्वमासीद्विमानितः ।
बालिशां बुद्धिमास्थाय मन्दभाग्यतयात्मनः ॥२१॥
21. maharṣirbhagavāṁstena pūrvamāsīdvimānitaḥ ,
bāliśāṁ buddhimāsthāya mandabhāgyatayātmanaḥ.
21. maharṣiḥ bhagavān tena pūrvam āsīt vimānitaḥ
bāliśām buddhim āsthāya mandabhāgyatayā ātmanaḥ
21. tena mandabhāgyatayā ātmanaḥ bāliśām buddhim
āsthāya maharṣiḥ bhagavān pūrvam vimānitaḥ āsīt
21. The revered great sage (maharṣi) had previously been dishonored by him, as the king had adopted a foolish mindset due to his own misfortune (ātman).
अर्थयन्कलशं राजन्काञ्चनं वल्कलानि च ।
निर्विण्णः स तु विप्रर्षिर्निराशः समपद्यत ॥२२॥
22. arthayankalaśaṁ rājankāñcanaṁ valkalāni ca ,
nirviṇṇaḥ sa tu viprarṣirnirāśaḥ samapadyata.
22. arthayan kalaśam rājan kāñcanam valkalāni ca
nirviṇṇaḥ sa tu viprarṣiḥ nirāśaḥ samapadyata
22. rājan saḥ arthayan kāñcanam kalaśam ca valkalāni
viprarṣiḥ tu nirviṇṇaḥ nirāśaḥ samapadyata
22. O King, that Brahmin-sage, who had been seeking a golden pitcher and bark garments, consequently became dejected and devoid of hope.
एवमुक्त्वाभिवाद्याथ तमृषिं लोकपूजितम् ।
श्रान्तो न्यषीदद्धर्मात्मा यथा त्वं नरसत्तम ॥२३॥
23. evamuktvābhivādyātha tamṛṣiṁ lokapūjitam ,
śrānto nyaṣīdaddharmātmā yathā tvaṁ narasattama.
23. evam uktvā abhivādya atha tam ṛṣim lokapūjitam
śrāntaḥ nyaṣīdat dharmātmā yathā tvam narasattama
23. atha evam uktvā lokapūjitam tam ṛṣim abhivādya
śrāntaḥ dharmātmā nyaṣīdat yathā tvam narasattama
23. Having thus spoken and then greeted that sage, who was revered by all people, the weary one, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, sat down, just as you would, O best among men.
अर्घ्यं ततः समानीय पाद्यं चैव महानृषिः ।
आरण्यकेन विधिना राज्ञे सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥२४॥
24. arghyaṁ tataḥ samānīya pādyaṁ caiva mahānṛṣiḥ ,
āraṇyakena vidhinā rājñe sarvaṁ nyavedayat.
24. arghyam tataḥ samānīya pādyam ca eva mahānṛṣiḥ
āraṇyakena vidhinā rājñe sarvam nyavedayat
24. tataḥ mahānṛṣiḥ arghyam pādyam ca eva samānīya
āraṇyakena vidhinā sarvam rājñe nyavedayat
24. Then, the great sage, having brought both respectful offering water and foot-washing water, presented everything to the king according to the custom observed by forest dwellers.
ततस्ते मुनयः सर्वे परिवार्य नरर्षभम् ।
उपाविशन्पुरस्कृत्य सप्तर्षय इव ध्रुवम् ॥२५॥
25. tataste munayaḥ sarve parivārya nararṣabham ,
upāviśanpuraskṛtya saptarṣaya iva dhruvam.
25. tataḥ te munayaḥ sarve parivārya nararṣabham
upāviśan puraskṛtya saptarṣayaḥ iva dhruvam
25. tataḥ te sarve munayaḥ nararṣabham parivārya
puraskṛtya upāviśan saptarṣayaḥ iva dhruvam
25. Then, all those sages, having surrounded the best among men, sat down, placing him prominently, just as the seven sages (saptarṣayaḥ) surround Dhruva (the Pole Star).
अपृच्छंश्चैव ते तत्र राजानमपराजितम् ।
प्रयोजनमिदं सर्वमाश्रमस्य प्रवेशनम् ॥२६॥
26. apṛcchaṁścaiva te tatra rājānamaparājitam ,
prayojanamidaṁ sarvamāśramasya praveśanam.
26. apṛcchan ca eva te tatra rājānam aparājitam
prayojanam idam sarvam āśramasya praveśanam
26. ca eva te tatra aparājitam rājānam āśramasya
praveśanam idam sarvam prayojanam apṛcchan
26. And there they indeed asked the unconquered king about the entire purpose of his entry into the hermitage (āśrama).
राजोवाच ।
वीरद्युम्न इति ख्यातो राजाहं दिक्षु विश्रुतः ।
भूरिद्युम्नं सुतं नष्टमन्वेष्टुं वनमागतः ॥२७॥
27. rājovāca ,
vīradyumna iti khyāto rājāhaṁ dikṣu viśrutaḥ ,
bhūridyumnaṁ sutaṁ naṣṭamanveṣṭuṁ vanamāgataḥ.
27. rāja uvāca vīradyumna iti khyātaḥ rājā aham dikṣu
viśrutaḥ bhūridyumnam sutam naṣṭam anveṣṭum vanam āgataḥ
27. rāja uvāca aham vīradyumna iti khyātaḥ rājā dikṣu
viśrutaḥ naṣṭam sutam bhūridyumnam anveṣṭum vanam āgataḥ
27. The king said: "I am King Viradyumna, renowned and well-known in all directions. I have come to the forest to search for my lost son, Bhuridyumna."
एकपुत्रः स विप्राग्र्य बाल एव च सोऽनघ ।
न दृश्यते वने चास्मिंस्तमन्वेष्टुं चराम्यहम् ॥२८॥
28. ekaputraḥ sa viprāgrya bāla eva ca so'nagha ,
na dṛśyate vane cāsmiṁstamanveṣṭuṁ carāmyaham.
28. ekaputraḥ saḥ vipra agrya bālaḥ eva ca saḥ anagha
na dṛśyate vane ca asmin tam anveṣṭum carāmi aham
28. saḥ ekaputraḥ ca bālaḥ eva,
he vipra agrya,
he anagha asmin vane saḥ na dṛśyate aham tam anveṣṭum carāmi
28. O best of Brahmins (viprāgrya), he is my only son, and he is just a child, O sinless one (anagha). He is not to be seen in this forest, and I am wandering to search for him.
ऋषभ उवाच ।
एवमुक्ते तु वचने राज्ञा मुनिरधोमुखः ।
तूष्णीमेवाभवत्तत्र न च प्रत्युक्तवान्नृपम् ॥२९॥
29. ṛṣabha uvāca ,
evamukte tu vacane rājñā muniradhomukhaḥ ,
tūṣṇīmevābhavattatra na ca pratyuktavānnṛpam.
29. ṛṣabha uvāca evam ukte tu vacane rājñā muniḥ adhomukhaḥ
tūṣṇīm eva abhavat tatra na ca pratyuktavān nṛpam
29. ṛṣabha uvāca rājñā evam vacane ukte tu,
adhomukhaḥ muniḥ tatra tūṣṇīm eva abhavat,
ca nṛpam na pratyuktavān
29. Rishabha said: "When the king made this statement, the sage lowered his face and remained silent there; he did not offer any reply to the king."
स हि तेन पुरा विप्रो राज्ञा नात्यर्थमानितः ।
आशाकृशं च राजेन्द्र तपो दीर्घं समास्थितः ॥३०॥
30. sa hi tena purā vipro rājñā nātyarthamānitaḥ ,
āśākṛśaṁ ca rājendra tapo dīrghaṁ samāsthitaḥ.
30. saḥ hi tena purā vipraḥ rājñā na atyartham mānitaḥ
| āśākṛśam ca rājendra tapaḥ dīrgham samāsthitaḥ
30. hi saḥ vipraḥ purā tena rājñā na atyartham mānitaḥ ca rājendra,
(saḥ) āśākṛśam dīrgham tapaḥ samāsthitaḥ
30. Indeed, that Brahmin (vipra) had not been greatly honored by that king before. And, O great king (rājendra), he, with diminished hopes, had undertaken a long penance (tapas).
प्रतिग्रहमहं राज्ञां न करिष्ये कथंचन ।
अन्येषां चैव वर्णानामिति कृत्वा धियं तदा ॥३१॥
31. pratigrahamahaṁ rājñāṁ na kariṣye kathaṁcana ,
anyeṣāṁ caiva varṇānāmiti kṛtvā dhiyaṁ tadā.
31. pratigraham aham rājñām na kariṣye kathaṃcana
anyeṣām ca eva varṇānām iti kṛtvā dhiyam tadā
31. tadā iti dhiyam kṛtvā,
aham rājñām anyeṣām ca eva varṇānām kathaṃcana pratigraham na kariṣye
31. Then, having made this firm resolution, "I shall not accept gifts from kings or indeed from any other social classes at all."
आशा हि पुरुषं बालं लालापयति तस्थुषी ।
तामहं व्यपनेष्यामि इति कृत्वा व्यवस्थितः ॥३२॥
32. āśā hi puruṣaṁ bālaṁ lālāpayati tasthuṣī ,
tāmahaṁ vyapaneṣyāmi iti kṛtvā vyavasthitaḥ.
32. āśā hi puruṣam bālam lālāpayati tasthūṣī
tām aham vyapaneṣyāmi iti kṛtvā vyavasthitaḥ
32. hi tasthūṣī āśā bālam puruṣam lālāpayati iti kṛtvā,
aham tām vyapaneṣyāmi vyavasthitaḥ.
32. Indeed, hope (āśā), which stands firm, causes a foolish person to prattle idly. Having made this resolution, "I shall dispel her (hope)," I became resolute.
राजोवाच ।
आशायाः किं कृशत्वं च किं चेह भुवि दुर्लभम् ।
ब्रवीतु भगवानेतत्त्वं हि धर्मार्थदर्शिवान् ॥३३॥
33. rājovāca ,
āśāyāḥ kiṁ kṛśatvaṁ ca kiṁ ceha bhuvi durlabham ,
bravītu bhagavānetattvaṁ hi dharmārthadarśivān.
33. rājā uvāca āśāyāḥ kim kṛśatvam ca kim ca iha bhuvi
durlabham bravītu bhagavān etat tvam hi dharmārthadarśivān
33. rājā uvāca āśāyāḥ kim kṛśatvam,
ca iha bhuvi kim durlabham ca? bhagavān etat bravītu hi tvam dharmārthadarśivān.
33. The king spoke: "What is the fragility of hope (āśā), and what is truly difficult to obtain here on Earth? Venerable sir, please explain this, for you indeed possess insight into righteousness (dharma) and purpose (artha)."
ऋषभ उवाच ।
ततः संस्मृत्य तत्सर्वं स्मारयिष्यन्निवाब्रवीत् ।
राजानं भगवान्विप्रस्ततः कृशतनुस्तनुः ॥३४॥
34. ṛṣabha uvāca ,
tataḥ saṁsmṛtya tatsarvaṁ smārayiṣyannivābravīt ,
rājānaṁ bhagavānviprastataḥ kṛśatanustanuḥ.
34. ṛṣabha uvāca tataḥ saṃsmṛtya tat sarvam smārayiṣyan iva
abravīt rājānam bhagavān vipraḥ tataḥ kṛśatanuḥ tanuḥ
34. ṛṣabha uvāca tataḥ bhagavān kṛśatanuḥ tanuḥ vipraḥ,
tat sarvam saṃsmṛtya,
smārayiṣyan iva,
tataḥ rājānam abravīt.
34. Ṛṣabha spoke: "Then, the venerable Brahmin (vipra), who had an emaciated body, having thoroughly remembered all that, spoke to the king as if to remind him."
कृशत्वे न समं राजन्नाशाया विद्यते नृप ।
तस्या वै दुर्लभत्वात्तु प्रार्थिताः पार्थिवा मया ॥३५॥
35. kṛśatve na samaṁ rājannāśāyā vidyate nṛpa ,
tasyā vai durlabhatvāttu prārthitāḥ pārthivā mayā.
35. kṛśatve na samam rājan āśāyā vidyate nṛpa tasyāḥ
vai durlabhatvāt tu prārthitāḥ pārthivāḥ mayā
35. rājan nṛpa āśāyāḥ kṛśatve samam na vidyate tasyāḥ
durlabhatvāt vai tu mayā pārthivāḥ prārthitāḥ
35. O King, O ruler, nothing equals desire (āśā) in its inherent meagerness or insatiability. Indeed, it is precisely because of its elusive nature (durlabhatva) that I have entreated kings.
राजोवाच ।
कृशाकृशे मया ब्रह्मन्गृहीते वचनात्तव ।
दुर्लभत्वं च तस्यैव वेदवाक्यमिव द्विज ॥३६॥
36. rājovāca ,
kṛśākṛśe mayā brahmangṛhīte vacanāttava ,
durlabhatvaṁ ca tasyaiva vedavākyamiva dvija.
36. rājā uvāca kṛśākṛśe mayā brahman gṛhīte vachanāt
tava durlabhatvam ca tasya eva vedavākyam iva dvija
36. rājā uvāca brahman dvija tava vachanāt mayā kṛśākṛśe
gṛhīte tasya durlabhatvam ca vedavākyam iva eva
36. The King said: 'O Brahmin, by your words, both the meager and the non-meager have been accepted by me. And indeed, O Twice-born (dvija), its (desire's) elusive nature (durlabhatva) is like a Vedic statement.'
संशयस्तु महाप्राज्ञ संजातो हृदये मम ।
तन्मे सत्तम तत्त्वेन वक्तुमर्हसि पृच्छतः ॥३७॥
37. saṁśayastu mahāprājña saṁjāto hṛdaye mama ,
tanme sattama tattvena vaktumarhasi pṛcchataḥ.
37. saṃśayaḥ tu mahāprājña saṃjātaḥ hṛdaye mama
tat me sattama tattvena vaktum arhasi pṛcchataḥ
37. mahāprājña sattama mama hṛdaye saṃśayaḥ saṃjātaḥ
tu tat tattvena pṛcchataḥ me vaktum arhasi
37. O greatly wise one, a doubt has arisen in my heart. Therefore, O best of beings, you should explain that truth to me, who is questioning.
त्वत्तः कृशतरं किं नु ब्रवीतु भगवानिदम् ।
यदि गुह्यं न ते विप्र लोकेऽस्मिन्किं नु दुर्लभम् ॥३८॥
38. tvattaḥ kṛśataraṁ kiṁ nu bravītu bhagavānidam ,
yadi guhyaṁ na te vipra loke'sminkiṁ nu durlabham.
38. tvattaḥ kṛśataram kim nu bravītu bhagavān idam yadi
guhyam na te vipra loke asmin kim nu durlabham
38. bhagavān vipra tvattaḥ kṛśataram kim nu idam bravītu
yadi te guhyam na asmin loke kim nu durlabham
38. O reverend sir, what indeed is more meager than you? Please explain this. If it is not a secret to you, O Brahmin, what in this world is truly difficult to obtain (durlabha)?
कृशतनुरुवाच ।
दुर्लभोऽप्यथ वा नास्ति योऽर्थी धृतिमिवाप्नुयात् ।
सुदुर्लभतरस्तात योऽर्थिनं नावमन्यते ॥३९॥
39. kṛśatanuruvāca ,
durlabho'pyatha vā nāsti yo'rthī dhṛtimivāpnuyāt ,
sudurlabhatarastāta yo'rthinaṁ nāvamanyate.
39. kṛśatanuḥ uvāca durlabhaḥ api
atha vā na asti yaḥ arthī dhṛtim
iva āpnuyāt sudurlabhataraḥ
tāta yaḥ arthinam na avamanyate
39. kṛśatanuḥ uvāca yaḥ arthī dhṛtim
iva āpnuyāt saḥ durlabhaḥ api
atha vā na asti tāta yaḥ arthinam
na avamanyate saḥ sudurlabhataraḥ
39. Kṛśatanu said: A petitioner who attains satisfaction is rare, or rather, such a one does not exist. But, my dear, someone who does not disregard a petitioner is even more exceedingly rare.
संश्रुत्य नोपक्रियते परं शक्त्या यथार्हतः ।
सक्ता या सर्वभूतेषु साशा कृशतरी मया ॥४०॥
40. saṁśrutya nopakriyate paraṁ śaktyā yathārhataḥ ,
saktā yā sarvabhūteṣu sāśā kṛśatarī mayā.
40. saṃśrutya na upakriyate param śaktyā yathā
arhataḥ saktā yā sarvabhūteṣu sā āśā kṛśatarī mayā
40. yā āśā sarvabhūteṣu saktā (asti),
(yad anena) saṃśrutya param śaktyā yathā arhataḥ na upakriyate (iti),
sā mayā kṛśatarī.
40. The hope (āśā) which is placed in all beings – that a person, having made a promise, will help to the full extent of their ability and as is proper – that very hope has been weakened by me.
एकपुत्रः पिता पुत्रे नष्टे वा प्रोषिते तथा ।
प्रवृत्तिं यो न जानाति साशा कृशतरी मया ॥४१॥
41. ekaputraḥ pitā putre naṣṭe vā proṣite tathā ,
pravṛttiṁ yo na jānāti sāśā kṛśatarī mayā.
41. ekaputraḥ pitā putre naṣṭe vā proṣite tathā
pravṛttim yaḥ na jānāti sā āśā kṛśatarī mayā
41. sā āśā mayā kṛśatarī (asti) yatra ekaputraḥ pitā putre naṣṭe vā proṣite tathā (sati),
yaḥ pravṛttim na jānāti.
41. The hope (āśā) that a father with an only son – when that son is lost or gone abroad and the father has no knowledge of his fate – will find solace or resolution, that hope has been diminished by me.
प्रसवे चैव नारीणां वृद्धानां पुत्रकारिता ।
तथा नरेन्द्र धनिनामाशा कृशतरी मया ॥४२॥
42. prasave caiva nārīṇāṁ vṛddhānāṁ putrakāritā ,
tathā narendra dhanināmāśā kṛśatarī mayā.
42. prasave ca eva nārīṇām vṛddhānām putrakāritā
tathā narendra dhaninām āśā kṛśatarī mayā
42. narendra,
prasave nārīṇām ca eva,
vṛddhānām putrakāritā tathā dhaninām āśā mayā kṛśatarī (asti).
42. O King, the hope (āśā) regarding women during childbirth, and the hope concerning the dutiful actions of sons towards the elderly, and similarly, the hope of the wealthy – all these hopes have been diminished by me.
ऋषभ उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा ततो राजन्स राजा सावरोधनः ।
संस्पृश्य पादौ शिरसा निपपात द्विजर्षभे ॥४३॥
43. ṛṣabha uvāca ,
etacchrutvā tato rājansa rājā sāvarodhanaḥ ,
saṁspṛśya pādau śirasā nipapāta dvijarṣabhe.
43. ṛṣabhaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā tataḥ rājan saḥ rājā
sāvarodhanaḥ saṃspṛśya pādau śirasā nipapāta dvijarṣabhe
43. ṛṣabhaḥ uvāca rājan etat śrutvā tataḥ saḥ sāvarodhanaḥ
rājā dvijarṣabhe pādau śirasā saṃspṛśya nipapāta
43. Ṛṣabha said: O King, upon hearing this, that king, accompanied by his retinue, touched the feet of the foremost of Brahmins with his head and prostrated himself.
राजोवाच ।
प्रसादये त्वा भगवन्पुत्रेणेच्छामि संगतिम् ।
वृणीष्व च वरं विप्र यमिच्छसि यथाविधि ॥४४॥
44. rājovāca ,
prasādaye tvā bhagavanputreṇecchāmi saṁgatim ,
vṛṇīṣva ca varaṁ vipra yamicchasi yathāvidhi.
44. rājā uvāca prasādaye tvā bhagavan putreṇa icchāmi
saṃgatim vṛṇīṣva ca varam vipra yam icchasi yathāvidhi
44. rājā uvāca bhagavan tvā prasādaye putreṇa saṃgatim
icchāmi vipra ca yathāvidhi yam icchasi varam vṛṇīṣva
44. The king said: "O revered one (bhagavan), I implore you; I wish for reunion with my son. And O Brahmin, choose any boon you desire, as is proper."
ऋषभ उवाच ।
अब्रवीच्च हि तं वाक्यं राजा राजीवलोचनः ।
सत्यमेतद्यथा विप्र त्वयोक्तं नास्त्यतो मृषा ॥४५॥
45. ṛṣabha uvāca ,
abravīcca hi taṁ vākyaṁ rājā rājīvalocanaḥ ,
satyametadyathā vipra tvayoktaṁ nāstyato mṛṣā.
45. ṛṣabhaḥ uvāca abravīt ca hi tam vākyam rājā rājīvalocanaḥ
satyam etat yathā vipra tvayā uktam na asti ataḥ mṛṣā
45. ṛṣabhaḥ uvāca rājīvalocanaḥ rājā hi tam vākyam abravīt ca vipra tvayā uktam etat satyam yathā,
ataḥ mṛṣā na asti
45. Ṛṣabha said: Indeed, the king with lotus-like eyes (rājīvalocana) spoke this to him: "O Brahmin, what you have said is true; there is no falsehood (mṛṣā) in it."
ततः प्रहस्य भगवांस्तनुर्धर्मभृतां वरः ।
पुत्रमस्यानयत्क्षिप्रं तपसा च श्रुतेन च ॥४६॥
46. tataḥ prahasya bhagavāṁstanurdharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
putramasyānayatkṣipraṁ tapasā ca śrutena ca.
46. tataḥ prahasya bhagavān tanuḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
putram asya ānayat kṣipram tapasā ca śrutena ca
46. tataḥ prahasya,
bhagavān tanuḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ,
asya putram tapasā ca śrutena ca kṣipram ānayat
46. Then, the revered one (bhagavan), who was the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma), smiled and quickly brought his son back through his asceticism (tapas) and sacred knowledge.
तं समानाय्य पुत्रं तु तदोपालभ्य पार्थिवम् ।
आत्मानं दर्शयामास धर्मं धर्मभृतां वरः ॥४७॥
47. taṁ samānāyya putraṁ tu tadopālabhya pārthivam ,
ātmānaṁ darśayāmāsa dharmaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.
47. tam samānāyya putram tu tadā upalabhya pārthivam
ātmanam darśayāmāsa dharmam dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
47. tadā dharmabhṛtām varaḥ tam pārthivam putram
samānāyya upalabhya ātmanam dharmam darśayāmāsa
47. Then, the foremost among those who uphold natural law (dharma), having summoned his son, the king, and having reprimanded him, revealed his true self (ātman) and his intrinsic nature (dharma).
संदर्शयित्वा चात्मानं दिव्यमद्भुतदर्शनम् ।
विपाप्मा विगतक्रोधश्चचार वनमन्तिकात् ॥४८॥
48. saṁdarśayitvā cātmānaṁ divyamadbhutadarśanam ,
vipāpmā vigatakrodhaścacāra vanamantikāt.
48. sandarśayitvā ca ātmanam divyam adbhutadarśanam
vipāpmā vigatakrodhaḥ cacāra vanam antikāt
48. ca divyam adbhutadarśanam ātmanam sandarśayitvā
vipāpmā vigatakrodhaḥ antikāt vanam cacāra
48. And having revealed his divine self (ātman), which had a wondrous appearance, he, being sinless and free from anger, went to the nearby forest.
एतद्दृष्टं मया राजंस्ततश्च वचनं श्रुतम् ।
आशामपनयस्वाशु ततः कृशतरीमिमाम् ॥४९॥
49. etaddṛṣṭaṁ mayā rājaṁstataśca vacanaṁ śrutam ,
āśāmapanayasvāśu tataḥ kṛśatarīmimām.
49. etat dṛṣṭam mayā rājan tataḥ ca vacanam śrutam
āśām apanayasva āśu tataḥ kṛśatarīm imām
49. rājan etat mayā dṛṣṭam,
tataḥ ca vacanam śrutam; āśu tataḥ imām kṛśatarīm āśām apanayasva
49. O King, this was seen by me, and then these words were heard: 'Quickly abandon this hope, which has become exceedingly frail!'
भीष्म उवाच ।
स तत्रोक्तो महाराज ऋषभेण महात्मना ।
सुमित्रोऽपनयत्क्षिप्रमाशां कृशतरीं तदा ॥५०॥
50. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sa tatrokto mahārāja ṛṣabheṇa mahātmanā ,
sumitro'panayatkṣipramāśāṁ kṛśatarīṁ tadā.
50. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca saḥ tatra uktaḥ mahārāja ṛṣabheṇa
mahātmanā sumitraḥ apanayat kṣipram āśām kṛśatarīm tadā
50. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca: mahārāja tatra mahātmanā ṛṣabheṇa saḥ
uktaḥ; tadā sumitraḥ kṣipram kṛśatarīm āśām apanayat
50. Bhishma said: "O Great King, he was addressed there by the great-souled Riṣabha. Then Sumitra quickly abandoned that exceedingly frail hope."
एवं त्वमपि कौन्तेय श्रुत्वा वाणीमिमां मम ।
स्थिरो भव यथा राजन्हिमवानचलोत्तमः ॥५१॥
51. evaṁ tvamapi kaunteya śrutvā vāṇīmimāṁ mama ,
sthiro bhava yathā rājanhimavānacalottamaḥ.
51. evam tvam api kaunteya śrutvā vāṇīm imām mama
sthiraḥ bhava yathā rājan himavān acalottamaḥ
51. kaunteya rājan evam tvam api mama imām vāṇīm
śrutvā himavān acalottamaḥ yathā sthiraḥ bhava
51. Therefore, O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), having heard this speech of mine, become firm, O King, just like the Himalayas, the foremost among mountains.
त्वं हि द्रष्टा च श्रोता च कृच्छ्रेष्वर्थकृतेष्विह ।
श्रुत्वा मम महाराज न संतप्तुमिहार्हसि ॥५२॥
52. tvaṁ hi draṣṭā ca śrotā ca kṛcchreṣvarthakṛteṣviha ,
śrutvā mama mahārāja na saṁtaptumihārhasi.
52. tvam hi draṣṭā ca śrotā ca kṛcchreṣu arthakṛteṣu
iha śrutvā mama mahārāja na saṃtaptum iha arhasi
52. mahārāja tvam hi kṛcchreṣu arthakṛteṣu iha draṣṭā
ca śrotā ca mama śrutvā iha saṃtaptum na arhasi
52. Indeed, you are both the observer and the listener in these difficult matters, which are undertaken for your benefit. Therefore, O great king (Mahārāja), having heard my words, you should not grieve here.
