क्रोधितो मम पुत्रेण दुःखितेन विशेषतः ॥१॥

1. Dhritarashtra said: "But when Bhishma had made his vow in that exceedingly terrible war, and when my son, particularly distressed, had angered him—
भीष्मः किमकरोत्तत्र पाण्डवेयेषु संजय ।
पितामहे वा पाञ्चालास्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥२॥
2. bhīṣmaḥ kimakarottatra pāṇḍaveyeṣu saṁjaya ,
pitāmahe vā pāñcālāstanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

2. What, Sanjaya, did Bhishma do there concerning the Pandavas? Or what did the Panchalas do concerning the grandfather (Bhishma)? Tell me that, Sanjaya.
संजय उवाच ।
गतपूर्वाह्णभूयिष्ठे तस्मिन्नहनि भारत ।
जयं प्राप्तेषु हृष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
gatapūrvāhṇabhūyiṣṭhe tasminnahani bhārata ,
jayaṁ prāpteṣu hṛṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu.

3. Sanjaya said: "O Bharata, on that day, when the greater part of the forenoon had passed, and the great-souled Pandavas had achieved victory and were jubilant—
सर्वधर्मविशेषज्ञः पिता देवव्रतस्तव ।
अभ्ययाज्जवनैरश्वैः पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ।
महत्या सेनया गुप्तस्तव पुत्रैश्च सर्वशः ॥४॥
4. sarvadharmaviśeṣajñaḥ pitā devavratastava ,
abhyayājjavanairaśvaiḥ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm ,
mahatyā senayā guptastava putraiśca sarvaśaḥ.

4. Your father Devavrata (Bhishma), an expert in all aspects of natural law (dharma), advanced with swift horses towards the Pandavas' army, protected completely by a large army and your sons.
प्रावर्तत ततो युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ।
अस्माकं पाण्डवैः सार्धमनयात्तव भारत ॥५॥
5. prāvartata tato yuddhaṁ tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam ,
asmākaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhamanayāttava bhārata.

5. O Bhārata, a tumultuous, hair-raising battle then commenced between us and the Pāṇḍavas, caused by your misconduct.
धनुषां कूजतां तत्र तलानां चाभिहन्यताम् ।
महान्समभवच्छब्दो गिरीणामिव दीर्यताम् ॥६॥
6. dhanuṣāṁ kūjatāṁ tatra talānāṁ cābhihanyatām ,
mahānsamabhavacchabdo girīṇāmiva dīryatām.
6. dhanuṣām kūjatām tatra talānām ca abhihanyatām
mahān samabhavat śabdaḥ girīṇām iva dīryatām

6. There, a great sound arose, like the splitting of mountains, from the twanging of bows and the slapping of palms.
तिष्ठ स्थितोऽस्मि विद्ध्येनं निवर्तस्व स्थिरो भव ।
स्थितोऽस्मि प्रहरस्वेति शब्दाः श्रूयन्त सर्वशः ॥७॥
7. tiṣṭha sthito'smi viddhyenaṁ nivartasva sthiro bhava ,
sthito'smi praharasveti śabdāḥ śrūyanta sarvaśaḥ.
7. tiṣṭha sthitaḥ asmi viddhi enam nivartasva sthiraḥ bhava
sthitaḥ asmi praharasva iti śabdāḥ śrūyante sarvaśaḥ
7. sarvaśaḥ tiṣṭha sthitaḥ asmi viddhi enam nivartasva

7. Words like 'Stand!', 'I am ready!', 'Strike him!', 'Retreat!', 'Be firm!', 'I am ready!', and 'Strike!' were heard everywhere.
काञ्चनेषु तनुत्रेषु किरीटेषु ध्वजेषु च ।
शिलानामिव शैलेषु पतितानामभूत्स्वनः ॥८॥
8. kāñcaneṣu tanutreṣu kirīṭeṣu dhvajeṣu ca ,
śilānāmiva śaileṣu patitānāmabhūtsvanaḥ.

śilānām iva śaileṣu patitānām abhūt svanaḥ

8. A sound like rocks falling on mountains arose from impacts on the golden armors, helmets, and banners.
पतितान्युत्तमाङ्गानि बाहवश्च विभूषिताः ।
व्यचेष्टन्त महीं प्राप्य शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥९॥
9. patitānyuttamāṅgāni bāhavaśca vibhūṣitāḥ ,
vyaceṣṭanta mahīṁ prāpya śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
9. patitāni uttama-aṅgāni bāhavaḥ ca vibhūṣitāḥ |
vyaceṣṭanta mahīm prāpya śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
9. patitāni uttama-aṅgāni ca vibhūṣitāḥ bāhavaḥ
mahīm prāpya śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ vyaceṣṭanta
9. The fallen heads and adorned arms, having reached the ground, twitched by hundreds and then by thousands.
हृतोत्तमाङ्गाः केचित्तु तथैवोद्यतकार्मुकाः ।
प्रगृहीतायुधाश्चापि तस्थुः पुरुषसत्तमाः ॥१०॥
10. hṛtottamāṅgāḥ kecittu tathaivodyatakārmukāḥ ,
pragṛhītāyudhāścāpi tasthuḥ puruṣasattamāḥ.
10. hṛta-uttama-aṅgāḥ kecit tu tathā eva udyata-kārmukāḥ
| pragṛhīta-āyudhāḥ ca api tasthuḥ puruṣa-sattamāḥ
10. kecit tu puruṣa-sattamāḥ hṛta-uttama-aṅgāḥ tathā
eva udyata-kārmukāḥ ca api pragṛhīta-āyudhāḥ tasthuḥ
10. Some of the best among men, though their heads were severed, still stood with bows raised and weapons grasped.
प्रावर्तत महावेगा नदी रुधिरवाहिनी ।
मातङ्गाङ्गशिलारौद्रा मांसशोणितकर्दमा ॥११॥
11. prāvartata mahāvegā nadī rudhiravāhinī ,
mātaṅgāṅgaśilāraudrā māṁsaśoṇitakardamā.
11. prāvartata mahā-vegā nadī rudhira-vāhinī |
mātaṅga-aṅga-śilā-raudrā māṃsa-śoṇita-kardamā
11. mahā-vegā rudhira-vāhinī mātaṅga-aṅga-śilā-raudrā

11. A mighty, swiftly flowing river, carrying blood, began to flow; it was fierce with elephant bodies as its rocks and had flesh and blood as its mud.
वराश्वनरनागानां शरीरप्रभवा तदा ।
परलोकार्णवमुखी गृध्रगोमायुमोदिनी ॥१२॥
12. varāśvanaranāgānāṁ śarīraprabhavā tadā ,
paralokārṇavamukhī gṛdhragomāyumodinī.
12. vara-aśva-nara-nāgānām śarīra-prabhavā tadā
| para-loka-arṇava-mukhī gṛdhra-gomāyu-modinī
12. tadā vara-aśva-nara-nāgānām śarīra-prabhavā

12. That river, originating from the bodies of excellent horses, men, and elephants, then faced the ocean of the other world, delighting vultures and jackals.
न दृष्टं न श्रुतं चापि युद्धमेतादृशं नृप ।
यथा तव सुतानां च पाण्डवानां च भारत ॥१३॥
13. na dṛṣṭaṁ na śrutaṁ cāpi yuddhametādṛśaṁ nṛpa ,
yathā tava sutānāṁ ca pāṇḍavānāṁ ca bhārata.
13. na dṛṣṭam na śrutam ca api yuddham etādṛśam nṛpa
yathā tava sutānām ca pāṇḍavānām ca bhārata
13. nṛpa bhārata,
tava sutānām ca pāṇḍavānām ca yathā etādṛśam yuddham,
na dṛṣṭam na śrutam ca api.
13. O King (nṛpa), O Bhārata, a battle such as this, between your sons and the Pāṇḍavas, has neither been seen nor heard before.
नासीद्रथपथस्तत्र योधैर्युधि निपातितैः ।
गजैश्च पतितैर्नीलैर्गिरिशृङ्गैरिवावृतम् ॥१४॥
14. nāsīdrathapathastatra yodhairyudhi nipātitaiḥ ,
gajaiśca patitairnīlairgiriśṛṅgairivāvṛtam.
14. na āsīt rathapathaḥ tatra yodhaiḥ yudhi nipātitaiḥ
gajaiḥ ca patitaiḥ nīlaiḥ giriśṛṅgaiḥ iva āvṛtam
14. tatra rathapathaḥ na āsīt,
yudhi nipātitaiḥ yodhaiḥ ca patitaiḥ nīlaiḥ gajaiḥ ca āvṛtam iva giriśṛṅgaiḥ.
14. There was no path for chariots there, as it was covered by warriors fallen in battle and by fallen dark elephants, resembling scattered mountain peaks.
विकीर्णैः कवचैश्चित्रैर्ध्वजैश्छत्रैश्च मारिष ।
शुशुभे तद्रणस्थानं शरदीव नभस्तलम् ॥१५॥
15. vikīrṇaiḥ kavacaiścitrairdhvajaiśchatraiśca māriṣa ,
śuśubhe tadraṇasthānaṁ śaradīva nabhastalam.
15. vikīrṇaiḥ kavacaiḥ citraiḥ dhvajaiḥ chatraiḥ ca
māriṣa śuśubhe tat raṇasthānam śaradi iva nabhastalam
15. māriṣa,
vikīrṇaiḥ citraiḥ kavacaiḥ dhvajaiḥ chatraiḥ ca tat raṇasthānam śaradi nabhastalam iva śuśubhe.
15. O respected one (māriṣa), that battlefield looked splendid with its scattered, colorful armors, banners, and umbrellas, just like the autumnal sky.
विनिर्भिन्नाः शरैः केचिदन्तपीडाविकर्षिणः ।
अभीताः समरे शत्रूनभ्यधावन्त दंशिताः ॥१६॥
16. vinirbhinnāḥ śaraiḥ kecidantapīḍāvikarṣiṇaḥ ,
abhītāḥ samare śatrūnabhyadhāvanta daṁśitāḥ.
16. vinirbhinnāḥ śaraiḥ kecit antapīḍāvikarṣiṇaḥ
abhītāḥ samare śatrūn abhyadhāvanta daṃśitāḥ
16. śaraiḥ vinirbhinnāḥ kecit,
antapīḍāvikarṣiṇaḥ,
abhītāḥ daṃśitāḥ ca samare śatrūn abhyadhāvanta.
16. Some warriors, though pierced by arrows and pulling out those causing inner agony, remained unafraid and armored as they charged towards the enemies in battle.
तात भ्रातः सखे बन्धो वयस्य मम मातुल ।
मा मां परित्यजेत्यन्ये चुक्रुशुः पतिता रणे ॥१७॥
17. tāta bhrātaḥ sakhe bandho vayasya mama mātula ,
mā māṁ parityajetyanye cukruśuḥ patitā raṇe.
17. tāta bhrātaḥ sakhe bandho vayasya mama mātula
mā mām parityaja iti anye cukruśuḥ patitāḥ raṇe
17. tāta bhrātaḥ sakhe bandho vayasya mama mātula

17. “O dear father, O brother, O friend, O kinsman, O companion, O my maternal uncle! Do not abandon me!” Thus, others, having fallen on the battlefield, cried out.
आधावाभ्येहि मा गच्छ किं भीतोऽसि क्व यास्यसि ।
स्थितोऽहं समरे मा भैरिति चान्ये विचुक्रुशुः ॥१८॥
18. ādhāvābhyehi mā gaccha kiṁ bhīto'si kva yāsyasi ,
sthito'haṁ samare mā bhairiti cānye vicukruśuḥ.
18. ādhāva abhy-ehi mā gaccha kim bhītaḥ asi kva yāsyasi
sthitaḥ aham samare mā bhaiḥ iti ca anye vicukruśuḥ
18. ādhāva abhy-ehi mā gaccha kim bhītaḥ asi kva yāsyasi
aham samare sthitaḥ mā bhaiḥ iti ca anye vicukruśuḥ
18. “Run hither! Come here! Do not go away! Are you afraid? Where will you go? I stand firm in battle! Do not be afraid!” And thus, others cried out.
तत्र भीष्मः शांतनवो नित्यं मण्डलकार्मुकः ।
मुमोच बाणान्दीप्ताग्रानहीनाशीविषानिव ॥१९॥
19. tatra bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo nityaṁ maṇḍalakārmukaḥ ,
mumoca bāṇāndīptāgrānahīnāśīviṣāniva.
19. tatra bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ nityam maṇḍalakārmukaḥ
mumoca bāṇān dīptāgrān ahīn āśīviṣān iva
19. tatra śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ nityam maṇḍalakārmukaḥ
dīptāgrān āśīviṣān ahīn iva bāṇān mumoca
19. There, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, whose bow was always drawn into a perfect circle, released arrows with flaming tips, just like venomous serpents.
शरैरेकायनीकुर्वन्दिशः सर्वा यतव्रतः ।
जघान पाण्डवरथानादिश्यादिश्य भारत ॥२०॥
20. śarairekāyanīkurvandiśaḥ sarvā yatavrataḥ ,
jaghāna pāṇḍavarathānādiśyādiśya bhārata.
20. śaraiḥ ekāyanīkurvan diśaḥ sarvāḥ yatavrataḥ
jaghāna pāṇḍavarathān ādiśya-ādiśya bhārata
20. bhārata śaraiḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ ekāyanīkurvan yatavrataḥ
(saḥ) ādiśya-ādiśya pāṇḍavarathān jaghāna
20. O scion of Bharata, by his arrows, he made all directions appear as one (filled completely), and being firm in his vows, he repeatedly struck down the chariots of the Pandavas, targeting them one by one.
स नृत्यन्वै रथोपस्थे दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् ।
अलातचक्रवद्राजंस्तत्र तत्र स्म दृश्यते ॥२१॥
21. sa nṛtyanvai rathopasthe darśayanpāṇilāghavam ,
alātacakravadrājaṁstatra tatra sma dṛśyate.
21. saḥ nṛtyan vai rathopasthe darśayan pāṇilāghavam
alātacakravat rājan tatra tatra sma dṛśyate
21. rājan,
saḥ rathopasthe nṛtyan vai pāṇilāghavam darśayan tatra tatra alātacakravat dṛśyate sma
21. O King, dancing on the platform of his chariot and displaying the dexterity of his hands, he was seen here and there, appearing like a spinning firebrand.
तमेकं समरे शूरं पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयास्तथा ।
अनेकशतसाहस्रं समपश्यन्त लाघवात् ॥२२॥
22. tamekaṁ samare śūraṁ pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāstathā ,
anekaśatasāhasraṁ samapaśyanta lāghavāt.
22. tam ekam samare śūram pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāḥ tathā
anekasatasaahasram samapasyanta lāghavāt
22. pāṇḍavāḥ tathā sṛñjayāḥ samare tam ekam śūram
lāghavāt anekasatasaahasram samapasyanta
22. Due to his agility, the Pāṇḍavas and Sañjayas perceived that single hero in battle as if he were countless hundreds of thousands.
मायाकृतात्मानमिव भीष्मं तत्र स्म मेनिरे ।
पूर्वस्यां दिशि तं दृष्ट्वा प्रतीच्यां ददृशुर्जनाः ॥२३॥
23. māyākṛtātmānamiva bhīṣmaṁ tatra sma menire ,
pūrvasyāṁ diśi taṁ dṛṣṭvā pratīcyāṁ dadṛśurjanāḥ.
23. māyākṛtātmānam iva bhīṣmam tatra sma menire
pūrvasyām diśi tam dṛṣṭvā pratīcyām dadṛśuḥ janāḥ
23. tatra bhīṣmam māyākṛtātmānam iva menire sma
janāḥ tam pūrvasyām diśi dṛṣṭvā pratīcyām dadṛśuḥ
23. There, they considered Bhīṣma as if he had created himself through illusion (māyā). People, having seen him in the eastern direction, would then immediately see him in the western.
उदीच्यां चैनमालोक्य दक्षिणस्यां पुनः प्रभो ।
एवं स समरे वीरो गाङ्गेयः प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥२४॥
24. udīcyāṁ cainamālokya dakṣiṇasyāṁ punaḥ prabho ,
evaṁ sa samare vīro gāṅgeyaḥ pratyadṛśyata.
24. udīcyām ca enam ālokya dakṣiṇasyām punaḥ prabho
evam saḥ samare vīraḥ gāṅgeyaḥ prati adṛśyata
24. ca प्रभो,
enam udīcyām ālokya punaḥ dakṣiṇasyām (dadṛśuḥ) evam saḥ vīraḥ gāṅgeyaḥ samare pratyadṛśyata
24. And, O Lord, having seen him in the northern direction, they would again see him in the southern. In this manner, that hero, the son of Gaṅgā, was perceived in battle.
न चैनं पाण्डवेयानां कश्चिच्छक्नोति वीक्षितुम् ।
विशिखानेव पश्यन्ति भीष्मचापच्युतान्बहून् ॥२५॥
25. na cainaṁ pāṇḍaveyānāṁ kaścicchaknoti vīkṣitum ,
viśikhāneva paśyanti bhīṣmacāpacyutānbahūn.
25. na ca enam pāṇḍaveyānām kaścit śaknoti vīkṣitum
viśikhān eva paśyanti bhīṣmacāpacyutān bahūn
25. kaścit pāṇḍaveyānām enam vīkṣitum na ca śaknoti
bhīṣmacāpacyutān bahūn viśikhān eva paśyanti
25. Not one of the Pandavas is able to look directly at him; they only see the numerous arrows released from Bhishma's bow.
कुर्वाणं समरे कर्म सूदयानं च वाहिनीम् ।
व्याक्रोशन्त रणे तत्र वीरा बहुविधं बहु ।
अमानुषेण रूपेण चरन्तं पितरं तव ॥२६॥
26. kurvāṇaṁ samare karma sūdayānaṁ ca vāhinīm ,
vyākrośanta raṇe tatra vīrā bahuvidhaṁ bahu ,
amānuṣeṇa rūpeṇa carantaṁ pitaraṁ tava.
26. kurvāṇam samare karma sūdayānam
ca vāhinīm vyākrośanta raṇe
tatra vīrā bahuvidham bahu amānuṣeṇa
rūpeṇa carantam pitaram tava
26. tatra raṇe vīrāḥ tava pitaram
amānuṣeṇa rūpeṇa carantam samare
karma kurvāṇam ca vāhinīm
sūdayānam bahuvidham bahu vyākrośanta
26. There, in the battle, the heroes cried out repeatedly and in many ways, as your father (Bhishma) moved about in a superhuman form, performing heroic actions (karma) in combat and slaughtering the army.
शलभा इव राजानः पतन्ति विधिचोदिताः ।
भीष्माग्निमभि संक्रुद्धं विनाशाय सहस्रशः ॥२७॥
27. śalabhā iva rājānaḥ patanti vidhicoditāḥ ,
bhīṣmāgnimabhi saṁkruddhaṁ vināśāya sahasraśaḥ.
27. śalabhāḥ iva rājānaḥ patanti vidhicoditāḥ
bhīṣmāgnim abhi saṃkruddham vināśāya sahasraśaḥ
27. vidhicoditāḥ rājānaḥ sahasraśaḥ saṃkruddham
bhīṣmāgnim abhi vināśāya śalabhāḥ iva patanti
27. Impelled by destiny (vidhi), thousands of kings fall like moths towards the greatly enraged fire that is Bhishma, for their own destruction.
न हि मोघः शरः कश्चिदासीद्भीष्मस्य संयुगे ।
नरनागाश्वकायेषु बहुत्वाल्लघुवेधिनः ॥२८॥
28. na hi moghaḥ śaraḥ kaścidāsīdbhīṣmasya saṁyuge ,
naranāgāśvakāyeṣu bahutvāllaghuvedhinaḥ.
28. na hi moghaḥ śaraḥ kaścit āsīt bhīṣmasya
saṃyuge naranāgāśvakāyeṣu bahutvāt laghuvedhinaḥ
28. saṃyuge bhīṣmasya kaścit śaraḥ moghaḥ na hi
āsīt naranāgāśvakāyeṣu bahutvāt laghuvedhinaḥ
28. Indeed, no arrow of Bhishma was wasted in battle; for, as a swift piercer, he (Bhishma) struck the multitude of bodies of men, elephants, and horses.
भिनत्त्येकेन बाणेन सुमुक्तेन पतत्रिणा ।
गजकङ्कटसंनाहं वज्रेणेवाचलोत्तमम् ॥२९॥
29. bhinattyekena bāṇena sumuktena patatriṇā ,

29. With a single, well-shot, feathered arrow, he pierces the armor of an elephant, just as a thunderbolt (vajra) might split a mighty mountain.

नाराचेन सुतीक्ष्णेन निजघान पिता तव ॥३०॥

30. Your father struck down two, or even three, armored elephant-riders who were clustered together, with a very sharp iron arrow.
यो यो भीष्मं नरव्याघ्रमभ्येति युधि कश्चन ।
मुहूर्तदृष्टः स मया पातितो भुवि दृश्यते ॥३१॥
31. yo yo bhīṣmaṁ naravyāghramabhyeti yudhi kaścana ,
muhūrtadṛṣṭaḥ sa mayā pātito bhuvi dṛśyate.

31. Whoever, any warrior (naravyāghra) who approaches Bhishma in battle, that very person, once seen by me for even a moment, is then observed fallen upon the earth.
एवं सा धर्मराजस्य वध्यमाना महाचमूः ।
भीष्मेणातुलवीर्येण व्यशीर्यत सहस्रधा ॥३२॥
32. evaṁ sā dharmarājasya vadhyamānā mahācamūḥ ,
bhīṣmeṇātulavīryeṇa vyaśīryata sahasradhā.

32. In this manner, that great army belonging to the king of righteousness (dharmarāja Yudhishthira), being slaughtered by Bhishma of incomparable might, was shattered into a thousand pieces.
प्रकीर्यत महासेना शरवर्षाभितापिता ।
पश्यतो वासुदेवस्य पार्थस्य च महात्मनः ॥३३॥

33. The great army, tormented by the barrage of arrows, was dispersed even as Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) and the noble Pārtha (Arjuna) looked on.
यतमानापि ते वीरा द्रवमाणान्महारथान् ।
नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं भीष्मबाणप्रपीडिताः ॥३४॥
34. yatamānāpi te vīrā dravamāṇānmahārathān ,
nāśaknuvanvārayituṁ bhīṣmabāṇaprapīḍitāḥ.

34. Even though those warriors struggled, they were unable to stop the great charioteers who were fleeing, as they themselves were severely afflicted by Bhīṣma's arrows.
महेन्द्रसमवीर्येण वध्यमाना महाचमूः ।
अभज्यत महाराज न च द्वौ सह धावतः ॥३५॥
35. mahendrasamavīryeṇa vadhyamānā mahācamūḥ ,
abhajyata mahārāja na ca dvau saha dhāvataḥ.

35. O great king, the vast army, being decimated by a warrior whose might was comparable to Mahendra's (Indra), was shattered. No two soldiers even ran together.
आविद्धनरनागाश्वं पतितध्वजकूबरम् ।
अनीकं पाण्डुपुत्राणां हाहाभूतमचेतनम् ॥३६॥
36. āviddhanaranāgāśvaṁ patitadhvajakūbaram ,
anīkaṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ hāhābhūtamacetanam.

36. The army of the Pāṇḍavas (Pāṇḍuputras), with its men, elephants, and horses struck down, its standards and chariot poles shattered, was filled with lamentation and rendered senseless.
जघानात्र पिता पुत्रं पुत्रश्च पितरं तथा ।
प्रियं सखायं चाक्रन्दे सखा दैवबलात्कृतः ॥३७॥
37. jaghānātra pitā putraṁ putraśca pitaraṁ tathā ,
priyaṁ sakhāyaṁ cākrande sakhā daivabalātkṛtaḥ.

37. In this battle, a father killed his son, and a son similarly killed his father. A friend, overpowered by the force of destiny (daiva), lamented for his dear friend.
विमुच्य कवचानन्ये पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकाः ।
प्रकीर्य केशान्धावन्तः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त भारत ॥३८॥
38. vimucya kavacānanye pāṇḍuputrasya sainikāḥ ,
prakīrya keśāndhāvantaḥ pratyadṛśyanta bhārata.

38. O Bhārata, other soldiers of the son of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍuputra), having shed their armors and with their hair disheveled, were seen fleeing.
तद्गोकुलमिवोद्भ्रान्तमुद्भ्रान्तरथयूथपम् ।
ददृशे पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्यमार्तस्वरं तदा ॥३९॥
39. tadgokulamivodbhrāntamudbhrāntarathayūthapam ,
dadṛśe pāṇḍuputrasya sainyamārtasvaraṁ tadā.

39. Then, the army of Pandu's son (Pāṇḍuputra) was seen, bewildered like a herd of cattle, with its chariot-commanders disoriented, and crying out in distress.
प्रभज्यमानं तत्सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा देवकिनन्दनः ।
उवाच पार्थं बीभत्सुं निगृह्य रथमुत्तमम् ॥४०॥
40. prabhajyamānaṁ tatsainyaṁ dṛṣṭvā devakinandanaḥ ,
uvāca pārthaṁ bībhatsuṁ nigṛhya rathamuttamam.

40. Having witnessed that army being routed, Krishna (Devakīnandana), halting the excellent chariot, addressed Arjuna (Pārtha), who was known as Bibhatsu.
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तः पार्थ यः काङ्क्षितस्त्वया ।
प्रहरास्मै नरव्याघ्र न चेन्मोहाद्विमुह्यसे ॥४१॥
41. ayaṁ sa kālaḥ saṁprāptaḥ pārtha yaḥ kāṅkṣitastvayā ,
praharāsmai naravyāghra na cenmohādvimuhyase.

41. O Partha, this is that moment which you desired, and it has arrived. O tiger among men, strike him, unless you are bewildered by delusion (moha).
यत्त्वया कथितं वीर पुरा राज्ञां समागमे ।
भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैनिकान् ॥४२॥
42. yattvayā kathitaṁ vīra purā rājñāṁ samāgame ,
bhīṣmadroṇamukhānsarvāndhārtarāṣṭrasya sainikān.

42. O hero, what you declared formerly in the assembly of kings: 'All the soldiers of Dhritarashtra, with Bhishma and Drona as their chiefs...'
सानुबन्धान्हनिष्यामि ये मां योत्स्यन्ति संयुगे ।
इति तत्कुरु कौन्तेय सत्यं वाक्यमरिंदम ॥४३॥
43. sānubandhānhaniṣyāmi ye māṁ yotsyanti saṁyuge ,
iti tatkuru kaunteya satyaṁ vākyamariṁdama.
43. sānuvandhān haniṣyāmi ye mām yotsyanti saṃyuge
iti tat kuru kaunteya satyam vākyam ariṃdama
43. (aham) ye mām saṃyuge yotsyanti,

43. 'I will kill them, along with their kinsmen, all those who fight me in battle.' Therefore, O Kaunteya, O subduer of enemies, make that declaration true.
बीभत्सो पश्य सैन्यं स्वं भज्यमानं समन्ततः ।
द्रवतश्च महीपालान्सर्वान्यौधिष्ठिरे बले ॥४४॥
44. bībhatso paśya sainyaṁ svaṁ bhajyamānaṁ samantataḥ ,
dravataśca mahīpālānsarvānyaudhiṣṭhire bale.

44. O Bibhatsu, behold the army you face being shattered on all sides, and all the kings fleeing before Yudhishthira's mighty force.
दृष्ट्वा हि समरे भीष्मं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् ।
भयार्ताः संप्रणश्यन्ति सिंहं क्षुद्रमृगा इव ॥४५॥
45. dṛṣṭvā hi samare bhīṣmaṁ vyāttānanamivāntakam ,
bhayārtāḥ saṁpraṇaśyanti siṁhaṁ kṣudramṛgā iva.
45. dṛṣṭvā hi samare bhīṣmam vyāttānanam iva antakam
bhayārtāḥ sampraṇaśyanti siṃham kṣudramṛgāḥ iva

45. Indeed, upon seeing Bhishma in battle, appearing like Death (Antaka) with his gaping mouth, those afflicted by fear utterly perish, just as small deer flee from a lion.
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच वासुदेवं धनंजयः ।
चोदयाश्वान्यतो भीष्मो विगाह्यैतद्बलार्णवम् ॥४६॥
46. evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca vāsudevaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
codayāśvānyato bhīṣmo vigāhyaitadbalārṇavam.

46. Thus addressed, Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) replied to Vāsudeva (Krishna): "Drive the horses to where Bhishma is, having plunged into this ocean of an army!"
ततोऽश्वान्रजतप्रख्यांश्चोदयामास माधवः ।
यतो भीष्मरथो राजन्दुष्प्रेक्ष्यो रश्मिमानिव ॥४७॥
47. tato'śvānrajataprakhyāṁścodayāmāsa mādhavaḥ ,
yato bhīṣmaratho rājanduṣprekṣyo raśmimāniva.

47. Then Mādhava (Krishna) drove the silver-hued horses to where Bhishma's chariot was, O King, which was as difficult to behold as the sun itself, radiant with its rays.
ततस्तत्पुनरावृत्तं युधिष्ठिरबलं महत् ।
दृष्ट्वा पार्थं महाबाहुं भीष्मायोद्यन्तमाहवे ॥४८॥
48. tatastatpunarāvṛttaṁ yudhiṣṭhirabalaṁ mahat ,
dṛṣṭvā pārthaṁ mahābāhuṁ bhīṣmāyodyantamāhave.
48. tataḥ tat punar āvṛttam yudhiṣṭhirabalam mahat
dṛṣṭvā pārtham mahābāhum bhīṣmāya udyantam āhave

48. Then that great army of Yudhishthira turned back, having seen the mighty-armed Pārtha (Arjuna) preparing to advance against Bhishma in battle.
ततो भीष्मः कुरुश्रेष्ठः सिंहवद्विनदन्मुहुः ।
धनंजयरथं तूर्णं शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥४९॥
49. tato bhīṣmaḥ kuruśreṣṭhaḥ siṁhavadvinadanmuhuḥ ,
dhanaṁjayarathaṁ tūrṇaṁ śaravarṣairavākirat.

49. Then Bhishma, the foremost among the Kurus, roaring repeatedly like a lion, swiftly assailed Arjuna's chariot with volleys of arrows.
क्षणेन स रथस्तस्य सहयः सहसारथिः ।
शरवर्षेण महता संछन्नो न प्रकाशते ॥५०॥
50. kṣaṇena sa rathastasya sahayaḥ sahasārathiḥ ,
śaravarṣeṇa mahatā saṁchanno na prakāśate.

50. In a moment, his chariot, along with its horses and charioteer, became completely obscured by a massive volley of arrows and was no longer visible.
वासुदेवस्त्वसंभ्रान्तो धैर्यमास्थाय सत्त्ववान् ।
चोदयामास तानश्वान्वितुन्नान्भीष्मसायकैः ॥५१॥
51. vāsudevastvasaṁbhrānto dhairyamāsthāya sattvavān ,
codayāmāsa tānaśvānvitunnānbhīṣmasāyakaiḥ.
51. vāsudevaḥ tu asaṃbhrāntaḥ dhairyam āsthāya sattvavān
codayāmāsa tān aśvān vitunnān bhīṣmasāyakaiḥ

51. But Vasudeva (Krishna), remaining undisturbed and endowed with great courage, calmly urged those horses onward, even though they were pierced by Bhishma's arrows.
ततः पार्थो धनुर्गृह्य दिव्यं जलदनिस्वनम् ।
पातयामास भीष्मस्य धनुश्छित्त्वा त्रिभिः शरैः ॥५२॥
52. tataḥ pārtho dhanurgṛhya divyaṁ jaladanisvanam ,
pātayāmāsa bhīṣmasya dhanuśchittvā tribhiḥ śaraiḥ.

52. Then Partha (Arjuna), taking up his divine bow, which resounded like thunder, cut Bhishma's bow with three arrows and made it fall.
स च्छिन्नधन्वा कौरव्यः पुनरन्यन्महद्धनुः ।
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण सज्यं चक्रे पिता तव ॥५३॥
53. sa cchinnadhanvā kauravyaḥ punaranyanmahaddhanuḥ ,
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa sajyaṁ cakre pitā tava.

53. And he, that Kaurava (Droṇa), whose bow had been broken, strung another great bow in the mere blink of an eye. This was your father (Droṇa).
विचकर्ष ततो दोर्भ्यां धनुर्जलदनिस्वनम् ।
अथास्य तदपि क्रुद्धश्चिच्छेद धनुरर्जुनः ॥५४॥
54. vicakarṣa tato dorbhyāṁ dhanurjaladanisvanam ,
athāsya tadapi kruddhaściccheda dhanurarjunaḥ.

atha asya tat api kruddhaḥ ciccheda dhanuḥ arjunaḥ

54. Then he (Droṇa) drew with both arms the bow that roared like a thundercloud. And then, enraged, Arjuna cut even that bow of his.
तस्य तत्पूजयामास लाघवं शंतनोः सुतः ।
साधु पार्थ महाबाहो साधु भो पाण्डुनन्दन ॥५५॥
55. tasya tatpūjayāmāsa lāghavaṁ śaṁtanoḥ sutaḥ ,
sādhu pārtha mahābāho sādhu bho pāṇḍunandana.

55. The son of Śaṃtanu (Bhīṣma) praised his (Arjuna's) remarkable agility, exclaiming, 'Well done, O Pārtha! O mighty-armed one! Excellent, O son of Pāṇḍu!'
त्वय्येवैतद्युक्तरूपं महत्कर्म धनंजय ।
प्रीतोऽस्मि सुदृढं पुत्र कुरु युद्धं मया सह ॥५६॥
56. tvayyevaitadyuktarūpaṁ mahatkarma dhanaṁjaya ,
prīto'smi sudṛḍhaṁ putra kuru yuddhaṁ mayā saha.
56. tvayi eva etat yuktarūpam mahat karma dhanañjaya
prītaḥ asmi sudṛḍham putra kuru yuddham mayā saha

56. This great feat is indeed most befitting for you, O Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). I am exceedingly pleased, O son. Engage in battle with me!
इति पार्थं प्रशस्याथ प्रगृह्यान्यन्महद्धनुः ।
मुमोच समरे वीरः शरान्पार्थरथं प्रति ॥५७॥
57. iti pārthaṁ praśasyātha pragṛhyānyanmahaddhanuḥ ,
mumoca samare vīraḥ śarānpārtharathaṁ prati.

57. Having thus praised Arjuna, the hero then took up another great bow and released arrows towards Arjuna's chariot in battle.
अदर्शयद्वासुदेवो हययाने परं बलम् ।
मोघान्कुर्वञ्शरांस्तस्य मण्डलान्यचरल्लघु ॥५८॥

58. Vāsudeva (Krishna) displayed supreme skill in handling the horses. Making his arrows ineffective, he swiftly moved the chariot in circles.
तथापि भीष्मः सुदृढं वासुदेवधनंजयौ ।

59. Nevertheless, O respected one (māriṣa), Bhishma firmly pierced both Vāsudeva (Krishna) and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) in all their limbs with sharp arrows.
शुशुभाते नरव्याघ्रौ तौ भीष्मशरविक्षतौ ।
गोवृषाविव नर्दन्तौ विषाणोल्लिखिताङ्कितौ ॥६०॥

60. Those two tiger-like men, wounded by Bhishma's arrows, shone like two roaring bulls, marked with gashes from horns.

कृष्णयोर्युधि संरब्धो भीष्मो व्यावारयद्दिशः ॥६१॥

61. Bhishma, greatly enraged and furious in battle against Krishna and Arjuna, again covered all directions with his arrows, which had bent shafts.
वार्ष्णेयं च शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कम्पयामास रोषितः ।
मुहुरभ्युत्स्मयन्भीष्मः प्रहस्य स्वनवत्तदा ॥६२॥
62. vārṣṇeyaṁ ca śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ kampayāmāsa roṣitaḥ ,

62. And then, enraged, Bhishma, repeatedly smiling broadly and having laughed loudly and sonorously, made Krishna (vārṣṇeya) tremble with sharp arrows.
ततः कृष्णस्तु समरे दृष्ट्वा भीष्मपराक्रमम् ।
संप्रेक्ष्य च महाबाहुः पार्थस्य मृदुयुद्धताम् ॥६३॥

63. Then, the mighty-armed Krishna (mahābāhu), observing Bhishma's valor (parākrama) in battle and also noticing Partha's gentle manner of fighting...

प्रतपन्तमिवादित्यं मध्यमासाद्य सेनयोः ॥६४॥
64. bhīṣmaṁ ca śaravarṣāṇi sṛjantamaniśaṁ yudhi ,

64. ...and (observing) Bhishma, who, having taken his position in the center of the two armies, was incessantly unleashing showers of arrows in battle, blazing like the sun.
वरान्वरान्विनिघ्नन्तं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकान् ।
युगान्तमिव कुर्वाणं भीष्मं यौधिष्ठिरे बले ॥६५॥

65. Bhīṣma, in Yudhiṣṭhira's army, was slaying the best of the Pāṇḍava's soldiers, as if bringing about a cosmic dissolution (yugānta).
अमृष्यमाणो भगवान्केशवः परवीरहा ।
अचिन्तयदमेयात्मा नास्ति यौधिष्ठिरं बलम् ॥६६॥
66. amṛṣyamāṇo bhagavānkeśavaḥ paravīrahā ,

66. The immeasurable Lord Keśava (Krishna), the slayer of mighty enemies, unable to tolerate (amṛṣyamāṇa) the sight, thought, "Yudhiṣṭhira's army will not survive."
एकाह्ना हि रणे भीष्मो नाशयेद्देवदानवान् ।
किमु पाण्डुसुतान्युद्धे सबलान्सपदानुगान् ॥६७॥

67. Indeed, Bhīṣma could destroy even the gods and demons in a single day (ekāhna) of battle; how much more so then the Pāṇḍava's sons in this war, along with their forces and their followers?
द्रवते च महत्सैन्यं पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः ।
एते च कौरवास्तूर्णं प्रभग्नान्दृश्य सोमकान् ।
आद्रवन्ति रणे हृष्टा हर्षयन्तः पितामहम् ॥६८॥

68. And the great army of the magnanimous Pāṇḍava is fleeing. Moreover, these Kauravas, seeing the Somakas completely routed, rush joyfully into battle, thus gladdening their grandfather (Bhīṣma).
सोऽहं भीष्मं निहन्म्यद्य पाण्डवार्थाय दंशितः ।
भारमेतं विनेष्यामि पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥६९॥
69. so'haṁ bhīṣmaṁ nihanmyadya pāṇḍavārthāya daṁśitaḥ ,
bhārametaṁ vineṣyāmi pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām.

69. Therefore, I, having donned my armor, will today slay Bhīṣma for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas. I will relieve the great-souled Pāṇḍavas of this burden.
अर्जुनोऽपि शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्वध्यमानो हि संयुगे ।
कर्तव्यं नाभिजानाति रणे भीष्मस्य गौरवात् ॥७०॥
70. arjuno'pi śaraistīkṣṇairvadhyamāno hi saṁyuge ,
kartavyaṁ nābhijānāti raṇe bhīṣmasya gauravāt.

70. Even Arjuna, though being wounded by sharp arrows in battle, indeed does not know his duty (kartavya) on the battlefield, out of reverence for Bhīṣma.
तथा चिन्तयतस्तस्य भूय एव पितामहः ।
प्रेषयामास संक्रुद्धः शरान्पार्थरथं प्रति ॥७१॥

71. While he (Arjuna) was thus deliberating, the grandfather (Bhīṣma) again, greatly enraged, dispatched arrows towards Arjuna's chariot.
तेषां बहुत्वाद्धि भृशं शराणां दिशोऽथ सर्वाः पिहिता बभूवुः ।
न चान्तरिक्षं न दिशो न भूमिर्न भास्करोऽदृश्यत रश्मिमाली ।
ववुश्च वातास्तुमुलाः सधूमा दिशश्च सर्वाः क्षुभिता बभूवुः ॥७२॥
72. teṣāṁ bahutvāddhi bhṛśaṁ śarāṇāṁ; diśo'tha sarvāḥ pihitā babhūvuḥ ,
na cāntarikṣaṁ na diśo na bhūmi;rna bhāskaro'dṛśyata raśmimālī ,
vavuśca vātāstumulāḥ sadhūmā; diśaśca sarvāḥ kṣubhitā babhūvuḥ.

72. Indeed, due to the immense multitude of those arrows, all directions became exceedingly covered. Neither the intermediate space (antarikṣa), nor the quarters, nor the earth, nor the radiant sun (bhāskara) could be seen. Furthermore, tumultuous, smoky winds blew, and all directions became agitated.

74. And also, all the Easterners, the Sauvira hosts, the Vasatis, and the Kshudrakas and Malavas, swiftly advanced towards the crowned one (Arjuna), following the command of King Shantanu's son (Bhishma).

75. The grandson of Shini (Satyaki) saw the crowned one (Arjuna) being surrounded by multitudes of many hundreds of thousands of horses, foot soldiers, and chariots, as well as by elephant chieftains.

76. Then, having seen Arjuna and Vasudeva—the most excellent among weapon-bearers—being assailed from all sides by infantry, elephants, horses, and chariots, the hero of Shini's lineage (Satyaki) swiftly advanced towards them.

चकार साहाय्यमथार्जुनस्य विष्णुर्यथा वृत्रनिषूदनस्य ॥७७॥

77. The great bowman, the chief of the Śinis (Sātyaki), swiftly attacked those armies and then provided assistance to Arjuna, just as Viṣṇu helped the slayer of Vṛtra (Indra).
विशीर्णनागाश्वरथध्वजौघं भीष्मेण वित्रासितसर्वयोधम् ।
युधिष्ठिरानीकमभिद्रवन्तं प्रोवाच संदृश्य शिनिप्रवीरः ॥७८॥

78. Having seen Yudhiṣṭhira's army, whose masses of elephants, horses, chariots, and banners were shattered, and all its warriors terrorized by Bhīṣma, fleeing, the chief of the Śinis (Sātyaki) spoke.
क्व क्षत्रिया यास्यथ नैष धर्मः सतां पुरस्तात्कथितः पुराणैः ।
मा स्वां प्रतिज्ञां जहत प्रवीराः स्वं वीरधर्मं परिपालयध्वम् ॥७९॥
79. kva kṣatriyā yāsyatha naiṣa dharmaḥ; satāṁ purastātkathitaḥ purāṇaiḥ ,
mā svāṁ pratijñāṁ jahata pravīrāḥ; svaṁ vīradharmaṁ paripālayadhvam.

79. “Where will you Kṣatriyas go? This is not the (dharma) that has been declared by the ancients (purāṇas) before the noble. O heroes, do not abandon your own vow! Uphold your own warrior's (dharma).”

81. Unable to bear the sight, the great-souled one, the lord of all Daśārhas (Krishna), then, praising Śaineya (Satyaki), spoke, having seen the Kurus attacking from all directions.

adya mayā sagaṇaṃ saṃkhye nipātyamānaṃ bhīṣmaṃ droṇaṃ ca rathāt paśya.
82. O hero of the Śinis, O Sātvata, let those who are going, indeed go; and let those who are standing, also go. Today, from your chariot, behold Bhishma and Drona, along with their retinues, being felled by me in battle!
नासौ रथः सात्वत कौरवाणां क्रुद्धस्य मुच्येत रणेऽद्य कश्चित् ।
तस्मादहं गृह्य रथाङ्गमुग्रं प्राणं हरिष्यामि महाव्रतस्य ॥८३॥
83. nāsau rathaḥ sātvata kauravāṇāṁ; kruddhasya mucyeta raṇe'dya kaścit ,

83. O Sātvata, today in battle, from this enraged one (Krishna), no Kaurava can escape this chariot. Therefore, taking up the fierce chariot wheel, I shall take the life of the one with the great vow (Bhishma).
निहत्य भीष्मं सगणं तथाजौ द्रोणं च शैनेय रथप्रवीरम् ।
प्रीतिं करिष्यामि धनंजयस्य राज्ञश्च भीमस्य तथाश्विनोश्च ॥८४॥

84. O Śaineya (Satyaki), having struck down Bhishma along with his followers, and Drona, the foremost chariot-warrior, in battle, I shall bring satisfaction to Dhananjaya (Arjuna), to King Yudhishthira, to Bhima, and also to the Aśvin twins (Nakula and Sahadeva).
निहत्य सर्वान्धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रांस्तत्पक्षिणो ये च नरेन्द्रमुख्याः ।
राज्येन राजानमजातशत्रुं संपादयिष्याम्यहमद्य हृष्टः ॥८५॥
85. nihatya sarvāndhṛtarāṣṭraputrāṁ;statpakṣiṇo ye ca narendramukhyāḥ ,
rājyena rājānamajātaśatruṁ; saṁpādayiṣyāmyahamadya hṛṣṭaḥ.

85. Having slain all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and those principal kings who are their allies, I, joyful today, will make King Yudhiṣṭhira (Ajātaśatru) attain the kingdom.
ततः सुनाभं वसुदेवपुत्रः सूर्यप्रभं वज्रसमप्रभावम् ।
क्षुरान्तमुद्यम्य भुजेन चक्रं रथादवप्लुत्य विसृज्य वाहान् ॥८६॥
86. tataḥ sunābhaṁ vasudevaputraḥ; sūryaprabhaṁ vajrasamaprabhāvam ,
kṣurāntamudyamya bhujena cakraṁ; rathādavaplutya visṛjya vāhān.

86. Then, the son of Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), having taken up his discus (cakra) called Sunābha—which shines like the sun, possesses the impact of a thunderbolt, and has sharp edges—and having jumped down from the chariot and released the horses...
संकम्पयन्गां चरणैर्महात्मा वेगेन कृष्णः प्रससार भीष्मम् ।
मदान्धमाजौ समुदीर्णदर्पः सिंहो जिघांसन्निव वारणेन्द्रम् ॥८७॥
87. saṁkampayangāṁ caraṇairmahātmā; vegena kṛṣṇaḥ prasasāra bhīṣmam ,
madāndhamājau samudīrṇadarpaḥ; siṁho jighāṁsanniva vāraṇendram.

87. The great-souled Kṛṣṇa, making the earth tremble with his steps, rapidly advanced towards Bhīṣma, like a lion full of surging pride, eager to kill a lordly elephant blinded by rut in battle.
सोऽभ्यद्रवद्भीष्ममनीकमध्ये क्रुद्धो महेन्द्रावरजः प्रमाथी ।
व्यालम्बिपीतान्तपटश्चकाशे घनो यथा खेऽचिरभापिनद्धः ॥८८॥
88. so'bhyadravadbhīṣmamanīkamadhye; kruddho mahendrāvarajaḥ pramāthī ,
vyālambipītāntapaṭaścakāśe; ghano yathā khe'cirabhāpinaddhaḥ.

88. He (Kṛṣṇa), the younger brother of Mahendra (Indra), enraged and destructive, rushed towards Bhīṣma in the midst of the army. With his yellow lower garment fluttering, he shone like a cloud adorned with recent lightning in the sky.
सुदर्शनं चास्य रराज शौरेस्तच्चक्रपद्मं सुभुजोरुनालम् ।
यथादिपद्मं तरुणार्कवर्णं रराज नारायणनाभिजातम् ॥८९॥
89. sudarśanaṁ cāsya rarāja śaure;staccakrapadmaṁ subhujorunālam ,
yathādipadmaṁ taruṇārkavarṇaṁ; rarāja nārāyaṇanābhijātam.

89. And Krishna's (Śauri) discus, resembling a lotus with his mighty arm as its stalk, shone splendidly, just as the primeval lotus, born from Vishnu's (Nārāyaṇa's) navel, shines with the color of the rising sun.
तत्कृष्णकोपोदयसूर्यबुद्धं क्षुरान्ततीक्ष्णाग्रसुजातपत्रम् ।
तस्यैव देहोरुसरःप्ररूढं रराज नारायणबाहुनालम् ॥९०॥
90. tatkṛṣṇakopodayasūryabuddhaṁ; kṣurāntatīkṣṇāgrasujātapatram ,
tasyaiva dehorusaraḥprarūḍhaṁ; rarāja nārāyaṇabāhunālam.

90. That discus, perceived as the rising sun of Krishna's anger, with its well-formed blades sharp-edged like razors, shone forth. It had sprouted from his own body, which was like a great lake, with Vishnu's (Nārāyaṇa's) arm serving as its stalk.
तमात्तचक्रं प्रणदन्तमुच्चैः क्रुद्धं महेन्द्रावरजं समीक्ष्य ।
सर्वाणि भूतानि भृशं विनेदुः क्षयं कुरूणामिति चिन्तयित्वा ॥९१॥
91. tamāttacakraṁ praṇadantamuccaiḥ; kruddhaṁ mahendrāvarajaṁ samīkṣya ,
sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhṛśaṁ vineduḥ; kṣayaṁ kurūṇāmiti cintayitvā.

91. Seeing him, Krishna (Mahendrāvaraja), enraged, having taken up the discus and roaring loudly, all beings cried out intensely, contemplating, "This is the annihilation of the Kurus."
स वासुदेवः प्रगृहीतचक्रः संवर्तयिष्यन्निव जीवलोकम् ।
अभ्युत्पतँल्लोकगुरुर्बभासे भूतानि धक्ष्यन्निव कालवह्निः ॥९२॥
92. sa vāsudevaḥ pragṛhītacakraḥ; saṁvartayiṣyanniva jīvalokam ,
abhyutpataँllokagururbabhāse; bhūtāni dhakṣyanniva kālavahniḥ.

92. That Vasudeva (Krishna), having taken up his discus and leaping up, shone like the fire of time (kālavahni) intending to consume all beings, as if he meant to destroy the world of living beings.
तमापतन्तं प्रगृहीतचक्रं समीक्ष्य देवं द्विपदां वरिष्ठम् ।
असंभ्रमात्कार्मुकबाणपाणी रथे स्थितः शांतनवोऽभ्युवाच ॥९३॥
93. tamāpatantaṁ pragṛhītacakraṁ; samīkṣya devaṁ dvipadāṁ variṣṭham ,
asaṁbhramātkārmukabāṇapāṇī; rathe sthitaḥ śāṁtanavo'bhyuvāca.

93. Seeing that god, the foremost among bipeds, approaching with his discus raised, Bhishma, standing on his chariot, with a bow and arrows in his hands and without any fear, spoke.
एह्येहि देवेश जगन्निवास नमोऽस्तु ते शार्ङ्गरथाङ्गपाणे ।
प्रसह्य मां पातय लोकनाथ रथोत्तमाद्भूतशरण्य संख्ये ॥९४॥
94. ehyehi deveśa jagannivāsa; namo'stu te śārṅgarathāṅgapāṇe ,
prasahya māṁ pātaya lokanātha; rathottamādbhūtaśaraṇya saṁkhye.

94. Come, come, O Lord of gods, O abode of the universe! Salutations to you, O wielder of the Śārṅga bow and the chariot-wheel! O Lord of the worlds, O refuge of all beings in battle, forcibly cast me down from this excellent chariot!
त्वया हतस्येह ममाद्य कृष्ण श्रेयः परस्मिन्निह चैव लोके ।
संभावितोऽस्म्यन्धकवृष्णिनाथ लोकैस्त्रिभिर्वीर तवाभियानात् ॥९५॥
95. tvayā hatasyeha mamādya kṛṣṇa; śreyaḥ parasminniha caiva loke ,
saṁbhāvito'smyandhakavṛṣṇinātha; lokaistribhirvīra tavābhiyānāt.

saṃbhāvitaḥ asmi andhakavṛṣṇinātha

tribhiḥ lokaiḥ asmi saṃbhāvitaḥ
95. O Krishna, for me, who will be slain by you here today, there will be welfare (śreyas) both in this world and in the next. O Lord of the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis, O hero, by your very approach, I have been honored by the three worlds.
रथादवप्लुत्य ततस्त्वरावान्पार्थोऽप्यनुद्रुत्य यदुप्रवीरम् ।
जग्राह पीनोत्तमलम्बबाहुं बाह्वोर्हरिं व्यायतपीनबाहुः ॥९६॥
96. rathādavaplutya tatastvarāvā;npārtho'pyanudrutya yadupravīram ,
jagrāha pīnottamalambabāhuṁ; bāhvorhariṁ vyāyatapīnabāhuḥ.

96. Then, the swift Pārtha (Arjuna), having leaped down from his chariot and quickly pursued the foremost hero of the Yadus (Krishna), seized Hari (Krishna) by his stout, prominent, and pendulous arms, (Arjuna himself being) one with widely extended and strong arms.
निगृह्यमाणश्च तदादिदेवो भृशं सरोषः किल नाम योगी ।
आदाय वेगेन जगाम विष्णुर्जिष्णुं महावात इवैकवृक्षम् ॥९७॥
97. nigṛhyamāṇaśca tadādidevo; bhṛśaṁ saroṣaḥ kila nāma yogī ,
ādāya vegena jagāma viṣṇu;rjiṣṇuṁ mahāvāta ivaikavṛkṣam.

97. Then, the primeval deity (ādideva) Vishnu (viṣṇu), indeed the mystic (yogī), being restrained and greatly enraged, swiftly seized Jishnu (Arjuna), just as a great wind seizes a single tree.
पार्थस्तु विष्टभ्य बलेन पादौ भीष्मान्तिकं तूर्णमभिद्रवन्तम् ।
बलान्निजग्राह किरीटमाली पदेऽथ राजन्दशमे कथंचित् ॥९८॥
98. pārthastu viṣṭabhya balena pādau; bhīṣmāntikaṁ tūrṇamabhidravantam ,
balānnijagrāha kirīṭamālī; pade'tha rājandaśame kathaṁcit.

98. But Partha (pārtha), the crowned one (kirīṭamālī), having firmly braced his feet with strength, then, O king, somehow forcefully restrained him (Krishna) who was swiftly rushing towards Bhishma (bhīṣma), at the tenth step.
अवस्थितं च प्रणिपत्य कृष्णं प्रीतोऽर्जुनः काञ्चनचित्रमाली ।
उवाच कोपं प्रतिसंहरेति गतिर्भवान्केशव पाण्डवानाम् ॥९९॥
99. avasthitaṁ ca praṇipatya kṛṣṇaṁ; prīto'rjunaḥ kāñcanacitramālī ,
uvāca kopaṁ pratisaṁhareti; gatirbhavānkeśava pāṇḍavānām.

99. And having prostrated before Krishna (kṛṣṇa) who had stopped, the pleased Arjuna, adorned with a variegated golden garland, said: "Withdraw (your) anger! O Keshava (keśava), you are the refuge of the Pandavas."
न हास्यते कर्म यथाप्रतिज्ञं पुत्रैः शपे केशव सोदरैश्च ।
अन्तं करिष्यामि यथा कुरूणां त्वयाहमिन्द्रानुज संप्रयुक्तः ॥१००॥
100. na hāsyate karma yathāpratijñaṁ; putraiḥ śape keśava sodaraiśca ,
antaṁ kariṣyāmi yathā kurūṇāṁ; tvayāhamindrānuja saṁprayuktaḥ.

100. The action (karma) promised will not be given up, O Keshava (keśava)! I swear by my sons and brothers. I, accompanied by you, O younger brother of Indra (indrānūja), will certainly bring an end to the Kurus.
ततः प्रतिज्ञां समयं च तस्मै जनार्दनः प्रीतमना निशम्य ।
स्थितः प्रिये कौरवसत्तमस्य रथं सचक्रः पुनरारुरोह ॥१०१॥
101. tataḥ pratijñāṁ samayaṁ ca tasmai; janārdanaḥ prītamanā niśamya ,
sthitaḥ priye kauravasattamasya; rathaṁ sacakraḥ punarāruroha.

101. Then, Krishna (Janārdana), with a pleased mind, having heard the vow and the agreement (made) for him (Arjuna), stood steadfast. He, accompanied by his discus, again ascended the chariot of the best of the Kurus (Arjuna).
स तानभीषून्पुनराददानः प्रगृह्य शङ्खं द्विषतां निहन्ता ।
विनादयामास ततो दिशश्च स पाञ्चजन्यस्य रवेण शौरिः ॥१०२॥
102. sa tānabhīṣūnpunarādadānaḥ; pragṛhya śaṅkhaṁ dviṣatāṁ nihantā ,
vinādayāmāsa tato diśaśca; sa pāñcajanyasya raveṇa śauriḥ.

102. He, Krishna (Śauri), the slayer of enemies, again grasping those reins and taking hold of the conch, then caused the directions to resound with the roar of his conch (Pāñcajanya).
व्याविद्धनिष्काङ्गदकुण्डलं तं रजोविकीर्णाञ्चितपक्ष्मनेत्रम् ।
विशुद्धदंष्ट्रं प्रगृहीतशङ्खं विचुक्रुशुः प्रेक्ष्य कुरुप्रवीराः ॥१०३॥
103. vyāviddhaniṣkāṅgadakuṇḍalaṁ taṁ; rajovikīrṇāñcitapakṣmanetram ,
viśuddhadaṁṣṭraṁ pragṛhītaśaṅkhaṁ; vicukruśuḥ prekṣya kurupravīrāḥ.

103. Beholding him, whose necklaces, armlets, and earrings were dishevelled, whose beautiful eyelashes and eyes were scattered with dust, whose teeth were gleaming pure, and who held a conch, the Kuru heroes cried out.
मृदङ्गभेरीपटहप्रणादा नेमिस्वना दुन्दुभिनिस्वनाश्च ।
ससिंहनादाश्च बभूवुरुग्राः सर्वेष्वनीकेषु ततः कुरूणाम् ॥१०४॥
104. mṛdaṅgabherīpaṭahapraṇādā; nemisvanā dundubhinisvanāśca ,
sasiṁhanādāśca babhūvurugrāḥ; sarveṣvanīkeṣu tataḥ kurūṇām.

104. Then, throughout all the Kuru armies, the roars of mṛdaṅga, bherī, and paṭaha drums, the sounds of chariot wheel-rims, and the sounds of war-drums, accompanied by lion-like roars, became formidable.
गाण्डीवघोषः स्तनयित्नुकल्पो जगाम पार्थस्य नभो दिशश्च ।

105. The roar of Arjuna's (Pārtha) Gāṇḍīva bow, resembling a thunderclap, filled the sky and all directions. And pure, bright arrows, shot from the Pāṇḍava's bow, flew into all directions.
तं कौरवाणामधिपो बलेन भीष्मेण भूरिश्रवसा च सार्धम् ।
अभ्युद्ययावुद्यतबाणपाणिः कक्षं दिधक्षन्निव धूमकेतुः ॥१०६॥

106. The chief of the Kauravas, Duryodhana, along with Bala, Bhishma, and Bhurishravas, advanced towards him (Arjuna). With an arrow raised in his hand, he was like a comet eager to consume a forest.
अथार्जुनाय प्रजहार भल्लान्भूरिश्रवाः सप्त सुवर्णपुङ्खान् ।
दुर्योधनस्तोमरमुग्रवेगं शल्यो गदां शांतनवश्च शक्तिम् ॥१०७॥

107. Then Bhurishravas struck Arjuna with seven golden-shafted *bhalla* arrows. Duryodhana hurled a spear of fierce velocity, Shalya threw a mace, and Bhishma (Śāntanava) launched a missile (śakti).

108. He (Arjuna) countered the seven excellent arrows released by Bhurishravas with seven of his own arrows. Then, with a sharp razor-edged arrow (*kṣura*), he shattered that spear which had been launched by Duryodhana.

109. Then, with two arrows, the hero (Arjuna) severed the excellent, lightning-gleaming missile (śakti) that was hurled by Bhishma (Śāntanava), and also the mace that was discharged from the arm of the King of Madras.

110. Then, mightily drawing his wondrous, incomparable bow, Gāṇḍīva, with both arms, he (Arjuna) duly manifested the extremely terrible and astonishing Mahendra missile (astra) in the sky.

111. Then, that great-souled one (Arjuna), the great archer adorned with a diadem (kirīṭamālī), repelled all the armies with that excellent missile (astra) and with volleys of arrows shining with the pure color of fire.

112. The arrows (śilīmukhāḥ) released from Arjuna's (Pārtha's) bow, after severing the chariots, banner-tops, bows, and arms of the enemies, entered the bodies of their kings, great elephants, and horses.

113. Then, Arjuna (Pārtha), the one adorned with a diadem, having spread his keen, well-sharpened arrows across all main and intermediate directions, caused distress in the minds of his enemies with the sound of his Gandiva bow.
तस्मिंस्तथा घोरतमे प्रवृत्ते शङ्खस्वना दुन्दुभिनिस्वनाश्च ।
अन्तर्हिता गाण्डिवनिस्वनेन बभूवुरुग्राश्च रणप्रणादाः ॥११४॥

114. When that exceedingly dreadful situation had thus commenced, the sounds of conch shells, the sounds of drums, and the fierce battle cries were all suppressed by the sound of the Gandiva bow.

115. Then, upon recognizing that sound of the Gandiva bow, the heroic warriors (nṛvīrāḥ) led by King Virata, along with the brave King Drupada of Panchala, all of undiminished spirit, came to that spot.

116. Indeed, from wherever the roar of the Gandiva (bow) emanated, all your armies retreated towards that very direction; no one hostile dared to approach it.

117. In that extremely dreadful battle of kings, great heroes, along with their chariots and charioteers, were slain. Also, elephants, tormented by the impact of iron arrows, adorned with great banners and beautiful golden girths, were struck down.

118. Deprived of life, their bodies pierced and armor broken, they suddenly fell down. They were severely struck by Pārtha (Arjuna) (kirīṭin) with fiercely forceful, sharpened, and sharp-pointed arrows (bhallāḥ).

119. The great banners (or chariots bearing them) at the forefronts of the armies, whose mechanisms were severed and main chariot pins destroyed, along with throngs of foot soldiers, chariots, horses, and elephants in battle, were struck down by Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).

120. O King, in that great battle, those whose armored bodies were pierced, struck by arrows, quickly lost their lives, and having propped up their limbs, they fell onto the earth by means of that excellent Aindra weapon.

121. Then, on that battlefield, Arjuna (kirīṭinā), with his sharp showers of arrows, caused a very dreadful river to flow. Its waters were the blood from wounds inflicted by weapons on human bodies, and human bodies themselves formed its foam.
वेगेन सातीव पृथुप्रवाहा प्रसुस्रुता भैरवारावरूपा ।
परेतनागाश्वशरीररोधा नरान्त्रमज्जाभृतमांसपङ्का ॥१२२॥

122. That river, flowing forth with immense force and a vast current, and possessing a terrifying roar, was obstructed by the bodies of deceased elephants and horses, and was filled with a mire of human intestines, marrow, and flesh.

123. It was haunted by countless hosts of rākṣasas and bhūtas, its meadows were tangled hair and skull-cups, it carried thousands of masses of bodies, and it was crowded with waves of scattered, various armors.

124. This river had gravel made of fragments of human, horse, and elephant bones, and it possessed a destructive abyss, truly dreadful. Her (the river was surrounded) by hosts of kaṅka-birds and vultures that were covered with rows of kaṅkas, by multitudes of flesh-eating creatures, and by hyenas...

125. All around, they saw a truly dreadful and fierce (river), with its banks overflowing, resembling the great Vaitaraṇī (river of hell). It was set in motion by the multitude of Arjuna's arrows and flowed with fat, marrow, and blood.

वित्रास्य सेनां ध्वजिनीपतीनां सिंहो मृगाणामिव यूथसंघान् ।
विनेदतुस्तावतिहर्षयुक्तौ गाण्डीवधन्वा च जनार्दनश्च ॥१२६॥
126. te cedipāñcālakarūṣamatsyāḥ; pārthāśca sarve sahitāḥ praṇeduḥ ,
vitrāsya senāṁ dhvajinīpatīnāṁ; siṁho mṛgāṇāmiva yūthasaṁghān ,
vinedatustāvatiharṣayuktau; gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca janārdanaśca.
126. te cedipāñcālakarūṣamatsyāḥ pārthāḥ ca sarve
sahitāḥ praṇeduḥ vitrāsya senām dhvajinīpatīnām
siṃhaḥ mṛgāṇām iva yūthasaṅghān vinedatuḥ tau

126. All the Chedis, Pañcālas, Karūṣas, and Matsyas, along with all the Pārthas, roared together, terrifying the armies of the flag-bearing commanders, just as a lion frightens herds of deer. Filled with great joy, both the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna) and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) also roared.
ततो रविं संहृतरश्मिजालं दृष्ट्वा भृशं शस्त्रपरिक्षताङ्गाः ।
तदैन्द्रमस्त्रं विततं सुघोरमसह्यमुद्वीक्ष्य युगान्तकल्पम् ॥१२७॥
127. tato raviṁ saṁhṛtaraśmijālaṁ; dṛṣṭvā bhṛśaṁ śastraparikṣatāṅgāḥ ,
tadaindramastraṁ vitataṁ sughora;masahyamudvīkṣya yugāntakalpam.

127. Then, those whose limbs were severely wounded by weapons, after seeing the sun with its network of rays withdrawn, and then perceiving Indra's (astra) weapon, which was extended, exceedingly terrible, unbearable, and akin to the dissolution of a cosmic age (yuga)...
अथापयानं कुरवः सभीष्माः सद्रोणदुर्योधनबाह्लिकाश्च ।
चक्रुर्निशां संधिगतां समीक्ष्य विभावसोर्लोहितराजियुक्ताम् ॥१२८॥
128. athāpayānaṁ kuravaḥ sabhīṣmāḥ; sadroṇaduryodhanabāhlikāśca ,
cakrurniśāṁ saṁdhigatāṁ samīkṣya; vibhāvasorlohitarājiyuktām.

128. Then, the Kurus, including Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Duryodhana, and Bāhlika, retreated, having observed the twilight — the juncture of night and day — marked by the sun's red streaks.
अवाप्य कीर्तिं च यशश्च लोके विजित्य शत्रूंश्च धनंजयोऽपि ।
ययौ नरेन्द्रैः सह सोदरैश्च समाप्तकर्मा शिबिरं निशायाम् ।
ततः प्रजज्ञे तुमुलः कुरूणां निशामुखे घोरतरः प्रणादः ॥१२९॥
129. avāpya kīrtiṁ ca yaśaśca loke; vijitya śatrūṁśca dhanaṁjayo'pi ,
yayau narendraiḥ saha sodaraiśca; samāptakarmā śibiraṁ niśāyām ,
tataḥ prajajñe tumulaḥ kurūṇāṁ; niśāmukhe ghorataraḥ praṇādaḥ.
129. avāpya kīrtiṃ ca yaśaḥ ca loke vijitya śatrūn ca
dhanañjayaḥ api yayau narendraiḥ saha sodaraiḥ
ca samāptakarmā śibiraṃ niśāyām tataḥ prajajñe

dhanañjayaḥ api samāptakarmā sodaraiḥ ca
narendraiḥ saha niśāyām śibiraṃ yayau tataḥ niśāmukhe
kurūṇām tumulaḥ ghorataraḥ praṇādaḥ prajajñe
129. Having attained fame and glory in the world and conquered his enemies, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) also, with his task completed, went with kings and his brothers to the camp at night. Then, at the onset of night, a tumultuous and more terrifying roar arose from the Kurus.
रणे रथानामयुतं निहत्य हता गजाः सप्तशतार्जुनेन ।
प्राच्याश्च सौवीरगणाश्च सर्वे निपातिताः क्षुद्रकमालवाश्च ।
महत्कृतं कर्म धनंजयेन कर्तुं यथा नार्हति कश्चिदन्यः ॥१३०॥
130. raṇe rathānāmayutaṁ nihatya; hatā gajāḥ saptaśatārjunena ,
prācyāśca sauvīragaṇāśca sarve; nipātitāḥ kṣudrakamālavāśca ,
mahatkṛtaṁ karma dhanaṁjayena; kartuṁ yathā nārhati kaścidanyaḥ.
130. raṇe rathānām ayutam nihatya hatāḥ gajāḥ saptasata
arjunena prācyāḥ ca sauvīragaṇāḥ ca sarve
nipātitāḥ kṣudrakamālavāḥ ca mahat kṛtam karma
dhanañjayena kartuṃ yathā na arhati kaścit anyaḥ
130. arjunena raṇe rathānām ayutam nihatya saptasata
gajāḥ hatāḥ sarve prācyāḥ ca sauvīragaṇāḥ ca
kṣudrakamālavāḥ ca nipātitāḥ dhanañjayena mahat
karma kṛtam yathā anyaḥ kaścit kartuṃ na arhati
130. Having destroyed ten thousand chariots in battle, seven hundred elephants were slain by Arjuna. All the Easterners, the Sauvira troops, and the Kshudrakas and Malavas were felled. A great deed (karma) was performed by Dhananjaya (Arjuna), such that no one else is capable of performing it.
श्रुतायुरम्बष्ठपतिश्च राजा तथैव दुर्मर्षणचित्रसेनौ ।
द्रोणः कृपः सैन्धवबाह्लिकौ च भूरिश्रवाः शल्यशलौ च राजन् ।
स्वबाहुवीर्येण जिताः सभीष्माः किरीटिना लोकमहारथेन ॥१३१॥
131. śrutāyurambaṣṭhapatiśca rājā; tathaiva durmarṣaṇacitrasenau ,
droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ saindhavabāhlikau ca; bhūriśravāḥ śalyaśalau ca rājan ,
svabāhuvīryeṇa jitāḥ sabhīṣmāḥ; kirīṭinā lokamahārathena.
131. śrutāyuḥ ambaṣṭhapatiḥ ca rājā tathā eva
durmarṣaṇacitrasenau droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ saindhava bāhlikau
ca bhūriśravāḥ śalyaśalau ca rājan svabāhuvīryeṇa
jitāḥ sabhīṣmāḥ kirīṭinā lokamahārathena
131. rājan rājā śrutāyuḥ ambaṣṭhapatiḥ ca tathā eva
durmarṣaṇacitrasenau droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ saindhava
bāhlikau ca bhūriśravāḥ śalyaśalau ca sabhīṣmāḥ
[ete] lośamahārathena kirīṭinā svabāhuvīryeṇa jitāḥ
131. O King, King Śrutāyu, the lord of Ambaṣṭha, and likewise Durmarṣaṇa and Citrasena; Droṇa, Kṛpa, and Saindhava and Bāhlika; Bhūriśravā, and Śalya and Śala— all these, along with Bhīṣma, were conquered by the strength of his own arms (bāhu-vīrya), by the crowned one (Arjuna), the great warrior (mahāratha) of the world.
इति ब्रुवन्तः शिबिराणि जग्मुः सर्वे गणा भारत ये त्वदीयाः ।
उल्कासहस्रैश्च सुसंप्रदीप्तैर्विभ्राजमानैश्च तथा प्रदीपैः ।
किरीटिवित्रासितसर्वयोधा चक्रे निवेशं ध्वजिनी कुरूणाम् ॥१३२॥
132. iti bruvantaḥ śibirāṇi jagmuḥ; sarve gaṇā bhārata ye tvadīyāḥ ,
ulkāsahasraiśca susaṁpradīptai;rvibhrājamānaiśca tathā pradīpaiḥ ,
kirīṭivitrāsitasarvayodhā; cakre niveśaṁ dhvajinī kurūṇām.
132. iti bruvantaḥ śibirāṇi jagmuḥ sarve gaṇāḥ bhārata
ye tvadīyāḥ ulkāsahasraiḥ ca susampradīptaiḥ
ca vibhrājamānaiḥ ca tathā pradīpaiḥ
kirīṭivitrāsitasarvayodhā cakre niveśam dhvajinī kurūṇām
132. bhārata iti bruvantaḥ ye sarve tvadīyāḥ gaṇāḥ
śibirāṇi jagmuḥ kurūṇām dhvajinī kirīṭivitrāsitasarvayodhā
susampradīptaiḥ ulkāsahasraiḥ ca
tathā vibhrājamānaiḥ pradīpaiḥ ca niveśam cakre
132. Saying thus, all your (Duryodhana's) troops, O Bhārata, went to their camps. And with thousands of brightly lit torches and shining lamps, the Kuru army, whose every warrior was terrified by the crowned one (Arjuna), made its encampment.
